    Three immature Sunda wrinkled hornbills (Aceros corrugatus) were diagnosed postmortem with proventricular spirurid nematodiasis. Concurrent severe disseminated larval granulomatosis in other visceral organs was considered contributory to mortality in each case. Clinical signs of nematodiasis were vague but generally consisted of weight loss, anorexia, and lethargy. Frequent antemortem fecal examinations were negative for spirurid eggs. In these present cases, based on routine histopathology, both prophylactic and empirically based therapeutic anthelmintic treatments had no evident benefit in the elimination of the proventricular nematodes. Spirurid nematodiasis may be an important cause of mortality in young hornbills.

  3. Determining nitrogen requirements of Aceros and Buceros hornbills.

    Over 2 months, seven feeding trials were conducted at St. Catherines Island, GA, to quantify protein intake and utilization in captive mature nonreproducing Aceros (n=3 spp.) and Buceros (n=2 spp.) Hornbills were fed homogeneous isocaloric diets. A mixture of Bird of Paradise pellets, grapes, and raisins was offered to the birds as grape-sized balls, supplemented with diced cantaloupe melon to maintain hydration. To vary the protein level (range 10.8-22.6%) within the diets, different amounts of a powdered soy protein supplement were added to the mixture. Test diets were fed for 3 consecutive days. Birds were weighed to test for differences among diets. All excreta and diet samples were collected for nitrogen (N) analysis. Feeding trials were separated by a 4-day period, in which the bird's regular diet was fed. Data were analyzed for N balance, N equilibrium (regression of N intake vs. N excretion) and body mass. Regression analysis of N balances of the nine birds showed that the N equilibriums ranged from 0.081 to 0.595 g N/kg(0.75)/d with an average of 0.387+/-0.298. No differences in N balances were found between Aceros and Buceros hornbills. The methodology of this study suggested a dietary crude protein (CP) requirement of 7.3+/-3.0% dry matter (DM) in a diet containing 4.0 kcal. However, this value was determined by extrapolation and has not been experimentally determined to be adequate.     The most common and plesiomorphic mechanism of food transport in tetrapods is lingual-based. Neognathous birds use this mechanism for exploiting a large diversity of food resources, whereas paleognathous birds use cranioinertial mechanism with or without tongue involvement. Food transport in three hornbills' species (Aceros cassidix, A. undulatus, and Buceros hydrocorax) is defined by a ballistic transport mechanism. Only one transport cycle is used for moving the food from the tip of the beak to the pharynx. The tongue never makes contact with the food nor is it used to expand the buccal cavity. In hornbills, filmed through high-speed video, time to food release occurred between 0.11 and 0.16 sec before time to maximum gape. The ballistic curves show similar patterns. Maximum gape angle is significantly different between the three species. Each species show a different kinematic and motor pattern of head movements associated with ballistic transport. In A. undulatus, head rotation follows a continuous pattern similar to that reported earlier in toucans. A. cassidix rotates head downward at the time of maximum gape to permit food to reach the pharynx without touching the mandible. B. hydrocorax elevates the head along the transport cycle to avoid contact with the food to the cavity of the upper beak. Selection of large food items in the diet may explain the evolutionary trend of using ballistic transport in the feeding behavior of hornbills, which play a key role in tropical forest ecology by dispersing seeds.

En la primera parte del presente estudio, a partir de ensayos punzon sobre disco, se ha determinado la relacion entre la resistencia al desgaste y la dureza de aceros para moldes obtenidos a partir de bloques de gran espesor, estudiando los principales mecanismos de desgaste que tienen lugar. A continuacion, con el fin de determinar el dano superficial que sufren los aceros para moldes en condiciones reales de inyeccion, se han estudiado distintos tipos de aceros utilizados comercialmente en moldes de inyeccion de polimeros y materiales compuestos, seleccionando las condiciones de operacion para determinar la variacion de la rugosidad superficial del acero en funcion del material inyectado, del numero de operaciones sucesivas de inyeccion y de la orientacion del flujo de inyeccion, mediante tecnicas de perfilometria optica y microscopia electronica de barrido. Ademas del dano superficial sufrido por el acero con el numero de piezas inyectadas, tambien se ha determinado la evolucion de la rugosidad superficial de los materiales inyectados, polibutilentereftalato (PBT) puro y materiales compuestos derivados de PBT por adicion de un 20 o un 50% en peso de fibra de vidrio. En el caso de las piezas inyectadas, se ha caracterizado su microestructura en funcion del flujo de inyeccion y de la densidad de fibra, se han determinado sus propiedades termicas y dinamico-mecanicas, asi como la variacion de la rugosidad superficial de las piezas inyectadas con el numero de operaciones de inyeccion y con la geometria de las distintas secciones de las piezas. Finalmente, se ha evaluado la resistencia a la abrasion de PBT reforzado con un 50% de fibra, en funcion del numero de piezas inyectadas y de la direccion de rayado con respecto a la orientacion del flujo de inyeccion.

