Report on FY15 alloy 617 code rules development

Due to its strength at very high temperatures, up to 950°C (1742°F), Alloy 617 is the reference construction material for structural components that operate at or near the outlet temperature of the very high temperature gas-cooled reactors. However, the current rules in the ASME Section III, Division 5 Subsection HB, Subpart B for the evaluation of strain limits and creep-fatigue damage using simplified methods based on elastic analysis have been deemed inappropriate for Alloy 617 at temperatures above 650°C (1200°F) (Corum and Brass, Proceedings of ASME 1991 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference, PVP-Vol. 215, p.147, ASME, NY, 1991). The rationalemore » for this exclusion is that at higher temperatures it is not feasible to decouple plasticity and creep, which is the basis for the current simplified rules. This temperature, 650°C (1200°F), is well below the temperature range of interest for this material for the high temperature gas-cooled reactors and the very high temperature gas-cooled reactors. The only current alternative is, thus, a full inelastic analysis requiring sophisticated material models that have not yet been formulated and verified. To address these issues, proposed code rules have been developed which are based on the use of elastic-perfectly plastic (EPP) analysis methods applicable to very high temperatures. The proposed rules for strain limits and creep-fatigue evaluation were initially documented in the technical literature (Carter, Jetter and Sham, Proceedings of ASME 2012 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference, papers PVP 2012 28082 and PVP 2012 28083, ASME, NY, 2012), and have been recently revised to incorporate comments and simplify their application. Background documents have been developed for these two code cases to support the ASME Code committee approval process. The principal objectives of the DM1200 melter testing were to determine the achievable glass production rates for simulated HLW C-106/AY-102 feed; determine the effect of bubbling rate on production rate; characterize melter off-gas emissions; characterize the performance of the prototypical off-gas system components as well as their integrated performance; characterize the feed, glass product, and off-gas effluents; and to perform pre- and post test inspections of system components.

This study was conducted to determine the rate of intramolecular degenerate rearrangement of cyclopentene (CP), presumably via reversible conversion to vinylcyclopropane (VCP). Cyclopentene-3-{sup 13}C was synthesized and heated to 1,200 K in a single-pulse shock tube and then analyzed by {sup 13}C NMR to ascertain the extent of migration of the {sup 13}C label to the 4-position. The very small amounts of migration observed were consistent with log k(CP {yields} VCP) = 15.7 {minus} (16,000/T). A survey was made of portions of the chromium-cobalt-nickel-molybdenum quaternary system at 1,200 degrees c by means of microscopic and x-ray diffraction studies. Since the face-centered cubic (alpha) solid solutions form the matrix of almost all practically useful high-temperature alloys, the solid solubility limits of the quaternary alpha phase were determined up to 20 percent molybdenum. The component cobalt-nickel-molybdenum, chromium-cobalt-molybdenum, and chromium-nickel-molybdenum ternary systems were also studied. The survey of these systems was confined to the determination of the boundaries of the face-centered cubic (alpha) solid solutions and of the phases coexisting with alpha at 1,200 degrees c.

Responses of Fuji Imaging Plates (IPs) to proton have been measured in the range 1-200 MeV. Mono-energetic protons were produced with the 15 MV ALTO-Tandem accelerator of the Institute of Nuclear Physics (Orsay, France) and, at higher energies, with the 200-MeV isochronous cyclotron of the Institut Curie—Centre de Protonthérapie d'Orsay (Orsay, France). The experimental setups are described and the measured photo-stimulated luminescence responses for MS, SR, and TR IPs are presented and compared to existing data. For the interpretation of the results, a sensitivity model based on the Monte Carlo GEANT4 code has been developed. It enables the calculation of the response functions in a large energy range, from 0.1 to 200 MeV. Finally, we show that our model reproduces accurately the response of more complex detectors, i.e., stack of high-Z filters and IPs, which could be of great interest for diagnostics of Petawatt laser accelerated particles.

Thirty percent of the bolometric luminosity of star-forming galaxies is emitted in the wavelength range between 912 and 1200 Å. This wavelength range carries information about the stellar mass distribution and the star formation rate of the newly formed populations of massive (M > 8 M_sun) stars in these galaxies, and about the leakage of Lyman-continuum photons from these galaxies. This is also the wavelength range where the reddening curve peaks, and where our understanding of the reddening curve is the most fragmentary. We present preliminary results from a spectroscopic study aimed to characterize the reddening curve below 1200 Å. Our project is based on the analysis of archival HUT (830-1850 Å), FUSE (905-1187 Å), IUE (1150-3200 Å), and HST (1200-3200 Å) data of a sample of 70 low-redshift (z<0.1) star-forming galaxies, using synthetic spectra of stellar populations plus the ISM. The stellar population and nebula models were generated with STARBURST99 and CLOUDY, respectively. This work is supported by NASA J1401.

