    Protactinium, element 91, is one of the most rare of the naturally occurring elements and may well be the most difficult of all to extract from natural sources. Protactinium is, formally, the third element of the actinide series and the first having a 5f electron. The superconducting properties of protactinium metal provide clear evidence that Pa is a true actinide element (Smith et al., 1979). Its chemical behavior in aqueous solution, however, would seem to place it in group VB of the Mendeleev's table, below Ta and Nb.

    A preliminary design study for the utilization of thorium added with 231Pa based fuel on BWR type reactor has been performed. In the previous research utilization of fuel based Thorium-232 and Uranium-233 show 10 years operation time with maximum excess-reactivity about 4.075% dk/k. To increase reactor operation time and reduce excess-reactivity below 1% dk/k, Protactinium (Pa-231) is used as Burnable Poison. Protactinium-231 has very interesting neutronic properties, which enable the core to reduce initial excess-reactivity and simultaneously increase production of 233U to 231Pa in burn-up process. Optimizations of the content of 231Pa in the core enables the BWR core to sustain long period of operation time with reasonable burn-up reactivity swing. Based on the optimization of fuel element composition (Th and Pa) in various moderation ratio we can get reactor core with longer operation time, 20 ˜ 30 years operation without fuel shuffling or refuelling, with average power densities maximum of about 35 watt/cc, and maximum excess-reactivity 0.56% dk/k.

    A new method was developed for the extraction and separation of {sup 233}Pa from thermal neutron-irradiated {sup 232}Th. Solutions of Pa{sup 233} were prepared in LiCI-HCl solutions from which appreciable extraction was obtained using dibenzo-18-crown-6 in 1,2-dichloroethane. The effects of cavity size, substitutions on the crown ring, type of the organic solvent, and temperature on extraction are discussed. Very high separation factors were obtained for the pairs {sup 233}Pa/{sup 232}Th (>105), {sup 233}Pa/{sup 233}U (> 1000), and {sup 232}U/{sup 232}Th (>60). (authors)

    A method of producing and separating protactinium from taorium containing solids is described. The protactinium is formed by irradiating thorium containing solids, such as thorium dioxide and thorium tetrafluoride with neutrons. The protactinium is separated from the thorium solids by contacting the solids with a non-squeous solution of hydrogen fluoride and a complexing agent, NO/sub 2/. The protactinium complex formed is soluble in the non-aqueous solution, whereas the thorium solids remain insoluble in the solution. (AEC)

    The separation of protactinium by volatilization method is described. According to the invention, neutron irradiated finely divided thorium is reacted with aluminum trichloride or a mixture of aluminum trichloride and chlorine gas at a temperature of preferably between about 200 and 400 deg C. Following the chlorinating step the protactinium chloride along with aluminum chloride is selectively distilled from the mixture at a temperature of approximately 100 deg C. The protactinium chloride may be recovered from the mixture by treatment with sodium hydroxide, which converts the aluminum chloride to a soluble salt and forms insoluble protactinium hydroxide.

    A process is presented for the separation of protactinium values from an aqueous solution containing Pa and Th values comprising establishing in the solution a HCl concentration of from 4 to 11 molar, contacting the resulting solution with an anion-exchange adsorbent, such as a polystyrene divinyl benzene polymer with quatenary amines as the active exchange group, to effect the adsorption of Pa values upon the adsorbent while leaving Th values in the solution, and then washlng the separated Pa bearing adsorbent with an aqueous solution of HCl of less than 4M to exclusively elute Pa values from the adsorbent. If hexavalent U values are contained in the original solution thcy are adsorbed on the resin together with Pa. A separation is offected chromatographically by percolating the resin with aqueous HCl.

    The recovery of fluoride complexed protactinium from aqueous acidic solutions by solvent extraction is described. Generally the prccess of the invention com rises mixing an aqueous solution containing protactinium in a complexed form with an organic solvent which is specific for protactinium, such as diisopropyl carbinol, then decomposing the protactinium complex by adjusting the acidity of the aqueous solution to between 0-3 to 0-9 M in hydrogen ion concentration, and introducing a source of aluminum ions in sufficient quantity to establish a concentration of 0.5 to 1.2 M aluminum ion, whereupon decomposition of the protactinium fluoride complex takes place and the protactinium ion is taken up by the organic solvent phase.

