The contribution of anyonic degrees of freedom emerging in the non-Abelian spin sector of a one-dimensional system of interacting fermions carrying both spin and SU(N f ) orbital degrees of freedom to the thermodynamic properties of the latter is studied based on the exact solution of the model. For sufficiently small temperatures and magnetic fields the anyons appear as zero energy modes localized at the massive kink excitations (Tsvelik 2014 Phys. Rev. Lett. 113 066401). From their quantum dimension they are identified as spin- anyons. The density of kinks (and anyons) can be controlled by an external magnetic field leading to the formation of a collective state of these anyons described by a parafermion conformal field theory for large fields. Based on the numerical analysis of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations we propose a phase diagram for the anyonic modes.

We show that braidings of the metaplectic anyons X{sub ϵ} in SO(3){sub 2} = SU(2){sub 4} with their total charge equal to the metaplectic mode Y supplemented with projective measurements of the total charge of two metaplectic anyons are universal for quantum computation. We conjecture that similar universal anyonic computing models can be constructed for all metaplectic anyon systems SO(p){sub 2} for any odd prime p ≥ 5. In order to prove universality, we find new conceptually appealing universal gate sets for qutrits and qupits.

We propose a correspondence between an Anyon Van der Waals fluid and a (2 + 1) dimensional AdS black hole. Anyons are particles with intermediate statistics that interpolates between a Fermi-Dirac statistics and a Bose-Einstein one. A parameter α (0 < α < 1) characterizes this intermediate statistics of Anyons. The equation of state for the Anyon Van der Waals fluid shows that it has a quasi Fermi-Dirac statistics for α >αc, but a quasi Bose-Einstein statistics for α <αc. By defining a general form of the metric for the (2 + 1) dimensional AdS black hole and considering the temperature of the black hole to be equal with that of the Anyon Van der Waals fluid, we construct the exact form of the metric for a (2 + 1) dimensional AdS black hole. The thermodynamic properties of this black hole is consistent with those of the Anyon Van der Waals fluid. For α <αc, the solution exhibits a quasi Bose-Einstein statistics. For α >αc and a range of values of the cosmological constant, there is, however, no event horizon so there is no black hole solution. Thus, for these values of cosmological constants, the AdS Anyon Van der Waals black holes have only quasi Bose-Einstein statistics.

Using the Anyon-Hubbard Hamiltonian, we analyze the ground-state properties of anyons in a one-dimensional lattice. To this end we map the hopping dynamics of correlated anyons to an occupation-dependent hopping Bose-Hubbard model using the fractional Jordan-Wigner transformation. In particular, we calculate the quasi-momentum distribution of anyons, which interpolates between Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics. Analytically, we apply a modified Gutzwiller mean-field approach, which goes beyond a classical one by including the influence of the fractional phase of anyons within the many-body wavefunction. Numerically, we use the density-matrix renormalization group by relying on the ansatz of matrix product states. As a result it turns out that the anyonic quasi-momentum distribution reveals both a peak-shift and an asymmetry which mainly originates from the nonlocal string property. In addition, we determine the corresponding quasi-momentum distribution of the Jordan-Wigner transformed bosons, where, in contrast to the hard-core case, we also observe an asymmetry for the soft-core case, which strongly depends on the particle number density.

In a seminal paper [Phys. Rev. D 27, 2885 (1983), 10.1103/PhysRevD.27.2885], Page and Wootters suggest that time evolution could be described solely in terms of correlations between systems and clocks, as a means of dealing with the "problem of time" stemming from vanishing Hamiltonian dynamics in many theories of quantum gravity. Their approach seeks to identify relational dynamics given a Hamiltonian constraint on the physical states. Here we present a "state-centric" reformulation of the Page and Wootters model better suited to cases where the Hamiltonian constraint is satisfied, such as anyons emerging in Chern-Simons theories. We describe relational time by encoding logical "clock" qubits into topologically protected anyonic degrees of freedom. The minimum temporal increment of such anyonic clocks is determined by the universality of the anyonic braid group, with nonuniversal models naturally exhibiting discrete time. We exemplify this approach by using SU (2) 2 anyons and discuss generalizations to other states and models.
Non-locality of non-Abelian anyons

Entangled states of quantum systems can give rise to measurement correlations of separated observers that cannot be described by local hidden variable theories. Usually, it is assumed that entanglement between particles is generated due to some distance-dependent interaction. Yet anyonic particles in two dimensions have a nontrivial interaction that is purely topological in nature. In other words, it does not depend on the distance between two particles, but rather on their exchange history. The information encoded in anyons is inherently non-local even in the single subsystem level making the treatment of anyons non-conventional. We describe a protocol to reveal the non-locality of anyons in terms of correlations in the outcomes of measurements in two separated regions. This gives a clear operational measure of non-locality for anyonic states and it opens up the possibility to test Bell inequalities in quantum Hall liquids or spin lattices.

