The G(total acid) values obtained indicated that, from 0 to 60 wt, % TBP, the acid produc tion rate is proportional to wt, % TBP; above 60 wt, % TBP the acid production rate is lower. Normalized total acid G values, obtained by partition of the dose on a basis of wt, % TBP, ranged from 2.31 to 3.52. Seven TBP-Amsco solutions, ranging from 5 to 60 wt. % TBP, and samples of puremore » TBP and pure dibutyl phenylphosphorate (DBPP) were irradiated to 400 whr/liter, Five compositions of TBP, DBPP, Amsco, and tetralin were irradiated to 200 whr/liter. The amount of radiationinduced unsataration was measured for each of the above samples. The data indicated that unsaturation varied inversely with wt. % TBP. The DBPP exerted a small protective effect, as did tetralin, in reducing radiation damage to the Amsco. Diethyl carbonate, irradiated to 392 whr/liter, had a G(gas) value of 4.86, a--G (target destruction) value of 5.50, and a --G /sub M/(polymer) value of 2.80. Diethyl carbonate, after irradiation, extracts U better than virgin material and strips equally as well. The irradiated diethyl carbonate exhibited no difference from virgin material in emulsification tendency. Dibutyl phenylphosphorate-Amsco systems, at dose levels of either 200 or 400 whr/liter, showed that acid production is about proportioral to wt. % DBPP. Studies of DBPP-Amsco-tetralin systems at 200 whr/ liter indicated that tetralin is more acceptable than decalin for enhancing the solubility of the DBPP-uranium complex in Amsco, thus suppressing third-phase phenomena. Tetralin also reduced acid production from DBPP under irradiation. Tributyl phosphate, dibutyl phosphoric acid, and di-(2- ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid were irradiated in the pure state to 300 whr/liter. The G(gas) values were 1.9, 3.3, and 3.1, respectively, and the G(total acid) values were 2.3, 2.1, and 1.2. The--G values for target converted to polymer were 0.22 for the DBP, and 0.32 for the D2EHP. Tri-n-octyl phosphine oxide was irradiated in the pure state to 400 whr/liter. The G(gas) value of 1.82 was comparable to a value of 1.45 found previously at 2040 whr/1iter. Values of --G/ sub M/ for target and polymer were approximately double the values previously found at 2040 whr/ liter. Amines, including tri-lauryl amine, n-benzyl heptadecyl amine, tri-iso-octyl amine, Primene JM-T, and tri-oetyl-decyl-t-amine (Alamine) were irradiated to either 200- or 400-whr/liter doses. The Primene produced the lowest --G (polymer) value, (1.50) and the Alamine produced the highest -- G/sub M/(total target destroyed) value (3.49). An Alamine-tridecanol- Amsconitric acid system yielded the lowest G(gas) value (1.89) while the corresponding tri-lauryl amine system produced the highest (3.12). The most extensive emulsification occurred with the 0.5M tri-lauryl amtne-Amscotridecanol system while the n-benzyl heptadecyl amine system exhtbited the lowest emulsification tendency, The most efficient U extractant system observed was the Alamine-Amsco-tridecanol-nitric acid composition, at the 0.5M-Alamine level. A comparison was made of the quantity and composition of material removed from irradiated TBP-Amsco by various scrubbing media. A single scrub with 2M NaOH appears four times more efftcient than does a single scrub with satarated CaOH in removing acidic radiolysis products. The emulsification tendency of the scrubbed organic appears to increase with the quantity of acidic radiolysis products removed.     