    We have systematically characterized the Fermi/LAT 1-100GeV emission from 36 months (from 2008 August 4 to 2011 August 4) in 279 regions containing known radio SNRs, identifying sources emitting in the regions and then determining the likelihood that the source nearest the SNR is associated with it. We found 102 candidates, 30 of which have sufficient spatial overlap and significance with the alternative IEMs to suggest they are the GeV counterparts to their corresponding radio SNRs and an additional 14 candidates which may also be related to the SNRs.     New developments with bainite have resulted in a steel with an ultimate tensile strength of 1.7-2.5 GPa and a toughness in excess of 30-40 MPa m1/2. The novel microstructure is generated in a high carbon high silicon steel isothermally transformed at temperatures of 200 C-350 C. Iron does not diffuse during the transformation to bainite at this low temperature. As a result, 20-40 nm thick plates of ferrite are generated, giving rise to the exceptional properties. X-ray diffraction results indicated that the carbon concentration in the bainitic ferrite was much higher than that expected from equilibrium thermodynamics between austenite and ferrite. Atom probe tomography demonstrated that a substantial quantity of carbon (7.4 at. % C) was found to be trapped at dislocations in the vicinity of the ferrite/austenite interface. Carbon trapping at dislocations was found to prevent the decarburization of supersaturated ferrite and in some extent to alter the carbide precipitation sequence during low temperature bainite formation. These results provided the first direct observation of carbon Cottrell Atmospheres in bainitic ferrite. There are important differences in the tempering behavior of bainite and martensite. Much of the carbon precipitates as carbides or partitions from the ferrite to the remaining austenite during bainite formation. As a consequence the bainitic microstructure is less sensitive to additional tempering heat treatment. In contrast, the level of carbon in the bainitic ferrite of this novel bainitic steel is unusually high. Redistribution of alloying elements during tempering of this nanocrystalline steel has been analysed by atom probe tomography. Results suggest that retained austenite decomposes during tempering before full equilibrium is reached at the interface. Moreover, cementite precipitates from supersaturated ferrite via a paraequilibrium transformation mechanism.

    This paper shows that the nature of letters--consonant versus vowel--modulates the process of letter position assignment during visual word recognition. We recorded Event Related Potentials while participants read words in a masked priming semantic categorization task. Half of the words included a vowel as initial, third, and fifth letters (e.g., acero [steel]). The other half included a consonant as initial, third, and fifth (e.g., farol [lantern]). Targets could be preceded 1) by the initial, third, and fifth letters (relative position; e.g., aeo-acero and frl-farol), 2) by 3 consonants or vowels that did not appear in the target word (control; e.g., iui-acero and tsb-farol), or 3) by the same words (identity: acero-acero, farol-farol). The results showed modulation in 2 time windows (175-250 and 350-450 ms). Relative position primes composed of consonants produced similar effects to the identity condition. These 2 differed from the unrelated control condition, which showed a larger negativity. In contrast, relative position primes composed of vowels produced similar effects to the unrelated control condition, and these 2 showed larger negativities as compared with the identity condition. This finding has important consequences for cracking the orthographic code and developing computational models of visual word recognition.

    Introducción: El temblor puede ser un desorden incapacitante y el tratamiento de primera línea para estos pacientes es farmacológico. Sin embargo, este tratamiento puede llevar a una reducción satisfactoria del temblor en sólo el 50% de los pacientes con temblor esencial. La talamotomía era el tratamiento de elección para el temblor refractario al tratamiento médico hasta que comenzó a utilizarse la estimulación cerebral profunda (ECP) del núcleo ventral intermedio (Vim) del tálamo. En la actualidad, raramente se realiza la talamotomía. Métodos: Este artículo es una revisión no sistemática de las indicaciones, resultados, parámetros de programación y técnica quirúrgica de la ECP del Vim para el tratamiento del temblor. Resultados: Aunque los resultados clínicos son similares usando la talamotomía o la ECP del Vim, la primera causa más efectos adversos que la última. Además, la ECP puede ser usada bilateralmente, mientras que la talamotomía tiene un alto riesgo de causar disartria cuando se realiza de ambos lados. La ECP del Vim logró una adecuada mejoría del temblor en varias series de pacientes con temblor causado por temblor esencial, enfermedad de Parkinson o esclerosis múltiple. Además del Vim, hay otros blancos que están siendo usados por varios autores, tales como la zona incerta y las radiaciones prelemniscales. Conclusión: La ECP del Vim es un tratamiento útil para el temblor incapacitante refractario al tratamiento médico. Es esencial realizar una precisa selección de pacientes, así como utilizar una técnica quirúrgica correcta.     Introduccion. Aunque se dispone de diferentes tratamientos para el dolor neuropatico, en muchas ocasiones estos pacientes son refractarios, lo que hace necesario probar tratamientos que, por su utilidad en otras patologias, podrian ser eficaces en el dolor neuropatico. Pacientes y metodos. Se recogieron las historias clinicas de pacientes que hubieran sido tratados con lacosamida para el dolor neuropatico, en diferentes hospitales de la zona centro peninsular, y que cumplieran unas caracteristicas similares en cuanto a refractariedad a otros tratamientos estandares, en un seguimiento de al menos seis meses, o que hubiesen tenido que suspender el tratamiento con dicho farmaco por cualquier motivo. Se obtuvo una muestra de 114 pacientes, 61 varones y 53 mujeres, con una edad media de 60,5 años. Resultados. Las causas de dolor neuropatico mas frecuentes fueron: polineuropatia diabetica (31,6%), neuralgia postherpetica (22,8%), neuralgia del trigemino (17,5%), neuralgia suboccipital y lumbociatalgia (un 12,3% en ambas). La eficacia fue buena/muy buena en la mayoria de los pacientes, con un descenso medio en la escala analogica visual tras seis meses de 7,7 a 4,8. No se registraron efectos secundarios graves en ningun paciente, pero en 12 y 10 pacientes no hubo registro mas alla de seis meses, por ineficacia e intolerancia al tratamiento, respectivamente. Conclusiones. El tratamiento con lacosamida en el dolor neuropatico de diferentes causas podria considerarse como una alternativa efectiva y bien tolerada para aquellos pacientes que no respondan a los tratamientos estandares.

Dos casos de pacientes adultos con manifestaciones neuropsiquiatricas de un año de evolucion, refractarios a tratamiento farmacologico antipsicotico, y en quienes posteriormente aparecen crisis convulsivas parciales secundariamente generalizadas de inicio tardio. Se identifica la presencia de cisticercosis activa en el lobulo temporal en un paciente, y en la insula, en el otro. Buen control clinico posterior al tratamiento con albendazol, pero se mantiene el mismo tratamiento anticonvulsionante para considerar la pertinencia de su retirada farmacologica. Conclusiones. La neurocisticercosis activa puede ser causa de trastornos neuropsiquiatricos adquiridos y de epilepsia del lobulo temporal de inicio tardio cuando su topografia se encuentra en el circuito mesolimbico. El diagnostico etiologico oportuno y el tratamiento apropiado permiten el control adecuado de su sintomatologia y, potencialmente, su curacion definitiva.

