Real-Time Peer Review: An Innovative Feature to an Evidence-Based Practice Conference
Eldredge, Jonathan D.; Phillips, Holly E.; Kroth, Philip J.
2013-01-01
Many health sciences librarians as well as other professionals attend conferences on a regular basis. This study sought to link an innovative peer review process of presented research papers to long-term conference outcomes in the peer-reviewed professional journal literature. An evidence-based conference included a proof-of-concept study to gauge the long-term outcomes from research papers presented during the program. Real-time peer review recommendations from the conference were linked to final versions of articles published in the peer-reviewed literature. The real-time peer review feedback served as the basis for further mentoring to guide prospective authors toward publishing their research results. These efforts resulted in the publication of two of the four research papers in the peer-viewed literature. A third presented paper appeared in a blog because the authors wanted to disseminate their findings more quickly than through the journal literature. The presenters of the fourth paper never published their study. Real-time peer review from this study can be adapted to other professional conferences that include presented research papers. PREFACE: Electron Microscopy and Analysis Group Conference (EMAG2015)

MacLaren, Ian
2015-10-01
2015 marked a new venture for the EMAG group of the Institute of Physics in that the conference was held in conjunction with the MMC2015 conference at the wonderful Manchester Central conference centre. As anyone who was there would be able to confirm, this went exceptionally well and was a really vibrant and top quality conference. The oral sessions were filled with good talks, the poster sessions were very lively, and there was a good balance between oral sessions with a specifically "EMAG" identity, and the integration into a larger conference with the ability to switch between up to six parallel sessions covering physical sciences, techniques, and life sciences. The large conference also attracted a wide range of exhibitors, and this is essential for the ongoing success of all of our work, in a field that is very dependent on continued technical innovation and on collaborations between academic researchers and commercial developers of microscopes, holders, detectors, spectrometers, sample preparation equipment, and software, among other things. As has long been the case at EMAG, all oral and poster presenters were invited to submit papers for consideration for the proceedings. As ever, these papers were independently reviewed by other conference attendees, with the aim of continuing the long tradition of the EMAG proceedings being a top quality, peer-reviewed publication, worthy of reference in future years. Whilst I recognise that not all presenters were able to submit papers to the proceedings (for instance due to the need not to prejudice publication in some other journals, or due to avoiding duplicate publication of data), we are gratified that our presenters submitted as many papers as they did. The 41 papers included provide an interesting snapshot of many of the areas covered in the conference presentations, including functional materials, coatings, 3D microscopy, FIB and SEM, nanomaterials, magnetic and structural materials, advances in EM techniques, and EM of biological systems and biomaterials. The arrangement of the papers in the proceedings is not the same as the ordering of the conference sessions, but has been grouped by similar topics. I hope you enjoy reading these papers and that these serve as an interesting summary of what was an excellent conference. Best wishes Dr Ian MacLaren SUPA School of Physics and Astronomy University of Glasgow Glasgow G12 8QQ

Authors holding a M.Sc. or a Ph.D. degree and who are not older than 35 years of age may enter the Competition. Authors with a Ph.D. degree must present individual papers; authors with a M.Sc. degree may present papers with their supervisor as coauthor, including original results of experimental, numerical or analytic research. Six state-of-the-art keynote papers were delivered by world leading experts. All contributed papers were peer reviewed. Recommendations were received from the International Scientific Committee, reviewers and the advisory board. Accordingly, of the 163 eligible extended abstracts submitted, after a review process by the International Scientific Committee, 137 papers were selected for presentation at the 21st Fluid Mechanics Conference, 68 papers were accepted for Proceedings published in the Journal of Physics: Conference Series. The total number of submitted and accepted papers for this year's conference represents a significant increase over previous Fluid Mechanics Conferences, and has expanded its initial national character and borders which speaks to the great vitality of fluid mechanics. We hope that these proceedings will be used not only as a document of the event but also to assess achievements and new paths to be taken in fluid mechanics research. Finally, we would like to congratulate the winners of the 2014 Professor Janusz W Elsner Competition Ruri Hidema from Japan, Fernando Tejero from Spain and Lukasz Laniewski-Wollk from Poland. Acknowledgements We would like to express grateful appreciation to our colleagues from the Polish Academy of Sciences, Committee of Mechanics, as well as to the International Scientific Committee i.e. Members and the Advisory Board. Their advice and efforts have helped us to overcome the problems normally associated with organising international meetings. Special thanks goes to the reviewers for their work in encouraging the submission of papers and the subsequent review of all papers. Their contribution cannot be overestimated. The 21st Fluid Mechanics Conference was organised by AGH University of Science and Technology, the Polish Academy of Sciences the Committee of Mechanics and the AGH-UST Foundation. Proceedings was published in the Journal of Physics: Conference Series. The demanding work involved could not have been done without the contribution of so many individuals from all institutions as well as numerous external co-workers. Without their extremely valuable help such a meeting would have been impossible. Thank you all so much! Details of the committees are available in the PDF

