    Mechanical property investigations of Alloy 718 given either the 954/sup 0/C conventional or the INEL heat treatment are continuing. Current conventional heat-treat data include tests showing the effects of surface finish, product variability, and thermal exposure on the high-cycle fatigue properties; creep-fatigue tests at 538, 593, 649, and 704/sup 0/C with 0.1 hour hold times at peak strain; and stress-rupture tests of notched and smooth specimens showing the effect of pretest thermal exposure. A few stress-rupture tests of weld and base metals given the INEL heat treatment are also reported. High-cycle fatigue tests of Type 316 stainless steel at 593/sup 0/C are reported and compared with previous data from other sources.

    During this report period, irradiation (photo-oxidation) of all six vitrain concentrates for three different time periods (10, 50 and 100 min) using the BLAK-RAY ultraviolet lamp was completed along with film flotation and surface luminescence measurements for each condition. Flotation results from photo-oxidized powdered vitrains appear to be contrary to earlier results obtained from contact angle measurements on polished surfaces. Some of the more strongly photo-oxidized powders, particularly for hvAb and mvb coals, exhibit greater hydrophobicity. The changes in hydrophobicity as well as a measured decrease in surface luminescence with increasing irradiation time, clearly shows that UV irradiation has had an influence on surface properties. There is some possibility that increasing exposure to the UV source may cause mobilization of aliphatic compounds (oils) from the fresh fracture surfaces of vitrain. These compounds, once exuded onto the surface could act like a natural flotation collector that would both increase particle hydrophobicity and may obscure the surface from further oxidation. Because most aliphatic compounds do not luminesce, their presence on the surface would reduce measured luminescence. A second possible explanation is that the types of oxygen functional groups which form during UV irradiation may inhibit or promote hydrophobicity depending upon their concentration. In an attempt to resolve these issues several analytical tests will be undertaken. Pyrolysis GC/MS will be used to investigate whether photo-oxidation of bulk vitrains was sufficiently severe with increasing UV irradiation. Reflectance-mode FTIR will be used to measure changes in surface chemistry for some of the irradiated powdered vitrains.

    During this report period, two vitrinite concentrates were prepared and analyzed from the hvBb Ohio No. 4a and hvAb Lower Kittanning seams. Results show that concentrates of 97 and 96 vol% vitrinite were achieved for the respective samples. Both samples have relatively high concentrations of sulfate sulfur which is the only sign of deterioration. However, in the case of the Lower Kittanning sample the sulfate may have been part of the original sample. Irradiation (photo-oxidation) of all six vitrinite concentrates for three different time periods (10, 50 and 100 min) using a ultraviolet lamp was continued during this report period. Evaluation showed that these irradiation times provided a level of photo-oxidation that corresponded to the blue-light flux used in the optical microscope system for 1, 5 and 10 min irradiations, respectively. From evaluation of the surface luminescence of vitrain surfaces following exposure to UV light the authors have determined the intensity decreases with increasing irradiation time. Film flotation results, although incomplete, show that there is some variability in flotation yield as a function of rank and of photo-oxidation time. As observed from contact angle and FTIR spectral measurements on polished surfaces, the hvCb Illinois No. 6 powdered vitrain shows a significant loss in flotation yield with increasing irradiation time following 10 and 50 min of exposure to UV light. Also, a relative minor change in flotation yield was observed for the mvb Splash Dam vitrain powder after 10 and 50 min irradiation. The Splash Dam vitrain gave a slight increase in flotation yield suggesting that the surface became somewhat more hydrophobic. Results from the hvAb Lower Kittanning sample appear intermediate. A significant increase in flotation yield occurs after 10 min irradiation marked by a relatively large decrease after 50 min.

    Primary cutaneous Bacillus cereus infection frequently presents as a single necrotic bulla on the extremity of an immunocompromised patient. In lesional biopsy specimens and smears, the large gram-positive rods of B cereus may be mistaken for Clostridium species. This is a potentially serious error, as Bacillus species are resistant to penicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics. We studied a case in which large periodic acid-Schiff-staining organisms were seen in the biopsy specimen from a necrotic bulla on the finger of a neutropenic patient with diffuse large cell lymphoma. The tissue biopsy specimen subsequently yielded a pure culture of B cereus. Staining with periodic acid-Schiff was then performed on a series of bacterial species in human tissue and from smears of culture colonies. The following bacterial species were found to be consistently periodic acid-Schiff positive after diastase digestion: B cereus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Propionibacterium acnes, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Micrococcus luteus.     In this Letter, we report the pioneering use of free electron laser radiation for the investigation of periodic crystalline structures. The diffraction properties of silver behenate single nanocrystals (5.8 nm periodicity) with the dimensions of 20 nmx20 nmx20 {mu}m and as powder with grain sizes smaller than 200 nm were investigated with 8 nm free electron laser radiation in single-shot modus with 30 fs long free electron laser pulses. This work emphasizes the possibility of using soft x-ray free electron laser radiation for these crystallographic studies on a nanometer scale.

    The use of depressed collectors for the efficient collection of spent beams from linear-beam microwave tubes depends on a refocusing procedure in which the space charge forces and transverse velocity components are reduced. The refocusing properties are evaluated of permanent magnet configurations whose axial fields are approximated by constant plateaus or linearly varying fields. The results provide design criteria and show that the refocusing properties can be determined from the plateau fields alone.

    The Thermal Properties Measurement Report summarizes the research, development, installation, and initial use of significant experimental thermal property characterization capabilities at the INL in FY 2015. These new capabilities were used to characterize a U3Si2 (candidate Accident Tolerant) fuel sample fabricated at the INL. The ability to perform measurements at various length scales is important and provides additional data that is not currently in the literature. However, the real value of the data will be in accomplishing a phenomenological understanding of the thermal conductivity in fuels and the ties to predictive modeling. Thus, the MARMOT advanced modeling and simulation capability was utilized to illustrate how the microstructural data can be modeled and compared with bulk characterization data. A scientific method was established for thermal property measurement capability on irradiated nuclear fuel samples, which will be installed in the Irradiated Material Characterization Laboratory (IMCL).

    This research has focused on the attachment of bacteria to solid surfaces and the significance of their adhesion properties in their transport through porous media. Our work has focused on strains of Pseudomonas and a related species Burkholderia cepacia. Most of our experimental strains were isolated from subsurface environments at USDOE experimental field sites. The first portion of this project was conducted at the University of Maryland during 1994-1996, during which two graduates and one graduate student were supported by the award. The project was then continued under contract number DE-FG02-96ER62302 at the University of South Carolina, where one postdoctoral associate has been supported by the award.