We propose feasible scenarios for revealing the modified exchange statistics in one-dimensional anyon models in optical lattices based on an extension of the multicolor lattice-depth modulation scheme introduced in [Phys. Rev. A 94, 023615 (2016), 10.1103/PhysRevA.94.023615]. We show that the fast modulation of a two-component fermionic lattice gas in the presence a magnetic field gradient, in combination with additional resonant microwave fields, allows for the quantum simulation of hardcore anyon models with periodic boundary conditions. Such a semisynthetic ring setup allows for realizing an interferometric arrangement sensitive to the anyonic statistics. Moreover, we show as well that simple expansion experiments may reveal the formation of anomalously bound pairs resulting from the anyonic exchange.

We enquire into the quasi many-body localization in topologically ordered states of matter, revolving around the case of Kitaev toric code on the ladder geometry, where different types of anyonic defects carry different masses induced by environmental errors. Our study verifies that the presence of anyons generates a complex energy landscape solely through braiding statistics, which suffices to suppress the diffusion of defects in such clean, multicomponent anyonic liquid. This nonergodic dynamics suggests a promising scenario for investigation of quasi many-body localization. Computing standard diagnostics evidences that a typical initial inhomogeneity of anyons gives birth to a glassy dynamics with an exponentially diverging time scale of the full relaxation. Our results unveil how self-generated disorder ameliorates the vulnerability of topological order away from equilibrium. This setting provides a new platform which paves the way toward impeding logical errors by self-localization of anyons in a generic, high energy state, originated exclusively in their exotic statistics.

We introduce a rigorous approach to the many-body spectral theory of extended anyons, that is quantum particles confined to two dimensions that interact via attached magnetic fluxes of finite extent. Our main results are many-body magnetic Hardy inequalities and local exclusion principles for these particles, leading to estimates for the ground-state energy of the anyon gas over the full range of the parameters. This brings out further non-trivial aspects in the dependence on the anyonic statistics parameter, and also gives improvements in the ideal (non-extended) case.

Classically simulating the dynamics of anyonic excitations in two-dimensional quantum systems is likely intractable in general because such dynamics are sufficient to implement universal quantum computation. However, processes of interest for the study of quantum error correction in anyon systems are typically drawn from a restricted class that displays significant structure over a wide range of system parameters. We exploit this structure to classically simulate, and thereby demonstrate the success of, an error-correction protocol for a quantum memory based on the universal Fibonacci anyon model. We numerically simulate a phenomenological model of the system and noise processes on lattice sizes of up to 128 ×128 sites, and find a lower bound on the error-correction threshold of approximately 0.125 errors per edge, which is comparable to those previously known for Abelian and (nonuniversal) non-Abelian anyon models.

The Lagrangian model for anyons, presented earlier, is extended to include interactions with an external, homogeneous electromagnetic field. Explicit electric and magnetic moment terms for the anyon are introduced in the Lagrangian. The (2+1)-dimensional Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation as well as the correct value (2) of the gyromagnetic ratio is rederived, in the Hamiltonian framework.

Anyons are a third class of particles with nontrivial exchange statistics, particles carrying fractional statistics that interpolate between bosons and fermions. In the last years, it has been made some proposals to emulate an anyon gas by confining bosonic atoms in optical lattices [ Nat. Commun. 2, 361 (2011)]. In this work, we studied the ground state of anyons interacting through local three-body terms in one-dimension, motivated by recent experimental and theoretical studies about multi-body interactions in cold atoms setups. We used the density-matrix renormalization group method to find the phase diagram and the von Neumann block entropy to determinate the critical point position. The main quantum phases found are the superfluid and the Mott insulator ones. For the statistical angle θ = π /4, the phase diagram shows that the Mott lobes are surrounded by superfluid regions, the Mott lobes increase with the density and the first Mott lobe has two anyons per site. We found that a Mott lobe with one anyon per site, it is possible for larger statistical angles, a fact that it is impossible with bosons. We propose a scheme to test the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger paradox based on braidings of non-Abelian anyons, which are exotic quasiparticle excitations of topological states of matter. Because topological ordered states are robust against local perturbations, this scheme is in some sense "fault-tolerant" and might close the detection inefficiency loophole problem in previous experimental tests of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger paradox. In turn, the construction of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger paradox reveals the nonlocal property of non-Abelian anyons. Our results indicate that the non-Abelian fractional statistics is a pure quantum effect and cannot be described by local realistic theories. Finally, we present a possible experimental implementation of the scheme based on the anyonic interferometry technologies.