Two phases have been completed, of a program whose ultimate objective is the development of an alkali metal resistant, thermal shock resistant, leak-tight, and neutron radiation resistant ceramic-to-metal seal capable of operation at 1200 C for three to five years. The first phase involved the screening of platinum-base, vanadium-base and vanadium-niobium base brazes for the joining of Cb-1Zr or T-111 alloys to high purity alumina. The second phase involved studies of the performance of sealed capsule samples during 5000-hour aging tests at 800, 1000, and 1200 C in high vacuum. Sealed capsules which were made using pure vanadium braze, and were brazed at 1850 C for one minute, survived 64 thermal cycles to 1200 C at the heating/cooling rate of 100 C/minute. Vanadium braze samples survived 5000-hour aging tests at 800, 1000, and 1200 C. One thermally cycled sample survived a subsequent 5000-hour aging period at 1000 C, but another, at 1200 C, did not survive. It was concluded that a pure vanadium braze used to bond high purity alumina to Cb-1Zr alloy is the best of the systems studied, but that additional studies must be performed to establish its service temperature limitations for the desired three to five years' service.

Tumor marker measurements are becoming essential for prognosis and follow-up of patients in oncology. In this context, we aimed to compare a new analyzer, Lumipulse(®) G1200 (Fujirebio group, distributed in Europe by the Innogenetics group) with Kryptor(®) (Thermo Fisher Scientific B.R.A.H.M.S, Asnières, France) and Modular(®) Elecsys E170 (Roche Diagnostics, Meylan, France) for the measurement of seven tumor markers: PSA, AFP, CEA, CA 15-3, CA 125, CA 19-9, and Cyfra 21-1. A total of 471 serum samples from patients with elevated tumor markers and 100 serum from healthy patients were analyzed with Lumipulse(®) G1200 and either Kryptor(®) (for AFP) or Modular(®) (for the six other markers). The good precision of Lumipulse(®) G1200 assays was confirmed with CVs < 2.5% and < 5.0%, obtained, respectively, for within-run imprecision and intermediate imprecision (except for Cyfra 21-1: CV < 13%). For all markers, Lumipulse results were well correlated with Modular or Kryptor results (r ≥ 0.94). Concordance of results interpretation was > 95% and tumor marker kinetics were all similar. We confirmed the analytical performances of Lumipulse(®) tumor marker assays except for the CYFRA 21-1 assay for which performances were poor in this study. We noticed a few discrepancies for the CEA assay. Besides, values obtained for CA 19-9 were higher with Lumipulse leading to a bias (slope = 1.5). But for the four other tumor markers assays (PSA, AFP, CA 125, CA 15-3), the results were directly transferable between Lumipulse and Kryptor or Modular, thus facilitating an eventual substitution of one system by another. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Thermoluminescence of α-Al2O3:C,Mg annealed at 1200 °C

Stimulated luminescence in α-Al2O3:C,Mg has thus far been studied for samples annealed at temperature no higher than 900 °C as can be seen by an examination of the literature. We report the thermoluminescence (TL) features of α-Al2O3:C,Mg annealed at 1200 °C. A glow curve measured at 1 °C/s from the samples annealed at 1200 °C shows eight peaks at 54, 80, 102, 173, 238, 290, 330 and 387 °C. Kinetic analyses show that the peak at 54 °C follows general order kinetics (b = 1.3) whereas the rest follow first order kinetics. The values of the activation energy of the peaks are between 0.77 eV and 1.90 eV and the frequency factors are of the order of 1010-1014 s-1. The intensity of the peaks at 54, 80, 102 and 173 °C increase with heating rate whereas those of the peaks at 238 and 290 °C decrease with heating rate. The decrease of intensity of the peaks at 238 and 290 °C with heating rate is due to thermal quenching whereas the increase of intensity of the peaks with heating rate indicates an inverse thermal-quenching-like behaviour. Interestingly this behaviour is observed only after annealing at 1200 °C. The activation energy for thermal quenching as calculated using the peaks at 238 and 290 °C are (1.02 ± 0.16) eV and (1.33 ± 0.15) eV respectively. Regarding the dosimetric features, the dose response of the peaks at 54, 80 and 102 °C are sublinear within 1-10 Gy and the peak at 54 °C saturates above 6 Gy. In contrast, the response of the peak at 173 °C is sublinear with 1-4 Gy and superlinear between 4 and 10 Gy. The peaks are found to fade at different rates and the rate of fading is also affected by annealing.

