  1. Warm Homes, Greener Living: Reducing Energy Poverty in Daniel McIntyre and St. Matthews through Energy Retrofits

    This research examines energy poverty in the Daniel McIntyre and St. Matthews (DMSM) neighbourhoods in the city of Winnipeg. Energy poverty, defined as households spending more than 6% of their income on energy expenditures, affects as many as 50% of households in DMSM. Energy poverty can be alleviated through energy retrofits for dwellings such as weather stripping; increasing insulation in exterior walls, the attic and basement; and installing a high-efficiency furnace. The recommendations include: establishing consistent housing and energy efficiency policies; increasing the flexibility of utility on-bill financing; levying the necessary capital for energy retrofits through municipal financing mechanisms; increasing the knowledge and capacity of local residents; increasing the knowledge and capacity of local contractors for sustainable design and construction; creating a provincial strategy to increase the energy efficiency of social housing; developing low-income energy efficiency programs for rental properties; and increasing access to renewable energy sources.

    Daniel Kirkwood (September 21, 1814-June 11, 1895) was Professor of Mathematics at Indiana University from 1856-1886. During these thirty years his bibliography included ninety six papers and two books (``Meteoric Astronomy" and ``Comets and Meteors"). He published twenty five papers and a third book (``The Asteroids") after he retired; the final paper was published the year before he died. His progency are defined in this paper as those who had personal contact with him while they were students, plus those who were students or associates of his students. The list includes two Presidents of Indiana University (Joseph Swain, who was Kirkwood's successor as Professor of Mathematics, and William Lowe Bryan), nine graduates of Indiana University (Francis P. Leavenworth, John A. Miller, V.M. Slipher, C.O. Lampland, J.C. Duncan, E.C. Slipher, Ross W. Marriott, K.P. Williams, and the author of this paper), one faculty member (W.A. Cogshall) who was not a graduate of Indiana University, and Miller's students at Swarthmore from 1906-1932 (including Charlotte Moore Sitterly, Emma Williams Vyssotsky, Margaret Walton Mayall, and John W. Evans). The author was personally acquainted with all of these progency except Leavenworth and Swain. He was appointed Instructor in Astronomy by President William Lowe Bryan, his last appointment before he retired. Bryan had graduated in 1884, two years before Daniel Kirkwood retired, and this is the author's direct link with Kirkwood.

Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) is a versatile high resolution ground-based solar telescope designed to explore the dynamic Sun and its magnetism throughout the solar atmosphere from the photosphere to the faint corona. The DKIST is currently under construction on Haleakala, Maui, Hawai'i, and expected to commence with science operations in 2019. In this contribution we provide an overview of the high-level science operations concepts from proposal preparation and submission to the flexible and dynamic planning and execution of observations.

    Increased demands for cleaner burning energy, coupled with the relatively recent technological advances in accessing hydrocarbon-rich geologic formations, have led to an intense effort to find and extract unconventional natural gas from various underground sources around the country. One of these sources, the Marcellus Shale, located in the Allegheny Plateau, is currently undergoing extensive drilling and production. The technology used to extract gas in the Marcellus Shale is known as hydraulic fracturing and has garnered much attention because of its use of large amounts of fresh water, its use of proprietary fluids for the hydraulic-fracturing process, its potential to release contaminants into the environment, and its potential effect on water resources. Nonetheless, development of natural gas extraction wells in the Marcellus Shale is only part of the overall natural gas story in this area of Pennsylvania. Conventional natural gas wells, which sometimes use the same technique for extraction, are commonly located in the same general area as the Marcellus Shale and are frequently developed in clusters across the landscape. The combined effects of these two natural gas extraction methods create potentially serious patterns of disturbance on the landscape. This document quantifies the landscape changes and consequences of natural gas extraction for Cameron, Clarion, Elk, Forest, Jefferson, McKean, Potter, and Warren Counties in Pennsylvania between 2004 and 2010. Patterns of landscape disturbance related to natural gas extraction activities were collected and digitized using National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery for 2004, 2005/2006, 2008, and 2010. The disturbance patterns were then used to measure changes in land cover and land use using the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) of 2001.     John Daniel Kraus, 94, of Delaware, Ohio, director of the Ohio State University "Big Ear" Radio Observatory, physicist, inventor, and environmentalist died 18 July 2004 at his home in Delaware, Ohio. He was born on 28 June 1910 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He received a Bachelor of Science in 1930, a Master of Science in 1931, and a PhD in physics in 1933 (at 23 years of age), all from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. During the 1930s at Michigan, he was involved in physics projects, antenna consulting, and in atomic-particle-accelerator research using the University of Michigan's premier cyclotron. Throughout the late 1920s and the 1930s, John was an avid radio amateur with call sign W8JK. He was back on the air in the 1970s. In 2001 the amateur radio magazine CQ named him to the inaugural class of its Amateur Radio Hall of Fame. He developed many widely used innovative antennas. The "8JK closely spaced array" and the "corner reflector" were among his early designs. Edwin H. Armstrong wrote John in July 1941 indicating in part, "I have read with interest your article in the Proceedings of the Institute on the corner reflector...Please let me congratulate you on a very fine piece of work." Perhaps John's most famous invention, and a product of his intuitive reasoning process, is the helical antenna, widely used in space communications, on global positioning satellites, and for other applications. During World War II, John was in Washington, DC as a civilian scientist with the U.S. Navy responsible for "degaussing" the electromagnetic fields of steel ships to make them safe from magnetic mines. He also worked on radar countermeasures at Harvard University's Radio Research Laboratory. He received the U.S. Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award for his war work.     Daniel A. Valencio, Professor of Geophysics at Buenos Aires University, died on May 28, 1987, shortly before his 59th birthday. A pioneer of paleomagnetism and tectonophysics in Latin America, Valencio was an outstanding teacher and investigator in these disciplines.His original employment as an exploration geophysicist in Argentina and Cuba led him to become interested in solid Earth sciences in general in the 1960s. At that time, he laid the foundations of the Laboratory of Paleomagnetism at the Departamento de Ciencias Geologicas of Buenos Aires University. This facility has become a very active center of research and teaching, with emphasis on an interdisciplinary approach that includes the participation of an important group of pupils.

    System safety for the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) is the joint responsibility of a Maui-based safety team and the Tucson-based systems engineering group. The DKIST project is committed to the philosophy of "Safety by Design". To that end the project has implemented an aggressive hazard analysis, risk assessment, and mitigation system. It was initially based on MIL-STD-882D, but has since been augmented in a way that lends itself to direct application to the design of our Global Interlock System (GIS). This was accomplished by adopting the American National Standard for Industrial Robots and Robot Systems (ANSI/RIA R15.06) for all identified hazards that involve potential injury to personnel. In this paper we describe the details of our augmented hazard analysis system and its use by the project. Since most of the major hardware for the DKIST (e.g., the enclosure, and telescope mount assembly) has been designed and is being constructed by external contractors, the DKIST project has required our contractors to perform a uniform hazard analysis of their designs using our methods. This paper also describes the review and follow-up process implemented by the project that is applied to both internal and external subsystem designs. Our own weekly hazard analysis team meetings have now largely turned to system-level hazards and hazards related to specific tasks that will be encountered during integration, test, and commissioning and maintenance operations. Finally we discuss a few lessons learned, describing things we might do differently if we were starting over today.

