Wave packet analysis provides a connection between linear small disturbance theory and subsequent nonlinear turbulent spot flow behavior. The traditional association between linear stability analysis and nonlinear wave form is developed via the method of stationary phase whereby asymptotic (simplified) mean flow solutions are used to estimate dispersion behavior and stationary phase approximation are used to invert the associated Fourier transform. The resulting process typically requires nonlinear algebraic equations inversions that can be best performed numerically, which partially mitigates the value of the approximation as compared to a more complete, e.g. DNS or linear/nonlinear adjoint methods. To obtain a simpler,more » closed-form analytical result, the complete packet solution is modeled via approximate amplitude (linear convected kinematic wave initial value problem) and local sinusoidal (wave equation) expressions. Significantly, the initial value for the kinematic wave transport expression follows from a separable variable coefficient approximation to the linearized pressure fluctuation Poisson expression. The resulting amplitude solution, while approximate in nature, nonetheless, appears to mimic many of the global features, e.g. transitional flow intermittency and pressure fluctuation magnitude behavior. A low wave number wave packet models also recover meaningful auto-correlation and low frequency spectral behaviors.« less

Practical Methodology for the Inclusion of Nonlinear Slosh Damping in the Stability Analysis of Liquid-Propelled Space Vehicles

A method is presented that allows for the prediction of the magnitude of limit cycles due to adverse control-slosh interaction in liquid propelled space vehicles using non-linear slosh damping. Such a method is an alternative to the industry practice of assuming linear damping and relying on: mechanical slosh baffles to achieve desired stability margins; accepting minimal slosh stability margins; or time domain non-linear analysis to accept time periods of poor stability. Sinusoidal input describing functional analysis is used to develop a relationship between the non-linear slosh damping and an equivalent linear damping at a given slosh amplitude. In addition, a more accurate analytical prediction of the danger zone for slosh mass locations in a vehicle under proportional and derivative attitude control is presented. This method is used in the control-slosh stability analysis of the NASA Space Launch System.

Direct numerical simulation of axisymmetric laminar low-density jets

The stability of submerged laminar axisymmetric low-density jets has been investigated experimentally (Kyle & Sreenivasan 1993, Hallberg & Strykowski 2006) and with linear analysis (Jendoubi & Strykowski 1994, Coenen & Sevilla 2012, Coenen et al. 2017). These jets become globally unstable when the Reynolds number is larger than a certain critical value which depends on the density ratio and on the velocity profile at the injector outlet. In this work, Direct Numerical Simulations using FreeFEM + + (Hecht 2012) with P1 elements for pressure and P2 for velocity and density are performed to complement the above mentioned studies. Density and velocity fields are analyzed at long time showing the unforced space-time evolution of nonlinear disturbances propagating along the jet. Using the Stuart-Landau model to fit the numerical results for the self-excited oscillations we have computed a neutral stability curve that shows good agreement with experiments and stability theory. Instabilities and Turbulence Generation by Pick-Up Ion Distributions in the Outer Heliosheath

Pick-up ions (PUIs) play a significant role in the dynamics of the heliosphere. One problem that has attracted significant attention is the stability of ring-like distributions of PUIs and the electromagnetic fluctuations that could be generated by PUI distributions. For example, PUI stability is relevant to theories attempting to identify the origins of the IBEX ribbon. PUIs have previously been investigated by linear stability analysis of model (e.g. Gaussian) rings and corresponding computer simulations. The majority of these simulations utilized particle-in-cell methods which suffer from accuracy limitations imposed by the statistical noise associated with representing the plasma by a relatively small number of computational particles. In this work, we utilize highly accurate spectral Vlasov simulations conducted using the fully kinetic implicit code SPS (Spectral Plasma Solver) to investigate the PUI distributions inferred from a global heliospheric model (Heerikhuisen et al., 2016). Results are compared with those obtained by hybrid and fully kinetic particle-in-cell methods.