Preliminary studies were completed on the nature and amount of the radiolysis products of dibutyl butanephosphonate, 50% dibutyl butanephosphonate- 50% Amsco 12582 mixture, diamyl pentanephosphonate, 50% diamyl pentanephosphonate- 50% Amsco 125-82 mixture, high level dose TBP, and dibutyl phosphoric acid, Results of analysis indicated that aliphatic phosphonates are superior to aliphatic phosphates, but inferior to aromaticaliphatic phosphonates in resistance to radiolytic degradation. Radiolysis data indicated that the phenyl group of phosphonates inhibited gas production when irradiated alone or in Amsco solution, howevcr the phenyl protective effect did not apply to acid production. Alipbatic phosphonates yielded lower G(acid) values than didmore » phenyl phosphonates, No large differences were observed in nature or yield of radiolysis products from the phosphonates. Comparison of radiolysis data of tributyl phosphate with that of aliphatic phosphonates, however, indicates reductions in G(gas) and G(acid) values of factors of 2 and 15, respectively due to the radiolytic stability of the phosphonate structure. Emulsification studies, comparing irradiated TBP and phosphonates, indicated no marked differences between the systems studied. The interpretation of results was complicated by the prevalence of three-phase phenomena due to the high dose levels employed. Tributyl phosphate, irradiated to 1900 whr/liter levels, was studied from the aspects of methods suitable for removal of radiolysis products, methods suitable for isolation of polymeric species, and identification of polymer constituents, Treatment of 1900 whr/liter TBP, diluted with Amsco 125-82 and virgin TBP, with a mixture of sodium and ammonium hydroxides was found to be more effective than simple caustic strip for restoring irradiated TBP to recycle condition. The effectiveness of the treatment was determined by measuring uranium distribution ratios using both spinner column and separatory funnel studies, Duolite A-2 anion exchange resin was used to remove acidic radiolysis products from 1900 whr/liter TBP prior to isolation of polymeric species by vacuum distillation, A G value of 0.91 for polymer was obtained. Cryoscopic studies with the polymer indicated a gross molecular weight of 840 to 850. G values for gas and polymer of 3.40 and 1.42 were obtained from irradiation of dibutyl phosphoric acid to 1280 whr/liter levels. These values are slightly higher than the corresponding values for tributyl phosphate. The solubility of thorium dibutyl phosphate in Amsco 125-82 was determined to be 0.1 g/liter at 26 C. Diethyl carbonate was evaluated as an extractant for uranium by separatory funnel and spinner column studies. The extraction is highly acid dependent and is sensitive to salt effects. Using 0.2M uranyl nitrate of both 6M and 8M nitric acid strengths as feeds at organic/ aqueous ratios of 1:2, uraniura separation factors of 0.45 and 0.82 were obtained.     2 1 9 0 5 - completed on the nature and amount of the radiolysis products of tributyl phosphate containing equilibration quantities of 2M aqueous HNO/sub 3/, a 1: 2 volume ratio two-phase TBP-2M aqueous HNO/sub 3/ system, a 5% TBP-95% Amsco-2M HNO/sub 3/ two-phase system, four different (15-30- 45-60%) TBP-Amsco phases containing equilibration quantities of 2M HNO/sub 3/, didecyl decanephosphonate, diethyl carbonate, diethyl carbonate containing equilibration quantities of 1M HNO/sub 3/, di-(2ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid, tri- n-octyl phosphine oxide, and tri-iso-octyl amine. The effect of nitric acid on tributyl phosphate radiolysis was tested in a variety of situations. G(MBP) valuesmore » obtained from the two TBPHNO/sub 3/ studies indicated that 2M HNO/sub 3/ resent either in an acid-saturated single phase, or as a second phase, increased the G(MBP) value by a factor of four. Amsco solutions of TBP in the presence of HrO/sub 3/ did not differ in G(MBP) yield from pure TBP irradiations. Acidsatarated TBP produced G(gas) values twice that of pure TBP. Amsco solutions of TBP, equilibrated with 2M HNO/sub 3/ prior to irradiation, produced G(gas) values roughly one-half of the value for pure TBP. Studies of new alternate solvents for TBP were extended to include a detailed study of diethyl carbonate