    Our friend and colleague, Daniel E. Harris, died on December 6th 2015. Dan was a passionate astronomer and world traveller. He led a rich and scientifically productive life until the end. Dan was the first person to receive a PhD in radio astronomy at Caltech where he was a student of John Bolton, one of the fathers of Radio Astronomy and the founder of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory that Dan used for his thesis and first publications. One of Dan's first projects was with Jim Roberts to measure improved positions and flux densities for radio sources in the newly released 3C catalog. During this study, Dan discovered the first flat spectrum radio sources, which he named CTA 21, CTA 26, and CTA 102 and which were later identified as quasars. His PhD thesis resulted in the then definitive study of the evolution of supernova remnants. Later Dan worked on radio galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) first at radio and then at X-ray wavelengths with the Einstein, ROSAT, and Chandra Observatories where he pioneered the new field of relativistic X-ray jets and how they relate to radio galaxies and AGN. After graduating from Caltech in 1961, Dan wanted to see the world. Beginning in 1962, Dan lived in Bologna, Italy, where he worked with Professor Marcello Ceccarelli and the radio astronomy group and was active in the construction of the Northern Cross Radio Observatory ("la Croce"), the first Italian radio telescope. He left Bologna in the Spring of 1964 as his friends remember him to "divenir del mondo esperto e de li vizi umani e del valore"1, as he joined V. Radhakrishnan (Rad) and Dave Morris to sail in a 36-ft trimaran from England to Puerto Rico where he took a position at the Arecibo Observatory working with Marshall Cohen on interplanetary scintillations. It contains everything that an introductory analytical course could possibly want. Daniel Harris's recent book, Exploring Chemical Analysis, is a tamed version of the 1000-pound gorilla for nonchemistry majors. Students will find the same informality, interest, and clarity as in the earlier text but they will also find the book a comfortable companion. Faculty will find an abbreviated but excellent treatment of the subject matter. It contains most of the things that an introductory nonmajors analytical course should want.

In this paper we describe the role of Systems Engineering during these final phases of the project, and present some of the tools, techniques, and methods in use for these purposes. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of lessons learned so far including things we might do differently next time.

    The Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy is the newest professional school to be established in the State of Hawai‘i. The College is based at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, but faculty and students are located and practice on every major island. The mission of the College is to serve the entire Pacific Region. Having reached a respectable level of maturity over the past few years, we are now pleased to announce a partnership that has been established with the Hawai‘i Journal of Medicine & Public Health. With Dr. Carolyn Ma serving as column editor and coordinator, our main objective is for faculty and affiliates of the College to provide communications of contemporary interest in the field of professional pharmacy. Since academic pharmacy is new to the State, this inaugural article (Part 1) describes a brief history of the profession leading up to the founding of the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy. An article describing the mission, vision, and infrastructure of the College, as well as some objectives and accomplishments will follow this inaugural column. The pharmacist is an integral member of the health care team with unique expertise in pharmaceutical care.   3. Deflectometry measurement of Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope primary mirror

    SCOTS (Software Configurable Optical Test System) is a high-precision slope measurement technique based on deflectometry. It utilizes a well-calibrated commercial LCD screen and a diffraction-limited camera to provide high dynamic range, non-contact and full-field metrology of reflective/refractive optics of high accuracy but low cost. Recently, we applied this metrology method on the fabrication of the primary mirror of Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST), which is a 4.2 meter off-axis parabolic segment with more than 8 mm peak-to-valley aspheric departure. Sophisticated calibrations and compensations including camera mapping, screen nonlinearity and screen shape deformation are performed to achieve high accuracy measurement results. By measuring the mirror at different orientations, non-symmetrical systematic errors are eliminated. The metrology system also includes dual cameras that provide self- verification test. The measurement results are being used to guide the fabrication process.

    The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST), formerly the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST), is under construction on Haleakala, Maui HI, with expected instrument integration in 2018 and start of operations during the summer of 2019. In preparation, the National Solar Observatory (NSO) is working with the Science Working Group to formulate a critical science plan for early operations and is calling for community involvement in all stages of its development. The first step in this process is the definition of a set of critical science themes and, under each of these, use-cases that outline the scientific motivation along with the instrument suite and high level observing strategies to be employed. The use-cases will later be refined into observing proposals, which will guide the development of efficient operations tools and procedures and provide the framework for some of the first science observations to be made with the telescope. A web interface has been established to facilitate community engagement.

  7. Polarization optical components of the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope

    The Daniel K Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST), when completed in 2019 will be the largest solar telescope built to date. DKIST will have a suite of first light polarimetric instrumentation requiring broadband polarization modulation and calibration optical elements. Compound crystalline retarders meet the design requirements for efficient modulators and achromatic calibration retarders. These retarders are the only possible large diameter optic that can survive the high flux, 5 arc minute field, and ultraviolet intense environment of a large aperture solar telescope at Gregorian focus. This dissertation presents work performed for the project. First, I measured birefringence of the candidate materials necessary to complete designs. Then, I modeled the polarization effects with three-dimensional ray-tracing codes as a function of angle of incidence and field of view. Through this analysis I learned that due to the incident converging F/13 beam on the calibration retarders, the previously assumed linear retarder model fails to account for effects above the project polarization specifications. I discuss modeling strategies such as Mueller matrix decompositions and simplifications of those strategies while still meeting fit error requirements. Finally, I present characterization techniques and how these were applied to prototype components.

    Congressman Daniel Lipinski (D-Illinois) spoke during the opening session of the EFRC Summit. The 2011 EFRC Summit and Forum brought together the EFRC community and science and policy leaders from universities, national laboratories, industry and government to discuss "Science for our Nation's Energy Future." In August 2009, the Office of Science established 46 Energy Frontier Research Centers. The EFRCs are collaborative research efforts intended to accelerate high-risk, high-reward fundamental research, the scientific basis for transformative energy technologies of the future. These Centers involve universities, national laboratories, nonprofit organizations, and for-profit firms, singly or in partnerships, selected by scientific peer review. They are funded at $2 to $5 million per year for a total planned DOE commitment of $777 million over the initial five-year award period, pending Congressional appropriations. These integrated, multi-investigator Centers are conducting fundamental research focusing on one or more of several ?grand challenges? and use-inspired ?basic research needs? recently identified in major strategic planning efforts by the scientific community. The purpose of the EFRCs is to integrate the talents and expertise of leading scientists in a setting designed to accelerate research that transforms the future of energy and the environment.

    The world's largest ground-based solar telescope is one step closer to operation with the acceptance of the deformable mirror engineered by AOA Xinetics, a Northrop Grumman Corporation company. The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST), currently under construction in Haleakala, Hawaii, will offer unprecedented high-resolution images of the sun using the latest adaptive optics technology to provide its distortion-free imaging.Led by the National Solar Observatory (NSO) and the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), the Inouye Solar Telescope will help scientists better understand how magnetic fields affect the physical properties of the Sun, what roles they play in our solar system and how they affect Earth.Ground-based telescopes, whether observing the sun or the night sky must contend with atmospheric turbulence that acts as a flexible lens, constantly reshaping observed images. This turbulence makes research on solar activity difficult and drives the need for the latest adaptive optics technology.To provide DKIST with the distortion-free imaging it requires, AOA Xinetics designed a deformable mirror with 1,600 actuators, four times the normal actuator density. This deformable mirror (DM) is instrumental in removing all of the atmospheric blurriness that would otherwise limit the telescope's performance. The mirror also has an internal thermal management system to handle the intense solar energy coming from DKIST's telescope. This poster provides the history behind this incredible success story.

