  8. Problems of diffraction and propagation of waves (selected articles)

    NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)

    Makarov, G. I.; Tikhomirov, N. P.; Vyatkin, V. M.

    1984-07-01

The first particle presented concerns the Tropospheric Refraction or radio waves, or more specifically, direct and inverse problems of diffraction on the impedance sphere of a large radius. The exponential profile, which is a precise approximation of the regular component of the atmospheric heterogeneity of the Earth, is selected. Concerning tropospheric refraction, different profiles were studied: bilinear; exponential; and the more general profiles. The second article concerns the refinement of Booker's equation for cylindrical layered inhomogeneous anisotropic media. Booker's equation was originally derived for the case of plane layered anisotropic medium. It is necessary to refine Booker's equation considering the final curvature and terrestrial magnetic field of the modified ionosphere. It was found that the values of the roots of Booker's equation decrease in comparison with the flat plane case, and the effect of final curvature of the ionosphere and magnetic bump of the Earth on the height is manifested such that WKB approximation is inapplicable.

Important discoveries and studies that help inform us about the best methods to evaluate and manage children with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) continue to emerge. This review addresses a number of recent publications regarding important clinical issues for children with ESRD. Despite advances made in previous years, many clinical problems remain in the care of the pediatric dialysis patient. This review covers five topics of recent interest: three articles that address important patient outcome measures such as dialysis adequacy and hemoglobin; two articles that address growth failure in a chronic dialysis patients; five articles that address cardiovascular (CV) morbidity, mortality, and interventions to reduce CV risk in children; two articles that address mineral-bone disorder (MBD) and evidence that past strategies for MBD in children may have increased CV disease; and two articles that address nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, a recently described disorder in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients that occurs in children as well as adults. Using a concise consistent format, each of the 14 key publications is summarized, and the "conclusion" for the practitioner is identified. 18. REVIEW ARTICLE: Angular selective window coatings: theory and experiments

    NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)

    Mbise, G. W.; LeBellac, D.; Niklasson, G. A.; Granqvist, C. G.

    1997-08-01

This review is devoted to the angular selectivity that can be obtained in thin films prepared under conditions such that they contain inclined absorbing regions of sizes much smaller than the wavelength of visible light. The films are of considerable interest as window coatings for energy-conscious architecture and, potentially, in the automotive sector. The theoretical basis for modelling the optical properties is presented, comprising rigorous bounds on the dielectric function, effective medium theories pertinent to different microgeometries and equations for treating the optics of anisotropic thin films. Experimental data are reported for films made by oblique-angle evaporation of Cr and for reactive and non-reactive oblique-angle sputtering of Cr, Al, Ti and W. The highest angular selectivity was obtained with evaporated Cr, whereas the highest luminous transmittance, combined with some angular selectivity, was found with reactively sputtered Al. Films made from Ti showed angular selectivity mainly in the infrared, whereas films made from W could display angular selective electrochromism. Samples of several types were subjected to elaborate theoretical analysis using effective-medium theories and it was seen that theory and experiment could be reconciled using plausible parameters to specify the microstructures of the films. Thus it appears that the angular, spectral and polarization dependences of obliquely deposited films can be understood, at least approximately, in terms of conceptually simple theoretical models.

  19. Engineering bulletin: Pyrolysis treatment

    SciTech Connect

    Not Available

    1992-10-01

The Engineering Bulletins are a series of documents that summarize the latest information available on selected treatment and site remediation technologies and related issues. Pyrolysis is formally defined as chemical decomposition induced in organic materials by heat in the absence of oxygen. Pyrolysis is a thermal process that transforms hazardous organic materials into gaseous components and a solid residue (coke) containing fixed carbon and ash. Upon cooling, the gaseous components condense, leaving an oil/tar residue. Pyrolysis is applicable to a wide range of organic wastes and is generally not used in treating wastes consisting primarily of inorganics and metals. The bulletin provides information on the technology applicability, the types of residuals resulting from the use of the technology, the latest performance data, site requirements, the status of the technology, and where to go for further information.

  5. Our words, our story: a textual analysis of articles published in the Bulletin of the Medical Library Association/Journal of the Medical Library Association from 1961 to 2010*

    PubMed Central

    Funk, Mark E.

