For the finite-biased case in this limit, We present analytical results demonstrating that the excitation energy does not vanish for arbitrary coupling. This indicates that the second order phase transition is avoided in the biased Dicke model, which contrasts to the original Dicke model. Cosmic acceleration and Brans-Dicke theory

We study the accelerated expansion of the universe by exploring the Brans-Dicke parameter in different eras. For this, we take the FRW universe model with a viscous fluid (without potential) and the Bianchi type-I universe model with a barotropic fluid (with and without a potential). We evaluate the deceleration parameter and the Brans-Dicke parameter to explore cosmic acceleration. It is concluded that accelerated expansion of the universe can also be achieved for higher values of the Brans-Dicke parameter in some cases.

Generalized Brans-Dicke theories

In Brans-Dicke theory a non-linear self interaction of a scalar field φ allows a possibility of realizing the late-time cosmic acceleration, while recovering the General Relativistic behavior at early cosmological epochs. We extend this to more general modified gravitational theories in which a de Sitter solution for dark energy exists without using a field potential. We derive a condition for the stability of the de Sitter point and study the background cosmological dynamics of such theories. We also restrict the allowed region of model parameters from the demand for the avoidance of ghosts and instabilities. A peculiar evolution of the field propagation speed allows us to distinguish those theories from the ΛCDM model.
Loop quantum Brans-Dicke cosmology

The spatially flat and isotropic cosmological model of Brans-Dicke theory with coupling parameter ω≠-(3)/(2) is quantized by the approach of loop quantum cosmology. An interesting feature of this model is that although the Brans-Dicke scalar field is nonminimally coupled with curvature, it can still play the role of an emergent time variable. In the quantum theory, the classical differential equation which represents cosmological evolution is replaced by a quantum difference equation. The effective Hamiltonian and modified dynamical equations of loop quantum Brans-Dicke cosmology are also obtained, which lay a foundation for the phenomenological investigation to possible quantum gravity effects in cosmology. The effective equations indicate that the classical big bang singularity is again replaced by a quantum bounce in loop quantum Brans-Dicke cosmology.

On 24 May 2008, Andrew Stephen Wilson passed away at the age of 61, in his home in Silver Spring, Maryland, from complications resulting from a painful spinal illness. Andrew was arguably one of the first truly multi-wavelength astronomers of his generation. His scientific work on active galactic nuclei [AGN] spanned the entire electromagnetic spectrum from the radio to the X-rays. Andrew was born in Doncaster, Yorkshire, England, on 26 March 1947. He was the younger of two brothers whose births were separated by the Second World War. His father, Norman, came from a relatively affluent family who were coal merchants. His mother, Mary, came from a less comfortable background, one of seven children, daughter of a skilled cabinet maker/French polisher, who went through a very hard time during the depression. As a teacher, she placed enormous value on hard work and education as a way of gaining advancement in life. When Andrew was four, the family moved to Skipton, a nice market town in the Yorkshire dales. Andrew went to a small village school until age eleven when he entered Ermysted's Grammar School. He was an enthusiastic soccer and cricket player. He never lost his enthusiasm for soccer and supported the local soccer team, Leeds United, for all his life. Andrew also followed the Yorkshire county cricket team. Andrew's interest in astronomy stemmed from the fact that at Ermysted's Grammar School someone donated a four-inch refracting telescope, so he and his friends used to go back in the evenings to investigate the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter, and various nebulae. While an undergraduate at Cambridge, Andrew joined the astronomy club and ground an 8-inch mirror by hand as a part of a telescope that he set up in the backyard of his parents' house. Ramanujan-type congruences for the Andrews spt(n) partition function have been found for prime moduli 5 ≤ ℓ ≤ 37 in the work of Andrews [Andrews GE, (2008) J Reine Angew Math 624:133-142] and Garvan [Garvan F, (2010) Int J Number Theory 6:1-29]. We exhibit unexpectedly simple congruences for all ℓ≥5. Confirming a conjecture of Garvan, we show that if ℓ≥5 is prime and (-δ/ℓ) = 1, then spt[(ℓ2(ℓn+δ)+1)/24] ≡ 0 (mod ℓ). This congruence gives (ℓ - 1)/2 arithmetic progressions modulo ℓ(3) which support a mod ℓ congruence. This result follows from the surprising fact that the reduction of a certain mock theta function modulo ℓ, for every ℓ≥5, is an eigenform of the Hecke operator T(ℓ(2)). PMID:21177432

Following a method of John and Goswami new solutions of coupled Brans-Dicke-Maxwell theory are generated from Zipoy's solutions in oblate and prolate spheroidal coordinates for source-free gravitational field. All these solutions become Euclidean at infinity. The asymptotic behavior and the singularity of the solutions are discussed and a comparative study made with the corresponding Einstein-Maxwell solutions. The possibility of a very large red shift from the boundary of the spheroids is also discussed.
Selective control of the symmetric Dicke subspace in trapped ions

We propose a method of manipulating selectively the symmetric Dicke subspace in the internal degrees of freedom of N trapped ions. We show that the direct access to ionic-motional subspaces, based on a suitable tuning of motion-dependent ac Stark shifts, induces a two-level dynamics involving previously selected ionic Dicke states. In this manner, it is possible to produce, sequentially and unitarily, ionic Dicke states with increasing excitation number. Moreover, we propose a probabilistic technique to produce directly any ionic Dicke state assuming suitable initial conditions.

The worlds of physics and astrophysics were stunned to learn on 22 January 2010 that Andrew Lange, the Marvin L. Goldberger Professor of Physics at Caltech, had taken his own life the night before. He had succumbed to the severe depression that he had suffered from for many years, unbeknownst to even his closest colleagues. Lange will perhaps be best remembered as the co-leader of Boomerang, the balloon-borne experiment that provided the first high-angular-resolution map of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). And while this was certainly his most notable achievement, Andrew amassed a record of accomplishment as an instrumentalist, leader, mentor, and communicator that extended much further. Andrew was born in Urbana, Illinois on July 23, 1957, the son of an architect and a librarian, and raised primarily in Connecticut. His family and early friends remember him as a serious and extremely intelligent child and young man. Andrew Lange's lifelong interest in the CMB was nurtured as an undergraduate at Princeton University by David Wilkinson, and he recalled fondly a summer spent working with John Mather at Goddard Space Flight Center. Andrew Lange went to graduate school in physics at Berkeley where he worked in Paul Richards' group. Although his thesis project, the Berkeley-Nagoya rocket experiment, showed an anomalous sub-millimeter excess in the CMB spectrum that was shortly thereafter shown by a later flight of the same rocket and COBE-FIRAS to be incorrect, Lange's talents were recognized by the physics department at Berkeley who appointed him shortly after his PhD (1987) to their faculty. While on the Berkeley faculty, Andrew obtained early detections of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, upper limits to small-angle CMB fluctuations, and important infrared constraints to the interstellar medium. The talk will be technical with a focus on the various decisions and implementation trade-offs that were made over the course of AFS versions 1 through 4, the development of the Distributed Computing Environment Distributed File System (DCE DFS), and the course of the OpenAFS development community. Because the Isles Dernieres, a series of four barrier islands off the coast of Louisiana, have one of the most rapidly eroding shorelines in the world, geologists at the U.S. Geological Survey and the Louisiana Geological Survey have been monitoring erosion activity over the last several years, said Jeff Williams of the USGS in Reston, Va. Hurricane Andrew, which struck the state on August 26, caused severe erosional damage to these islands that has shortened their lifetimes.Before Andrew struck, geologists projected that Raccoon Island would disappear below sea level by the year 2001 and that Whiskey Island would disappear by 2016. Now, due to the severe erosion from Hurricane Andrew, the scientists claim that the islands may disappear before the turn of the century, and the other islands in the Dernieres chain are expected to follow suit within 2 decades. Raccoon, Whiskey, Trinity, and East islands make up the Isles Dernieres, which existed as one island, known as the Isle Derniere, before an 1856 hurricane and subsequent erosion.
Electrically tunable Dicke effect in a double-ring resonator

We study the finite-element method analysis of the Dicke effect using numerical simulations in an all-optical system of an optical waveguide side-coupled to two interacting ring resonators in a liquid crystal environment. The non-spherical shape of the Sun has been invoked to explain the anomalous precession of Mercury. A brief history of some methods for measuring the solar diameter is presented. Archimedes was the first to give upper and lower values for the solar diameter in the third century before Christ. Then there followed the method of total eclipses, used after Halley's observative campaign of 1715 eclipse. We will also discuss the variant of partial eclipses, useful to measure different chords of the solar disk and the method of Dicke, which correlates oblateness with luminous excess in the equatorial zone.
Elucidating Dicke superradiance by quantum uncertainty

Recently it was shown by Wolfe and Yelin [E. Wolfe and S. F. Yelin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 140402 (2014), 10.1103/PhysRevLett.112.140402] that in the idealized Dicke model of superradiance there is no entanglement among any partitions of the system during the total evolution time of the system. This result immediately causes us to question if other measures from quantum information theory can explain the characteristic release of energy in a short time interval. In this work we identify the uncertainty of purely quantum origin as the property responsible for Dicke superradiance. The quantum uncertainty on the population of each emitter of the sample captured by the Wigner-Yanase skew information (WYSI) is proportional to the correlation radiation rate, which is the part of the total radiated power coming from dipole correlations and responsible for releasing in a short time a great intensity of radiation energy. We also show that the correlation measure called local quantum uncertainty, which is the minimization of the WYSI over all local observables, presents a double sudden change induced by the environment. The time window between these two sudden changes is used to define the interval in which symmetric global observables of the system behave classically for N →∞ , although the emitters remain strongly quantum correlated.

False vacuum decay in Jordan-Brans-Dicke cosmologies

The bubble nucleation rate in a first-order phase transition taking place in a background Jordan-Brans-Dicke cosmology is examined. The leading order terms in the nucleation rate when the Jordan-Brans-Dicke field is large (i.e., late times) are computed by means of a Weyl rescaling of the fields in the theory. It is found that despite the fact that the Jordan-Brans-Dicke field (hence the effective gravitational constant) has a time dependence in the false vacuum at late times the nucleation rate is time independent.

It is obtained here a space conformal to the Einstein space-time, making the transition from an internal bosonic space, constructed with the Majorana constant spinors in the Majorana representation, to a bosonic ''superspace,'' through the use of Einstein vierbeins. These spaces are related to a Grassmann space constructed with the Majorana spinors referred to above, where the ''metric'' is a function of internal bosonic coordinates. The conformal function is a scale factor in the zone of gravitational radiation. A conformal function dependent on space-time coordinates can be constructed in that region when we introduce Majorana spinors which are functions of those coordinates. Relaxing nucleosynthesis constraints on Brans-Dicke theories

We reconsider constraints on Brans-Dicke theories arising from the requirement of successful big bang nucleosynthesis. Such constraints typically arise by imposing that the universe be radiation-dominated at early times, and therefore restricting the contribution that a Brans-Dicke scalar could make to the energy budget of the universe. However, in this paper we show how the dynamics of the Brans-Dicke scalar itself can mimic a radiation-dominated kinematics, thereby allowing successful nucleosynthesis with a sizable contribution to the total cosmic energy density. In other words Newton's constant may dynamically acquire values quite different from that today, even though the evolution mimics radiation domination. This possibility significantly relaxes the existing bounds on Brans-Dicke fields, and opens the door to new possibilities for early universe cosmology. The necessary fine tunings required by such an arrangement are identified and discussed.

