  1. Neutral ligand TIPA-based two 2D metal-organic frameworks: ultrahigh selectivity of C2H2/CH4 and efficient sensing and sorption of Cr(vi ).

    One neutral tripodal semi-rigidity ligand tri(4-imidazolylphenyl)amine (TIPA) with excellent hole-transfer nature, was selected as a linker to construct MOFs. Two two-dimensional (2D) microporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized solvothermally: [Ni(TIPA)(COO - ) 2 (H 2 O)]·2(DMF)2(H 2 O) (1) and [Cd(TIPA) 2 (ClO 4 - ) 2 ]·(DMF)3(H 2 O) (2). Compound 1 incorporated carboxylic groups into the channel and exhibited the high capacity of light hydrocarbons as well as the remarkable selectivity of C 2 H 2 /CH 4 . The value is in excess of 100 at room temperature, which is the highest value reported to date. Compound 2, as a cationic framework with high water stability, was not only applied as a sensor, displaying the ultrahigh sensitivity against Cr 2 O 7 2- with a detection limit as low as 8 ppb, but also possessed excellent Cr(vi) sorption with good repeatability in aqueous solution. This study provides an efficient strategy to design cationic MOFs for the selective separation of light hydrocarbons and the sensing and trapping of toxic chromate for the purification of water.

    Two isomorphous metal-organic frameworks, {[M(TIPA) (btec)½]H2O}n, [M = Co (1) or Zn (2)] were synthesized hydrothermally based on a semi-rigid N-center triangular ligand TIPA, where TIPA = tris(4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-phenyl)amine, H4btec = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid. Single crystal structural analyses show that complexes 1 and 2 are isostructural and both feature a twofold interpenetrated pcu topology. In 1 and 2, the btec4- ligand adopting μ2-η2:η1 and μ1-η1:η0 coordination modes connect adjacent dinuclear Co/Zn units to form a 1D straight polymeric chain. Then these chains arranged in parallel/parallel fashion were further extended to a 3D network by exo-tridentate ligand TIPA with μ2-κ2N:N‧ coordination mode. The magnetic property of 1 and the luminescent property of 2 were investigated. Furthermore, the structure and spectroscopic property of 2 were further investigated by DFT and TD-DFT calculations.

  3. Tau-independent Phase Analysis: A Novel Method for Accurately Determining Phase Shifts.

    Estimations of period and phase are essential in circadian biology. While many techniques exist for estimating period, comparatively few methods are available for estimating phase. Current approaches to analyzing phase often vary between studies and are sensitive to coincident changes in period and the stage of the circadian cycle at which the stimulus occurs. Here we propose a new technique, tau-independent phase analysis (TIPA), for quantifying phase shifts in multiple types of circadian time-course data. Through comprehensive simulations, we show that TIPA is both more accurate and more precise than the standard actogram approach. TIPA is computationally simple and therefore will enable accurate and reproducible quantification of phase shifts across multiple subfields of chronobiology.

  4. Evaluation of glyphosate resistance in Arabidopsis thaliana expressing an altered target site EPSPS

    Abstract BACKGROUND Glyphosate‐resistant goosegrass has recently evolved and is homozygous for the double mutant of EPSPS (T102I, P106S or TIPS). These same mutations combined with EPSPS overexpression, have been used to create transgenic glyphosate‐resistant crops. Arabidopsis thaliana (Wt EPSPS K i ∼ 0.5 μM) was engineered to express a variant AtEPSPS‐T102I, P106A (TIPA K i = 150 μM) to determine the resistance magnitude for a more potent variant EPSPS that might evolve in weeds. RESULTS Transgenic A. thaliana plants, homozygous for one, two or four copies of AtEPSPS‐TIPA, had resistance (IC50 values, R/S) as measured by seed production ranging from 4.3‐ to 16‐fold. Plants treated in reproductive stage were male sterile with a range of R/S from 10.1‐ to 40.6‐fold. A significant hormesis (∼ 63% gain in fresh weight) was observed for all genotypes when treated at the initiation of reproductive stage with 0.013 kg ha–1. AtEPSPS‐TIPA enzyme activity was proportional to copy number and correlated with resistance magnitude. CONCLUSIONS A. thaliana, as a model weed expressing one copy of AtEPSPS‐TIPA (300‐fold more resistant), had only 4.3‐fold resistance to glyphosate for seed production. Resistance behaved as a single dominant allele. Vegetative tissue resistance was 4.7‐fold greater than reproductive tissue resistance and was linear with gene copy number. © 2017 The Authors.   5. Organic Chemical Characterization and Mass Balance of a Hydraulically Fractured Well: From Fracturing Fluid to Produced Water over 405 Days.