    The separation of protactinium from aqueous solutions from its mixtures with thorium, uranium and fission products is described. The process for the separation comprises preparing an ion nitric acid solution containing protactinium in the pentavalent state and contacting the solution with a fluorinated beta diketone, such as trifluoroacetylacetone, either alone or as an organic solvent solution to form a pentavalent protactinium chelate compound. When the organic solvent is present the chelate compound is extracted; otherwise it is separated by filtration.

    The Canadian Basin of the Arctic Ocean, largely ice covered and isolated from deep contact with the more dynamic Eurasian Basin by the Lomonosov Ridge, has historically been considered an area of low productivity and particle flux and sluggish circulation. High-sensitivity mass-spectrometric measurements of the naturally occurring radionuclides protactinium-231 and thorium-230 in the deep Canada Basin and on the adjacent shelf indicate high particle fluxes and scavenging rates in this region. The thorium-232 data suggest that offshore advection of particulate material from the shelves contributes to scavenging of reactive materials in areas of permanent ice cover. PMID:9545211

    The Gamma-3 assembly of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna, Russia is designed to emulate the neutron spectrum of a thermal Accelerator Driven System (ADS). It consists of a lead spallation target surrounded by reactor grade graphite. The target was irradiated with 1.6 GeV deuterons from the Nuclotron accelerator and the neutron capture and fission rate of 232Th in several locations within the assembly were experimentally measured. 232Th is a proposed fuel for envisaged Accelerator Driven Systems and these two reactions are fundamental to the performance and feasibility of 232Th in an ADS. The irradiation of the Gamma-3 assembly was also simulated using MCNPX 2.7 with the INCL4 intra-nuclear cascade and ABLA fission/evaporation models. Good agreement between the experimentally measured and calculated reaction rates was found. This serves as a good validation for the computational models and cross section data used to simulate neutron production and transport of spallation neutrons within a thermal ADS.

    This patent relates to the separation of uranium from thorium and protactinium; such mixtures of elements usually being obtained by neutron irradiation of thorium. The method of separating the constituents has been first to dissolve the mixture of elements in concertrated nitric acid and then to remove the protactinium by absorption on manganese dioxide and the uranium by solvent extraction with ether. Prior to now, comparatively large amounts of thorium were extracted with the uranium. According to the invention this is completely prevented by adding sodium diethyldithiocarbamate to the mixture of soluble nitrate salts. The organic salt has the effect of reacting only with the uranyl nitrate to form the corresponding uranyl salt which can then be selectively extracted from the mixture with amyl acetate.

    Complex fluorides of protactinium having a Pa/M ratio of one (where M = K, Rb, or NH(4)) have been prepared from concentrated solutions of HF. These MPaF(6) compounds are isostructural with the corresponding compounds of pentavalent uranium but not with the tantalum analogs.     (230)U/(226)Th is a promising novel alpha-emitter system for application in targeted alpha therapy of cancer. The therapeutic nuclides can be produced by proton irradiation of natural (232)Th according to the reaction (232)Th(p,3n)(230)Pa, followed by subsequent beta decay of (230)Pa to (230)U. In this study, the experimental excitation function for the (232)Th(p,3n)(230)Pa reaction up to 34 MeV proton energy has been measured using the stacked-foil technique. The proton energies in the various foils were calculated with the SRIM 2003 code and gamma-ray spectrometry was used to measure the activities of the various radioisotopes produced. The measured cross-sections are in good agreement with selected literature values and with model calculations using the EMPIRE II code. The reaction (232)Th(p,3n)(230)Pa allows the production of carrier-free (230)U in clinically relevant levels. PMID:18374585

    A method is provided for separating protactinium from a molten fluonlde salt composition consisting essentially of at least one alkali and alkaline earth metal fluoride and at least one soluble fluoride of uranium or thorium which comprises oxidizing the protactinium in said composition to the + 5 oxidation state and contacting said composition with an oxide selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal oxide, an alkaline earth oxide, thorium oxide, and uranium oxide, and thereafter isolating the resultant insoluble protactinium oxide product from said composition.   6. Comparison of the (p,xn) cross sections from /sup 238/U, /sup 235/U, and /sup 232/Th targets irradiated with 200-MeV protons