    2013-01-01

Purpose: This lecture explores changes in the medical library profession over the last fifty years, as revealed by individual word usage in a body of literature. Methods: I downloaded articles published in the Bulletin of the Medical Library Association and Journal of the Medical Library Association between 1961 and 2000 to create an electronic corpus and tracked annual frequency of individual word usage. I used frequency sparklines of words, matching one of four archetypal shapes (level, rise, fall, and rise-and-fall) to identify significant words. Results: Most significant words fell into the categories of environment, management, technology, and research. Based on word usage changes, the following trends are revealed: Compared to 1961, today's medical librarians are more concerned with digital information, not physical packages. We prefer information to be evidence-based. We focus more on health than medicine. We are reaching out to new constituents, sometimes leaving our building to do so. Teaching has become important for us. We run our libraries more like businesses, using constantly changing technology. We are publishing more research articles. Conclusions: Although these words were chosen by individual authors to tell their particular stories, in the aggregate, our words reveal our story of change in our profession. PMID:23405042

  10. Improving Classification of Protein Interaction Articles Using Context Similarity-Based Feature Selection

    PubMed Central

Chen, Yifei; Sun, Yuxing; Han, Bing-Qing

    2015-01-01

Protein interaction article classification is a text classification task in the biological domain to determine which articles describe protein-protein interactions. Since the feature space in text classification is high-dimensional, feature selection is widely used for reducing the dimensionality of features to speed up computation without sacrificing classification performance. Many existing feature selection methods are based on the statistical measure of document frequency and term frequency. One potential drawback of these methods is that they treat features separately. Hence, first we design a similarity measure between the context information to take word cooccurrences and phrase chunks around the features into account. Then we introduce the similarity of context information to the importance measure of the features to substitute the document and term frequency. Hence we propose new context similarity-based feature selection methods. Their performance is evaluated on two protein interaction article collections and compared against the frequency-based methods. The experimental results reveal that the context similarity-based methods perform better in terms of the F1 measure and the dimension reduction rate. Benefiting from the context information surrounding the features, the proposed methods can select distinctive features effectively for protein interaction article classification. PMID:26339638

    1994-09-01

The Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA), located north of Denver, CO, is a large (27 sq mi.) Superfund site composed of many habitats. To meet specific sampling needs, investigators selected several smaller reference areas representing specific habitats at RMA. The Wellington Wildlife Refuge, for example, more than 50 miles north of RMA, was selected for collecting mallard ducks, mallard eggs, cottontail rabbits, mule deer, and prairie dogs for chemical analyses. And investigators selected land five miles away as a reference site for soils because it was composed of the same soil type as that found at RMA. Investigators should try to match soil characteristics--such as particle size distribution, organic matter content, hydrologic regime, and pH--as closely as possible. For example, organic matter content, pH, and texture determine a soil's cation exchange capacity, or its ability to adsorb positively charged ions such as H(+), Mg(+2), or Cd(+2). These cations may include pollutants as well as nutrients.

  6. A scheme to set preferred magnitudes in the ISC Bulletin

    NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)

Di Giacomo, Domenico; Storchak, Dmitry A.

    2016-04-01

One of the main purposes of the International Seismological Centre (ISC) is to collect, integrate and reprocess seismic bulletins provided by agencies around the world in order to produce the ISC Bulletin. This is regarded as the most comprehensive bulletin of the Earth's seismicity, and its production is based on a unique cooperation in the seismological community that allows the ISC to complement the work of seismological agencies operating at global and/or local-regional scale. In addition, by using the seismic wave measurements provided by reporting agencies, the ISC computes, where possible, its own event locations and magnitudes such as short-period body wave m b and surface wave M S . Therefore, the ISC Bulletin contains the results of the reporting agencies as well as the ISC own solutions. Among the most used seismic event parameters listed in seismological bulletins, the event magnitude is of particular importance for characterizing a seismic event. The selection of a magnitude value (or multiple ones) for various research purposes or practical applications is not always a straightforward task for users of the ISC Bulletin and related products since a multitude of magnitude types is currently computed by seismological agencies (sometimes using different standards for the same magnitude type). Here, we describe a scheme that we intend to implement in routine ISC operations to mark the preferred magnitudes in order to help ISC users in the selection of events with magnitudes of their interest.