We show that neutral anyonic excitations have a signature in spectroscopic measurements of materials: The low-energy onset of spectral functions near the threshold follows universal power laws with an exponent that depends only on the statistics of the anyons. This provides a route, using experimental techniques such as neutron scattering and tunneling spectroscopy, for detecting anyonic statistics in topologically ordered states such as gapped quantum spin liquids and hypothesized fractional Chern insulators. Our calculations also explain some recent theoretical results in spin systems.

We use projected entangled pair states (PEPS) to study topological quantum phase transitions. The local description of topological order in the PEPS formalism allows us to set up order parameters which measure condensation and deconfinement of anyons and serve as substitutes for conventional order parameters. We apply these order parameters, together with anyon-anyon correlation functions and some further probes, to characterize topological phases and phase transitions within a family of models based on a Z4 symmetry, which contains Z4 quantum double, toric code, double semion, and trivial phases. We find a diverse phase diagram which exhibits a variety of different phase transitions of both first and second order which we comprehensively characterize, including direct transitions between the toric code and the double semion phase.

Non-Abelian anyons promise to reveal spectacular features of quantum mechanics that could ultimately provide the foundation for a decoherence-free quantum computer. A key breakthrough in the pursuit of these exotic particles originated from Read and Green's observation that the Moore-Read quantum Hall state and a (relatively simple) two-dimensional p+ip superconductor both support so-called Ising non-Abelian anyons. Here, we establish a similar correspondence between the Z3 Read-Rezayi quantum Hall state and a novel two-dimensional superconductor in which charge-2e Cooper pairs are built from fractionalized quasiparticles. In particular, both phases harbor Fibonacci anyons that—unlike Ising anyons—allow for universal topological quantum computation solely through braiding. Using a variant of Teo and Kane's construction of non-Abelian phases from weakly coupled chains, we provide a blueprint for such a superconductor using Abelian quantum Hall states interlaced with an array of superconducting islands. Fibonacci anyons appear as neutral deconfined particles that lead to a twofold ground-state degeneracy on a torus. In contrast to a p+ip superconductor, vortices do not yield additional particle types, yet depending on nonuniversal energetics can serve as a trap for Fibonacci anyons. These results imply that one can, in principle, combine well-understood and widely available phases of matter to realize non-Abelian anyons with universal braid statistics. Numerous future directions are discussed, including speculations on alternative realizations with fewer experimental requirements.

Anyons are exotic quasiparticles with fractional charge that can emerge as fundamental excitations of strongly interacting topological quantum phases of matter. Unlike ordinary fermions and bosons, they may obey non-Abelian statistics—a property that would help realize fault-tolerant quantum computation. Non-Abelian anyons have long been predicted to occur in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) phases that form in two-dimensional electron gases in the presence of a large magnetic field, such as the ν =5 /2 FQH state. However, direct experimental evidence of anyons and tests that can distinguish between Abelian and non-Abelian quantum ground states with such excitations have remained elusive. Here, we propose a new experimental approach to directly visualize the structure of interacting electronic states of FQH states with the STM. Our theoretical calculations show how spectroscopy mapping with the STM near individual impurity defects can be used to image fractional statistics in FQH states, identifying unique signatures in such measurements that can distinguish different proposed ground states. The presence of locally trapped anyons should leave distinct signatures in STM spectroscopic maps, and enables a new approach to directly detect—and perhaps ultimately manipulate—these exotic quasiparticles.

