    Effects of multiple engine placement on flutter characteristics of a backswept flying wing resembling the HORTEN IV are investigated using the code NATASHA (Nonlinear Aeroelastic Trim And Stability of HALE Aircraft). Four identical engines with defined mass, inertia, and angular momentum are placed in different locations along the span with different offsets from the elastic axis while fixing the location of the aircraft c.g. The aircraft experiences body freedom flutter along with non-oscillatory instabilities that originate from flight dynamics. Multiple engine placement increases flutter speed particularly when the engines are placed in the outboard portion of the wing (60-70% span), forward of the elastic axis, while the lift to drag ratio is affected negligibly. The behavior of the sub- and supercritical eigenvalues is studied for two cases of engine placement. NATASHA captures a hump body-freedom flutter with low frequency for the clean wing case, which disappears as the engines are placed on the wings. In neither case is there any apparent coalescence between the unstable modes. NATASHA captures other non-oscillatory unstable roots with very small amplitude, apparently originating with flight dynamics. For the clean-wing case, in the absence of aerodynamic and gravitational forces, the regions of minimum kinetic energy density for the first and third bending modes are located around 60% span. For the second mode, this kinetic energy density has local minima around the 20% and 80% span. The regions of minimum kinetic energy of these modes are in agreement with calculations that show a noticeable increase in flutter speed if engines are placed forward of the elastic axis at these regions.

  10. Vibration and aeroelastic analysis of highly flexible HALE aircraft

    The highly flexible HALE (High Altitude Long Endurance) aircraft analysis methodology is of interest because early studies indicated that HALE aircraft might have different vibration and aeroelastic characteristics from those of conventional aircraft. Recently the computer code Nonlinear Aeroelastic Trim And Stability of HALE Aircraft (NATASHA) was developed under NASA sponsorship. NATASHA can predict the flight dynamics and aeroelastic behavior for HALE aircraft with a flying wing configuration. Further analysis improvements for NATASHA were required to extend its capability to the ground vibration test (GVT) environment and to both GVT and aeroelastic behavior of HALE aircraft with other configurations. First, the analysis methodology, based on geometrically exact fully intrinsic beam theory, was extended to treat other aircraft cofigurations. Conventional aircraft with flexible fuselage and tail can now be modeled by treating the aircraft as an assembly of beam elements. NATASHA is now applicable to any aircraft cofiguration that can be modeled this way. The intrinsic beam formulation, which is a fundamental structural modeling approach, is now capable of being applying to a structure consisting of multiple beams by relating the virtual displacements and rotations at points where two or more beam elements are connected to each other. Additional aspects are also considered in the analysis such as auxiliary elevator input in the horizontal tail and fuselage aerodynamics. Second, the modeling approach was extended to treat the GVT environment for HALE aircraft, which have highly flexible wings. GVT has its main purpose to provide modal characteristics for model validation. A bungee formulation was developed by the augmented Lagrangian method and coupled to the intrinsic beam formulation for the GVT modeling. After the coupling procedure, the whole formulation cannot be fully intrinsic because the geometric constraint by bungee cords makes the system statically

  16. Observations of Orionids and eta-Aquariids in 2006 from Bulgaria

    We present observations of the eta-Aquariid and Orionid meteor showers collected during observing expeditions. The 2006 May 4-6 expedition with two observers yielded 63 meteors in 4.14 h of total effective observing time. A radiant was derived from 34 eta-Aquariids. The October campaign surprised all observers with the unusually high Orionid activity about twice as high as the average. In our analysis we include observing data of Boris Stoilov (STOBO), Natasha Ivanova (IVANA) and Ivan Gradinarov (GRAIV). Based on 107 recorded meteors from which 47 were Orionids seen in 9.8 total effective time for the night of 21/22 October, we obtained a mean ZHR equal to 41.5 assuming a population index r = 2.0.

In this interview, she speaks to childhood friend and freelance medical writer, Dr Natasha Das about her life with cancer. When she was 22, Moushumi had a fibroadenoma removed from her breast. She had noticed a small new lump in her breast 16 years later and ignored it for over a year believing that it was one of those benign lumps again. She believes an early diagnosis could have paved way for better treatment options for her. In this interview, she urges women to be better aware, to do regular self-exams and to go for screening. If diagnosed with cancer, she says, one should not lose heart but should fight it with a positive spirit. Cancer, after all, is only another chronic disease that needs lifelong treatment and care.