    Lattice dynamics is of central importance for the mechanism of ferroelectricity. In particular, the soft mode behaviors are directly related to many of their ferroelectric and dielectric properties. In this project, we have carried out experimental studies of the vibrational spectra of SrTiO{sub 3} films grown by pulsed laser deposition using a metal-oxide bilayer structure. Raman scattering, with and without bias electric field, and Fourier-transform far-infrared ellipsometry were utilized. These results are compared with the low-frequency dielectric properties. We found that in the films the soft mode is harder compared to that in bulk crystals, in agreement with the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller (LST) formalism. We have studied electric field-induced Raman scattering in SrTiO{sub 3} thin films using an indium-tin oxide/SrTiO{sub 3}/SrRuO{sub 3} structure. The soft mode polarized along the field becomes Raman active. Experimental data for electric field-induced hardening of the soft modes and the tuning of the static dielectric constant are in agreement described by the LST formalism. The markedly different behavior of the soft modes in thin films from that in the bulk is explained by the existence of local polar regions. The study was extended to Ba{sub x}Sr{sub 1-x}TiO{sub 3} films with Ba contents x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.5. The temperature dependence of the soft mode frequency shows evidence of the ferroelectric phase transition in the films. Relative Raman intensity of hard phonon modes shows the ferroelectric phase transition occurs over a broad range of temperatures in thin films, which is different from bulk behavior. Comparison of temperature evolution of Raman spectra for films grown on SrTiO{sub 3} and LaAlO{sub 3} substrates shows the influence of strain on the temperature of ferroelectric phase transition.

    Investigations were continued into pottants, soil resistant coatings and low cost substrate materials. Two component aliphatic urethane casting syrups for use as solar module pottants were evaluated for suitability on the basis of optical, physical and fabrication characteristics. One formulation was selected as being acceptable for industrial evaluation. This urethane is characterized by high transparency, low mix viscosity, fast cure time and surprising lack of moisture sensitivity that has given trouble with previous urethane compositions. This material is produced with an ultraviolet stabilizer system already blended in. An experimental program was continued to determine the effectiveness of soil resistant coatings. These treatments have been applied to Sunadex glass, Tedlar and oriented acrylic film. The treatments are based on silicone, acrylic and fluorosilane chemistries. Test specimens are being exposed to outdoor soiling conditions with subsequent testing for short circuit-current loss using a standard cell device. After nine months of outdoor exposure, the most effective treatment appears to be a silane modified adduct of perfluorodecanoic acid. The degree of soiling also appears to correlate to the amount of rainfall that results in a natural cleaning of the surface. Wood products, such as hardboard, are potentially the lowest cost candidate substrates identified to date. The difficulty with the use of these materials lies in the very high hygroscopic expansion coefficients. Periods of dryout followed by subsequent moisture regain results in large expansions and contractions that result in cell fracture. Experiments were conducted to determine the effectiveness of occlusive coatings to prevent this effect. Both metal foils and organic films bonded to the hardboard with appropriate adhesives were found to dramatically decrease the hygroscopic response and lower the expansion coefficient by four orders of magnitude.

    During the past quarter technical investigations concerned the development of advanced cure chemistries for lamination type pottants, the continued evaluation of soil resistant surface treatments, and the results of an accelerated aging test program for the comparison of material stabilities. New compounds were evaluated for efficiency in curing both ethylene/vinyl acetate and ethylene/methyl acrylate pottants. One compound in particular, designated Lupersol - TBEC was found to be unusually effective in promoting the rapid cure of both these materials. Formulation of these resins with TBEC resulted in compositions of very high gel content, lower temperatures of activation, and much lower cure times, even in the ethylene/methyl acrylate polymer that is more difficult to cure. An experimental program continued to determine the effectiveness of soil resistant coatings. These treatments have been applied to Sunadex glass, Tedlar and oriented acrylic film. The treatments are based on silicone, acrylic, and fluorosilane chemistries. After one year of outdoor exposure, the most effective treatment of Sunadex glass appears to be a fluorosilane designated L-1668, and for both the organic films a silane modified adduct of perfluoric acid gave the best results. After one year of time there is evidence that the treatments are slowly being lost and consequently a maintenance schedule may be required to maintain effectiveness over long periods of time. An accelerated aging test program is underway for the dual purpose of generating practical and empirical data relating to the service life of candidate encapsulation materials, and to provide data that may be useful in a predictive type of analysis.

    Periodic paralysis is a rare disorder that causes episodes of severe muscle weakness that can be confused with other diseases, including epilepsy or myasthenia gravis. Hyperkalemic and hypokalemic paralysis are included within these diseases, the latter being divided into periodic paralysis (familial, thyrotoxic or sporadic) and non-periodic paralysis. In this regard, we present a case of familial hypokalemic periodic paralysis in an eighteen year-old female who was diagnosed with epilepsy in childhood, as well as a subclinical hypothyroidism (for which she received replacement therapy) months ago.     Microwave properties of ferromagnetic nanowire arrays patterned with periodic and quasi-periodic structures were investigated in this study. The periodic and quasi-periodic structures were designed based on Fibonacci sequence and golden ratio. Ni nanowires arrays were electrodeposited in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates with patterned Cu electrodes, and then the AAO templates were attached to the coplanar waveguide lines fabricated on quartz substrate for measurement. The S21 of both periodic and quasi-periodic structure-patterned Ni nanowire arrays showed an extra absorption peak besides the absorption peak due to the ferromagnetic resonance of Ni nanowires. The frequency of the absorption peak caused by the patterned structure could be higher than 40 GHz when the length and arrangement of the structural units were modified. In addition, the frequency of the absorption peak due to the quasi-periodic structure was calculated based on a simple analytical model, and the calculated value was consistent with the measured one. The experimental data showed that it could be a feasible approach to tune the performance of microwave devices by patterning ferromagnetic nanowires.