I first met Dr. Andrew V Schally (PhD, MDhc (Multi), DSc, Distinguished Medical Research Scientist, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Professor of Pathology and Department of Medicine, Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami, Miami, Florida, USA) many years ago, probably around the beginning of the 1990's in one of his visits to Mexico City (Figure 1). He has many friends in my country since some of the investigations that led to the development of the LHRH agonists were made in a couple of Mexican hospitals in collaboration with some outstanding Mexican physicians that I will mention later. In that time, I was the head of the Department of Urology of the Mexican National Cancer Institute and our Director, Dr. Jaime de la Garza, invited him for a meeting. Cosmological constraint on Brans-Dicke Model

We combine new Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data from Planck with Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data to constrain the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory, in which the gravitational constant G evolves with time. Observations of type Ia supernovae (SNeIa) provide another important set of cosmological data, as they may be regarded as standard candles after some empirical corrections. However, in theories that include modified gravity like the BD theory, there is some risk and complication when using the SNIa data because their luminosity may depend on G. In this paper, we assume a power law relation between the SNIa luminosity and G, but treat the power index as a free parameter. We then test whether the difference in distances measured with SNIa data and BAO data can be reduced in such a model. We also constrain the BD theory and cosmological parameters by making a global fit with the CMB, BAO and SNIa data set. For the CMB+BAO+SNIa data set, we find 0.08 × 10-2 < ζ < 0.33 × 10-2 at the 68% confidence level (CL) and -0.01 × 10-2 < ζ < 0.43 × 10-2 at the 95% CL, where ζ is related to the BD parameter ω by ζ = ln(1 + 1/ω).

General class of vacuum Brans-Dicke wormholes

Recently, traversable wormhole geometries were constructed in the context of f(R) gravity. The latter is equivalent to a Brans-Dicke theory with a coupling parameter {omega}=0, which is apparently excluded from the narrow interval, -3/2<{omega}<-4/3, extensively considered in the literature of static wormhole solutions in vacuum Brans-Dicke theory. However, this latter interval is only valid for a specific choice of an integration constant of the field equations derived on the basis of a post-Newtonian weak field approximation, and there is no reason for it to hold in the presence of compact objects with strong gravitational fields. In this context, we construct a general class of vacuum Brans-Dicke wormholes that include the value of {omega}=0.

The Dicke model with a weak dissipation channel is realized by coupling a Bose-Einstein condensate to an optical cavity with ultranarrow bandwidth. We explore the dynamical critical properties of the Hepp-Lieb-Dicke phase transition by performing quenches across the phase boundary. We observe hysteresis in the transition between a homogeneous phase and a self-organized collective phase with an enclosed loop area showing power-law scaling with respect to the quench time, which suggests an interpretation within a general framework introduced by Kibble and Zurek. The observed hysteretic dynamics is well reproduced by numerically solving the mean-field equation derived from a generalized Dicke Hamiltonian. Our work promotes the understanding of nonequilibrium physics in open many-body systems with infinite range interactions. PMID:25733892

We compare Ya B Zeldovich's ideas about Brans-Dicke theory and Mach's principles, contained in now-classical books, with modern results in this field. Our recent results on the Brans-Dicke cosmology with the cosmological term are presented. The Friedmann-Brans-Dicke equations are written for the flat Universe. The initial conditions for the model are provided by the presently observed Hubble constant, its first time derivative (the deceleration parameter), and matter density. The cosmological scenario with the scale factor not vanishing in the past, corresponding to the absence of the cosmological singularity, is analytically calculated. Instead of the singularity, the scale factor experiences a 'bounce' and demonstrates regular behavior at all times. Some ideas related to Mach's principle are also discussed.

Inflation and dark energy from the Brans-Dicke theory

We consider the Brans-Dicke theory motivated by the f(R)=R+αR{sup n}−βR{sup 2−n} model to obtain a stable minimum of the Einstein frame scalar potential of the Brans-Dicke field. As a result we have obtained an inflationary scalar potential with non-zero value of residual vacuum energy, which may be a source of dark energy. In addition we discuss the probability of quantum tunnelling from the minimum of the potential. Our results can be easily consistent with PLANCK or BICEP2 data for appropriate choices of the value of n and ω.
Negative Correlations and Entanglement in Higher-Spin Dicke States

We consider entanglement criteria based on the spin squeezing inequalities for arbitrary spin systems. Here we use the negative correlations to detect the entanglement in the system with exchange symmetry. For arbitrary spin systems, we can find that the state is entangled, when the minimal pairwise correlation is negative. Then we give a parameter which is defined by the collective angular momentum operator, to detect the entanglement for the Dicke state with N spin -1 particles, and the results are as the same as negative correlation. We also consider the directions of negative correlation, the state is entangled in two orthogonal directions for the superposition of Dicke state without parity.
Counterdiabatic driving in spin squeezing and Dicke-state preparation

A method is presented to transfer a system of two-level atoms from a spin coherent state to a maximally spin squeezed Dicke state, relevant for quantum metrology and quantum information processing. The initial state is the ground state of an initial linear Hamiltonian that is gradually turned into a final quadratic Hamiltonian whose ground state is the selected Dicke state. We use compensating operators to suppress diabatic transitions to unwanted states that would occur if the change were not slow. We discuss the possibilities of constructing the compensating operators by sequential application of quadratic Hamiltonians available in experiments.
Experimental Realization of Dicke States of up to Six Qubits for Multiparty Quantum Networking

We report the first experimental generation and characterization of a six-photon Dicke state. The produced state shows a fidelity of F=0.56±0.02 with respect to an ideal Dicke state and violates a witness detecting genuine six-qubit entanglement by 4 standard deviations. We confirm characteristic Dicke properties of our resource and demonstrate its versatility by projecting out four- and five-photon Dicke states, as well as four-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger and W states. We also show that Dicke states have interesting applications in multiparty quantum networking protocols such as open-destination teleportation, telecloning, and quantum secret sharing.

Using an approach inspired from spin glasses, we show that the multimode disordered Dicke model is equivalent to a quantum Hopfield network. We propose variational ground states for the system at zero temperature, which we conjecture to be exact in the thermodynamic limit. These ground states contain the information on the disordered qubit-photon couplings. These results lead to two intriguing physical implications. First, once the qubit-photon couplings can be engineered, it should be possible to build scalable pattern-storing systems whose dynamics is governed by quantum laws. Second, we argue with an example of how such Dicke quantum simulators might be used as a solver of "hard" combinatorial optimization problems. PMID:25910121

We propose the analog-digital quantum simulation of the quantum Rabi and Dicke models using circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED). We find that all physical regimes, in particular those which are impossible to realize in typical cavity QED setups, can be simulated via unitary decomposition into digital steps. Furthermore, we show the emergence of the Dirac equation dynamics from the quantum Rabi model when the mode frequency vanishes. Finally, we analyze the feasibility of this proposal under realistic superconducting circuit scenarios.

We study information geometry of the Dicke model, in the thermodynamic limit. The scalar curvature R of the Riemannian metric tensor induced on the parameter space of the model is calculated. We analyze this both with and without the rotating wave approximation, and show that the parameter manifold is smooth even at the phase transition, and that the scalar curvature is continuous across the phase boundary. This paper is aimed at a (mostly) pedagogical exposition of the derivation of the motion equations of certain modifications of general relativity. Here we derive in all detail the motion equations in the Brans–Dicke theory with cubic self-interaction. This is a modification of the Brans–Dicke theory by the addition of a term in the Lagrangian which is non-linear in the derivatives of the scalar field: it contains second-order derivatives. This is the basis of the so-called Brans–Dicke Galileon. We pay special attention to the variational principle and to the algebraic details of the derivation. It is shown how higher order derivatives of the fields appearing in the intermediate computations cancel out leading to second order motion equations. The reader will find useful tips for the derivation of the field equations of modifications of general relativity such as the scalar–tensor theories and f(R) theories, by means of the (stationary action) variational principle. The content of this paper is particularly recommended to those graduate and postgraduate students who are interested in the study of the mentioned modifications of general relativity.
Antigravity in F( R) and Brans-Dicke theories

We study antigravity in F( R)-theory originating scalar-tensor theories and also in Brans-Dicke models without cosmological constant. For the F( R) theory case, we obtain the Jordan frame antigravity scalar-tensor theory by using a variant of the Lagrange multipliers method and we numerically study the time dependent effective gravitational constant. As we shall demonstrate in detail by using some viable F( R) models, although the initial F( R) models have no antigravity, their scalar-tensor counterpart theories might or not have antigravity, a fact mainly depending on the parameter that characterizes antigravity. Similar results hold true in the Brans-Dicke model, which we also studied numerically. In addition, regarding the Brans-Dicke model we also found some analytic cosmological solutions. Since antigravity is an unwanted feature in gravitational theories, our findings suggest that in the case of F( R) theories, antigravity does not occur in the real world described by the F( R) theory, but might occur in the Jordan frame scalar-tensor counterpart of the F( R) theory, and this happens under certain circumstances. The central goal of our study is to present all different cases in which antigravity might occur in modified gravity models.

Dick Walker, 67, died 30 March 2005 in Flagstaff, AZ, following a long illness. He was born on 9 March 1938 in Hampton, Iowa and grew up in Waterloo, Iowa. As a child, Dick was fascinated with astronomy and built his own telescope. He saved his pennies and bought and read every book on the subject he could find. He also raised pigeons, naming four of them Hertzsprung, Hoyle, Gamow, and Kron. In 1957, the year Sputnik was launched, Dick began his college studies at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. In 1959, he transferred to the State University of Iowa (subsequently renamed the University of Iowa) in Iowa City, where he earned a BA degree in astronomy and physics in 1963. He joined the staff of the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, where he worked in the Time Service Division for a year before his assignment to the Astrometry and Astrophysics Division. Dick relocated to Flagstaff, AZ, in 1966 to continue his Naval Observatory service at the Flagstaff Station. His retirement in May 1999, ended a thirty-six-year career with USNO. Dick was first and foremost an observational astronomer. From the mid 1960s through the late 1970s, much of Dick's time was devoted to the measurement of binary stars, observing with the 12-inch and 26-inch refractors in Washington and later the 40-inch and 61-inch reflectors in Flagstaff. He also made many trips to Lick Observatory to work with the 36-inch Clark Refractor there. During this time he consulted with Charles Worley, who was observing on the 26-inch, to make sure time was well-spent examining doubles that could not be observed in Washington. This period of observing overlapped with the early years of speckle interferometry, and Dick's observations, made with the largest telescope used for micrometry at the time, were very important for ascertaining the veracity of this new technique. He was a studious and very careful observer of doubles and made over 8,000 measures, resulting in almost 3,000 mean positions

Dick Walker, 67, died 30 March 2005 in Flagstaff, AZ, following a long illness. He was born on 9 March 1938 in Hampton, Iowa and grew up in Waterloo, Iowa. As a child, Dick was fascinated with astronomy and built his own telescope. He saved his pennies and bought and read every book on the subject he could find. He also raised pigeons, naming four of them Hertzsprung, Hoyle, Gamow, and Kron. In 1957, the year Sputnik was launched, Dick began his college studies at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. In 1959, he transferred to the State University of Iowa (subsequently renamed the University of Iowa) in Iowa City, where he earned a BA degree in astronomy and physics in 1963. He joined the staff of the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, where he worked in the Time Service Division for a year before his assignment to the Astrometry and Astrophysics Division. Dick relocated to Flagstaff, AZ, in 1966 to continue his Naval Observatory service at the Flagstaff Station. His retirement in May 1999, ended a thirty-six-year career with USNO. Dick was first and foremost an observational astronomer. From the mid 1960s through the late 1970s, much of Dick's time was devoted to the measurement of binary stars, observing with the 12-inch and 26-inch refractors in Washington and later the 40-inch and 61-inch reflectors in Flagstaff. He also made many trips to Lick Observatory to work with the 36-inch Clark Refractor there. During this time he consulted with Charles Worley, who was observing on the 26-inch, to make sure time was well-spent examining doubles that could not be observed in Washington. This period of observing overlapped with the early years of speckle interferometry, and Dick's observations, made with the largest telescope used for micrometry at the time, were very important for ascertaining the veracity of this new technique. He was a studious and very careful observer of doubles and made over 8,000 measures, resulting in almost 3,000 mean positions