    Residency training is designed to provide recent pharmacy school graduates who have the profession's terminal Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree with accelerated growth beyond entry-level professional competence. Placement into residency programs is highly competitive through an application and match process. These programs provide additional training in patient-centered care with advancement of skills in clinical judgment, pharmacy operations, clinical research, project management, and leadership. Approximately 20% of a pharmacy graduating class will apply for a residency. With increasing numbers of pharmacy schools across the country, the availability of residency programs is falling behind applicants. The establishment of the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy (DKICP) has addressed the shortage of pharmacists within the state. In recent years, resident positions in Hawai‘i have doubled to a total of ten first year residency (PGY1) and two second year (PGY2) specialty residencies. Given the limited availability of positions in Hawai‘i, graduates continue to return to the continental US to seek positions, thus increasing the likelihood of them not returning to practice in Hawai‘i. Establishing residency programs is essential to elevate the level of pharmacy practice toward innovation and adherence to best practices, academia/teaching and scholarly research. This descriptive paper will detail the general components and types of pharmacy practice residency, the unique components of the Hawai‘i programs, the career placement of Hawai‘i's programs graduates and future challenges.     In recent years the misuse of antimicrobials has contributed to the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASP) decrease the misuse of antimicrobials by supporting a rational, systematic approach. ASP strategies vary from broad-ranging policies and other decision support tools to prospective audit review of patients on antimicrobials. Many healthcare facilities, however, have been slow to adopt stewardship attributable to the fact that early ASP models required individuals with specialized training, and a significant amount of time and infrastructural investment from facilities. In response to the increasing need for ASPs in Hawai‘i, the Hawai‘i Department of Health (HDOH) partnered with the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy (DKICP) to develop the Hawai‘i Antimicrobial Stewardship Collaborative (HASC), a voluntary collaboration whose main objective is to assist hospital institutions in the implementation of a simplified model of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Core Elements of Hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs. The work of HASC places Hawai‘i's health care institutions in an advantageous position to be able to comply with impending accreditation standards relating to antibiotics and infections.   12. Taking up Daniels' challenge: The case for global health justice.

    In "Just Health", Norman Daniels makes a strong argument for obligations of mutual assistance to fulfill the right to health at the national level and challenges readers to develop arguments supporting obligations of mutual assistance at the global level. In this paper, we argue that there is global responsibility for global health and that there are obligations of justice (beyond charity) to help fulfill (not merely respect or even protect) the right to health in other countries; these we call obligations of global health justice. We show how international human rights law affirms obligations of global health justice - beyond national obligations and beyond obligations of charity - and assert that the human rights approach provides guidance on delineating the relationship between national and global responsibility for fulfilling the core obligations that arise from socioeconomic human rights and addressing global health inequities. We further argue that new ways of providing international assistance, originating from the global HIV/AIDS response, demonstrate the feasibility of improving health outcomes through exogenous efforts and that obligations of global health justice thus carry much weight: the weight of lives not saved. The global response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic has led to the emergence of a new international health assistance paradigm, and the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is, we suggest, an embryonic form of this new paradigm. We conclude that agreements on several common parameters delineating global and national responsibility for global health can advance the movement towards a global institution for the distribution of health-related goods.     In partnership with the Hawai‘i Journal of Medicine & Public Health, the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy (DKICP) is pleased to provide Scripts on a regular basis. In the inaugural “Script,” a brief history of the profession in Hawai‘i was presented up to the founding of the DKICP, Hawai‘i's only academic pharmacy program. In this second part of the inaugural article, we describe some key accomplishments to date. The mission of the College is to educate pharmacy practitioners and leaders to serve as a catalyst for innovations and discoveries in pharmaceutical sciences and practice for promoting health and well-being, and to provide community service, including quality patient care. Examples are given to support the stated goals of the mission. With 341 graduates to date, and a 96% pass rate on the national licensing board exams, the college has played a significant role in improving healthcare in Hawai‘i and throughout the Pacific Region. Additionally, a PhD program with substantial research programs in both pharmacy practice and the pharmaceutical science has been launched. Considerable extramural funding has been garnered from organizations such as the National Institutes of Health and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The economic impact of the College is estimated to be over $50 million each year. With over 200 signed clinical affiliation agreements within the state as well as nationally and internationally, the DKICP has helped to ameliorate the shortage of pharmacists in the state, and has enhanced the profile and practice standard of the pharmacist's role on interprofessional health care teams.     The 4m Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) currently under construction on Haleakala, Maui will be the world’s largest solar telescope. Designed to meet the needs of critical high resolution and high sensitivity spectral and polarimetric observations of the sun, this facility will perform key observations of our nearest star that matters most to humankind. DKIST’s superb resolution and sensitivity will enable astronomers to unravel many of the mysteries the Sun presents, including the origin of solar magnetism, the mechanisms of coronal heating and drivers of the solar wind, flares, coronal mass ejections and variability in solar output. The all-reflecting, off-axis design allows the facility to observe over a broad wavelength range and enables DKIST to operate as a coronagraph. In addition, the photon flux provided by its large aperture will be capable of routine and precise measurements of the currently elusive coronal magnetic fields. The state-of-the-art adaptive optics system provides diffraction limited imaging and the ability to resolve features approximately 20 km on the Sun. Five first light instruments, representing a broad community effort, will be available at the start of operations: Visible Broadband Imager (National Solar Observatory), Visible Spectro-Polarimeter (High Altitude Observatory), Visible Tunable Filter (Kiepenheuer Institute, Germany), Diffraction Limited NIR Spectro-Polarimeter (University of Hawaii) and the Cryogenic NIR Spectro-Polarimeter (University of Hawaii). High speed cameras for capturing highly dynamic processes in the solar atmosphere are being developed by a UK consortium. Site construction on Haleakala began in December 2012 and is progressing on schedule. Operations are scheduled to begin in 2019. We provide an overview of the facility, discuss the construction status, and present progress with DKIST operations planning.

As of mid-2014, the key subsystems have been designed and fabrication is well underway, including the site construction, which began in December 2012.     Proposed joint inspectorates of care homes open the way for health input into residential care. An investigation into quality-of-care measures concluded that health professionals should be included in inspectorate teams, particularly in view of the increasing dependency of residents. No association was shown between cost and quality, but higher costs were associated with short-term car provision. When costing residential care, the impact on community and primary healthcare services may need to be taken into account. PMID:10176463

    The Euler Commission of the Swiss Academy of Sciences intends to terminate the edition of Leonhard Euler's works in the next year 2011 after nearly one hundred years since the beginning of the editorial works. These works include, e.g., Volume 3 of the Series quarta A which will contain the correspondence between Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) and Daniel Bernoulli (1700-1783) and which is currently being edited by Dr. Emil A. Fellmann (Basel) and Prof. Dr. Gleb K. Mikhailov (Moscow). This correspondence contains more than hundred letters, principally from Daniel Bernoulli to Euler. Parts of this correspondence were published uncommented already in 1843. It is astonishing that, apart from mathematics and physics (mainly mechanics and hydrodynamics), many topics addressed concern astronomy. The major part of the preserved correspondence between Euler and Daniel Bernoulli, in which astronomical themes are discussed, concerns celestial mechanics as the dominant discipline of theoretical astronomy of the eighteenth century. It was triggered and coined mainly by the prize questions of the Paris Academy of Science. In more than two thirds of the letters current problems and questions concerning celestial mechanics of that time are treated, focusing on the lunar theory and the great inequality in the motions of Jupiter and Saturn as special applications of the three body problem. In the remaining letters, problems concerning spherical astronomy are solved and attempts are made to explain certain phenomena in the field of "cosmic physics" concerning astronomical observations.