    We have measured absolute cross sections for (p,xn) reactions (x ranges from 0 to 8) from /sup 238/U, /sup 235/U, and /sup 232/Th targets irradiated with 200-MeV protons at the Brookhaven AGS Linac injector. Chemical yields were determined by using /sup 239/Np and /sup 233/Pa as tracers. Yield patterns obtained in this work can be compared to the experimental results and theoretical calculations from earlier work, and they are consistent within the framework of intranuclear cascade followed by neutron evaporation and fission competition.

    Light protactinium isotopes have been produced with /sup 204/Pb (/sup 19/F,xn) reactions. ..cap alpha..-activities with E/sub ..cap alpha../ = 9.90(5) MeV, T/sub 1/2/ = 53(10) ns and E/sub ..cap alpha../ = 9.65(5) MeV, T/sub 1/2/ = 0.78(16) ..mu..s could be attributed to the previously unobserved nuclei /sup 219/Pa and /sup 220/Pa with the help of excitation functions. The peak cross sections for the 4n and 3n evaporation channels are on the order of 10 ..mu..b. The decay energies as well as the halflives fit well into the systematics of these nuclei close to the magic neutron number N = 126. /sup 219/Pa is the shortest lived nuclide known with directly measured halflife.

    The extraction of protactinium with organic solvents has been investigated in the presence of water-miscible alcohols and acetone. These additives were found to increase considerably the extraction of protactinium in the cases of trilaurylamine, tributyl phosphate and isobutyl methyl ketone. The influence was less in the case of thenoyltrifluoroacetone. In mixtures of an acid with various alcohols, the influence depended on the alcohol concentration, the acidity and on the chain lengths and dielectric constants of the alcohol introduced into the extraction system.     This paper describes a combined experimental and modeling program of generic sorption studies to increase confidence in the performance assessment for a potential high-level radioactive waste repository in Japan. The sorption of polonium, actinium and protactinium onto geological materials has been investigated. Sorption of these radioelements onto bentonite, tuff and granodiorite from equilibrated de-ionized water was studied under reducing conditions at room temperature. In addition, the sorption of actinium and protactinium was investigated at 60 C. Thermodynamic chemical modeling was carried out to aid interpretation of the results.

    Measurements have been made on protactinium distributions between molten lithium and sodium fluorides and solid lanthanum or zirconium oxides as affected by time, amount of solid, and amount of gas (air of argon) at 1023 K. Protactinium can be extracted quantitatively from LiF-NaF melts by the two oxides. It is found that all the regularities previously reported for actinoid distributions in halide liquids in the presence of oxides apply to protactinium.

    The last decade saw the emergence of various theoretical analysis and developments of ADS (Accelerator Driving System). Different transport codes, nuclear models and nuclear cross sections have been used to predict and estimate the properties of ADS. The energy of the proton beam is supposed to range between 1 and 1.5 GeV, but some analyses suggest higher energy - up to 10 GeV. The recent papers examine the influence of the nuclear models on neutron induced reactions (n,f), (n,g), (n,xn), (n,el.) and (n,inel.). The experimental set-ups and the presumable ADS constructions consist of thousands of segments and details for example project Myrrha, Belgum [1]. The calculation of the above reactions depends on the neutron spectrum in each segment. There is a considerable difference in the size of these segments in ADS, which makes the estimation of the influence of the nuclear models and the cross sections on the integral number of neutron induced reactions more difficult. This article considers the influence of different cross section data tables on neutron induced reactions in 238U or 232Th targets. One nuclear model describing the high energy part of the nuclear interaction and various cross section data tagble (ENDF, ENDL, TENDL2014 and etc.) are used. All particles generated in the nuclear interaction process deposit their energy in the target volume. MCNP 6.1 transport code was used.

