The open abdomen is an ongoing challenge for professionals engaged in its treatment. The change in the integrity of the abdominal wall, the loss of fluids, heat and proteins and contamination of the wound are the main problems. The objective of this article is to describe our experience using the abdominal dressing vacuum-assisted ...
The pedicled transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAM) flap remains a popular choice for patients requesting breast reconstruction. Gastroschisis and omphalocele are the two most common congenital abdominal wall defects. Both are frequently detected prenatally due to routine maternal serum screening and fetal ultrasound. Prenatal diagnosis may influence timing, mode and location of delivery. Prognosis for gastroschisis is primarily determined by the degree of bowel injury, whereas ...

Many thousand laparotomy incisions are created each year and the failure rate for closure of these abdominal wounds is between 1015%, creating a large problem of incisional hernia. In the past many of these hernias have been neglected and treated with abdominal trusses or inadequately managed with high failure rates. The ...
Early definitive closure of abdominal wall defects is possible in most cases. Staged reduction does offer distinct advantages, and mortality and morbidity may be better. Risk stratification may produce outcome and tailor management of difficult cases in the form of a clinical pathway. Stem cell technology may, in the future, offer the ...

Breast reconstruction with transverse rectus abdominis muscle (TRAM) flap raises two contradictory questions: the vascular safety of the flap and the late abdominal wall sequellae. Complex intra-abdominal surgical procedures can now be performed with laparoscopy, and laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become the gold standard in the care of patients with cholelithiasis. This and other surgically challenging procedures involve use of multiple large (10-mm-15-mm) ports. A standard laparoscopic cholecystectomy employs two 10-mm trocar incisions. Development ...

Abdominal incisional hernias in over 40 horses were repaired by exposing the hernial sac and ring and closing the ring with absorbable, interrupted, inverted, cruciate sutures after inverting the hernial sac into the peritoneal cavity. A mesh was sutured, under tension, over the closed ring. Placing the mesh subcutaneously, rather than in the retroperitoneal space, simplified ...
Transgastric endoscopic necrosectomy has been recently introduced as the effective and alternative management of infected pancreatic necrosis and pancreatic abscess. However, up to 40% of patients who undergo endoscopic necrosectomy may need an additional percutaneous approach for subsequent peripancreatic fluid collection or non-resolution of pancreatic necrosis. This percutaneous approach may ...
Five Holstein calves and two foals with omphalophlebitis were treated by surgical marsupialization of the umbilical vein remnant because complete resection of the infected tract was not possible. The abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) causes dysfunctions of various organs through a progressive unphysiologic increase of the intraabdominal pressure. Various techniques for repair of an incisional hernia are available for the surgeon. Conventional suture techniques are quick and easy to perform but they are associated with an unacceptable rate of recurrence and therefore should only be used in exceptional cases.