for process application. Diethyl carbonate, when saturated by equilibration with 2M HNO/sub 3/, yielded G(gas) values 20% higher than pure diethyl carbonate. G(acid) levels were 1% of those found for irradiated TBP. Irradiations of didecyl decanephosphonate and tri-n-octyl phosphine oxide indicated that the two compounds had comparable G(gas) values, but the phosphine oxide produced G(acid) values three to four factors smaller. Irradiation of a commercial tri-iso-octyl amine to 1795 whr/liter dose level produced a gross target destruction by radiolysis of almost 60%. Irradiation of pure tributyl phosphate to the same dose results in about 35% destruction. Irradiation of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid produced a G(dibasic actd) value roughly one-third of that from DBP. However, the G(phosphoric acid) value for the compound exceeded that of DBP by a factor of six. The G/sub M/ (polymer) value was one-third that of DBP and one-half that of TBP. The G/sub M/(target) value was 50% higher than the value for TBP and 20% lower than that for DBP. Studies of factors causing poor process performance were made by evaluation of U retention and emulsification. Spinner column studies indicated that 65% of the U retention of irradiated TBP was due to DBP and only 20% due to radiation polymer. Irradiation of HNO/sub 3/-saturated TBP-Amsco systems increased the U retention, compared to that of unirradiated systems, by factors of three to four at 400 whr/liter levels. Emulsification studies indicated that radiation polymer is the main contributor to emulsification phenomena with irradiated TBP at dose levels from 25-100 whr/ liter. Degree of emulsification was increased by factors of three to four when HNO/sub 3/-saturated TBP-Amsco systems were irradiated to 400 whr/liter. Several properties of diethyl carbonate of process interest were studied. Separatory funnel studies indicated diethyl carbonate to be 50% as efficient as 25% TBP- Amsco systems for extraction of U from acidic 2M Al(NO/sub 3/)sub 3/ aqueous systems. The U retention of HNO/sub 3/-saturated diethyl carbonate, after irradiation to 380 whr/liter dose, was higher than that observed with pure irradiated diethyl carbonate at 980 whr/liter levels by a factor of two. This higher level of retention, however, is equal to that or unirradiated 25% tributyl phosphate-Amsco systems.   5. SURVEY OF RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN SOLVENT EXTRACTION WITH TRIBUTYL PHOSPHATE

    Tributyl phosphate can be used for extraction in processing all current power reactor fuels. Nitric acid is the only salting agent required. Typical flowsheets are presented. In aluminum nitrate systems which are more than 0.1 M acid deficient, the uranium distribution coefficient is a function of pH and independent of aluminum concentration; the coefficient remains constant at one in fluoride systems when the nitrate to fluoride ratio is approximates 3.5. Many objectionable properties of degraded diluents are ascribed to nitroparaffins. Aliphatic diluents with the least branching are the most stable to nitration. The nitration stability of aromatic diluents varies withmore » structure, e.g., stabilities of diethylbenzenes decrease as meta >> ortho > para. Solvent purification by flash distillation appears superior to other methods. The stability of Amsco 125-82 was permanently improved by treatment with sulfuric acid. The radiation stability of TBP was approximates 2 times higher in an aromatic diluent than in Amsco 125-82. The G decomposition value for 1 M TBP in Amsco alone was approximates 0.9; whereas in 1 to 3 M HNO/sub 3/ it was 1 to 5 and G (--HNO/sub 3/ org phase) was 3 to 20. Variation of uranium--thorium separation factors with structure of some neutral organophosphorus reagents is presented.   6. Semiclosed transfemoral iliac endarterectomy with an oscillating ring stripper.