We study two families of quantum models which have been used previously to investigate the effect of topological symmetries in one-dimensional correlated matter. Various striking similarities are observed between certain {Z}n quantum clock models, spin chains generalizing the Ising model, and chains of non-Abelian anyons constructed from the so(n)2 fusion category for odd n, both subject to periodic boundary conditions. In spite of the differences between these two types of quantum chains, e.g. their Hilbert spaces being spanned by tensor products of local spin states or fusion paths of anyons, the symmetries of the lattice models are shown to be closely related. Furthermore, under a suitable mapping between the parameters describing the interaction between spins and anyons the respective Hamiltonians share part of their energy spectrum (although their degeneracies may differ). This spin-anyon correspondence can be extended by fine-tuning of the coupling constants leading to exactly solvable models. We show that the algebraic structures underlying the integrability of the clock models and the anyon chain are the same. For n = 3,5,7 we perform an extensive finite size study—both numerical and based on the exact solution—of these models to map out their ground state phase diagram and to identify the effective field theories describing their low energy behaviour. We observe that the continuum limit at the integrable points can be described by rational conformal field theories with extended symmetry algebras which can be related to the discrete ones of the lattice models.
Topological entanglement entropy with a twist.

Defects in topologically ordered models have interesting properties that are reminiscent of the anyonic excitations of the models themselves. For example, dislocations in the toric code model are known as twists and possess properties that are analogous to Ising anyons. We strengthen this analogy by using the topological entanglement entropy as a diagnostic tool to identify properties of both defects and excitations in the toric code. Specifically, we show, through explicit calculation, that the toric code model including twists and dyon excitations has the same quantum dimensions, the same total quantum dimension, and the same fusion rules as an Ising anyon model.

This thesis is dedicated to the study of various topological aspects of field theory, and is divided in three parts. In two space dimensions the possibility of fractional statistics can be implemented by adding an appropriate "fictitious" electric charge and magnetic flux to each particle (after which they are known as anyons). Since the statistical interaction is rather difficult to handle, a mean-field approximation is used in order to describe a gas of anyons. We derive a criterion for the validity of this approximation using the inherent feature of parity violation in the scattering of anyons. We use this new method in various examples of anyons and show both analytically and numerically that the approximation is justified if the statistical interaction is weak, and that it must be more weak for boson-based than for fermion-based anyons. Chern-Simons theories give an elegant implementation of anyonic properties in field theories, which permits the emergence of new mechanisms for anyon superconductivity. Since it is reasonable to think that superconductivity is a low energy phenomenon, we have been interested in non-relativistic C-S systems. We present the scalar field effective potential for non-relativistic matter coupled to both Abelian and non-Abelian C-S gauge fields. We perform the calculations using functional methods in background fields. Finally, we compute the scalar effective potential in various gauges and treat divergences with various regularization schemes. In three space dimensions, a generalization of Chern-Simons theory may be achieved by introducing an antisymmetric tensor gauge field. We use these theories, called B wedge F theories, to present an alternative to the Higgs mechanism to generate masses for non-Abelian gauge fields. The initial Lagrangian is composed of a fermion with current-current and dipole-dipole type self -interactions minimally coupled to non-Abelian gauge fields. The mass generation occurs upon the fermionic functional integration. We show that by suitably adjusting the coupling constants the effective theory contains massive non-Abelian gauge fields without any residual scalars or other degrees of freedom.

We propose a standard time-of-flight experiment as a method for observing the anyonic statistics of quasiholes in a fractional quantum Hall state of ultracold atoms. The quasihole states can be stably prepared by pinning the quasiholes with localized potentials and a measurement of the mean square radius of the freely expanding cloud, which is related to the average total angular momentum of the initial state, offers direct signatures of the statistical phase. Our proposed method is validated by Monte Carlo calculations for ν =1 /2 and 1 /3 fractional quantum Hall liquids containing a realistic number of particles. Extensions to quantum Hall liquids of light and to non-Abelian anyons are briefly discussed.

Self-correcting quantum memory with a boundary

We study the two-dimensional toric-code Hamiltonian with effective long-range interactions between its anyonic excitations induced by coupling the toric code to external fields. It has been shown that such interactions allow an arbitrary increase in the lifetime of the stored quantum information by making L, the linear size of the memory, larger [Chesi , Phys. Rev. APLRAAN1050-294710.1103/PhysRevA.82.022305 82, 022305 (2010)]. We show that for these systems the choice of boundary conditions (open boundaries as opposed to periodic boundary conditions) is not a mere technicality; the influence of anyons produced at the boundaries becomes in fact dominant for large enough L. This influence can be either beneficial or detrimental. In particular, we study an effective Hamiltonian proposed by Pedrocchi [Phys. Rev. BPRBMDO1098-012110.1103/PhysRevB.83.115415 83, 115415 (2011)] that describes repulsion between anyons and anyon holes. For this system, we find a lifetime of the stored quantum information that grows exponentially in L2 for both periodic and open boundary conditions, although the exponent in the latter case is found to be less favorable. However, L is upper bounded through the breakdown of the perturbative treatment of the underlying Hamiltonian.