  18. Tough love: A brief cultural history of the addiction intervention.

    Popular media depictions of intervention and associated confrontational therapies often implicitly reference-and sometimes explicitly present-dated and discredited therapeutic practices. Furthermore, rather than reenacting these practices, contemporary televised interventions revive them. Drawing on a range of literature in family history, psychology, and media studies that covers the course of the last 3 decades, this paper argues that competing discourses about the nuclear family enabled this revival. Historians such as Stephanie Coontz, Elaine Tyler May, and Natasha Zaretsky have demonstrated that the ideal nuclear family in the post-WWII United States was defined by strictly gendered roles for parents and appropriate levels of parental engagement with children. These qualities were supposedly strongly associated with middle-class decorum and material comfort. By the 1970s, this familial ideal was subjected to a variety of criticisms, most notably from mental health practitioners who studied-or attempted to remedy-the problematic family dynamics that arose from, for example, anxious mothers or absent fathers. After psychological professionals began to question the logic of treating maladjusted individuals for the sake of preserving the nuclear family, a therapeutic process for doing exactly that was popularized: the addiction intervention. The delayed prevalence of therapeutic interventions arises from a tension between the psychological establishment that increasingly viewed the nuclear family as the primary site and source of social and psychological ills, and the producers of popular media, who relied on the redemptive myth of the nuclear family as a source of drama.   19. Passive morphing of flying wing aircraft: Z-shaped configuration

    High Altitude, Long Endurance (HALE) aircraft can achieve sustained, uninterrupted flight time if they use solar power. Wing morphing of solar powered HALE aircraft can significantly increase solar energy absorbency. An example of the kind of morphing considered in this paper requires the wings to fold so as to orient a solar panel to be hit more directly by the sun's rays at specific times of the day. An example of the kind of morphing considered in this paper requires the wings to fold so as to orient a solar panel that increases the absorption of solar energy by decreasing the angle of incidence of the solar radiation at specific times of the day. In this paper solar powered HALE flying wing aircraft are modeled with three beams with lockable hinge connections. Such aircraft are shown to be capable of morphing passively, following the sun by means of aerodynamic forces and engine thrusts. The analysis underlying NATASHA (Nonlinear Aeroelastic Trim And Stability of HALE Aircraft), a computer program that is based on geometrically exact, fully intrinsic beam equations and a finite-state induced flow model, was extended to include the ability to simulate morphing of the aircraft into a "Z" configuration. Because of the "long endurance" feature of HALE aircraft, such morphing needs to be done without relying on actuators and at as near zero energy cost as possible. The emphasis of this study is to substantially demonstrate the processes required to passively morph a flying wing into a Z-shaped configuration and back again.

Within the frame of cultural program in the library of Astronomical Observatory was organized a multimedia evening "Astronomy, Poetry and Art." Moderator was Andjelka Kovacevic. Poetry with cosmical inspiration was presented by Milan S. Dimitrijevic, Milcho Tsvetkov, Natasha Stanic, Tetyana Sergeeva, Jan Vondrak and Katya Tsvetkova with musical accompaniment by Zoran Simic and Edi Bon. Also a video presentation of paintings of Zoran Simic, inspired by the Universe accompanied by him by guitar was performed. An excursion to the excavations of the Roman colony Viminacium was organized for the participants. The Sixth Serbian-Bulgarian Astronomical Conference was fruitful and important for the further development of collaboration, common activities and planning of the joint scientific investigations and projects.

    Historically, the Earth's environment and dynamics have influenced and inspired the arts. Art in turn is a powerful vehicle for expression of the natural world. It lends itself to public presentation in many forms and appeals to a diverse audience. Science-art collaborations provide a unique opportunity to connect with the public by taking science out of the classroom and into museums, galleries and public spaces. Here we investigate the use of contemporary digital sound-art in communicating geoscience research to the general public through the installation Crush-2. Crush-2, is an interactive sound-art installation exploring the microscopic forces released during the crushing of rock. Such processes have a strong influence on the sliding behaviour and hence earthquake potential of active faults. This work is a collaboration between sound artist and composer Natasha Barrett (Oslo) and geoscientists Karen Mair (University of Oslo), Alexandre Schubnel (Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris) and Steffen Abe (RWTH Aachen). Using a sonification technique, Barrett has assigned sound recorded from rocks, of different pitches, timbres and durations, to individual fracturing events produced in our 3D fault fragmentation models and laboratory rock breaking experiments. In addition, ultrasonic acoustic emissions recorded directly in the laboratory are made audible for our hearing and feature in the work. The installation space comprises a loudspeaker array and sensor enabled helmet with wireless headphones. By wearing the helmet, moving and listening, the audience explores an artistic interpretation of the scientific data in physical space. On entering the space, one is immediately immersed in a 3D cacophony of sound. Sustained or intermittent pings, burrs, plops and tingles jostle for position in our heads whilst high pitched delicate cascades juxtapose with deep thunder like rumbles. Depending on the user's precise path through the soundscape, the experience changes accordingly

