When an LLC-type parallel resonant converter (LLC-PRC) operates above resonant frequency, the switching transistors can be turned off at zero voltage. Further study reveals that the LLC-PRC possesses the advantage of lower converter voltage gain as compared with the conventional PRC. Based on analytic results, a complete set of design curves is obtained, from which a systematic design procedure is developed. Experimental results from a 150 W 150 kHz multioutput LLC-type PRC power supply are presented.

Eagle-Picher currently has several advanced nickel-hydrogen (NiH2) cell component and battery designs under development including common pressure vessel (CPV), single pressure vessel (SPV), and dependent pressure vessel (DPV) designs. A CPV NiH2 battery, utilizing low-cost 64 mm (2.5 in.) cell diameter technology, has been designed and built for multiple smallsat programs, including the TUBSAT B spacecraft which is currently scheduled (24 Nov. 93) for launch aboard a Russian Proton rocket. An advanced 90 mm (3.5 in.) NiH2 cell design is currently being manufactured for the Space Station Freedom program. Prototype 254 mm (10 in.) diameter SPV batteries are currently under construction and initial boilerplate testing has shown excellent results. NiH2 cycle life testing is being continued at Eagle-Picher and IPV cells have currently completed more than 89,000 accelerated LEO cycles at 15% DOD, 49,000 real-time LEO cycles at 30 percent DOD, 37,800 cycles under a real-time LEO profile, 30 eclipse seasons in accelerated GEO, and 6 eclipse seasons in real-time GEO testing at 75 percent DOD maximum. Nickel-metal hydride battery development is continuing for both aerospace and electric vehicle applications. Eagle-Picher has also developed an extensive range of battery evaluation, test, and analysis (BETA) measurement and control equipment and software, based on Hewlett-Packard computerized data acquisition/control hardware.

FCA US LLC viewed this DOE funding as a historic opportunity to begin the process of achieving required economies of scale on technologies for electric vehicles. The funding supported FCA US LLC’s light-duty electric drive vehicle and charging infrastructure-testing activities and enabled FCA US LLC to utilize the funding on advancing Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) technologies to future programs. FCA US LLC intended to develop the next generations of electric drive and energy batteries through a properly paced convergence of standards, technology, components, and common modules, as well as first-responder training and battery recycling. Serial analysis of gene expression studies led us to identify a previously unknown gene, c20orf85, that is present in the normal lung epithelium, but absent or downregulated in most primary non-small cell lung cancers and lung cancer cell lines. We named this gene LLC1 for Low in Lung Cancer 1. LLC1 is located on chromosome 20q13.3 and has a 70% GC content in the promoter region. It has 4 exons and encodes a protein containing 137 amino acids. By in situ hybridization, we observed that LLC1 message is localized in normal lung bronchial epithelial cells, but absent in 13 of 14 lung adenocarcinoma and 9 out of 10 lung squamous carcinoma samples. Methylation at CpG sites of the LLC1 promoter was frequently observed in lung cancer cell lines and in a fraction of primary lung cancer tissues. Treatment with 5-aza deoxycytidine resulted in a reduced methylation of the LLC1 promoter concomitant with the increase of LLC1 expression. These results suggest that inactivation of LLC1 by means of promoter methylation is a frequent event in nonsmall cell lung cancer and may play a role in lung tumorigenesis. PMID:17304513

