    Eight species of armored spiders belonging to two families, Pacullidae Simon, 1894 and Tetrablemmidae O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1873, are reported from Singapore. Five species are documented as new to science: Paculla bukittimahensis Lin & Li, sp. n. (male and female), Paculla globosa Lin & Li, sp. n. (male and female), Ablemma malacca Lin & Li, sp. n. (male and female), Singaporemma lenachanae Lin & Li, sp. n. (male and female), and Sulaimania brevis Lin & Li, sp. n. (male). The three known species are Brignoliella besutensis Lin, Li & Jäger, 2012, Brignoliella michaeli Lehtinen, 1981, and Singaporemma singulare Shear, 1978, of which the female of Brignoliella besutensis is described for the first time. For comparison, types of Singaporemma adjacens Lehtinen, 1981 from Vietnam, Singaporemma halongense Lehtinen, 1981 from Vietnam, Singaporemma singulare from Singapore and Sulaimania vigelandi Lehtinen, 1981 from Malaysia are studied and photographed.

    The genus Zoica Simon, 1898 comprises the smallest members of the family Lycosidae (Lehtinen & Hippa 1979; Framenau et al. 2009) and all the members are vagrant (Lehtinen & Hippa 1979). The genus was revised by Lehtinen & Hippa (1979) and currently has 12 described species (World Spider Catalog 2017). The species Zoica puellula (Simon, 1898) was based on an unspecified number of female specimens from Sri Lanka, and its original description (Simon 1898) is inadequate and lacks illustrations. The male and female genitalia of this species were subsequently illustrated several times (Roewer 1960; Lehtinen & Hippa 1979; Tikader & Malhotra 1980); however these illustrations are insufficient for proper identification and the internal female genitalia of this species have not been illustrated. Additionally, Tikader and Malhotra (1980) inferred the presence of Z. puellula in India from records of this species in Sri Lanka, but it has not yet been found in India. Here we redescribe Z. puellula based on the type material and newly collected specimens and extend its known geographic distribution to India. We also remove Zoica harduarae (Biswas & Roy, 2008), which was described from India, from the genus.

  5. Anaxibia folia spec. nov.-a new litter-dwelling dictynid spider from India (Araneae: Dictynidae: Dictyninae).

    The dictynid genus Anaxibia Thorell, 1898 currently has six nominal species distributed in the Oriental and Ethiopian regions (World Spider Catalog 2017). The genus represents tiny to small spiders characterised by a reduced cribellum, long, cylindrical anterior and posterior spinnerets, cymbium with caudal modification, palpal patella with dorsal horn, sub-apically arising embolus, conductor with wide lamellar apex and simple female genitalia (Lehtinen 1967). The genus has one representative in India: Anaxibia rebai (Tikader, 1966), originally described under Dictyna Sundevall, 1833 (Tikader 1966; Lehtinen 1967). In this paper, we describe and illustrate a new litter-dwelling Anaxibia species collected from the Kerala state of southern India.

    The Oriental armored spider genus Shearella Lehtinen, 1981 is recorded for the first time from India. Detailed description and illustrations of both sexes of Shearella alii sp. nov. are given. The geographic distribution of the genus is updated. Sinamma sanya (Lin & Li, 2010) is transferred back to Shearella, and Shearella browni (Shear, 1978) back to Monoblemma Gertsch, 1941. A checklist of all Indian tetrablemmid species currently known and a distribution map of all known Shearella spp. are presented.

    Abstract The family Eresidae C. L. Koch, 1850 is reviewed at the genus level. The family comprises nine genera including one new genus. They are: Adonea Simon, 1873, Dorceus C. L. Koch, 1846, Dresserus Simon, 1876, Eresus Walckenaer, 1805, Gandanameno Lehtinen, 1967, Loureedia gen. n., ParadoneaLawrence, 1968, Seothyra Purcell, 1903, and Stegodyphus Simon, 1873. A key to all genera and major lineages is provided along with corresponding diagnoses, as well as descriptions of selected species. These are documented with collections of photographs, scanning electron micrographs, and illustrations. A new phylogeny of Eresidae based on molecular sequence data expands on a previously published analysis. A species of the genus Paradonea Lawrence, 1968 is sequenced and placed phylogenetically for the first time. New sequences from twenty Gandanameno Lehtinen, 1967 specimens were added to investigate species limits within the genus. The genus Loureedia gen. n. is proposed to accommodate Eresus annulipes Lucas, 1857. Two species, Eresus semicanus Simon, 1908 and Eresus jerbae El-Hennawy, 2005, are synonymized with Loureedia annulipes comb. n. One new species, Paradonea presleyi sp. n. is described. Eresus algericus El-Hennawy, 2004 is transferred to Adonea Simon, 1873. The female of Dorceus fastuosus C. L. Koch, 1846 is described for the first time.   13. Effects of thunderstorm-driven runaway electrons in the conjugate hemisphere: Purple sprites, ionization enhancements, and gamma rays

