    As part of a continuing study to understand the relationship between valleys and highland resurfacing through geologic mapping, we are continuing to map seven MTM quads in portions of the Margaritifer, Arabia, and Noachis Terrae. Results from this mapping will also help constrain the role and extent of past water in the region. The MTMs are grouped in two different areas: a 4-quadrangle area (-20002, -20007, -25002, -25007) and an L-shaped area (-15017, -20017, -20022) within the region [1-5]. This abstract focuses on the geologic units and history from mapping in the 4-quadrangle area, but includes a brief update on the L-shaped map area.

    As part of a continuing study to understand the relationship between valleys and highland resurfacing through geologic mapping, the authors are continuing to map seven 1:500,000-scale MTM quads in portions of the Margaritifer, Arabia, and Noachis Terrae. Results from this mapping will also help constrain the role and extent of past water in the region. The MTMs are grouped in two different areas within the region and compliment previous mapping in adjacent areas. Three western quads focus on Jones crater and the Himera, Samara, and Loire Valles systems. This abstract focuses on the four eastern quads wherein a large, ancient impact structure, Noachis basin, is flanked on its south and east by a series of valley networks. A solitary valley drains this basin and stretches north-northeast for approximately 450 km, transporting materials into Arabia Terra. Pertinent raster and vector data have been imported and registered using ESRI's ArcMap GIS software. To inspect and quantify stratigraphic relations, crater counts are being compiled in ESRI's ArcView GIS software to make use of crater counting tools specifically developed for planetary mappers. New datasets from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter including 4 CTX images, 31 CRISM multi-spectral pushbroom images, and 4 HiRISE images were incorporated into the project during the third year. The CRISM dataset uses summary parameters with thresholds to select targets for the high-resolution datasets. The befit for mappers is the extensive coverage and general compositional information. Results of a cursory analysis show strong mafic absorptions on the floors of Peta crater and Noachis basin. LCP absorptions occur more often than olivine, however, olivine tends to be denser than both pyroxenes. Olivine and HCP mat indicate relatively younger rocks, which is supported by the occurrence of wrinkle ridges associated with high olivine and HCP absorptions in the Peta crater and Noachis basin floors.

  19. An optimal user-interface for EPIMS database conversions and SSQ 25002 EEE parts screening

    The Electrical, Electronic, and Electromechanical (EEE) Parts Information Management System (EPIMS) database was selected by the International Space Station Parts Control Board for providing parts information to NASA managers and contractors. Parts data is transferred to the EPIMS database by converting parts list data to the EP1MS Data Exchange File Format. In general, parts list information received from contractors and suppliers does not convert directly into the EPIMS Data Exchange File Format. Often parts lists use different variable and record field assignments. Many of the EPES variables are not defined in the parts lists received. The objective of this work was to develop an automated system for translating parts lists into the EPIMS Data Exchange File Format for upload into the EPIMS database. Once EEE parts information has been transferred to the EPIMS database it is necessary to screen parts data in accordance with the provisions of the SSQ 25002 Supplemental List of Qualified Electrical, Electronic, and Electromechanical Parts, Manufacturers, and Laboratories (QEPM&L). The SSQ 2S002 standards are used to identify parts which satisfy the requirements for spacecraft applications. An additional objective for this work was to develop an automated system which would screen EEE parts information against the SSQ 2S002 to inform managers of the qualification status of parts used in spacecraft applications. The EPIMS Database Conversion and SSQ 25002 User Interfaces are designed to interface through the World-Wide-Web(WWW)/Internet to provide accessibility by NASA managers and contractors.

  20. IMPLEMENTATION OF DEFENSE NUCLEAR FACILITY SAFETY BOARD RECOMMENDATION 2000-2 AT WIPP

    The Defense Nuclear Safeties Board (DNFSB) issued Recommendation 2000-2 on March 8, 2000, concerning the degrading conditions of vital safety systems, or systems important to nuclear safety, at DOE sites across the nation. The Board recommended that the DOE take action to assess the condition of its nuclear systems to ensure continued operational readiness of vital safety systems that are important for safely accomplishing the DOE's mission. To verify the readiness of vital safety systems, a two-phased approach was established. Phase I consisted of a qualitative assessment to approved criteria of the defined vital safety systems by operating contractor personnel, overseen by Federal field office personnel. Based on Phase I Assessment results, vital safety systems with significant deficiencies would be further assessed in Phase II, a more extensive quantitative assessment, by a contractor and Federal team, using a second set of criteria. In addition, Defense Nuclear Facility Safety Board Recommendation 2000-2 concluded that the degradation of confinement ventilation systems was of major concern, and issued a separate set of criteria to perform a Phase II Assessment on confinement ventilation systems.

  1. Electron transfer reactions on Cs/MoS2(0002) with chlorine, oxygen, and water: High resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical study

    Supra-valence electron transfer from surface Cs-doped MoS2(0002) to electron acceptor adsorbates was investigated by high resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HRXPS) in the valence band region and above the valence band maximum (VBM). Deposition of a sub-monolayer amount of Cs onto the basal plane of MoS2 introduced a new electron density of states at ca. 1.25 eV above VBM. Angle-resolved HRXPS and theoretical analysis located this electron density in the MoS2 layer. Upon the reaction with Cl2, this Cs-induced photoelectron almost completely disappeared and the Cs 3d and Cl 2p core levels indicated the formation of a surface Cs-chloride species. The Cs-covered MoS2(0002) surface also reacted with O2 to form surface peroxides and superoxides, as evidenced by two distinct binding energies of the O 1s core level peaks. However, the reaction with water proved to be more difficult: Exposure of the Cs-covered MoS2(0002) surface to H2O at 10-5 Torr did not result in electron transfer reaction, but the Cs/MoS2(0002) surface exposed to H2O at 1 Torr showed a substantial decrease in the density of states above VBM as well as formation of a surface-hydroxide, indicated by the O 1s core level position. Theoretical calculations using a full-potential linearized augmented plane wave density functional theory (FLAPW-DFT) confirm the conclusion based on experimental intensity anisotropy of the new peak: the Cs 6s electron transfers into the MoS2 substrate, forming the Cs/MoS2 electron donor-acceptor complex with Csδ+. In addition, all phenomena observed during the adsorption of electron donor-acceptor molecules are quantitatively accounted by the theory.

    The purpose of this article is to report the results of a programme for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMCT) of HIV conducted from 1999 to 2002 by the PNLS in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. This programme was supported by grants from the Fonds de solidarité international (FSTI) and the Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK) Foundation. After pre- and posttest counselling, pregnant women from 4 PMI centres underwent screening for HIV. Seropositive women were offered short course AZT and the possibility of financial assistance for breast-feeding. All programme activities were carried out in close cooperation with association members. A total of 22466 tests were given and 18116 women returned for results. Among the 1829 seropositive women to whom PMCT intervention was proposed, 667 received short course AZT. The rate of transmission at 18 months was 162%.   15. Following the Cantabrian (Ventaniella) fault into the Bay of Biscay: a deeply incised canyon, a change of trend, and 20002 km of unstable continental slope