The possibility that anyons -- quantum particles other than fermions or bosons -- can emerge in condensed matter systems has motivated generations of physicists. In addition to being of fundamental scientific importance, so-called non-Abelian anyons are particularly sought-after for potential applications to quantum computing. However, experimental evidence of anyons in electronic systems remains inconclusive. We propose to demonstrate non-Abelian braiding by injecting coherent states of light into ``topological guided modes'' in specially-fabricated photonic waveguide arrays. These modes are photonic analogues of topological zero modes in electronic systems. Light traveling inside spatially well-separated topological guided modes can be braided, leading to the accumulation of non-Abelian phases. We propose an optical interference experiment to probe this non-Abelian braiding directly. T.I. is supported by a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship under Grant No. DGE-1247312.

... In this article I shall argue tentatively for the claim that commercial surrogacy should be legally permissible. I am more strongly convinced that a commitment to feminism should not predispose anyone against surrogacy. At least, no arguments offered so far should persuade anyone who is committed to equal rights for women and men and the dismantling of gender-based hierarchies to favor either legal prohibition or moral condemnation of commercial surrogacy.

We investigate the flow of a strongly coupled anyonic superfluid based on the holographic D3-D7' probe brane model. By analyzing the spectrum of fluctuations, we find the critical superfluid velocity, as a function of the temperature, at which the flow stops being dissipationless when flowing past a barrier. We find that at a larger velocity the flow becomes unstable even in the absence of a barrier.

Starting with a holographic construction for a fractional quantum Hall state based on the D3-D7' system, we explore alternative quantization conditions for the bulk gauge fields. This gives a description of a quantum Hall state with various filling fractions. For a particular alternative quantization of the bulk gauge fields, we obtain a holographic anyon fluid in a vanishing background magnetic field. We show that this system is a superfluid, exhibiting the relevant gapless excitation.
Gauge invariance of fractionally charged quasiparticles and hidden topological Zn symmetry

1991-02-01
Using the braid-group formalism we study the consequences of gauge invariance for fractionally charged anyonic quasiparticles in a two-dimensional multiply connected system. It is shown that gauge invariance requires multicomponent wave functions, and leads to the emergence of a hidden topological Zn symmetry with associated quantum number and unavoidable occurrence of level crossings for many-body eigenstates. In certain situations, it relates the fractional charge to anyon statistics. The implications for the fractional quantum Hall effect are also discussed.
Disclosure and police reporting of intimate partner violence postpartum: a pilot study.

2010-02-01
intimate partner violence is a significant health problem. Fear of retaliation and shame may prevent women from telling anyone about the violence. This study investigated the prevalence of disclosure and police reporting of intimate partner violence during the first year postpartum. a prospective longitudinal Swedish cohort study based on information from 2563 women who answered a postal questionnaire in early pregnancy and 12 months postpartum. of 52 women who had been exposed to violence by their partner during the first year postpartum, four (8%) had filed a police report while 19 (37%) had not told anyone about the violence. All single women in the study had disclosed the violence to a friend, a relative or filed a police report. few women file a police report when they are being hit by their partner during the year after childbirth. Many women do not tell anyone that they have been hit. these data may encourage health professionals to undertake sensitive questioning about violence, giving an opening for support. Dynamically enriched topological orders in driven two-dimensional systems
NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)
Potter, Andrew C.; Morimoto, Takahiro
2017-04-01
Time-periodic driving of a quantum system can enable new dynamical topological phases of matter that could not exist in thermal equilibrium. We investigate two related classes of dynamical topological phenomena in 2D systems: Floquet symmetry-protected topological phases (FSPTs) and Floquet enriched topological orders (FETs). By constructing solvable lattice models for a complete set of 2D bosonic FSPT phases, we show that bosonic FSPTs can be understood as topological pumps which deposit loops of 1D SPT chains onto the boundary during each driving cycle, which protects a nontrivial edge state by dynamically tuning the edge to a self-dual point poised between the 1D SPT and trivial phases of the edge. By coupling these FSPT models to dynamical gauge fields, we construct solvable models of FET orders in which anyon excitations are dynamically transmuted into topologically distinct anyon types during each driving period. These bosonic FSPT and gauged FSPT models are classified by group cohomology methods. In addition, we also construct examples of "beyond cohomology" FET orders, which can be viewed as topological pumps of 1D topological chains formed of emergent anyonic quasiparticles.