Within the range of strain rates examined, 10(exp -3) to 10(exp -9) s(exp -1), the strength of the N-enriched NiAl was greater than that of a simple 15 micron grain size polycrystalline, binary NiAl alloy. For the most part the overall improvement in strength is ascribed to the fine grain size of the N-doped NiAl rather than the alloy chemistry; however, the alloy displayed a complex behavior exhibiting both weakening effects as well as strengthening ones.

Research on infrared radiation characteristics of Pyromark1200 high-temperature coating

Pyromark 1200 (Tempil Co, USA), which is a type of high-temperature high-emissivity coating, is silicon-based with good thermal radiation performance. Its stably working condition is at the temperature range 589~922 K thus a wide range of applications in industrial, scientific research, aviation, aerospace and other fields. Infrared emissivity is one of the most important factors in infrared radiation characteristics. Data on infrared spectral emissivity of Pyromark 1200 is in shortage, as well as the reports on its infrared radiation characteristics affected by its spray painting process, microstructure and thermal process. The results of this research show that: (1) The coating film critical thickness on the metal base is 10μm according to comparison among different types of spray painting process, coating film thickness, microstructure, which would influence the infrared radiation characteristics of Pyromark 1200 coating. The infrared spectral emissivity will attenuate when the coating film thickness is lower or much higher than that. (2) Through measurements, the normal infrared radiation characteristics is analyzed within the range at the temperature range 573~873 K under normal atmospheric conditions, and the total infrared spectral emissivity of Pyromark 1200 coating is higher than 0.93 in the 3~14 μm wavelength range. (3) The result of 72-hour aging test at the temperature 673 K which studied the effect of thermal processes on the infrared radiation characteristics of the coating shows that the infrared spectral emissivity variation range is approximately 0.01 indicating that Pyromark 1200 coating is with good stability. Compared with Nextel Velvet Coating (N-V-C) which is widely used in optics field, Pyromark 1200 high-temperature coating has a higher applicable temperature and is more suitable for spraying on the material surface which is in long-term operation under high temperature work conditions and requires high infrared spectral emissivity.

The manufacturing procedure of a φ1070mm in diameter F/1.5 ellipsoid mirror is introduced in detail. For testing the rough-ground surface, guiding shaping and fine grinding, a three dimension X-θ-Z profilometer is developed, the instrument measures surface profiles with 1μm accuracy and the biggest mirror being tested is φ1200mm in diameter. During polishing and fine figuring, we chose null test by null corrector with point source at infinity, the designed null corrector includes two piece of lenses and the designed residual wave front aberration is less than 0.008λ(λ=0.6328μm)PV. For avoiding the influence of gravity deformation during polishing and testing, a kind of support system with multipoint unequal support force is developed by applying FEA-based optimization. The mirror was finally figured to the shape accuracy of 0.016λRMS.

It is widely thought that the oligomer compounds [RMYR]n (M-group 13, Y-group 15 element) should obey the isolated square rule found for the boron-nitrogen cages. In contrast to these expectations, the needle-shaped oligomers, which violate this rule, are more stable compared to the cage (fullerene-like) oligomers for all MY pairs (M = B, Al, Ga, In; Y = N, P, As). The stability of the needle-shaped clusters improves with increasing oligomerization degree. Thus, the isolated square rule, which is analogous to the isolated pentagon rule widely applied for fullerenes, should not serve as the basis for searches for the most stable structures of the inorganic oligomers. Generation of the needle-shaped oligomers from the group 13 and 15 hydrides is thermodynamically favorable. A synthesis of novel inorganic polymers, formed by fusion of trimeric M3Y3 rings, is expected to be viable.