    The Cantabrian fault, known traditionally with the local name of Ventaniella fault is a long-lived rectilinear feature that runs in a NW-SE direction for more than 200 km across northwest Spain. Its origins are linked to the end of the Variscan orogeny, but its important role took place during the extensional processes of the Mesozoic that led Iberia to become a microplate separated from Europe and Africa. With the initiation of the alpine orogeny Iberia converges with Europe pushed from the south by Africa, and the Ventaniella fault acted as a dextral strike slip fault with an important reverse component. It has a relatively low topographic expression, although its NE block is slightly uplifted with respect to the SW one. Traditionally it has been mapped offshore following the trace of the Aviles canyon, a deeply incised canyon 7 miles from the coast, oblique to the E-W coast trend and which descents from 160 m in the continental shelf , down to 4750 m in the abyssal plain of the Bay of Biscay . All this incision occurs along just 50 km length of the narrow continental shelf in this area, making the Aviles canyon one of the steepest in the Atlantic. Through seismic reflection lines across the continental shelf and slope, a bathymetric model up to date and a 3D geological model the fault has been mapped into the sea integrating the seismicity associated to its SW block and the newest geological mapping on land. At the same time, what is observed in the northwest prolongation and termination of the fault against the oceanic crust of the abyssal plain is a continental slope that is full of mass-wasting processes along more than 80 km length, showing gravitational and submarine slide processes in an area that roughly occupies 2000 km 2 and involves a volume of unstable mass estimated in more than 1000 km3 . One of the biggest displaced masses made the Aviles canyon change its trend to N-S in an almost 90° bend close to the middle slope. Although the displaced masses are big, it does not seem to pose an immediate hazard, as they all show a short run-out distance and, being the actual seismicity of low grade, it is not enough to trigger the fall of the unstable slope. The Ventaniella fault runs in the continental shelf and slope in NW-SE direction, but it also has been deduced with the new data a secondary fault trace slightly more W-E, interpreted as a termination in horsetail of the main strike-slip feature. Both structures seem to be responsible for the seismicity and the mass wasting processes observed along this strip of the Cantabrian margin.

    We have reported the epidemic patterns of dengue disease in the Region of the Americas from 1980 through 2007. Dengue cases reported to the Pan American Health Organization were analyzed from three periods: 1980-1989 (80s), 1990-1999 (90s), and 2000-2007 (2000-7). Age distribution data were examined from Brazil, Venezuela, Honduras, and Mexico. Cases increased over time: 1,033,417 (80s) to 2,725,405 (90s) to 4,759,007 (2000-7). The highest concentrations were reported in the Hispanic Caribbean (39.1%) in the 80s shifting to the Southern Cone in the 90s (55%) and 2000-7 (62.9%). From 1980 through 1987, 242 deaths were reported compared with 1,391 during 2000-7. The most frequently isolated serotypes were DENV-1 and DENV-2 (90s) and DENV-2 and DENV-3 (2000-7). The highest incidence was observed among adolescents and young adults; dengue hemorrhagic fever incidence was highest among infants in Venezuela.     ESR ages of corals were compared to assess the validity of different dating techniques. Ten coral samples from the Huon Peninsula of north-eastern Papua New Guinea, previously dated by alpha spectrometric and mass spectrometric uranium-series methods (Grün et al., 1992; Omura et al., 1994), were selected for investigation. The ESR spectra were recorded at X- and Q-band, before and after annealing at 150°C for 14 h, with low and high microwave powers. The D E-values based on the g=2.0007 signal were not significantly affected by microwave power and preheating treatment. The D E-values based on the g=2.0058 signal after annealing appear to be comparable to those based on the g=2.0007 signal, and both sets of corresponding ESR ages are broadly in agreement with the uranium-series ages.

    Biaxial tensile tests of 6000 series aluminum alloy sheet with different density cube textures were carried out using cruciform specimens similar to that developed by one of the authors [Kuwabara, T. et al., J. Material Process. Technol., 80/81(1998), 517-523.]. The specimens are loaded under linear stress paths in a servo-controlled biaxial tensile testing machine. Plastic orthotropy remained coaxial with the principal stresses throughout every experiment. Successive contours of plastic work in stress space and the directions of plastic strain rates were precisely measured and compared with those calculated using selected yield functions. The Yld2000-2d yield functions with exponents of 12 and 6 [Barlat, F. et al., Int. J. Plasticity 19 (2003), 1297-1319] are capable of reproducing the general trends of the work contours and the directions of plastic strain rates observed for test materials with high and low cube textures, respectively. Hydraulic bulge tests were also conducted and the variation of thickness strain along the meridian direction of the bulged specimen was compared with that calculated using finite element analysis (FEA) based on the Yld2000-2d yield functions with exponents of 12 and 6. The differences of cube texture cause significant differences in the strain distributions of the bulged specimens, and the FEA results calculated using the Yld2000-2d yield functions show good agreement with the measurement results.

  10. Characterization of heavily B-doped polycrystalline diamond films using Raman spectroscopy and electron spin resonance

    Heavily B-doped polycrystalline diamond films ([B]≳1019 cm-3) are studied by Raman spectroscopy and electron spin resonance. The formation of an impurity band is accompanied by a Fano-type interference for the one-phonon scattering. Bands at 1200 and 500 cm-1 are observed in Raman spectroscopy for concentrations above 1020 cm-3. They are related to maxima in the phonon density of states, and are ascribed to disordered regions or crystalline regions of very small size. The concentration of defects associated with the paramagnetic signal observed around g=2.0030 increases drastically above 1021 B cm-3. The Mott insulator-metal transition is accompanied by the presence of a new paramagnetic signal (g=2.0007 for 2×1020 B cm-3, g=1.9990 for 1021 B cm-3) ascribed to free holes in the impurity band.

    We study the dissipation of small-scale adiabatic perturbations at early times when the Universe is hotter than T≃0.5  keV. When the wavelength falls below the damping scale k(D)(-1), the acoustic modes diffuse and thermalize, causing entropy production. Before neutrino decoupling, k(D) is primarily set by the neutrino shear viscosity, and we study the effect of acoustic damping on the relic neutrino number, primordial nucleosynthesis, dark-matter freeze-out, and baryogenesis. This sets a new limit on the amplitude of primordial fluctuations of Δ(R)(2)<0.007 at 10(4)  Mpc(-1)≲k≲10(5)  Mpc(-1) and a model-dependent limit of Δ(R)(2)≲0.3 at k≲10(20-25)  Mpc(-1).     The present volume on high energy gamma-ray astronomy discusses the composition and properties of heavy cosmic rays greater than 10 exp 12 eV, implications of the IRAS Survey for galactic gamma-ray astronomy, gamma-ray emission from young neutron stars, and high-energy diffuse gamma rays.     A newly isolated Bacterium strain named UEB-FK was selected from Tunisian Sahara, exhibiting the highest clear zone on agar plates containing oat spelt xylan by staining with Congo red. On the basis of 16S rDNA sequence analysis, this strain was identified as Bacillus mojavensis. This strain produced extracellular xylanase. Xylanase from the strain was purified to homogeneity and had an apparent molecular weight of 14 kDa. The K m and V max values of the purified xylanase on oat spelt xylan were 3.85 mg/mL and 250.02 U/mg, respectively. The optimum pH and temperature for the enzyme were found to be 4.0 and 50 °C, respectively, and the enzyme exhibited significant heat stability. In addition, the enzyme was found to be stable in a wide range of pH (3-9). The main hydrolysis products yielded from garlic straw-extracted xylan were xylobiose and xylotriose. The antioxidant and antibacterial activities of xylan oligosaccharide (XOS) were investigated. As regards to the in vitro antioxidant activities, the XOS showed a important DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) scavenging activity (IC50 = 0.45 mg/mL) and a high β-carotene bleaching (IC50 = 2.2 mg/mL). Furthermore, XOS had a high antimicrobial activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus thuringiensis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. PMID:25351626

  14. A Comparison of Sheet Forming Methods for 5754-O Aluminum Alloy

    The goal of this research was to verify, through experimentation and numerical modeling, that the sheet hydroforming process is a suitable alternative to conventional forming methods such as stamping for 5754-O aluminum alloy sheets. Numerical analyses included implementation of a temperature-dependent anisotropic yield function (YLD 2000-2d) and corresponding forming limit diagram (FLD) into the commercial FEM code LS-Dyna as a user material subroutine (UMAT). The temperature-dependent material model was used in a coupled thermo-mechanical finite element model to assess the accuracy of the UMAT's ability to predict both forming and failure behavior of AA5754-O under various forming conditions [4]. Numerical investigations proved that counteracting pressure used in sheet hydroforming drastically improves the draw depth, irons out wrinkles and delays the onset of failure when compared to conventional forming processes.