    A general method for homogenization of the electromagnetic properties of a heterogeneous periodic medium is developed, based on its microstructure. This method is inspired by micromechanics (Nemat-Nasser and Hori, 1999). Contrary to other conventional techniques, commonly used in electromagnetism to calculate the overall properties of composites, this microstructurally-based method does not require an explicit numerical solution of the Maxwell equations. We define the macroscopic field quantities as volume averages of the spatially variable fields, taken over a representative volume element (RVE), consisting of a unit cell of the periodic medium (Hill, 1963; Willis, 1981; Hashin, 1983; Nemat-Nasser, 1986). The boundary conditions are based on the Bloch representation of wave propagation in the heterogeneous media. Instead of explicitly solving the Maxwell equations, these equations are directly used in the averaging scheme. This distinguishes our method from others, where usually a known point-wise solution is used to obtain the average field quantities. The resulting constitutive relations therefore may be used to directly estimate the response of any heterogeneous periodic assembly of material constituents of given geometry and properties.     Brain histamine is involved in the regulation of the sleep-wake cycle and alertness. Despite the widespread use of the mouse as an experimental model, the periodic properties of major markers of the mouse histaminergic system have not been comprehensively characterized. We analysed the daily levels of histamine and its first metabolite, 1-methylhistamine, in different brain structures of C57BL/6J and CBA/J mouse strains, and the mRNA level and activity of histidine decarboxylase and histamine-N-methyltransferase in C57BL/6J mice. In the C57BL/6J strain, histamine release, assessed by in vivo microdialysis, underwent prominent periodic changes. The main period was 24 h peaking during the activity period. Additional 8 h periods were also observed. The release was highly positively correlated with active wakefulness, as shown by electroencephalography. In both mouse strains, tissue histamine levels remained steady for 24 h in all structures except for the hypothalamus of CBA/J mice, where 24-h periodicity was observed. Brain tissue 1-methylhistamine levels in both strains reached their maxima in the periods of activity. The mRNA level of histidine decarboxylase in the tuberomamillary nucleus and the activities of histidine decarboxylase and histamine-N-methyltransferase in the striatum and cortex did not show a 24-h rhythm, whereas in the hypothalamus the activities of both enzymes had a 12-h periodicity. These results show that the activities of histamine-metabolizing enzymes are not under simple direct circadian regulation. The complex and non-uniform temporal patterns of the histaminergic system of the mouse brain suggest that histamine is strongly involved in the maintenance of active wakefulness. PMID:24438489

    We study theoretically the electronic transport properties of zigzag silicene nanoribbon superlattices subject to a periodic electric field perpendicular to the surface of silicene. Our results show that the conductivity of the system depends on the superlattice structural parameters and show effects analogous to those found with two-dimensional semiconductor superlattices. For a superlattice with Nb barriers, a series of resonant peaks, each of which is split into (Nb - 1) subpeaks, and transmission blockade regions appear in the conductance spectrum, which indicates the formation of minibands and minigaps. These silicene-based quantum structures can provide concepts for the design nanodevices.

    Processing of biomolecular sequences using communication theory techniques provides powerful approaches for solving highly relevant problems in bioinformatics by properly mapping character strings into numerical sequences. We provide an optimized procedure for predicting protein-coding regions in DNA sequences based on the period-3 property of coding region. We present a digital correlating and filtering approach in the process of predicting these regions, and find out their locations by using the magnitude of the output sequence. These approaches result in improved computational techniques for the solution of useful problems in genomic information science and technology. PMID:19963599

    Superoscillatory wave forms, i.e., waves that locally oscillate faster than their highest Fourier component, possess unusual properties that make them of great interest from quantum mechanics to signal processing. However, the more pronounced the desired superoscillatory behavior is to be, the more difficult it becomes to produce, or even only calculate, such highly fine-tuned wave forms in practice. Here, we investigate how this sensitivity to preparation errors scales for a method for constructing superoscillatory functions which is optimal in the sense that it minimizes the energetic expense. We thereby also arrive at very accurate approximations of functions which are so highly superoscillatory that they cannot be calculated numerically. We then investigate to what extent the scaling and sensitivity results for superoscillatory functions on the real line extend to the experimentally important case of superoscillatory functions that are periodic.

    In the quest for the further miniaturization of electronic devices, numerous fabrication techniques have been developed. The semiconductor industry has been able to manifest miniaturization in highly complex and ultra low-power integrated circuits and devices, transforming almost every aspect of our lives. However, we may have come very close to the end of this trend. While advanced machines and techniques may be able to overcome technological barriers, theoretical and fundamental barriers are inherent to the top-down miniaturization approach and cannot be circumvented. As a result, the need for novel and natural alternatives to replace old materials is valued now more than ever. Fortunately, there exists a large group of materials that essentially has low-dimensional (quasi-one- or quasi-two-dimensional) structures. Graphene, a two-dimensional form of carbon, which has attracted a lot of attention in recent years, is a perfect example of a prime material from this group. Niobium tri-selenide (NbSe3), from a family of trichalcogenides, has a highly anisotropic structure and electrical conductivity. At sufficiently low temperatures, NbSe3 also exhibits two independent "sliding charge density waves"-- an exciting phenomenon, which could be altered by changing the overall size of the material. In NbSe3 (and Blue Bronze K0.3MoO3 which has a similar structure and electrical behavior), the effect of a periodic potential could be seen in creating a charge density wave (CDW) that is incommensurate to the underlying lattice. The required periodic potential is provided by the crystal ions when ordered in a particular way. The consequence is a peculiar non-linear conductivity behavior, as well as a unique narrow-band noise spectrum. Theoretical and experimental studies have concluded that the dynamic properties of resulting CDW are directly related to the crystal impurity density, and other pinning potentials.     The recognition that oxidative stress is a major component of several chronic diseases has engendered numerous trials of antioxidant therapies with minimal or no direct benefits. Nanomolar quantities of nitric oxide released into the circulation by pharmacologic stimulation of eNOS have antioxidant properties but physiologic stimulation as through increased pulsatile shear stress of the endothelium has not been assessed. The present study utilized a non-invasive technology, periodic acceleration (pGz) that increases pulsatile shear stress such that upregulation of cardiac eNOS occurs, We assessed its efficacy in normal mice and mouse models with high levels of oxidative stress, e.g. Diabetes type 1 and mdx (Duchene Muscular Dystrophy). pGz increased protein expression and upregulated eNOS in hearts. Application of pGz was associated with significantly increased expression of endogenous antioxidants (Glutathioneperoxidase-1(GPX-1), Catalase (CAT), Superoxide, Superoxide Dismutase 1(SOD1). This led to an increase of total cardiac antioxidant capacity along with an increase in the antioxidant response element transcription factor Nrf2 translocation to the nucleus. pGz decreased reactive oxygen species in both mice models of oxidative stress.     With the advent of the SLAC electron-positron linear collider (SLC) in the 100 GeV center-of-mass energy range, research and development work on even higher energy machines of this type has started in several laboratories in the United States, Europe, the Soviet Union and Japan. These linear colliders appear to provide the only promising approach to studying e/sup /plus//e/sup /minus// physics at center-of-mass energies approaching 1 TeV. This thesis concerns itself with the study of radio frequency properties of periodic accelerating structures for linear colliders and their interaction with bunched beams. The topics that have been investigated are: experimental measurements of the energy loss of single bunches to longitudinal modes in two types of structures, using an equivalent signal on a coaxial wire to simulate the beam; a method of canceling the energy spread created within a single bunch by longitudinal wakefields, through appropriate shaping of the longitudinal charge distribution of the bunch; derivation of the complete transient beam-loading equation for a train of bunches passing through a constant-gradient accelerator section, with application to the calculation and minimization of multi-bunch energy spread; detailed study of field emission and radio frequency breakdown in disk-loaded structures at S-, C- and X-band frequencies under extremely high-gradient conditions, with special attention to thermal effects, radiation, sparking, emission of gases, surface damage through explosive emission and its possible control through RF-gas processing. 53 refs., 49 figs., 9 tabs.