    The presence of energetic runaway electron beams above thunderstorms is suggested by observations of terrestrial gamma ray flashes [Fishman et al., 1994], as well as by theoretical work [Roussel-Dupré and Gurevich, 1996; Lehtinen et al., 1999], although such beams have not been directly measured. In this paper we consider possible measurable effects of such beams in the conjugate hemisphere as a means to confirm their existence and quantify their properties. High-density relativistic runaway electron beams, driven upward by intense lightning-generated mesospheric quasi-static electric fields, have been predicted [Lehtinen et al., 2000] to be isotropized and thermalized during their interhemispherical traverse along the Earth's magnetic field lines so that only ~10% of the electrons which are below the loss cone should arrive at the geomagnetically conjugate ionosphere. As they encounter the Earth's atmosphere, the energetic electrons would be scattered and produce light and ionization, much like a beam of precipitating auroral electrons. A Monte Carlo approach is used to model the interaction of the downgoing electrons with the conjugate atmosphere, including the backscattering of electrons, as well as production of optical and gamma ray emissions and enhanced secondary ionization. Results indicate that these conjugate ionospheric effects of the runaway electron beam are detectable and thus may be used to quantify the runaway electron mechanism.

    A new genus and five new species belonging to the family Tetrablemmidae are described from caves in Southwest China, i.e., Sinammaoxycera gen. & sp. n., Singaporemma banxiaoensis sp. n., Singaporemma wulongensis sp. n., Tetrablemma ziyaoensis sp. n. andTetrablemma menglaensis sp. n. The following new combination is proposed: Sinamma sanya (Lin & Li, 2010), comb. n. ex. Shearella Lehtinen, 1981. The relationships of the Sinamma gen. n. with other genera are discussed. Diagnoses and illustrations for all new taxa are given.

  16. A new genus of nesticid spiders from western European Peninsulas (Araneae, Nesticidae).

    This paper describes a new genus of Nesticidae based on morphology of the genital characters and supported by molecular data. The new genus, Domitius n. gen., includes a group of seven cave-dweller species spread along western European peninsulas (Iberian and Italian). Molecular phylogenetic analysis shows that these species constitute an independent and highly supported evolutionary lineage being the sister group to Kryptonesticus Pavlek Ribera, 2017, Nesticus Thorell, 1869 and Carpathonesticus Lehtinen Saaristo, 1980 genera. As a result, seven new combinations are here proposed: Domitius baeticus (López-Pancorbo Ribera, 2011) n. comb., Domitius murgis (Ribera De Mas, 2003) n. comb., Domitius lusitanicus (Fage, 1931) n. comb., Domitius luquei (Ribera Guerao, 1995) n. comb., Domitius sbordonii (Brignoli, 1979) n. comb., Domitius menozzii (Caporiacco, 1934) n. comb., Domitius speluncarum (Pavesi, 1873) n. comb.

  17. Asteroid orbital error analysis: Theory and application

    We present a rigorous Bayesian theory for asteroid orbital error estimation in which the probability density of the orbital elements is derived from the noise statistics of the observations. For Gaussian noise in a linearized approximation the probability density is also Gaussian, and the errors of the orbital elements at a given epoch are fully described by the covariance matrix. The law of error propagation can then be applied to calculate past and future positional uncertainty ellipsoids (Cappellari et al. 1976, Yeomans et al. 1987, Whipple et al. 1991). To our knowledge, this is the first time a Bayesian approach has been formulated for orbital element estimation. In contrast to the classical Fisherian school of statistics, the Bayesian school allows a priori information to be formally present in the final estimation. However, Bayesian estimation does give the same results as Fisherian estimation when no priori information is assumed (Lehtinen 1988, and reference therein).