The conference was a joint meeting of the American Meteorological Society and the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society and was cosponsored by the Australian Academy of Sciences, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, and the World Meteorological Organization. There was great interest in the conference, with 398 participants attending from 25 countries, including 92 participants from the Unites States. Student participation was strongly encouraged, and thanks to support from a number of agencies, as many as 60 students weremore » able to attend and actively contribute to the conference. The program included 110 oral and about 200 poster presentations. Each day started with two invited papers in the first morning session, followed by parallel oral sessions later in the morning and most afternoons. These were followed in turn by a poster session on three of the afternoons, with two of these days closed by a keynote address. The presentations were organized around seven major themes: general circulation, climate change, TOGA COARE and tropical studies, chemical cycles, numerical prediction and data analysis, regional studies, and Antarctic environment. The aim of the conference, to encourage greater communication between oceanographers and meteorologists interested in the Southern Hemisphere, was accomplished by including papers from both groups in each of the sessions. This review presents summaries of the invited keynote and invited papers and also briefly describes other activities of the conference.« less

PREFACE: XXII International Conference on Spectral Line Shapes 2014
NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)
Parigger, C. G.
2014-11-01
The 22nd International Conference on Spectral Line Shapes (ICSLS) was convened at The University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) at Tullahoma, Tennessee, USA, during June 1 to 6, 2014. A variety of topics of interest to the line shape community were addressed during invited and contributed oral and poster presentations. General categories of the ICSLS 2014 scientific contents included Astrophysics, Biomedical Physics, High and Low Temperature Plasma Physics, Magnetic Fusion Physics, Neutrals Atomic-Molecular-Optical (AMO) Physics, and Applied Physics. Research interests at UTSI and at the Center for Laser Applications (CLA) focus on Applied Physics and Plasma Physics areas such as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, spectroscopy with ultra-short light pulses, combustion diagnostics, to name a few. Consequently, the presentations during the conference addressed a variety of these topics. Attendance at the conference included researchers from North America, Africa, Asia and Europe, with an international representation showing 250 authors and co-authors with over 25 different citizenships, and 100 participants at the Conference. Figure 1 shows a photo of Conference attendees. The schedule included 82 contributions, 41 oral and 41 poster presentations. The 29 invited, 12 contributed oral and 41 contributed poster presentations were selected following communication with the international organizing committee members. A smart phone ''app'' was also utilized, thanks to Elsevier, to communicate electronic versions of the posters during the conference. Special thanks go to the members of the international and local committees for their work in organizing the 22nd ICSLS. In addition, thank you notes also go to the peer reviewers for the proceedings. Following the success of the IOP: Journal of Physics Conference Series selected for the 21st ICSLS publication, the proceedings papers report ongoing research activities. Papers submitted amount to 68 in number, or 83% of the 82 papers contributed to the 22nd ICSLS conference will be published in the IOP: Journal of Physics proceedings. The Executive Director of the University of Tennessee Space Institute welcomed all participants of the Conference on the first day of the technical sessions on Monday June 2, 2014. This welcome address is also included in the conference series publication, especially important for Physics and Engineering research at UTSI is the concurrent 50-year celebration of the Institute in 2014. Informal welcome occurred on Sunday June 1, 2014, and various social activities included a tour to the Jack Daniel's distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, followed by the conference dinner. The international scientific committee met to look into various aspects of the ICSLS and future role of this conference for the spectral line shape community. The next meeting locations have been discussed, including the scheduling of the next 23rd conference in Torun, Poland, in June of 2016. Further meeting locations include hosting the conference in Egypt in 2018, possibly in Luxor, Egypt. Communication regarding the 24th ICSLS in 2020 included mentioning of scheduling the Conference to occur in Dublin, Ireland. Clearly, there is a wealth of interest in continuing the long standing tradition of communicating spectral signatures and line shapes at the biannual ICSLS meetings. The 22nd International Conference on Spectral Line Shapes was supported by the Institute of Physics, the University of Tennessee Space Institute, the Center for Laser Applications, the Quantel Laser company, and by Elsevier. On behalf of the organizing committee, I greatly appreciate the support.