Non-normality and classification of amplification mechanisms in stability and resolvent analysis

Eigenspectra and pseudospectra of the mean-linearized Navier-Stokes operator are used to characterize amplification mechanisms in laminar and turbulent flows in which linear mechanisms are important. Success of mean flow (linear) stability analysis for a particular frequency is shown to depend on whether two scalar measures of non-normality agree: (1) the product between the resolvent norm and the distance from the imaginary axis to the closest eigenvalue and (2) the inverse of the inner product between the most amplified resolvent forcing and response modes. If they agree, the resolvent operator can be rewritten in its dyadic representation to reveal that the adjoint and forward stability modes are proportional to the forcing and response resolvent modes at that frequency. Hence the real parts of the eigenvalues are important since they are responsible for resonant amplification and the resolvent operator is low rank when the eigenvalues are sufficiently separated in the spectrum. If the amplification is pseudoresonant, then resolvent analysis is more suitable to understand the origin of observed flow structures. Two test cases are studied: low Reynolds number cylinder flow and turbulent channel flow. The first deals mainly with resonant mechanisms, hence the success of both classical and mean stability analysis with respect to predicting the critical Reynolds number and global frequency of the saturated flow. Both scalar measures of non-normality agree for the base and mean flows, and the region where the forcing and response modes overlap scales with the length of the recirculation bubble. In the case of turbulent channel flow, structures result from both resonant and pseudoresonant mechanisms, suggesting that both are necessary elements to sustain turbulence. Mean shear is exploited most efficiently by stationary disturbances while bounds on the pseudospectra illustrate how pseudoresonance is responsible for the most amplified disturbances at spatial wavenumbers and temporal frequencies corresponding to well-known turbulent structures. Some implications for flow control are discussed.

Stabilization of flow past a rounded cylinder

We perform global linear stability analysis on low-Re flow past a rounded cylinder. The cylinder corners are rounded with a radius R, normalized as R+ = R / D where D is the cylinder diameter, and its effect on the flow stability characteristics is investigated. We compute the critical Reynolds number (Recr) for the onset of first instability, and quantify the perturbation growth rate for the super-critical flows. It is found that the flow can be stabilized by partially rounding the cylinder. Compared with the square and circular cylinders, the partially rounded cylinder has a higher Recr , attaining a maximum at around R+ = 0 . 30 , and the perturbation growth rate of the super-critical flows is reduced for Re <= 100 . We perform sensitivity analysis to explore the source of the stabilization. The growth rate sensitivity to base flow modification has two different spatial structures: the growth rate is sensitive to the wake backflow in a large region for square-like cylinders (R+ -> 0 . 00), while only the near-wake backflow is crucial for circular-like cylinders (R+ -> 0 . 50). The stability analysis results are also verified with those of the direct simulations and very good agreement is achieved. Dynamics differentiate between active and inactive inteins

The balance between stability and dynamics for active enzymes can be somewhat quantified by studies of intein splicing and cleaving reactions. Inteins catalyze the ligation of flanking host exteins while excising themselves. The potential for applications led to engineering of a mini-intein splicing domain, where the homing endonuclease domain of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis RecA (Mtu recA) intein was removed. The remaining domains were linked by several short peptides, but splicing activity in all was substantially lower than the full-length intein. Native splicing activity was restored in some cases by a V67L mutation. Using computations and experiments, we examine the impact of this mutation on the stability and conformational dynamics of the mini-intein splicing domain. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to delineate the factors that determine the active state, including the V67L mini-intein mutant, and peptide linker. We found that (1) the V67L mutation lowers the global fluctuations in all modeled mini-inteins, stabilizing the mini-intein constructs; (2) the connecting linker length affects intein dynamics; and (3) the flexibilities of the linker and intein core are higher in the active structure. We have observed that the interaction of the linker region and a turn region around residues 35-41 provides the pathway for the allostery interaction. Our experiments reveal that intein catalysis is characterized by non-linear Arrhenius plot, confirming the significant contribution of protein conformational dynamics to intein function. We conclude that while the V67L mutation stabilizes the global structure, cooperative dynamics of all intein regions appear more important for intein function than high stability. Our studies suggest that effectively quenching the conformational dynamics of an intein through engineered allosteric interactions could deactivate intein splicing or cleaving. PMID:25087201

Asymptotic and spectral analysis of the gyrokinetic-waterbag integro-differential operator in toroidal geometry