  18. How do soil quality indicators (SOC and nutrients) change with long-term different crop residue management?

    Leaving the crop residues (cereal grain straw, maize stover, sugar beet leaves) on the field may enhance SOC and soil nutrient contents (e.g. P, K, Mg). In contrast, harvesting crop residues for livestock bedding or energy production are often connected with a loss of soil fertility (Lehtinen et al., 2014). We have evaluated the effects of different management of crop residues on selected soil parameters of the upper soil (0-25 cm) in two long-term field experiments in Austria focused on P-dynamics (Marchfeld, since 1982 and Alpenvorland, since 1986). In four P-fertilisation stages (0, 75, 150, 300 kg P2O5 ha-1y-1) all crop residues were incorporated in one treatment and all removed in the other one, respectively. The results show that the effects are different at the two investigated sites. At the site Marchfeld, a medium textured soil, on average SOC was significantly higher with the incorporation of crop residues (21.6 g kg-1) compared to the removal (19.9 g kg-1) after 32 years. In the long run, SOC levels could be maintained, if crop residues remained at the field, whereas the constant removal of crop residues resulted in a SOC decline. At the site Alpenvorland, SOC was only slightly higher with the incorporation of the crop residues after 28 years. In this case, in the long run, even with this management practice and, moreover, with the residue removal, SOC tended to decrease generally. At the Marchfeld, crop residue incorporation resulted in a significant increase of "plant available" phosphorus (P-CAL) only with very high P fertilization. However, "plant available" Mg (according to Schachtschabel) and potassium (K-CAL) were significantly higher in all P fertilisation stages compared to the residue removal treatments. At the site Alpenvorland, the soils are rich in silt and clay and with long-term incorporation of crop residues a significant increase only of „plant available" K of about 50% occurred.   19. Analysis and Modeling of Intense Oceanic Lightning

    Recent studies using lightning data from geo-location networks such as GLD360 suggest that lightning strokes are more intense over the ocean than over land, even though they are less common [Said et al. 2013]. We present an investigation of the physical differences between oceanic and land lightning. We have deployed a sensitive Low Frequency (1 MHz sampling rate) radio receiver system aboard the NOAA Ronald W. Brown research vessel and have collected thousands of lightning waveforms close to deep oceanic lightning. We analyze the captured waveforms, describe our modeling efforts, and summarize our findings. We model the ground wave (gw) portion of the lightning sferics using a numerical method built on top of the Stanford Full Wave Method (FWM) [Lehtinen and Inan 2008]. The gwFWM technique accounts for propagation over a curved Earth with finite conductivity, and is used to simulate an arbitrary current profile along the lightning channel. We conduct a sensitivity analysis and study the current profiles for land and for oceanic lightning. We find that the effect of ground conductivity is minimal, and that stronger oceanic radio intensity does not result from shorter current rise-time or from faster return stroke propagation speed.

  20. X-ray Production in a Laboratory Streamer Discharge

    A 1D model of a 1-m scale laboratory discharge streamer system [Lehtinen et al, 2016, http://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2016/EGU2016-6180.pdf] has reproduced the experimentally-observed [Kochkin et al, 2014, doi:10.1088/0022-3727/47/14/145203] detached streamer systems (pilots). The pilots grow in both directions and thus produce counter-streamers which collide with forward-moving streamers, a mechanism which was proposed to lead to the production of x-rays [Cooray, 2009, doi:10.1016/j.jastp.2009.07.010]. However, the 1D model is insufficient to analyse this process because in this model the electric field between the colliding streamers is averaged in the transverse direction and therefore the maximum fields are underestimated. In this presentation, we include the microscopic processes in the modeling of streamer propagation in order to calculate accurately the electric field enhancement between colliding streamers of opposite polarity. We evaluate the temporal and spatial characteristics of the enhanced electric field, which define the production of relativistic runaway electrons and x-rays. The x-ray output for the conditions occuring in a laboratory discharge is compared to the experimental data [Kochkin et al, 2012, doi:10.1088/0022-3727/45/42/425202; 2015, doi:10.1088/0022-3727/48/2/025205]. We note that the previous modeling of streamer collisions [Ihaddadene and Celestin, 2015, doi:10.1002/2015GL064623] obtained the field enhancements which are insufficient for the observed x-ray production.