    El osteoblastoma es un tumor óseo primario poco frecuente. Su presentación en la extremidad superior y más específicamente en los huesos carpianos es inusual. Se presenta un caso de osteoblastoma localizado en el hueso ganchoso y ser revisa el tratamiento realizado en esta infrecuente localización. Paciente varón joven con dolor y tumefacción en el dorso de la mano de un año de evolución, refractario al tratamiento médico. Las pruebas complementarias mostraron una tumoración lítica en el hueso ganchoso con características no agresivas. Fue tratado mediante curetaje y relleno con injerto autólogo de cresta ilíaca. El estudio de anatomía patológica diagnosticó que se trataba de un osteoblastoma. El resultado fue satisfactorio, con desaparición total del dolor e imagen radiológica de restitución completa del defecto óseo, sin signos de recidiva a los 4 años.El tratamiento debe ser el curetaje más injerto autólogo. En cambio, en los casos con datos agresivos se puede plantear la resección del hueso afectado.

  15. A comprehensive molecular phylogeny for the hornbills (Aves: Bucerotidae).

    The hornbills comprise a group of morphologically and behaviorally distinct Palaeotropical bird species that feature prominently in studies of ecology and conservation biology. Although the monophyly of hornbills is well established, previous phylogenetic hypotheses were based solely on mtDNA and limited sampling of species diversity. We used parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods to reconstruct relationships among all 61 extant hornbill species, based on nuclear and mtDNA gene sequences extracted largely from historical samples. The resulting phylogenetic trees closely match vocal variation across the family but conflict with current taxonomic treatments. In particular, they highlight a new arrangement for the six major clades of hornbills and reveal that three groups traditionally treated as genera (Tockus, Aceros, Penelopides) are non-monophyletic. In addition, two other genera (Anthracoceros, Ocyceros) were non-monophyletic in the mtDNA gene tree. Our findings resolve some longstanding problems in hornbill systematics, including the placement of 'Penelopides exharatus' (embedded in Aceros) and 'Tockus hartlaubi' (sister to Tropicranus albocristatus). We also confirm that an Asiatic lineage (Berenicornis) is sister to a trio of Afrotropical genera (Tropicranus [including 'Tockus hartlaubi'], Ceratogymna, Bycanistes). We present a summary phylogeny as a robust basis for further studies of hornbill ecology, evolution and historical biogeography.

  16. Fermi-LAT confirmation of enhanced gamma-ray activity from the Crab nebula

    Preliminary LAT analysis confirms the recent enhanced gamma-ray activity from the Crab nebula detected by AGILE (ATel #9586). The daily-averaged gamma-ray fluxes (E > 100 MeV) from the direction of the Crab Nebula were (4.8 +/- 0.5) x 10^-6 ph cm^-2 s^-1 (Sep 30), (3.3 +/- 0.4) x 10^-6 ph cm^-2 s^-1 (Oct 1), and (4.5 +/- 0.5) x 10^-6 ph cm^-2 s^-1 (Oct 2). These are up to a factor of ~1.8 greater than the average gamma-ray flux of (2.71 +/- 0.02) x 10^-6 ph cm^-2 s^-1 reported in the third Fermi-LAT source catalog (Acero et al. 2015, ApJS, 218, 23). All fluxes given are the sums of the pulsar and nebular emission, and with statistical uncertainties only.

  17. Discovery of a Fanaroff-Riley type 0 radio galaxy emitting at γ-ray energies

    We present supporting evidence for the first association of a Fermi source, 3FGLJ1330.0-3818, Acero et al. (2015) with the Fanaroff-Riley type 0 (FR 0) radio galaxy Tol1326-379. FR 0s represent the majority of the local population of radio-loud active galactic nuclei but their nature is still unclear. They share the same nuclear and host properties as FR Is, but they show a large deficit of extended radio emission. Here we show that FR 0s can emit photons at very high energies. Tol1326-379 has a GeV luminosity of L>1 GeV ˜ 2 × 1042 erg s-1, typical of FR Is, but with a steeper γ-ray spectrum (Γ = 2.78 ± 0.14). This could be related to the intrinsic jet properties but also to a different viewing angle.

  19. Gamma-rays from pulsar wind nebulae in starburst galaxies

    Recently, gamma-ray emission at TeV energies has been detected from the starburst galaxies NGC253 (Acero et al., 2009) [1] and M82 (Acciari et al., 2009) [2]. It has been claimed that pion production due to cosmic rays accelerated in supernova remnants interacting with the interstellar gas is responsible for the observed gamma rays. Here, we show that the gamma-ray pulsar wind nebulae left behind by the supernovae contribute to the TeV luminosity in a major way. A single pulsar wind nebula produces about ten times the total luminosity of the Sun at energies above 1 TeV during a lifetime of 105 years. A large number of 3 × 104 pulsar wind nebulae expected in a typical starburst galaxy at a distance of 4 Mpc can readily produce the observed TeV gamma rays.

    The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has observed a gamma-ray flare from a source positionally consistent with the BL Lac object TXS 2241+406 (3FGL J2244.1+4057, Acero et al. 2015, ApJS 218, 23) with coordinates RA=22h 44m 12.7311s, Dec=40d 57m 13.62s (J2000, Beasley et al. 2002, ApJS, 141, 13) with redshift z=1.171 (Shaw et al. 2012, ApJ, 748, 49). Preliminary analysis indicates that on 20 November 2015 this source was in a high-flux state, with a daily averaged gamma-ray flux (E > 100MeV) of (1.2+/-0.2) X 10^-6 photons cm^-2 s^-1 (statistical uncertainty only) and photon spectral index of 2.2+/-0.1 (errors are statistical only).

This blazar has a redshift z=0.131 (Paiano et al. 2017, ApJ, 837, 144; Bade et al. 1998, A & amp;A, 334, 459).

