  18. Modelling and Prediction of Spark-ignition Engine Power Performance Using Incremental Least Squares Support Vector Machines

    NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)

Wong, Pak-kin; Vong, Chi-man; Wong, Hang-cheong; Li, Ke

    2010-05-01

Modern automotive spark-ignition (SI) power performance usually refers to output power and torque, and they are significantly affected by the setup of control parameters in the engine management system (EMS). EMS calibration is done empirically through tests on the dynamometer (dyno) because no exact mathematical engine model is yet available. With an emerging nonlinear function estimation technique of Least squares support vector machines (LS-SVM), the approximate power performance model of a SI engine can be determined by training the sample data acquired from the dyno. A novel incremental algorithm based on typical LS-SVM is also proposed in this paper, so the power performance models built from the incremental LS-SVM can be updated whenever new training data arrives. With updating the models, the model accuracies can be continuously increased. The predicted results using the estimated models from the incremental LS-SVM are good agreement with the actual test results and with the almost same average accuracy of retraining the models from scratch, but the incremental algorithm can significantly shorten the model construction time when new training data arrives.

A mock-up for the development of the Engineering Model (EM) and Flight Model (FM) is introduced which shortens the delay of 7 weeks regarding the previous planned launch date of September 30, to about 3 weeks maintaining the 4 weeks reserve is discussed. As compared with the new assembly integration test (EM-AIT) schedule of March 11, 1985, the EM data handling system is on the critical path. For the attitude measurement and control subsystem, sufficiently flexibility is achieved through combination of dummies and EM hardware to catch up with the existing delays.

The results of the NEXT 2000 h wear test are presented. This test was conducted with a 40 cm engineering model ion engine, designated EM1, at a 3.52 A beam current and 1800 V beam power supply voltage. Performance tests, which were conducted over a throttling range of 1.1 to 6.9 kW throughout the wear test, demonstrated that EM1 satisfied all thruster performance requirements. The ion engine accumulated 2038 h of operation at a thruster input power of 6.9 kW, processing 43 kg of xenon. Overall ion engine performance, which includes thrust, thruster input power, specific impulse, and thrust efficiency, was steady with no indications of performance degradation. The ion engine was also inspected following the test. This paper presents these findings.

  16. Optimal trajectories for an aerospace plane. Part 1: Formulation, results, and analysis

    NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)

    Miele, Angelo; Lee, W. Y.; Wu, G. D.

    1990-01-01

The optimization of the trajectories of an aerospace plane is discussed. This is a hypervelocity vehicle capable of achieving orbital speed, while taking off horizontally. The vehicle is propelled by four types of engines: turbojet engines for flight at subsonic speeds/low supersonic speeds; ramjet engines for flight at moderate supersonic speeds/low hypersonic speeds; scramjet engines for flight at hypersonic speeds; and rocket engines for flight at near-orbital speeds. A single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) configuration is considered, and the transition from low supersonic speeds to orbital speeds is studied under the following assumptions: the turbojet portion of the trajectory has been completed; the aerospace plane is controlled via the angle of attack and the power setting; the aerodynamic model is the generic hypersonic aerodynamics model example (GHAME). Concerning the engine model, three options are considered: (EM1), a ramjet/scramjet combination in which the scramjet specific impulse tends to a nearly-constant value at large Mach numbers; (EM2), a ramjet/scramjet combination in which the scramjet specific impulse decreases monotonically at large Mach numbers; and (EM3), a ramjet/scramjet/rocket combination in which, owing to stagnation temperature limitations, the scramjet operates only at M approx. less than 15; at higher Mach numbers, the scramjet is shut off and the aerospace plane is driven only by the rocket engines. Under the above assumptions, four optimization problems are solved using the sequential gradient-restoration algorithm for optimal control problems: (P1) minimization of the weight of fuel consumed; (P2) minimization of the peak dynamic pressure; (P3) minimization of the peak heating rate; and (P4) minimization of the peak tangential acceleration.

Protein-protein interactions carry out a large variety of essential cellular processes. Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) is a powerful technique for the modeling of protein-protein interactions at a wide range of resolutions, and recent developments have caused a revolution in the field. At low resolution, cryo-EM maps can drive integrative modeling of the interaction, assembling existing structures into the map. Other experimental techniques can provide information on the interface or on the contacts between the monomers in the complex. This inevitably raises the question regarding which type of data is best suited to drive integrative modeling approaches. Systematic comparison of the prediction accuracy and specificity of the different integrative modeling paradigms is unavailable to date. Here, we compare EM-driven, interface-driven, and contact-driven integrative modeling paradigms. Models were generated for the protein docking benchmark using the ATTRACT docking engine and evaluated using the CAPRI two-star criterion. At 20 Å resolution, EM-driven modeling achieved a success rate of 100%, outperforming the other paradigms even with perfect interface and contact information. Therefore, even very low resolution cryo-EM data is superior in predicting heterodimeric and heterotrimeric protein assemblies. Our study demonstrates that a force field is not necessary, cryo-EM data alone is sufficient to accurately guide the monomers into place. The resulting rigid models successfully identify regions of conformational change, opening up perspectives for targeted flexible remodeling. Copyright © 2016 Biophysical Society. 2. Assessing the potential for improved scramjet performance through application of electromagnetic flow control

    NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)

    Lindsey, Martin Forrester

Sustained hypersonic flight using scramjet propulsion is the key technology bridging the gap between turbojets and the exoatmospheric environment where a rocket is required. Recent efforts have focused on electromagnetic (EM) flow control to mitigate the problems of high thermomechanical loads and low propulsion efficiencies associated with scramjet propulsion. This research effort is the first flight-scale, three-dimensional computational analysis of a realistic scramjet to determine how EM flow control can improve scramjet performance. Development of a quasi-one dimensional design tool culminated in the first open source geometry of an entire scramjet flowpath. This geometry was then tested extensively with the Air Force Research Laboratory's three-dimensional Navier-Stokes and EM coupled computational code. As part of improving the model fidelity, a loosely coupled algorithm was developed to incorporate thermochemistry. This resulted in the only open-source model of fuel injection, mixing and combustion in a magnetogasdynamic (MGD) flow controlled engine. In addition, a control volume analysis tool with an electron beam ionization model was presented for the first time in the context of the established computational method used. Local EM flow control within the internal inlet greatly impacted drag forces and wall heat transfer but was only marginally successful in raising the average pressure entering the combustor. The use of an MGD accelerator to locally increase flow momentum was an effective approach to improve flow into the scramjet's isolator. Combustor-based MGD generators proved superior to the inlet generator with respect to power density and overall engine efficiency. MGD acceleration was shown to be ineffective in improving overall performance, with all of the bypass engines having approximately 33% more drag than baseline and none of them achieving a self-powered state.

  19. Investigation of probabilistic principal component analysis compared to proper orthogonal decomposition methods for basis extraction and missing data estimation

    NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)

    Lee, Kyunghoon

To evaluate the maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) of probabilistic principal component analysis (PPCA) parameters such as a factor-loading, PPCA can invoke an expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm, yielding an EM algorithm for PPCA (EM-PCA). In order to examine the benefits of the EM-PCA for aerospace engineering applications, this thesis attempts to qualitatively and quantitatively scrutinize the EM-PCA alongside both POD and gappy POD using high-dimensional simulation data. In pursuing qualitative investigations, the theoretical relationship between POD and PPCA is transparent such that the factor-loading MLE of PPCA, evaluated by the EM-PCA, pertains to an orthogonal basis obtained by POD. By contrast, the analytical connection between gappy POD and the EM-PCA is nebulous because they distinctively approximate missing data due to their antithetical formulation perspectives: gappy POD solves a least-squares problem whereas the EM-PCA relies on the expectation of the observation probability model. To juxtapose both gappy POD and the EM-PCA, this research proposes a unifying least-squares perspective that embraces the two disparate algorithms within a generalized least-squares framework. As a result, the unifying perspective reveals that both methods address similar least-squares problems; however, their formulations contain dissimilar bases and norms. Furthermore, this research delves into the ramifications of the different bases and norms that will eventually characterize the traits of both methods. To this end, two hybrid algorithms of gappy POD and the EM-PCA are devised and compared to the original algorithms for a qualitative illustration of the different basis and norm effects. After all, a norm reflecting a curve-fitting method is found to more significantly affect estimation error reduction than a basis for two example test data sets: one is absent of data only at a single snapshot and the other misses data across all the snapshots. From a numerical performance aspect, the EM-PCA is computationally less efficient than POD for intact data since it suffers from slow convergence inherited from the EM algorithm. For incomplete data, this thesis quantitatively found that the number of data missing snapshots predetermines whether the EM-PCA or gappy POD outperforms the other because of the computational cost of a coefficient evaluation, resulting from a norm selection. For instance, gappy POD demands laborious computational effort in proportion to the number of data-missing snapshots as a consequence of the gappy norm. In contrast, the computational cost of the EM-PCA is invariant to the number of data-missing snapshots thanks to the L2 norm. In general, the higher the number of data-missing snapshots, the wider the gap between the computational cost of gappy POD and the EM-PCA. Based on the numerical experiments reported in this thesis, the following criterion is recommended regarding the selection between gappy POD and the EM-PCA for computational efficiency: gappy POD for an incomplete data set containing a few data-missing snapshots and the EM-PCA for an incomplete data set involving multiple data-missing snapshots. Last, the EM-PCA is applied to two aerospace applications in comparison to gappy POD as a proof of concept: one with an emphasis on basis extraction and the other with a focus on missing data reconstruction for a given incomplete data set with scattered missing data. The first application exploits the EM-PCA to efficiently construct reduced-order models of engine deck responses obtained by the numerical propulsion system simulation (NPSS), some of whose results are absent due to failed analyses caused by numerical instability. Model-prediction tests validate that engine performance metrics estimated by the reduced-order NPSS model exhibit considerably good agreement with those directly obtained by NPSS. Similarly, the second application illustrates that the EM-PCA is significantly more cost effective than gappy POD at repairing spurious PIV measurements obtained from acoustically-excited, bluff-body jet flow experiments. The EM-PCA reduces computational cost on factors 8 ˜ 19 compared to gappy POD while generating the same restoration results as those evaluated by gappy POD. All in all, through comprehensive theoretical and numerical investigation, this research establishes that the EM-PCA is an efficient alternative to gappy POD for an incomplete data set containing missing data over an entire data set.