    An alternative method for power spectral density (PSD) estimation—the Daniell method—is revisited and compared to the most prevalent method used in the field of atomic force microscopy for quantifying cantilever thermal motion—the Bartlett method. Both methods are shown to underestimate the Q factor of a simple harmonic oscillator (SHO) by a predictable, and therefore correctable, amount in the absence of spurious deterministic noise sources. However, the Bartlett method is much more prone to spectral leakage which can obscure the thermal spectrum in the presence of deterministic noise. By the significant reduction in spectral leakage, the Daniell method leads to a more accurate representation of the true PSD and enables clear identification and rejection of deterministic noise peaks. This benefit is especially valuable for the development of automated PSD fitting algorithms for robust and accurate estimation of SHO parameters from a thermal spectrum.

  12. Racist appearance standards and the enhancements that love them: Norman Daniels and skin-lightening cosmetics.

    Darker skin correlates with reduced opportunities and negative health outcomes. Recent discoveries related to the genes associated with skin tone, and the historical use of cosmetics to conform to racist appearance standards, suggest effective skin-lightening products may soon become available. This article examines whether medical interventions of this sort should be permitted, subsidized, or restricted, using Norman Daniels's framework for determining what justice requires in terms of protecting health. I argue that Daniels's expansive view of the requirements of justice in meeting health needs offers some support for recognizing a societal obligation to provide this kind of 'enhancement,' in light of the strong connections between skin tone and health outcomes. On balance, however, Daniels's framework offers compelling reasons to reject insurance coverage for skin-lightening medical interventions, including the likely ineffectiveness of such technologies in mitigating racial health disparities, and the danger that covering skin-lightening enhancements would undermine public support for cooperative schemes that protect health. In fact, justice may require limiting access to these technologies because of their potential to exacerbate the negative effects of racism. PMID:19747347

  13. Test anxiety and classroom examination performance: a reply to Daniels and Hewitt (1978).

    Daniels and Hewitt (1978) reported "an extremely strong relationship" between test-anxiety scores and college course examination scores, whereas earlier investigators found smaller relationships between these variables (and one study reported no significant relationship when intelligence was partialed out). Daniels and Hewitt administered the test-anxiety measure immediately after a course examination, whereas the other investigators administered the test-anxiety measures at a different time than the course examinations. In the present study the Sarason Test Anxiety Scale was administered to 40 students immediately after a course examination and to 50 other students after a regular class period. A significant relationship between test-anxiety and examination scores was obtained only for the former group, and no significant relationship was found for either group when intelligence was partialed out. Thus, the high relationship obtained by Daniels and Hewitt may have resulted at least in part from their students' test-anxiety levels being altered due to their having just completed a course examination and from their response to demand characteristics inherent in the experimental procedure. When fully operational in 2019 it will be the world's largest solar telescope with wavelength coverage of 380 nm to 28 microns and advanced Adaptive Optics enabling the highest spatial resolution measurements of the solar atmosphere yet achieved. We review the first-generation DKIST instrument designs, select critical science program topics, and the operations and data handling and processing strategies to accomplish them.

    Many gardeners and horticulturalists seek non-chemical methods to control populations of snails. It has frequently been reported that snails that are marked and removed from a garden are later found in the garden again. This phenomenon is often cited as evidence for a homing instinct. We report a systematic study of the snail population in a small suburban garden, in which large numbers of snails were marked and removed over a period of about 6 months. While many returned, inferring a homing instinct from this evidence requires statistical modelling. Monte Carlo techniques demonstrate that movements of snails are better explained by drift under the influence of a homing instinct than by random diffusion. Maximum likelihood techniques infer the existence of two groups of snails in the garden: members of a larger population that show little affinity to the garden itself, and core members of a local garden population that regularly return to their home if removed. The data are strongly suggestive of a homing instinct, but also reveal that snail-throwing can work as a pest management strategy.

    Daniell cell (i.e. Zn-Cu battery) is widely used in chemistry curricula to illustrate how batteries work, although it has been supplanted in the late 19th century by more modern battery designs because of Cu2+-crossover-induced self-discharge and un-rechargeable characteristic. Herein, it is re-built by using a ceramic Li-ion exchange film to separate Cu and Zn electrodes for preventing Cu2+-crossover between two electrodes. The re-built Zn-Cu battery can be cycled for 150 times without capacity attenuation and self-discharge, and displays a theoretical energy density of 68.3 Wh kg−1. It is more important that both electrodes of the battery are renewable, reusable, low toxicity and environmentally friendly. Owing to these advantages mentioned above, the re-built Daniell cell can be considered as a promising and green stationary power source for large-scale energy storage. PMID:25369833

    The article analyzes certain aspects of "Tesouro descoberto no rio Amazonas" (Treasure discovered on the Amazon River), written by João Daniel (1722-76) during his time in the State of Maranhão e Grão-Pará as a Jesuit missionary between 1741 and 1757; the priest was banished to Lisbon two years before the Company of Jesus was expelled from Portuguese America. This unique record of the mid-eighteenth-century Amazon is a compendium on the region's wealth and potential. Most importantly, it put forward a colonization project that was critical of the model then in place; the new proposal was an integrated whole which took environmental conditions, technology, and social relations into account in the organization of local society. In centering his project on the issue of labor, João Daniel revives, as a metaphor, the idea of the Amazon as an earthly paradise-a notion that had characterized seventeenth-century missionary literature but was practically abandoned in the eighteenth century.     Home Treatment (HT) means acute psychiatric treatment in the patient's usual environment. Conceptually, HT is to be differentiated from other home-based services: It is limited with regard to duration and multiprofessional (e. g. psychiatrist plus psychiatric nursing staff plus social worker); the "24/7"-accessibility is frequently provided by the corresponding background hospital infrastructure. Target group are acutely mentally ill persons with an indication to inpatient treatment, who are willing to cooperate, and absence of endangerment to self and others. In contrast to the Scandinavian and many Anglophone countries where nationwide HT services are delivered, there are not many HT sites in Germany so far. Consequently, empirical data concerning HT in Germany is scarce. In summary, international studies show equivalent effects on psychopathological measures compared to inpatient treatment, reductions with regard to inpatient days, higher patient satisfaction and a trend towards cost-effectivity.     The goal of the present article is to deepen the theme of vitality, the topic of Daniel N. Stern’s last book, Forms of Vitality, published in 2010, which further conceptualized the vitality affects originally proposed in his book The Interpersonal World of the Infant, published in 1985. Vitality forms characterize personal feelings as well dynamics of movements. They are therefore related to feelings of agency and efficacy, and may be shaped and influenced by early interactions between caregivers and infants. In this ambit, infants experience a sense of personal efficacy and a hedonic pleasure when they are recognized and confirmed by their caregivers. The interactional perspective is further discussed considering psychoanalytical contributions and recent infant research. However, vitality, as Stern (2010) highlighted, is grounded in the body and more specifically in the brain. From a neurobiological perspective, we discuss the role of mirror neurons by considering inter subjective exchanges and infantile matching experiences, which influence the sense of vitality.   2. Polarization calibration techniques and scheduling for the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope

    The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST), formerly Advanced Technology Solar Telescope when it begins operation in 2019 will be by a significant margin Earth's largest solar research telescope. Science priorities dictate an initial suite of instruments that includes four spectro-polarimeters. Accurate polarization calibration of the individual instruments and of the telescope optics shared by those instruments is of critical importance. The telescope and instruments have been examined end-to-end for sources of polarization calibration error, allowable contributions from each of the sources quantified, and techniques identified for calibrating each of the contributors. Efficient use of telescope observing time leads to a requirement of sharing polarization calibrations of common path telescope components among the spectro-polarimeters and for those calibrations to be repeated only as often as dictated by degradation of optical coatings and instrument reconfigurations. As a consequence the polarization calibration of the DKIST is a facility function that requires facility wide techniques.