  1. A measurement of the thermal neutron capture cross section of /sup 232/Th

    The thermal neutron capture cross section of /sup 232/Th has been measured relative to that of /sup 197/Au. Foils of gold, thorium metal, and thoria were irradiated together in the NRU reactor thermal column. The /sup 198/Au activity was assayed in a 4..pi gamma.. ionization chamber, which had been previously calibrated with samples of /sup 198/Au standardized by the 4..pi beta..-..gamma.. coincidence method. Protactinium-233 sources were also standardized by this method. Comparison of these sources with the irradiated thorium, by means of a Ge(Li) spectrometer, enabled the /sup 233/Pa activity in the thorium-bearing foils to be determined. Taking the 2200 m/s capture cross section of /sup 197/Au to be 98.8 b, that of /sup 232/Th is found to be 7.33+.0.06b. The uncertainty is at the 95% confidence level and includes an estimate of the systematic uncertainties.

  2. Recovery of protactinium-231 and thorium-230 from cotter concentrate: pilot plant operatins and process development

    The equipment and methods used to recover and purify 339 g of thorium-230 and 890 mg of protactinium-231 from 22 of the 1251 drums of Cotter Concentrate are described. The process developed was (1) dissolution at 100/sup 0/C in concentrated nitric acid and dilution to 2 to 3 molar acid, (2) filtration to remove undissolved solids (mostly silica filter aid), (3) extraction of uranium with di-sec-butyl-phenyl phophonate (DSBPP) in carbon tetrachloride, (4) extraction of both thorium and protactinium with tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO) in carbon tetrachloride followed by selective stripping of the thorium with dilute of sulfuric acid, (5) thorium purification using oxalic acid, (6) stripping protactinium from the TOPO with oxalic acid, and (7) protactinium purification through a sequence of steps. The development of the separation procedures, the design of the pilot plant, and the operating procedures are described in detail. Analytical procedures are given in an appendix. 8 figures, 4 tables.

    Thorium-232 reference materials having a matrix similar to soil and uranium-mill tailings are necessary for ensuring uniform standardization among measurements performed by remedial-action contractors. A task was undertaken by the Technical Measurements Center (TMC) to prepare some 200 pounds each of three different concentrations of Th-232 reference material by diluting a thorium ore with soil. Target values for Th-232 content were 70, 30, and 10 pCi/g. The recommended thorium-232 concentrations for the three reference materials are 71.2 +- 2.0 pCi/g, 30.5 +- 0.6 pCi/g, and 10.2 +- 0.3 pCi/g.

Simplified neutron-balance, accelerator, reactor-core, chemical-processing, and balance-of-plant models are combined parametrically with a simplified costing model. The main focus of this model is to examine trade offs related to fission power density, reactor-core modularity, {sup 233}U breeding rate, and fission product transmutation capacity.

    The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) transports water and heat over long distances in the Atlantic Ocean and is believed to have an important effect on Earth's climate. Knowing how strong the AMOC was in the past is essential to understanding past climate. One proxy researchers have used to assess the past strength of the AMOC is the sedimentary protactinium- thorium ratio (231Pa/230Th). Both 231Pa and 230Th are produced through decay of uranium at a constant rate in the ocean water column, but 230Th does not last long enough in the water to be transported away from the location where it was produced, while 231Pa has a longer residence time in the water. Therefore, sedimentary 231Pa/230Th ratios could provide information about the strength of past ocean circulation.

    Small-core pseudopotentials for actinium, thorium, and protactinium have been energy-adjusted to multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock reference data based on the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian and the Fermi nucleus model. Corresponding optimized valence basis sets of polarized valence quadruple-ζ quality are presented. Atomic test calculations for the first four ionization potentials show satisfactory results at both the Hartree-Fock and the multireference averaged coupled-pair functional level. Highly correlated Fock-space coupled cluster calculations demonstrate that the new pseudopotentials yield ionization potentials, which are in excellent agreement with corresponding all-electron results and experimental data. The pseudopotentials and basis sets supplement a similar set previously published for uranium. PMID:24628327