    The occurrence of a coccidian parasite, Cryptosporidium, among birds in the Kuala Lumpur National Zoo was investigated in this study. A hundred bird fecal samples were taken from various locations of the zoo. Fecal smears prepared using direct smear and formalin ethyl acetate concentration technique were stained with modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain. Samples positive for Cryptosporidium with Ziehl-Neelsen stain were later confirmed using the immunofluorescence technique and viewed under the epifluorescence microscope. Six species of bird feces were confirmed positive with Cryptosporidium oocysts. They included Wrinkled Hornbill (Aceros corrugatus), Great Argus Pheasant (Argusianus argus), Black Swan (Cygnus atratus), Swan Goose (Anser cygnoides), Marabou Stork (Leptoptilos crumeniferus), and Moluccan Cockatoo (Cacatua moluccencis). These birds were located in the aviary and lake, with the Moluccan Cockatoo routinely used as a show bird. Results obtained in this study indicated that animal sanctuaries like zoos and bird parks are important sources of Cryptosporidium infection to humans, especially children and other animals.

  3. Intraspecific rearrangement of duplicated mitochondrial control regions in the Luzon Tarictic Hornbill Penelopides manillae (Aves: Bucerotidae).

    Philippine hornbills of the genera Aceros and Penelopides (Bucerotidae) are known to possess a large tandemly duplicated fragment in their mitochondrial genome, whose paralogous parts largely evolve in concert. In the present study, we surveyed the two distinguishable duplicated control regions in several individuals of the Luzon Tarictic Hornbill Penelopides manillae, compare their characteristics within and across individuals, and report on an intraspecific mitochondrial gene rearrangement found in one single specimen, i.e., an interchange between the two control regions. To our knowledge, this is the first observation of two distinct mitochondrial genome rearrangements within a bird species. We briefly discuss a possible evolutionary mechanism responsible for this pattern, and highlight potential implications for the application of control region sequences as a marker in population genetics and phylogeography.

    Introduccion. El 23-25% de los niños epilepticos son refractarios a farmacos antiepilepticos. El interes por la dieta cetogenica como tratamiento en estos pacientes no candidatos a otras opciones terapeuticas ha resurgido ultimamente. Objetivo. Valorar la eficacia y seguridad del tratamiento con dieta cetogenica en un importante numero de pacientes pediatricos con epilepsia refractaria en nuestro centro y determinar si los resultados obtenidos corroboran otros de publicacion reciente. Pacientes y metodos. Se revisaron retrospectivamente las historias clinicas de 41 niños con epilepsia refractaria que fueron tratados con dieta cetogenica entre 1998 y 2011, la mayoria con dieta tipo Radcliffe II. La mediana de edad al inicio de la dieta fue de 3,92 años. Resultados. A los seis meses del inicio de la dieta se redujeron las crisis en al menos un 50% en un 36,84% de la muestra (el 10,53% de los niños alcanzo mas de un 90% de reduccion y un 5,26% quedo sin crisis). Aproximadamente un 50% por grupo de edad en los mas pequeños respondio de manera positiva. Un 58,54% de los pacientes presento algun efecto secundario, tolerable y transitorio, principalmente elevacion de los niveles de colesterol y estreñimiento, sin observarse variacion en los parametros antropometricos. Conclusiones. La dieta cetogenica supone una buena alternativa terapeutica en los casos de epilepsia refractaria en la edad pediatrica, con mayor probabilidad de beneficio cuanto menor sea la edad del niño al inicio de la dieta. En general, es bien tolerada. Son de gran importancia en estos pacientes las revisiones periodicas con control nutricional.

    Introduccion. La mayor parte de las guias de practica clinica consultadas coinciden en señalar que los antidepresivos triciclicos, duales (venlafaxina/duloxetina), antiepilepticos gabapentina/pregabalina, apositos de lidocaina al 5% y parches de capsaicina al 8% constituyen los farmacos de primera linea en el tratamiento del dolor neuropatico periferico, y el tramadol y algunos opioides potentes (morfina, oxicodona y tapentadol) son farmacos de segunda linea. Por otra parte, la prevalencia de dolor neuropatico refractario al tratamiento se acerca al 1,5% de la poblacion, de forma que se calcula que un 50% de los pacientes no responde al tratamiento prescrito. Existen otros antiepilepticos que no tienen indicacion en el dolor neuropatico por las agencias reguladoras, como la lamotrigina, el topiramato o la oxcarbacepina, pero se utilizan en la practica clinica habitual fuera de indicacion. Desarrollo. Tras una busqueda bibliografica, se realizo una revision sobre el empleo de la lacosamida en el dolor neuropatico, tanto en distintos modelos animales como en diferentes estudios en humanos. Conclusiones. El tratamiento con lacosamida en el dolor neuropatico de diferentes etiologias podria considerarse como una alternativa efectiva para los pacientes que no respondan o no toleren los tratamientos estandares. Sin embargo, la mayor parte de la evidencia disponible, a excepcion de los ensayos clinicos en fase II/III realizados en el dolor neuropatico diabetico, corresponde a estudios abiertos y observacionales, sin grupo control y con bajo numero de pacientes, pero los resultados favorables obtenidos invitan a seguir investigando la utilidad de la lacosamida en el dolor neuropatico.

