Increased blood pressure and high dietary salt are leading risks for death and disability globally. Reducing the burden of both health risks are United Nations' targets for reducing noncommunicable disease. Nongovernmental organizations and individuals can assist by ensuring widespread dissemination of the best available facts and recommended interventions for both health risks. Simple but impactful fact sheets can be useful for informing the public, healthcare professionals, and policy makers. The World Hypertension League has developed fact sheets on dietary salt and hypertension but in many circumstances the greatest impact would be obtained from national-level fact sheets. This manuscript provides instructions and a template for developing fact sheets based on the Global Burden of Disease study and national survey data. ©2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Are we reaching the target audience? Evaluation of a fish fact sheet.
Burger, J; Waishwell, L
2001-09-28
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, over 16% of freshwater lakes and 7% of the rivers are under some sort of fish consumption advisory because of the presence of toxic chemicals. There is considerable interest in the issuing of information, advisories, and fact sheets concerning the consumption of wild-caught fish from contaminated waters, and in the actual consumption patterns of subsistence and recreational anglers. Despite the large number of consumption advisories issued by state agencies, there is little information on how these advisories, or other forms of risk communication, are perceived by target audiences, notably fishermen and women of child-bearing age. The states of South Carolina and Georgia issue consumption advisories for fish from the Savannah River, among other sites. To gain a greater insight into the perception of anglers about a supplemental fish fact sheet jointly developed by South Carolina, Georgia, federal agencies, and the Consortium for Risk Evaluation with Stakeholder Participation, we interviewed fisherman along the Savannah River. The objectives were to determine: (1) whether they had previously read the Fish Fact Sheet or had heard about the consumption advisories; (2) what major message they obtained from the sheet; (3) who they felt the fact sheet was aimed at, and who should get the Fish Fact Sheet; (4) who should be concerned about health risks from consuming the fish; and (5) the best method of disseminating such information. We interviewed 92 fishermen (37% black, 62% white) during the fishing season of 1999. Half had heard some information about consumption advisories, mainly from the media (64%). The study concluded that there were no ethnic differences in whether they had heard about the advisories, understood the major message of the fact sheet, felt they could reduce their risk from consuming the fish, or felt that it made a difference which agency issued the fact sheet. There were significant ethnic differences in the ways people thought the risk from eating fish could be reduced, sources of information about the risks from consuming fish, and what other information they would like about the risks associated with contaminated fish.

Background Informed consent is intended to ensure that individuals understand the purpose, risks, and benefits of research studies, and then can decide, voluntarily, whether to enroll. However, research suggests that consent procedures do not always lead to adequate participant understanding and may be longer and more complex than necessary. Studies also suggest some consent interventions, including enhanced consent forms and extended discussions with patients, increase understanding, yet methodologic challenges have been raised in studying consent in actual trial settings. This study aimed to examine the feasibility of testing two consent interventions in actual studies and also to measure effectiveness of interventions in improving understanding of trials. Methods Participants enrolling in any of eight ongoing clinical trials (“collaborating studies”) were, for the purposes of this study, sequentially assigned to one of three study arms involving different informed consent procedures (one control and two intervention). Control participants received standard consent form and processes. Participants in the 1st intervention arm received a bulleted fact-sheet providing simple summaries of all study components in addition to the standard consent form. Participants in the 2nd intervention arm received the bulleted fact-sheet and standard consent materials and then also engaged with a member of the collaborating study staff in a feedback Q&A session. Following consent procedures, we administered closed and open ended questions to assess patient understanding and we assessed literacy level. Descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were generated to assess correlations; regression analysis determined predictors of patient understanding. Results 144 participants enrolled. Using regression analysis participants receiving the 2nd intervention, which included a standard consent form, bulleted fact sheet and structured question and answer session with a study staff member, had open-ended question scores that were 7.6 percentage points higher (p=.02) than participants who received the control arm (standard consent only), although unadjusted comparisons did not reach statistical significance. Eleven clinical trial investigators agreed to participate and 8 trials provided sufficient data to be included, thereby demonstrating feasibility of consent research in actual settings. Conclusions Our study supports the hypothesis that patients receiving both bulleted fact sheets and a question and answer session have higher understanding compared to patients receiving standard consent form and procedures alone. Fact sheets and short structured dialog are quick to administer and easy to replicate across studies and should be tested in larger samples for effectiveness. PMID:25475879