  15. Synthesis of SrAl2O4:Eu2+ phosphors co-doped with Dy3+, Tb3+, Si4+ and optimization of co-doping amount by response surface method

    Dy3+ doped SrAl2O4:Eu2+ phosphors were synthesized by high temperature solid phase method in a weak reducing atmosphere (5% H2 + 95% N2). The relationship between the crushed granularity and the phosphors brightness was studied. The effect of co-doping amount of Dy3+, Tb3+ and Si4+ on the structure and properties of SrAl2O4:Eu2+ via response surface method was investigated. Photoluminescence measurement results showed that the initial afterglow brightness of 0.002 mol% Dy3+ doped SrAl2O4:Eu2+0.002 phosphors decreased after first increased within the sintering temperature range from 1150 to 1400 °C, which created the highest value of 12,101 mcd/m2 at 1300 °C. Numerous coarse particles in the powder ought to be crushed for the practical application, however, the brightness became lower accompanied by the decrease of the granularity. The luminescence property of SrAl2O4:Eu2+ sintered at 1200 °C improved by co-doping Dy3+-Tb3+-Si4+. The results of response surface method showed that the influence extent on the luminescence property was Dy3+ > Tb3+ > Si4+. When the co-doping amount in SrAl2O4:Eu2+0.002 phosphors of Dy3+, Tb3+ and Si4+ was 0.001 mol%, 0.0005 mol% and 0.002 mol%, respectively, the initial afterglow brightness of SrAl2O4 was up to the highest value of 12,231 mcd/m2, which was in good agreement on the predicted maximum value of 12,519 mcd/m2 with the optimum co-doping amount of 0.0015 mol% Dy3+, 0.0005 mol% Tb3+ and 0.0017 mol% Si4+. The brightness of co-doped phosphors not only increased by 56.79% than that of SrAl2O4:Eu2+0.002, Dy3+0.002 sintered at 1200 °C, but also was above that of 1300 °C. The emission spectra results showed that, compared with 0.001 mol% Dy3+ doped phosphor, the emission peak of 0.001 mol% Dy3+-0.001 mol% Tb3+ co-doped phosphor generated red shift and increased by 9.3% in emission intensity; 0.001 mol% Dy3+-0.004 mol% Si4+ and 0.001 mol% Dy3+-0.001 mol% Tb3+-0.004 mol% Si4+ co-doped SrAl2O4:Eu2+0.002 emission peak created blue

  16. Estimation of viscous dissipation in nanodroplet impact and spreading

    The developments in nanocoating and nanospray technology have resulted in the increasing importance of the impact of micro-/nanoscale liquid droplets on solid surface. In this paper, the impact of a nanodroplet on a flat solid surface is examined using molecular dynamics simulations. The impact velocity ranges from 58 m/s to 1044 m/s, in accordance with the Weber number ranging from 0.62 to 200.02 and the Reynolds number ranging from 0.89 to 16.14. The obtained maximum spreading factors are compared with previous models in the literature. The predicted results from the previous models largely deviate from our simulation results, with mean relative errors up to 58.12%. The estimated viscous dissipation is refined to present a modified theoretical model, which reduces the mean relative error to 15.12% in predicting the maximum spreading factor for cases of nanodroplet impact.

  17. Biaxial Tensile Test of Cold Rolled IF Steel Sheet for Large Plastic Strain Range

    Deformation behavior of cold rolled IF steel sheet (SPCE) under biaxial tension has been investigated for large plastic strain range over 15%. The test material was bent and TIG welded to form a tubular specimen with an outer diameter of 46.2 mm and wall thickness of 0.8 mm. The tubular specimens have been subjected to linear stress paths in the first quadrant of stress space with the use of a servo-controlled tension-internal pressure testing machine developed by one of the authors [T. Kuwabara, K. Yoshida, K. Narihara, S. Takahashi, Anisotropic plastic deformation of extruded aluminum alloy tube under axial forces and internal pressure, Int. J. Plasticity 21, 101-117 (2005)]. Moreover, biaxial tensile tests using a cruciform specimen have also been carried out to more precisely measure the deformation behavior for a small strain range following initial yielding. True stress-true plastic strain curves, contours of plastic work in stress space and the directions of plastic strain rates have been measured and compared with those calculated using selected yield functions: the von Mises, Hill's quadratic and Yld2000-2d [Barlat, F., Brem, J.C., Yoon, J.W., Chung, K., Dick, R.E., Lege, D.J., Pourboghrat, F., Choi, S.H., Chu, E., Plane stress yield function for aluminum alloy sheets—Part 1: Theory. Int. J. Plasticity 19, 1297-1319 (2003)]. The plastic deformation behavior up to a work equivalent plastic strain of ɛ0p = 0.19 has been successfully measured. It is found that the test material exhibits differential hardening and that the Yld2000-2d yield function with an exponent of six most closely predicts the contours of plastic work and the directions of plastic strain rates.

  18. Accuracy Analysis of Anisotropic Yield Functions based on the Root-Mean Square Error

    This paper evaluates the accuracy of popular anisotropic yield functions based on the root-mean square error (RMSE) of the yield stresses and the R-values. The yield functions include Hill48, Yld89, Yld91, Yld96, Yld2000-2d, BBC2000 and Yld2000-18p yield criteria. Two kind steels and five kind aluminum alloys are selected for the accuracy evaluation. The anisotropic coefficients in yield functions are computed from the experimental data. The downhill simplex method is utilized for the parameter evaluation for the yield function except Hill48 and Yld89 yield functions after the error functions are constructed. The yield stresses and the R-values at every 15°from the rolling direction (RD) and the yield stress and R-value at equibiaxial tension conditions are predicted from each yield function. The predicted yield stresses and R-values are then compared with the experimental data. The root-mean square errors (RMSE) are computed to quantitatively evaluate the yield function. The RMSEs are calculated for the yield stresses and the R-values separately because the yield stress difference is much smaller that the difference in the R-values. The RMSEs of different yield functions are compared for each material. The Hill48 and Yld89 yield functions are the worst choices for the anisotropic description of the yield stress anisotropy while Yld91 yield function is the last choice for the modeling of the R-value directionality. Yld2000-2d and BBC2000 yield function have the same accuracy on the modeling of both the yield stress anisotropy and the R-value anisotropy. The best choice is Yld2000-18 yield function to accurately describe the yield tress and R-value directionalities of sheet metals.

