Revitalizing Arts Education Through Community-Wide Coordination [pdf

NSDL National Science Digital Library

When policy makers and others think about what subjects to cut in public school, funding for the arts is often the first to be considered. This June 2008 report from the Rand Corporation takes a critical look at public-private partnerships in United States cities designed to reinvigorate and restore arts education in public school districts. Authored by Susan J. Bodilly, Catherine H. Augustine, and Laura Zakaras, the 109-page report focuses on programs in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles County, New York City, and Alameda County in Northern California. The study itself was commissioned by The Wallace Foundation and found that "budget cuts resulting from state and local budget problems to the emphasis of the No Child Left Behind Act on reading and math have sharply reduced the number of arts teaching positions." Visitors will note that the study goes into great detail regarding the nature of these programs, and those working in the fields of public policy or arts education will want to let their colleagues and associates know about this timely study.

Astro-Venture Geology Educators' Guide

NSDL National Science Digital Library

This is the third of four curriculum guides focusing on astrobiology and careers. Students are confronted with the challenge of searching for and designing a planet that would be habitable to humans. Using an online, multimedia module, students make changes to the Earth-s interior and draw conclusions about which factors are necessary for human survival. Students then engage in classroom activities that explore the effects of heat and pressure on states of matter, density and movement through convection. They further explore the resulting process of plate tectonics and volcanoes and the role these play in the carbon cycle. Finally, students investigate the Earth-s magnetic field and connect their learning to the systems they explored in Astronomy and Atmospheric Sciences.

Developing questionnaires for educational research: AMEE Guide No. 87

PubMed Central

In this AMEE Guide, we consider the design and development of self-administered surveys, commonly called questionnaires. Questionnaires are widely employed in medical education research. Unfortunately, the processes used to develop such questionnaires vary in quality and lack consistent, rigorous standards. Consequently, the quality of the questionnaires used in medical education research is highly variable. To address this problem, this AMEE Guide presents a systematic, seven-step process for designing high-quality questionnaires, with particular emphasis on developing survey scales. These seven steps do not address all aspects of survey design, nor do they represent the only way to develop a high-quality questionnaire. Instead, these steps synthesize multiple survey design techniques and organize them into a cohesive process for questionnaire developers of all levels. Addressing each of these steps systematically will improve the probabilities that survey designers will accurately measure what they intend to measure. PMID:24661014

Intraoperative ultrasound as an educational guide for laparoscopic biliary surgery

PubMed Central

AIM: To analyze the efficacy of routine intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) as a guide for understanding biliary tract anatomy, to avoid bile duct injury (BDI) after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC), as well as any burden during the learning period. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed using 644 consecutive patients who underwent LC from 1991 to 2006. An educational program with the use of IOUS as an operative guide has been used in 276 cases since 1998. RESULTS: IOUS was highly feasible even in patients with high-grade cholecystitis. No BDI was observed after the introduction of the educational program, despite 72% of operations being performed by inexperienced surgeons. Incidences of other morbidity, mortality, and late complications were comparable before and after the introduction of routine IOUS. However, the operation time was significantly extended after the educational program began (P < 0.001), and the grade of laparoscopic cholecystitis (P = 0.002), use of IOUS (P = 0.01), and the experience of the surgeons (P = 0.05) were significant factors for extending the length of operation. CONCLUSION: IOUS during LC was found to be a highly feasible modality, which provided accurate, real-time information about the biliary structures. The educational program using IOUS is expected to minimize the incidence of BDI following LC, especially when performed by less-skilled surgeons. PMID:18416464

Ergonomics content in the physical education teacher's guide in Rwanda.