The "Conference on Slope Tectonics" has become an international scientific meeting point to present and discuss a variety of topics related to slope deformation and the deposits of related failures. The first conference took place on February 15-16, 2008 at University of Lausanne (Switzerland). It was followed by a second conference on September 6-10, 2011, in Austria (organized by the Geological Survey of Austria) and a third on September 8-12, 2014, in Norway (organized by the Geological Survey of Norway). The two later events included field trips. It has become a tradition that selected papers from these conference are published - papers from the first conference were published by the Geological Society as Special Publication 351 (Jaboyedoff, 2011), and those from the second conference were published in a special issue of Tectonophysics (Baron and Jaboyedoff, 2013). This special issue of Geomorphology is a collection of papers presented at the Norwegian Conference on Slope Tectonics. This collection of papers focuses on the role of tectonics in gravitationally induced rock-slope instabilities. The slopes either deform over long periods as deep-seated gravitational slope deformation (DSGSD) or more rapidly as rockslides or rock avalanches. The reconstruction of slope deformation is an integral part of the studies captured in this special issue.

2004-05-01
This special issue of Superconductor Science and Technology contains papers presented at the 6th European Conference on Applied Superconductivity (EUCAS), which was held in Sorrento, Italy, 14--18 September 2003. This important biennial event followed previous successful meetings held in Gottingen, Germany; Edinburgh, Scotland; Eindhoven, the Netherlands; Sitges (Barcelona), Spain; and Copenhagen, Denmark. Following tradition, this EUCAS conference focused on the role of superconductivity in bridging various aspects of research with a variety of concrete advanced applications. EUCAS 2003 attracted about 1000 participants from all around the world with large participation from non-European countries. This conference benefited the worldwide superconductivity community tremendously as scientists operating internationally were able to share their knowledge and experience with one another. We are grateful to all those who submitted papers to the Conference Proceedings, which will be published in an Institute of Physics Conference Series, and also to those who contributed to this special issue. Unfortunately we could not consider every one of the large number of papers submitted to this issue and we express our regret to those whose work could not be included.

PREFACE: Soft Magnetic Materials 8

Pfützner, H.
1988-01-01
The Conference "Soft Magnetic Materials 8" was held from 1 to 4 September 1987 at the Congress Centre Badgastein, Austria. It was organized by the Division of Bioelectricity and Magnetism and by the Institute of Applied and Technical Physics of the University of Technology, Vienna. The Conference was the eighth in the bi-annual series which commenced in Turin, Italy. It was attended by about 130 scientists from universities and industrial companies from 19 countries. The theme of the Conference was the recent progress in industrial applications and developments of soft magnetic alloys including magnetic measurements and field computation problems as well as fundamental aspects. In five sessions, 13 invited papers were presented in oral form. In addition, the program of poster sessions included 122 contributed papers. Regrettably, some of them were not presented when authors (especially from Eastern European countries as well as from China) were unable to be present. A clear emphasis of papers was laid on characteristics and applications of amorphous materials. As confirmed by the delegates, the spacious Congress Centre—well aerated by the near-by waterfall—provided an effective environment for informal discussions. The Conference Dinner as well as the Mountain Lodge Evening were utilized for general communications in an intensive form. However, a slight mishap of this Conference should not be concealed: Due to a thunder storm, one delegate spent a long frosty night on a rock peak of Badgasteins mountains. Still, next day he presented his excellent paper in top condition. The next Conference, SMM9, is planned to be held in El Escorial, Spain, in 1989.