Water use trends in Washington, 1985-2005
Lane, R.C.
2010-01-01
Since 1950, the U.S. Geological Survey Washington Water Science Center (USGS-WAWSC) has collected, compiled, and published, at 5-year intervals, statewide estimates of the amounts of water withdrawn and used for various purposes in Washington State. As new data and methods became available, some of the original datasets were recompiled. The most recent versions of these datasets were used in this fact sheet. The datasets are available online along with other USGS-WAWSC water-use publications at the USGS-WAWSC water use web page: http://wa.water.usgs.gov/data/wuse/. Values on these datasets and in this fact sheet may not sum to the indicated total due to independent rounding. Due to variations in data requirements, collection methods, terminology, and data sources, the direct assessment of water-use trends between compilations is difficult. This fact sheet focuses on the trends in total State and public-supplied populations, freshwater withdrawals and use, public-supply withdrawals and deliveries, and crop irrigation withdrawals and acreage in Washington from 1985 through 2005. These four categories were included in all five compilations and were the most stable in terms of data requirements, collection methods, terminology, and data sources.

Aceto, Donato Gonzalo; Astuto-Gribble, Lisa M.; Gaudioso, Jennifer M.
Numerous terrorist organizations have openly expressed interest in producing and deploying biological weapons. However, a limiting factor for many terrorists has been the acquisition of dangerous biological agents, as evidenced by the very few successful instances of biological weapons use compared to the number of documented hoaxes. Biological agents vary greatly in their ability to cause loss of life and economic damage. Some agents, if released properly, can kill many people and cause an extensive number of secondary infections; other agents will sicken only a small number of people for a short period of time. Consequently, several biological agents canmore » potentially be used to perpetrate a bioterrorism attack but few are likely capable of causing a high consequence event. It is crucial, from a US national security perspective, to more deeply understand the likelihood that terrorist organizations can acquire the range of these agents. Few studies have attempted to comprehensively compile the technical information directly relevant to the acquisition of dangerous bacteria, viruses and toxins. In this report, technical fact sheets were assembled for 46 potentially dangerous biological agents. Much of the information was taken from various research sources which could ultimately and significantly expedite and improve bioterrorism threat assessments. By systematically examining a number of specific agent characteristics included in these fact sheets, it may be possible to detect, target, and implement measures to thwart future terrorist acquisition attempts. In addition, the information in these fact sheets may be used as a tool to help laboratories gain a rudimentary understanding of how attractive a method laboratory theft is relative to other potential acquisition modes.« less

Divisions of geologic time-major chronostratigraphic and geochronologic units
,
2010-01-01
Effective communication in the geosciences requires consistent uses of stratigraphic nomenclature, especially divisions of geologic time. A geologic time scale is composed of standard stratigraphic divisions based on rock sequences and is calibrated in years. Over the years, the development of new dating methods and the refinement of previous methods have stimulated revisions to geologic time scales. Advances in stratigraphy and geochronology require that any time scale be periodically updated. Therefore, Divisions of Geologic Time, which shows the major chronostratigraphic (position) and geochronologic (time) units, is intended to be a dynamic resource that will be modified to include accepted changes of unit names and boundary age estimates. This fact sheet is a modification of USGS Fact Sheet 2007-3015 by the U.S. Geological Survey Geologic Names Committee.

The Ames Arc Jet Complex has a rich heritage of over 40 years in Thermal Protection System (TPS) development for every NASA Space Transportation and Planetary program, including Apollo, Space Shuttle, Viking, Pioneer-Venus, Galileo, Mars Pathfinder,Stardust, NASP,X-33,X-34,SHARP-B1 and B2,X-37 and Mars Exploration Rovers. With this early TPS history came a long heritage in the development of the arc jet facilities. These are used to simulate the aerodynamic heating that occurs on the nose cap, wing leading edges and on other areas of the spacecraft requiring thermal protection. TPS samples have been run in the arc jets from a few minutes to over an hour, from one exposure to multiple exposures of the same sample, in order t o understand the TPS materials response to a hot gas flow environment (representative of real hyperthermal environments experienced in flight). The Ames Arc l e t Complex is a key enabler for customers involved in the three major areas of TPS development: selection, validation, and qualification. The arc jet data are critical for validating TPS thermal models, heat shield designs and repairs, and ultimately for flight qualification.