  19. Whole genome sequence of Klebsiella pneumoniae U25, a hypermucoviscous, multidrug resistant, biofilm producing isolate from India

    Klebsiella pneumoniae U25 is a multidrug resistant strain isolated from a tertiary care hospital in Chennai, India. Here, we report the complete annotated genome sequence of strain U25 obtained using PacBio RSII. This is the first report of the whole genome of K. pneumoniaespecies from Chennai. It consists of a single circular chromosome of size 5,491,870-bp and two plasmids of size 211,813 and 172,619-bp. The genes associated with multidrug resistance were identified. The chromosome of U25 was found to have eight antibiotic resistant genes [blaOXA-1,blaSHV-28, aac(6’)1b-cr,catB3, oqxAB, dfrA1]. The plasmid pMGRU25-001 was found to have only one resistant gene (catA1) while plasmid pMGRU25-002 had 20 resistant genes [strAB, aadA1,aac(6’)-Ib, aac(3)-IId,sul1,2, blaTEM-1A,1B,blaOXA-9, blaCTX-M-15,blaSHV-11, cmlA1, erm(B),mph(A)]. A mutation in the porin OmpK36 was identified which is likely to be associated with the intermediate resistance to carbapenems in the absence of carbapenemase genes. U25 is one of the few K. pneumoniaestrains to harbour clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) systems. Two CRISPR arrays corresponding to Cas3 family helicase were identified in the genome. When compared to K. pneumoniaeNTUHK2044, a transposase gene InsH of IS5-13 was found inserted. PMID:26872343

  20. Association Between Specific Depression Symptoms and Glycemic Control Among Patients With Comorbid Type 2 Diabetes and Provisional Depression

    Objective: To determine whether specific depression symptoms are associated with glycemic control independent of potential demographic and clinical covariates among primary care patients with comorbid type 2 diabetes and provisional threshold or subthreshold depression. Method: We examined a convenience sample of patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and provisional threshold or subthreshold depression (N = 82) at 2 family health centers. Cases were identified using a population-based registry of patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (ICD-9 codes 250.00 for controlled type 2 diabetes and 250.02 for uncontrolled type 2 diabetes). Data from patients with a primary care provider appointment from the beginning of April 2011 through the end of June 2012 and with at least one 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) depression screener and a glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) laboratory test between 2 weeks before and 10 weeks after PHQ-9 screening were eligible for inclusion. We defined provisional threshold or subthreshold depression using PHQ-9 scoring criteria, which were designed to yield provisional diagnostic information about major depressive disorder based on DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. Results: Patients reporting higher severity of sleep problems on the PHQ-9 had significantly higher HbA1c levels (mean = 8.48, SD = 2.17) compared to patients reporting lower severity or absence of this symptom (mean = 7.19, SD = 1.34, t48.88 = −3.13, P = .003). Problems with sleep contributed unique variance on glycemic control (β = 0.27, P = .02) when controlling for potential clinical and demographic covariates, with those reporting more sleep difficulties having higher HbA1c levels. Conclusions: For patients with type 2 diabetes and provisional threshold or subthreshold depression, it may be prudent to aggressively address sleep problems as a potential mechanism toward improving diabetes control.   1. Vulnerability to temperature-related mortality in Seoul, Korea

    Studies indicate that the mortality effects of temperature may vary by population and region, although little is known about the vulnerability of subgroups to these risks in Korea. This study examined the relationship between temperature and cause-specific mortality for Seoul, Korea, for the period 2000-7, including whether some subgroups are particularly vulnerable with respect to sex, age, education and place of death. The authors applied time-series models allowing nonlinear relationships for heat- and cold-related mortality, and generated exposure-response curves. Both high and low ambient temperatures were associated with increased risk for daily mortality. Mortality risk was 10.2% (95% confidence interval 7.43, 13.0%) higher at the 90th percentile of daily mean temperatures (25 °C) compared to the 50th percentile (15 °C). Mortality risk was 12.2% (3.69, 21.3%) comparing the 10th (-1 °C) and 50th percentiles of temperature. Cardiovascular deaths showed a higher risk to cold, whereas respiratory deaths showed a higher risk to heat effect, although the differences were not statistically significant. Susceptible populations were identified such as females, the elderly, those with no education, and deaths occurring outside of a hospital for heat- and cold-related total mortality. Our findings provide supportive evidence of a temperature-mortality relationship in Korea and indicate that some subpopulations are particularly vulnerable.

  2. The Outer X-ray and Radio Jets in R Aquarii

    The symbiotic star R Aquarii has been known to emit collimated outflow in the form of jets for many years. We report on five years of observations in x-rays and radio using Chandra, VLA and XMM-Newton. We discuss the evolution of the outer thermal jets, including new observations performed in June and October 2005. We see motion of the NE x-ray jet at a projected velocity of about 600 km (sup -1). The SW x-ray jet has almost disappeared between 2000.7 and 2004.0. An XMM grating spectrum of the NE jet confirms the existence of O VII He-like lines, and offers the possibility of doing plasma density diagnostics. We comment on on the physics of cooling in the SW jet and implications for the density of the x-ray emitting gas, the heating mechanism, and mass and kinetic energy in the jets and its implications for the system as a whole.   3. Lithospheric flexure revealed by Pleistocene emerged marine terraces on the southern Hawaiian Islands

    New field and geochronological data from emerged marine deposits in the southern Hawaiian Islands suggest uplift of the islands of Molokai, Lanai and Oahu. Corals from these islands were dated by ESR. The accumulated dose for aragonitic coral at ESR signal, g = 2.0007, was determined by the additive dose method. The environmental dose rate was estimated from the Uranium concentration in corals and by using an estimate of 2.5 rad/a for the cosmic ray dose. The ESR ages of the highest terraces on Molokai are 290 [+-] 31 ka (30 m), on Lanai 217 [+-] 19 ka (50 m) and on Oahu 468 [+-] 36 ka (28 m). The age and elevation of the marine terraces are interpreted to imply uplift during the Late Quaternary. Lithospheric flexure combined with horizontal plate motion is proposed as a mechanism to describe the pattern of uplifted terraces on these islands. Using two-dimensional elastic plate models, the height of maximum bulge is approximately 4% to 7% of the maximum deflection for a continuous or broken plate model. Drowned reefs off Hawaii indicate subsidence of 1 km since 340 ka. Thus, the magnitude of observed uplift (30--50 m) is consistent with theoretical maximum bulge heights derived from numerical results.

  4. Measurement and material modeling of biaxial work-hardening behavior for pure titanium sheet

    Biaxial tensile tests of a commercial pure titanium sheet (JIS ♯1) were performed using a servo-controlled multiaxial tube expansion testing machine developed by one of the authors [Kuwabara, T. and Sugawara, F., Multiaxial tube expansion test method for measurement of sheet metal deformation behavior under biaxial tension for a large strain range, Int. J. Plasticity, 45 (2013), 103-118]. Tubular specimens with an inner diameter of 54 mm were fabricated by roller bending and TIG welding the as-received test material with a thickness of 0.5 mm. Several linear stress paths in the first quadrant of the stress space were applied to the tubular specimens to measure the contours of plastic work and the directions of the plastic strain rates for an equivalent plastic strain range of 0.05 ≤ ɛ0p ≤ 0.30. It was found that the shapes of the work contours significantly changed with an increase in ɛ0p and that the Yld2000-2d yield function could reproduce the differential work hardening behavior of the test material by changing the material parameters and the exponent as functions of ɛ0p.