  6. Content analysis of a stratified random selection of JVME articles: 1974-2004.

    PubMed

    Olson, Lynne E

    2011-01-01

A content analysis was performed on a random sample (N = 168) of 25% of the articles published in the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education (JVME) per year from 1974 through 2004. Over time, there were increased numbers of authors per paper, more cross-institutional collaborations, greater prevalence of references or endnotes, and lengthier articles, which could indicate a trend toward publications describing more complex or complete work. The number of first authors that could be identified as female was greatest for the most recent time period studied (2000-2004). Two different categorization schemes were created to assess the content of the publications. The first categorization scheme identified the most frequently published topics as admissions, descriptions of courses, the effect of changing teaching methods, issues facing the profession, and examples of uses of technology. The second categorization scheme identified the subset of articles that described medical education research on the basis of the purpose of the research, which represented only 14% of the sample articles (24 of 168). Of that group, only three of 24, or 12%, represented studies based on a firm conceptual framework that could be confirmed or refuted by the study's results. The results indicate that JVME is meeting its broadly based mission and that publications in the veterinary medical education literature have features common to publications in medicine and medical education. 15. The ear, the eye, earthquakes and feature selection: listening to automatically generated seismic bulletins for clues as to the differences between true and false events.

    NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)

    Kuzma, H. A.; Arehart, E.; Louie, J. N.; Witzleben, J. L.

    2012-04-01

Listening to the waveforms generated by earthquakes is not new. The recordings of seismometers have been sped up and played to generations of introductory seismology students, published on educational websites and even included in the occasional symphony. The modern twist on earthquakes as music is an interest in using state-of-the-art computer algorithms for seismic data processing and evaluation. Algorithms such as such as Hidden Markov Models, Bayesian Network models and Support Vector Machines have been highly developed for applications in speech recognition, and might also be adapted for automatic seismic data analysis. Over the last three years, the International Data Centre (IDC) of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) has supported an effort to apply computer learning and data mining algorithms to IDC data processing, particularly to the problem of weeding through automatically generated event bulletins to find events which are non-physical and would otherwise have to be eliminated by the hand of highly trained human analysts. Analysts are able to evaluate events, distinguish between phases, pick new phases and build new events by looking at waveforms displayed on a computer screen. Human ears, however, are much better suited to waveform processing than are the eyes. Our hypothesis is that combining an auditory representation of seismic events with visual waveforms would reduce the time it takes to train an analyst and the time they need to evaluate an event. Since it takes almost two years for a person of extraordinary diligence to become a professional analyst and IDC contracts are limited to seven years by Treaty, faster training would significantly improve IDC operations. Furthermore, once a person learns to distinguish between true and false events by ear, various forms of audio compression can be applied to the data. The compression scheme which yields the smallest data set in which relevant signals can still be heard is likely an

An intensive use of Basque Country Automatic Weather Station (AWS) mesonet data is made in its elaboration. The Basque Meteorology Agency has among theirs functions to serve different requests that often include some type of statistical data, the elaboration of monthly bulletins and the meteorological annual bulletin, published by the Direction of Meteorology and Climatology - Department of Transports and Civil Works - Basque Government. For the monthly meteorological summary elaboration, use of data coming from the ten-minutes AWS network available in our territory is made. In this context, ten-minutes data are used for daily and monthly data statistics. Information is presented, for an easy interpretation, using different tabular format and graphics focused on air temperature and precipitation. The monitoring of this last meteorological element is completed with maps of monthly actual precipitation and its anomalies, expressed as the departure from normal precipitation and percent of normal precipitation.

  7. BJPsych Bulletin author mentoring scheme - helping trainees become published authors.

    Pimm, Jonathan; Galbraith, Niall

    2016-02-01

The publishing world is changing rapidly. Innovations include the move to open access, the rise of social media and the transition to digitalisation. In the light of these developments and with ever-increasing pressures on early career psychiatrists and trainees to publish papers in journals with a recognised pedigree, the BJPsych Bulletin is piloting an author mentoring scheme. Mentors will help clinicians and aspiring academics develop articles from a pedestrian manuscript to one that will hopefully provoke important debate and aid changes in current practices. The scheme will run on a trial basis for approximately 12 months and will then be reviewed. Mentoring has been found to have an important effect of research output including publication and grant success; the hope is that this new initiative at the BJPsych Bulletin will result in such dividends to all involved. PubMed