Achieving plasmas with good stability and confinement properties is a key research goal for magnetic fusion devices. The underlying equations are the Vlasov-Poisson and Vlasov-Maxwell (VPM) equations in three space variables, three velocity variables, and one time variable. Even in those somewhat academic cases where global equilibrium solutions are known, studying their stability requires the analysis of the spectral properties of the linearized operator, a daunting task. We have identified a model, for which not only equilibrium solutions can be constructed, but many of their stability properties are amenable to rigorous analysis. It uses a class of solution to the VPM equations (or to their gyrokinetic approximations) known as waterbag solutions which, in particular, are piecewise constant in phase-space. It also uses, not only the gyrokinetic approximation of fast cyclotronic motion around magnetic field lines, but also an asymptotic approximation regarding the magnetic-field-induced anisotropy: the spatial variation along the field lines is taken much slower than across them. Together, these assumptions result in a drastic reduction in the dimensionality of the linearized problem, which becomes a set of two nested one-dimensional problems: an integral equation in the poloidal variable, followed by a one-dimensional complex Schrödinger equation in the radial variable. We show here that the operator associated to the poloidal variable is meromorphic in the eigenparameter, the pulsation frequency. We also prove that, for all but a countable set of real pulsation frequencies, the operator is compact and thus behaves mostly as a finite-dimensional one. The numerical algorithms based on such ideas have been implemented in a companion paper [D. Coulette and N. Besse, "Numerical resolution of the global eigenvalue problem for gyrokinetic-waterbag model in toroidal geometry" (submitted)] and were found to be surprisingly close to those for the original gyrokinetic-Vlasov equations. The purpose of the present paper is to make these new ideas accessible to two readerships: applied mathematicians and plasma physicists.

Computerized dynamic posturography: the influence of platform stability on postural control.

Postural stability can be quantified using posturography systems, which allow different foot platform stability settings to be selected. It is unclear, however, how platform stability and postural control are mathematically correlated. Twenty subjects performed tests on the Biodex Stability System at all 13 stability levels. Overall stability index, medial-lateral stability index, and anterior-posterior stability index scores were calculated, and data were analyzed using analysis of variance and linear regression analysis. A decrease in platform stability from the static level to the second least stable level was associated with a linear decrease in postural control. The overall stability index scores were 1.5 ± 0.8 degrees (static), 2.2 ± 0.9 degrees (level 8), and 3.6 ± 1.7 degrees (level 2). The slope of the regression lines was 0.17 for the men and 0.10 for the women. A linear correlation was demonstrated between platform stability and postural control. The influence of stability levels seems to be almost twice as high in men as in women.

Review of Mitigation Costs for Stabilizing Greenhouse Gas Concentrations

Mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions to avoid future climate change comes at a cost, because low-emission technologies are more expensive than GHG-emitting technology options. The increase in mitigation cost is not linearly related to the stabilization level, though: the first emission reductions are relatively cheap, but deeper emission reductions become more expensive. Therefore, emission reduction to medium levels of GHG concentrations , such as 4.5 or 6 W/m2, is considerably cheaper than emission reduction to low levels of GHG concentrations, such as 2.6 or 3.7 W/m2. Moreover, mitigation costs are influenced by many other aspects than the targeted mitigation level alone, such as whether or not certain technologies are available or societally acceptable (Kriegler et al., 2014); the rate of technological progress and cost reduction of low-emission technologies; the level of final energy demand (Riahi et al., 2011), and the level of global cooperation and trade in emission allowances (den Elzen and Höhne, 2010). This paper reviews the existing literature on greenhouse gas mitigation costs. We analyze the available data on mitigation costs and draw conclusions on how these change for different stabilization levels of GHG concentrations. We will take into account the aspects of technology, energy demand, and cooperation in distinguishing differences between scenarios and stabilization levels. Bounded Linear Stability Analysis - A Time Delay Margin Estimation Approach for Adaptive Control

This paper presents a method for estimating time delay margin for model-reference adaptive control of systems with almost linear structured uncertainty. The bounded linear stability analysis method seeks to represent the conventional model-reference adaptive law by a locally bounded linear approximation within a small time window using the comparison lemma. The locally bounded linear approximation of the combined adaptive system is cast in a form of an input-time-delay differential equation over a small time window. The time delay margin of this system represents a local stability measure and is computed analytically by a matrix measure method, which provides a simple analytical technique for estimating an upper bound of time delay margin. Based on simulation results for a scalar model-reference adaptive control system, both the bounded linear stability method and the matrix measure method are seen to provide a reasonably accurate and yet not too conservative time delay margin estimation.

Synchronization control in multiplex networks of nonlinear multi-agent systems

This paper is concerned with synchronization control of a multiplex network, in which two different kinds of relationships among agents coexist. Hybrid coupling, including continuous linear coupling and impulsive coupling, is proposed to model the coexisting distinguishable interactions. First, by adding impulsive controllers on a small portion of agents, local synchronization is analyzed by linearizing the error system at the desired trajectory. Then, global synchronization is studied based on the Lyapunov stability theory, where a time-varying coupling strength is involved. To further deal with the time-varying coupling strength, an adaptive updating law is introduced and a corresponding sufficient condition is obtained to ensure synchronization of the multiplex network towards the desired trajectory. Networks of Chua's circuits and other chaotic systems with double layers of interactions are simulated to verify the proposed method.