Acharya and Hogan (1973) have introduced a massive scalar field into the usual Brans-Dicke (1961) theory of gravitation. Formally they obtain certain field equations. The assumption of a nonzero divergence for T mu nu (or equivalently the introduction of sources) formally imitates a massive Brans-Dicke and satisfies the condition of Acharya and Hogan that the theory be indistinguishable with the classical test of the Einstein theory. Although it was shown elsewhere that the modified Brans-Dicke theory agrees with the classical test under certain conditions, there were no specified limits on omega, a similar circumstance discovered by Acharya and Hogan for the massive scalar field.
A pioneer of tropical medicine worldwide: Andrew Balfour, of Khartoum

This is an archival account of the career of Sir Andrew Balfour in Khartoum, Sudan during the period 1902 to 1913. As the first director of the Wellcome Tropical Research Laboratories in Khartoum during the period, Andrew Balfour was tasked with establishing the laboratories and at the same time he was engaged in founding the health services in Khartoum. Balfour worked in close collaboration and support from Henry Wellcome and Reginald Wingate, the Governor General of the Sudan. The energetic and meticulous sanitary work of Balfour had a remarkable impact, with Khartoum declared mosquito-free by 1910. Establishing a research base in the laboratories was met with many challenges but eventually Balfour managed to recruit a team of dedicated researchers and to produce well-circulated publications in tropical medicine. Balfour’s work in Khartoum later lead him to a distinguished career in tropical medicine. In 1923 he was appointed the first Director of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. It has been proven by Rana et al. that the n -qubit generic Dicke states |GD (n ,ℓ )> are uniquely determined, among arbitrary states, by their (ℓ +1 ) -partite reduced density matrices, and (n -1 ℓ ) number of them which have one party common to all are sufficient. We show that among arbitrary states, Dicke-type states are also uniquely determined by their (ℓ +1 ) -partite reduced density matrices. Here, by Dicke-type states, we mean all multiqubit pure states that are stochastic local operations and classical communication equivalent to the n -qubit standard Dicke state |D (n ,ℓ )> . Moreover, we find two kinds of subsets of the (ℓ +1 ) -partite reduced density matrices set, both of which can determine the Dicke-type states. More importantly, the number of elements in these two subsets is much smaller than (n -1 ℓ ) .

It is suggested that picturesque medical conditions can, at times, be encountered in literary works composed prior to their clinical delineation. This is true of sleep paralysis, of which the first scientific description was given by Silas Weir Mitchell in 1876. A quarter of a century earlier, Herman Melville, in Moby-Dick, gave a precise account of a case, including the predisposing factors and sexual connotations, all in accord with modern theory. The details of Ishmael's attack of sleep paralysis, the stresses leading up to it, and the associations causing him to recall the experience are given here. PMID:9322274

Failures in the emotional connection between doctors and their patients tend to be reported in terms of compassion fatigue, burn-out, secondary trauma and depression in overlapping and somewhat interchangeable ways. In Moby Dick and Bartleby, Melville interrogates the culturally accepted descriptions of pity and explores the reasons for the limits in human pity he observed and depicted. In an attempt to understand whether the feelings of pity that a patient's suffering can evoke in physicians are sustainable, desirable, or counter-productive, Melville's narratives, along with that of a woman who, while living with advanced cancer experiences the breakdown of a key medical relationship, will be considered. Many of them now strive to manage a continuum of coordinated services to their communities. Their next big step is learning to manage risk for Medicare patients by becoming provider sponsored organizations. Stellar filaments in self-interacting Brans-Dicke gravity

This paper is devoted to the study of the cylindrically symmetric stellar filaments in self-interacting Brans-Dicke gravity. For this purpose, we construct polytropic filamentary models through a generalized Lane-Emden equation in the Newtonian regime. The resulting models depend upon the values of the cosmological constant (due to the scalar field) along with the polytropic index and represent a generalization of the corresponding models in general relativity. We also investigate the fragmentation of the filaments by exploring the radial oscillations through a stability analysis. This stability criterion depends only upon the adiabatic index.
Dynamical complexity of the Brans-Dicke cosmology

The dynamics of the Brans-Dicke theory with a quadratic scalar field potential function and barotropic matter is investigated. The dynamical system methods are used to reveal complexity of dynamical evolution in homogeneous and isotropic cosmological models. The structure of phase space crucially depends on the parameter of the theory ωBD as well as barotropic matter index wm. In our analysis these parameters are treated as bifurcation parameters. We found sets of values of these parameters which lead to generic evolutional scenarios. We show that in isotropic and homogeneous models in the Brans-Dicke theory with a quadratic potential function the de Sitter state appears naturally. Stability conditions of this state are fully investigated. It is shown that these models can explain accelerated expansion of the Universe without the assumption of the substantial form of dark matter and dark energy. The Poincare construction of compactified phase space with a circle at infinity is used to show that phase space trajectories in a physical region can be equipped with a structure of a vector field on nontrivial topological closed space. For ωBD < -3/2 we show new types of early and late time evolution leading from the anti-de Sitter to the de Sitter state through an asymmetric bounce. In the theory without a ghost we find bouncing solutions and the coexistence of the bounces and the singularity. Following the Peixoto theorem some conclusions about structural stability are drawn.
Simulating Dicke-like superradiance with classical light sources

In this paper we investigate the close relationship between Dicke superradiance, originally predicted for an ensemble of two-level atoms in entangled states, and the Hanbury Brown and Twiss effect, initially established in astronomy to determine the dimensions of classical light sources such as stars. By studying the state evolution of the fields produced by classical sources—defined by a positive Glauber-Sudarshan P function—when recording intensity correlations of higher order in a generalized Hanbury Brown and Twiss setup we find that the angular distribution of the last detected photon, apart from an offset, is identical to the superradiant emission pattern generated by an ensemble of two-level atoms in entangled symmetric Dicke states. We show that the phenomenon derives from projective measurements induced by the measurement of photons in the far field of the sources and the permutative superposition of quantum paths identical to those leading to superradiance in the case of single photon emitters. We thus point out an important similarity between classical sources and quantum emitters upon detection of photons if the particular photon source remains unknown. We finally present a compact result for the characteristic functional which generates intensity correlations of arbitrary order for any kind of light source.
Stationary axially symmetric solutions in Brans-Dicke theory

Stationary, axially symmetric Brans-Dicke-Maxwell solutions are reexamined in the framework of the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory. We see that, employing a particular parametrization of the standard axially symmetric metric simplifies the procedure of obtaining the Ernst equations for axially symmetric electrovacuum spacetimes for this theory. This analysis also permits us to construct a two parameter extension in both Jordan and Einstein frames of an old solution generating technique frequently used to construct axially symmetric solutions for BD theory from a seed solution of general relativity. As applications of this technique, several known and new solutions are constructed including a general axially symmetric BD-Maxwell solution of Plebanski-Demianski with vanishing cosmological constant, i.e., the Kinnersley solution and general magnetized Kerr-Newman-type solutions. Some physical properties and the circular motion of test particles for a particular subclass of Kinnersley solution, i.e., a Kerr-Newman-NUT-type solution for BD theory, are also investigated in some detail.

On the basis of a mineral survey, local areas near and within the Andrews Mountain, Mazourka, and Paiute Roadless Areas, California have probable and substantiated mineral-resource potential. The principal metallic mineral resources in these roadless areas are gold, copper, and silver with lead, zinc, and tungsten, as lesser resources. A zone of probable resource potential for talc, graphite, and marble is identified in the Mazourka Roadless Area. Metallic mineralization occurs mostly in vein deposits in silicic and carbonate metasedimentary rocks peripheral to Mesozoic plutons and locally in granitic rocks as well. There is little promise for the occurrence of fossil fuel resources in the roadless areas.
Experimental quantum networking protocols via four-qubit hyperentangled Dicke states.

We report the experimental demonstration of two quantum networking protocols, namely quantum 1→3 telecloning and open-destination teleportation, implemented using a four-qubit register whose state is encoded in a high-quality two-photon hyperentangled Dicke state. The state resource is characterized using criteria based on multipartite entanglement witnesses. We explore the characteristic entanglement-sharing structure of a Dicke state by implementing high-fidelity projections of the four-qubit resource onto lower-dimensional states. Our work demonstrates for the first time the usefulness of Dicke states for quantum information processing. PMID:23215188
The deviation of light path in Einstein-Brans-Dicke theory

Both Jordan-Brans-Dicke (shortened JBD) theory and Brans-Dicke theory in the Einstein’s frame (shortened EBD) are treated as Brans-Dicke theory. However, we learn that only Pauli metric represents the massless spin-two graviton and thus, should be identified as physical. If one just considers the weak field approximation and Newtonian limit, EBD theory gives the same results with Einstein’s general relativity. So, it is necessary to consider strong field effects and cosmological model. The purpose of this paper is to find the exact spherically symmetric metric in the strong field situation, and deduce the deviation of light path in EBD theory.
Non-equilibrium Dynamics of an Optomechanical Dicke Model

Motivated by the experimental realization of Dicke model in optical cavities, we model an optomechanical system consisting of two-level BEC atoms with transverse pumping. We investigate the transition from normal and inverted state to the superradiant phase through a detailed study of the phase portraits of the system. The rich phase portraits generated by analytical arguments display two types of superradiant phases, regions of coexistence and some portion determining the persistent oscillations. We study the time evolution of the system from any phase and discuss the role of mirror frequency in reaching their attractors. Further, we add an external mechanical pump to the mirror which is capable of changing the mirror frequency through radiation pressure and study the impact of the pump on the phase portraits and the dynamics of the system. We find the external mirror frequency changing the phase portraits and even shifting the critical transition point, thereby predicting a system with controllable phase transition.
Cosmic string configuration in a five dimensional Brans-Dicke theory

We consider a scalar field interacting with a cosmic string configuration. The origin of the scalar field is given by a compactification mechanism in the context of a five-dimensional Brans-Dicke theory. We analyze the behavior of a charged cosmic string given by the Maxwell-Chern-Simons term on the 3-brane. The Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation constraint is used to analyze the possibility of optical activity effect in connection with the Brans-Dicke parameter {omega}. We show that the dilatons produced by a cosmic string can decay into gauge bosons with masses given by the compactification modes. The Brans-Dicke parameter {omega} imposes stringent constraints on the mass of the dilaton and help us to understand the energy scales. In this scenario the lifetime of the dilaton which decays into light gauge bosons as well as the dependence of this phenomenon with the Brans-Dicke parameter are estimated.