The purpose of this project was to develop an international web-based expert system using principals of artificial intelligence and user-centered design for management of mental health by Korean emigrants. Using this system, anyone can access the system via computer access to the web. Our design process utilized principles of user-centered design with 4 phases: needs assessment, analysis, design/development/testing, and application release. A survey was done with 3,235 Korean emigrants. Focus group interviews were also conducted. Survey and analysis results guided the design of the web-based expert system. With this system, anyone can check their mental health status by themselves using a personal computer. The system analyzes facts based on answers to automated questions, and suggests solutions accordingly. A history tracking mechanism enables monitoring and future analysis. In addition, this system will include intervention programs to promote mental health status. This system is interactive and accessible to anyone in the world. It is expected that this management system will contribute to Korean emigrants' mental health promotion and allow researchers and professionals to share information on mental health.
Dynamics of hot random quantum spin chains: from anyons to Heisenberg spins
NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)
Parameswaran, Siddharth; Potter, Andrew; Vasseur, Romain
2015-03-01
We argue that the dynamics of the random-bond Heisenberg spin chain are ergodic at infinite temperature, in contrast to the many-body localized behavior seen in its random-field counterpart. First, we show that excited-state real-space renormalization group (RSRG-X) techniques suffer from a fatal breakdown of perturbation theory due to the proliferation of large effective spins that grow without bound. We repair this problem by deforming the SU (2) symmetry of the Heisenberg chain to its `anyonic' version, SU(2)k , where the growth of effective spins is truncated at spin S = k / 2 . This enables us to construct a self-consistent RSRG-X scheme that is particularly simple at infinite temperature. Solving the flow equations, we compute the excited-state entanglement and show that it crosses over from volume-law to logarithmic scaling at a length scale ξk ~eαk3 . This reveals that (a) anyon chains have random-singlet-like excited states for any finite k; and (b) ergodicity is restored in the Heisenberg limit k --> ∞ . We acknowledge support from the Quantum Materials program of LBNL (RV), the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation (ACP), and UC Irvine startup funds (SAP).

Enabling Anyone to Translate Clinically Relevant Ideas to Therapies.

2017-01-01
How do we inspire new ideas that could lead to potential treatments for rare or neglected diseases, and allow for serendipity that could help to catalyze them? How many potentially good ideas are lost because they are never tested? What if those ideas could have lead to new therapeutic approaches and major healthcare advances? If a clinician or anyone for that matter, has a new idea they want to test to develop a molecule or therapeutic that they could translate to the clinic, how would they do it without a laboratory or funding? These are not idle theoretical questions but addressing them could have potentially huge economic implications for nations. If we fail to capture the diversity of ideas and test them we may also lose out on the next blockbuster treatments. Many of those involved in the process of ideation may be discouraged and simply not know where to go. We try to address these questions and describe how there are options to raising funding, how even small scale investments can foster preclinical or clinical translation, and how there are several approaches to outsourcing the experiments, whether to collaborators or commercial enterprises. While these are not new or far from complete solutions, they are first steps that can be taken by virtually anyone while we work on other solutions to build a more concrete structure for the "idea-hypothesis testing-proof of concept-translation-breakthrough pathway".

Space Group Symmetry Fractionalization in a Chiral Kagome Heisenberg Antiferromagnet.

The anyonic excitations of a spin liquid can feature fractional quantum numbers under space group symmetries. Detecting these fractional quantum numbers, which are analogs of the fractional charge of Laughlin quasiparticles, may prove easier than the direct observation of anyonic braiding and statistics. Motivated by the recent numerical discovery of spin-liquid phases in the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet, we theoretically predict the pattern of space group symmetry fractionalization in the kagome lattice SO(3)-symmetric chiral spin liquid. We provide a method to detect these fractional quantum numbers in finite-size numerics which is simple to implement in the density matrix renormalization group. Applying these developments to the chiral spin liquid phase of a kagome Heisenberg model, we find perfect agreement between our theoretical prediction and numerical observations.