To develop and/or update fact sheets about abatacept treatment, in order to assist physicians in the management of patients with inflammatory joint disease. 1. selection by a committee of rheumatology experts of the main topics of interest for which fact sheets were desirable 2. identification and review of publications relevant to each topic 3. development and/or update of fact sheets based on three levels of evidence: evidence-based medicine, official recommendations, and expert opinion. The experts were rheumatologists and invited specialists in other fields (dermatologist, cardiologist, pediatric rheumatologist, endocrinologist, hematologist, immunologist, infectiologist), and they had extensive experience with the management of chronic inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). They were members of the CRI (Club Rhumatismes et Inflammation), a section of the French Rheumatology Society (Societe Francaise de Rhumatologie). Each fact sheet was revised by several experts and the overall process was coordinated by three experts. Several topics of major interest were selected: contraindications of abatacept treatment; management of adverse effects and concomitant diseases that may develop during abatacept treatment; and management of common situations such as pregnancy, surgery, patient older than 75 years of age, and patients with co-morbidities (such as dialysis, hemoglobinopathy, or splenectomy). After a review of the literature and discussion among experts, a consensus was developed about the content of the fact sheets presented here. These fact sheets focus on several points: 1. in RA, initiation and monitoring of the abatacept treatment, management of patients with specific past histories, and specific clinical situations such as pregnancy 2. diseases other than RA, such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis, spondylarthropathies, or autoimmune diseases (systemic lupus erythematosus and other systemic autoimmune diseases) 3. models of letters for informing the rheumatologist and general practitioner 4. patient information about the use of abatacept in RA 5. and data on the new abatacept formulation for subcutaneous administration (approved by the FDA in August 2011 for patients with moderate-to-severe RA). These fact sheets built on evidence-based medicine and expert opinion will serve as a practical tool for assisting physicians who manage patients on abatacept. They will be available continuously on www.cri-net.com and will be updated at appropriate intervals. Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Do You Prefer to Have the Text or a Sheet with Your Physics Exams?
NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS)
Hamed, Kastro M.
2008-05-01
Many high school and introductory college physics instructors ponder the choice between "open text" exams versus "facts and formulae sheet" exams. Other alternatives are closed book/closed notes exams or an instructor-prepared sheet of facts and relevant formulas. There is no agreement on merit. Rehfuss strongly opposes allowing students to use formula sheets while taking physics exams despite acknowledging that such use is common practice. Cone2 responded to Rehfuss by defending the use of such sheets and outlining the benefits of a "cheat sheet." Debate over the use of a "cheat sheet" or other resources during exams is not limited to the physics community. Skidmore and Aagaard3 studied the relationship between testing conditions and student test scores for students in teacher education. Two decades earlier Boniface,4 Dorsal and Cundiff,5 and Hindman6 published papers on the use of texts and/or sheets during examinations in psychology and education. Others, such as Pullen et al.7 focused on studying the discarded cheat sheets themselves. Humorously, in October 2005 The New York Times8 reported an unusual museum exhibit of "cheat sheets" and the different ways students had cheated at a particular university.

Background Australian General Practitioners (GPs) are in the forefront of primary health care and in an excellent position to communicate with their patients and educate them about Complementary Medicines (CMs) use. However previous studies have demonstrated that GPs lack the knowledge required about CMs to effectively communicate with patients about their CMs use and they perceive a need for information resources on CMs to use in their clinical practice. This study aimed to develop, implement, and evaluate a CMs information resource in Queensland (Qld) general practice. Methods The results of the needs assessment survey of Qld general practitioners (GPs) informed the development of a CMs information resource which was then put through an implementation and evaluation cycle in Qld general practice. The CMs information resource was a set of evidence-based herbal medicine fact sheets. This resource was utilised by 100 Qld GPs in their clinical practice for four weeks and was then evaluated. The evaluation assessed GPs' (1) utilisation of the resource (2) perceived quality, usefulness and satisfaction with the resource and (3) perceived impact of the resource on their knowledge, attitudes, and practice of CMs. Results Ninety two out of the 100 GPs completed the four week evaluation of the fact sheets and returned the post-intervention survey. The herbal medicine fact sheets produced by this study were well accepted and utilised by Qld GPs. The majority of GPs perceived that the fact sheets were a useful resource for their clinical practice. The fact sheets improved GPs' attitudes towards CMs, increased their knowledge of those herbal medicines and improved their communication with their patients about those specific herbs. Eighty-six percent of GPs agreed that if they had adequate resources on CMs, like the herbal medicine fact sheets, then they would communicate more to their patients about their use of CMs. Conclusion Further educational interventions on CMs need to be provided to GPs to increase their knowledge of CMs and to improve their communication with patients about their CMs use.