Local cosmic strings in Brans-Dicke theory with a cosmological constant

It is known that Vilenkin's phenomenological equation of state for static straight cosmic strings is inconsistent with Brans-Dicke theory. We will prove that, in the presence of a cosmological constant, this equation of state is consistent with Brans-Dicke theory. The general solution of the full nonlinear field equations, representing the interior of a cosmic string with a cosmological constant, is also presented.
Cosmic microwave background with Brans-Dicke gravity. I. Covariant formulation

In the covariant cosmological perturbation theory, a 1+3 decomposition ensures that all variables in the frame-independent equations are covariant and gauge invariant and that they have clear physical interpretations. We develop this formalism in the case of Brans-Dicke gravity, and apply this method to the calculation of CMB anisotropy and large scale structures. We modify the publicly available Boltzmann code CAMB to calculate numerically the evolution of the background and adiabatic perturbations, and obtain the temperature and polarization spectra of Brans-Dicke theory for both scalar and tensor modes; the tensor mode results for Brans-Dicke gravity are obtained numerically for the first time. We first present our theoretical formalism in detail, and then explicitly describe the techniques used in modifying the CAMB code. These techniques are also very useful for other gravity models. Next we compare the CMB and large scale structure spectra in Brans-Dicke theory with those in the standard general relativity theory. At last, we investigate the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect and the CMB lensing effect in Brans-Dicke theory. Constraints on the Brans-Dicke model with current observational data are presented in a companion paper [F. Wu and X. Chen, following Article, Phys. Rev. D 82, 083003 (2010)] (paper II).

Non-Singular BRANS-DICKE-Λ Cosmology

We discuss a Brans-Dicke model with a cosmological constant, negative value of the w parameter and an arbitrary (in general non-vanishing) scale factor at the Big Bang. The Friedman equations for a flat universe are considered. The current observational values for Hubble constant H0 and deceleration parameter q0 play the role of initial conditions. We follow the approach of Ref. 1 in order to solve field equations analytically. In Ref. 1 only positive values of w were considered, we extend the study to a complete set of possible w values. Our main result is that the scale factor (during it's evolution back in time direction) may not vanish, unlike in the standard ΛCDM case. In other words, the considered model demonstrates a cosmological bounce instead of the initial singularity. The famous formula, that leads to the bounce, is valid only for the dust-filled universe with p = 0 and, therefore, is not adequate for the Early Universe hot stage when the bounce happens. So, our results are qualitative in nature and must be used to obtain initial values for the hot stage of the Universe.
Rotating black branes in Brans-Dicke-Born-Infeld theory

In this paper, we present a new class of charged rotating black brane solutions in the higher dimensional Brans-Dicke-Born-Infeld theory and investigate their properties. Solving the field equations directly is a nontrivial task because they include the second derivatives of the scalar field. We remove this difficulty through a conformal transformation. Also, we find that the suitable Lagrangian of Einstein-Born-Infeld-dilaton gravity is not the same as presented by Dehghani et al. [J. Cosmol. Astropart. Phys. 0702, 020 (2007)]. We show that the given solutions can present black brane, with inner and outer event horizons, an extreme black brane, or a naked singularity provided the parameters of the solutions are chosen suitably. These black brane solutions are neither asymptotically flat nor (anti-)de Sitter. Then we calculate finite Euclidean action, the conserved, and thermodynamic quantities through the use of counterterm method. Finally, we argue that these quantities satisfy the first law of thermodynamics, and the entropy does not follow the area law.
The spin-Dicke effect in OLED magnetoresistance

Pairs of charge-carrier spins in organic semiconductors constitute four-level systems that can be driven electromagnetically. Given appropriate conditions for ultrastrong coupling--weak local hyperfine fields Bhyp, large magnetic resonant driving fields B1 and low static fields B0 that define Zeeman splitting--the spin-Dicke effect, a collective transition of spin states, has been predicted. This parameter range is challenging to probe by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy because thermal magnetic polarization is negligible. It is accessed through spin-dependent conductivity that is controlled by electron-hole pairs of singlet and triplet spin-permutation symmetry without the need of thermal spin polarization. Signatures of collective behaviour of carrier spins are revealed in the steady-state magnetoresistance of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), rather than through radiative transitions. For intermediate B1, the a.c.-Zeeman effect appears. For large B1, a collective spin-ensemble state arises, inverting the current change under resonance and removing power broadening, thereby offering a unique window to ambient macroscopic quantum coherence.
From the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard to the Dicke model

We discuss the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model describing the superfluid-Mott insulator transition of polaritons (i.e., dressed photon-qubit states) in coupled qubit-cavity arrays in the crossover from strong to weak correlations. In the strongly correlated regime the phase diagram and the elementary excitations of lattice polaritons near the Mott lobes are calculated analytically using a slave-boson theory (SBT). The opposite regime of weakly interacting polariton superfluids is described by a weak-coupling mean-field theory for a generalized multi-mode Dicke model. We show that a remarkable relation between the two theories exists in the limit of large photon bandwidth and large negative detuning, i.e., when the nature of polariton quasiparticles becomes qubit-like. In this regime, the weak-coupling theory predicts the existence of a single Mott lobe with a change of the universality class of the phase transition at the tip of the lobe, in perfect agreement with the SBT. Shot noise in quantum dots in presence of Fano and Dicke effects in Kondo regime

The quantum dots allow studying systematically quantum-interference effects as Fano and Dicke effects due to the possibility of continuous tuning the relevant parameters governing the properties of these resonances, in equilibrium and nonequilibrium regimes. The condition for the Fano resonance is the existence of two scattering channels: a discrete level and a broad continuum band. On the other hand, the electronic version of the Dicke effect is analogous to the Dicke effect in optics, which takes place in the spontaneous emission of two closely-lying atoms radiating a photon into the same environment. In quantum dots this effect is due to quantum interference in the passage of an electron through two closely lying resonant states of the quantum dots coupled to common leads. In this work, we present a systematic investigation of the influence of the Dicke effect on shot-noise and Fano factor in a cross-shaped quantum dot array. The relevant quantities are obtained by the non-equilibrium Green's function technique. Our results show that at zero temperature, the electrical current, shot-noise and Fano factor exhibit characteristics of the Dicke effect. Modified Brans-Dicke theory with space-time anisotropic parameters

We consider the ADM formalism of the Brans-Dicke theory and propose a space-time anisotropic extension of the theory by introducing five free parameters. We find that the resulting theory reveals many interesting aspects which are not present in the original BD theory. We first discuss the ghost instability and strong coupling problems which are present in the gravity theory without the full diffeomorphism symmetry and show that they can be avoided in a region of the parameter space. We also perform the post-Newtonian approximation and show that the constraint of the Brans-Dicke parameter ω{sub BD} being large to be consistent with the solar system observations could be evaded in the extended theory. We also discuss that accelerating Universe can be achieved without the need of the potential for the Brans-Dicke scalar.
Cosmology of some holographic dark energy models in chameleonic Brans-Dicke gravity

We study some holographic dark energy models in chameleonic Brans-Dicke field gravity by taking interaction between the dark energy components in FRW universe. Firstly, we take the holographic dark energy model with Granda-Oliveros cut-off and discuss interacting as well as non-interacting cases. Secondly, we consider the holographic dark energy with both power-law as well as logarithmic corrections using Hubble scale as infrared cut-off in interacting case only. We describe the evolution of some cosmological parameters for these holographic dark energy models. It is concluded that the phantom crossing can be achieved more easily in the presence of chameleonic Brans-Dicke field as compared to simple Brans-Dicke as well as Einstein's gravity. Also, the deceleration parameter strongly confirms the accelerated expanding behavior of the universe.

Late time cosmic acceleration from vacuum Brans-Dicke theory in 5D

We show that the scalar-vacuum Brans-Dicke equations in 5D are equivalent to Brans-Dicke theory in 4D with a self-interacting potential and an effective matter field. The cosmological implication, in the context of FRW models, is that the observed accelerated expansion of the universe comes naturally from the condition that the scalar field is not a ghost, i.e. ω > -3/2. We find an effective matter-dominated 4D universe which shows accelerated expansion if -3/2 < ω < -1. We study the question of whether accelerated expansion can be made compatible with large values of ω, within the framework of a 5D scalar-vacuum Brans-Dicke theory with variable, instead of constant, parameter ω. In this framework, and based on a general class of solutions of the field equations, we demonstrate that accelerated expansion is incompatible with large values of ω.
Five dimensional spherically symmetric cosmological model in Brans-Dicke theory of gravitation

In this paper, we consider the spherically symmetric space-time in five dimensions in Brans-Dicke (Phys. Rev. 124:925, 1961) theory of gravitation in the presence of perfect fluid distribution. A determinate solution of the highly non-linear field equations is presented using (i) relation between metric potentials and (ii) an equation of state which represents disordered radiation in five dimensional universe. The solution obtained describes five dimensional radiating model in Brans-Dicke theory. Some physical and kinematical properties of the model are also discussed.

The principle of coherent Dicke narrowing in a thin vapor cell, in which sub-Doppler spectral line shapes are observed under a normal irradiation for a λ/2 thickness, is generalized to two-photon spectroscopy. Only the sum of the two wave vectors must be normal to the cell, making the two-photon scheme highly versatile. A comparison is provided between the Dicke narrowing with copropagating fields, and the residual Doppler broadening occurring with counterpropagating geometries. The experimental feasibility is discussed on the basis of a first observation of a two-photon resonance in a 300-nm-thick Cs cell. Extension to the Raman situation is finally considered.

We study the coherent cooperative phenomena of the system composed of two interacting atomic ensembles in the thermodynamic limit. Remarkably, the system exhibits the Dicke-like quantum phase transition and entanglement behavior although the governing Hamiltonian is fundamentally different from the spin-boson Dicke Hamiltonian, offering the opportunity for investigating collective matter-light dynamics with pure matter waves. The model can be realized with two Bose-Einstein condensates or atomic ensembles trapped in two optical cavities coupled to each other. The interaction between the two separate samples is induced by virtual photon exchange.

The post Newtonian parameter is considered in the chameleon-Brans-Dicke model. In the first step, the general form of this parameter and also effective gravitational constant is obtained. An arbitrary function for f({Phi}), which indicates the coupling between matter and scalar field, is introduced to investigate validity of solar system constraint. It is shown that the chameleon-Brans-Dicke model can satisfy the solar system constraint and gives us an {omega} parameter of order 10{sup 4}, which is in comparable to the constraint which has been indicated in [19].

We consider the application of group invariant transformations in order to constrain a flat isotropic and homogeneous cosmological model, containing a Brans-Dicke scalar field and a perfect fluid with a constant equation of state parameter w , where the latter is not interacting with the scalar field in the gravitational action integral. The requirement that the Wheeler-DeWitt equation be invariant under one-parameter point transformations provides us with two families of power-law potentials for the Brans-Dicke field, in which the powers are functions of the Brans-Dicke parameter ωBD and the parameter w . The existence of the Lie symmetry in the Wheeler-DeWitt equation is equivalent to the existence of a conserved quantity in field equations and with oscillatory terms in the wave function of the Universe. This enables us to solve the field equations. For a specific value of the conserved quantity, we find a closed-form solution for the Hubble factor, which is equivalent to a cosmological model in general relativity containing two perfect fluids. This provides us with different models for specific values of the parameters ωBD , and w . Finally, the results hold for the specific case where the Brans-Dicke parameter ωBD is zero, that is, for the O'Hanlon massive dilaton theory and, consequently, for f (R ) gravity in the metric formalism.