    Thyrotoxic hypokalemic periodic paralysis is characterized by attacks of generalized weakness associated to hypokalemia in patients with hyperthyroidism. We report a 25-year-old man with a history of spontaneously relapsing episodes of muscular weakness, who consulted for a rapidly evolving upper and lower limb paresis. Hypokalemia associated to a primary hyperthyroidism was detected. Treatment with antithyroid Drugs and potassium supplementation reverted symptoms and the episodes of acute muscular weakness did not reappear. PMID:21279257

  6. Drought length properties for periodic-stochastic hydrologic data

    Extreme droughts may be characterized by their duration, severity (magnitude or intensity), spatial extent, and frequency or return period. Comparing the time series of water supply and water demand and analyzing droughts based on the theory of runs may determine these characteristics. This study is focused on drought analysis where the underlying water supply process is periodic stochastic, such as for monthly streamflows. The probability mass function (pmf) of drought length and associated low-order moments are derived assuming a periodic simple Markov chain. The derived pmf allows estimating the occurrence probability of droughts of a given length and its return period. The applicability of the drought formulations has been illustrated using a variety of water supply series such as monthly and weekly precipitation, monthly streamflows, the Palmer hydrologic drought index, and the standardized precipitation index. The results obtained confirm the validity of the analytical derivations for drought lengths and associated return periods. The overall conclusion of the study is that simple definitions of droughts enables one characterizing droughts using stochastic approaches and analytical derivations. They are particularly useful for drought analysis because the limited hydrologic records that are generally available do not allow observing many drought events of a particular duration and, in fact, extremely long droughts may not even be observable from the historical sample. This hinders the applicability of an inferential approach for finding the probability distributions of drought lengths and their associated return periods because it is either impractical or not feasible.

    The research activities of the Division are centered primarily in three areas: experimental nuclear physics, experimental atomic physics, and theoretical nuclear and atomic physics. The largest of these efforts, experimental nuclear physics, is dominated by the heavy ion research program. A major responsibility under this program is the operation of the Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility as a national user facility. During the period of this report, the facility has begun routine operation for the experimental program. The experimental atomic physics program has two components: the accelerator-based studies of basic collisional phenomena and the studies in support of the controlled fusion program. Also associated with the fusion-related studies are a plasma diagnostics program and the operation of an atomic physics data center. The theoretical physics program, both nuclear and atomic, is covered. This program has benefited this year from the success of the VAX-AP computer system and from the increase in manpower provided by the ORNL/University of Tennessee Distinguished Scientist Program. Smaller programs in applications and high-energy physics are summarized. During the period of this report, we continued to explore possible future extensions of the Holifield Facility. We retain a strong interest in a relativistic heavy-ion collider in the 10 x 10 GeV/nuclear energy range. The ideas for such a facility, described in last year's report, have been modified to utilize the HHIRF 25 MV tandem accelerator as the first stage. Finally, the report concludes with some general information on publications, Division activities, and personnel changes.

    This report summarizes the results of ABLE`s design study of the FORTE deployable log periodic antenna. The resulting Baseline Design of the antenna is the basis for ABLE`s proposal for Phase II of this program. ABLE`s approach to meeting the requirements is to use a coilable ABLE mast as the deployable structure ``backbone`` of the antenna and to use deployable tubes for. the log periodic dipole elements of the antenna. This general approach was adopted at the outset of the Phase I Design Study. The remainder of the study was devoted to detailed design and analysis to properly size these types of mast and antenna elements and to design their deployment mechanisms. Demonstration models of the mast and antenna element deployer were fabricated as part of Phase I study. The study showed that ABLE`s design approach is feasible and can meet all the specified design requirements except the mass limit of 13.5 kg. Results of the design and analysis studies are summarized in this report. The mast and dipole element deployer are to be demonstrated to LANL personnel at the conclusion of this Phase I study.

    The periodic safety update report for marketed drugs (PSUR) was designed to be a stand-alone document that allows a periodic but comprehensive assessment of the worldwide safety data of a marketed drug or biological product. The PSUR can be an important source for the identification of new safety signals, a means of determining changes in the benefit-risk profile, an effective means of risk communication to regulatory authorities and an indicator for the need for risk management initiatives, as well as a tracking mechanism monitoring the effectiveness of such initiatives. For these reasons, the PSUR can be an important pharmacovigilance tool. Numerous steps are involved in the PSUR process including: intake of adverse drug reaction information, case processing, data retrieval, data analysis, and medical review and risk assessment. These processes are heavily reliant on the availability of adequate resources. An overarching principle throughout the PSUR process is the need for a proactive approach in order to identify the critical steps in the process and to have a clear understanding of the consequences of any critical 'mis-step'. With this information comes appropriate planning, building quality into each step of the PSUR process and monitoring performance will maximise the likelihood of generating a quality report. Any failure of a key PSUR process will have the opposite effect - a poor quality report that will give little insight into emerging safety signals or provide misleading information that can adversely affect public health. A pragmatic approach that will avoid or minimise these pitfalls includes the following: adequate resource planning, training, development of 'scripts' designed to maximise the capture of key information for medically important reactions, standardised and harmonised Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA) coding procedures, pre-specified search criteria for data retrieval, ongoing medical review, and metrics to evaluate

    The ground-state energy, hybridization matrix element, local moment, and spin-density correlations of a one-dimensional, finite-chain, periodic, symmetric Anderson model are obtained by numerical simulations and compared with perturbation theory and strong-coupling results. It is found that the local f-electron spins are compensated by correlation with other f-electrons as well as band electrons leading to a nonmagnetic ground state.