  5. In-situ stress analysis with X-Ray diffraction for yield locus characterization of sheet metals

    A main problem in the field of sheet metal characterization is the inhomogeneous plastic deformation in the gauge regions of specimens which causes the analytically calculated stresses to differ from the sought state of stress acting in the middle of the gauge region. To overcome this problem, application of X-Ray diffraction is analyzed. For that purpose a mobile X-ray diffractometer and an optical strain measurement system are mounted on a universal tensile testing machine. This enables the recording of the whole strain and stress history of a material point. The method is applied to uniaxial tension tests, plane strain tension tests and shear tests to characterize the interstitial free steel alloy DC06. The applicability of the concepts of stress factors is verified by uniaxial tension tests. The experimentally obtained values are compared with the theoretical values calculated with crystal elasticity models utilizing the orientation distribution functions (ODF). The relaxation problem is addressed which shows itself as drops in the stress values with the strain kept at a constant level. This drop is analyzed with elasto-viscoplastic material models to correct the measured stresses. Results show that the XRD is applicable to measure the stresses in sheet metals with preferred orientation. The obtained yield locus is expressed with the Yld2000-2D material model and an industry oriented workpiece is analyzed numerically. The comparison of the strain distribution on the workpiece verifies the identified material parameters.

  6. Biaxial unloading and springback behavior of dual-phase DP590 steel using cruciform specimens

    The unloading behavior of a dual-phase steel (DP590) from a biaxial state of stress was probed using a newly-designed cruciform specimen. The specimen was designed to develop uniform and relatively large plastic strains (over 15% equivalent logarithmic plastic strain) in the gage section, before failure. Nine radial loading paths in the 1st quadrant of the plane stress space were probed. The experiments involved repeated loading and unloading up to failure. At every unloading, the initial response was found to agree with the linear, orthotropically elastic response of the undeformed material. This first linear response was followed by a second one, at a reduced slope. Beyond that, the recorded response was fully non-linear. The same sequence of events was observed during each reloading. The biaxial non-linear strain recovery components ɛxnl and ɛynl were measured to be on average approximately 11% of the elastic strains ɛxe and ɛye, respectively. This ratio was found to increase with plastic deformation. Subsequently, these biaxial experiments were used to calibrate the Yld2000-2D yield function.

  7. Magnetic Field Line Topology of the Scrape-Off Layer in the Compact Stellarator NCSX

    The magnetic topology of the plasma boundary of the proposed compact stellarator NCSX is investigated using the MFBE[1] and VMEC2000[2] codes. The VMEC code provides a free boundary equilibrium and the magnetics from external coils and bootstrap plasma currents inside the last closed magnetic surface (LCMS). The MFBE code uses these results to calculate the magnetic fields of these finite beta equilibria outside the LCMS in a form suitable for line tracing. The Poincaré plots of field lines started outside the LCMS indicate preservation of initial radial ordering of field lines up to intersections with vacuum vessel and plasma facing components. A large flux expansion of field lines is observed between the midplane and tips of the banana shaped cross-section, due to the presence of a nearby poloidal field null used to create the banana shape. TRIM coils used to heal islands just within the LCMS appear to reduce stochasticity just outside the LCMS as well as enhance an island structure outside the LCMS. Field lines are observed to move in and out radially as they are followed toroidally. Power and particle control design based on these observations include the limiting structure geometry and baffles designed to intersect islands outside the LCMS.     Reaction of 3-aryl-1-(benzofuran-2-yl)-2-propen-1-ones 3a-c with malononitrile in the presence of sufficient amount of sodium alkoxide in the corresponding alcohol proceeds in a regioselective manner to afford 2-alkoxy-4-aryl-6-(benzofuran-2-yl)-3-pyridinecarbonitriles 4-37, which also obtained by treating ylidenemalononitriles 6a-q with 2-acetylbenzofuran 1 in the presence of sufficient amount of sodium alkoxide in the corresponding alcohol. The new chemical entities showed significant vasodilation properties using isolated thoracic aortic rings of rats pre-contracted with norepinephrine hydrochloride standard technique. Compounds 11, 16, 21, 24 and 30 exhibited remarkable activity compared with amiodarone hydrochloride the reference standard used in the present study.     In vivo and in vitro experiments showed that border cell (BC) survival was dependent on root tip mucigel in barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Hang 981). In aeroponic culture, BC development was an induced process in barley, whereas in hydroponic culture, it was a kinetic equilibrium process during which 300-400 BCs were released into water daily. The response of root elongation to temperatures (10-35 degrees C) was very sensitive but temperature changes had no great effect on barley BC development. At 35 degrees C, the root elongation ceased whereas BC production still continued, indicating that the two processes might be regulated independently under high temperature (35 degrees C) stress. Fifty microM Al could inhibit significantly BC development by inhibiting pectin methylesterase activity in the root cap of cv. 2000-2 (Al-sensitive) and cv. Humai 16 (Al-tolerant), but 20 microM Al could not block BC development in cv. Humai 16. BCs and their mucigel of barley had a limited role in the protection of Al-induced inhibition of root elongation, but played a significant role in the prevention of Al from diffusing into the meristems of the root tip and the root cap. Together, these results suggested that BC development was a temperature-insensitive but Al-sensitive process, and that BCs and their mucigel played an important role in the protection of root tip and root cap meristems from Al toxicity.     In order to analyze the time-dependent spring-back behavior of the aluminum alloy 6022-T4 sheet, the viscoelastic/plastic constitutive law was applied by utilizing a linear viscoelastic/plastic model previously developed. As for the plastic deformation, the combined isotropic-kinematic hardening law was used to represent the Bauschinger behavior and transient hardening, while a non-quadratic anisotropic yield function, Yld2000-2d, was applied to account for anisotropic yield behavior. The numerical formulation was developed based on the incremental deformation viscoelastic/plasticity theory and then, the constitutive law was implemented into the ABAQUS/Standard commercial finite element program using the user-defined material subroutine, UMAT. The viscoelastic behavior was characterized by the creep test above the initial yield stress level, while anisotropic yielding and hardening parameters were obtained by the uniaxial tensile test. The constitutive law and the formulation were successfully validated for time-dependent springback in the draw-bend test.

  11. Theory of electron g-tensor in bulk and quantum-well semiconductors

    We present quantitative calculations for the electron g-tensors in bulk and quantum-well semiconductors based on a generalized P.p envelope function theory solved in a fourteen-band restricted basis set. The dependences of g-tensor on structure, magnetic field, carrier density, temperature, and spin polarization have been explored and will be described. It is found that at temperatures of a few Kelvin and fields of a few Tesla, the g-tensors for bulk semiconductors develop quasi-steplike dependences on carrier density or magnetic field due to magnetic quantization, and this effect is even more pronounced in quantum-well semiconductors due to the additional electric quantization along the growth direction. The influence of quantum confinement on the electron g-tensors in QWs is studied by examining the dependence of electron g-tensors on well width.   12. Plastic Instability in Complex Strain Paths Predicted by Advanced Constitutive Equations

    The present paper aims at predicting plastic instabilities under complex loading histories using an advanced sheet metal forming limit model. The onset of localized necking is computed using the Marciniak-Kuczinsky (MK) analysis [1] with a physically-based hardening model and the phenomenological anisotropic yield criterion Yld2000-2d [2]. The hardening model accounts for anisotropic work-hardening induced by the microstructural evolution at large strains, which was proposed by Teodosiu and Hu [3]. Simulations are carried out for linear and complex strain paths. Experimentally, two deep-drawing quality sheet metals are selected: a bake-hardening steel (BH) and a DC06 steel sheet. The validity of the model is assessed by comparing the predicted and experimental forming limits. The remarkable accuracy of the developed software to predict the forming limits under linear and non-linear strain path is obviously due to the performance of the advanced constitutive equations to describe with great detail the material behavior. The effect of strain-induced anisotropy on formability evolution under strain path changes, as predicted by the microstructural hardening model, is particularly well captured by the model.