Andrew Sexton Gray was born in Limerick, Ireland, medically trained in Dublin, and was assistant to William Wilde, the distinguished oculist and aurist. He migrated to Victoria in 1859, was surgeon to a railway's construction company, then in 1862 began practice as a surgeon and oculist in Melbourne. In 1863 he founded a charitable eye and ear hospital, and had a very active, long life devoted mostly to ophthalmology. The hospital progressively expanded and became the centre for training for many ophthalmologists, as well as the nucleus for the cohesion of Victorian ophthalmology. We show that the motion of a laser-driven Bose-Einstein condensate in a high-finesse optical cavity realizes the spin-boson Dicke model. The quantum phase transition of the Dicke model from the normal to the superradiant phase corresponds to the self-organization of atoms from the homogeneous into a periodically patterned distribution above a critical driving strength. In this paper we investigate the chameleon effect in the different conformal frames of the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory. Given that, in the standard literature on the subject, the chameleon is described in the Einstein frame almost exclusively, here we pay special attention to the description of this effect in the Jordan and in the string frames. It is shown that, in general, terrestrial and solar system bounds on the mass of the BD scalar field, and bounds of cosmological origin, are difficult to reconcile at once through a single chameleon potential. We point out that, in a cosmological context, provided that the effective chameleon potential has a minimum within a region of constant density of matter, the Brans-Dicke theory transmutes into general relativity with a cosmological constant, in that region. This result, however, can be only locally valid.
From Casimir-Polder Force to Dicke Physics: Interaction between Atoms and a Topological Insulator

We apply the theory of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics in dispersing and absorbing media to study the Casimir-Polder force between an atom and a topological insulator. The electromagnetic response of a topological insulator surface leads to a mixing of electric and magnetic fields, breaking the time-reversal symmetry. The coupling of these fields to an atom causes shifts of the atom's eigenenergies and modified decay rates near the surface of the topological insulator. Energy shifts and modified decay rates cannot only be triggered by the presence of a material, but can be caused by other atoms in close proximity as well. The collective dynamics of atoms (Dicke Physics) leads to a superradiant burst. Combining macroscopic QED and Dicke physics opens the door to the investigation of cooperative atom-surface interactions.
Delocalized single-photon Dicke states and the Leggett-Garg inequality in solid state systems

We show how to realize a single-photon Dicke state in a large one-dimensional array of two-level systems, and discuss how to test its quantum properties. The realization of single-photon Dicke states relies on the cooperative nature of the interaction between a field reservoir and an array of two-level-emitters. The resulting dynamics of the delocalized state can display Rabi-like oscillations when the number of two-level emitters exceeds several hundred. In this case, the large array of emitters is essentially behaving like a “mirror-less cavity”. We outline how this might be realized using a multiple-quantum-well structure or a dc-SQUID array coupled to a transmission line, and discuss how the quantum nature of these oscillations could be tested with an extension of the Leggett-Garg inequality. We propose a method for generating all symmetric Dicke states, either in the long-lived internal levels of N massive particles or in the polarization degrees of freedom of photonic qubits, using linear optical tools only. By means of a suitable multiphoton detection technique, erasing Welcher-Weg information, our proposed scheme allows the generation and measurement of an important class of entangled multiqubit states.

While looking for a nice, easy to perform and cheap students' project in 2009, we investigated X-band (8 to 12 GHz) microwave devices. A 5 m parabolic dish antenna and an X-band down-converter were already available, but we had no antenna feed in our tool box. A web search yielded a simple feed horn design and found sketches and descriptions by Dick Turrin (W2IMU) from 1991.

In Brans-Dicke theory of gravity, from the nature of the scalar field-potential considered, the dark energy, dark matter, radiation densities predicted by different observations and the closedness of the universe considered, we can fix our ω BD , the Brans-Dicke parameter, keeping only the thing in mind that from different solar system constrains it must be greater than 5×105. Once we have a value, satisfying the required lower boundary, in our hand we proceed for setting unknown parameters of the different dark energy models' EoS parameter. In this paper we work with three well known red shift parametrizations of dark energy EoS. To constrain their free parameters for Brans Dicke theory of gravity we take twelve point red shift vs Hubble's parameter data and perform χ 2 test. We present the observational data analysis mechanism for Stern, Stern+BAO and Stern+BAO+CMB observations. Minimising χ 2, we obtain the best fit values and draw different confidence contours. We analyze the contours physically. Also we examine the best fit of distance modulus for our theoretical models and the Supernovae Type Ia Union2 sample. For Brans Dicke theory of gravity the difference from the mainstream confidence contouring method of data analysis id that the confidence contours evolved are not at all closed contours like a circle or a ellipse. Rather they are found to be open contours allowing the free parameters to float inside a infinite region of parameter space. However, negative EoSs are likely to evolve from the best fit values.
Stability analysis and observational measurement in chameleonic generalised Brans-Dicke cosmology

We investigate the dynamics of the chameleonic Generalised Brans-Dicke model in flat FRW cosmology. In a new approach, a framework to study stability and attractor solutions in the phase space for the model is developed by simultaneously best fitting the stability and model parameters with the observational data. The results show that for an accelerating universe the phantom crossing does not occur in the past and near future.

This paper explores hydrodynamics and hydrostatic of a star in the post-Newtonian approximation of massive Brans-Dicke gravity. We study approximated solutions of the field equations up to O(c^{-4}) and generalize Euler equations of motion. We then formulate equations governing the stability and instability of the system. Finally, we discuss spherically symmetric stars for a specific barotropic case like dust, cosmic string and domain wall in this scenario.
Cylindrically symmetric, static strings with a cosmological constant in Brans-Dicke theory

The static cylindrically symmetric vacuum solutions with a cosmological constant in the framework of the Brans-Dicke theory are investigated. Some of these solutions admitting Lorentz boost invariance along the symmetry axis correspond to local, straight cosmic strings with a cosmological constant. Some physical properties of such solutions are studied. These strings apply attractive or repulsive forces on the test particles. A smooth matching is also performed with a recently introduced interior thick string solution with a cosmological constant.

A step-by-step approach is followed to study cosmic structures in the context of Brans-Dicke theory with positive cosmological constant Λ and parameter ω. First, it is shown that regular stationary black-hole solutions not only have constant Brans-Dicke field ϕ, but can exist only for ω=∞, which forces the theory to coincide with the general relativity. Generalizations of the theory in order to evade this black-hole no-hair theorem are presented. It is also shown that in the absence of a stationary cosmological event horizon in the asymptotic region, a stationary black-hole horizon can support a nontrivial Brans-Dicke hair. Even more importantly, it is shown next that the presence of a stationary cosmological event horizon rules out any regular stationary solution, appropriate for the description of a star. Thus, to describe a star one has to assume that there is no such stationary horizon in the faraway asymptotic region. Under this implicit assumption generic spherical cosmic structures are studied perturbatively and it is shown that only for ω>0 or ω≲-5 their predicted maximum sizes are consistent with observations. Impact of an extreme event on the sediment budget: Hurricane Andrew in the Louisiana barrier islands

This paper examines the influence of Hurricane Andrew on the sediment budget of an 80-kilometer section of the Louisiana barrier islands west of the modern Mississippi delta. Because long-term bathymetric change has been extensively studied in this area, excellent baseline data are available for evaluating the impact of Hurricane Andrew. Results show that despite the high intensity of the storm and a storm track optimally positioned to impact the study area, the storm did not have an overwhelming influence on the sediment budget when compared to the changes occurring over the previous 50 years. For the Louisiana barrier islands, a 50-year record appears to be adequate for averaging the long-term contributions of both major and minor storm events to the sediment budget.

Thirteen years after Hurricane Andrew struck Homestead, FL, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Alabama, and southeastern Louisiana. Along with all its destruction, the term "catastrophic" was redefined. This article extends the literature on these hurricanes by providing a macrolevel analysis of The Governor's Disaster Planning and Response Review Committee Final Report from Hurricane Andrew and three federal after-action reports from Hurricane Katrina, as well as a cursory review of relevant literature. Results provide evidence that previous lessons have not been learned or institutionalized with many recommendations being repeated or modified. This article concludes with a discussion of these lessons, as well as new issues arising during Hurricane Katrina. PMID:24180096

This paper examines the relationship between two extraordinary artists, father and son--N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945) and Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009)--and their art. N.C. Wyeth, the father, the most famous illustrator of his day, painted scenes full of drama and action, often of men engaged in violent life and death struggles. N.C. was unable to separate from his powerful mother and yearned for his iconic father. He thought himself an artistic failure and dedicated himself to raising his children to be geniuses. The youngest son, Andrew Wyeth, who lived a "secret life," painted scenes often characterized by pathos: bleak and barren landscapes, leaden skies, tire tracks, gray framed houses, desiccated fields, and circling buzzards. In the father-son relationship, we often seen three themes perpetuated developmentally: (1) the son's identification with the innermost conflicts of his father; (2) the yearning for the iconic father of his youth; and (3) a continuation and disavowal of his father's life. It has been shown earlier that, for a perfect fluid, a perfect gas law of state, and the Robertson-Walker metric, an exponential phase in Brans-Dicke cosmology is possible, with both positive pressure and density, but not with the violated energy condition p = -ρ. We demonstrate in this paper that the inclusion of a cosmological constant into the theory does not change that picture. In this paper, we investigate two aspects of entanglement properties of the ground state for the Dicke model with the dipole-dipole interaction between the atoms in the thermodynamic limit, and observe how they are affected by the quantum phase transition. The appearance of dipole-dipole interactions between the atoms does not change the maximum atom-field entanglement at the critical point, while it changes the maximum atom-atom entanglement at the critical point, and has an important influence on the atom-atom entanglement behavior.

Five dimensional spherically symmetric space-time filled with two minimally interacting fields; matter and holographic dark energy components is investigated in a scalar tensor theory of gravitation proposed by Brans and Dicke (Phys. Rev. 124:925, 1961). To obtain a determinate solution of the highly non-linear field equations we have used (i) a relation between metric potentials and (ii) an equation of state which represents disordered radiation in five dimensional universe. The solution obtained represents a minimally interacting and radiating holographic dark energy model in five dimensional universe. Some physical and Kinematical properties of the model are, also, studied.
Instability analysis of a cylindrical stellar object in Brans-Dicke gravity

This paper investigates instability ranges of a cylindrically symmetric collapsing cosmic filamentary structure in the Brans-Dicke theory of gravity. For this purpose, we use a perturbating approach to the modified field equations as well as dynamic equations and construct a collapse equation. The collapse equation with an adiabatic index (Γ) is used to explore the instability ranges of both isotropic and anisotropic fluid in Newtonian and post-Newtonian approximations. It turns out that the instability ranges depend on the dynamic variables of collapsing filaments. We conclude that the system always remains unstable for 0 < Γ < 1, while Γ > 1 provides instability only in a special case.
Fisher information, Rényi entropy power and quantum phase transition in the Dicke model

Fisher information, Rényi entropy power and Fisher-Rényi information product are presented for the Dicke model. There is a quantum phase transition in this quantum optical model. It is pointed out that there is an abrupt change in the Fisher information, Rényi entropy power, the Fisher, Shannon and Rényi lengths at the transition point. It is found that these quantities diverge as the characteristic length: | around the critical value of the coupling strength λc for any value of the parameter β.
The entropy-corrected holographic dark energy in Brans-Dicke cosmology with varying mass fermions

We aim in this paper to study Brans-Dicke cosmology in the presence of varying mass fermions and a self-interaction potential. Furthermore, we also probe the entropy corrected holographic dark energy (ECHDE) in the model in two non-interacting and interacting scenarios. The model parameters are constrained by using the recent SNe Ia observational data and tested against observational data of Hubble parameter. For a comparison, we also constrained and tested the cosmological parameters in ΛCDM model with the same observational data. We show that in non of the scenarios the model prediction is better than ΛCDM model.
Entropy, chaos, and excited-state quantum phase transitions in the Dicke model.