    Homedes, Nuria; Ugalde, Antonio

    2016-01-01

Readers' trust on the medical literature has been eroded, and journal editors and some editorial boards are taking measures to ensure that authors fully and accurately report research findings and disclose conflicts of interest. This article describes a case study in which the papers editor of the World Health Organization (WHO) Bulletin influenced the content of an article that had been approved by the external reviewers. The editor objected to the publication of the large price differentials of the new molecular entities (NMEs) across the Latin American countries where they had been tested and the limited added therapeutic value of the NMEs that had been assessed by independent drug bulletins. This article summarizes the exchanges with WHO staff and posits the hypothesis that the WHO Bulletin might be affected by the shifts in WHO financing. Several authors have raised concern about the impact of financial conflicts of interest in WHO activities in the field of nutrition, intellectual property, and in the emergency response to the flu pandemic. Moreover, it has been reported that powerful WHO contributors pressured WHO into revising its publication policy. This is the first time that authors question if these conflicts of interest are also affecting the editorial independence of the WHO Bulletin. PMID:27028494

  11. Practice Bulletin Summary No. 152: Emergency Contraception.

    PubMed

    2015-09-01

Emergency contraception, also known as postcoital contraception, is therapy used to prevent pregnancy after an unprotected or inadequately protected act of sexual intercourse. Common indications for emergency contraception include contraceptive failure (eg, condom breakage or missed doses of oral contraceptives) and failure to use any form of contraception (1-3). Although oral emergency contraception was first described in the medical literature in the 1960s, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first dedicated product for emergency contraception in 1998. Since then, several new products have been introduced. Methods of emergency contraception include oral administration of combined estrogen-progestin, progestin only, or selective progesterone receptor modulators and insertion of a copper intrauterine device (IUD). Many women are unaware of the existence of emergency contraception, misunderstand its use and safety, or do not use it when a need arises (4-6). The purpose of this Practice Bulletin is to review the evidence for the efficacy and safety of available methods of emergency contraception and to increase awareness of these methods among obstetrician-gynecologists and other gynecologic providers. Many women are unaware of the existence of emergency contraception, misunderstand its use and safety, or do not use it when a need arises (). The purpose of this Practice Bulletin is to review the evidence for the efficacy and safety of available methods of emergency contraception and to increase awareness of these methods among obstetrician-gynecologists and other gynecologic providers. 13. Selected bibliography on atomic collisions: Data collections, bibliographies, review articles, books, and papers of particular tutorial value

    SciTech Connect

    McDaniel, E.W.; Flannery, M.R.; Thomas, E.W.; Manson, S.T.

    1985-07-01

This bibliography deals mainly with binary and ternary collisions involving electrons, photons, and heavy particles (i.e., atoms, molecules, and ions). The energy range covered for each kind of collision is such that the interactions might be described as electronic, atomic, or chemical--higher-energy collisions involving nuclear forces are not treated. Also covered are particle and photon impact on surfaces, the passage of particles and radiation through bulk matter, and transport phenomena in gases. Practically all of the references cited are data compilations, other bibliographies, review articles, or books. The main objective is to provide easy access to atomic collision data, although some references are included principally for their tutorial value.

  14. Computational fluid dynamics study on the decomposition of ammonia in a selective porous membrane - article no. 42

    SciTech Connect

Athanasios Sideridis; Dimitrios Koutsonikolas; Dimitrios Missirlis

    2008-07-01

The development of alternative technologies for the removal of gas pollutants is an important aspect for the environmental friendliness of energy production. During coal gasification, N{sub 2} contained in coal is converted to NH{sub 3} and, as much as 50% of the ammonia in the fuel gas can be converted to nitrogen oxides (NOx). At these conditions, decomposition seems to be the only applicable solution for the removal of NH{sub 3}. The application of a high temperature catalytic membrane reactor process appears to offer an efficient and cost effective method of removing the NH{sub 3} from coal gasification gas streams. The present work examines the operation of such a selective membrane, used for the decomposition of NH{sub 3}, under a 2-D axissymetric CFD approach where the flow field, the chemical reactions and the selective porous membrane behavior are being modeled and computed. The main target of this effort was to obtain a more detailed view of the flow field and to investigate the decomposition of ammonia in comparison with a simpler 1-D modeling approach and, thus, to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

The coherent structure of a turbulent boundary layer at zero pressure gradient and for the gradient of adverse pressure was investigated. The hydrogen bubble method was employed to examine the turbulent flow in a two dimensional diffusion sector in a water channel. In a separate work, tensor calculus was used to derive three dimensional weak conservation form equations, time dependent flow surface iterative equations, and characteristic theory of non-orthogonal spherical coordinates. These equations and theory are useful in solving the three dimensional turbomachine transonic flow field.