The new coatings reduce the abrasive wear in the magnesium-aluminium alloy but they are not effective in the magnesium-zinc alloy, which prevent the formation of continuous coatings. Los liquidos ionicos son sales liquidas a temperatura ambiente o bajas temperaturas que presentan excelentes propiedades fisico-quimicas. En el presente trabajo se estudian como lubricantes en problemas tribologicos complejos como la lubricacion de metales contra si mismos, el desarrollo de lubricantes base agua y de nuevas superficies autolubricadas. Cuando no es posible reducir la friccion y desgaste mediante lubricacion, como en las aleaciones de magnesio, los liquidos ionicos se han estudiado como precursores de recubrimientos protectores. Se han determinado las interacciones superficiales y los procesos de corrosion sobre cobre y sobre acero con diferentes liquidos ionicos proticos y aproticos para desarrollar nuevos lubricantes y aditivos. En el contacto cobre/cobre, excepto el liquido ionico protico derivado del oleato, todos los liquidos ionicos estudiados presentan mejor comportamiento tribologico que el lubricante comercial Polialfaolefina 6. En el contacto acero/zafiro, los nuevos liquidos ionicos proticos son buenos lubricantes cuando se utilizan en estado puro, y, como aditivos en agua, generan peliculas adsorbidas sobre la superficie del metal reduciendo la friccion y el desgaste tras la evaporacion del agua. Para evitar el periodo de alta friccion inicial en presencia de agua, se han generado peliculas superficiales de liquido ionico sobre el acero en condiciones estaticas. El mejor comportamiento lubricante tanto en el contacto cobre/cobre como en el contacto acero/zafiro se obtiene para el liquido ionico protico derivado del anion adipato, con dos grupos carboxilicos.     Introducción. La lacosamida es un fármaco antiepiléptico bloqueante de los canales de sodio, autorizado en adolescentes y adultos como tratamiento coadyuvante en crisis de inicio focal. Objetivo. Analizar los resultados de eficacia y seguridad de la lacosamida en Galicia en su uso de acuerdo con la práctica clínica habitual. Pacientes y métodos. Estudio retrospectivo observacional en pacientes que iniciaron tratamiento con lacosamida entre enero de 2013 y junio de 2014 en 10 hospitales de Galicia. Se evaluó su eficacia y seguridad a los 3, 6 y 12 meses del inicio del tratamiento. Resultados. Se incluyeron 184 pacientes con edad media de 44,2 ± 17,4 años; el 56,5% (n = 104) eran varones. Conforman la población de eficacia 173 pacientes. El tiempo medio de evolución de la epilepsia fue de 18,8 ± 15,5 años. La frecuencia de crisis era de 2,5 ± 1,6 episodios/mes. A los 12 meses, el 68,2% de los pacientes (n = 118) presentaba una mejoría igual o superior al 50% (pacientes respondedores) y, de ellos, 54 (el 45,8% de los respondedores) estaban libres de crisis. El 23,4% (n = 43) refirió efectos adversos a los 12 meses, principalmente mareos (10,3%) e inestabilidad (3,3%). Después de la visita de los 12 meses, continuaba con lacosamida el 87,5% de los pacientes (n = 161). Conclusiones. La lacosamida ofrece un perfil de eficacia y seguridad muy favorable para pacientes con epilepsia focal refractaria. El elevado porcentaje de respondedores podría atribuirse a una población de epilépticos menos refractarios que en otros estudios de práctica clínica. Constituye una opción terapéutica atractiva para el tratamiento de epilepsias de inicio focal.

    Development of pulmonary hypertension is a common and deadly complication of interstitial lung disease. Little is known regarding the cellular and molecular mechanisms that lead to pulmonary hypertension in patients with interstitial lung disease, and effective treatment options are lacking. The purpose of this study was to examine the adenosine 2B receptor (A2BR) as a regulator of vascular remodeling and pulmonary hypertension secondary to pulmonary fibrosis. To accomplish this, cellular and molecular changes in vascular remodeling were monitored in mice exposed to bleomycin in conjunction with genetic removal of the A2BR or treatment with the A2BR antagonist GS-6201. Results demonstrated that GS-6201 treatment or genetic removal of the A2BR attenuated vascular remodeling and hypertension in our model. Furthermore, direct A2BR activation on vascular cells promoted interleukin-6 and endothelin-1 release. Preliminary analysis indicates that on 2016 July 11, PKS 0403-13 was in a high state with a daily averaged gamma-ray flux (E > 100 MeV) of (1.6+/-0.3) X 10^-6 photons cm^-2 s^-1 (statistical uncertainty only), about 140 times greater than its four-year average flux reported in the third Fermi-LAT source catalog (3FGL, Acero et al. 2015, ApJS, 218, 23). The corresponding daily averaged spectral photon index (E > 100 MeV) of 2.3+/-0.2 (statistical uncertainty only) is compatible with the 3FGL catalog value of 2.35+/-0.11.

    The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has observed increasing gamma-ray flux and an unusually hard spectrum from a source positionally consistent with the flat spectrum radio quasar PKS B1035-281 (also known as 3FGL J1037.5-2821, Acero et al. 2015, ApJS, 218, 23) with radio coordinates R.A.: 159.4269058 deg, Dec: -28.3844750 deg (J2000, Beasley et al. 2002, ApJS, 141, 13) at redshift z=1.066 (Shaw et al. 2012, ApJ, 748, 49). Preliminary analysis indicates that on 24 February 2016 this source was in a high-flux state, with a daily averaged gamma-ray flux (E > 100MeV) of (0.7+/-0.1) X 10^-6 photons cm^-2 s^-1 (statistical uncertainty only) corresponding to a flux increase of a factor of about 30 over its four-year average flux (3FGL J1037.5-2821).

    We select 35 known extragalactic TeV sources which are located at Galactic latitude |b|>=10° and whose low activity state flux is available, since our aim is to give conservative constraints on the total cosmic gamma-ray background (CGB) in the TeV band. For each source, we select the lowest fluxes among several TeV measurements by modern imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs; H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS) and further restrict samples showing no significant variability in the TeV band during observations. The sample contains 30 blazars, 3 radio galaxies, and 2 starburst galaxies from the default TeVcat catalog (Wakely & Horan 2008ICRC....3.1341W) which include published sources only. We also include the Fermi third source (3FGL) catalog data (Acero et al. 2015, J/ApJS/218/23) to cover GeV gamma-ray spectra. The 3FGL catalog is based on its first 48 months of survey data. All of our sample have counterparts in the 3FGL catalog. (2 data files).