    A long-term field study (405 days) of a hydraulically fractured well from the Niobrara Formation in the Denver-Julesburg Basin was completed. Characterization of organic chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing and their changes through time, from the preinjected fracturing fluid to the produced water, was conducted. The characterization consisted of a mass balance by dissolved organic carbon (DOC), volatile organic analysis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, and nonvolatile organic analysis by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. DOC decreased from 1500 mg/L in initial flowback to 200 mg/L in the final produced water. Only ∼11% of the injected DOC returned by the end of the study, with this 11% representing a maximum fraction returned since the formation itself contributes DOC. Furthermore, the majority of returning DOC was of the hydrophilic fraction (60-85%). Volatile organic compound analysis revealed substantial concentrations of individual BTEX compounds (0.1-11 mg/L) over the 405-day study. Nonvolatile organic compounds identified were polyethylene glycols (PEGs), polypropylene glycols (PPG), linear alkyl-ethoxylates, and triisopropanolamine (TIPA). The distribution of PEGs, PPGs, and TIPA and their ubiquitous presence in our samples and the literature illustrate their potential as organic tracers for treatment operations or in the event of an environmental spill.

  7. Modeling Interdependent and Periodic Real-World Action Sequences

    Mobile health applications, including those that track activities such as exercise, sleep, and diet, are becoming widely used. Accurately predicting human actions in the real world is essential for targeted recommendations that could improve our health and for personalization of these applications. However, making such predictions is extremely difficult due to the complexities of human behavior, which consists of a large number of potential actions that vary over time, depend on each other, and are periodic. Previous work has not jointly modeled these dynamics and has largely focused on item consumption patterns instead of broader types of behaviors such as eating, commuting or exercising. In this work, we develop a novel statistical model, called TIPAS, for Time-varying, Interdependent, and Periodic Action Sequences. Our approach is based on personalized, multivariate temporal point processes that model time-varying action propensities through a mixture of Gaussian intensities. Our model captures short-term and long-term periodic interdependencies between actions through Hawkes process-based self-excitations. We evaluate our approach on two activity logging datasets comprising 12 million real-world actions (e.g., eating, sleep, and exercise) taken by 20 thousand users over 17 months. We demonstrate that our approach allows us to make successful predictions of future user actions and their timing. Specifically, TIPAS improves predictions of actions, and their timing, over existing methods across multiple datasets by up to 156%, and up to 37%, respectively. Performance improvements are particularly large for relatively rare and periodic actions such as walking and biking, improving over baselines by up to 256%. This demonstrates that explicit modeling of dependencies and periodicities in real-world behavior enables successful predictions of future actions, with implications for modeling human behavior, app personalization, and targeting of health interventions.   8. Influence of ferrite phase in alite-calcium sulfoaluminate cements

    Since the energy crisis in 1970's, research on low energy cements with low CO2- emissions has been increasing. Numerous solutions have been investigated, and the goal of this original research is to create a viable hybrid cement with the components of both Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSAC), by forming a material that contains both alite and calcium sulfoaluminate clinker phases. Furthermore, this research focuses on keeping the cost of this material reasonable by reducing aluminum requirements through its substitution with iron. The aim of this work would produce a cement that can use large amounts of red mud, which is a plentiful waste material, in place of bauxite known as an expensive raw material. Modified Bogue equations were established and tested to formulate this novel cement with different amounts of ferrite, from 5% to 45% by weight. This was followed by the production of cement from reagent chemicals, and from industrial by-products as feedstocks (fly ash, red mud and slag). Hydration processes, as well as the mechanical properties, of these clinker compositions were studied, along with the addition of gypsum and the impact of a ferric iron complexing additive triisopropanolamine (TIPA). To summarize this research, the influence of the addition of 5-45% by weight of ferrite phase, was examined with the goal of introducing as much red mud as possible in the process without negatively attenuate the cement properties. Based on this PhD dissertation, the production of high-iron alite-calcium sulfoaluminateferrite cements was proven possible from the two sources of raw materials. The hydration processes and the mechanical properties seemed negatively affected by the addition of ferrite, as this phase was not hydrated entirely, even after 6 months of curing. The usage of TIPA counteracted this decline in strength by improving the ferrite hydration and increasing the optimum amount of gypsum required in each composition