Industrial scientific research labs have become increasingly stressed in recent years by a variety of external forces. Both corporations and government funding agencies have shifted their priorities from long-term fundamental research toward projects that have a high probability of shorter-term payoff. Industrial funding has been further stressed by an increasing demand for quarterly results and fierce global competition. Industry leaders are now asking their R&D labs for ``home runs” and not just a solid base in the physical sciences. The end of the Cold War has also left the US without a declared enemy whose overt intention was to defeat us through a mastery of large-scale weaponry based upon exploitation of fundamental physics. This, when combined with a bona-fide need for technology gap fillers to respond to on-the-ground threats in the current Middle East conflicts, has led to diminished government emphasis on long-term research in the physical sciences. Simultaneously, the global sources of R&D spending are expanding. The dramatic growth of private equity in the technology development arena has both drawn talent from industry and changed the expectations on researchers. R&D spending in China, India and many other countries is growing significantly. Thus, in order to become relevant, industry must now keep its finger on the pulse of the hundreds of billions of dollars being invested privately and publicly around the world. HRL Laboratories, LLC in Malibu, California represents a unique and successful new business model for industrial R&D. HRL was founded by Howard Hughes in 1948 as the Hughes Research Laboratory and for more than four decades was the internal R&D lab for the Hughes Aircraft Company. After a series of mergers, acquisitions and divestitures over the past 15 years, HRL is now a stand-alone LLC that is owned jointly by General Motors and the Boeing Company. Colorado-based Black Swift Technologies (BST) created a small unmanned aircraft system(sUAS) to help NASA get a clearer picture of soil moisture through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Soil moisture is defined in terms of volume of water per unit volume of soil. Using BSTs sUAS, NASA scientists can gather ground truth measurements for a clearer observation by getting closer to the source. This can help rule out misleading results generated by satellite imagery.

Ultra high thread-level parallelism in modern GPUs usually introduces numerous memory requests simultaneously. So there are always plenty of memory requests waiting at each bank of the shared LLC (L2 in this paper) and global memory. For global memory, various schedulers have already been developed to adjust the request sequence. But we find few work has ever focused on the service sequence on the shared LLC. We measured that a big number of GPU applications always queue at LLC bank for services, which provide opportunity to optimize the service order on LLC. Through adjusting the GPU memory request service order, we can improve the schedulability of SM. So we proposed a critical-aware shared LLC request scheduling algorithm (CaLRS) in this paper. The priority representative of memory request is critical for CaLRS. We use the number of memory requests that originate from the same warp but have not been serviced when they arrive at the shared LLC bank to represent the criticality of each warp. Experiments show that the proposed scheme can boost the SM schedulability effectively by promoting the scheduling priority of the memory requests with high criticality and improves the performance of GPU indirectly. Using fiber electrode technology, currently produced by Bekaert Corporation (Bekaert), Electro Energy, Inc., (EEI) Mobile Energy Products Group (formerly, Eagle-Picher Technologies, LLC., Power Systems Department) in Colorado Springs, CO has demonstrated that it is feasible to manufacture flight weight nickel-hydrogen cells having about twice the specific energy (80 vs. 40 watt-hr/kg) as state-of-the-art nickel-hydrogen cells that are flown on geosynchronous communications satellites. Although lithium-ion battery technology has made large in-roads to replace the nickel-alkaline technology (nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride), the technology offered here competes with lithium-ion weight and offers alternatives not present in the lithium-ion chemistry such as ability to undergo continuous overcharge, reversal on discharge and sustain rate capability sufficient to start automotive and aircraft engines at subzero temperatures. In development to date seven 50 ampere-hour nickel-hydrogen have been constructed, acceptance tested and briefly tested in a low earth orbit (LEO) cycle regime. The effort was jointly funded by Electro Energy, Inc. and NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, OH. Five of the seven cells have been shipped to NASA GRC for further cycle testing. Two of the cells experienced failure due to internal short circuits during initial cycle testing at EEL Destructive Physical Analysis (DPA) of one of the cells has shown the failure mode to be due to inadequate hydrogen catalyst electrodes that were not capacity balanced with the higher energy density nickel oxide electrodes. In the investigators opinion, rebuild of the cells using proper electrode balance would result in cells that could sustain over 30,000 cycles at moderate depths-of-discharge in a LEO regime or endure over 20 years of geosynchronous orbit (GEO) cycling while realizing a two-fold increase in specific energy for the battery or a 1.1 kg weight savings per 50 ampere-hour cell.