    This study aimed at characterizing the sensory quality of Italian PDO dry-cured Parma, San Daniele and Toscano hams, applying a multi-disciplinary approach. Ham sensory profile as well as physico-chemical, aromatic, morphological and textural characteristics was investigated. There was a great difference between Toscano ham and Parma and San Daniele hams, which were more similar even though differentiated. Toscano ham showed higher scores for pork-meat odor, saltiness, dryness, fibrousness and hardness; accordingly, this ham was described by a high NaCl content and by high values of instrumental hardness, cohesiveness, gumminess and chewiness. Parma ham was characterized by a cured flavor, whereas San Daniele ham showed a wider fatty area and higher pH values. Parma and San Daniele hams were also described by higher values of sweetness, RGB color values and water activity. Sensory characteristics evaluated by trained assessors were correlated to instrumental measures, indicating that instrumental devices can be effectively applied for dry-cured ham characterization.     Norman Daniels's new book, Just Health, brings together his decades of work on the problem of justice and health. It improves on earlier writings by discussing how we can meet health needs fairly when we cannot meet them all and by attending to the implications of the socioeconomic determinants of health. In this article I return to the core idea around which the entire theory is built: that the principle of equality of opportunity grounds a societal obligation to meet health needs. I point, first, that nowhere does Daniels say just what version of that principle he accepts. I then proceed to construct a principle on his behalf, based on a faithful reading of Just Health. Once we actually nail down the principle, I argue, we will find that there are two problems: it is implausible in itself, and it fails to ground a societal obligation to meet health needs.   18. The Daniell cell, Ohm's law, and the emergence of the International System of Units

    Telegraphy originated in the 1830s and 40 s and flourished in the following decades but with a patchwork of electrical standards. Electromotive force was for the most part measured in units of the predominant Daniell cell, but each telegraphy company had their own resistance standard. In 1862, the British Association for the Advancement of Science formed a committee to address this situation. By 1873, they had given definition to the electromagnetic system of units (emu) and defined the practical units of the ohm as 109 emu units of resistance and the volt as 108 emu units of electromotive force. These recommendations were ratified and expanded upon in a series of international congresses held between 1881 and 1904. A proposal by Giovanni Giorgi in 1901 took advantage of a coincidence between the conversion of the units of energy in the emu system (the erg) and in the practical system (the Joule). As it was, the same conversion factor existed between the cgs based emu system and a theretofore undefined MKS system. By introducing another unit X (where X could be any of the practical electrical units), Giorgi demonstrated that a self-consistent MKSX system was tenable without the need for multiplying factors. Ultimately, the ampere was selected as the fourth unit. It took nearly 60 years, but in 1960, Giorgi's proposal was incorporated as the core of the newly inaugurated International System of Units (SI). This article surveys the physics, physicists, and events that contributed to those developments.

  19. Plate coil thermal test bench for the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) carousel cooling system

    Analyses have shown that even a white-painted enclosure requires active exterior skin-cooling systems to mitigate dome seeing which is driven by thermal nonuniformities that change the refractive index of the air. For the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) Enclosure, this active surface temperature control will take the form of a system of water cooled plate coils integrated into the enclosure cladding system. The main objective of this system is to maintain the surface temperature of the enclosure as close as possible to, but always below, local ambient temperature in order to mitigate this effect. The results of analyses using a multi-layer cladding temperature model were applied to predict the behavior of the plate coil cladding system and ultimately, with safety margins incorporated into the resulting design thermal loads, the detailed designs. Construction drawings and specifications have been produced. Based on these designs and prior to procurement of the system components, a test system was constructed in order to measure actual system behavior. The data collected during seasonal test runs at the DKIST construction site on Haleakalā are used to validate and/or refine the design models and construction documents as appropriate. The test fixture was also used to compare competing hardware, software, components, control strategies, and configurations. This paper outlines the design, construction, test protocols, and results obtained of the plate coil thermal test bench for the DKIST carousel cooling system.

    An in-depth industrial hygiene survey was conducted to evaluate worker exposures to phosphine during fumigation of grain at the Early and Daniel Co. grain elevator in Louisville, Kentucky. Stored grain was fumigated using aluminum phosphide. Aluminum-phosphide pellets were also added directly to the grain by the blender as it was poured into the storage containers. Local exhaust ventilation was used at points in the grain-moving system where grain dust was generated. Air samples were taken during full-shift periods at the breathing zone of the weighmaster, two bin floormen, and the blender. Area monitoring samples were also taken. If the operators spend considerable time in the vicinity of a bin which is being filled with grain, there is a likelihood of far greater exposure levels being noted. According to the author, further studies of the use of phosphide products at other elevators should be conducted to determine the effect of environmental and process parameters on phosphine exposures.

    Daniel Sennert was a well-known and influential representative of early 17th-century atomism. He used Aristolelian hylomorphic terminology to put forward medical new ideas on the relationship between matter and soul. His belief in a mere multiplication of preexistent forms/souls since the Creation and in a coexistence of dominant and subordinate forms in natural things led him to the notion of atoms of the soul which via seman could transfer the human soul form one generation to the next. Focussing on the professional and cultural context of Sennert's theory rather than on its retrospective importance in the history of chemistry, this paper argues that it was a largely medical framework from which Sennert developed these ideas, and it stresses Sennert's strong Lutheran allegiances as a major driving force, especially behind his atomist traducianism, i.e. his claim that the human soul was propagated per traducem in tiny particles of matter rather than merely being infused days or weeks after conception, as Catholics and Calvinists alike asserted.   3. The influence of inertia on the efflux velocity: From Daniel Bernoulli to a contemporary theory

    In 1644 Evangelista Torricelli claimed that the outflow velocity from a vessel is equal to the terminal speed of a body falling freely from the filling level h, i.e. v =√{ 2 gh } . Therefore the largest velocities are predicted when the height in a vessel is at the highest position. As a consequence the efflux would start with the highest velocity directly from the initiation of motion which contradicts the inertia principle. In 1738 Daniel Bernoulli derived a much more sophisticated and instationary outflow theory basing on the conservation of potential and kinetic energy. As a special case Torricelli's law is obtained, when inertia is neglected and the cross section of the opening is small compared to the vessel's cross section. To the Authors knowledge, this theory was never applied or even mentioned in text books although it is superior to the Torricelli theory in many aspects. In this paper Bernoulli's forgotten theory will be presented. Deriving this theory using the state of the arts hydrodynamics results in a new formula v =√{ gh } . Although this formula contradicts Torricelli's principle, it is confirmed by all kind of experiments stating that a discharge coefficient of about β = 0 . 7 is needed in Torricelli's formula v = β√{ 2 gh } .