  8. Nuclear fission of neutron-deficient protactinium nuclides

    Fragment velocity, kinetic energy, mass yield, and element yield distributions in the fission of neutron-deficient Pa isotopes produced in the reactions of {sup 16}O and {sup 18}O on {sup 209}Bi have been measured at incident beam energies near and above the Coulomb barriers by the time-of-flight and radiochemical methods. An asymmetric mass-division component has been observed. Measured fission cross sections were compared with the results of statistical model calculations which take into account two fission barrier heights for symmetric and asymmetric yields. The fission barrier height deduced for the asymmetric fission is found slightly lower than that for the symmetric one. The difference between the two barrier heights in the fission of the present protactinium nuclides (N{approximately}135) is considerably smaller than that in the neutron-rich nuclide of {sup 233}Pa (N{approximately}142), indicating that the difference sensitively depends on the neutron number of the fissioning nuclide. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

  9. Gastrointestinal absorption of protactinium, uranium, and neptunium in the hamster

    The gastrointestinal absorption of protactinium, uranium, and neptunium in adult hamsters was measured. The actinide preparations were administered intragastrically and animals were kept 2 to 4 weeks prior to the radiochemical analysis of selected tissue samples. Total absorption was estimated using data for the distribution of the actinides after intravenous injection in soluble form. The values obtained were 3.9 and 0.22% for /sup 231/Pa citrate and /sup 231/Pa fluoride, respectively; 0.77 and 0.11% for /sup 233/U (uranyl) nitrate and /sup 233/U dioxide, respectively; and 0.06 and 0.05% for /sup 237/Np citrate and /sup 237/Np nitrate, respectively. The absorption factors recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection for use in calculating annual limits on intake for occupationally exposed workers are: 0.1% for all compounds of Pa; 5 and 0.2% for soluble hexavalent and relatively insoluble tetravalent forms of U, respectively; and 1.0% for all chemical forms of Np. The experimental basis for these values is discussed.

We found that PaO is metallic and PaO2 is a Mott-Hubbard insulator. This is consistent with observations for the other actinide oxides. We discover that GGA and LDA incorrectly give metallic behavior for PaO2.     The speciation of protactinium(V) in hydrofluoric acid (HF) solutions was studied using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements were performed on an aqueous solution of 0.05 M protactinium(V) with various HF concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 27 M in order to probe the protactinium coordination sphere with respect to the identity and number of coordinating ligands. The resulting fits to the spectra suggest the presence of an eight-coordinate homoleptic fluoro complex in highly concentrated fluoride solutions (27 M), with equilibrium between seven- and eight-coordinate fluoro complexes at moderate acidities, and in more dilute solutions, results indicate that one water molecule is likely to replace a fluoride in the first coordination sphere, at a distance of 2.54-2.57 Å. Comparisons of this chemistry with group V metals, niobium and tantalum, are presented, and the potential implications for these results on the hydrolytic behavior of protactinium in aqueous systems are discussed.   13. Metabolism and gastrointestinal absorption of neptunium and protactinium in adult baboons

    The metabolism of neptunium and protactinium was studied in adult female baboons following intravenous injection and intragastric intubation. Immediately following intravenous injection (10/sup -1/ to 10/sup -10/ mg Np per kg body wt), neptunium cleared rapidly from blood, deposited primarily in the skeleton (54 +- 5%) and liver (3 +- 0.2%), and was excreted predominantly via urine (40 +- 3%). For the first year post injection, neptunium was retained with a biological half-time of approx.100 days in liver and 1.5 +- 0.2 yr in bone. In comparison, injected protactinium (10/sup -9/ mg/kg) was retained in blood in higher concentrations and was initially eliminated in urine to a lesser extent (6 +- 3%). In vivo measurements indicated that protactinium was retained in bone (65 +- 0.3%) with a half-time of 3.5 +- 0.6 yr. Differences in the physicochemical states of the neptunium or protactinium solutions injected did not alter the metabolic behavior of these nuclides. The gastrointestinal absorption value for neptunium in two fasted baboons, sacrificed at 1 day post administration, was determined to be 0.92 +- 0.04%. Of the total amount of neptunium absorbed, 52 +- 3% was retained in bone, 6 +- 2% was in liver, and 42 +- 0.1% was excreted in urine. A method was developed to estimate GI absorption values for both nuclides in baboons which were not sacrificed. Absorption values calculated by this method for neptunium and protactinium in fasted baboons were 1.8 +- 0.8% and 0.65 +- 0.01%, respectively.     The complexation of protactinium(V) by oxalate was studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), density functional theory (DFT) calculations, capillary electrophoresis coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (CE-ICP-MS) and solvent extraction. XAS measurements showed unambiguously the presence of a short single oxo-bond, and the deduced structure agrees with theoretical calculations. CE-ICP-MS results indicated the formation of a highly charged anionic complex. The formation constants of PaO(C(2)O(4))(+), PaO(C(2)O(4))(2)(-), and PaO(C(2)O(4))(3)(3-) were determined from solvent extraction data by using protactinium at tracer scale (C(Pa) < 10(-10) M). Complexation reactions of Pa(V) with oxalate were found to be exothermic with relatively high positive entropic variation. PMID:20883035

