    NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)

    Hammer, Philip W.

    2008-04-01

In this talk I will share my experience of election to the Haddon Heights, New Jersey Board of Education and my event-filled path to Board presidency. As a board member, I have worked with taxpayers, teachers, administrators, unions, fellow board members, students, and parents with the goal of improving public education in this small suburban district. In a state where every year the electorate simultaneously votes on their town's school budget, whether to increase their property taxes, and elect a new Board of Education, school board service presents a fascinating set of challenges and opportunities. I hope to convince other physicists that serving on their local school board is a great and personally rewarding way to have direct positive impact on local public education. I will also convey some important lessons learned about politics, education policy, and leadership.

It has been reported widely that the climate in the Arctic is changing rapidly, maybe faster there than anywhere else. In addition, northern sea ice is shrinking, especially in the coastal seas of the Russian Arctic, such as the Laptev Sea. Since 2002, the International Arctic Research Center (IARC), based at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, has been recording long-term oceanographic observations in this region through the Nansen and Amundsen Basins Observation System (NABOS) project. In 2005, the annual NABOS expedition was conducted in parallel with a summer school on board the icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn. This was the third IARC-supported summer school. Two previous summer schools were held in Fairbanks. A total of 24 university students and early career scientists had been chosen, out of about 140 summer school applicants: six from the United States, five from Russia, five from Canada, two from Norway, and one each from Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, New Zealand, and Sweden. Vladimir Alexeev of IARC, the author of this meeting report, served as the director of the school; Louis Fortier of Laval University (Quebec City, Canada) was co-director.

    NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)

    Barber, D. G.; Barber, L.

    2008-12-01

Schools on Board (www.arcticnet.ulaval.ca) was created in 2002 to address the outreach objectives of a network of Canadian scientists conducting research in the High Arctic. The program was piloted with great success with the 2004 research program called the Canadian Arctic Shelf Study (CASES). Since then, the S/B program continues as an integral outreach program of the Canadian Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE) known as ArcticNet. The primary objective of the program is to bridge Arctic climate change research with science and environmental education in the public school system. It is a vehicle for scientists and graduate students to share their research program with high schools and the general public. The program encourages schools to include Arctic Sciences into their science programs by linking Arctic research to existing curriculum, providing resources and opportunities to send high school students and teachers into the Arctic to participate in a science expedition on board the Canadian research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen. The field program is an adventure into Arctic research that exposes students and teachers to the objectives and methods of numerous science teams representing a number of research disciplines and institutions from across Canada and beyond. Face-to-face interactions with scientists of all levels (masters, PhD's, researchers, CRC chairs), hands-on experiences in the field and in the labs, and access to state-of-the-art scientific instrumentation, combine to create a powerful learning environment. In addition to hands-on research activities the program introduces participants to many aspects of Canada's North, including local knowledge related to climate change, culture, history, and politics - within the educational program on the ship and the planned visits to Northern communities. During International Polar Year (IPY) Schools on Board collaborated with international researchers and northern agencies from 11 countries to offer one

  14. Boarding school: the trauma of the 'privileged' child.

    PubMed

    Schaverien, Joy

    2004-11-01

Sending young children to boarding school may be considered a particularly British form of child abuse and social control. The trauma of the rupture with home may be followed by other ordeals such as emotional deprivation and, in extreme cases, physical and sexual abuse. The taboo on expressing emotion, which is common in such institutions, may lead to an encapsulation of the self. Consequently, the needs of the distressed child/self remain active, but unconscious, within the adult. This maybe disguised by an armoured, and very often socially successful, persona. The psychological interplay, between these two facets of the personality, may be detrimental to intimate relationships. In clinical practice the emotional conflict between a desire for intimacy and anticipated exile comes to the fore. Three examples demonstrate how within the transference this may lead to a dependent and erotic atmosphere, which abruptly changes to sever all connection. Changes in the frame, breaks in analysis, and confessions of emotional need are all points at which vigilance is required if such disturbance in analysis is not to end in its abrupt termination. PubMed

Truglio-Londrigan, Marie; Macali, Margaret K; Bernstein, Marilynn; Kaider, Gina; Petersen, Susannah; Tumino, Maria Celeste

    2002-01-01

Professional nurses in nonpublic schools address variables in their practice that are different from nurses in a public school setting. These may include lack of funds for full-time nursing, different educational requirements, incorporation of religious beliefs into the social milieu, and inadequate peer or union support. These variables are problematic when public law health statues require change in school/parent/student relationships. New Jersey's Public Law 1997, Chapter 368 (N.J.S.A. 18A:40-12.5 and 12.6), hereafter referred to as P.L. 1997, c. 368, was enacted because school nurses may not always be available to assess students who are experiencing severe allergic reactions. Since allergies in the school population are common and can lead to anaphylaxis which is life threatening (Smith, 1999), P.L. 1997, c. 368, requires each educational board or chief school administrator/principal of public and nonpublic schools to develop a policy governing epinephrine administration. This article describes how public health nurses, the director of public health nursing, and a faculty consultant in the Bergen County Department of Health Services worked together to produce strategies for the safe implementation of this law. These strategies may provide a template for consideration by other public health nurses who serve the student population. PMID:12406176