This special issue of Metrologia contains selected papers from the NEWRAD 2008 Conference, held in Daejeon, Korea, on 12-16 October 2008. NEWRAD 2008 continues a series of conferences on radiometry entitled 'New Developments and Applications in Optical Radiometry', which have taken place as follows: Cambridge, MA, USA (1985) Teddington, UK (1988) Davos, Switzerland (1990) Baltimore, MD, USA (1992) Berlin, Germany (1994) Tucson, AZ, USA (1997) Madrid, Spain (1999) Gaithersburg, MD, USA (2002) Davos, Switzerland (2005) Daejeon, Korea (2008) As the first NEWRAD Conference arranged in Asia, NEWRAD 2008 opened a new era for this series of conferences. The conference was followed by a Workshop on High Temperature Fixed Points and meetings of the Working Groups of the Consultative Committee for Photometry and Radiometry (CCPR). The organizer of all these events was Dr In Won Lee of the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS). The NEWRAD Scientific Committee thanks him and his team for their tremendous efforts which maintained and developed the high standards of previous NEWRAD Conferences. The specific themes of NEWRAD 2008 included optical measurements related to displays, energy and terahertz applications. Furthermore, half a day of sessions was devoted to both remote sensing and to few-photon sources and detectors. A total of 140 papers were presented, including 11 invited and 30 contributed talks. The conference proceedings containing two-page extended abstracts were distributed to the participants as a paper volume and on a USB memory stick. The authors of selected contributions were invited to submit a full paper for this special issue. The submitted papers were handled by the normal reviewing procedures of Metrologia. On behalf of the Scientific Committee, I thank the reviewers and editorial staff of Metrologia for careful processing of the manuscripts. It is evident that this special issue, like its predecessors, will serve as an important reference for radiometry for years to come. The next conference in the series, NEWRAD 2011, will take place in Hawaii on 19-23 September 2011. The primary contact is Mark Yarbrough of the University of Hawaii Marine Center. Dr Yarbrough can be contacted via e-mail at yarbrough@mlml.calstate.edu.

The Ninth National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR 95) was held at Union College in Schenectady, New York. This annual celebration of undergraduate scholarly activity continues to elicit strong nation-wide support and enthusiasm among both students and faculty. Attendance was nearly 1,650, which included 1,213 student oral and poster presenters. For the second year in a row, many student papers had to be rejected for presentation at NCUR due to conference size limitations. Thus, submitted papers for presentation at NCUR 95 were put through a careful review process before acceptance. Those students who have been selected to have their papermore » appear in these Proceedings have been through yet a second review process. As a consequence, their work has been judged to represent an impressive level of achievement at the undergraduate level. Volume 2 contains papers related to Engineering and Mathematics (41 papers) and Physical Science (18 papers).« less

EDITORIAL: Special cluster on Dielectrics for Emerging Technologies
NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)
Clarke, R.; Youngs, I.; Stevens, G.
2004-02-01
The 2003 Conference on Dielectrics for Emerging Technologies was organised by the Institute of Physics Dielectrics Group as one of the participating conferences at the IOP Physics Congress held at Heriot-Watt University between 23 and 27 March 2003. This was the second annual conference of the new Dielectrics Group, which was formed from the former Dielectrics Society in October 2001. The conference policy remains unchanged, with the Group adopting an interdisciplinary and broadband approach to studies of the interaction of electromagnetic fields with materials. This policy is well exemplified by the papers that were delivered at this conference. The aims of the conference were three-fold: to provide a forum for the presentation of leading-edge research on emerging electromagnetic materials, to present developments on the use of dielectrics in emerging technologies and to broaden the debate on metamaterials in the UK, especially in relation to their potential applications. The metamaterials of interest here are macro- or meso-scopically structured materials that offer novel modes of electromagnetic field interaction, thereby widening the range of effective dielectric properties available to us for novel technological applications. They include `negative refractive index materials', `left handed materials', `photonic' or `electromagnetic band-gap materials' and actively-controlled or `smart' electromagnetic materials. Significant metamaterial applications are anticipated in the development of `perfect' lenses, filters, wavefront-conditioning layers and in improved metrology. The conference focussed additionally on dielectrics in support of electronics, photonics and optics, nano-materials, composites and structures, and the development of tuneable dielectrics and resonators for future applications in telecommunications. We are pleased to report that the conference was successful in achieving its objectives, thirty-four oral papers were delivered and twenty-three poster papers presented, many of which provoked significant debate. All contributions and the vigorous discussions held in this predominantly international forum testify to the health and vigour of this branch of materials physics and engineering. We were particularly pleased on this occasion to have the opportunity to run joint conference sessions with the `Structured Optical Materials' and `Electrostatics' conferences, which were run in parallel at the Congress. Electromagnetic materials science is inherently a cross-spectrum discipline and these sessions demonstrated the considerable overlap of technical interests and research from DC to optical frequencies. We are delighted to have the privilege of presenting eleven of the papers from the conference in this special cluster of Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics. Between them they capture the wide range of topics that were covered at the conference. The field of dielectric materials characterisation was well represented and amongst many other topics it included the study of nano-composites, represented here by the papers of Pelster et al and Hussain et al. Composite dielectrics at all scales lie at the centre of most new research into emerging applications and the paper by Bowler and that of Tuncer are also concerned with the understanding and characterisation of such materials. The understanding of the nature and distribution of space charge has always been a core dielectric study and a contribution to this field is made here by the paper of Marat-Mendes et al. Processing is a major factor that governs the properties of all dielectric materials---but this is particularly true in the case of sintered low-loss ceramics. The paper of Pullar et al adds to our knowledge in this important area. The remit of the conference led to the discussion of a very wide range of potential applications. One such is the use of dielectrophoretic forces for separating particles in suspensions (e.g. in pharmaceutical and diagnostic applications). The paper by Flores-Rodriguez and Markz presents a study on one aspect of this discipline. Presentations on meta- and structured materials at the conference are represented here in two papers: those of Shamonina and Solymar and of Zhou, Chan and Sheng, while a study in the closely allied area of band-gap materials is presented in the paper by Schuster and Klein. The final paper from the conference in this special cluster is concerned with an end-use application: the use of tuneable dielectric resonators in base-stations for future mobile telecoms networks. The paper by Krupka et al describes a magnetic approach to such tuning. In the longer term we sincerely hope that both the conference and these papers will prove to have made a significant contribution to the development and uses of dielectrics, and their metamaterial derivatives, in advanced technological applications. It is noteworthy that as a result of the success of this conference, the 2004 annual conference will be on the subject of `Dielectrics at Meso- and Nano-Scales'. We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to all who participated in the conference for their contributions and we would like to express our particular thanks to the authors of the papers in this special cluster of Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics.