    The primary emphasis in governmental regulation for the prevention and mitigation of automotive trauma tends to be restricted to just a few human surrogates; for example, most Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards in the United States involve a 50th-percentile male. This practice is known to conflict with real life, and it can lead to the problem of having safety equipment that is designed to protect some people but can kill or seriously injure others. The influence of physique on neck injury potential is best determined by isolating it as the sole variable in an insult, a constraint satisfied only when there are isokinetic and isogeometric conditions. The latter require there to be pairs of same-vehicle occupants, which are much less common than those relating to the effect of other parameters for impact[1] and environment[2]. Among a possible 60 or so such pairs in the large patient cohort assembled for this study, various subsets were identified as being suitable for detailed research on neck injury and the results of this are reported here.     A simple and sensitive liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method has been developed for the quantification of ambrisentan (AMB) in human plasma using midazolam (MID) as an internal standard (IS). Chromatographic separation was performed using a Beta Basic-8 (50 × 4.6 mm, 5 µm) column with an isocratic mobile phase. AMB and MID were detected with proton adducts at m/z 379.09 → 303.12 and 326.15 → 291.14 in multiple reaction monitoring-positive mode, respectively. A solid-phase extraction method was used for extraction of the analyte and IS from the plasma samples. The method was shown to be reproducible and reliable with within-run precision <11%, between-run precision <14% and linear concentration range from 10.0 to 2000.2 ng/mL, with a correlation coefficient (r(2) ) of >0.995. The method was successfully applied to a pharmacokinetic study of oral administration of AMB (10 mg) in 24 healthy Indian male human volunteers under fasting conditions. PMID:24616031

  15. Morphology of cerium oxide surfaces in an oxidzing enviroment:a first-principles investigation

    A good understanding of the stability and chemistry of CeO2 surfaces is crucial for a better designing of solid oxide fuel cells. As the first step, we use DFT [1] to study the structural and electronic ground state properties of bulk CeO2. various surface termination of the low-index surface of CeO2 are then investigated, namely the stoichiometric, metal- and oxygen- rich terminations, and defected surfaces. Using the concept of ab initio atomistic thermodynamics&[tilde;2], we calculate the surface free energy phase diagram. This allows us to identify and predict stable, and potentally catalytically important, structures. There is an evidence to suggest an interesting morphological change in the surface structures with varying oxygen concentration.   16. A SNP resource for Douglas-fir: de novo transcriptome assembly and SNP detection and validation

    Background Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), one of the most economically and ecologically important tree species in the world, also has one of the largest tree breeding programs. Although the coastal and interior varieties of Douglas-fir (vars. menziesii and glauca) are native to North America, the coastal variety is also widely planted for timber production in Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Our main goal was to develop a SNP resource large enough to facilitate genomic selection in Douglas-fir breeding programs. To accomplish this, we developed a 454-based reference transcriptome for coastal Douglas-fir, annotated and evaluated the quality of the reference, identified putative SNPs, and then validated a sample of those SNPs using the Illumina Infinium genotyping platform. Results We assembled a reference transcriptome consisting of 25,002 isogroups (unique gene models) and 102,623 singletons from 2.76 million 454 and Sanger cDNA sequences from coastal Douglas-fir. We identified 278,979 unique SNPs by mapping the 454 and Sanger sequences to the reference, and by mapping four datasets of Illumina cDNA sequences from multiple seed sources, genotypes, and tissues. The Illumina datasets represented coastal Douglas-fir (64.00 and 13.41 million reads), interior Douglas-fir (80.45 million reads), and a Yakima population similar to interior Douglas-fir (8.99 million reads). We assayed 8067 SNPs on 260 trees using an Illumina Infinium SNP genotyping array. Of these SNPs, 5847 (72.5%) were called successfully and were polymorphic. Conclusions Based on our validation efficiency, our SNP database may contain as many as ~200,000 true SNPs, and as many as ~69,000 SNPs that could be genotyped at ~20,000 gene loci using an Infinium II array—more SNPs than are needed to use genomic selection in tree breeding programs. Ultimately, these genomic resources will enhance Douglas-fir breeding and allow us to better understand landscape-scale patterns of genetic variation

  17. Pharmaceutical supply for disaster victims who need chronic disease management in region with aging population based on lessons learned from the Noto Peninsula Earthquake in 2007.

    The lessons from the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and Chuuetsu Earthquake showed us how difficult it is to keep chronic disease management for survivors of such large-scale earthquakes, particularly for elderly people. To solve the problem, an ordinance for enforcement on exceptional practices was issued for the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law Article 49 Clause 1. The law allows selling prescription medicines for patients with chronic diseases who have difficulties to continue their medications due to a large-scale disaster. To make it work, the patient should demonstrate that he or she continuously received the medication by presenting either Medication Notebook or prescription book recorded by the pharmacist. However, the Separation Rate of Prescription and Dispensing in Japan is still low; in particular, that in Ishikawa prefecture, where the Noto Peninsula Earthquake (M 6.9) occurred on March 25, 20007, is very low. It means that few victims hold a Medication Notebook. In consideration of this situation, we conducted a questionnaire survey of elderly victims of the Noto Peninsula Earthquake with a key-informant-interview during the period from July through August, 2007. This study revealed that: 1) Only 16% (18/110) of respondents kept a Medication Notebook; 2) 75% (82/110) had chronic diseases and received medication regularly; 3) Of 81 who had chronic diseases, 42% (34/91) were dispensed at the same pharmacy always, (The rest received from either clinic or changing pharmacy according to clinic location); and 4) Diseases that the respondents had were hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and so on. Based on these results, we discuss the establishment of a pharmaceutical supply system that can effectively distribute appropriate medicines to patients under difficult situations following a large-scale disaster in Japan.   18. Evaluation of SCaMPR Satellite QPEs for Operational Hydrologic Prediction

    National Weather Service (NWS) River Forecast Centers (RFCs) use rain gauge or radar-gauge multi-sensor quantitative precipitation estimates (QPEs) as the primary rainfall input to their operational hydrologic models. In areas with poor radar and rain gauge coverage, satellite-based QPEs are a potential alternative. In this work, we evaluated the utility of satellite-based QPEs produced via the Self-Calibrating Multivariate Precipitation Retrieval (SCaMPR) algorithm for operational hydrologic modeling for a set of basins in Texas and Louisiana for the period of 2000-7. First, we assessed the relative accuracy of two sets of SCaMPR QPEs versus gauge-only QPE, with operational multi-sensor QPEs as the reference. One set used only operational polar orbiting satellite microwave input as the predictors, the other included Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) rain rates in the calibration process. We then performed hydrologic simulations using these QPEs and evaluated the simulations. Results indicated that a) SCaMPR QPEs showed better/worse skill than the gauge-only QPEs in resolving heavy precipitation at 1-h/24-h time intervals in terms of Critical Success Index (CSI); b) SCaMPR QPEs underperformed gauge-only QPEs in simulating flood events; and c) ingesting TRMM rainfall rates helped enhance the hydrologic utility of SCaMPR QPE, by mitigating the positive bias of SCaMPR QPEs, elevating the detection rates of heavy rainfall, and improving the simulation of flood discharge. Our findings suggest that the superior performance of gauge-only QPEs versus SCaMPR in hydrologic simulations is tied to its better accuracy at 24-h scale. The implication of the scale dependence in the relative performance of SCaMPR QPEs to their potential hydrologic utility is discussed.