    In a thorium-fueled reactor, the conversion of /sup 232/Th to /sup 233/U involves the intermediate nuclide /sup 233/Pa. This isotope has a significant reactivity effect in any thorium reactor, especially one with an important epithermal flux component. The light water breeder reactor, operating in the Shippingport atomic power station, is a /sup 233/U-Th reactor with about half the power produced at energies above thermal. The reactivity effect of full-power equilibrium /sup 233/Pa has been inferred from critical position measurements and control element reactivity worths to be approximately 2.5% delta rho in this reactor, confirming calculational predictions.

    Lx2-32c is a novel taxane that has been demonstrated to have robust antitumor activity against different types of tumors including several paclitaxel-resistant neoplasms. Since the delivery vehicles for taxane, which include cremophor EL, are all associated with severe toxic effects, liposome-based Lx2-32c has been developed. In the present study, the pharmacokinetics, biodistribution, antitumor efficacy and safety characteristics of liposome-based Lx2-32c were explored and compared with those of cremophor-based Lx2-32c. The results showed that liposome-based Lx2-32c displayed similar antitumor effects to cremophor-based Lx2-32c, but with significantly lower bone marrow toxicity and cardiotoxicity, especially with regard to the low ratio of hypersensitivity reaction. In comparing these two delivery modalities, targeting was superior using the Lx2-32c liposome formulation; it achieved significantly higher uptake in tumor than in bone marrow and heart. Our data thus suggested that the Lx2-32c liposome was a novel alternative formulation with comparable antitumor efficacy and a superior safety profiles to cremophor-based Lx2-32c, which might be related to the improved pharmacokinetic and biodistribution characteristics. In conclusion, the Lx2-32c liposome could be a promising alternative formulation for further development. PMID:25506928

    The bremsstrahlung-induced fission cross section of /sup 232/Th was measured in the energy region of the giant dipole resonance. The data analysis, performed in terms of the bremsstrahlung spectrum calculated in the Davies-Bethe-Maximon approximation, shows that the photofission cross section measured at Livermore is more compatible with our results than the (..gamma..,f) data from Saclay.

    We have reported a relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) study on low-lying level structures of protactinium IV (Z =91) and uranium V (Z =92) ions. Excitation energies and electric dipole (E1) transition parameters (wavelengths, oscillator strengths, and transition rates) for these low-lying levels have been given. We have also investigated the influence of the transverse Breit and quantum electrodynamic (QED) contributions besides correlation effects on the level structure. A comparison has been made with a few available data for these ions in the literature.

    The present work describes the first structural studies of protactinium(V) in sulfuric and hydrofluoric acid media using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The results show unambiguously the absence of the trans-dioxo bond that characterizes the other early actinide elements such as U and Np. In concentrated sulfuric acid (13 M), Pa(V) is proved to exhibit a single oxo bond as postulated in the literature for species in more dilute media. In a 0.5 M HF medium, XANES and EXAFS spectra indicate the absence of any oxo bond: Pa(V) exists in the form of a pure fluoro complex. PMID:16323942

  2. Identification of transferrin as the main binding site for protactinium in rat blood serum.

    The distribution of 233Pa in rat serum at periods between 5 and 50 min after i.v. injection of a solution of protactinium chloride was studied by gel chromatography. Sequential analysis of sera on Sephacryl S-300 and DEAE-Sephadex showed that 233Pa was associated only with the transferrin fraction of the serum proteins. This finding was confirmed by iso-electric focusing electrophoresis. In the cytosol fractions prepared from the liver and kidneys of the 233Pa injected rats the nuclide was also shown to be protein bound. PMID:3583752