In recent years the distributed systems community has witnessed a growth in the number of conferences, leading to difficulties in tracking the literature and a consequent loss of awareness of work done by others in this important research domain. In an attempt to synthesize many of the smaller workshops and conferences in the field, and to bring together research communities which were becoming fragmented, IFIP staged Middleware'98: The IFIP International Conference on Distributed Systems Platforms and Open Distributed Processing. The conference was widely publicized and attracted over 150 technical submissions including 135 full paper submissions. The final programme consisted of 28 papers, giving an acceptance ratio of a little over one in five. More crucially, the programme accurately reflected the state of the art in middleware research, addressing issues such as ORB architectures, engineering of large-scale systems and multimedia. The traditional role of middleware as a point of integration and service provision was clearly intact, but the programme stressed the importance of emerging `must-have' features such as support for extensibility, mobility and quality of service. The Middleware'98 conference was held in the Lake District, UK in September 1998. Over 160 delegates made the journey to one of the UK's most beautiful regions and contributed to a lively series of presentations and debates. A permanent record of the conference, including transcripts of the panel discussions which took place, is available at: http://www.comp.lancs.ac.uk/computing/middleware98/ Based on their original reviews and the reactions of delegates to the ensuing presentations we have selected six papers from the conference for publication in this special issue of Distributed Systems Engineering. The first paper, entitled `Jonathan: an open distributed processing environment in Java', by Dumant et al describes a minimal, modular ORB framework which can be used for supporting real-time and multimedia applications. The framework provides mechanisms by which services such as CORBA ORBs can be constructed as personalities which exploit the services provided by the underlying minimal kernel. The issue of engineering ORBs is taken further in the second paper, `The implementation of a high-performance ORB over multiple network transports' by Lo and Pope. This paper is of particular interest since it presents the concrete results of running a modern ORB, i.e. omniORB2, over a range of transport mechanisms, including TCP/IP, shared memory and ATM AAL5. However, in order for middleware to progress, future platforms must tackle the issue of scalability as well as that of performance. For this reason we have included two papers, `Systems support for scalable and fault tolerant Internet services' by Chawathe and Brewer and `A scalable middleware solution for advanced wide-area Web services' by van Steen et al, which address the problems inherent in developing scalable middleware. Although the two papers focus on different problems in this area, they are both motivated by the explosion of services and information made available through the World Wide Web. Indeed, the role of the World Wide Web as a component in middleware platforms featured prominently in the conference and this is reflected in our choice of the paper by Cao et al entitled `Active Cache: caching dynamic contents on the Web'. Motivated once again by the problems of scalability, Cao et al propose a system to support the caching of dynamic documents. This is achieved by enabling small applets to be cached along with pages and run by the cache servers. The issues of security, trust and resource utilization raised by such a system are explored in detail by the authors. Finally, `Mobile Java objects' by Hayton et al considers these issues still further as part of the authors' work on adding object mobility to Java. Together, the six papers contained within this issue of Distributed Systems Engineering capture the essence of Middleware'98 and demonstrate the progress that has been made in the field. Of particular note is the systems-oriented focus of these papers: the field has clearly matured beyond modelling and into the domain of advanced systems development. We hope that the papers contained here stimulate and inform you and we look forward to meeting you at a future Middleware conference.