    The Large Area Telescope (LAT), one of the two instruments on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, has observed increasing gamma-ray flux from a source positionally consistent with the flat spectrum radio quasar PKS 2023-07 (also known as NRAO 629, TXS 2022-077, 3EG J2025-0744, 1AGLR J2027-0747 and 3FGL J2025.6-0736), with radio counterpart position R.A.: 306.419418 deg, Dec.: -7.597969 deg (J2000.0, Beasley et al. 2002, ApJS, 141, 13) and with redshift z=1.388 (Drinkwater et al. 1997, MNRAS, 284, 85). Preliminary analysis indicates that on 2016 April 9, PKS 2023-07 was in a high state with a daily averaged gamma-ray flux (E > 100 MeV) of (2.0+/-0.3) X 10^-6 photons cm^-2 s^-1 (statistical uncertainty only), about 16 times greater than its four-year average flux reported in the third Fermi-LAT source catalog (3FGL, Acero et al. 2015, ApJS, 218, 23). The corresponding daily averaged spectral photon index (E > 100 MeV) of 2.4+/-0.2 (statistical uncertainty only) is compatible with the 3FGL catalog value of 2.18+/-0.03.

    The Large Area Telescope (LAT), on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, has observed gamma-ray flaring activity from a source positionally consistent with the flat spectrum radio quasar S5 1044+71 (also known as 3FGL J1048.4+7144, Acero et al. 2015, ApJS 218, 23) with radio coordinates R.A: 10h48m27.6199s, Dec: +71d43m35.938s (J2000; Johnston et al. 1995, AJ, 110, 880) and redshift z=1.15 (Polatidis et al. 1995, ApJS, 98, 1). Preliminary results indicate that S5 1044+71 showed a marked increase in activity on 2016 December 29, with a daily flux (E > 100 MeV) of (1.1+/-0.2) x10^-6 ph cm^-2 s^-1 (errors are statistical only) which is a factor of about 16 greater than the average flux reported in the third Fermi LAT catalog (3FGL).

    Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a lethal, fibroproliferative disease. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) can develop secondary to IPF and increase mortality. Alternatively, activated macrophages (AAMs) contribute to the pathogenesis of both IPF and PH. Here we hypothesized that adenosine signaling through the ADORA2B on AAMs impacts the progression of these disorders and that conditional deletion of ADORA2B on myeloid cells would have a beneficial effect in a model of these diseases. Conditional knockout mice lacking ADORA2B on myeloid cells (Adora2Bf/f-LysMCre) were exposed to the fibrotic agent bleomycin (BLM; 0.035 U/g body weight, i.p.). At 14, 17, 21, 25, or 33 d after exposure, SpO2, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and histologic analyses were performed. On day 33, lung function and cardiovascular analyses were determined. Markers for AAM and mediators of fibrosis and PH were assessed. Adora2Bf/f-LysMCre mice presented with attenuated fibrosis, improved lung function, and no evidence of PH compared with control mice exposed to BLM. These findings were accompanied by reduced expression of CD206 and arginase-1, markers for AAMs. A 10-fold reduction in IL-6 and a 5-fold decrease in hyaluronan, both linked to lung fibrosis and PH, were also observed.     The Visayan Tarictic Hornbill (Penelopides panini) and the Walden's Hornbill (Aceros waldeni) are two threatened hornbill species endemic to the western islands of the Visayas that constitute - between Luzon and Mindanao - the central island group of the Philippine archipelago. In order to evaluate their genetic diversity and to support efforts towards their conservation, we analyzed genetic variation in ~ 600 base pairs (bp) of the mitochondrial control region I and at 12-19 nuclear microsatellite loci. The sampling covered extant populations, still occurring only on two islands (P. panini: Panay and Negros, A. waldeni: only Panay), and it was augmented with museum specimens of extinct populations from neighboring islands. For comparison, their less endangered (= more abundant) sister taxa, the Luzon Tarictic Hornbill (P. manillae) from the Luzon and Polillo Islands and the Writhed Hornbill (A. leucocephalus) from Mindanao Island, were also included in the study. We reconstructed the population history of the two Penelopides species and assessed the genetic population structure of the remaining wild populations in all four species. Mitochondrial and nuclear data concordantly show a clear genetic separation according to the island of origin in both Penelopides species, but also unravel sporadic over-water movements between islands. We found evidence that deforestation in the last century influenced these migratory events. Both classes of markers and the comparison to museum specimens reveal a genetic diversity loss in both Visayan hornbill species, P. panini and A. waldeni, as compared to their more abundant relatives. This might have been caused by local extinction of genetically differentiated populations together with the dramatic decline in the abundance of the extant populations.   18. A molecular dynamics study of the packing structures in monolayers of partially fluorinated amphiphiles

    We report the results of molecular dynamics simulations of liquid-supported monolayers of three partially fluorinated amphiphile molecules, namely CF3(CF2)9CH2COOH, CF3(CF2)6CH2(CF2)3COOH, and CF3(CF2)6(CH2)4COOH. These studies were undertaken to provide information on the interplay between molecular flexibility and the packing structure in a monolayer so as to better interpret the results of recent experiments. The qualitative aspects of the predictions of the simulations are consistent with the recent experimental data for monolayers of CF3(CF2)9CH2COOH [S. W. Barton, A. Goudot, O. Boulassa, F. Rondelez, B. Lin, F. Novak, A. Acero, and S. A. Rice, J. Chem. Phys. 96, xxx (1992)]. In particular, the observed breakup of the homogeneous ordered monolayer into ordered islands with the same collective tilt of the molecules is correctly predicted, and the fact that the collective tilt angle is small is correctly predicted. However, the experimental and theoretical values of the tilt angles are not in quantitative agreement, which we attribute to the inadequacy of the atom-atom potentials used in the simulations. In general, for monolayers of CF3(CF2)9CH2COOH we find that the collective tilt angle predicted is a sensitive function of the area per molecule and is smaller than in monolayers of alkane alcohols and alkane acids. The results of the simulations of monolayers of other partially fluorinated species suggest that the difference in size between the fluorocarbon segments and the smaller head groups or flexible ``spacer'' CH2 segments can generate subtle changes in the packing structure of a monolayer and the relative stabilities of the untilted and tilted structures.