PubMed

An important aspect that affects the effectiveness of ergonomic programs is that inefficient mechanical functioning start at an early age and that back pain and posture problems are already evident in children. Children, from a very early age, as well as adults spend an ever increasing amount of their time in front of computer and television screens. The cumulative effect of this sedentary lifestyle leads to improper posture, as well as inefficient and harmful movement patterns and loss of basic physical skills. Physical Education course should deal not only with sports and physical activities, but also with broader aspects of life-skills and physical functionality. It should offer a solution to the modern technology-based society. Keeping this in perspective, Ergonomics content was introduced in Physical Education Teacher's Guide in Rwandan schools with an aim in preventing musculoskeletal disorder in children. PMID:22317277

Simplified Generation of Biomedical 3D Surface Model Data for Embedding into 3D Portable Document Format (PDF) Files for Publication and Education

PubMed Central

The usefulness of the 3D Portable Document Format (PDF) for clinical, educational, and research purposes has recently been shown. However, the lack of a simple tool for converting biomedical data into the model data in the necessary Universal 3D (U3D) file format is a drawback for the broad acceptance of this new technology. A new module for the image processing and rapid prototyping framework MeVisLab does not only provide a platform-independent possibility to create surface meshes out of biomedical/DICOM and other data and to export them into U3D – it also lets the user add meta data to these meshes to predefine colors and names that can be processed by a PDF authoring software while generating 3D PDF files. Furthermore, the source code of the respective module is available and well documented so that it can easily be modified for own purposes. PMID:24260144

AMEE Medical Education Guide No. 22: Refreshing lecturing: a guide for lecturers.

PubMed

This guide provides an overview of research on lecturing, a model of the processes of lecturing and suggestions for improving lecturing, learning from lectures and ways of evaluating lectures. Whilst primarily directed at teachers in the healthcare professions, it is equally applicable to all teachers in higher education. Lectures are the most ubiquitous method of teaching so they are an important part of a teacher's repertoire. Lectures are at least as effective as other methods of teaching at imparting information and explaining. Intention, transmission and output are the basis of a model of lecturing. The key skills of preparing lectures, explaining and varying student activities may be derived from the model. Preparation is based on purposes, content, various structures of lectures and the preparation of audiovisual aids. The essential ingredients of explaining are clarity, interest and persuasion. By varying activities, one can renew attention and develop student learning. Learning from lectures can be improved by teaching students the structure of lectures and methods of listening and note-taking. Student ratings of lectures are useful but over-used and limited ways of evaluating lectures. Equally important is peer review and more important than either student ratings or peer feedback is reflection on the practice of lecturing by individuals and course teams. PMID:12098394

Interprofessional Education and Practice Guide No. 1; Developing faculty to effectively facilitate interprofessional education

PubMed Central

With the growth of interprofessional education (IPE) and practice in health professional schools, faculty members are being asked to assume new roles in leading or delivering interprofessional curriculum. Many existing faculty members feel ill-prepared to face the challenges of this curricular innovation. From 2012–2013, University of Missouri – Columbia and University of Washington partnered with six additional academic health centers to pilot a faculty development course to prepare faculty leaders for IPE. Using a variety of techniques, including didactic teaching, small group exercises, immersion participation in interprofessional education, local implementation of new IPE projects, and peer learning, the program positioned each site to successfully introduce an interprofessional innovation. Participating faculty confirmed the value of the program, and suggested that more widespread similar efforts were worthwhile. This guide briefly describes this faculty development program and identifies key lessons learned from the initiative. Peer learning arising from a faculty development community, adaptation of curricula to fit local context, experiential learning, and ongoing coaching/mentoring, especially as it related to actual participation in IPE activities, were among the key elements of this successful faculty development activity. The Universe Discovery Guides: A Collaborative Approach to Educating with NASA Science

NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)