  1. Modeling geomagnetic induced currents in Australian power networks

    Geomagnetic induced currents (GICs) have been considered an issue for high-latitude power networks for some decades. More recently, GICs have been observed and studied in power networks located in lower latitude regions. This paper presents the results of a model aimed at predicting and understanding the impact of geomagnetic storms on power networks in Australia, with particular focus on the Queensland and Tasmanian networks. The model incorporates a "geoelectric field" determined using a plane wave magnetic field incident on a uniform conducting Earth, and the network model developed by Lehtinen and Pirjola (1985). Model results for two intense geomagnetic storms of solar cycle 24 are compared with transformer neutral monitors at three locations within the Queensland network and one location within the Tasmanian network. The model is then used to assess the impacts of the superintense geomagnetic storm of 29-31 October 2003 on the flow of GICs within these networks. The model results show good correlation with the observations with coefficients ranging from 0.73 to 0.96 across the observing sites. For Queensland, modeled GIC magnitudes during the superstorm of 29-31 October 2003 exceed 40 A with the larger GICs occurring in the south-east section of the network. Modeled GICs in Tasmania for the same storm do not exceed 30 A. The larger distance spans and general east-west alignment of the southern section of the Queensland network, in conjunction with some relatively low branch resistance values, result in larger modeled GICs despite Queensland being a lower latitude network than Tasmania.

    Observable patterns of cultural variation are consistently intertwined with demic movements, cultural diffusion, and adaptation to different ecological contexts [Cavalli-Sforza and Feldman (1981) Cultural Transmission and Evolution: A Quantitative Approach; Boyd and Richerson (1985) Culture and the Evolutionary Process]. The quantitative study of gene–culture coevolution has focused in particular on the mechanisms responsible for change in frequency and attributes of cultural traits, the spread of cultural information through demic and cultural diffusion, and detecting relationships between genetic and cultural lineages. Here, we make use of worldwide whole-genome sequences [Pagani et al. (2016) Nature 538:238–242] to assess the impact of processes involving population movement and replacement on cultural diversity, focusing on the variability observed in folktale traditions (n = 596) [Uther (2004) The Types of International Folktales: A Classification and Bibliography. Based on the System of Antti Aarne and Stith Thompson] in Eurasia. We find that a model of cultural diffusion predicted by isolation-by-distance alone is not sufficient to explain the observed patterns, especially at small spatial scales (up to ∼4,000 km). We also provide an empirical approach to infer presence and impact of ethnolinguistic barriers preventing the unbiased transmission of both genetic and cultural information. After correcting for the effect of ethnolinguistic boundaries, we show that, of the alternative models that we propose, the one entailing cultural diffusion biased by linguistic differences is the most plausible. Additionally, we identify 15 tales that are more likely to be predominantly transmitted through population movement and replacement and locate putative focal areas for a set of tales that are spread worldwide. The quantitative study of gene-culture coevolution has focused in particular on the mechanisms responsible for change in frequency and attributes of cultural traits, the spread of cultural information through demic and cultural diffusion, and detecting relationships between genetic and cultural lineages. Here, we make use of worldwide whole-genome sequences [Pagani et al. (2016) Nature 538:238-242] to assess the impact of processes involving population movement and replacement on cultural diversity, focusing on the variability observed in folktale traditions ( n  = 596) [Uther (2004) The Types of International Folktales: A Classification and Bibliography. Based on the System of Antti Aarne and Stith Thompson ] in Eurasia. We find that a model of cultural diffusion predicted by isolation-by-distance alone is not sufficient to explain the observed patterns, especially at small spatial scales (up to [Formula: see text]4,000 km). We also provide an empirical approach to infer presence and impact of ethnolinguistic barriers preventing the unbiased transmission of both genetic and cultural information. After correcting for the effect of ethnolinguistic boundaries, we show that, of the alternative models that we propose, the one entailing cultural diffusion biased by linguistic differences is the most plausible. Additionally, we identify 15 tales that are more likely to be predominantly transmitted through population movement and replacement and locate putative focal areas for a set of tales that are spread worldwide.