A comprehensive investigation of the relation between the Mercier modes and the low-{ital n} modes has been performed. The unstable localized low-{ital n} modes are found to be correlated with the Mercier criterion. Finite growth rates of the low-{ital n} modes correspond to finite values of the Mercier criterion parameter. Near the Mercier marginal stability boundary, the low-{ital n} modes tend to be weakly unstable with very small growth rates. However, the stability of global-type low-{ital n} modes is found to be decorrelated from that of Mercier modes. The low-{ital n} modes with global radial structures can be more stable or more unstable than Mercier modes.« less

Adaptive and nonadaptive feedback control of global instabilities with application to a heated 2-D jet

Close to the onset of self-excited fluid oscillations the generic complex Ginzburg-Landau is proposed as the lowest order model for the plant. Its linear part which provides the stability boundaries is derived from first principles for both doubly-infinite and semi-infinite flow domains. Concentrating on a single global mode, the model is further simplified to the Stuart-Landau equation. For this latter model, a methodology is developed for the design of single-input single-output controllers. The so designed controllers have been implemented on a self-excited, heated two-dimensional jet with one hot wire as sensor and an acoustic speaker as actuator, and are shown to be effective within their limitations in suppressing or enhancing limit-cycle oscillations. Finally, the effect of of a controller designed to suppress the most unstable global mode on other modes is investigated experimentally in the wake of a cylinder at low Reynolds number, where an encouraging semi-quantitative correspondence to the Ginzburg-Landau model is found.

A Navier-Stokes-Based Approach for Mean Flow Perturbation Analysis

The manner in which a basic state, obtained from a time-averaged unsteady flowfield, processes perturbations can provide significant insight into the cause and evolution of instabilities. A widely used approach is based on Parabolized Stability Equations (PSE), which limits streamwise mean flow variation and is often applied to 2-D base flows. To avoid some of these issues, we advance a Navier-Stokes-based method, which can address non-trivial three-dimensional fields. The method stems from that employed by Touber and Sandham (Theor. Comput. Fluid. Dyn., 23, 79, 2009) to analyze global modes in nominally 2-D shock-wave turbulent-boundary layer interactions (STBLI). We first develop its theoretical underpinnings by examining conditions under which it degenerates to traditional methods. We then illustrate the application by considering perturbations to an entropy layer at Mach 6, a turbulent supersonic jet at Mach 1.3 and STBLI at Mach 2.3. For the entropy layer and jet cases, known linear stability and PSE results are successfully reproduced, while global modes are obtained for STBLI. The results not only validate the proposed technique, but also demonstrate its suitability in analyzing instabilities for any general 3D basic state, including impulse response. Sponsored by AFOSR.

LP-stability for the strong solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space

We consider the motion of a viscous fluid filling the whole space R3, governed by the classical Navier-Stokes equations (1). Existence of global (in time) regular solutions for that system of non-linear partial differential equations, is still an open problem. From either the mathematical and the physical point of view, an interesting property is the stability (or not) of the (eventual) global regular solutions. Here, we assume that v1(t,x) is a solution, with initial data a1(x). For small perturbations of a1, we want the solution v1(t,x) being slightly perturbed, too. Due to viscosity, it is even expected that the perturbed solution v2(t,x) approaches the unperturbed one, as time goes to + infinity. This is just the result proved in this paper. To measure the distance between v1(t,x) and v2(t,x), at each time t, suitable norms are introduced (LP-norms). For fluids filling a bounded vessel, exponential decay of the above distance, is expected. Such a strong result is not reasonable, for fluids filling the entire space.