We study nonequilibrium processes in an isolated quantum system-the Dicke model-focusing on the role played by the transition from integrability to chaos and the presence of excited-state quantum phase transitions. We show that both diagonal and entanglement entropies are abruptly increased by the onset of chaos. Also, this increase ends in both cases just after the system crosses the critical energy of the excited-state quantum phase transition. The link between entropy production, the development of chaos, and the excited-state quantum phase transition is more clear for the entanglement entropy. PMID:27575109

Transmission sub-Doppler spectroscopy with confined atomic vapor film between two dielectric walls is theoretically studied. Because of atoms flying from wall to wall, where they get de-excited, the atom-field interaction time is anisotropic so that the contribution of slow atoms is enhanced, a sub-Doppler transmission spectroscopy (Dicke narrowing effect) can be obtained when the thickness of the film is much small or comparable with the wavelength even at small angle oblique incidence. It is feasible to get a sub-Doppler structure in a new region (L < ?/4) in experiments.
Observation of a Superradiant Mott Insulator in the Dicke-Hubbard Model

It is well known that the bosonic Hubbard model possesses a Mott insulator phase. Likewise, it is known that the Dicke model exhibits a self-organized superradiant phase. By implementing an optical lattice inside of a high-finesse optical cavity, both models are merged such that an extended Hubbard model with cavity-mediated infinite range interactions arises. In addition to a normal superfluid phase, two superradiant phases are found, one of them coherent and hence superfluid and one incoherent Mott insulating.

In this work, we study the power-law and the logarithmic entropy corrected versions of the Ricci Dark Energy (RDE) model in the framework of the Brans-Dicke cosmology non-minimally coupled with a chameleon scalar field ϕ. Considering the presence of interaction between Dark Energy (DE) and Dark Matter (DM), we derived the expressions of some relevant cosmological parameters, i.e. the equation of state parameter ω D , the deceleration parameter q and the evolution of the energy density parameter \\varOmega'D.

This paper investigates the phenomenon of gravitational collapse of Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model in the presence of Brans-Dicke (BD) scalar field with nonzero potential field. We find a class of solutions by taking perfect fluid as well as scalar field and check the validity of weak energy conditions. It turns out that two different types of singularities are formed in the presence of scalar field. We conclude that the end state of gravitational collapse turns out to be a black hole (BH) contrary to general relativity (GR).

The description of homogeneous and isotropic models for the expansion of the Universe represented by a perfect, barotropic, fluid pose mathematical difficulties that have been overcome when the space is non-flat in scalar-tensor theories only if the energy-stress tensor is vacuous or describes stiff matter, incoherent radiation or ultrarelativistic matter. This paper reveals the dynamics for these and the other ideal fluid models, in non-flat spaces mainly, for the Jordan-Brans-Dicke cosmological theory by showing that its field equations, when written in terms of reduced variables, allow their straightforward partial integration.

Photon sources for multi-photon entanglement experiments are commonly based on the process of spontaneous parametric down conversion. Due to the probabilistic photon production, such experiments suffer from low multiphoton count rates. To increase this count rate, we present a novel SPDC pump source based on a femtosecond UV enhancement cavity that increases the available pump power while maintaining a high repetition rate of 80MHz. We apply the cavity as photon source for realizing symmetric, multi-partite entangled Dicke states, which are observed with a high rate and high fidelity. We characterize the observed Dicke states of up to six photons using efficient tools exploiting the state's symmetries.
Cosmological constraints on ghost dark energy in the Brans-Dicke theory by using MCMC approach

By using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate cosmological constraints on the ghost dark energy (GDE) model in the framework of the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory. A combination of the latest observational data of the cosmic microwave background radiation data from seven-year WMAP, the baryon acoustic oscillation data form the SDSS, the supernovae type Ia data from the Union2 and the X-ray gas mass fraction data from the Chandra X-ray observations of the largest relaxed galaxy clusters are used to perform constraints on GDE in the BD cosmology. In this paper, we consider both flat and non-flat universes together with interaction between dark matter and dark energy. The main cosmological parameters are obtained as: Ωbh2=0.0223-0.0013+0.0016, Ωch2=0.1149-0.0104+0.0088 and Ωk=0.0005-0.0073+0.0025. In addition, the Brans-Dicke parameter ω is estimated as 1/ω≃0.002.
Phase transition of charged Black Holes in Brans-Dicke theory through geometrical thermodynamics

In this paper, we take into account black hole solutions of Brans-Dicke-Maxwell theory and investigate their stability and phase transition points. We apply the concept of geometry in thermodynamics to obtain phase transition points and compare its results with those, calculated in the canonical ensemble through heat capacity. We show that these black holes enjoy second order phase transitions. We also show that there is a lower bound for the horizon radius of physical charged black holes in Brans-Dicke theory, which originates from restrictions of positivity of temperature. In addition, we find that employing a specific thermodynamical metric in the context of geometrical thermodynamics yields divergencies for the thermodynamical Ricci scalar in places of the phase transitions. It will be pointed out that due to the characteristic behavior of the thermodynamical Ricci scalar around its divergence points, one is able to distinguish the physical limitation point from the phase transitions. In addition, the free energy of these black holes will be obtained and its behavior will be investigated. It will be shown that the behavior of the free energy in the place where the heat capacity diverges demonstrates second order phase transition characteristics.
Bianchi type I Universe and instability of new agegraphic dark energy in Brans-Dicke theories

In this paper, we consider the new agegraphic dark energy (NADE) in a Bianchi type-I metric (which is a spatially homogeneous and anisotropic) in the framework of Brans-Dicke theory. For this purpose, we use the squared sound speed vs2 whose sign determines the stability of the model. We explore the stability of this model in the presence/absence of interaction between dark energy and dark matter in both flat and non-isotropic geometry. The equation of state and the deceleration parameter of the new agegraphic dark energy in a anisotropic Universe is obtained. We show that the combination of Brans-Dicke field and new agegraphic dark energy can accommodate ω_{\\varLambda}=-1 crossing for the equation of state of noninteracting dark energy. When an interaction between dark energy and dark matter is taken into account, the transition of ω_{\\varLambda} to phantom regime can be more easily accounted when the Einstein field equations is being resort. In conclusion, we find evidences that the new agegraphic dark energy in BD theory can not lead to a stable Universe favored by observations at the present time. The anisotropy of the Universe decreases and the Universe transits to an isotropic flat FRW Universe accommodating the present acceleration.
Stellar explosion in the weak field approximation of the Brans Dicke theory

We treat a very crude model of an exploding star, in the weak field approximation of the Brans Dicke theory, in a scenario that resembles some characteristic data of a type Ia supernova. The most noticeable feature, in the electromagnetic component, is the relationship between the absolute magnitude at maximum brightness of the star and the decline rate in one magnitude from that maximum. This characteristic has become one of the most accurate methods to measure luminosity distances to objects at cosmological distances (Phillips M M 1993 Astrophys. J. 413 L105; see www.all-science-fair-projects.com/science_fair_projects_encyclopedia/Supernova, for a brief description of supernovae types). An interesting result is that the active mass associated with the scalar field is totally radiated to infinity, representing a mass loss in the ratio of the 'tensor' component to the scalar component of 1 to (2ω + 3) (ω is the Brans Dicke parameter), in agreement with a general result of Hawking (1972 Commun. Math. Phys. 25 167). Then, this model shows explicitly, in a dynamical case, the mechanism of the radiation of a scalar field, which is necessary to understand the Hawking result.
Holographic dark energy in Brans-Dicke theory with logarithmic correction

In the derivation of holographic dark energy density, the area law of the black hole entropy plays a crucial role. However, the entropy-area relation can be modified from the inclusion of quantum effects, motivated from the loop quantum gravity, string theory and black hole physics. In this paper, we study cosmological implication of the interacting entropy-corrected holographic dark energy model in the framework of Brans-Dicke cosmology. We obtain the equation of state and the deceleration parameters of the entropy-corrected holographic dark energy in a non-flat Universe. As system's IR cutoff we choose the radius of the event horizon measured on the sphere of the horizon, defined as L = ar( t). We find out that when the entropy-corrected holographic dark energy is combined with the Brans-Dicke field, the transition from normal state where w D > -1 to the phantom regime where w D < -1 for the equation of state of interacting dark energy can be more easily achieved for than when resort to the Einstein field equations is made.
Brans-Dicke inflation in light of the Planck 2015 data

We study inflation in the Brans-Dicke gravity as a special model of the scalar-tensor gravity. We obtain the inflationary observables containing the scalar spectral index, the tensor-to-scalar ratio, the running of the scalar spectral index and the equilateral non-Gaussianity parameter in terms of the general form of the potential in the Jordan frame. Then, we compare the results for various inflationary potentials in light of the Planck 2015 data. Our study shows that in the Brans-Dicke gravity, the power-law, inverse power-law and exponential potentials are ruled out by the Planck 2015 data. But, the hilltop, Higgs, Coleman-Weinberg and natural potentials can be compatible with Planck 2015 TT,TE,EE+lowP data at 95% CL. Moreover, the D-brane, SB SUSY and displaced quadratic potentials can be in well agreement with the observational data since their results can lie inside the 68% CL region of Planck 2015 TT,TE,EE+lowP data.
Interacting new agegraphic dark energy in nonflat Brans-Dicke cosmology

We construct a cosmological model of late acceleration based on the new agegraphic dark energy model in the framework of Brans-Dicke cosmology where the new agegraphic energy density {rho}{sub D}=3n{sup 2}m{sub p}{sup 2}/{eta}{sup 2} is replaced with {rho}{sub D}=3n{sup 2{phi}2}/(4{omega}{eta}{sup 2}). We show that the combination of the Brans-Dicke field and agegraphic dark energy can accommodate a w{sub D}=-1 crossing for the equation of state of noninteracting dark energy. When an interaction between dark energy and dark matter is taken into account, the transition of w{sub D} to the phantom regime can be more easily accounted for than when we resort to the Einstein field equations. In the limiting case {alpha}=0 ({omega}{yields}{infinity}), all previous results of the new agegraphic dark energy in Einstein gravity are restored.

In this commentary paper, I will first defend a recent pragmatic scientific realism called as "entity realism" or "referential realism" which affirms that we are able to reach the real world not by inference but by technological, engineering settings. The motive of this work is to study gravitational collapse in Husain space-time in Brans-Dicke gravity theory. Among many scalar-tensor theories of gravity, Brans-Dicke is the simplest and the impact of it can be regulated by two parameters associated with it, namely, the Brans-Dicke parameter, ω, and the potential-scalar field dependency parameter n respectively. V. Husain's work on exact solution for null fluid collapse in 1996 has influenced many authors to follow his way to find the end-state of the homogeneous/inhomogeneous dust cloud. Vaidya's metric is used all over to follow the nature of future outgoing radial null geodesics. Detecting whether the central singularity is naked or wrapped by an event horizon, by the existence of future directed radial null geodesic emitted in past from the singularity is the basic objective. To point out the existence of positive trajectory tangent solution, both particular parametric cases (through tabular forms) and wide range contouring process have been applied. Precisely, perfect fluid's EoS satisfies a wide range of phenomena: from dust to exotic fluid like dark energy. We have used the EoS parameter k to determine the end state of collapse in different cosmological era. Our main target is to check low ω (more deviations from Einstein gravity-more Brans Dicke effect) and negative k zones. This particularly throws light on the nature of the end-state of collapse in accelerated expansion in Brans Dicke gravity. It is seen that for positive values of EoS parameter k, the collapse results in a black hole, whereas for negative values of k, naked singularity is the only outcome. It is also to be noted that "low ω" leads to the possibility of getting more naked singularities even for a non-accelerating universe.