Volume 3 contains papers related to Biological Sciences (46 papers); Chemical Sciences (21 papers); and Environmental Sciences (7 papers).« less
PREFACE: International Conference on High Pressure Science and Technology, Joint AIRAPT-22 & HPCJ-50

Viña, Luis; Tejedor, Carlos; Calleja, José M.
2010-01-01
The International Joint AIRAPT-22 & HPCJ-50 Conference was held in Odaiba, Tokyo, on 26-31 July 2009. About 480 scientists from 24 countries attended the conference and 464 papers, including 3 plenary lectures, 39 invited talks, and 156 oral presentations, were presented. It is my great pleasure to present this proceedings volume, which is based on the high quality scientific works presented at the conference. The International AIRAPT conference has been held every two years in various countries around the world since 1965, while High Pressure Conference of Japan (HPCJ) has been held annually since 1959 in various Japanese cities. Pressure is a fundamental parameter to control the property of matter. As a result, both AIRAPT and HPCJ have become highly multidisciplinary, and cover Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Biosciences, Food Science, and Technology. Although each discipline has a unique target, they all have high-pressure research in common. This proceedings volume includes about 200 papers of state-of-the-art studies from numerous fields. I hope this proceedings volume provides excellent pieces of information in various fields to further advance high-pressure research. The 1^st International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) Conference on Women in Physics, held in 2002 in Paris, France, highlighted a number of issues facing women physicists around the world. A second conference was held in May 2005 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the goal of examining the progress made since the last conference and also to provide an opportunity for the delegates to present their research, both physics research and gender-related research, and to make contacts for future collaborations. The conference was attended by 145 delegates from 42 countries, including a very diverse delegation of 22 women and men from the U.S. The conference was organized by the Working Group on Women in Physics of IUPAP, which is charged with making recommendations to IUPAP on how to attract, retain, and increase the participation of women in physics at all levels. The conference included a round table discussion on ``Research Funding and Women in Physics,'' several plenary talks, a poster session on women in physics in each country, a poster session on research by individual delegates, and discussion groups on six topics including attracting girls into physics, launching a successful career, getting women into leadership, improving the institutional climate, learning from regional differences, and balancing family and career. Conference proceedings have been published that include research abstracts, summaries from the discussion groups, articles on the plenary talks, and papers from each country on the status of women in physics in their country (proceedings can be found at http://proceedings.aip.org/proceedings/confproceed/795.jsp). This talk will discuss the U. S. delegation and their country paper on the situation for women in physics in the U.S. as well as highlights from the information presented by the delegates from other nations. The outcomes of the 2002 conference will be described briefly and then the signs of progress noted in 2005 will be summarized.