  19. Correlation between the sunspot number and tropospheric refractivity in a tropical environment

    In this paper, a study of the tropospheric surface refractivity relationship with sunspots number variability on daily scale was carried out in a tropical region in Nigeria. The data was averaged to hourly mean from the initial five minutes update cycle and then to daily mean using spread sheet. The dependence of surface radio refractivity on sunspots number for the period considered in this work was established using linear regression coefficient and the results for Lagos and Anyigba are R2=0.019, R2=0.004, R2=0.010, R2=0.000 and R2=0.000 for 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 and R2=0.089, R2=0.027 and R2=0.007 for 2010, 2011 and 2012 respectively. However, when the spotless days were filtered the regression coefficient was obtained to be R2=0.145, R2=0.01261, R2=0.00001, R2=0.0012 and R2=0.062 for 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 for Lagos and R2=0.1155, R2=0.0261 and R2=0.0071 for 2010, 2011 and 2012 for Anyigba respectively. Meteorological data from 2007 to 2011 was employed for Lagos while meteorological data from 2010 to 2012 was employed for Anyigba. Sunspot data was also obtained from Royal Observatory of Belgium for the period under study. Results obtained show no correlation between Sunspot number and surface refractivity. The sunspot number data was filtered to remove noise due to spotless days. The result obtained after filtering did not show any significant difference.

  20. High voltage breakdown studies of sol-gel MgO-ZrO 2 insulation coatings under various pressures at 298 K and 77 K

    High voltage breakdown (HV bd) tests were performed to investigate electrical properties of high temperature MgO-ZrO 2 insulation coatings on long-length stainless steel (SS) tapes under various pressures at room temperature (298 K) and liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K) for applications of HTS/LTS coils and magnets. After solutions were prepared from Mg and Zr based precursors, solvent and chelating agent, the coating were fabricated on SS substrates using reel-to-reel sol-gel technique. Coating thicknesses for 4, 8, and 9 dippings were about 7, 12, and 13 μm, respectively, and thickness of epoxy-impregnated samples (stycast 2850 FT/24 LV) were measured to be 32 μm. The pressure from 0 GPa to 0.54 GPa was applied on to test couples, the stycast thicknesses between the layers were varied 32-20 μm. Thickness of the coatings and epoxy-impregnated using stycast were determined by using environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). The resistance, capacitance, and HV bd of the samples were measured by using standard machines HP 439 a high resistance meter, 161 analog digital capacitance meter and model 200-02R high voltage power supply, respectively. Electric strength and dielectric constant were calculated at 298 and 77 K under various pressures. The high HV bd, and electric strength values of the samples were 2.84 kV and 45.91 kV/mm, respectively. ESEM observation revealed that arcing spots in the insulation coatings become larger and deeper for higher HV bd’s.

As part of the NASA's Carbon Monitoring System, we developed a methodology based on a combination of ground inventory and space observations to develop spatially refined carbon pools and fluxes including the gross emissions and sequestration of carbon at each 1-ha land unit across the forestlands in the continental United States (CONUS) for the period of 2006-2010. Here, we provide the magnitude and uncertainty of multiple pools and fluxes of the US forestlands and outline the observational requirements to reduce the uncertainties for developing national climate mitigation policies based on the carbon sequestration capacity of the US forest lands.     The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of using corn stover or three different wood-based bedding materials (kiln-dried pine wood chips, dry cedar chips, or green cedar chips) on airborne concentrations of NH, total reduced sulfides (TRS), CO, CH, and NO above lab-scaled bedded manure packs. Four bedded packs of each bedding material were maintained for two 42-d periods. Airborne NH, TRS, CO, CH, and NO were measured weekly. Bedded packs containing dry or green cedar had lower concentrations of NH (350.8 and 357.3 mg m, respectively; < 0.05) than bedded packs containing pine chips or corn stover (466.0 and 516.7 mg m, respectively). Airborne CO was also lower from bedded packs containing dry and green cedar (1343.7 and 1232.3 mg m, respectively; < 0.001) compared with bedded packs containing pine chips or corn stover (2000.2 and 1659.8 mg m, respectively). Air samples from bedded packs containing green cedar chips had a higher ( < 0.01) concentration of CH than bedded packs containing dry cedar chips, corn stover, or pine chips at Day 35 and 42. Initially, TRS concentration was similar among all bedding materials; at 28 to 42 d, TRS was higher ( < 0.001) from bedded packs containing the cedar products. Airborne NO was similar ( = 0.51) for all bedding materials. Pine chips and cedar products can be adequate substitutes for corn stover in deep-bedded barns, but cedar bedding may need to be removed more frequently. PMID:25603067

  3. Protein intake and lumbar bone density: the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA).

    Dietary protein has been shown to increase urinary Ca excretion in randomised controlled trials, and diets high in protein may have detrimental effects on bone health; however, studies examining the relationship between dietary protein and bone health have conflicting results. In the present study, we examined the relationship between dietary protein (total, animal and vegetable protein) and lumbar spine trabecular volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) among participants enrolled in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (n 1658). Protein intake was assessed using a FFQ obtained at baseline examination (2000-2). Lumbar spine vBMD was measured using quantitative computed tomography (2002-5), on average 3 years later. Multivariable linear and robust regression techniques were used to examine the associations between dietary protein and vBMD. Sex and race/ethnicity jointly modified the association of dietary protein with vBMD (P for interaction = 0·03). Among white women, higher vegetable protein intake was associated with higher vBMD (P for trend = 0·03), after adjustment for age, BMI, physical activity, alcohol consumption, current smoking, educational level, hormone therapy use, menopause and additional dietary factors. There were no consistently significant associations for total and animal protein intakes among white women or other sex and racial/ethnic groups. In conclusion, data from the present large, multi-ethnic, population-based study suggest that a higher level of protein intake, when substituted for fat, is not associated with poor bone health. Differences in the relationship between protein source and race/ethnicity of study populations may in part explain the inconsistent findings reported previously. PMID:25192416

    The third US Naval Observatory (USNO) CCD Astrograph Catalog, UCAC3, was released at the IAU General Assembly on 2009 August 10. It is the first all-sky release in this series and contains just over 100 million objects, about 95 million of them with proper motions, covering about R = 8-16 mag. Current epoch positions are obtained from the observations with the 20 cm aperture USNO Astrograph's 'red lens', equipped with a 4k x 4k CCD. Proper motions are derived by combining these observations with over 140 ground- and space-based catalogs, including Hipparcos/Tycho and the AC2000.2, as well as unpublished measures of over 5000 plates from other astrographs. For most of the faint stars in the southern hemisphere, the Yale/San Juan first epoch plates from the Southern Proper Motion (SPM) program (YSJ1) form the basis for proper motions. These data are supplemented by all-sky Schmidt plate survey astrometry and photometry obtained from the SuperCOSMOS project, as well as 2MASS near-IR photometry. Major differences of UCAC3 data as compared with UCAC2 include a completely new raw data reduction with improved control over systematic errors in positions, significantly improved photometry, slightly deeper limiting magnitude, coverage of the north pole region, greater completeness by inclusion of double stars, and weak detections. This of course leads to a catalog which is not as 'clean' as UCAC2 and problem areas are outlined for the user in this paper. The positional accuracy of stars in UCAC3 is about 15-100 mas per coordinate, depending on magnitude, while the errors in proper motions range from 1 to 10 mas yr{sup -1} depending on magnitude and observing history, with a significant improvement over UCAC2 achieved due to the re-reduced SPM data and inclusion of more astrograph plate data unavailable at the time of UCAC2.