Delayed tree mortality in the Atchafalaya Basin of Southern Louisiana following Hurricane Andrew

Hurricanes can damage trees in forested wetlands, and the potential for mortality related to these storms exists due to the effects of tree damage over time. In August 1992, Hurricane Andrew passed through the forested wetlands of southern Louisiana with winds in excess of 225 kph. Although more than 78 of the basal area was destroyed in some areas, most trees greater than 2.5 cm dbh were alive and resprouting prolifically the following year (98.8). Survival of most tree species was similarly high two years after the hurricane, but mortality rates of some species increased dramatically. For example, Populus heterophylla (swamp cottonwood) mortality increased from 7.8 to 59.2 (n 76) and Salix interior (sandbar willow) mortality increased from 4.5 to 57.1 (n 21). Stem sprouts on many up-rooted hardwood trees of other species were still alive in 1998, 6 years after the hurricane. Due to the understory tree species composition, regeneration, and high levels of resprouting, there was little change in species composition or perhaps a slight shift toward more shade and flood tolerant species six years following the hurricane event. Triadica sebifera (Chinese tallow) was found on some of the sites heavily disturbed by Hurricane Andrew, and may proliferate at the expense of native tree species. ?? 2009 The Society of Wetland Scientists.

This paper uses a short 'Christmas fairy-story for oncologists' sent by Christopher Andrewes with a 1935 letter to Peyton Rous as the centrepiece of a reflection on the state of knowledge and speculation about the viral aetiology of cancer in the 1930s. Although explicitly not intended for public circulation at the time, the fairy-story merits publication for its significance in the history of ideas about viruses, which are taken for granted today. Andrewes and Rous were prominent members of the international medical research community and yet faced strong resistance to their theory that viruses could cause such tumours as chicken sarcomas and rabbit papillomas. By looking at exchanges between these men among themselves and other proponents of their theories and with their oncologist detractors, we highlight an episode in the behind-the-scenes workings of medical science and show how informal correspondence helped keep alive a vital but then heterodox idea about the role of viruses in causing cancer. Ecological evaluation of proposed dredged material from St. Andrew Bay, Florida

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Mobile District, requested that the Battelle/Marine Sciences Laboratory (MSL) conduct field sampling and chemical and biological testing to determine the suitability of potential dredged material for open ocean disposal. Sediment from St. Andrew Bay was chemically characterized and evaluated for biological toxicity and bioaccumulation of contaminants. The Tier III guidance for ocean disposal testing requires tests of water column effects (following dredged material disposal), deposited sediment toxicity, and bioaccumulation of contaminants from deposited sediment (dredged material). To meet these requirements, the MSL conducted suspended-particulate-phase (SPP) toxicity tests, solid-phase toxicity tests, and bioaccumulation testing on sediment representing potential dredged material from Panama City Harbor. Physical and chemical characterization of sediment to support toxicity and bioaccumulation results was also conducted on both the test and reference sediments. The MSL collected sediment samples from five sites in St. Andrew Bay and one reference site near Lands End Peninsula. The five test sediments and the reference sediment were analyzed for physical and chemical sediment characteristics, SPP chemical contaminants, solid-phase toxicity, SPP toxicity, and bioaccumulation of contaminants.

James Gregory, inventor of the reflecting telescope and Fellow of the Royal Society, was the first Regius Professor of Mathematics of the University of St Andrews, 1668–74. He attempted to establish in St Andrews what would, if completed, have been the first purpose-built observatory in the British Isles. He travelled to London in 1673 to purchase instruments for equipping the observatory and improving the teaching and study of natural philosophy and mathematics in the university, seeking the advice of John Flamsteed, later the first Astronomer Royal. This paper considers the observatory initiative and the early acquisition of instruments at the University of St Andrews, with reference to Gregory's correspondence, inventories made ca. 1699–ca. 1718 and extant instruments themselves, some of which predate Gregory's time. It examines the structure and fate of the university observatory, the legacy of Gregory's teaching and endeavours, and the meridian line laid down in 1748 in the University Library.

The inhibition of Interleukin-1beta (IL-1β) is of substantial interest for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Using an in vitro assay with RAW 264.7 cells, oxo-acetic acid 2-ethoxy-4-(3-hydroxy-2-oxopropyl) phenyl ester (1) was isolated from the roots of Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews as an inhibitor of IL-1β with an IC(50) value of 56 μM. Compound 1 is a novel phenylesteric compound from P. suffruticosa Andrews. Compound 1 was shown to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in RAW 264.7 cells. Thus, a possible new action of novel compound is provided explaining the anti-rheumatoid arthritic properties of P. suffruticosa Andrews. PMID:22644848
Non-existence of Brans-Dicke theory in higher dimensional FRW universe

In this paper, we have studied exact solutions of Brans-Dicke (BD) theory for higher dimensional generalized Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe in the presence of strange quark matter (SQM) attached to the string cloud and domain walls. We have obtained that string tension density does not survive in this model. This result agrees with Kiran and Reddy, Krori et al., Sahoo and Mishra and Reddy. Also we have obtained constant scalar field in the presence of string cloud and domain walls. Then BD theory does not observe for higher dimensional FRW universe with SQM attached to the string cloud and domain walls. Our BD solutions turn into general relativity (GR). Finally, some physical properties are discussed.
Parametric fluorescence in a sequence of resonators: An analogy with Dicke superradiance

We investigate spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in a single-channel side-coupled integrated spaced sequence of resonators (SCISSOR). Analytic expressions for the number of photon pairs generated, as well as the biphoton wave function (joint spectral amplitude) describing the pairs, are derived and numerically computed for different pump pulse durations and numbers of ring resonators. In the limit of a long input pump pulse, we show a strong analogy between super-linear scaling of generation efficiency with respect to the number of rings in the structure and Dicke superradiance. More generally, we discuss in detail the factors that influence the shape of the biphoton wave function, as well as the conditions for observing super-SFWM.
Speed-dependent effects and Dicke narrowing in nitrogen-broadened oxygen

We present the line-shape analysis of the nitrogen-broadened P9 P9 oxygen B-band transition measured by the optical frequency comb-assisted Pound-Drever-Hall-locked frequency-stabilized cavity ring-down spectrometer. Perturbation by both oxygen and nitrogen molecules is taken into account simultaneously in the line-shape analysis. Several line-shape models describing physical effects such as Dicke narrowing, the speed dependence of collisional broadening and shifting, and the correlation between velocity- and phase-changing collisions were used in the analysis. The comparison between the hypergeometric and quadratic approximations of the speed-dependent effects is presented. Observed line narrowing is mostly determined by the speed dependence of the collisional broadening.
On holographic dark energy in non-isotropic Universe with Brans-Dicke theory

A spatially homogeneous and anisotropic Bianchi type I Universe has been studied with the interacting holographic dark energy (HDE) in the framework of Brans-Dicke theory. At first, we obtain the equation of state parameter, the deceleration parameter and the evolution equation of the interacting HDE in BD theory. We find that, in this case, ω_{Λ} can cross the phantom line (ω_{Λ}>-1) and eventually the Universe approaches a de-Sitter phase of expansion (ω_{Λ}→-1). Then, we extend our study to the case of stability of the interacting HDE in BI Universe according to BD theory. In case of we find that the squared sound speed of the interacting HDE is either positive or negative. This implies that the interacting HDE in BD theory can lead to a stable Universe favored by observations at the present time in an anisotropic Universe.

We construct a class of charged rotating solutions in (n+1)-dimensional Maxwell-Brans-Dicke theory with flat horizon in the presence of a quadratic potential and investigate their properties. These solutions are neither asymptotically flat nor (anti)-de Sitter. We find that these solutions can present black brane, with inner and outer event horizons, an extreme black brane or a naked singularity provided the parameters of the solutions are chosen suitably. We compute the finite Euclidean action through the use of counterterm method, and obtain the conserved and thermodynamic quantities by using the relation between the action and free energy in grand-canonical ensemble. We find that these quantities satisfy the first law of thermodynamics, and the entropy does not follow the area law.

In this paper, we study the evolution of the dark energy parameter in the spatially homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) model filled with barotropic fluid and dark energy in the scalar-tensor theory of gravitation proposed by Brans and Dicke (Phys. Rev. 24:925, 1961). A determinate solution is presented using (i) the special law of variation for Hubble's parameter proposed by Berman (Nuovo Cimento B 74:183, 1983) and (ii) trace free energy momentum tensor of the two fluid. Two cases of interacting and non-interacting fluid (barotropic and dark energy) scenario is considered and general results are obtained. The physical aspects of the results obtained are, also, discussed.
Power-Law Entropy-Corrected HDE and NADE in Brans-Dicke Cosmology

Considering the power-law corrections to the black hole entropy, which appear in dealing with the entanglement of quantum fields inside and outside the horizon, the holographic energy density is modified accordingly. In this paper we study the power-law entropy-corrected holographic dark energy in the framework of Brans-Dicke theory. We investigate the cosmological implications of this model in detail. We also perform the study for the new agegraphic dark energy model and calculate some relevant cosmological parameters and their evolution. As a result we find that this model can provide the present cosmic acceleration and even the equation of state parameter of this model can cross the phantom line w D =-1 provided the model parameters are chosen suitably.
Interacting Ricci Logarithmic Entropy-Corrected Holographic Dark Energy in Brans-Dicke Cosmology

In the derivation of Holographic Dark Energy (HDE), the area law of the black hole entropy assumes a crucial role. However, the entropy-area relation can be modified including some quantum effects, motivated from the Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG), string theory and black hole physics. In this paper, we study the cosmological implications of the interacting logarithmic entropy-corrected HDE (LECHDE) model in the framework of Brans-Dicke (BD) cosmology. As system’s infrared (IR) cut-off, we choose the average radius of Ricci scalar curvature, i.e. R -1/2. We obtain the Equation of State (EoS) parameter ω D , the deceleration parameter q and the evolution of energy density parameter of our model in a non-flat universe. Moreover, we study the limiting cases corresponding to our model without corrections and to the Einstein’s gravity.
From Floquet to Dicke: Quantum Spin Hall Insulator Interacting with Quantum Light.