  4. Irradiation-induced phenomena in carbon nanomaterials

    The irradiation of solids with energetic particles such as electrons or ions is associated with disorder, normally an undesirable phenomenon. However, recent experiments [for an overview, see A.V Krasheninnikov, F. Banhart, Nature Materials, 6 (2007) 723] on bombardment of carbon nanostructures with energetic particles demonstrate that irradiation can have beneficial effects and that electron or ion beams may serve as tools to change the morphology and tailor mechanical, electronic and even magnetic properties of nanostructured carbon systems. We systematically study irradiation effects in carbon nanotubes and other forms of nano-structured carbon experimentally and theoretically by employing various atomistic models ranging from empirical potentials to time-dependent density functional theory. In my presentation, I will briefly review the recent progress in our understanding of ion-irradiation-induced phenomena in nano-structured carbon and present our recent theoretical [A.V Krasheninnikov, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 99 (2007) 016104, A. Tolvanen et al, Appl. Phys. Lett. 91 (2007) 173109.] and experimental [O. Lehtinen et al., to be published] results. I dwell on the ``beneficial'' role of defects and impurities in nanotubes and related systems. Finally, I will present the results of simulations of irradiation-induced pressure build-up inside nanotubes encapsulated with metals [L. Sun, et al., Science 312 (2006) 1199]. Electron irradiation of such composite systems in the transmission electron microscope gives rise to contraction of nanotube shells and thus to high pressure. The irradiation-stimulated pressure can be as high as 40 GPa, which makes it possible to study phase transformations at the nanoscale with high spatial resolution. I will also address the mechanisms of plastic deformation of small metal particles inside carbon shells at high temperatures, which may be important for understanding catalytic growth of carbon nanotubes.

    The 7th EEIGM Conference on Advanced Materials Research (AMR 2013) was held at Luleå University of Technology on the 21-22 March 2013 in Luleå, SWEDEN. This conference is intended as a meeting place for researchers involved in the EEIGM programme, in the 'Erasmus Mundus' Advanced Materials Science and Engineering Master programme (AMASE) and the 'Erasmus Mundus' Doctoral Programme in Materials Science and Engineering (DocMASE). This is great opportunity to present their on-going research in the various fields of Materials Science and Engineering, exchange ideas, strengthen co-operation as well as establish new contacts. More than 60 participants representing six countries attended the meeting, in total 26 oral talks and 19 posters were presented during two days. This issue of IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering presents a selection of articles from EEIGM-7 conference. Following tradition from previous EEIGM conferences, it represents the interdisciplinary nature of Materials Science and Engineering.   7. Infrared Halo Frames a Newborn Star

    Summary: Observations with the VLT of a star-forming cloud have revealed, for the first time, a ring of infrared light around a nascent star. The images also show the presence of jets that emanate from the young object and collide with the surrounding cloud. ESO PR Photo 26a/03 ESO PR Photo 26a/03 [Preview - JPEG: 974 x 400 pix - 404k [Normal - JPEG: 1947 x 800 pix - 1M] The DC303.8-14.2 globule A small and dark interstellar cloud with the rather cryptic name of DC303.8-14.2 is located in the inner part of the Milky Way galaxy. It is seen in the southern constellation Chamaeleon and consists of dust and gas. Astronomers classify it as a typical example of a "globule". As many other globules, this cloud is also giving birth to a star. Some years ago, observations in the infrared spectral region with the ESA IRAS satellite observatory detected the signature of a nascent star at its centre. Subsequent observations with the Swedish ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST) at La Silla (Chile) were carried out by Finnish astronomer Kimmo Lehtinen . He revealed that DC303.8-14.2 is collapsing under its own gravity, a process which will ultimately result in the birth of a new star from the gas and dust in this cloud. Additional SEST observations of the millimetre emission of carbon monoxide (CO) molecules demonstrated a strong outflow from the nascent star. A small part of the gas that falls inward onto the central object is re-injected into the surrounding via this outward-bound "bipolar stream" .   8. Effects of Small Electrostatic Fields on the Ionospheric Density Profile

