  1. Learning progressions from a sociocultural perspective: response to "co-constructing cultural landscapes for disciplinary learning in and out of school: the next generation science standards and learning progressions in action"

    This article discusses a case for a different, socio-cultural way of looking at learning progressions as treated in the next generation science standards (NGSS) as described by Ralph Cordova and Phyllis Balcerzak's paper "Co-constructing cultural landscapes for disciplinary learning in and out of school: the next generation science standards and learning progressions in action". The paper is interesting for a number of reasons, and in this response I will identify different aspects of the paper and link the points made to my own research, and that of colleagues, as complementary perspectives. First, the way that the science curriculum is conceived as an expanding experience that moves from the classroom into the community, across subjects, and across time, links to theoretical positions on disciplinary literacies and notions of learning as apprenticeship into the discursive tools, or `habits of mind' as the authors put it, that underpin disciplinary practice. Second, the formulation of progression through widening communities of practice is a strong feature of the paper, and shows how children take on the role of scientists through this expanding exposure. I will link this approach to some of our own work with school—community science partnerships, drawing on the construct of boundary crossing to tease out relations between school science and professional practice. Third, the demonstration of the expansion of the children's view of what scientists do is well documented in the paper, illustrated by Figure 13 for instance. However I will, in this response, try to draw out and respond to what the paper is saying about the nature of progression; what the progression consists of, over what temporal or spatial dimensions it progresses, and how it can productively frame curriculum processes.

  3. Superconductivity and Magnetism in LaO1-xFxFeAs

    Measuring ^75As, ^139La, and ^57Fe Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) as well as μSR, transport and thermodynamic properties we have determined the phase diagram of LaO1-xFxAsFe superconductors [1-6]. In my talk, I will show experimental studies of the magnetic ordering [2, 5], properties of the superconducting state [1, 3, 5] and the normal state properties [1, 4, 6] in the superconducting regions of the phase diagram. While the temperature dependence of the London penetration as determined from μSR points to an isotropic s wave state [3], our early NMR data suggest singlet pairing and nodes of the order parameter [1]. Extending the NMR work to lower temperatures we find evidence for a deviation of the T^3 behaviour of the spin lattice relaxation, which would agree with the extended s-wave symmetry suggested in recent theoretical work. In the paramagnetic normal state, NMR on all three nuclei shows that the local electronic susceptibility rises with increasing temperature. This had led to suggest the presence of a pseudogap, which I will discuss in detail. The scaling of all NMR shifts with respect to the macroscopic susceptibility indicates that there is no apparent multiband effect through preferential hyperfine couplings. Relaxation measurements indicate a similar temperature-dependence for (T1T)-1, and suggest that the dynamical susceptibility changes uniformly in q space with varying temperature. The transport properties show some striking similarities to the findings in cuprates [6] and, finally, susceptibility [4] as well as NMR studies point to the antiferromagnetic fluctuations, whose relevance is also discussed in many theoretical models of the superconducting pairing mechanism.     improve trust. The clinical teams studied had not themselves formally evaluated the impact of their intervention. Staff time is the main cost driver, but offsetting savings are likely elsewhere in the health service. Risks include increased dependence on clinicians, inadvertent disclosure of confidential information, and communication failures, which are mostly mitigated by young people and clinicians using common-sense approaches. As NHS policy prompts more widespread use of digital communication to improve the health care experience, our findings suggest that benefit is most likely, and harms are mitigated, when digital communication is used with patients who already have a relationship of trust with the clinical team, and where there is identifiable need for patients to have flexible access, such as when transitioning between services, treatments, or lived context. The above article from the Journal of Neurochemistry published on 14 February 2016 on Wiley Online Library ( www.onlinelibrary.com), and in Volume 136, pp. 958-970, is being retracted by agreement between the corresponding author Agnieszka Basta-Kaim, the Journal's Editor-in-Chief Jörg Schulz, and John Wiley & Sons Ltd. The Editorial Office was alerted by a science journalist that the same Western Blot lane had been used to represent two different proteins. The Western Blot signal of iNOS in Fig. 4a was supposedly identical to the Western Blot signal of phospho-JNK in Fig. 6b. The corresponding author stated that "on the final step of figure 6 preparation the first author made, by mistake, an incorrect attachment of representative p-JNK blots." A corrected Fig. 6b is enclosed below. The second concern reaching the Editorial Office was that the same Western Blot signal appeared to have been used to represent two different experimental conditions: the iNOS control signal (-/- LPS/TIA Fig. 4a) appears as a horizontal and vertical mirror image of the last signal in this line (+/10 LPS/TIA Fig. 4a). The raw membrane which was used to produce Fig. 4a is enclosed on the next page and highlights the steps that were undertaken during figure preparation. Although the initial concern was not proven, concerns remained regarding the question how an inadvertent flipping of the first Western blot lane could happen.     Microparticles in Stokes Flows - Symposium in Honor of Françcois Feuillebois' 65th Birthday was held from 21-24 August 2011 in Warsaw, Poland. There were 43 participants from Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Tunisia, United Kingdom and the USA. They presented 5 invited lectures, 25 contributed talks and 9 posters. The abstracts can be found at microparticles2011.ippt.pan.pl. The subjects were divided into three parts and 13 sessions, listed below. Part I. A variety of particles. Sessions: sedimentation at non-Brownian time scale, Brownian and hydrodynamic interactions of non-spherical particles, active particles, permeable particles, deformable particles and biosystems. Part II. Particles and interfaces. Sessions: confined multiparticle systems, hydrodynamic interactions in confined systems, single particle under confinement, particle-interface interactions, slip at interfaces, slip in suspensions. Part III. Stokes flows and beyond. Sessions: inertial effects, texture and self-assembly. At the end of each session, presentations were followed by extensive discussions (two thirds of the presentation time). Also, two round-table general discussions took place, Methods of solving the Stokes equations - which when? and Challenges in microhydrodynamics. This volume contains both original contributions and reviews. There were at least two referees per paper: one participating in the conference, and the other not. I would like to thank all the referees for their work, the Polish Academy of Sciences, Centre national de la recherche scientifique and the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences for supporting in part the conference, Anna Myłyk, Agnieszka Słowicka and Krzysztof Zembrzycki for the weeks spent organizing the symposium, and all the conference participants for their presentations and discussions of the highest scientific quality.   7. Obituary: Bohdan Paczynski, 1940-2007