  19. Identifying the crystallinity, phase, and arsenic uptake of the nanomineral schwertmannite using analytical high resolution transmission electron microscopy

    Schwertmannite, an iron oxyhydroxide sulfate nanomineral, plays a significant role in the geochemistry of acid mine drainage (AMD) as a metastable phase with respect to goethite and by retaining toxic metals, e.g. arsenic [1]. Schwertmannite’s characteristic morphology is needles 100-300 nm long and only 5-10 nm in diameter extending from a dense aggregate. The poorly-and nano-crystalline nature of this mineral requires using high resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM) to be fully characterized. We used HRTEM to identify the polyphasic nature of natural samples of schwertmannite collected from the Iberian Pyrite Belt in Spain. In order to analyze the dense core, samples were prepared in thin section using an ultramicrotome. Data on a sample identified as pure schwertmannite through powder XRD shows the presence of 5-10 nm goethite nanocrystals making up a significant portion of one of the nanoneedle tips (Figure 1). These nanocrystals exhibit lattice fringes and faceted surfaces, both of which match that expected for goethite. The great majority of the nanoneedles are poorly-crystalline (no lattice fringes) with atomically rough surfaces which may be highly active in the uptake of As. The presence of a range of phases and crystallinities in this sample demonstrate incipient stages of the mechanism that results in transformation of schwertmannite to goethite. Further analytical TEM analyses will help us track sorption/desorption, as well as the specific locations of As within these materials upon initial formation, as well as during transformation.   20. Recruitment of hornbill-dispersed trees in hunted and logged forests of the Indian Eastern Himalaya.

    Hunting of hornbills by tribal communities is widespread in logged foothill forests of the Indian Eastern Himalaya. We investigated whether the decline of hornbills has affected the dispersal and recruitment of 3 large-seeded tree species. We hypothesized that 2 low-fecundity tree species, Chisocheton paniculatus and Dysoxylum binectariferum (Meliaceae) bearing arillate fruits, are more dispersal limited than a prolifically fruiting drupaceous tree Polyalthia simiarum (Annonaceae), which has potential dispersers other than hornbills. We estimated the abundance of large avian frugivores during the fruiting season along transects in 2 protected and 2 disturbed forests. We compared recruitment of the tree species near (<10 m) and far (10-40 m) from parent trees at protected and disturbed sites. Median abundance of Great (Buceros bicornis), Wreathed (Aceros undulatus), and Oriental Pied Hornbills (Anthracoceros albirostris) were significantly lower in disturbed forests, but sites did not differ in abundances of the Mountain Imperial Pigeon (Ducula badia). Overall, tree species showed more severely depressed recruitment of seedlings (77% fewer) and juveniles (69% fewer) in disturbed than in protected forests. In disturbed forests, 93% fewer seedlings of C. paniculatus were beyond parental crowns, and a high number of all seedlings (42%) accumulated directly under reproductive adults. In contrast, D. binectariferum and P. simiarum were recruitment rather than dispersal limited, with fewer dispersed seedlings surviving in disturbed than in protected forests. Results are consistent with the idea that disturbance disrupts mutualisms between hornbills and some large-seeded food plants, with the caveat that role redundancy within even small and specialized disperser assemblages renders other tree species less vulnerable to loss of regular dispersal agents.

  1. Estimation of Future Return Levels for Heavy Rainfall in the Iberian Peninsula: Comparison of Methodologies

In this study, we compare different ways to estimate future return levels for heavy rainfall, based on the statistical extreme value theory. Both Peaks over Threshold (POT) and block maxima with the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution will be used and their results compared when linear trends are assumed in the parameters: threshold and scale parameter for POT and location and scale parameter for GEV. But rainfall over the IP is a special variable in that a large number of the values are 0. Thus, the impact of taking this into account is discussed too. Another approach is then tested, based on the evolutions of the mean and variance obtained from the time series of rainy days only, and of the number of rainy days. A statistical test, similar to that designed for temperature in Parey et al. 2013, is used to assess if the trends in extremes can be considered as mostly due to these evolutions when considering only rainy days. The results show that it is mainly the case: the extremes of the residuals, after removing the trends in mean and standard deviation, cannot be differentiated from those of a stationary process. Thus, the future return levels can be estimated from the stationary return level of these residuals and an estimation of the future mean and standard deviation. Moreover, an estimation of the future number of rainy days is used to retrieve the return levels for all days. All of these comparisons are made for an ensemble of high quality rainfall time series observed in the Iberian Peninsula over the period 1961-2010, from which we want to estimate a 20-year

    before the onset of a cake. These facts put in evidence the important role of electrical charges in filtration processes with ceramic membranes (Chiu, 2011; S. Lee & Kim, 2014; Szymczyk, Fievet, Reggiani, & Pagetti, 1998b). In the ozonation side, it was confirmed that natural waters with high NOM content (>3 mg/L) trigger advanced oxidation processes (Acero & Von Gunten, 2001). It was also found that condition pH 6.5 showed higher NOM decomposition than condition pH 8.5 at the highest ozone dose used.