    Simulium wygodzinskyorum Coscarón & Py-Daniel was originally described based on a small number of specimens collected in Junín Province, Peru. We sampled in the same province as the type locality of this species, collecting last-instar larvae and pupae. Since the original larval description of this species was based on a single immature individual, our objective is to provide a last-instar larval description and also to provide additional morphological information on the pupa and male genitalia of this species. Some morphological characteristics not reported before for this species, such as, dorsal tubercles on larval abdominal segments, are described. Abdominal chaetotaxy of pupae is revised and the male ventral plate is fully illustrated, also it is discussed the importance of standardizing the position in which the ventral plate is illustrated. This species was collected in a stream with 2-8 m in width, exposed to sunlight with rocks of different sizes, in low density. PMID:27395175

  5. "Future Solar Physics with the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST)"

    During the last decades, the synergistic development of large aperture telescopes and real time and post facto techniques for image degradation correction, have allowed observations of the solar atmosphere at resolutions up to tens of arcsecond. The analysis of these data, together with the development of sophisticated inversion techniques to infer properties of the magnetic field, have largely improved our understanding of many aspects of solar physics which include the nature and properties of small scale magnetic elements, the fine structuring of sunspots, the properties of granulation and its interaction with the magnetic field, the propagation of waves from the photosphere to the chromosphere, the highly dynamics and fine structuring of the chromosphere. Still several issues, like the origin and nature of the photospheric magnetism, especially in the quiet Sun, the properties of the chromospheric magnetic field, the chromospheric energy budget, and the properties of the photospheric and chromospheric plasma and magnetic field during eruptive events, remain open. Moreover, state-of-the-art magneto hydrodynamic simulations produce structures down to the spatial resolution of the simulations themselves (generally, few kilometers per pixel), which are unresolved in current observations. The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST), with its four meter aperture and state-of-the-art adaptive optics, will allow the acquisition of hundredths of arcsecond spatial resolution data. In this contribution I review the main open questions that the analysis of DKIST observations will allow to address.

  6. Performance of polarization modulation and calibration optics for the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope

    The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (formerly Advanced Technology Solar Telescope) will be the world's largest solar telescope and polarimeter when completed in 2019. Efficient use of the telescope to address key science priorities calls for polarization measurements simultaneously over broad wavelength ranges and calibration of the telescope and polarimeters to high accuracy. Broadband polarization modulation and calibration optics utilizing crystal optics have been designed for this application. The performance of polarization modulators and calibration retarders is presented along with a discussion of the unique challenges of this application. Polarimeters operate over the ranges of 0.38-1.1 microns, 0.5-2.5 microns, and 1.0-5.0 microns. Efficient polarization modulation over these broad ranges led to modulators utilizing multiple wave plates and that are elliptical, rather than linear, retarders. Calibration retarders are linear retarders and are constructed from the same sub-component wave plate pairs as the polarization modulators. Polarization optics must address efficiency over broad wavelength ranges while meeting beam deflection, transmitted wave front error, and thermal constraints and doing so with designs that, though large in diameter, can be affordably manufactured.

    The 4-m Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) is in its seventh year of overall development and its fourth year of site construction on the summit of Haleakala, Maui. The Site Facilities (Utility Building and Support & Operations Building) are in place with ongoing construction of the Telescope Mount Assembly within. Off-site the fabrication of the component systems is completing with early integration testing and verification starting.Once complete this facility will provide the highest sensitivity and resolution for study of solar magnetism and the drivers of key processes impacting Earth (solar wind, flares, coronal mass ejections, and variability in solar output). The DKIST will be equipped initially with a battery of first light instruments which cover a spectral range from the UV (380 nm) to the near IR (5000 nm), and capable of providing both imaging and spectro-polarimetric measurements throughout the solar atmosphere (photosphere, chromosphere, and corona); these instruments are being developed by the National Solar Observatory (Visible Broadband Imager), High Altitude Observatory (Visible Spectro-Polarimeter), Kiepenheuer Institute (Visible Tunable Filter) and the University of Hawaii (Cryogenic Near-Infrared Spectro-Polarimeter and the Diffraction-Limited Near-Infrared Spectro-Polarimeter). Further, a United Kingdom consortium led by Queen's University Belfast is driving the development of high speed cameras essential for capturing the highly dynamic processes measured by these instruments. Finally, a state-of-the-art adaptive optics system will support diffraction limited imaging capable of resolving features approximately 20 km in scale on the Sun.We present the overall status of the construction phase along with the current challenges as well as a review of the planned science testing and the transition into early science operations.

    Natural phenomena hazards (NPH) are unexpected acts of nature that pose a threat or danger to workers, the public, or the environment. Earthquakes, extreme winds (hurricane and tornado), snow, flooding, volcanic ashfall, and lightning strikes are examples of NPH that could occur at the Hanford Site. U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) policy requires facilities to be designed, constructed, and operated in a manner that protects workers, the public, and the environment from hazards caused by natural phenomena. DOE Order 5480.28, Natural Phenomena Hazards Mitigation, includes rigorous new natural phenomena criteria for the design of new DOE facilities, as well as for the evaluation and, if necessary, upgrade of existing DOE facilities. The Order was transmitted to Westinghouse Hanford Company in 1993 for compliance and is also identified in the Project Hanford Management Contract, Section J, Appendix C. Criteria and requirements of DOE Order 5480.28 are included in five standards, the last of which, DOE-STD-1023, was released in fiscal year 1996. Because the Order was released before all of its required standards were released, enforcement of the Order was waived pending release of the last standard and determination of an in-force date by DOE Richland Operations Office (DOE-RL). Agreement also was reached between the Management and Operations Contractor and DOE-RL that the Order would become enforceable for new structures, systems, and components (SSCS) 60 days following issue of a new order-based design criteria in HNF-PRO-97, Engineering Design and Evaluation. The order also requires that commitments addressing existing SSCs be included in an implementation plan that is to be issued 1 year following the release of the last standard.     As telescopes have grown larger and data rates have increased, so have the challenges in providing reliable and accurate calibration strategies for transforming raw data into useful science-ready outputs. The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) will be the largest solar telescope in the world and will use adaptive optics to provide the highest resolution view of the Sun. Its data acquisition rates will be in the hundreds of thousands of frames per day, and it will deliver an average of 12TB of raw solar data on a daily basis. DKIST data will enable significant and transformative discoveries that will dramatically increase our understanding of the Sun and its effects on the Sun-Earth environment. As such, it is a priority of the DKIST Data Center team at the National Solar Observatory (NSO) to be able to deliver timely and accurately calibrated data to the astronomical community for further analysis.The facility will execute a variety of investigator-driven observing programs, which will produce day–to-day variations in the types of acquired data. In combination with large data rates and limited personnel, this will require some degree of automation to be incorporated into the calibration workflows to facilitate the generation of scientifically useful data. The heterogeneity of the data and the unpredictable variations in the seeing conditions (on timescales of seconds or minutes) introduce complexity, which requires a self-adapting, extensible calibration pipeline to provide sufficient automation to the process. Our knowledge of the instrument performance and telescope characteristics will grow as the telescope begins operations, and continuously through the facility lifetime.     We discuss the observational capabilities of the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKSIT), formerly known as the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST), currently under construction on Haleakala Mountain on the island of Maui, Hawaii, with first light anticipated in mid-2019. The DKIST will be a 4-meter aperture Gregorian telescope with advanced environmental control and adaptive optics capable of producing diffraction-limited resolution in visible light of 0.03" or about 20 km in the solar photosphere. The first light instrument suite will include the Visible Broadband Imager (VBI), an interference filter-based instrument capable of 30 Hz imaging of photospheric and chromospheric magnetic structures in the 380 to 800 nm wavelength range. All VBI images will be reconstructed in near-real-time using the KISIP speckle reconstruction algorithm adapted to the DKIST optical and AO configuration. The Visible Spectropolarimeter (ViSP) instrument being fabricated by the High Altitude Observatory (HAO) will enable high-precision slit-spectropolarimetery in any three spectral regions from 380 to 900 nm. The ViSP instrument will be the highest precision spectropolarimeter ever produced with a spatial resolution of approximately 40 km at 600 nm and temporal resolution of 10s to achieve 1e-03 polarimetric precision. The Visible Tunable Filter (VTF) instrument under fabrication at the Kiepenheuer Institute for Solar Physics (KIS) is a triple-etalon Fabry-Perot imaging spectropolarimeter instrument capable of diffraction limited measurements of the Fe I 630.2 nm and Ca II 854.2 nm spectral lines for Doppler and magnetic measurements in the photosphere and chromosphere, respectively. The VTF will also enable the highest spatial and temporal resolution observations yet achieved in the H-alpha line for detailed studies of chromospheric dynamics in response to photospheric magnetic drivers.     The concept of home range was expressed by Seton (1909) in the term 'home region,' which Burr (1940, 1943) clarified with a definition of home range and exemplified in a definitive study of Peromyscus in the field. Burt pointed out the ever-changing characteristics of home-range area and the consequent absence of boundaries in the usual sense--a finding verified by investigators thereafter. In the studies summarized in this paper, sizes of home ranges of Peromyscus varied within two magnitudes, approximately from 0.1 acre to ten acres, in 34 studies conducted in a variety of habitats from the seaside dunes of Florida to the Alaskan forests. Variation in sizes of home ranges was correlated with both environmental and physiological factors; with habitat it was conspicuous, both in the same and different regions. Food supply also was related to size of home range, both seasonally and in relation to habitat. Home ranges generally were smallest in winter and largest in spring, at the onset of the breeding season. Activity and size also were affected by changes in weather. Activity was least when temperatures were low and nights were bright. Effects of rainfall were variable. Sizes varied according to sex and age; young mice remained in the parents' range until they approached maturity, when they began to travel more widely. Adult males commonly had larger home ranges than females, although there were a number of exceptions. An inverse relationship between population density and size of home range was shown in several studies and probably is the usual relationship. A basic need for activity and exploration also appeared to influence size of home range. Behavior within the home range was discussed in terms of travel patterns, travels in relation to home sites and refuges, territory, and stability of size of home range.     The Daniel K Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) will have a suite of first-light polarimetric instrumentation requiring calibration of a complex off-axis optical path. The DKIST polarization calibration process requires modeling and fitting for several optical, thermal and mechanical effects. Three dimensional polarization ray trace codes (PolarisM) allow modeling of polarization errors inherent in assuming a linear retardation as a function of angle of incidence for our calibration retarders at Gregorian and Coudé foci. Stress induced retardation effects from substrate and coating absorption, mechanical mounting stresses, and inherent polishing uniformity tolerances introduce polarization effects at significant levels. These effects require careful characterization and modeling for mitigation during design, construction, calibration and science observations. Modeling efforts, amplitude estimates and mitigation efforts will be presented for the suite of DKIST calibration optics planned for first-light operations.