    Liquid crystal display (LCD) industry is among the most rapidly growing and innovating industries in the world. Here continuously much effort is devoted towards developing and implementing new types of LCDs for various applications. Some types of LCDs require relatively high voltages for their operation. For example, bistable displays, in which an altering field at different frequencies is used for switching from clear to scattering states and vice versa, require electric fields at around 10 V/μm for operation. When operated at such high voltages an electrical breakdown is very likely to occur in the liquid crystal (LC) cell. This has been one of the limiting factors for such displays to reach market. In the present paper, we will report on the results of electrical breakdown investigations in high-voltage LC cells. An electrical breakdown in the cell is observed when current in the liquid crystal layer is above a specific threshold value. The threshold current is determined by conductivity of the liquid crystal as well as point defects, such as dust particles in LC layer, pinholes in coatings and electrode hillocks. In order to reduce the currents flowing through the liquid crystal layer several approaches, such as electrode patterning and adding of various buffer layers in the series with LC layer, have been tested. We demonstrate that the breakdown voltages can be significantly improved by means of adding insulating thin films.   10. Utilization of Network-Forming Block Copolymers and Ionomers in the Development of Novel Nanostructures and Responsive Media

    thermally-triggered shape-memory actuation, which results in a number of design possibilities including: (i) multiple-transition shape-memory in single a composite, (ii) complex actuation in laminates and, (iii) thermally-responsive electrical conductivity in microchannel-molded composites filled with liquid metal. These shape-memory TPECs can also be tuned to have different shape-memory response rates through the addition of an amorphous hydrocarbon tackifier, which serves to dilute the crystalline content without altering TPE concentration. The second set of functionalized TPEs examined are midblock-sulfonated block copolymers, which have substantial ion and water transport abilities, but are often restricted in thermal processability. The casting solvent-dependent morphology of a midblock sulfonated pentablock copolymer highlights the impact of solvent templating on resulting film domain structures. It is shown that film deposition from a miscible mixture of toluene and isopropanol (TIPA) leads to spherical sulfonated domains within a nonpolar matrix whereas deposition from neat tetrahydrofuran (THF) produces a combination of lamellar and hexagonally-pack cylinder nanostructures. These morphologies can both be converted to the anticipated equilibrium morphology, alternating lamellae, using THF vapor-annealing. Further, the morphology resulting from each solvent-casting approach impacts the rate and overall capacity at which films absorb water. Specifically, THF-cast copolymers swell faster and to a greater extent. However, some intrigue lies in the transformation of the TIPA-cast copolymer upon swelling, which yields disordered, but continuous, hydrophilic domains. The disordered morphology outperforms ordered analogues in solar simulation experiments indicating higher ion conductivity.

    Streptococcus suis (SS), an important pathogen for pigs, is not only considered as a zoonotic agent for humans, but is also recognized as a major reservoir of antimicrobial resistance contributing to the spread of resistance genes to other pathogenic Streptococcus species. In addition to serotype 2 (SS2), serotype 9 (SS9) is another prevalent serotype isolated from diseased pigs. Although many SS strains have been sequenced, the complete genome of a non-SS2 virulent strain has been unavailable to date. Here, we report the complete genome of GZ0565, a virulent strain of SS9, isolated from a pig with meningitis. Comparative genomic analysis revealed five new putative virulence or antimicrobial resistance-associated genes in strain GZ0565 but not in SS2 virulent strains. These five genes encode a putative triacylglycerol lipase, a TipAS antibiotic-recognition domain protein, a putative TetR family transcriptional repressor, a protein containing a LPXTG domain and a G5 domain, and a type VII secretion system (T7SS) putative substrate (EsxA), respectively. Western blot analysis showed that strain GZ0565 can secrete EsxA. We generated an esxA deletion mutant and showed that EsxA contributes to SS virulence in a mouse infection model. Additionally, the antibiotic resistance gene vanZ SS was identified and expression of vanZ SS conferred resistance to teicoplanin and dalbavancin in Streptococcus agalactiae. We believe this is the first experimental demonstration of the existence of the T7SS putative substrate EsxA and its contribution to bacterial virulence in SS. Together, our results contribute to further understanding of the virulence and antimicrobial resistance characteristics of SS. Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    The experimental equipment used in the work at the horizontal reactor channels is listed. Diagrams of the utilization of the nominal reactor power and core loading are given, the reactivity fractions of the separate fuel assemblies are detonated, together with the diagram of reactivity versus burnup. Reactor channels and space used for sample irradiation and isotope production are described, and the total number of irradiations is given. Results of the measurements connected with the routine reactor operation are quoted, namely: analysis of water purity in the primary circuit, analysis of the work of the ion exchanger and mechanical filter, andmore » analysis of air activity in the special ventilation system. Data are given concerning radiation protection of personnel, including individual monitoring. Leak testing of the fuel elements is discussed.   13. Sail-Type Wind Turbine for Autonomous Power Supplay: Possible Use in Latvia