  12. The design and modeling of periodic materials with novel properties

    Cellular materials are ubiquitous in our world being found in natural and engineered systems as structural materials, sound and energy absorbers, heat insulators and more. Stochastic foams made of polymers, metals and even ceramics find wide use due to their novel properties when compared to monolithic materials. Properties of these so called hybrid materials, those that combine materials or materials and space, are derived from the localization of thermomechanical stresses and strains on the mesoscale as a function of cell topology. The effects of localization can only be generalized in stochastic materials arising from their inherent potential complexity, possessing variations in local chemistry, microstructural inhomogeneity and topological variations. Ordered cellular materials on the other hand, such as lattices and honeycombs, make for much easier study, often requiring analysis of only a single unit-cell. Theoretical bounds predict that hybrid materials have the potential to push design envelopes offering lighter stiffer and stronger materials. Hybrid materials can achieve very low and even negative coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) while retaining a relatively high stiffness -- properties completely unmatched by monolithic materials. In the first chapter of this thesis a two-dimensional lattice is detailed that possess near maximum stiffness, relative to the tightest theoretical bound, and low, zero and even appreciably negative thermal expansion. Its CTE and stiffness are given in closed form as a function of geometric parameters and the material properties. This result is confirmed with finite elements (FE) and experiment. In the second chapter the compressive stiffness of three-dimensional ordered foams, both closed and open cell, are predicted with FE and the results placed in property space in terms of stiffness and density.     This report covers the research and development activities of the Physics Division for the 1995 and 1996 fiscal years, beginning October 1, 1994, and ending September 30, 1996. The activities of the Division continue to be concentrated in the areas of experimental nuclear physics, experimental atomic physics, and theoretical nuclear and atomic physics. In addition, there are smaller programs in plasma diagnostics and data compilation and evaluation. During the period of this report, there has been considerable success in bringing the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) into routine operation. The budgets of the nuclear physics portion of the Division have increased each year in nearly all areas, and several new members have been added to the Division research and development staff. On August 30, 1996, the HRIBF successfully accelerated its first radioactive ion beams, {sup 69}As and {sup 70}As. Prior to this, the heart of the facility, the RIB injector system, was completed, including installation of a remote handling system for the target/ion source assembly. Target and ion source development is likely to be the technical key to success of the HRIBF. We have expanded our efforts in those development areas. Of special note is the development of highly permeable composite targets which have now been shown to allow release of difficult-to-produce radioactive ions such as {sup 17,18}F. A summary of the HRIBF work is provided in Chapter 1, along with supporting activities of the Joint Institute for Heavy Ion Research.

Results of the treatments at Illinois Power Company`s Wood River Station on the Mississippi River, Central Illinois Public Service`s Meredosia Station on the Illinois River, and SI Energy`s Gallagher Station on the Ohio River are reported. Treatments were performed on a turnkey basis, with three treatments performed at Meredosia Station in 1994, six treatments performed at Wood River Station between July 1993 and September 1994, and 2 treatments performed at Gallagher Station in 1994. For each treatment, a contractor installed and operated a portable chlorine dioxide generator, monitored water quality and oxidant levels, and provided and monitored bioboxes containing test mussels. Results of the treatments were very favorable, indicating a good potential for periodic treatments with chlorine dioxide to control zebra mussel infestations in the raw water systems of power plants and other industrial facilities. Some difficulties with the chlorine dioxide generation system and cold temperature effects reduced the treatment effectiveness, particularly the second treatment at Gallagher Station. Average induced mortalities ranged from 70 to 100% at Wood River, 87 to 92% at Meredosia, and 30 to 100% at Gallagher for native mussels. Dechlorination successfully kept total oxidant residual levels at or below 0.05 ppM during all treatments at all stations.

    The project has considered several aspects of how high fluence, near ultraviolet laser light modifies the optical properties of cerium doped crystals. Illumination of Ce/sup 3 +/:CaF/sub 2/ at 308 nm leads to a two-photon photoionization and the subsequent creation of photochromic color centers. A photoconductivity cell has been used to verify the two-step multi-photon ionization in Ce/sup 3 +/:YAG and Ce/sup 3 +/:CaF/sub 2/. Measurements of optical gain and loss in Ce/sup 3 +/:LiYF/sub 4/ are presented. A microcomputer controlled thermoluminescence spectrometer has been built to determine electron trap depths in rare-earth ion doped solids following their exposure to uv photoionizing light.

On shift of finite type over two symbols Σ{sub 2}, we show that the strong dense periodicity property implies another strong chaotic notions; locally everywhere onto (also called exact) and totally transitive.

    Tight-binding models capture many of the qualitative features of interaction-induced effects in solids. For example, the simplest such model, the single-band Hubbard Hamiltonian, describes the Mott insulating phase which occurs in correlated systems, despite the fact that the one electron band is nominally only half-filled, as well as the tendency towards magnetic order. Both phenomena occur in the transition metal oxides. The Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) is a step towards incorporating more complex orbital structure. It contains a pair of orbitals on each site--a delocalized conduction band and a set of highly correlated, localized states. The PAM successfully describes conditions for transitions between antiferromagnetic order of the local moments and phases in which these moments are quenched into singlets paired with conduction electrons. These phenomena are central to heavy fermion systems. The pressure-induced volume collapse in Ce has also been attributed to Kondo-like quenching of the local f moments in this metal, as has been discussed in the context of the impurity Anderson Model. The authors describe Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations of the magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the PAM in three dimensions. Previous QMC studies have been reported in one and two dimensions. A focus of our attention will be on the density of states and the specific heat. The organization of this paper is as follows. They first introduce the PAM and outline some of its properties. Next, a brief presentation of the Quantum Monte Carlo, Maximum Entropy, and Hartree-Fock methods is given. They then show the equilibrium magnetic properties of the PAM, including the spin correlations between conduction and localized orbitals, and antiferromagnetic correlations in the localized band, before turning to the thermodynamics and the density of states. A concluding section describes connections of this work to the problem of the rare earth volume collapse transitions.

To support the development of a 6-MW spar-mounted offshore wind turbine, Statoil funded NREL to perform tasks in the following three categories: 1. Design and analysis 2. Wake modeling 3. Concept resource assessment. This study expands upon the work conducted in Budget Period 1 (BP1) to investigate the influence of the wake generated from an upstream turbine on a downstream turbine using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) high-fidelity modeling tool. Simulator fOr Wind Farms Application (SOWFA) [1] is an NREL high fidelity modeling tool that couples OpenFOAM [2] CFD and NREL’s Aero-Elastic code Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence (FAST)[3]. In BP1 the configuration was based on Hywind-3MW at 140 m water depth in the Gulf of Maine; however this study for Budget Period 2 (BP2) the configuration investigated is based on Hywind-6MW at 220 m water depth off the coast of Boston. The objectives were to perform two-turbines One-Way Coupling (OWC), three-turbines Two-Way Coupling (TWC), and to investigate wind power plant optimization.