Painter, Jacob T.; Fink, Joseph L.

    2010-01-01

Objective The goal of this project was to categorize and classify bulletin board postings pertaining to pharmaceutical policy from both the professional and lay press. Methods Bulletin board postings were used to supplement in-class discussion to keep students, faculty and staff up-to-date on emerging trends. A bulletin board located in the main classroom area of the College of Pharmacy Building where students would pass by on the way to class and congregate during break periods was used to display articles from various sources concerning topics related to pharmaceutical policy. Information is presented about the primary subject matters addressed in the articles, the types of publications from which they were drawn, and the top ten sources of articles displayed. Results This project showed that coverage of issues related to pharmacists is predominantly seen in newspapers and most pertinent issues are business related. Conclusions It can be seen from this analysis that the issues facing pharmacists are varied. The pharmaceutical policy field is transforming and many of these changes are very relevant to the general population. This is seen from the coverage of all of these issues in the lay press. Fertilizer consumption grew rapidly throughout the 1960's and 1970's and peaked at 23.7 million nutrient tons in 1981. After falling to 18.1 million tons in 1983, use has remained relatively stable, ranging from 19.1 million to 21.8 million tons in 1984-91. Use declined from its peak level because of fewer planted acres and stabilizing rates of application. Retail fertilizer prices, while stable or declining during the 1960's, have varied widely since 1973. The bulletin includes quarterly or semiannual time series for retail fertilizer prices, annual retail and wholesale fertilizer price indexes, fertilizer consumption by plant nutrient and major selected products, consumption of mixed fertilizers and secondary and micronutrients, and statistics on fertilizer use per acre by nutrient in the major producing States for corn, cotton, soybeans, and wheat.

  2. Ten years of seismicity in the euro-mediterranean region: panorama of the EMSC bulletin 1998-2007

    NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)

    Godey, S.; Bossu, R.; Mazet-Roux, G.

    2009-04-01

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) is in charge of collecting seismological parametric data recorded by the local networks of the Euro-Mediterranean region in order to improve data availability for the seismologists and to rapidly produce a comprehensive seismicity bulletin for the region. The aims are to reproduce the seismicity as imaged by the local agencies when events occur within their network and to improve event location in borders regions and off-shore. In this presentation, we show ten years of seismicity that occurred in the Euro-Mediterranean region. Event locations have been obtained in the Euro-Med Bulletin for the period January 1998 to December 2007 by merging parametric data collected from 77 seismological agencies. Thanks to the many contributions, the Euro-Med Bulletin displays a high coverage of the region with the collection of data recorded by 2,625 stations and only two known missing networks. In total, more than 100,000 events are included for the period 1998-2007. We present here the performances of the Euro-Med Bulletin and their evolution over the years. In the spring 2009, the EMSC will produce a specific map of the Euro-Med seismicity. This map, dedicated to a wide audience will require a careful review and didactic selection of data. A special effort is needed to further discard non tectonic events from the current Euro-Med bulletin. This can be achieved by setting up additional collection of event type information (from rockburst to mine activity) with the help of the local networks. Additionally, the currently available bulletin may be recomputed using the global velocity model AK135.

    SciTech Connect

    Not Available

    1991-10-01

Oxidation destroys hazardous contaminants by chemically converting them to nonhazardous or less toxic compounds that are ideally more stable, less mobile, and/or inert. However, under some conditions, other hazardous compounds may be formed. The oxidizing agents most commonly used for the treatment of hazardous contaminants are ozone, hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorites, chlorine, and chlorine dioxide. Current research has shown the combination of these reagents or ultraviolet (UV) light and an oxidizing agent(s) makes the process more effective. Treatability studies are necessary to document the applicability and performance of chemical oxidation systems technology for a specific site. The bulletin provides information on the technology applicability, limitations, a technology description, the types of residuals produced, site requirements, current performance data, status of the technology, and sources of further information.
