    Measurement of environmentally small but detectable amounts of curium requires reliable, accureate, and sensitive analytical methods. The radiochemical separation developed at Woods Hole is briefly reviewed with specific reference to radiochemical interferences in the alpha spectrometric measurement of curium nuclides and to the relative amounts of interferences expected in different oceanic regimes and sample types. Detection limits for 242 Cm and 244 Cm are ultimately limited by their presence in the 243Am used as curium yield monitor. Environmental standard reference materials are evaluated with regard to curium. The marine literature is reviewed and curium measurements are discussed in relation to their source of introduction to the environment. Sources include ocean dumping of low-level radioactive wastes and discharges from nuclear fuel reporcessing activities, In particular, the question of a detectable presence of 244Cm in global fallout from nuclear weapons testing is addressed and shown to be essentially negligible. Analyses of Scottish coastal sedimantes show traces of 242Cm and 244Cm activity which are believed to originate from transport from sources in the Irish Sea.

    Two isotopes of the element with atomic number 96 have been produced by the helium-ion bombardment of plutonium. The name curium, symbol Cm, is proposed for element 96. The chemical experiments indicate that the most stable oxidation state of curium is the III state.

    Curium hydrides were prepared by reaction of curium-248 metal with hydrogen and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction. Several of the syntheses resulted in a hexagonal compound with average lattice parameters of a0 = 0.3769(8) nm and c0 = 0.6732(12) nm. These products are considered to be CmH 3-δ by analogy with the behavior of lanthanide-hydrogen and lighter actinide-hydrogen systems. Face-centered cubic products with an average lattice parameter of a0 = 0.5322(4) nm were obtained from other curium hydride preparations. This parameter is slightly smaller than that reported previously for cubic curium dihydride, CmH 2+ x (B. M. Bansal and D. Damien, Inorg. Nucl. Chem. Lett., 6, 603, 1970). The present results established a continuation of typical heavy trivalent lanthanide-like behavior of the transuranium actinide-hydrogen systems through curium.

  7. PROCESS FOR SEPARATING AMERICIUM AND CURIUM FROM RARE EARTH ELEMENTS

    This invention relates to methods of separating americium and curium values from rare earth values. In accordance with the invention americium, curium, and rare earth values are sorbed on an anion exchange resin. A major portion of the rare earth values are selectively stripped from the resin with a concentrated aqueous solution of lithium chloride, and americium, curium, and a minor portion of rare earth values are then stripped from the resin with a dilute aqueous solution of lithium chloride. The americium and curium values are further purified by increasing the concentration of lithium chloride in the solution to at least 8 molar and selectively extracting rare earth values from the resulting solution with a monoalkylphosphoric acid.   8. Spontaneous Partitioning of Californium from Curium: Curious Cases from the Crystallization of Curium Coordination Complexes

    The reaction of 248CmCl3 with excess 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (DPA) under mild solvothermal conditions results in crystallization of the tris-chelate complex Cm(HDPA)3·H2O. Approximately half of the curium remains in solution at the end of this process, and evaporation of the mother liquor results in crystallization of the bis-chelate complex [Cm(HDPA)- (H2DPA)(H2O)2Cl]Cl·2H2O. 248Cm is the daughter of the α decay of 252Cf and is extracted in high purity from this parent. However, trace amounts of 249,250,251Cf are still present in all samples of 248Cm. During the crystallization of Cm(HDPA)3·H2O and [Cm(HDPA)(H2DPA)(H2O)2Cl]Cl·2H2O, californium(III) spontaneously separates itself from the curium complexes and is foundmore » doped within crystals of DPA in the form of Cf(HDPA)3. These results add to the growing body of evidence that the chemistry of californium is fundamentally different from that of earlier actinides.« less

  9. Importance of counteranions on the hydration structure of the curium ion

    Using density functional theory based ab initio molecular dynamics and metadynamics we show that counter ions can trigger noticeable changes in the hydration shell structure of the curium ion. The free energies of curium-water coordination and the solvent hydrogen bond (HB) lifetimes in the absence and presence the counter anions predict that chloride and bromide counter anions strengthen the first shell and consequently the 8-fold coordination state is dominant by at least 98%. In contrast, the perchlorate counter anions are found to weaken the coordination shell and the HB network, with the 9-fold and 8-fold states existing in an 8:1more » ratio, which is in good agreement with reported 9:1 ratio seen in time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy experiments. To our knowledge this is the first time molecular simulations have shown that counter anions can directly affect the first hydration shell structure of a cation.« less