Fractional superstatistics from a kinetic approach
NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)
Ourabah, Kamel; Tribeche, Mouloud
2018-03-01
Through a kinetic approach, in which temperature fluctuations are taken into account, we obtain generalized fractional statistics interpolating between Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics. The latter correspond to the superstatistical analogues of the Polychronakos and Haldane-Wu statistics. The virial coefficients corresponding to these statistics are worked out and compared to those of an ideal two-dimensional anyon gas. It is shown that the obtained statistics reproduce correctly the second and third virial coefficients of an anyon gas. On this basis, a link is established between the statistical parameter and the strength of fluctuations. A further generalization is suggested by allowing the statistical parameter to fluctuate. As a by-product, superstatistics of ewkons, introduced recently to deal with dark energy [Phys. Rev. E 94, 062115 (2016), 10.1103/PhysRevE.94.062115], are also obtained within the same method.

A two-dimensional electron liquid (TDEL), subjected to a smooth random potential, is studied in the regime of the fractional quantum Hall effect. An analytical theory of the nonlinear screening is presented for the case when the fractional gap is much less than the magnitude of the unscreened random potential. In this ``narrow-gap approximation'' (NGA), we calculate the electron density distribution function, the fraction of the TDEL which is in the incompressible state, and the thermodynamic density of states. The magnetocapacitance is calculated to compare with the recent experiments. The NGA is found to be not accurate enough to describe the data. The results for larger fractional gaps are obtained by computer modeling. To fit the recent experimental data we have also taken into account the anyon-anyon interaction in the vicinity of a fractional singularity.

Many phases of matter, including superconductors, fractional quantum Hall fluids, and spin liquids, are described by gauge theories with constrained Hilbert spaces. However, thermalization and the applicability of quantum statistical mechanics has primarily been studied in unconstrained Hilbert spaces. In this paper, we investigate whether constrained Hilbert spaces permit local thermalization. Specifically, we explore whether the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) holds in a pinned Fibonacci anyon chain, which serves as a representative case study. We first establish that the constrained Hilbert space admits a notion of locality by showing that the influence of a measurement decays exponentially in space. This suggests that the constraints are no impediment to thermalization. We then provide numerical evidence that ETH holds for the diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements of various local observables in a generic disorder-free nonintegrable model. We also find that certain nonlocal observables obey ETH.

We demonstrate the role of interactions in driving the relaxation of an isolated integrable quantum system following a sudden quench. We consider a family of integrable hard-core lattice anyon models that continuously interpolates between noninteracting spinless fermions and strongly interacting hard-core bosons. A generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation maps the entire family to noninteracting fermions. We find that, aside from the singular free-fermion limit, the entire single-particle density matrix and, therefore, all one-body observables relax to the predictions of the generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE). This demonstrates that, in the presence of interactions, correlations between particles in the many-body wave function provide the effective dissipation required to drive the relaxation of all one-body observables to the GGE. This relaxation does not depend on translational invariance or the tracing out of any spatial domain of the system.

Mandatory HIV testing in China: the perception of health-care providers.
Li, Li; Wu, Zunyou; Wu, Sheng; Lee, Sung-Jae; Rotheram-Borus, Mary Jane; Detels, Roger; Jia, Manhong; Sun, Stephanie
2007-07-01
Health-care providers in China are facing an exponential increase in HIV testing and HIV-positive patients. A total of 1101 service providers were recruited to examine attitudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in China. Logistic regression models were used to assess factors associated with providers' attitudes toward mandatory HIV testing. Providers were most likely to endorse mandatory HIV testing for patients with high-risk behaviour and for all patients before surgery. Over 43% of providers endorsed mandatory testing for anyone admitted to hospital. Controlling for demographics, multivariate analyses indicated that providers with higher perceived risk of HIV infection at work, higher general prejudicial attitudes toward PLWHA, and previous contact with HIV patients were more likely to endorse mandatory HIV testing for anyone admitted to hospital. Results underscore the importance of implementing universal precautions in health-care settings and call attention to social and ethical issues associated with HIV/AIDS control and treatment in China.
Elective Mutism: A Case Study of a Disorder of Childhood
Louden, Delroy M.
1987-01-01
This paper reviews a number of treatment strategies utilized in the treatment of a 6-year-old boy with a history of multiple parental separations. When the patient presented to the child psychiatric clinic, he had a history of not speaking in the preceding four months, following the arrival of a stepmother in the household and a move to a new house in a new locality. Developmental and psychometric assessments are presented and their utility in early diagnosis and later prognosis are discussed. Reluctant speech is differentiated from, and compared with, elective mutism. The management of elective mutism is often complicated by these children not speaking to anyone in certain environments, and very frequently the persons with whom they do speak are not available for participation in treatment programs. Consequently, if a child does not speak to anyone who can participate in the early mapping of treatment modalities, the use of treatment strategies such as stimulus fading is impossible. Suggestions for future management to overcome this difficulty are presented and discussed. PMID:3316671