    Starting with the 2cm Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) survey in 1994 (Kellermann et al. 1998AJ....115.1295K), and continuing with the MOJAVE (Monitoring of Jets in Active Galactic Nuclei with VLBA Experiments) program (Lister et al. 2009, Cat. J/AJ/137/3718), we have carried out multi-epoch VLBA observations of several hundred of the brightest, most compact radio sources in the northern sky. In this paper, we present 1625 VLBA 15GHz contour maps of 295 AGNs for epochs between 1994 August 31 and 2013 August 20 that have not previously appeared in any paper from the MOJAVE (Lister & Homan 2005, Cat. J/AJ/130/1389; Lister et al. 2009, Cat. J/AJ/137/3718; Lister et al. 2013, Cat. J/AJ/146/120) or 2cm VLBA surveys (Kellermann et al. 1998AJ....115.1295K; Zensus et al. 2002AJ....124..662Z). These AGNs (see Table1) are from one or more of the following: the MOJAVE low-luminosity sample (Lister et al. 2013, Cat. J/AJ/146/120), the complete flux density-limited MOJAVE 1.5Jy sample (Lister et al. 2015, Cat. J/ApJ/810/L9), the VLBA 2cm survey (Kellermann et al. 1998AJ....115.1295K), the third EGRET gamma-ray catalog (Hartman et al. 1999, Cat. J/ApJS/123/79), or the 3FGL Fermi gamma-ray catalog (Acero et al. 2015, Cat. J/ApJS/218/23). Also included are some AGNs that were originally candidates for these samples, but did not meet the final selection criteria. We list the parameters of the contour maps in Table2. We modeled the (u, v) visibility data in Difmap (Shepherd 1997ASPC..125...77S) using a set of Gaussian features, which we list in Table3. We analyzed the kinematics of the robust Gaussian jet features in our sample using two methods. The results of these analyses are listed separately in Tables 4 and 5, respectively. (6 data files).

  4. Full mitochondrial genome sequences of two endemic Philippine hornbill species (Aves: Bucerotidae) provide evidence for pervasive mitochondrial DNA recombination

    Background Although nowaday it is broadly accepted that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) may undergo recombination, the frequency of such recombination remains controversial. Its estimation is not straightforward, as recombination under homoplasmy (i.e., among identical mt genomes) is likely to be overlooked. In species with tandem duplications of large mtDNA fragments the detection of recombination can be facilitated, as it can lead to gene conversion among duplicates. Although the mechanisms for concerted evolution in mtDNA are not fully understood yet, recombination rates have been estimated from "one per speciation event" down to 850 years or even "during every replication cycle". Results Here we present the first complete mt genome of the avian family Bucerotidae, i.e., that of two Philippine hornbills, Aceros waldeni and Penelopides panini. The mt genomes are characterized by a tandemly duplicated region encompassing part of cytochrome b, 3 tRNAs, NADH6, and the control region. The duplicated fragments are identical to each other except for a short section in domain I and for the length of repeat motifs in domain III of the control region. Due to the heteroplasmy with regard to the number of these repeat motifs, there is some size variation in both genomes; with around 21,657 bp (A. waldeni) and 22,737 bp (P. panini), they significantly exceed the hitherto longest known avian mt genomes, that of the albatrosses. We discovered concerted evolution between the duplicated fragments within individuals. The existence of differences between individuals in coding genes as well as in the control region, which are maintained between duplicates, indicates that recombination apparently occurs frequently, i.e., in every generation. Conclusions The homogenised duplicates are interspersed by a short fragment which shows no sign of recombination. We hypothesize that this region corresponds to the so-called Replication Fork Barrier (RFB), which has been described from the chicken

Sin embargo un pequeño porcentaje es capaz de formar nuevas moléculas. Si el ion queda implantado en el hielo y es reactivo (H+, C+,ldots) podría formar parte de una molécula nueva que incorpora un átomo que inicialmente no se encontraba presente en el hielo. También se presentará un contraejemplo para demostrar que no es posible asegurar que siempre que implantemos un ion reactivo, éste formará parte de nuevas moléculas en la mezcla. También se presentará la formación de nuevas moléculas a partir de la irradiación de hielos de metano, que llevan a la formación de otros compuestos como acetileno, eteno, etano,... en los cuales la relación C/H ha variado. Además de estos compuestos se forma también un residuo carbonoso (refractario) que es estable a temperatura ambiente y cuya composición química no es bien conocida. Por último, el aumento de la temperatura de sublimación es también una consecuencia de la irradiación, aunque la magnitud del aumento depende de la mezcla original y de la irradiación sufrida. Existen moléculas que llegan a variar su temperatura de sublimación en decenas de grados. Para el caso de moléculas carbonadas se forman especies por irradiación que son estables a temperatura ambiente. Con todo ello se muestra que los experimentos de laboratorio pueden ayudarnos a comprender la formación, destrucción y variación de las propiedades físicas de los hielos de interés astrofísico con la irradiación.

  7. Estudio de la influencia de la refrigeracion con aire de forma natural e inducida en el comportamiento de instalaciones fotovoltaicas

The presented research provides a deep knowledge of how they work as well as information and results for an improvement in future designs of building integrated photovoltaic systems. Este estudio se centra en analizar la influencia negativa de la temperatura en la produccion electrica de paneles fotovoltaicos al estar emplazados sobre cubierta de acero, como sucede en naves industriales y sobre un invernadero. Se estudian diferentes configuraciones que permitan refrigerar los paneles, reduciendo su temperatura y mejorar su rendimiento. Para abordar este problema, se han construido dos instalaciones experimentales, fieles a plantas solares en funcionamiento. Una instalacion engloba dos paneles fotovoltaicos sobre estructura fija al suelo. Uno de los paneles esta integrado sobre una superficie paralela y metalica. Entre ambas superficies existe un espacio que posibilita circular aire, permitiendo refrigerar el panel por conveccion natural, o conveccion forzada impulsando el aire con un ventilador. El otro panel, libre por su cara posterior y se ha considerado de referencia. Se ha estudiado el comportamiento del panel integrado sobre cubierta para diferentes secciones de aire y velocidades inducidas, comparandolo con el panel de referencia. Se ha desarrollado un modelo experimental que nos permite determinar la temperatura del panel en funcion de las variables que influyen en su refrigeracion. Adicionalmente, se han analizado los datos de una planta solar en funcionamiento, con paneles de igual caracteristicas, obteniendo correlaciones entre la temperatura del panel y las variables electricas y comparandolos con las obtenidas en la instalacion experimental. La segunda instalacion experimental reproduce parte de una instalacion solar sobre un invernadero, formada por cuatro paneles fotovoltaicos colocados sobre el plastico del invernadero, existiendo un canal divergente entre ambas superficies.