    Measurement of protactinium-231 (231Pa) in carbonates by thermal ionization mass spectroscopy yields 231Pa ages that are more than 10 times more precise than those determined by decay counting. Carbonates between 10 and 250,000 years old can now be dated with 231Pa methods. Barbados corals that have identical 231Pa and thorium-230 (230Th) ages indicate that the timing of sea level change over parts of the last glacial cycle is consistent with the predictions of the Astronomical Theory. Two Devils Hole calcite subsamples record identical 231Pa and 230Th ages, suggesting that the chronology of this climate record is accurate. PMID:9115200

    The minor isotope 232U may ultimately be used for detection or confirmation of uranium in a variety of applications. The primary advantage of 232 U as an indicator of the presence of enriched uranium is the plentiful and penetrating nature of the radiation emitted by its daughter radionuclide 208Tl. A possible drawback to measuring uranium via 232U is the relatively high uncertainty in 232U abundance both within and between material populations. An important step in assessing this problem is to ascertain what determines the 232U concentration within any particular sample of uranium. To this end, we here analyze the production and eventual enrichment of 232 U during fuel-cycle operations. The goal of this analysis is to allow approximate prediction of 232 U quantities, or at least some interpretation of the results of 232U measurements. We have found that 232U is produced via a number of pathways during reactor irradiation of uranium and is subsequently concentrated during the later enrichment of the uranium' s 235U Content.     The complete fusion reaction 40Ca+175Lu was studied at a beam energy of 5.1 MeV u-1. Evaporation residues recoiled from the target were separated from the primary beam by the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS and then implanted into the focal plane detection system. Based on the energy-position-time correlation measurement, neutron-deficient nuclei 208-213Ac, 212Pa and 211Th produced in this reaction were identified. Previously reported decay properties of the ground state in 212Pa were confirmed and improved values of 5.1_{-1.7}^{+5.1} ms and 8.250(20) MeV for the half-life and α-particle energy of 212Pa were obtained. No correlated decay chain arising from 211Pa was observed and an upper limit for the cross section of 211Pa was estimated.

    Measurement of protactinium-231 ({sup 231}Pa) in carbonates by thermal ionization mass spectroscopy yields {sup 231}Pa ages that are more than 10 times more precise than those determined by decay counting. Carbonates between 10 and 250,000 years old can now be dated with {sup 231}Pa methods. Barbados corals that have identical {sup 231}Pa and thorium-230 ({sup 230}Th) ages indicate that the timing of sea level change over parts of the last glacial cycle is consistent with the predictions of the Astronomical Theory. Two Devils Hole calcite subsamples record identical {sup 231}Pa and {sup 230}Th ages, suggesting that the chronology of this climate record is accurate. 24 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

    The spatial distributions of thorium fission reaction rate in a spallation neutron field of thick lead target bombarded by protons or deuterons with energy between 1.0 and 3.7 GeV were measured. Approximately a linear dependence of the thorium fission rate on the beam energy is observed. The mean fission cross section of 232Th <σ f > ≈ 123 mb and it does not depend on energy and type of the beam particles.

    The uses of a thermally reductive gasification process in conjunction with vitrification and cementation for the long-term disposal of low level radioactive materials have been investigated. gamma-ray spectroscopy was used for analysis of carrier-free protactinium-233 and neptunium-239 and a stoichiometric amount of cerium (observed cerium-141) subsequent to gasification and leaching, up to 48 days. High resolution ICP-MS was used to analyze the cerium, thorium, and uranium from 46 to 438 days of leaching. Leaching procedures followed the guidance of ASTM Procedure C 1220-92, Standard Test Method for Static Leaching of Monolithic Waste Forms for Disposal of Radioactive Waste. The combination of the thermally reductive pretreatment, vitrification and cementation produced a highly non-leachable form suitable for long-term disposal of cerium, thorium, protactinium, uranium, and neptunium.