Courtship choices and matrimonial partners remained highly limited and well defined in the late antebellum South but two categories encompassed the bulk of objectionable variables: community ("spatial") and class ("social"). As a general rule, white antebellum southerners seldom married anyone residing outside their own space and rarely married anyone identified outside their own social place. This article examines these socio-spatial boundaries in the rural plantation regions of western Tennessee. Based on a detailed database of 122 new marriages in Madison County (1851-1855), the conclusions of this article reinforce the strength of these geocultural borders. Nine of ten white southerners married within their own class. However, a few notable exceptions complicate efforts to craft a monolithic interpretation, and exceptions are always illuminating. This article encourages reexamination of the subtle interplay between space and place in the slave South -- as evidenced in the universal pursuit of matrimony.
Ubiquitous Stereo Vision for Controlling Safety on Platforms in Railroad Station
NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)
Yoda, Ikushi; Hosotani, Daisuke; Sakaue, Katushiko
Dozens of people are killed every year when they fall off of train platforms, making this an urgent issue to be addressed by the railroads, especially in the major cities. This concern prompted the present work that is now in progress to develop a Ubiquitous Stereo Vision based system for safety management at the edge of rail station platforms. In this approach, a series of stereo cameras are installed in a row on the ceiling that are pointed downward at the edge of the platform to monitor the disposition of people waiting for the train. The purpose of the system is to determine automatically and in real-time whether anyone or anything is in the danger zone at the very edge of the platform, whether anyone has actually fallen off the platform, or whether there is any sign of these things happening. The system could be configured to automatically switch over to a surveillance monitor or automatically connect to an emergency brake system in the event of trouble.

Many people are involved in accidents every year at railroad crossings, but there is no suitable sensor for detecting pedestrians. We are therefore developing a ubiquitous stereo vision based system for ensuring safety at railroad crossings. In this system, stereo cameras are installed at the corners and are pointed toward the center of the railroad crossing to monitor the passage of people. The system determines automatically and in real-time whether anyone or anything is inside the railroad crossing, and whether anyone remains in the crossing. The system can be configured to automatically switch over to a surveillance monitor or automatically connect to an emergency brake system in the event of trouble. We have developed an original stereovision device and installed the remote controlled experimental system applied human detection algorithm in the commercial railroad crossing. Then we store and analyze image data and tracking data throughout two years for standardization of system requirement specification.

Anyonic braiding in optical lattices
Zhang, Chuanwei; Scarola, V. W.; Tewari, Sumanta; Das Sarma, S.
2007-01-01
Topological quantum states of matter, both Abelian and non-Abelian, are characterized by excitations whose wavefunctions undergo nontrivial statistical transformations as one excitation is moved (braided) around another. Topological quantum computation proposes to use the topological protection and the braiding statistics of a non-Abelian topological state to perform quantum computation. The enormous technological prospect of topological quantum computation provides new motivation for experimentally observing a topological state. Here, we explicitly work out a realistic experimental scheme to create and braid the Abelian topological excitations in the Kitaev model built on a tunable robust system, a cold atom optical lattice. We also demonstrate how to detect the key feature of these excitations: their braiding statistics. Observation of this statistics would directly establish the existence of anyons, quantum particles that are neither fermions nor bosons. In addition to establishing topological matter, the experimental scheme we develop here can also be adapted to a non-Abelian topological state, supported by the same Kitaev model but in a different parameter regime, to eventually build topologically protected quantum gates. Female heart patients are underdiagnosed and undertreated. The purpose of this qualitative meta-data-analysis was to explain how societal expectations related to gender and the treatment environment influence women's experiences and can inform optimal care. The authors used grounded theory methodology and a social constructionist gender lens to analyze 43 studies (1993-2012) of women's experiences of heart disease. The analysis illustrates how social expectations within both medical and relational contexts led to women experiencing barriers to diagnosis and treatment and inadvertent minimization of their experience and knowledge. Women's descriptions of their experiences suggest three kinds of health care strategies that have the potential to increase women's engagement with heart disease treatment and rehabilitation: (a) support give and take in relational connections, (b) identify and acknowledge unique health-promoting behavior, and (c) focus on empowerment. These findings have interdisciplinary implications for practice with women with heart disease. © The Author(s) 2015.
