  2. Taste of Super-Dwarf Rice Cultured in Space

    The interest of food production for lunar base and manned Mars mission has increased recently. So far, plants cultured long duration in space were leafy vegetables, arabidopsis, wheat, barley and so on. Although rice is a staple food for most of the world, research on rice cultivation in space has not been done much. Rice grains are nutrient-rich with carbohydrate, protein and dietary fiber. Moreover, rice is a high yield crop and harvested grains have a long shelf life. Rice symbolizes the rice-eating culture of Japan, is extremely useful as a specific cultured plant candidate of Japan in space. In the previous report, 'Kozo-no-sumika' found from seedlings in raising of seedling was introduced as a super-dwarf rice to culture in space. Considering this rice as food in space, we investigate the taste characteristics of this rice. At present, waxy 'Kozo-no-sumika' and nonwaxy 'Hosetsu dwarf' of super-dwarf rice and 'Nipponbare' of previous standard rice for sensory test are cultured in paddy field. Hereafter, we will harvest rice, investigate yield, evaluate taste.

  3. New criteria for the characterization of traditional East Asian papers.

    We report a pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) method capable of analyzing traditional East Asian papers. The method proposed is based on rapid and easy single step Py-GC/MS analysis that can be carried out with a minimum amount of matter, in the few microgram range. Three reference papers manufactured from kozo (Broussonetia kazinoki Siebold & Zucc.), mitsumata (Edgeworthia chrysantha Lindl.), and gampi (Wikstroemia sikokiana Franch. & Sav.) with the traditional hand paper making processes were examined. The method allows discrimination between terpenic and steroid compounds, which were revealed as chemical markers of origin of the plant fibers. Each paper investigated was found to have characteristic pyrolysis fingerprints that were unique to the traditional handmade paper, demonstrating the potential for differentiation of these biochemical components of fiber plants on East Asian papers towards identification and conservation of cultural heritage. The investigation on Py-GC/MS was extended to liquid extraction followed by GC/MS analysis to characterize the biochemical components of fiber plants. The main contribution of this study is to provide molecular criteria for discriminating plant species used for traditional East Asian hand papermaking. Py-GC/MS complements efficiently microscope identification especially for adverse cases. A case study of archaeological Chinese paper painting artefacts was thereafter successfully investigated to address informative potential and efficiency of the criteria of identification on ancient and degraded East Asian paperworks.

  4. The Nishino Breathing Method and Ki-energy (Life-energy): A Challenge to Traditional Scientific Thinking.

    The breathing method, which was developed and is being taught by Kozo Nishino, a Japanese Ki-expert, is for raising the levels of Ki-energy (life-energy or the vitality) of an individual. It is neither a therapy nor a healing technique. However, many of his students have experienced an improvement in their health, and in some cases, they were able to overcome health problems by themselves. Since this is an interesting subject from the standpoint of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), we have been collaborating with Nishino to conduct a scientific investigation of his Ki-energy. We found that Nishino's Ki-energy can inhibit cell division of cancer cells, protect isolated mitochondria from heat deterioration and reduce lipid peroxidation in heat-treated mitochondria. Although Ki-energy may consist of several different energy forms, we found that at least one of them is near-infrared radiation between the wavelength range of 0.8 and 2.7 microm. Another interesting observation at his school is the Taiki-practice (paired Ki-practice). During this practice, Nishino can 'move' his students without any physical contact. Many of them run, jump or roll on the floor when they receive his Ki-energy. We studied this and propose that 'information' is conveyed through the air between two individuals by Ki-energy. This may be called a five sense-independent, life-to-life communication by Ki. All of our results suggest that we should re-evaluate the Cartesian dualism (separation of mind and body) which has been a fundamental principle of modern science for the past three centuries.

    -up is a second vital task. As system design is dependent on material development, there is a critical need to study the key issues in developing high performance superconducting materials. The emphases of MEM07 were The mechanical properties of superconductors including the influence of stress and strain on the critical current of practical conductors including YBCO and ReBCO coated conductors, BSCCO tapes, MgB2 wires and Nb3Sn filamentary conductors. The intrinsic strain effects on critical current density in Nb3Sn, YBCO, BSCCO and MgB2. Recent advances in critical current, the mechanical properties and the reduction in ac losses of HTS tapes and wires. The compositional and microstructural dependence of E-J characteristics and explanations based on flux pinning, grain boundary weak-links and other mechanisms. Standardized test-methods: international cooperative research work to establish test methods for assessing the mechano-electromagnetic properties of superconductors based on the activities of IEC/TC90 and VAMAS/TWA-16. More than 60 researchers from more than 12 countries attended the MEM07 workshop, and about 40 presentations were made. A small selection of papers (15) from the workshop are included in this special issue of Superconductor Science and Technology. Taken together with papers published at earlier MEM meetings, this issue provides an updated view of some of the current state-of-the-art research in the mechano-electromagnetic properties of composite superconductors. The workshop was organized under the activities of the NEDO Grant Project (Applied Superconductivity, 2004EA004) and VAMAS/TWA-16. The meeting was organized by a committee composed of David Larbalestier (Conference Chair) aided by MEM05 and MEM06 Conference Chairs Kozo Osamura (Research Institute for Applied Sciences, Kyoto, Japan), Damian Hampshire (Durham University, UK) and Arman Nyilas (CEME).     stresses, electromagnetic force, and mechanical and thermal cycling. • Mechanical properties: tensile and compressive properties, fatigue characteristics and fracture behaviour. • Thermal properties: thermal conductivity, thermal dilatation and thermal strain. • Modelling: prediction of critical current and mechanical properties of composite superconductors through statistical analysis, finite element analysis, etc. • Test methods: international cooperative research work to establish test methods for assessing mechano-electromagnetic properties based on the activity of VAMAS/TWA-16. This discussion took place with respect to three types of composites: • MFC (multifilamentary composite): BSCCO, MgB2, Nb-Ti, Nb3Sn and Nb3Al. • CCC (coated conductor composite): YBCO and ReBCO. • BCC (bulk crystal composite): YBCO and ReBCO. More than 55 researchers attended the MEM03 workshop, coming from eight different countries. A total of 42 papers were presented. In this special issue of Superconductor Science and Technology selected papers have been included that are concerned with the comprehensive scientific research subjects mentioned above. The aim of this issue is to provide a snapshot of some of the current state-of-the-art research and to promote further research into the mechano-electromagnetic properties of composite superconductors. The workshop was organized under the activities of NEDO technology quest and VAMAS/TWA-16.