  5. Facebook Recruitment of Vaccine-Hesitant Canadian Parents: Cross-Sectional Study.

    /1745]), partially or not at all up-to-date vaccination status of youngest child (22.06% [242/1097] vs 9.57% [167/1745]), and difficulty in making the decision to vaccinate their youngest child (21.06% [231/1097] vs 10.09% [176/1745]). Out of the Web-based respondents who reported reasons for the difficulties in deciding to vaccinate, 37.2% (83/223) reported lack of knowledge or trust due to conflicting information and 23.8% (53/223) reported the perception of the risk of the adverse effects of vaccines being higher than the risk of disease acquisition. We successfully recruited a large sample of our target population at low cost and achieved a high survey completion rate using Facebook. When compared with the RDD sampling strategy, we reached more vaccine-hesitant parents and younger parents with younger children-a population more likely to be making decisions on childhood immunizations.     Burriesci. Foams with negative Poisson's ratio constitute one of the main examples of auxetic materials available. The focus issue presents two papers on this topic, one on a novel microstructure numerical modeling technique (Pozniak et al ), the other on experimental and model identification results of linear and nonlinear vibration behavior (Bianchi and Scarpa). Nonlinearity (now in wave propagation for SHM applications) is also investigated by Klepka and co-workers, this time in auxetic chiral sandwich structures. Vibration damping and nonlinear behavior is also a key feature of the auxetic structural damper with metal rubber particles proposed by Ma et al . Papers on negative material properties are introduced by the negative stiffness and high-frequency damper concept proposed by Kalathur and Lakes. A cellular structure exhibiting a zero Poisson's ratio, together with zero and negative stiffness, is presented in the work of Virk and co-workers. Negative compressibility is examined by Grima et al in truss-type structures with constrained angle stretching. Finally, Grima and co-workers propose a concept of tunable auxetic metamaterial with magnetic inclusions for multifunctional applications. The contents, which span highly heterogeneous and cross diverse disciplines, such as physics, chemistry, material science and engineering, embrace size scales from nano to macro, and cover different areas, such as new materials, devices and applications. This collection of papers helps elucidate, on the one hand, how heterogeneous and dynamic the EAP field is in general and, on the other hand, the state of the art of the EAP research in Europe. We hope that this focus issue might help to stimulate future work in this emerging field of research and generate new applications. It is shown that the mechanism of the actuators can be analyzed at the molecular level in terms of the balance between the electrostatic and volume exclusion interactions that act among the electrode materials and the electrolyte ions. The special section then presents a master curve for analyzing the electrochemical aging and memory effects of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene). The memory effect of conducting polymers in an electrochemical environment is investigated. This memory effect is related to the electromechanical responses of the conducting polymer. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) is chosen because of its interesting properties—mainly its chemical and electrochemical stabilities. By means of cyclic voltammetry, the influence of the waiting time tw at a holding potential Ew in relation to the conformational relaxation process occurring in the conducting polymer is analyzed. The effect of electrochemical aging on the electrical properties is also explained from the viewpoint of the rearrangement of polymer chains. This completes a brief report on the content of the special section on artificial muscles.     rotations as a medical student, for me, I was in heaven. Because I'm a very detailed person. I like to know every time point, and I like to kind of be like a Sherlock Holmes. Someone comes in the hospital and I've got to figure out why they are sick, how they got sick, and what do they have? And so it's one big detective story from start to finish. So I enjoy doing that. And internists also are kind of like a gatekeeper. You know, they are in charge of the primary care for a lot of their patients, whether it's high blood pressure, diabetes, they're very personal with their patients. They spend a lot of time with them, and that's what I enjoy. Host: Because it's so broad, right? Serena Aunon-Chancellor: Very broad. Host: You need to understand, like you said, everything inside the body. Serena Aunon-Chancellor: Absolutely. Absolutely. Host: So we did a podcast episode earlier -- I can't remember the episode title, but it was with Natasha Cho, another flight surgeon. Serena Aunon-Chancellor: I know her well. Host: Yeah. And she was talking about how different specialties in medicine, you kind of -- it's almost like they have certain personalities. Serena Aunon-Chancellor: They do. Host: And she's emergency medicine. So she has certain -- so internists have this more detailed approach, I guess. Serena Aunon-Chancellor: Detailed approach. Some people say anal, but, you know, I take it as a compliment because what I tell -- I teach a lot of students, interns, and residents. And what I tell them is as an internist you know the most about your patient in the hospital better than anyone -- better than the surgeon you consult, better than the cardiologist you asked to come see, better than anybody else. You have to know everything about your patient. Because you are their primary, their primary care physician. And you tie all those pieces together for them. So when they make all their visits to the different specialists and come back to you, you say, "Okay, let's look at the