    Hydrocarbon contamination is a measure issue of concern as it adversely affects the soil inherent properties viz. index properties and strength properties.The main objective of this research work is to determine Electrical resistivity to study and correlate with soil index properties and engineering propertiescontaminated with hydrocarbon at the rate of 3%, 6% and 9% for the period of 15, 30 45 and 60 days and compare it with the results obtained for non-contaminated marine clay. Electrical resistivity of virgin marine clay (bentonite which is expansive in nature) and hydrocarbon contaminated clay for each percent of contamination is obtained in the laboratory for each period and its co-relation with index properties and engineering properties is proposed. CEC, EDAX tests were performed to evaluate the effect of ions of montmorillonite clays and their penetrability into hydrocarbon- clay matrix. The correlations at the end of each period for each percentage of contamination thus enabled to integrate index properties of non-contaminated and hydrocarbon contaminated marine clays with Electrical resistivity.

    We prove that n-periodic products (introduced by the first author in 1976) are uniquely characterized by certain quite specific properties. Using these properties, we prove that if a non-cyclic subgroup H of the n-periodic product of a given family of groups is not conjugate to any subgroup of the product's components, then H contains a subgroup isomorphic to the free Burnside group B(2, n). This means that H contains the free periodic groups B(m, n) of any rank m > 2, which lie in B(2, n) ([1], Russian p. 26). Moreover, if H is finitely generated, then it is uniformly non-amenable. We also describe all finite subgroups of n-periodic products.

    Extinction and photoluminescence spectra are experimentally and theoretically studied for a periodic array of gold nanowires deposited on top of a dielectric substrate containing silicon nanocrystals. Quasiguided modes are observed in the substrate resulting in modification of optical properties of silicon nanocrystals. Our calculations of extinction and photoluminescence spectra are in good agreement with experimental results. The periodicity provides a powerful tool for achieving a high photoluminescence outcoupling efficiency of silicon nanocrystals.

    At the request of the United States (U.S.) government, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) assembled a team of 20 senior safety experts to review the regulatory framework for the safety of operating nuclear power plants in the United States. This review focused on the effectiveness of the regulatory functions implemented by the NRC and on its commitment to nuclear safety and continuous improvement. One suggestion resulting from that review was that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) incorporate lessons learned from periodic safety reviews (PSRs) performed in other countries as an input to the NRC’s assessment processes. In the U.S., commercial nuclear power plants (NPPs) are granted an initial 40-year operating license, which may be renewed for additional 20-year periods, subject to complying with regulatory requirements. The NRC has established a framework through its inspection, and operational experience processes to ensure the safe operation of licensed nuclear facilities on an ongoing basis. In contrast, most other countries do not impose a specific time limit on the operating licenses for NPPs, they instead require that the utility operating the plant perform PSRs, typically at approximately 10-year intervals, to assure continued safe operation until the next assessment. The staff contracted with Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) to perform a pilot review of selected translated PSR assessment reports and related documentation from foreign nuclear regulatory authorities to identify any potential new regulatory insights regarding license renewal-related topics and NPP operating experience (OpE). A total of 14 PSR assessment documents from 9 countries were reviewed. For all of the countries except France, individual reports were provided for each of the plants reviewed. The experimental nuclear physics program continues to be dominated by research utilizing heavy ions. The UNISOR program, since its inception, has been intimately associated with the Division and, most particularly, with the Holifield Facility. The efforts in theoretical physics, covering both nuclear and atomic physics, are presented. In addition to research with multicharged heavy ions from the ECR source, the effort on atomic physics in support of the controlled fusion program includes a plasma diagnostics development program. The concentration of this program on optical and laser technology is marked by the change in designation to the Laser and Electro-Optics Lab. This document summarizes the work performed in Work Package (WP) 3, where the spatial variability and influence that relevant parameters have on levelized cost of energy (LCOE) were analyzed. The study allows Statoil to identify areas of interest for floating wind technology and the Hywind concept in particular. This report describes the results of a study that NREL conducted to provide targeted insight into the United States (U.S.) offshore wind resource area that Statoil can use for taking strategic decisions about how to commercialize and market the company’s Hywind technology. The report centers on a new spatio-economic methodology that NREL has developed to assess how variability in spatial parameters can influence levelized cost of energy (LCOE) for different technologies.     In unsteady groundwater flow (or similar processes of heat/electrical conduction), the heterogeneous medium structure is characterized by two random properties, the conductivity K and the specific storativity S. The average head field ⟨H ⟩and the associated effective properties Kef, Sef are determined for a layer with a periodic head drop between boundaries, such that H is periodic in time, and a medium made up of a matrix with a dilute concentration of spherical inclusions. In the common quasi-steady approximation, Kef is equal to the classical steady solution while Sef = SA, the arithmetic mean. We derive expressions for the frequency dependent Kef, Sef, which are generally complex, i.e., dynamic. The main result is the delineation of the ranges of the parameters: dimensionless frequency (ω) and contrasts of conductivity (κ) and storativity (s) between the matrix and the inclusions, for which dynamic effects are significant.

    We investigate the electronic band structure and transport properties of periodically alternating mono- and bi-layer graphene superlattices (MBLG SLs). In such MBLG SLs, there exists a zero-averaged wave vector (zero-\\overline{k} ) gap that is insensitive to the lattice constant. This zero-\\overline{k} gap can be controlled by changing both the ratio of the potential widths and the interlayer coupling coefficient of the bilayer graphene. We also show that there exist extra Dirac points; the conditions for these extra Dirac points are presented analytically. Lastly, we demonstrate that the electronic transport properties and the energy gap of the first two bands in MBLG SLs are tunable through adjustment of the interlayer coupling and the width ratio of the periodic mono- and bi-layer graphene.

    Liquid crystal (LC) cells with periodic alignment distributions were fabricated using chiral nematic LCs (N*LCs), which were prepared using mixtures of a nematic LC and a chiral dopant, along with photoreactive liquid crystalline polymer (PLCP) films. Periodic structures were formed by polarization holographic recording in the PLCP films. The director distribution in each cell depended on the ratio of chiral dopant present, i.e., the inherent helical pitch of the N*LCs. These periodic alignment structures with line defects in the LC grating cells were well explained on the basis of the elastic continuum theory of the N*LCs and the photoalignment effect of the PLCP films. The diffraction properties of the grating LC cells were also investigated using a polarized visible laser. The observed intensity and polarization states of the diffracted beams were consistent with theoretical ones calculated using the director distribution models. Our results clarify that the diffraction properties of the grating LC cells can be controlled by the helical pitch of the N*LCs.