For the 2009 International Year of Astronomy, the then-existing NASA Origins Forum collaborated with the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) to create a series of monthly “Discovery Guides” for informal educator and amateur astronomer use in educating the public about featured sky objects and associated NASA science themes. Today’s NASA Astrophysics Science Education and Public Outreach Forum (SEPOF), one of a new generation of forums coordinating the work of NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) EPO efforts—in collaboration with the ASP and NASA SMD missions and programs--has adapted the Discovery Guides into “evergreen” educational resources suitable for a variety of audiences. The Guides focus on “deep sky” objects and astrophysics themes (stars and stellar evolution, galaxies and the universe, and exoplanets), showcasing EPO resources from more than 30 NASA astrophysics missions and programs in a coordinated and cohesive “big picture” approach across the electromagnetic spectrum, grounded in best practices to best serve the needs of the target audiences. Each monthly guide features a theme and a representative object well-placed for viewing, with an accompanying interpretive story, finding charts, strategies for conveying the topics, and complementary supporting NASA-approved education activities and background information from a spectrum of NASA missions and programs. The Universe Discovery Guides are downloadable from the NASA Night Sky Network web site at nightsky.jpl.nasa.gov.The presenter will share the Forum-led Collaborative’s experience in developing the guides, how they place individual science discoveries and learning resources into context for audiences, and how the Guides can be readily used in scientist public outreach efforts, in college and university introductory astronomy classes, and in other engagements between scientists, students and the public.

Postgraduate educational pictorial review: Ultrasound-guided vascular access

PubMed Central

Over the last few years the role of ultrasound has steadily increased and has now an established role in anesthesia and critical care. The various applications of this technology in this field include ultrasound-guided insertion of central lines (internal jugular, subclavian, axillary, femoral) and peripheral venous catheters, arterial line insertion, regional blocks etc. The simple reason of using this technology is “You believe what you see”. In this text we will mainly focus on central line, peripheral venous placement and arterial blood flow patterns under ultrasound guidance. In our institution at KFMC, internal jugular vein cannulation is preferred to cannulation of the subclavian vein because of the higher incidence of pneumothorax and subclavian artery puncture associated with the later. The incidence of carotid artery puncture is higher in children younger than five years than in older children during this procedure. The use of ultrasonography has been shown to increase the success rate and decrease the incidence of complications associated with IJV cannulation in adults. We will go through a stepwise approach in identifying and confirming the required blood vessels for ultrasound-guided cannulation using B-mode (2D), color flow doppler and Pulse Wave Doppler

Conversational and enactment patterns for different science inquiry tasks: Implications for educative curriculum guides

NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)

Detailed descriptions of inquiry curricula enactment can support reform efforts by representing inquiry in actual classroom practice. This study describes the conversation and task enactment practices of two urban middle school teachers using the inquiry activities from a project-based science curricula. A microanalysis of interaction methodology was used to identify patterns in task use and conversational practice for each teacher. Findings from this study identified characteristic patterns of inquiry task enactment and teacher conversational practices. Despite detailed teacher guides and similar professional development, the two teachers differed in their use of time, their sequencing of tasks, and their decisions to use, adapt, or add tasks to the curriculum. Characteristic differences were observed between teachers for task instructional attributes with regard to task explicitness, the enforcement of student accountability in learning from those tasks and the utility of the assessment tasks added to the curriculum. Similarities in statement content, style of interaction and questioning practices were observed for inquiry tasks related to asking questions, planning procedures, drawing conclusions, and interpreting results. By contrast, differences were observed between teachers with regard to how they used teacher press and teacher modeling as well as the level and style of questions asked of the students. A cross findings analysis indicates that each teacher held a different orientation to classroom learning and that the observed patterns represent differently held roles by each teacher. These findings have implications for the design of educative curriculum guides for use with inquiry materials. They provide example "maps of enactment" for various stages of a guided inquiry activity. The conversational analysis identifies different types of teacher knowledge that get used in conversations about inquiry tasks. Overall, the study provides examples of how different teacher roles frame the use of inquiry tasks and the teacher conversational practices for these tasks. The author suggests that educative curriculum guides should include information on how teacher roles can support or derail the intended reform practices. These guides would help teachers understand how their own beliefs influence their enactment of curricula and support the development of a classroom orientation that values learning through inquiry.