Indium oxide (InO{sub 1.5}) stabilized zirconia (InSZ) is an attractive material as electrolyte, or electrode, in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), and as corrosion resistant top coat in thermal barrier coatings. However, little is known about the phase stability of cubic InSZ at temperatures that simulate the conditions in an operating SOFC or turbine. This article provides an investigation of the phase stability and phase transformations in cubic InSZ after heat treatments at 800, 1000, and 1200 °C for periods up to 2000 h. The results revealed that cubic InSZ is not stable during annealing at 1000 and 1200 °C,more » owing to a fast destabilization of the initial cubic phase to tetragonal, and eventually to monoclinic (c → t → m). The c → t → m transition in InSZ is intimately associated with the indium volatilization. On the other hand, cubic InSZ remained stable for 2000 h at 800 °C, although the partial formation of the tetragonal phase was observed along with a 0.25% contraction in the unit cell volume of the cubic phase, caused by short-range ordering. XD synthesis, powder blending, and hot pressing techniques have been utilized to produce NiAl composites containing 4, 7.5, 15, and 25 vol pct alumina whiskers and hybrid composite materials with 15 vol pct Al2O3 + 10 or 20 vol pct, nominally 1 micron TiB2 particles. The resistance to slow plastic flow was determined at 1200 and 1300 K via compression testing in air under constant velocity conditions. The stress-strain behavior of the intermetallic composites depended on the fraction of second phases where the 4 and 7.5 percent Al2O3 materials flowed at a nominally constant stress after about 2 percent deformation, while all the other composites exhibited diffuse yielding followed by strain softening. The flow stress-strain rate properties increased with volume fraction of Al2O3 whiskers except for the 4 and 7.5 percent materials, which had similar strengths. The hybrid composite NiAl + 15Al2O3 + 10TiB2 was substantially stronger than the materials simply containing alumina. Deformation in these composites can be described by the Kelly and Street model of creep in perfectly bonded, rigid, discontinuous fiber materials.

Aldo-keto reductases (AKRs) comprise a superfamily of proteins involved in the reduction and oxidation of biogenic and xenobiotic carbonyls. In humans, at least 15 AKR superfamily members have been identified so far. One of these is a newly identified gene locus, AKR1B15, which clusters on chromosome 7 with the other human AKR1B subfamily members (i.e. AKR1B1 and AKR1B10). We show that alternative splicing of the AKR1B15 gene transcript gives rise to two protein isoforms with different N termini: AKR1B15.1 is a 316-amino acid protein with 91% amino acid identity to AKR1B10; AKR1B15.2 has a prolonged N terminus and consists of 344 amino acid residues. The two gene products differ in their expression level, subcellular localization, and activity. In contrast with other AKR enzymes, which are mostly cytosolic, AKR1B15.1 co-localizes with the mitochondria. Kinetic studies show that AKR1B15.1 is predominantly a reductive enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of androgens and estrogens with high positional selectivity (17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity) as well as 3-keto-acyl-CoA conjugates and exhibits strong cofactor selectivity toward NADP(H). In accordance with its substrate spectrum, the enzyme is expressed at the highest levels in steroid-sensitive tissues, namely placenta, testis, and adipose tissue. Placental and adipose expression could be reproduced in the BeWo and SGBS cell lines, respectively. In contrast, AKR1B15.2 localizes to the cytosol and displays no enzymatic activity with the substrates tested. Collectively, these results demonstrate the existence of a novel catalytically active AKR, which is associated with mitochondria and expressed mainly in steroid-sensitive tissues. PMID:25577493

Calcitriol (1,25 dihydroxycholecalciferol) has significant antitumor activity in vitro and in vivo in a number of tumor model systems. We developed a system for isolation of fresh endothelial cells from tumors and Matrigel environments which demonstrate that CYP24, the catabolic enzyme involved in vitamin D signaling, is epigenetically silenced selectively in tumor-derived endothelial cells (TDEC). TDEC maintain phenotypic characteristics which are distinct from endothelial cells isolated from normal tissues and from Matrigel plugs (MDEC). In TDEC, calcitriol induces G0/G1 arrest, modulates p27 and p21, and induces apoptotic cell death and decreases P-Erk and P-Akt. In contrast, endothelial cells isolated from normal tissues and MDEC are unresponsive to calcitriol-mediated anti-proliferative effects despite intact signaling through the vitamin D receptor (VDR). In TDEC, which is sensitive to calcitriol, the CYP24 promoter is hypermethylated in two CpG island regions located at the 5′end; this hypermethylation may contribute to gene silencing of CYP24. The extent of methylation in these two regions is significantly less in MDEC. Lastly, treatment of TDEC with a DNA methyltransferase inhibitor restores calcitriol-mediated induction of CYP24 and resistance to calcitriol. These data suggest that epigenetic silencing of CYP24 modulates cellular responses to calcitriol. PMID:20304059

Multilayer heat-resistant ion-plasma coatings for protecting the parts of the hot duct of gas-turbine engines produced from refractory nickel alloys based on VKNA intermetallics from high-temperature oxidation are considered. Coatings of the Ni - Cr - Al (Ta, Re, Hf, Y) + Al - Ni - Y systems are tested for high-temperature strength at 1200 and 1250°C. Metallographic and microscopic x-ray spectrum analyses of the structure and composition of the coatings in the initial condition and after the testing are performed. The effect of protective coatings of the Ni - Cr - Al - Hf + Al - Ni - Y systems on the long-term strength of alloys VKNA-1V and VKNA-25 at 1200°C is studied.