    The birth of a baby is a family experience. However, in the United Kingdom birth often occurs outside the family environment, in hospital. Both home and hospital births have risks and benefits, but research shows that, for most women, it is as safe to give birth at home as it is in hospital. Women report home-birth to be satisfying with lowered risks of intervention and less likelihood of being separated from their family. It is also more cost effective for the National Health Service. Yet, whilst midwives are working hard to promote home birth as an option, it remains controversial. The aim of this paper is to raise awareness of the safety of home birth and the needs of women and midwives when a home birth is chosen.     Introduction Built environment and health research have focused on characteristics of home neighborhoods, whereas overall environmental exposures occur over larger spatial ranges. Purpose Differences in built environment characteristics were analyzed for home and nonhome locations using GPS data. Methods GPS data collected in 2007–2008 were analyzed for 41 subjects in the Seattle area in 2010. Environmental characteristics for 3.8 million locations were measured using novel GIS data sets called SmartMaps, representing spatially continuous values of local built environment variables in the domains of neighborhood composition, utilitarian destinations, transportation infrastructure, and traffic conditions. Using bootstrap sampling, CIs were estimated for differences in built environment values for home (<833 m of home address) and nonhome (>1666 m) GPS locations. Results Home and nonhome built environment values were significantly different for over 90% of variables across subjects (p<0.001). Only 51% of subjects had higher counts of supermarkets near than away from home. Different measures of neighborhood parks yielded varying results. Conclusions SmartMaps helped measure local built environment characteristics for a large set of GPS locations. Most subjects had significantly different home and nonhome built environment exposures. Considering the full range of individuals’ environmental exposures may improve understanding of effects of the built environment on behavior and health outcomes. PMID:22424255

    In Rudolf Virchow's concept of inflammation, the basic alterations were derived from connective tissue cells, which underwent a marked metamorphosis. This cell-based and static conception was fundamentally broadened and, in part, refuted in the ensuing decade by 2 of his scholars. Friedrich Daniel von Recklinghausen characterized the pus cells in acute inflammation and made the seminal observation of their contractility and mobility. He was the first who described the wandering leukocytes which were demonstrated in particular in experimental keratitis. He also showed that pus cells could migrate from the places of their origin in the interstitium to other tissues and epithelial cells. Von Recklinghausen in addition contributed to the concept of phagocytosis. The work of Julius Friedrich Cohnheim was focused on the mechanisms involved in the extravasation of leukocytes from the blood vessels in the inflamed mesentery of the frog and carefully described the time-dependent alterations: dilatation of the arteries and veins, adhesion of colorless cells to the endothelial cells, and the subsequent transmigration from the capillaries and venules into the interstitial space. In the last few decades, experimental and clinical studies using modern techniques have fully confirmed and extended these basic observations made by von Recklinghausen and Cohnheim more than 100 years ago.     This paper reviews the book "A Brief, Liberal, Catholic Defense of Abortion", by Daniel A. Dombrowski and Robert Deltete. In this book, the authors argue that the Catholic tradition on abortion is very different from the present teaching of the Catholic Church. The issue of abortion is explored in the book through two different philosophies and two major Catholic theologians. The two philosophies are the perversity of sex (abortion distorts sex) and the ontological (the fetus as a person) philosophies. Saint Augustine primarily identified with the perversity of sex and viewed early and late stages of abortion as evil, because it destroys the conceptus, which is the only justification for sex and because human life is present--after sensation and quickening occur. On the other hand, Saint Thomas Aquinas with the ontological approach was less interested in abortion, rather developed hylomorphism. He stated that there is no human life in the womb until the 5th or 6th month, but rather a cluster of cells; thus God cannot infuse a soul into a small cluster of cells since body and soul belong together. The authors believe that this book is a model of reasoned discourse about abortion issues and is proves to be beneficial to a Catholic as well as any thoughtful person. PMID:12178927

    In recent years the misuse of antimicrobials has contributed to the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASP) decrease the misuse of antimicrobials by supporting a rational, systematic approach. ASP strategies vary from broad-ranging policies and other decision support tools to prospective audit review of patients on antimicrobials. Many healthcare facilities, however, have been slow to adopt stewardship attributable to the fact that early ASP models required individuals with specialized training, and a significant amount of time and infrastructural investment from facilities. In response to the increasing need for ASPs in Hawai'i, the Hawai'i Department of Health (HDOH) partnered with the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy (DKICP) to develop the Hawai'i Antimicrobial Stewardship Collaborative (HASC), a voluntary collaboration whose main objective is to assist hospital institutions in the implementation of a simplified model of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Core Elements of Hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs. The work of HASC places Hawai'i's health care institutions in an advantageous position to be able to comply with impending accreditation standards relating to antibiotics and infections. The rapid growth of broadband in the home is also fuelling the demand for people to network their homes. In the near future we will see a number of market sectors trying to 'own' the home by providing gateways either from the traditional ISP or from games and other service providers. The consumer is bombarded with attractive advertising to acquire the latest technological advances, but is left with a plethora of different appliances, which have a bewildering range of requirements and features in terms of networking, user interface, and higher-level communications protocols. In many cases, these are proprietary, preventing interworking. Such technical and usability anarchy confuses the consumer and could ultimately suppress market adoption.