Time-periodic perturbations due to classical electromagnetic fields are useful to engineer the topological properties of matter using the Floquet theory. Here we investigate the effect of quantized electromagnetic fields by focusing on the quantized light-matter interaction on the edge state of a quantum spin Hall insulator. A Dicke-type superradiant phase transition occurs at arbitrary weak coupling, the electronic spectrum acquires a finite gap, and the resulting ground-state manifold is topological with a Chern number of ±1. When the total number of excitations is conserved, a photocurrent is generated along the edge, being pseudoquantized as ωln(1/ω) in the low-frequency limit and decaying as 1/ω for high frequencies with ω the photon frequency. The photon spectral function exhibits a clean Goldstone mode, a Higgs-like collective mode at the optical gap and the polariton continuum. PMID:26550853
Particle collisions near a Kerr-like black hole in Brans-Dicke theory

A recent discovery in 2009 by Bañados, Silk and West (BSW), which generated a lot of interest, involves the arbitrary high center-of-mass (c.m.) energies for free particle collisions at the horizon of an extreme kerr black hole when one of the free particles has a critical value of the angular momentum. In light of this we consider the rotating Kerr-like black hole solution in Brans-Dicke theory and study the motion of scalar test charges in the vicinity of the black hole horizon. We show that the interaction of the test scalar charges with the background scalar field in this spacetime suppresses the c.m. energy for collisions occurring near the event horizon, and the value of the c.m. energy there, is finite irrespective of whether the black hole is extreme or not and its value is also independent of the angular momenta of the colliding test charges.
Entanglement dynamics of the ultrastrong-coupling three-qubit Dicke model

We give an analytical description of the dynamics of the three-qubit Dicke model using the adiabatic approximation in the parameter regime where the qubit transition frequencies are far off-resonance with the field frequency and the interaction strengths reach the ultrastrong-coupling regimes. Qualitative differences arise upon comparison to single- and two-qubit systems. Simple analytic formulas show that three revival sequences produce a three-frequency beat note in the time evolution of the population. We find an explicit way to estimate the dynamics for qubit-field and qubit-qubit entanglement inside the three-qubit system in the ultrastrong-coupling regime, and the resistance to sudden death proves that the entanglement in the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state is more robust than that in the W state.
Modified Brans–Dicke cosmology with matter-scalar field interaction

We discuss the cosmological implications of an extended Brans–Dicke theory presented recently, in which there is an energy exchange between the scalar field and ordinary matter, determined by the theory. A new mass scale is generated in the theory which modifies the Friedmann equations with field-dependent corrected kinetic terms. In a radiation Universe the general solutions are found and there are branches with complete removal of the initial singularity, while at the same time a transient accelerating period can occur within deceleration. Entropy production is also possible in the early Universe. In the dust era, late-times acceleration has been found numerically in agreement with the correct behavior of the density parameters and the dark energy equation of state, while the gravitational constant has only a slight variation over a large redshift interval in agreement with observational bounds.
Cosmic microwave background with Brans-Dicke gravity. II. Constraints with the WMAP and SDSS data

Using the covariant formalism developed in a companion paper [F.-Q. Wu, L. E. Qiang, X. Wang, and X. Chen, preceding Article, Phys. Rev. DPRVDAQ1550-7998 82, 083002 (2010)] (paper I), we derive observational constraints on the Brans-Dicke model in a flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe with a cosmological constant and cold dark matter. The CMB observations we use include the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 5 yr data, the Arcminute Cosmology Bolometer Array Receiver 2007 data, the Cosmic Background Imager polarization data, and the Balloon Observations of Millimetric Extragalactic Radiation and Geophysics 2003 flight data. For the large scale structure we use the matter power spectrum data measured with the luminous red galaxy survey of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4. We parametrize the Brans-Dicke parameter ω with a new parameter ζ=ln(1/ω+1), and use the Markov-Chain Monte Carlo method to explore the parameter space. We find that using CMB data alone, one could place some constraints on positive ζ or ω, but negative ζ or ω could not be constrained effectively. However, with additional large scale structure data, one could break the degeneracy at ζ<0. The 2σ (95.5%) bound on ζ is -0.00837<ζ<0.01018 (corresponding to ω<-120.0 or ω>97.8). We also obtained constraints on G˙/G, the rate of change of G at present, as -1.75×10-12yr-1

Prosthetic dentistry involves the replacement of missing and contiguous tissues with artificial substitutes to restore and maintain the oral functions, appearance, and health of the patient. The treatment of edentulous areas with ridge defects poses a challenging task for the dentist. Management of such cases involves a wide range of treatment options comprising mainly of surgical interventions and non surgical techniques such as use of removable, fixed or fixed- removable partial dentures. But each treatment plan undertaken should be customized according to patient needs. A variety of factors such as quality and quantity of existing contiguous hard and soft tissues, systemic condition and economic status of the patient play an important role in treatment planning, clinical outcome and prognosis. Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia Andrews (syn. V. fragrans Salisb.), a native of Central America, is the primary source of natural vanillin and plays a major role in the global economy. The gene pool of vanilla is threatened by deforestation and overcollection that has resulted in disappearance of natural habitats and wild species. Continuous vegetative propagation and lack of natural seed set and sufficient variations in the gene pool hamper crop improvement programs. In vitro techniques, one of the key tools of plant biotechnology, can be employed for overcoming specific problems, viz. production of disease-free clones, inducing somaclonal variations, developing hybrids, gene pool conservation, incorporating desired traits by distant hybridization, genetic engineering, etc. However, realization of these objectives necessitates standardization of protocols. The post-disaster negative health legacy: pregnancy outcomes in Louisiana after Hurricane Andrew.

Disasters and displacement increasingly affect and challenge urban settings. How do pregnant women fare in the aftermath of a major disaster? This paper investigates the effect of pregnancies in disaster situations. The study tests a hypothesis that pregnant women residing in hurricane-prone areas suffer higher health risks. The setting is Louisiana in the Gulf Coast, United States, a state that continually experiences hurricane impacts. The time period for the analysis is three years following the landfall of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. We analysed low birth weight and preterm deliveries before and after landfall, as a whole and by race. Findings support an association between hazards and health of a community and indicate that pregnant women in the affected area, irrespective of race, are more likely to experience preterm deliveries compared to pre-event births. Results suggest there is a negative health legacy impact in Louisiana as a result of hurricane landfall. PMID:25754615

On August 24, 1992, Hurricane Andrew struck southern Florida. More than 28,000 houses, mobile homes, and apartment buildings were destroyed, and approximately 107,000 additional dwellings sustained major damage. An estimated 180,000 persons were left homeless; insured damages were estimated at $15.5 billion and total damages at more than $30 billion. During the recovery period, many private and public health-care facilities damaged or destroyed in the storm were not functional. During November 3-13, to help prioritize health needs and direct public health resources, the Dade County Public Health Unit of the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services conducted a survey to assess health needs and the availability of health-care services during the recovery phase with funds provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The occurrence of a number of large-scale disasters or catastrophes in recent years, including the Indian Ocean tsunami (2004), the Kashmir earthquake (2005), Hurricane Katrina (2005) and Hurricane Ike (2008), have raised our awareness regarding the devastating effects of disasters on human populations and the importance of developing mitigation and preparedness strategies to limit the consequences of such events. However, there is still a dearth of social science research focusing on the socio-economic impact of disasters on businesses in the United States. This paper contributes to this research literature by focusing on the impact of disasters on business closure and relocation through the use of multivariate logistic regression models, specifically focusing on the Loma Prieta earthquake (1989) and Hurricane Andrew (1992). Using a multivariate model, we examine how physical damage to the infrastructure, lifeline disruption and business characteristics, among others, impact business closure and relocation following major disasters. On studying some new models of Robertson-Walker universes with a Brans-Dicke scalar field, it is found that most of these universes contain a dark energy like fluid which confirms the present scenario of the expansion of the universe. In one of the cases, the exact solution of the field equations gives a universe with a false vacuum, while in another it reduces to that of dust distribution in the Brans-Dicke cosmology when the cosmological constant is not in the picture. In one particular model it is found that the universe may undergo a Big Rip in the future, and thus it will be very interesting to investigate such models further.
Extended phase space thermodynamics and P-V criticality of charged black holes in Brans-Dicke theory

Motivated by conformal relation between dilaton gravity and Brans-Dicke theory, in this paper, we are taking into account extended phase space thermodynamics to investigate phase transition of charged black holes. We regard spherically symmetric charged black hole solutions in the presence of a scalar field in both Einstein and Jordan frames and calculate related conserved and thermodynamic quantities. Then, we study the analogy of the black hole solution with the Van der Waals liquid-gas system in the extended phase space by considering the cosmological constant proportional to thermodynamical pressure. We obtain critical values of thermodynamic coordinates and plot P-V and G-T diagrams to study the phase transition points and compare the results of dilaton gravity and Brans-Dicke theory.
On the Non- k-Separability of Dicke Class of States and N-Qudit W States

In this paper, we present the separability criteria to identify non- k-separability and genuine multipartite entanglement in mixed multipartite states using elements of density matrices. Our criteria can detect the non- k-separability of Dicke class of states, anti W states and mixtures thereof and higher dimensional W class of states. We then investigate the performance of our criteria by considering N-qubit Dicke states with arbitrary excitations added with white noise and mixture of N-qudit W state with white noise. We also study the robustness of our criteria against white noise. Further, we demonstrate that our criteria are experimentally implementable by means of local observables such as Pauli matrices and generalized Gell-Mann matrices.
Dynamical many-body phases of the parametrically driven, dissipative Dicke model

Control and manipulation of quantum engineered systems allows for the utilization of time-dependent parametric modulations for accessing novel out-of-equilibrium phenomena. In the absence of such driving, the dissipative Dicke model exhibits a fascinating out-of-equilibrium many-body phase transition as a function of a coupling between a driven photonic cavity and numerous two-level atoms. We study the effect of a parametric modulation of this coupling and discover a rich phase diagram as a function of the modulation strength. We find that in addition to the established normal and super-radiant phases, a new phase with pulsed superradiance, which we term dynamical normal phase, appears when the system is parametrically driven. Employing different methods, we characterize the different phases and the transitions between them. Specific heed is paid to the role of dissipation in determining the phase boundaries. Our analysis paves the road for the experimental study of dynamically stabilized phases of interacting light and matter.
Reversible and irreversible spacetime thermodynamics for general Brans-Dicke theories

We derive the equations of motion for Palatini F(R) gravity by applying an entropy balance law TdS={delta}Q+{delta}N to the local Rindler wedge that can be constructed at each point of spacetime. Unlike previous results for metric F(R), there is no bulk viscosity term in the irreversible flux {delta}N. Both theories are equivalent to particular cases of Brans-Dicke scalar-tensor gravity. We show that the thermodynamical approach can be used ab initio also for this class of gravitational theories and it is able to provide both the metric and scalar equations of motion. In this case, the presence of an additional scalar degree of freedom and the requirement for it to be dynamical naturally imply a separate contribution from the scalar field to the heat flux {delta}Q. Therefore, the gravitational flux previously associated to a bulk viscosity term in metric F(R) turns out to be actually part of the reversible thermodynamics. Hence we conjecture that only the shear viscosity associated with Hartle-Hawking dissipation should be associated with irreversible thermodynamics.
Expanding (n+1)-dimensional wormhole solutions in Brans-Dicke cosmology

We have obtained two classes of (n+1)-dimensional wormhole solutions using a traceless energy-momentum tensor in the Brans-Dicke theory of gravity. The first class contains wormhole solutions in an open geometry, while the second contains wormhole solutions in both open and closed universes. In addition to wormhole geometries, naked singularities and maximally symmetric space-time also appear among the solutions as special cases. We have also considered the traversability of the wormhole solutions and have shown that they are indeed traversable. Finally, we have discussed the energy-momentum tensor which supports this geometry and have checked for the energy conditions. We have found that wormhole solutions in the first class of solutions violate the weak energy condition (WEC). In the second class, the wormhole geometries in a closed universe do violate the WEC, but in an open universe with a suitable choice of constants the supporting matter energy-momentum tensor can satisfy the WEC. However, even in this case the full effective energy-momentum tensor including the scalar field and the matter energy-momentum tensor still violates the WEC.

The William Dick Lagoon site consists of three unlined lagoons (approximately 2.5 acres total area) which previously contained over four million gallons of rinse water from cleaning chemical tank trailers. In 1970, two of the lagoons breached and released approximately 300,000 gallons of wastewater into the nearby area and a small tributary. Trichloroethylene, toluene, 4,4-DDE, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons have been reported in the soil on the site. Trichloroethylene was detected in a nearby spring, previously used as a water source by a small number of residents. Potential human exposure pathways include ingestion of contaminated water, dermal exposure to contaminated water and soil, and inhalation of contaminated dust and organics in the contaminated groundwater. The site is considered to be of potential public health concern because of the risk to human health caused by the possibility of exposure to hazardous substances. However, it does not appear that a human population is currently exposed to site contaminants at levels of health concern.