    to conventional wisdom and implied that the energy released in gamma-ray bursts greatly exceeded the energy released in optical light in supernova explosions. Many high-energy astrophysicists found Paczynski's proposal absurd; however, Paczynski emphasized that the astronomical evidence all pointed towards these powerful explosions coming from outside our Galaxy. With improved data from a new generation of high-energy satellites, observers were able to confirm the extragalactic nature of gamma-ray bursts. Paczynski's heresy has become our firmly established understanding. The astronomy community recognized Bohdan Paczynski with many honors and awards. The American Astronomical Society awarded him the Heinemann Prize and its highest honor, the Russell Prize in 2006. The Royal Astronomical Society recognized his contributions with the Eddington Medal (1987), the George Darwin Lectureship (1996), and its Gold Medal (1999). He won the Astronomical Society of Pacific's Bruce Gold Medal (2002). He was a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and a foreign member of both the National Academy of Sciences and the Royal Academy of Sciences. Diagnosed three years ago with inoperable brain cancer, Paczynski bravely fought on and continued his intellectual activities. With his life prolonged by an experimental treatment, he spent his valuable time with his family, his students, and his colleagues. He continued to be a regular presence at department coffee, where he offered wise and witty insights into a wide range of topics in astrophysics. Paczynski is survived by his wife, Hanka, his daughter, Agnieszka, his son, Martin, and a grandchild. Paczynski was generous with his time and his thoughts, and colleagues and students sought his scientific insight and personal wisdom. His good spirits during his final struggle was an inspiration to all around him. His conduct as a scientist and as a human being was distinguished by unfailing politeness, good sense, and personal integrity. I
