  1. The role of input frequency and semantic transparency in the acquisition of verb meaning: evidence from placement verbs in Tamil and Dutch.

    We investigate how Tamil- and Dutch-speaking adults and four- to five-year-old children use caused posture verbs ('lay/stand a bottle on a table') to label placement events in which objects are oriented vertically or horizontally. Tamil caused posture verbs consist of morphemes that individually label the causal and result subevents (nikka veyyii 'make stand'; paDka veyyii 'make lie'), occurring in situational and discourse contexts where object orientation is at issue. Dutch caused posture verbs are less semantically transparent: they are monomorphemic (zetten 'set/stand'; leggen 'lay'), often occurring in contexts where factors other than object orientation determine use. Caused posture verbs occur rarely in Tamil input corpora; in Dutch input, they are used frequently. Elicited production data reveal that Tamil four-year-olds use infrequent placement verbs appropriately whereas Dutch children use high-frequency placement verbs inappropriately even at age five. Semantic transparency exerts a stronger influence than input frequency in constraining children's verb meaning acquisition.

  2. Comparison of two CDMAM generations with respect to dose sensitivity

    A contrast-detail phantom like the CDMAM phantom (Artinis Medical Systems, Zetten, NL) is suggested by the 'European protocol for the quality control of the physical and technical aspects of mammography screening' to evaluate image quality of digital mammography systems. In a recent paper the commonly used CDMAM 3.4 was evaluated according to its dose sensitivity in comparison to other phantoms. The successor phantom (CDMAM 4.0) features other disc diameters and thicknesses that were adapted to be more closely to the image quality which can be found in modern mammography systems. It seems to be obvious to compare this two generations of phantoms with respect to a potential improvement. The time-current product was varied within a range of clinically used values (40-160 mAs). Image evaluation was performed using the automatic evaluation software provided by Artinis. The relative dose sensitivity was compared in dependence of different diameters. Additionally, the IQFinv parameter, which averages over the diameters was computed to get a more global conclusion. We found that the dose is of a considerable smoother dependence with the CMDAM 4.0 phantom. Also the IQFinv parameter shows a more linear behaviour than with the CDMAM 3.4. As the automatic evaluation shows different results on the two phantoms, conversion factors from automatic to human readouts have to be adapted consequently.

  3. The Local Group in LCDM - Shapes and masses of dark halos

    In dit proefschrift bestuderen we de eigenschappen van donkere materie halo's in het LCDM paradigma. Het eerste deel richt zich op de vorm van de massadistributie van dergelijke objecten. We hebben gevonden dat de vorm van ge"isoleerde Melkweg-achtige donkere materie halo's significant afwijkt van bolsymmetrie. De lokale omgeving heeft invloed op de halo's en deze worden daarbij sterk be"invloed door de manier waarop massa aangroeit. We hebben ook de structuur en de baanstructuur van de satellieten van dergelijke halo's in detail onderzocht. In het algemeen zijn deze objecten sferischer dan de halo's zelf. Ze vertonen ook duidelijke afdrukken van getijdenwerking in zowel hun geometrische vorm als in de baanstructuur. Daarna gebruiken we het aantal massieve objecten rond de Melkweg om limieten te zetten op de totale massa van de donkere materie halo van de Melkweg. De eigenschappen van de massaverdeling van de Melkweg worden verder onderzocht in het laatste hoofdstuk. Daar maken we gebruik van de Sagittarius sterstroom om de vorm van de galactische potentiaal beter te bepalen. We komen met een nieuw model dat rekening houdt met de galactische schijf en de invloed van satellietstelsels en die bovendien consistent is met het LCDM paradigma.