    Under the conditions of continuous increase in the energy consumption, sharply rising prices of basic energy products (gas, oil, coal), deterioration of environment, etc., it is of vital importance to develop methods and techniques for heat and power generation from renewables. The paper considers the possibility to use a sail-type wind turbine for autonomous power supply in Latvia, taking into account its climatic conditions. The authors discuss the problems of developing a turbine of the type that would operate efficiently at low winds, being primarily designed to supply power to small buildings and farms distant from centralized electricity networks. The authors consider aerodynamic characteristics of such a turbine and the dependence of the thrust moment of its pilot model on the airflow rate at different angles of attack. The pilot model with a changeable blade shape has been tested and shows a good performance. Darbs veltīts vienam no atjaunojamo enerģiju veidiem - vēja enerģijai, analizētas tās izmantošanas iespējas. Vispirms īsi raksturota vēja enerģijas izmantošana pasaulē, kā arī vērtētas izmantošanas perspektīvas no inženiertehniskā un klimatisko apstākļu viedokļa. Turpinājumā raksturota situācija Latvijā, t. sk., arī vēja potenciāla pieejamība dažādos reģionos, kā arī vēja enerģijas izmantošanas efektivitāti raksturojošie lielumi. Konstatējot problēmu, rast vēja turbīnu risinājumus Latvijas apstākļiem ar maziem vidējiem vēja ātrumiem, izveidots buras tipa turbīnas modelis. Šī modeļa raksturlielumu izpēte veikta vēja tunelī Karagandas universitātē, konstatējot relatīvi labus efektivitātes rādītājus tiešai un pretējai vēja plūsmai. Izmantojot mērījumu rezultātus, ierosināti sistēmas uzlabojumi, kurus plānots pētīt turpmāk. Šādas sistēmas potenciāli var rast lietojumu tur, kur nepieciešami autonomi enerģijas avoti.

  14. Investigation Into the Accuracy of 3D Surface Roughness Characteristics

    The existing standards for surface roughness cover only two dimensions, while in reality this is three-dimensional (3D). In particular, the 3D surface roughness parameters are important for solving the contact surface mechanics problems as related to the accuracy of 3D surface roughness characteristics. One of the most important factors for determination of 3D characteristics is the number of data points (NDP) on the x- and y-axes (i.e. in cut-off length). The NDP has a profound effect on the accuracy of measurement results, measuring time and volume of the output data (especially along the y-axis, where the NDP is identical to the number of parallel profiles). At a too small NDP the results will be incorrect and with too broad scatter, while a too large NDP - though not enlarging the range of basic information - considerably increases the measuring time. Therefore, the aim of the work was to find the optimal NDP for such surface processing methods as grinding, spark erosion and shot methods of surface treatment. Eksistējošie virsmas raupjuma standarti apskata virsmas raupjumu tikai divās dimensijās. Tomēr reālais virsmas raupjums pēc savas dabas ir trīsdimensiju (3D) objekts. Līdz ar to virsmas raupjums ir jāraksturo ar 3D parametriem. Un no šo parametru noteikšanas precizitātes ir atkarīgi tālākie virsmas aprēķini, piemēram, virsmu kontaktēšanās process. Viens no svarīgākajiem faktoriem, raksturojot virsmas raupjumu 3D, pielietojot kontakta tipa mēriekārtas, ir datu punktu skaits pa abām mērīšanas asīm x un y. Ar datu punktu skaitu mēs saprotam to skaitu mērīšanas bāzes garumā. Datu punktu skaits būtiski ietekmē sagaidāmo mērījumu rezultātu precizitāti, mērīšanai nepieciešamo laiku un izejas datu faila izmērus (sevišķi y-ass virzienā, kur katrs datu punkts ir paralēls profils).   15. Multi-Objective Optimization of Transmission Lines / Elektropārvades Līnijas Daudzkriteriālā Optimizācija

    Introduction of new advanced electrical connections into a transmission grid reduces the capacity of existing overhead lines (OHLs). At the same time, designing & building of new OHLs and substations involves considerable technical, environmental and economical problems. The authors propose a concept of the multi-objective optimization for selection of transmission line routes, towers (their type, placement and geometry), of conductors, insulators, dampers, earthing and lightning protection systems, span lengths, etc.. The optimization is organized in five stages. At the first and second stages a search for optimum solutions is performed along with determination of the main impacting factors. The next two stages present a two-objective optimization based on Pareto's approach. At the last stage (exemplified by a case study), the probability of the restriction removal conditions is assessed, and preventive measures are identified. The presented approach uses a real line design and is intended for minimizing the total invested capital and maximizing the net present value. In the framework of this approach 20 alternatives have been elaborated, which can successfully be applied in the cases described in the paper.