    China will face a dramatic transition from a young to an aged society in the coming 30 to 40 years. In 2000, there were 88,110,000 persons aged 65 years and older, which represented 7% of the population. This percentage is projected to increase to 23% in 2050. Regarding health and long-term care for older adults, the current challenge is to build a comprehensive system of care for older adults. Nursing home care is an inevitable care model for frail older adults in China, which is largely sponsored by the government of China with contributions from some nongovernment organizations and private investors. China is a large country. Within the country, long-term care varies greatly between rural and urban areas, and among the different economic developing areas. In urban and better-developed areas, the range of services exists; however, in rural and less-developed areas, the range of services is limited. The "Star Light Program" and "Beloved Care Engineering" were recent government initiatives to improve aged care. They were launched in 2001 and have dramatically increased the number of both senior centers and nursing homes for older adults. While the quantity of nursing homes is still inadequate with an additional mismatch problem between the supply and demand, the quality of care in most nursing homes is suboptimal. At present, most administrative and frontline workers in nursing homes have received little training in elder care. There is a need for good-quality structured training in long-term care for all types of staff. Moreover, quality standard for care, including standard setting, assessment, and monitoring, is an important issue and needs substantial improvement for nursing homes in China. Currently, 1.5% of older people live in nursing homes and apartments for older people.     The present study summarizes the most important events of life and professional career of Daniel Józsa born 220 years ago. Józsa, the Medical Chief of former Crasna county was born in Uzon of Székely region on 1, October, 1795. From the age of 10 he studied at the Bethlen College in Nagyenyed. In 1822 he attended the University of Medical Sciences in Vienna, where he got his doctor's degree in 1828. He wrote his dissertation on the diseases of the female breast. In the same year he settled with his first wife in Szilágysomlyó, Crasna county, where he was appointed Medical Chief of the county by the Transylvanian Governor. He gained great medical reputation being a lively, correct and energetic man with rational medical principles ahead of his time. He took part and held a presentation at the general meeting of the Hungarian physicians and nature researchers in Kolozsvár in 1844. As a result, he was elected associate member by both the Royal Hungarian Natural Science Society and the Royal Medical Association of Budapest. While he successfully fought against the spread of cholera during the epidemics of 1831, 1836 and 1848-49, he regularly took part in the public life of the county. From his first wife he had 6 children, from his second wife he had one child. He died in the village Bályok in Bihar county on 10, April, 1849. His tomb has been saved for future generations by the generosity of the local Reformed Church and of some doctors from Bályok. PMID:26875296

    The Visible Tunable Filter (VTF) is a narrowband tunable filter system for imaging spectropolarimetry. The instrument will be one of the first-light instruments of the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) that is currently under construction on Maui (Hawaii). The DKIST has a clear aperture of 4 meters. The VTF is being developed by the Kiepenheuer Institut für Sonnenphysik in Freiburg, as a German contribution to the DKIST. The VTF is designed as a diffraction-limited narrowband tunable instrument for Stokes spectro-polarimetry in the wavelength range between 520 and 860 nm. The instrument uses large-format Fabry-Perot interferometers (Etalons) as tunable monochromators with clear apertures of about 240 mm. To minimize the influence of gravity on the interferometer plates, the Fabry-Perots are placed horizontally. This implies a complex optical design and a three-dimensional support structure instead of a horizontal optical bench. The VTF has a field of view of one arc minute squared. With 4096x4096 pixel detectors, one pixel corresponds to an angle of 0.014" on the sky (10 x 10 km on the Sun). The spectral resolution is 6 pm at a wavelength of 600 nm. One 2Dspectrum with a polarimetric sensitivity of 5E-3 will be recorded within 13 seconds. The wavelength range of the VTF includes a number of important spectral lines for the measurement flows and magnetic fields in the atmosphere of the Sun. The VTF uses three identical large-format detectors, two for the polarimetric measurements, and one for broadband filtergrams. The main scientific observables of the VTF are Stokes polarimetric images to retrieve the magnetic field configuration of the observed area, Doppler images to measure the line-of-sight flow in the solar photosphere, and monochromatic intensity filtergrams to study higher layers of the solar atmosphere.

    The computational fluid dynamics code CFX4.2 was used to evaluate steady-state thermal-hydraulic conditions in the Fluor Daniel, Inc., Nuclear Material Storage Facility renovation design (initial 30% of Title 1). Thirteen facility cases were evaluated with varying temperature dependence, drywell-array heat-source magnitude and distribution, location of the inlet tower, and no-flow curtains in the drywell-array vault. Four cases of a detailed model of the inlet-tower top fixture were evaluated to show the effect of the canopy-cruciform fixture design on the air pressure and flow distributions.

    We reflect on Daniel's (2016) finding that a challenge to improving the diets of lower income children is parental worry over food waste that results from children's rejection of healthier food options such as vegetables. This finding has important implications because previous research has indicated novel foods that have a bitter or sour flavor profile (as is the case with many vegetables) must be introduced to children several times before these foods are accepted. We suggest research-based techniques that parents could utilize to reduce the risk of costly food waste, and discuss obstacles that could impede well-intended parents from reaching their goals of improving their children's diets.     169 "injury situations" involving 61 patients were registered in a nursing home during one year. Four patients were sent to hospital. A few patients had several falls. Men were more prone to injury than women. Age itself seemed to be of no importance. Patients on shortterm admittance were at high risk. In general patients with dementia were not at higher risk but suffered the more serious injuries and were also involved in various episodes of patient violence. The risk of injuries is generally high in nursing homes. A certain risk must be accepted, but it is important to introduce prophylactic measures. A larger nursing staff might have prevented some of the situations. PMID:1926073

    This article explores domestic practices of hydropathy in Britain, suggesting that these formed a major contribution to the popularity of the system in the mid-nineteenth century. Domestic hydropathy was encouraged by hydropathic practitioners in their manuals and in the training they provided at their establishments. We argue that hydropathy can be seen as belonging to two interacting spheres, the hydro and the home, and was associated with a mission to encourage self-healing practices as well as commercial interests. Home treatments were advocated as a follow-up to attendance at hydros and encouraged as a low-cost option for those unable to afford such visits. Domestic hydropathy emphasized the high profile of the patient and was depicted as being especially appropriate for women, though in many households it appears to have been a common concern between husbands and wives.     The Home Teleradiology Server system has been developed and installed at the Department of Radiology, Georgetown University Medical Center. The main purpose of the system is to provide a service for on-call physicians to view patients' medical images at home during off-hours. This service will reduce the overhead time required by on-call physicians to travel to the hospital, thereby increasing the efficiency of patient care and improving the total quality of the health care. Typically when a new case is conducted, the medical images generated from CT, US, and/or MRI modalities are transferred to a central server at the hospital via DICOM messages over an existing hospital network. The server has a DICOM network agent that listens to DICOM messages sent by CT, US, and MRI modalities and stores them into separate DICOM files for sending purposes. The server also has a general purpose, flexible scheduling software that can be configured to send image files to specific user(s) at certain times on any day(s) of the week. The server will then distribute the medical images to on- call physicians' homes via a high-speed modem. All file transmissions occur in the background without human interaction after the scheduling software is pre-configured accordingly. At the receiving end, the physicians' computers consist of high-end workstations that have high-speed modems to receive the medical images sent by the central server from the hospital, and DICOM compatible viewer software to view the transmitted medical images in DICOM format. A technician from the hospital, and DICOM compatible viewer software to view the transmitted medical images in DICOM format.