  5. Measurement and Analysis of Ultra-Thin Austenitic Stainless Steel Sheet under Biaxial Tensile Loading and In-Plane Reverse Loading

    Biaxial tensile tests of austenitic stainless steel sheet (SUS304) 0.2mm thick have been carried out using cruciform specimens. The specimens are loaded under linear stress paths in a servo-controlled biaxial tensile testing machine. Plastic orthotropy remained coaxial with the principal stresses throughout every experiment. The successive contours of plastic work in biaxial stress space changed their shapes progressively, exemplifying differential work hardening. The geometry of the entire family of the work contours and the directions of plastic strain rates have been precisely measured and compared with those calculated using conventional yield functions. Yld2000-2d [Barlat, F., Brem, J.C., Yoon, J.W., Chung, K., Dick, R.E., Lege, D.J., Pourboghrat, F., Choi, S.H. and Chu, E., International Journal of Plasticity, Vol. 19, (2003), pp. 1297-1319.] with an exponent of 6 was capable of reproducing the general trends of the work contours and the directions of plastic strain rates with good accuracy. Furthermore, in order to quantitatively evaluate the Bauschinger effect of the test material, in-plane tension/compression tests are conducted. It was found that the non-dimensional (σ /σu) - Δɛ /(σu/ E) curves measured during unloading almost fall on a single curve and are not affected by the amount of pre-strain, where σ is the current stress during unloading, σu is the stress immediately before unloading, Δɛ (< 0) is the total strain increment during unloading.

  6. Temperature-Dependent, Linearly Interpolable, Tabulated Cross Section Library Based on ENDF/B-VI, Release 8.

    Version 00 As distributed, the original evaluated data include cross sections represented in the form of a combination of resonance parameters and/or tabulated energy dependent cross sections, nominally at 0 Kelvin temperature. For use in applications this library has been processed into the form of temperature dependent cross sections at eight neutron reactor like temperatures, between 0 and 2100 Kelvin, in steps of 300 Kelvin. It has also been processed to five astrophysics like temperatures,more » 1, 10, 100 eV, 1 and 10 keV. For reference purposes, 300 Kelvin is approximately 1/40 eV, so that 1 eV is approximately 12,000 Kelvin. At each temperature the cross sections are tabulated and linearly interpolable in energy. POINT2004 contains all of the evaluations in the ENDF/B-VI general purpose library, which contains evaluations for 328 materials (isotopes or naturally occurring elemental mixtures of isotopes). No special purpose ENDF/B-VI libraries, such as fission products, thermal scattering, or photon interaction data are included. The majority of these evaluations are complete, in the sense that they include all cross sections over the energy range 10-5 eV to at least 20 MeV. However, the following are only partial evaluations that either contain only single reactions and no total cross section (Mg24, K41, Ti46, Ti47, Ti48, Ti50 and Ni59), or do not include energy dependent cross sections above the resonance region (Ar40, Mo92, Mo98, Mo100, In115, Sn120, Sn122 and Sn124). The CCC-638/TART20002 code package is recommended for use with these data. Codes within TART can be used to display these data or to run calculations using these data.« less

    Globally, terrestrial ecosystems have absorbed about 30% of anthropogenic emissions over the period 20007-2007 and inter-hemispheric gradients indicate that a significant fraction of terrestrial carbon sequestration must be north of the Equator. We present a compilation of the CO2, CO, CH4 and N2O balance of Europe following a dual constraint approach in which (1) a land-based balance derived mainly from ecosystem carbon inventories and (2) a land-based balance derived from flux measurements are confronted with (3) the atmospheric-based balance derived from inversion informed by measurements of atmospheric GHG concentrations. Good agreement between the GHG balances based on fluxes (1249 ± 545 Tg C in CO2-eq y-1), inventories (1299 ± 200 Tg C in CO2-eq y-1) and inversions (1210 ± 405 Tg C in CO2-eq y-1) increases our confidence that current European GHG balances are accurate. However, the uncertainty remains large and largely lacks formal estimates. Given that European net land-atmosphere balances are determined by a few dominant fluxes, the uncertainty of these key components needs to be formally estimated before efforts could be made to reduce the overall uncertainty. The dual-constraint approach confirmed that the European land surface, including inland waters and urban areas, is a net source for CO2, CO, CH4 and N2O. However, for all ecosystems except croplands, C uptake exceeds C release and us such 210 ± 70 Tg C y-1 from fossil fuel burning is removed from the atmosphere and sequestered in both terrestrial and inland aquatic ecosystems. If the C cost for ecosystem management is taken into account, the net uptake of ecosystems was estimated to decrease by 45% but still indicates substantial C-sequestration. Also, when the balance is extended from CO2 towards the main GHGs, C-uptake by terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems is compensated for by emissions of GHGs. As such the European ecosystems are unlikely to contribute to mitigating the effects of climate

  9. THE FOURTH US NAVAL OBSERVATORY CCD ASTROGRAPH CATALOG (UCAC4)

    The fourth United States Naval Observatory (USNO) CCD Astrograph Catalog, UCAC4, was released in 2012 August (double-sided DVD and CDS data center Vizier catalog I/322). It is the final release in this series and contains over 113 million objects; over 105 million of them with proper motions (PMs). UCAC4 is an updated version of UCAC3 with about the same number of stars also covering all-sky. Bugs were fixed, Schmidt plate survey data were avoided, and precise five-band photometry was added for about half the stars. Astrograph observations have been supplemented for bright stars by FK6, Hipparcos, and Tycho-2 data to compile a UCAC4 star catalog complete from the brightest stars to about magnitude R = 16. Epoch 1998-2004 positions are obtained from observations with the 20 cm aperture USNO Astrograph's 'red lens', equipped with a 4k by 4k CCD. Mean positions and PMs are derived by combining these observations with over 140 ground- and space-based catalogs, including Hipparcos/Tycho and the AC2000.2, as well as unpublished measures of over 5000 plates from other astrographs. For most of the faint stars in the southern hemisphere, the first epoch plates from the Southern Proper Motion program form the basis for PMs, while the Northern Proper Motion first epoch plates serve the same purpose for the rest of the sky. These data are supplemented by 2MASS near-IR photometry for about 110 million stars and five-band (B, V, g, r, i) APASS data for over 51 million stars. Thus the published UCAC4, as were UCAC3 and UCAC2, is a compiled catalog with the UCAC observational program being a major component. The positional accuracy of stars in UCAC4 at mean epoch is about 15-100 mas per coordinate, depending on magnitude, while the formal errors in PMs range from about 1 to 10 mas yr{sup -1} depending on magnitude and observing history. Systematic errors in PMs are estimated to be about 1-4 mas yr{sup -1}.