Global stability behaviour for the BEK family of rotating boundary layers

Numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the linear global stability behaviour of the Bödewadt, Ekman, von Kármán (BEK) family of flows, for cases where a disc rotates beneath an incompressible fluid that is also rotating. This extends the work reported in recent studies that only considered the rotating-disc boundary layer with a von Kármán configuration, where the fluid that lies above the boundary layer remains stationary. When a homogeneous flow approximation is made, neglecting the radial variation of the basic state, it can be shown that linearised disturbances are susceptible to absolute instability. We shall demonstrate that, despite this prediction of absolute instability, the disturbance development exhibits globally stable behaviour in the BEK boundary layers with a genuine radial inhomogeneity. For configurations where the disc rotation rate is greater than that of the overlying fluid, disturbances propagate radially outwards and there is only a convective form of instability. This replicates the behaviour that had previously been documented when the fluid did not rotate beyond the boundary layer. However, if the fluid rotation rate is taken to exceed that of the disc, then the propagation direction reverses and disturbances grow while convecting radially inwards. Eventually, as they approach regions of smaller radii, where stability is predicted according to the homogeneous flow approximation, the growth rates reduce until decay takes over. Given sufficient time, such disturbances can begin to diminish at every radial location, even those which are positioned outwards from the radius associated with the onset of absolute instability. This leads to the confinement of the disturbance development within a finitely bounded region of the spatial-temporal plane.

Stability of multiloop LQ regulators with nonlinearities. I - Regions of attraction. II - Regions of ultimate boundedness

An investigation is conducted for the closed loop stability of linear time-invariant systems controlled by linear quadratic (LQ) regulators, in cases where nonlinearities exist in the control channels lying outside the stability sector in regions away from the origin. The estimate of the region of attraction thus obtained furnishes methods for the selection of performance function weights for more robust LQ designs. Attention is then given to the closed loop stability of linear time-invariant systems controlled by the LQ regulators when the nonlinearities in the loops escape the stability sector in a bounded region containing the origin.

Applied Time Domain Stability Margin Assessment for Nonlinear Time-Varying Systems

The baseline stability margins for NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) launch vehicle were generated via the classical approach of linearizing the system equations of motion and determining the gain and phase margins from the resulting frequency domain model. To improve the fidelity of the classical methods, the linear frequency domain approach can be extended by replacing static, memoryless nonlinearities with describing functions. This technique, however, does not address the time varying nature of the dynamics of a launch vehicle in flight. An alternative technique for the evaluation of the stability of the nonlinear launch vehicle dynamics along its trajectory is to incrementally adjust the gain and/or time delay in the time domain simulation until the system exhibits unstable behavior. This technique has the added benefit of providing a direct comparison between the time domain and frequency domain tools in support of simulation validation. This technique was implemented by using the Stability Aerospace Vehicle Analysis Tool (SAVANT) computer simulation to evaluate the stability of the SLS system with the Adaptive Augmenting Control (AAC) active and inactive along its ascent trajectory. The gains for which the vehicle maintains apparent time-domain stability defines the gain margins, and the time delay similarly defines the phase margin. This method of extracting the control stability margins from the time-domain simulation is relatively straightforward and the resultant margins can be compared to the linearized system results. The sections herein describe the techniques employed to extract the time-domain margins, compare the results between these nonlinear and the linear methods, and provide explanations for observed discrepancies. The SLS ascent trajectory was simulated with SAVANT and the classical linear stability margins were evaluated at one second intervals. The linear analysis was performed with the AAC algorithm disabled to attain baseline stability margins. At each time point, the system was linearized about the current operating point using Simulink's built-in solver. Each linearized system in time was evaluated for its rigid-body gain margin (high frequency gain margin), rigid-body phase margin, and aero gain margin (low frequency gain margin) for each control axis. Using the stability margins derived from the baseline linearization approach, the time domain derived stability margins were determined by executing time domain simulations in which axis-specific incremental gain and phase adjustments were made to the nominal system about the expected neutral stability point at specific flight times. The baseline stability margin time histories were used to shift the system gain to various values around the zero margin point such that a precise amount of expected gain margin was maintained throughout flight. When assessing the gain margins, the gain was applied starting at the time point under consideration, thereafter following the variation in the margin found in the linear analysis. When assessing the rigid-body phase margin, a constant time delay was applied to the system starting at the time point under consideration. If the baseline stability margins were correctly determined via the linear analysis, the time domain simulation results should contain unstable behavior at certain gain and phase values. Examples will be shown from repeated simulations with variable added gain and phase lag. Faithfulness of margins calculated from the linear analysis to the nonlinear system will be demonstrated.

During the directional solidification of alloys, solute inhomogeneities transverse to the growth direction arise due to morphological instabilities (leading to cellular or dendritic growth) and/or due to convection in the melt. In the absence of convection, the conditions for the onset of morphological instability are given by the linear stability analysis of Mullins and Sekerka. For ordinary solidification rates, the predictions of linear stability analysis are similar to the constitutional supercooling criterion. However, at very rapid solidification rates, linear stability analysis predicts a vast increase in stabilization in comparison to constitutional supercooling.
