    The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is a major part of the neuroendocrine system in animal responses to stress. It is known that the HPA axis is attenuated at parturition to prevent detrimental effects of glucocorticoid secretion including inhibition of lactation and maternal responsiveness. Luman/CREB3 recruitment factor (LRF) was identified as a negative regulator of CREB3 which is involved in the endoplasmic reticulum stress response. Here, we report a LRF gene knockout mouse line that has a severe maternal behavioral defect. LRF(-/-) females lacked the instinct to tend pups; 80% of their litters died within 24 h, while most pups survived if cross-fostered. Prolactin levels were significantly repressed in lactating LRF(-/-) dams, with glucocorticoid receptor (GR) signaling markedly augmented. In cell culture, LRF repressed transcriptional activity of GR and promoted its protein degradation. LRF was found to colocalize with the known GR repressor, RIP140/NRIP1, which inhibits the activity by GR within specific nuclear punctates that are similar to LRF nuclear bodies. Furthermore, administration of prolactin or the GR antagonist RU486 restored maternal responses in mutant females. We thus postulate that LRF plays a critical role in the attenuation of the HPA axis through repression of glucocorticoid stress signaling during parturition and the postpartum period.

  3. [The forensic medical characteristics of the entrance bullet holes created by the shots from pneumatic rifles].

    The objective of the present study was to compare the injurious action of three types of the bullets for the pneumatic weapons shot from different distances using the Gamo pump air pistol and the BAM B22-1 pneumatic rifle. The following four kinds of the bullets were tested: "the fireball", "Luman cap 0.3", "Luman Field Target 0.68" and "DIABOLO". It was experimentally shown that the injurious action of the bullets fired from the same distance from the pneumatic weapons depends on the type of both the bullet and the weapon, as well as the properties of the target material. Specifically, the action of bullets fired from the piston pneumatic rifle remained stable whereas that of the bullets shot from the gas-balloon air pistol decreased as the gas was exhausted. The studies by the contact-diffusion method have demonstrated that the entrance bullet holes created by the shots from pneumatic weapons are surrounded by dispersed metal particles which makes it possible to estimate the shooting distance. Moreover, the bullets fired from the pneumatic weapons leave the muzzle face imprint on certain target materials.

  4. A 24-year retrospective study of bone growth after implant placement.

    This study quantifies the changes in bone height noted in the body of the edentulous mandibles when the load of the complete denture is born by an RA Ramus Frame Implant (Pacific Implant, Rio Dell, Calif). Eighty-three patients with implants were followed for 3 to 24 years. Pre- and postoperative panoramic films were taken and again at each succeeding 5-year follow-up. The results of the bone changes were gathered retrospectively and calculated. The data revealed a significant increase in bone height from 4.413 to 13 mm and statistically significant P values of <.0003 were determined. The growth of bone appears to be influenced by the design of the posterior feet, dominant chewing side, and a range of extreme atrophy from 5.9 mm to 15 mm. Also, the previously lost anatomical structures appear to repair, such as the luman of the mental foramen and the superior wall over the inferior alveolar canal. All mandibles were loaded postoperatively with an appliance having cutting bars and porcelain teeth or just porcelain teeth in both appliances.

  5. Resolving tectonic, climatic, and geomorphologic signatures in the Eocene Green River Formation, Western U.S

    Tectonic lake basins are windows into the co-evolution of terrestrial climate and topography, but the stratigraphic responses to these drivers are complex and incompletely understood. Coring Quaternary lake basins has provided excellent temporal resolution, but is limited to one-dimensional archives of relatively short duration. Conversely, outcrop-based studies of older deposits can elucidate complex lateral facies relationships and longer time periods, but temporal resolution is often poor due to the lack of marine fossils. However, recent advances in radioisotopic dating have produced highly-resolved records of older lacustrine strata, provided volcanic ash beds are present. The Eocene Green River Formation in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah is such a record, containing numerous 40Ar/39Ar-dated ash horizons with c.a. ±200 ky 2σ uncertainties. At the scale of individual Members of the Green River Formation (100-400 m), lithofacies and faunas differentiate five distinct lake-type intervals: Luman-Scheggs (fluviolacustrine), Rife (saline), Wilkins Peak (hypersaline-alluvial), Lower LaClede (saline), and Upper LaClede (fluviolacustrine). Although published explanations implicate tectonic and/or climatic control of these changes, both lack significant correlation to bulk lithofacies. While stratal geometries imply that the Uinta Mountains were the principle Eocene driver of flexural subsidence for the Greater Green River Basin (GGRB), conglomerate compositions reveal progressive Paleocene through Eocene unroofing rather than a discreet Early Eocene pulse of Laramide tectonism. Similarly, paleofloral evidence for climatic changes is equivocal. Instead, regional provenance and paleoflow patterns suggest that lake-type changes resulted from progressive hydrologic isolation of the GGRB from orogenic highlands to the west, hydrologic closure, then subsequent integration. The resolution of the multispectral image mosaic was then increased to that of the panchromatic image mosaic using the SPARKLE logic, which is described in Davis (2006). Each of the four-band images within the resolution-enhanced image mosaic was individually subjected to a local-area histogram stretch algorithm (described in Davis, 2007), which stretches each band’s picture element based on the digital values of all picture elements within a 315-m radius. The final databases, which are provided in this DS, are three-band, color-composite images of the local-area-enhanced, natural-color data (the blue, green, and red wavelength bands) and color-infrared data (the green, red, and near-infrared wavelength bands). All image data were initially projected and maintained in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) map projection using the target area’s local zone (42 for Zarkashan) and the WGS84 datum. The final image mosaics were subdivided into two overlapping tiles or quadrants because of the large size of the target area. The two image tiles (or quadrants) for the Zarkashan area are provided as embedded geotiff images, which can be read and used by most geographic information system (GIS) and image-processing software. The tiff world files (tfw) are provided, even though they are generally not needed for most software to read an embedded geotiff image. Within the Zarkashan study area, three subareas were designated for detailed field investigations (that is, the Mine Area, Bolo Gold Prospect, and Luman-Tamaki Gold Prospect subareas); these subareas were extracted from the area’s image mosaic and are provided as separate embedded geotiff images.