    The fluorescence spectrum of trivalent europium in aqueous solutions of thenoyltrifluoroacetone, excited by a nitrogen laser with emission wavelength 337 nm, exhibits bands at 582, 593, 616, 650, and 695 nm. Two bands appear in the fluorescence spectrum of trivalent curium under the same conditions - at 598 and 607 nm. The times of quenching of the fluorescence of the ions of these elements were measured, both in H/sub 2/O medium and in D/sub 2/O. A linear relationship was found between the fluorescence intensity of europium and curium and their concentration in TTA solution. The limit of determination of europiummore » and curium by the fluorescent method with laser excitation using the bands at 615 and 607 nm proved equal to 0.3 and 0.07 ng/ml, respectively.« less

  13. Remote micro-encapsulation of curium-gold cermets

    A technique has been developed to produce miniature, high-density capsules of curium-244 oxide contained in three concentric jackets of metallic gold or silver. The final capsules are right circular cylinders, 6.350 mm diameter by (3.18±0.05) mm long, with a minimum density of 11.0 g/cm 3. Each level of containment was soldered or brazed closed, with the outer surface free of detectable alpha contamination. Fabrication was performed in three separate small cells operated by standard master-slave manipulators. Production capsules have been stored for up to five years without indication of dimensional growth or leakage of radioactive contents. The dimensional stability of the capsules is attributed to the microporous structure of the plated-gold structure which permits helium gas resulting from alpha decay to diffuse through the capsule wall while retaining all radioactive materials.

  14. An LDA+U study of the photoemission spectra of ground state phase of americium and curium

    We have investigated the photoemission spectra and other ground state properties such as equilibrium volume and bulk modulus of dhcp americium and the density of states and magnetic properties of dhcp curium using LDA+U method. Our calculations show that spin polarized americium is energetically favorable but spin degenerate configuration produces experimental quantities much better than that calculated using spin polarized configuration. The DOS calculated using LDA+U with both non-magnetic and spin polarized configurations is compared and the non-magnetic DOS is shown to be in good agreement with experimental photoemission spectra when U=4.5 eV. In spin polarized case, U is observed to increase the splitting between occupied and unoccupied bands by enhancing Stoner parameter. The results are shown to be in good agreement with that calculated using dynamical mean field theory for these two heavy actinides. For curium, exchange interaction appears to play the dominant role in its magnetic stability.

    The discoveries of americium and curium were made only after Seaborg had formulated his actinide concept in order to design the chemistry needed to separate them from irradiated /sup 239/Pu targets. Their discoveries thus furnished the first clear-cut evidence that the series exists and justified Seaborg`s bold assumption that even though Th and Pa appeared to presage a following 6d series, the pattern established by the periodic table after Cs and Ba would be repeated exactly after Fr and Ra. That is to say, a new 5f element rare earth series (the actinides) would follow Ac in the same way the 4f rare earth series (the lanthanides) follows La. The consequences of the resulting half-filled 5f/sup 7/ shell at Cm were originally presented by Seaborg as a test of his hypothesis. Recent research is outlined that substantiates Seaborg`s predictions in new and definitive ways.

    Extensive observations and analyses of the emission spectra of neutral and singly ionized curium, Cm I and Cm II, have resulted in the determination of 785 Cm I and 598 Cm II energy levels. These levels then combine to classify 9145 of the more than 14,250 lines of /sup 244/Cm observed between 240 and 2650 nm. Most of the levels have Lande g-values from Zeeman effect data and isotope shifts trom measurements of spectra from sources with various enrichments of /sup 244/Cm, /sup 245/Cm, /sup 246/Cm, and /sup 248/Cm. These data allowed many levels to be assigned to specific electronicmore » configurations. The ground configurations of Cm I and Cm II are (Rn) 5f/sup 7/6d7s/sup 2/ and (Rn) 5f/sup 7/7s/sup 2/, respectively.     Using the recently proposed unified ternary fission model (UTFM), the tripartition of ^{236}U isotope was studied for all possible fragmentations, in which the interacting potential barrier is taken as the sum of the Coulomb and proximity potentials with fragments in collinear configuration. The highest yield is obtained for the fragmentation ^{48}Ca{+}^{58}Ti{+}^{130}Sn and next highest yield is found for ^{58}Cr{+}^{46}Ar{+}^{132}Sn, which stress the importance of doubly magic or near doubly magic nuclei in the tripartition of ^{236}U isotope. The formation of ^{68}Ni and ^{70}Ni as the edge fragments linking the doubly magic nucleus ^{132}Sn by the isotope of Si is in good agreement with experimental and theoretical studies, in the collinear cluster tripartition of ^{236}U isotope which reveals the reliability of our model (UTFM) in ternary fission.

    236U is a long-lived radioactive isotope which is produced principally by thermal neutron capture on 235U. 236U may be potentially applied in geological research and nuclear safeguards. Accelerator mass spectrometry is presently the most sensitive technique for the measurement of 236U and a measurement method for long-lived heavy ion 236U has been developed. The set-up uses a dedicated injector and the newly proposed 208Pb 16O2- molecular ions for the simulation of 236U ion transport. A sensitivity of lower than 10 -10 has been achieved for the isotopic ratio 236U/ 238U in present work.