    We report the case of a man with episodic cluster headache who suffered from severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as well as periodic limb movements during sleep (PLMS). His attacks of headache occurred primarily during sleep being timely to REM sleep as 90 to 120 minutes interval. OSAs were more frequent and prolonged during REM sleep and oxygen saturation decreased to 81% during this sleep period. Periodic limb movements were also observed in our patient that were more frequent during the first half of the polysomnographic recordings. This case is one of the few reporting cases with CH who had both OSA and PLMS. PMID:15663620

    We embark on a study of quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) in the decay phase of white-light stellar flares observed by Kepler. Out of the 1439 flares on 216 different stars detected in the short-cadence data using an automated search, 56 flares are found to have pronounced QPP-like signatures in the light curve, of which 11 have stable decaying oscillations. No correlation is found between the QPP period and the stellar temperature, radius, rotation period and surface gravity, suggesting that the QPPs are independent of global stellar parameters. Hence they are likely to be the result of processes occurring in the local environment. There is also no significant correlation between the QPP period and flare energy, however there is evidence that the period scales with the QPP decay time for the Gaussian damping scenario, but not to a significant degree for the exponentially damped case. This same scaling has been observed for MHD oscillations on the Sun, suggesting that they could be the cause of the QPPs in those flares. Scaling laws of the flare energy are also investigated, supporting previous reports of a strong correlation between the flare energy and stellar temperature/radius. A negative correlation between the flare energy and stellar surface gravity is also found.

  12. Coherence-polarization properties of fields radiated from transversely periodic electromagnetic sources

    Planar electromagnetic sources characterized by a periodic variation of their beam coherence-polarization matrix are investigated, as far as the polarization features of the radiated fields are concerned, within the framework of the paraxial approximation. A propagation scheme based on plane-wave decomposition leads to a longitudinal periodicity of the polarization properties of the field, thus extending the Talbot effect to the case of partially coherent electromagnetic sources. The polarization features of beams radiated from sources of this type are illustrated by means of simple examples. In particular, it is shown that completely unpolarized sources with uniform intensity profiles can be easily realized, for which the propagated field becomes perfectly polarized across some transverse planes, and vice versa.

    The effect of self-similarity on acoustic and elastic wave propagation at normal incidence is investigated using Classical Cantor and Fibonacci multilayered structures. They are made of two sorts of orthotropic plies having differently oriented orthotropic axes with respect to the propagation direction. The properties of their transmission coefficient are presented using a unidirectional numerical model based on a transfer matrix formalism. It was found that stack self-similarity influences the acoustic transmission properties. Transmission coefficients of self-similar stacks present a self-similar shape and behavior. A self-similar process, applied to layer orientation allows multilayered stacks to be created. A thickness-equivalent model was developed to compare these structures with standard self-similar multilayers which are finally compared to periodic and random stacks. The transmission coefficient of a deterministic self-similar Fibonacci structure is similar to that of an averaged transmission coefficient of random stacks. PMID:24907802

  18. Layer thickness and period as design parameters to tailor pyroelectric properties in ferroelectric superlattices

    We theoretically examine the pyroelectric properties of ferroelectric-paraelectric superlattices as a function of layer thickness and configuration using non-linear thermodynamics coupled with electrostatic and electromechanical interactions between layers. We specifically study PbZr{sub 0.3}Ti{sub 0.7}O{sub 3}/SrTiO{sub 3} superlattices. The pyroelectric properties of such constructs consisting of relatively thin repeating units are shown to exceed the pyroelectric response of monolithic PbZr{sub 0.3}Ti{sub 0.7}O{sub 3} films. This is related to periodic internal electric fields generated due to the polarization mismatch between layers that allows tailoring of the shift in the transition temperature. Our results indicate that higher and electric field sensitive pyroresponse can be achieved from layer-by-layer engineered ferroelectric heterostructures.

    We demonstrate an alternative approach to tuning the refractive index of materials. Current methodologies for tuning the refractive index of a material often result in undesirable changes to the structural or optoelectronic properties. By artificially layering a transparent conducting oxide with a lower refractive index material the overall film retains a desirable conductivity and mobility while acting optically as an effective medium with a modified refractive index. Calculations indicate that, with our refractive index change of 0.2, a significant reduction of reflective losses could be obtained by the utilisation of these structures in optoelectronic devices. Beyond this, periodic superlattice structures present a solution to decouple physical properties where the underlying electronic interaction is governed by different length scales. PMID:27623228

  13. Extended phase matching properties of periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate isomorphs

    We theoretically investigate the properties of extended phase-matching (EPM) for spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in four kinds of potassium titanyl phosphate isomorphs ( i.e., KTiOPO4, KTiOAsO4, RbTiOPO4, and RbTiOAsO4 crystals). The technique is based on Type II 2nd-order nonlinear optic interaction in periodically poled ferroelectric domain structures, where a single photon with a frequency of 2 ω generates a pair of photons with frequencies of ω that are orthogonally polarized with respect to each other. Under EPM, both quasi-phase matching (QPM) and group velocity (GV) matching between interacting waves are efficiently satisfied for the generation of a pair of polarization-entangled bi-photon states with frequencies of ω. Our simulation results show that the generated photon pairs have broad spectral bandwidths of over 69 - 95 nm in tele-communication bands, which are much broader than those of the typical non-EPM case ( e.g., ~ sub-nm bandwidth when only the QPM, not the GV matching, is achieved). We will describe the EPM properties of the four kinds of KTP isomorphs in terms of interaction type, GV matching wavelength, domain poling period, and spectral bandwidth. We highlight that the KTP isomorphs have nice potential as suitable components for constituting new quantum information processing systems.

  14. Evaluation of bionanocomposites as packaging material on properties of soft white cheese during storage period.

    Novel bionanocomposites based on chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol)/titanium nanoparticles (CS/PVA/TiO2 nanocomposite) were prepared and used as packaging materials for soft white cheese. The prepared bionanocomposites were characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM and FT-IR. The CS/PVA/TiO2 bionanocomposites exhibited good mechanical properties. Furthermore, the obtained bionanocomposites exhibited superior antibacterial activity against gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus), gram negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli) bacteria and fungi (Candidia albicans). The soft white cheese was manufactured and packaged within the CS/PVA/TiO2 nanocomposite films and stored at 7 °C for 30 days. The color, rheological and chemical properties of cheese were evaluated, also the influence of CS/PVA/TiO2 bionanocomposites on microbiological analysis of soft white cheese was assessed, the results indicated that the total bacterial counts, mold & yeast and coliform decreased with the increasing storage period and disappeared at the end of storage period compared with control.   15. Effect of harvesting periods on the chemical and pasting properties of trifoliate yam flour.