Approximately 450 people attended the conference, sharing their knowledge in the cheerful, warm atmosphere of this lovely city. The conference was extremely successful in contributing to the mission of the ICO: to contribute worldwide, on an international basis, to the progress and diffusion of scientific and technological knowledge on optics and photonics. Optics and photonics have reached a critical level of importance for the development of our societies and are present in a great many aspects of our technological progress, from communication systems supporting the Internet to the most modern techniques in medicine. Consistent with the conference slogan Enlightening the Future, the meeting stressed the importance of optical science as a key to technological progress in the coming years. UNESCO's designation of 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (www.light2015.org) acknowledges the importance of raising global awareness of how light and light-based technologies are present in a large fraction of today's advances and how they can address challenges in important areas such as energy, education, agriculture, and health. The four-day conference highlighted eleven plenary talks by outstanding scientists working in important areas of optics and photonics. A. Aspect, T. Kippenberg (2013 ICO Prize awardee) and K. Razewski (2013 ICO Galileo Galilei Award) spoke on quantum optics; P. Russell and Yu. Kivshar lectured on topics related to optical processing devices as optical fibers and metamaterials for light shaping; N. X. Fang (2011 ICO Prize), U. Woggon, and A. Alú (2013 IUPAP Young Scientists Prize) discussed applications of optics to nanoscience; and K. Dholakia and J. Widjaja (2008 Galileo Galilei Award) presented in their plenaries applications of light to the tracking and manipulation of particles. Each day, in addition to plenary talks, nine or ten parallel sessions were held covering advances in both theory and applications of optics and photonics, ranging from quantum optics to technological applications. A total of 190 talks were given. Poster sessions allowed an additional 150 presentations. Congress participants came from every one of the five continents. Included in the conference were three ceremonies for the granting of awards to plenary speakers noted above. Prizes awarded were the ICO Prize, the ICO Galileo Galilei Award, and the IUPAP young scientist Prize in Optics. Two additional prizes were awarded by OSA and SPIE to student's outstanding poster presentations. Summaries of the presentations were available to Congress attendees. In addition, a call was made for submission of elaborated papers to be peer reviewed and published in the Journal of Physics: Conference Series. Conference papers were presented on applied optics, including color science and optomechanics (7 papers), optical imaging (7 papers), biophotonics (2 papers), optical metrology (4 papers), lasers and laser processing (5 papers), optoelectronics and optical communications (6 papers), nonlinear optics (5 papers), quantum optics (4 papers) and education and sustainability (4 papers). We would like to express our gratitude to the Bureau of the International Commission for Optics, the members of the organizing and scientific advisory committees, and to the University of Vigo and the University of Santiago de Compostela for their support and help in the organization of the Conference. We finally want to acknowledge all the authors that have submitted their work to be included in this number and very specially thank all those collaborating persons who acted as reviewers of the papers included in this number for their excellent (and often little recognized) work.

It is with pleasure and pride that we present the selected contributions from participants of the 11th High-Tech Plasma Processes conference. This conference, which took place in Brussels from June 28 to July 2 2010, is based on a European forum with a history of more than twenty years. The conference series started as a thermal plasma conference and gradually expanded to include other topics and fields as well. HTPP 11 was organized in collaboration with the Belgian Interuniversity Attraction Pole (IAP): Physical chemistry of Plasma-surface Interactions (PSI-ψ). The program was devised by the plasma group of the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven in collaboration with the IAP, the Association Arc Electrique and the International Scientific Committee. The organization was guided by the Steering Committee and supervised by the two founding members, Jacques Amouroux and Pierre Fauchais. HTPP aims to bring together different scientific communities to facilitate contacts between science, technology and industry, providing a platform for the exploration of elementary processes in and by plasmas. This implies that, apart from fundamental topics, considerable attention is paid to new plasma applications; plasma engineering in Europe is one of the main driving forces behind HTPP. The conference supports the dissemination of methods for plasma diagnostics and monitoring and the exchange of models for plasmas sources and plasma applications. A novelty of HTPP 11 was the model market; a special type of poster session where running models were demonstrated and spectators were challenged to assemble their own plasma models using one of the available construction platforms. For the first time in this series of conferences, the proceedings are published in two companion issues: Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, which presents a selection of papers including invited and keynote papers, and the Journal of Physics: Conference Series. The present volume of the Journal of Physics: Conference Series includes 21 papers devoted to various branches of plasma physics. In line with the objectives of the HTPP conference, you will find papers on plasma sources, diagnostics and theory, covering the fields of thermal and non-thermal (even cold) plasmas, plasma-electrode interactions, surface treatment, synthesis, light generation and transport, and on applications in the fields of environmental technologies, biochemistry, and aeronautical and space sciences. We would like to thank the members of the various committees, the participants who sent their contributions and the referees who did an excellent job giving support to improve the manuscripts. We greatly appreciate the financial support from the conference sponsors: Association Arc Electrique, Belspo (Belgian Science Policy), Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique, Ocean Optics Inc., Technifutur - Pôle Génie Mécanique & Solvay S.A.. Yearout, R.D.
Volume 1 contains papers related to Arts and Humanities (52 papers), and Social and Behavioral Sciences (64 papers).« less