    The technique of endarterectomy for the removal of occlusive atherosclerotic lesions of the aorta and iliac arteries has been utilized successfully in the revascularization of ischemic limbs since its introduction in 1951. The oscillating loop endarterectomy device (Amsco-Hall arterial oscillator) has proven to be useful for endarterectomy of segmental occlusive disease as a substitute for bypass with prosthetic graft. For our elderly debilitated patients, we have adopted a new technique of semiclosed transfemoral iliac endarterectomy for management of occlusive external iliac disease with a patent common iliac artery. We report seven patients treated during May 1987 through May 1988 for external iliac artery occlusion by transfemoral oscillating loop endarterectomy. At 12 months for follow-up review, the cumulative limb salvage rate was 80% with no perioperative mortality. One patient required above-knee amputation eight months following endarterectomy to control forefoot sepsis. Two patients required subsequent leg bypass procedures to achieve full healing of foot level amputation. One patient required dilatation of residual stenosis at the iliac bifurcation by percutaneous balloon angioplasty. Semiclosed transfemoral endarterectomy with the Amsco-Hall oscillating loop device remains an attractive option to the vascular surgeon for recanalization of the iliac artery without the need for an extensive retroperitoneal dissection.

    Information is presented on a suitable amine processing system for plutonium nitrate. Experiments with concentrated plutonium nitrate solutions show that trilaurylamine (TLA) - xylene solvent systems did not form a second organic phase. Experiments are also reported with tri-noctylamine (TnOA)-xylene and TLA-Amsco - octyl alcohol. Two organic phases appear in both these systems at high plutonium nitrate concentrations.     Staphylococcus aureus phage ISP was lyophilized, using an Amsco-Finn Aqua GT4 freeze dryer, in the presence of six different stabilizers at different concentrations. Stability of the lyophilized phage at 4 °C was monitored up to 37 months and compared to stability in Luria Bertani broth and physiological saline at 4 °C. Sucrose and trehalose were shown to be the best stabilizing additives, causing a decrease of only 1 log immediately after the lyophilization procedure and showing high stability during a 27 month storage period.

The survey of 143 hospital CEOs and CFOs conducted by Kowalski-Dickow Associates, a materials management consulting firm based in Milwaukee, sheds light on executives' perceptions of the performance, characteristics and future of materials management. Materials managers can use the information to begin--or enhance--communications with senior management. The study was completed in cooperation with the American Society for Healthcare Materials Management and Materials Management in Health Care.   11. Evaluation of Ophthalmic Surgical Instrument Sterility Using Short-Cycle Sterilization for Sequential Same-Day Use.

    The common practice of short-cycle sterilization for ophthalmic surgical instrumentation has come under increased regulatory scrutiny. This study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of short-cycle sterilization processing for consecutive same-day cataract procedures. Testing of specific sterilization processing methods by an independent medical device validation testing laboratory. Phaco handpieces from 3 separate manufacturers were tested along with appropriate biologic indicators and controls using 2 common steam sterilizers. A STATIM 2000 sterilizer (SciCan, Canonsburg, PA) with the STATIM metal cassette, and an AMSCO Century V116 pre-vacuum sterilizer (STERIS, Mentor, OH) using a Case Medical SteriTite container (Case Medical, South Hackensack, NJ) rigid container were tested using phaco tips and handpieces from 3 different manufacturers. Biological indicators were inoculated with highly resistant Geobacillus stearothermophilus, and each sterility verification test was performed in triplicate. Both wrapped and contained loads were tested with full dry cycles and a 7-day storage time to simulate prolonged storage. In adherence with the manufacturers' instructions for use (IFU), short cycles (3.0-3.5-minute exposure times) for unwrapped and contained loads were also tested after only 1 minute of dry time to simulate use on a consecutive case. Additional studies were performed to demonstrate whether any moisture present in the load containing phaco handpieces postprocessing was sterile and would affect the sterility of the contents after a 3-minute transit/storage time. This approximated the upper limit of time needed to transfer a containment device to the operating room. Presence or absence of microbial growth from cultured test samples. All inoculated test samples from both sterilizers were negative for growth of the target organism whether the full dry phase was interrupted or not. Pipetted postprocessing moisture samples and swabs of the handpieces were also negative for growth after a 3-minute transit/storage time. These studies support the use of unwrapped, short-cycle sterilization that adheres to the IFU of these 2 popular Food and Drug Administration-cleared sterilizers for sequential same-day cataract surgeries. A full drying phase is not necessary when the instruments are kept within the covered sterilizer containment device for prompt use on a sequential case.