    The structural, electronic, elastic and thermodynamic properties of Curium Monopnictides CmX (X = N, P, As, Sb and Bi) are investigated using first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) and full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method under ambient condition and high pressure. The exchange-correlation term is treated using two approximations spin-polarized local density approximation (LSDA) and spin-polarized generalized gradient approximation generalized (GGA). The structural parameters such as the equilibrium lattice parameters, bulk modulus and the total energies are calculated in two phases: namely NaCl (B1) and CsCl (B2). The obtained results are compared with the previous theoretical and experimental results. A structural phase transition from B1 phase to B2 phase for Curium pnictides has been obtained. The highest transition pressure is 122 GPa for CmN and the lowest one is 10.0 GPa for CmBi compound. The electronic properties show that these materials exhibit half-metallic behavior in both phases. The magnetic moment is found to be around 7.0 μB. The mechanical properties of CmX (X = N, P, As, Sb and Bi) are predicted from the calculated elastic constants. Our calculated results are in good agreement with the theoretical results in literature. The effect of pressure and temperature on the thermodynamic properties like the cell volume, bulk modulus and the specific heats C𝜗 and CP, the entropy 𝒮 and the Grüneisen parameter γ have been foreseen at expanded pressure and temperature ranges.

  5. Excess of (236)U in the northwest Mediterranean Sea.

    In this work, we present first (236)U results in the northwestern Mediterranean. (236)U is studied in a seawater column sampled at DYFAMED (Dynamics of Atmospheric Fluxes in the Mediterranean Sea) station (Ligurian Sea, 43°25'N, 07°52'E). The obtained (236)U/(238)U atom ratios in the dissolved phase, ranging from about 2×10(-9) at 100m depth to about 1.5×10(-9) at 2350m depth, indicate that anthropogenic (236)U dominates the whole seawater column. The corresponding deep-water column inventory (12.6ng/m(2) or 32.1×10(12) atoms/m(2)) exceeds by a factor of 2.5 the expected one for global fallout at similar latitudes (5ng/m(2) or 13×10(12) atoms/m(2)), evidencing the influence of local or regional (236)U sources in the western Mediterranean basin. On the other hand, the input of (236)U associated to Saharan dust outbreaks is evaluated. An additional (236)U annual deposition of about 0.2pg/m(2) based on the study of atmospheric particles collected in Monaco during different Saharan dust intrusions is estimated. The obtained results in the corresponding suspended solids collected at DYFAMED station indicate that about 64% of that (236)U stays in solution in seawater. Overall, this source accounts for about 0.1% of the (236)U inventory excess observed at DYFAMED station. The influence of the so-called Chernobyl fallout and the radioactive effluents produced by the different nuclear installations allocated to the Mediterranean basin, might explain the inventory gap, however, further studies are necessary to come to a conclusion about its origin.     The structural, electronic, dynamical and thermodynamical properties of CmX (X = N, P, As, Sb, and Bi) compounds are studied using first principles calculations within density functional theory. The Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof spin polarized generalized gradient approximation and Perdew-Wang (PW) spin polarized local density approximation as the exchange correlational functionals are used in these calculations. There is a good agreement between the present and previously reported data. The calculated electronic density of states suggests that the curium monopnictides are metallic in nature, which is consistent with earlier studies. The significant values of magnetic moment suggest their magnetic nature. The phonon dispersion curves and phonon density of states are also calculated, which depict the dynamical stability of these compounds. There is a significant separation between the optical and acoustical phonon branches. The temperature dependence of the thermodynamical functions are also calculated and discussed. Internal energy and vibrational contribution to the Helmholtz free energy increases and decreases, respectively, with temperature. The entropy increases with temperature. The specific heat at constant volume and Debye temperature obey Debye theory. The temperature variation of the considered thermodynamical functions is in line with those of other crystalline solids.

    The sterically constrained, macrocyclic, aqueous soluble ligand N,N'-bis[(6-carboxy-2-pyridyl)methyl]-1,10-diaza-18-crown-6 (H2BP18C6) was investigated for separating americium from curium and all the lanthanides by solvent extraction. Pairing H2BP18C6, which favors complexation of larger f-element cations, with acidic organophosphorus extractants that favor extraction of smaller f-element cations, such as bis-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (HDEHP) or (2-ethylhexyl)phosphonic acid mono(2-ethylhexyl) ester (HEH[EHP]), created solvent extraction systems with good Cm/Am selectivity, excellent trans-lanthanide selectivity (Kex,Lu/Kex,La = 108), but poor selectivity for Am against the lightest lanthanides. However, using an organic phase containing both a neutral extractant, N,N,N’,N’-tetra(2-ethylhexyl)diglycolamide (TEHDGA), and HEH[EHP] enabled rejection of the lightest lanthanides during loading ofmore » the organic phase from aqueous nitric acid, eliminating their interference in the americium stripping stages.