    The effects of delayed harvesting on the chemical and pasting properties of trifoliate yam flour were studied. The tubers were harvested at 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11months after maturity and were processed into flours. Chemical and pasting properties of the flours were determined. White trifoliate yam flour at 11months was significantly different (p<0.05) from other flours in dry matter and fibre contents but the lignin content (1.83%) was not significant different (p>0.05) from yellow trifoliate yam flour at 11months. Amylose and starch contents decreased while the sugar contents increased with harvesting periods. Yellow trifoliate yam flour had higher amylose at 10months while the white trifoliate yam flour had higher starch at 9months and sugar contents at 11months. Potassium and sodium were the major minerals found in the yam with higher values in yellow trifoliate yam flours. Peak viscosity and breakdown decreased while the holding strength and final viscosities increased with harvesting periods. Harvesting trifoliate yam tubers at 7-9months produced flour with high quality and prevents post harvest losses. PMID:24001826

Groundwater monitoring programs described in this report comply with the interim- and final- status federal and state regulations. The RCRA projects are monitored under one of the following programs: background monitoring, indicator parameter evaluation, or groundwater quality assessment or detection. This quarterly report contains data received between July 1 and Sept. 30, 1995, which are the cutoff dates for this reporting period. This report may contain not only data from the July-Sept. quarter, but also data from earlier sampling events not previously reported.

  17. The physical properties of giant exoplanets within 400 days of period

    At a time when small planets in the habitable zone are found, not all the questions about giant planets have been answered. For example, their formation, migration and evolution are far from being fully understood. In this context, the Kepler space mission is providing unprecedented constraints to theories by probing transiting giant planets in a wide range of orbital periods. In this talk, we will present the results of a 6-year spectroscopic survey with the SOPHIE spectrograph of the transiting giant-planet candidates detected by Kepler within 400 days of period. First, we will describe the giant-planet candidate sample from the Kepler catalog and our spectroscopic observations which allowed us to screen out more than half of the candidates as false positives. Then, we will present the occurrence rate of giant planets, based on our sample cleaned from fake transiting planets, and compare it with other surveys. Finally, we will discuss the physical properties of the giant transiting planets within 400 days of period and compare them with predictions from planet-synthesis models.

  18. Locations of stationary/periodic solutions in mean motion resonances according to properties of dust grains

    The equations of secular evolution for dust grains in mean motion resonances with a planet are solved for stationary points. This is done including both Poynting-Robertson effect and stellar wind. The solutions are stationary in semimajor axis, eccentricity, and resonant angle, but allow the pericentre to advance. The semimajor axis of stationary solutions can be slightly shifted from the exact resonant value. The periodicity of the stationary solutions in a reference frame orbiting with the planet is analytically proved. The existence of periodic solutions in mean motion resonances means that analytical theory enables for dust particles also infinitely long capture times. The stationary solutions are periodic motions to which the eccentricity asymptotically approaches and around which the libration occurs. Using numerical integration of equation of motion are successfully found initial conditions corresponding to the stationary solutions. Numerically and analytically determined shifts of the semimajor axis form the exact resonance for the stationary solutions are in excellent agreement. The stationary solutions can be plotted by locations of pericenters in the reference frame orbiting with the planet. The pericenters are distributed in the space according to properties of dust particles.

  19. Acoustical properties of air-saturated porous material with periodically distributed dead-end pores.

    A theoretical and numerical study of the sound propagation in air-saturated porous media with straight main pores bearing lateral cavities (dead-ends) is presented. The lateral cavities are located at "nodes" periodically spaced along each main pore. The effect of periodicity in the distribution of the lateral cavities is studied, and the low frequency limit valid for the closely spaced dead-ends is considered separately. It is shown that the absorption coefficient and transmission loss are influenced by the viscous and thermal losses in the main pores as well as their perforation rate. The presence of long or short dead-ends significantly alters the acoustical properties of the material and can increase significantly the absorption at low frequencies (a few hundred hertz). These depend strongly on the geometry (diameter and length) of the dead-ends, on their number per node, and on the periodicity along the propagation axis. These effects are primarily due to low sound speed in the main pores and to thermal losses in the dead-end pores. The model predictions are compared with experimental results. Possible designs of materials of a few cm thicknesses displaying enhanced low frequency absorption at a few hundred hertz are proposed. PMID:25920830

    Stroke in pregnancy and the puerperium is a rare but potentially devastating event. We present the case of a previously healthy woman who underwent a cesarean delivery and experienced a middle cerebral artery thrombosis in the immediate postpartum period that was subsequently lysed with intra-arterial urokinase. The patient made a complete neurologic recovery. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of successful intra-arterial thrombolysis for ischemic stroke in the postpartum period.

    Omega Centauri contains a rich harvest of variable stars. Here we report on a deep, wide-field, near-infrared (IR) variability survey for this cluster, carried out using ESO's 4.1m VISTA telescope. Our time-series data includes more than 180 RR Lyrae light curves in both J and Ks, allowing us to derive an unprecedented homogeneous and complete near-IR catalog of RR Lyrae in the field of omega Cen. Near-IR period-luminosity relations are derived and used to determine an updated (pulsational) distance modulus for the cluster.

    The ordering mechanism of long-period superstructures (LPSs) in Al-rich TiAl alloys has been investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The LPSs are classified in terms of arrangements of base clusters with different shapes and compositions formed in Ti-rich (002) layers of L10-TiAl matrix: square Ti4Al, fat rhombus Ti3Al, and lean rhombus Ti2Al type clusters. The HRTEM observations revealed that antiphase boundaries of long-range-ordered LPS domains and short-range-ordered microdomains are constructed by various space-filling arrangements of the base clusters. Such a microscopic property characterized by the base clusters and their arrangements is markedly analogous to that of the {left< {{text{1,1/2,0}}} rightrangle } * special-point ordering alloys such as Ni-Mo.

    We study a defect mode in a one-dimensional photonic band gap of a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) consisting of two helicoidal periodicities. The optical properties of this CLC are analyzed using 4×4 transfer matrix and finite difference time domain (FDTD) methods. In calculated transmission spectra of this CLC, one of the defect modes always appears at the band edge wavelength of the inner CLC having a different helix to that of two sides of CLCs. Furthermore, the electric field analysis of this CLC has also been demonstrated by the FDTD method. At the defect mode wavelength, the electric field enhancement is found to be significant larger than a normal CLC.

    Employing the characteristic matrix method, this study investigates transmission properties of one-dimensional defective lossy photonic crystals composed of negative and positive refractive index layers with one lossless defect layer at the center of the crystal. The results of the study show that as the refractive index and thickness of the defect layer increase, the frequency of the defect mode decreases. In addition, the study shows that the frequency of the defect mode is sensitive to the incidence angle, polarization, and physical properties of the defect layer, but it is insensitive to the small lattice loss factor. The peak of the defect mode is very sensitive to the loss factor, incidence angle, polarization, refractive index, and thickness of the defect layer. This study also shows that the peak and the width of the defect mode are affected by the numbers of the lattice period and the loss factor. The results can lead to designing new types of narrow filter structures and other optical devices.