    It is well known that short-lived strong electric fields produced by natural lightning activities in tropospheric altitudes can significantly affect the upper atmosphere. This effect is directly evidenced by the production of transient luminous events (TLEs), such as sprites, jets, and elves. It has also been demonstrated that thunderstorms can modify ionospheric densities on a longer time scale, during which TLEs may or may not occur [e.g., Cheng and Cummer, GRL, 32, L08804, 2005; Han and Cummer, JGR, 115, A09323, 2010; Shao et al., Nat. Geosci., doi: 10.1038/NGEO1668, 2012]. In particular, according to Shao et al. [2012], the electron density at 75-80 km altitudes may be reduced by about 2-3 orders of magnitude. In this talk, we study the modification of the ionospheric density profile by small electrostatic fields that may exist in the upper atmosphere during a thunderstorm. A simplified ion chemistry model described by Liu [JGR, 117, A03308, 2012] has been used to conduct this study. The model is based on the one developed by Lehtinen and Inan [GRL, 34, L08804, 2007], which is in turn an improved version of the GPI model discussed in Glukhov et al. [JGR, 97, 16971, 1992]. According to this model, the charged particles can be grouped into five species: electrons, light negative ions, cluster negative ions, light positive ions, and cluster positive ions. In this chemistry model, the three-body electron attachment is the only process whose rate constant depends on the electric field, when it is below about one third of the conventional breakdown threshold field. We have compared various sources of the three-body attachment rate constant. The result shows that the rate constant increases linearly with the reduced electric field in the range of 0 to 0.1 Td, while decreases exponentially from 0.1 Td to about one third of the conventional breakdown threshold field. This is a hot topic as in the past year many works have clarified the nanoscale phase separation in electron-doped chalcogenides, showing the key role of a complex texture of nanograins and opening new avenues for the fundamental understanding of quantum phenomena in networks of superconducting nanograins. The advances in nanotechnology allow the exploration of the possible existence of superconductivity in single carbon nanotubes [5]. The technological applications presented by Gomez [6] and Lehtinen [7] show the fundamental physics of superconductivity at the nanoscale to promote new advances in quantum devices. We hope that this combination will make these focus papers in Superconductor Science and Technology interesting and promote cross-fertilization among the different sub-branches of the field which all share the same goal of addressing the key questions on nanoscale superconductors. Types of Nesticella odonta (Chen, 1984), Nesticella songi Chen & Zhu, 2004 and Nesticella yui Wunderlich & Song, 1995 are re-examined and photographed.   13. Multiple ion species fluid modeling of sprite halos and the role of electron detachment from O- in their dynamics

