Between 1996 and 2005, the Fr ench CLIPPER project team performed numer ical simulations of the Atlantic Ocean over the WO CE year s (1980-2000). Since 2002, the D RAKKA R program ex tends th is framework: intern ational collaboration, global and basin-scale simu lations of the o cean circulation, sea- ice and biogeochemical tracers ov er th e 1950-2000+ period at increased reso lutions with local gr id ref inement capab ilities, improved physics and numerics. Both projects w ere d esigned to str engthen the complementar ity between ocean simulations and observations, for the study of the oceanic variability. This rev iew pap er illustrates the scientific benef its of such synergies as p erformed during the CLIPPER experiment, and as presently done within the DRAKKA R program.