    Sprite halos are brief descending glows appearing at the lower ionosphere boundary, which follow impulsive cloud-to-ground lightning discharges [e.g., Barrington-Leigh et al., JGR, 106, 1741, 2001, Wescott et al., JGR, 106, 10467, 2001; Pasko, JGR, 115, A00E35, 2010]. They last for a few milliseconds, with horizontal extension of tens of kilometers and vertical thickness of several kilometers. According to global survey of the occurrence of transient luminous events by the ISUAL instruments on the FORMOSAT-2 satellite, on average sprite halos occur once every minute on Earth [Chen et al., JGR, 113, A08306, 2008]. It has been established that sprite halos are caused by electron heating, and molecule excitation and ionization in the lower ionosphere due to lightning quasi-electrostatic field [e.g., Pasko et al., JGR, 102, 4529, 1997; Barrington-Leigh et al., 2001; Pasko, 2010]. Past modeling work on sprite halos was conducted using either a two dimensional (2D) model of at most three charged species or a zero dimensional model of multiple ion species. In this talk, we report a modeling study of sprite halos using a recently developed 2D fluid model of multiple charged species. The model charged species include the ion species set used in [Lehtinen and Inan, GRL, 34, L08804, 2007] to study the dynamics of ionization perturbations produced by gigantic jets in the middle and upper atmosphere. In addition, another charged species, O-, is added to this set, because electron detachment of O- can proceed very fast under moderate electric field [Rayment and Moruzzi, Int. J. Mass Spectrom., 26, 321, 1978], requiring a separate treatment from the other light negative ions. The modeling results of a sprite halo driven by positive cloud-to-ground lightning indicate that the halo can descend to lower altitude with much higher electron density behind its front when the O- detachment process is included.     represented only a very small mass fraction of the factors. There is indication that some factors grow at the cost of the other suggesting a set of successive generations of oxidation products. This conversion could proceed either by direct condensed phase processes or by an evaporation-oxidation-recondensation mechanism. On the other hand it seems that the factors evolve in parallel, representing products of multiple oxidation which appear on different time scales in the particulate phase.     between the satellite measurements and radio recordings of TGFs. Distances from the analyzed TGF sources to the Duke VLF receiver range from 2000 to 4000 km. This involves the consideration of the propagation effects in the Earth-ionosphere wave guide (EIWG). The EIWG transfer function was calculated for each event using the full wave propagation method. Thus, the modeled energy spectrum of the TGF source current moment can be transformed into how it would look like for the Duke VLF receiver. Comparative analysis of the energy spectra of modeled TGF radio emission and associated VLF sferics for 20 events with WWLLN confirmed location and 15 events without WWLLN detection shows that 31 of these 35 events exhibit a good fit between the modeled and observed spectra, with only 4 exceptions, that look inconsistent with the proposed model. The second cutoff frequency fB with the number of avalanches Np define the shape of the observed energy spectrum of the sferic emitted by a TGF. Multiplicity of the TGF serves as another important discriminative factor that shows the consistency between the modeled and observed spectra. The results show that the number of avalanches Np should be relatively small, of the order of 30-300, to make the modeled TGF radio emission consistent with the observed VLF sferics. These small values of Np give an argument in favor of the leader model of the TGF production, and also might refer to streamers in the streamer zone of the leader tip, as candidates, producing initial seeding pulses that develop into RREAs, generating a TGF. The 17th Central European Workshop on Quantum Optics will be held in 2010 in St Andrews, UK. It will be chaired by Professors Ulf Leonhardt and Natalia Korolkova from the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of St Andrews. St Andrews is home to the first university of Scotland, the third-oldest in the English-speaking world, and is the home of golf. It remains a charming, eccentric seaside town that is sufficiently secluded - the ideal place for a stimulating and thought-provoking conference.

Finally, in 2005, Stig Stenholm retired, although he is still active, writing papers, taking part in conferences and making research visits. We honoured his 70th birthday at the CEWQO2009 conference, and hope that the future provides us with further opportunities for such events. Looking at the obituary of Dirk ter Haar, I see that his style with students reminds me of Stig's approach. In my opinion, Stig expects independence and initiative from a student, giving perhaps a broad topic in which the student is expected to find his or her own way, whilst working perhaps with a postdoc. Juha Javanainen has talked about the 'sink or swim' style (not referring to Stig, though). There is a famous series of children's books about Moomin trolls by Tove Jansson (another Swedish-speaking Finn like Stig). In one of them, the Moomin find in early spring a small flower in a patch of land uncovered by snow, pushing its way up. In its turn, in its general setting the problem of strain and piezoelectric potential calculation requires the solution of a nonlinear system of partial differential equation. A large experience in solving these two parts of the problem separately, independently of each other, has been already accumulated in the distinct communities of the researchers. This BIRS workshop effectively combined expertise of these research communities, summarized the state-of-the-art for modeling LDSNs and key challenges facing these communities, and explored ways to address those challenges in interdisciplinary team settings. The workshop brought together researchers working on different aspects of the analysis and modeling of LDSNs which require a concerted efforts of teams of researchers with close interactions between applied and pure mathematicians, physicists (theoreticians and experimentalists), computational scientists, and engineers. These scientific and engineering communities were represented in Banff by the researchers from Japan, Canada, the USA, Russia, France, Denmark, Germany, and the UK (further details can be found at http://www.m2netlab.wlu.ca/ldsn-banff/). We had four main plenary talks of one hour duration that gave state-of-the-art overviews of the subject from perspectives of applied mathematics (Professor Russel Caflisch of the University of California at Los Angeles), physics (Professor Antti-Pekka Jauho of the Danish Technical University), and computational science and engineering communities (Professor Gerhard Klimeck of Purdue University), as well as from a point of view of experimentalists (Dr Gail Brown of the Materials Lab/Air Force Research Lab at Wright-Patterson AFB). These talks helped identify the areas where joint efforts needed to be directed to, and they set up the scene for further work during the workshop, including discussions at the workshop open problem sessions.
