    Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) and Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) were 2 famous artists who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Both artists represent an additional outstanding example of successful coping with RA in former times when, for the first time, corticosteroids were available, but nevertheless treatment was very limited in the pre-biological era. Dufy was one of the earliest patients with RA who received corticosteroids and regained his creativity to paint for a few additional years, but finally he died of massive intestinal hemorrhages, the adverse event of the combination of corticosteroid plus aspirin. Niki de Saint Phalle, a self-taught French painter and sculptor, was one of the most significant and unconventional female artists of the 20th century. Her eventful life was full of emotional burdens and lifelong lung disease in addition to RA. Niki de Saint Phalle came out from each physical and emotional crisis with new forces and new artistic ideas. Interestingly, it has been suggested that the occupational exposure to colors contributed to the development of RA in artists, which used significantly more bright and clear colors based on toxic heavy metals such as Renoir and Dufy. Moreover, these 2 were cigarette smokers, a recently described risk factor for developing RA and increasing the severity once it does develop. Niki de Saint Phalle produced her sculptures made of plastic material without protection while she assumed that exposition to polyester and toxic fumes of polystyrene caused severe damage to her lungs, resulting in recurrent health problems.

    Raoul Island is a subaerial island volcano approximately 1000 km northeast of New Zealand. Its caldera contains a circumneutral closed-basin volcanic lake and several associated pools, as well as intertidal coastal hot springs, all fed by a hydrothermal system sourced from both meteoric water and seawater. Here, we report on the geochemistry, prokaryotic community diversity, and cultivatable abundance of thermophilic microorganisms of four terrestrial features and one coastal feature on Raoul. Hydrothermal fluid contributions to the volcanic lake and pools make them brackish, and consequently support unusual microbial communities dominated by Planctomycetes, Chloroflexi, Alphaproteobacteria, and Thaumarchaeota, as well as up to 3% of the rare sister phylum to Cyanobacteria, Candidatus Melainabacteria. The dominant taxa are mesophilic to moderately thermophilic, phototrophic, and heterotrophic marine groups related to marine Planctomycetaceae. The coastal hot spring/shallow hydrothermal vent community is similar to other shallow systems in the Western Pacific Ocean, potentially due to proximity and similarities of geochemistry. Although rare in community sequence data, thermophilic methanogens, sulfur-reducers, and iron-reducers are present in culture-based assays.

    The Health On the Net Foundation (HON) was born in 1996, during the beginning of the World Wide Web, from a collective decision by health specialists, led by the late Jean-Raoul Scherrer, who anticipated the need for online trustworthy health information. Because the Internet is a free space that everyone shares, a search for quality information is like a shot in the dark: neither will reliably hit their target. Thus, HON was created to promote deployment of useful and reliable online health information, and to enable its appropriate and efficient use. Two decades on, HON is the oldest and most valued quality marker for online health information. The organization has maintained its reputation through dynamic measures, innovative endeavors and dedication to upholding key values and goals. This paper provides an overview of the HON Foundation, and its activities, challenges, and achievements over the years.

    The beginning of the twentieth century was a time of intensive development of geographical research on tourism, as well as the establishment of tourism research centers in many European countries. The Jagiellonian University School of Tourism played an important role in the development of tourism geography and education, spatial and regional planning, and personnel training for tourism developing in the 1930s in Poland. Tourism education in the school was characterized by a modern curriculum and forms of teaching, including fieldwork, focusing on developing practical skills, and linking research topics with the teaching process. The school conducted extensive research, publishing and documentary activities. The achievements of the Jagiellonian University School of Tourism helped raise awareness in society of the importance of tourism in the socio-economic development of regions and cities. This article presents the history of the Jagiellonian University School of Tourism and highlights its role in the development of tourism research and education in Europe. The school is mentioned among the pioneering centers of tourism, i.e., Robert Glucksmann's Tourism Research Institute at the Berlin School of Commerce, Walter Hunziker's and Kurt Krapf's tourism seminar in St. Gallen, and Raoul Blanchard's Institute of Alpine Geography in Grenoble.

    Species in the genus Gambierdiscus produce ciguatoxins (CTXs) and/or maitotoxins (MTXs), which may cause ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) in humans if contaminated fish are consumed. Species of Gambierdiscus have previously been isolated from macroalgae at Rangitahua (Raoul Island and North Meyer Islands, northern Kermadec Islands), and the opportunity was taken to sample for Gambierdiscus at the more southerly Macauley Island during an expedition in 2016. Gambierdiscus cells were isolated, cultured, and DNA extracted and sequenced to determine the species present. Bulk cultures were tested for CTXs and MTXs by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The species isolated were G. australes , which produced MTX-1 (ranging from 3 to 36 pg/cell), and G. polynesiensis , which produced neither MTX-1 nor, unusually, any known CTXs. Isolates of both species produced putative MTX-3. The risk of fish, particularly herbivorous fish, causing CFP in the Zealandia and Kermadec Islands region is real, although in mainland New Zealand the risk is currently low. Both Gambierdiscus and Fukuyoa have been recorded in the sub-tropical northern region of New Zealand, and so the risk may increase with warming seas and shift in the distribution of Gambierdiscus species.

  14. Art and rheumatology: the artist and the rheumatologist's perspective.

    The reflection of medicine in the universal arts has motivated several rheumatologists to discover features of rheumatic diseases depicted by the artist's eyes long before they were defined as specific pathologic entities. The result has been the identification of several pieces of art dating from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque and Post-Impressionist periods that depict clear features of several rheumatic diseases such as RA, OA, camptodactyly and temporal arteritis, among others. On the other hand, great artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Antoni Gaudí, Raoul Dufy, Paul Klee, Frida Kahlo and Niki de Saint Phalle are good examples of how rheumatic diseases such as RA, scleroderma and chronic pain can influence the artist's perspective, the technique used and the content of their work. Art can serve as a powerful resource to understand the natural course of diseases. By learning through the artist's eyes the way illnesses behave and evolve in time, rheumatologists can trace the history of several conditions. © The Author 2014.     For the initiation of the French journalist Raoul Follereau in 1954 the UNO inaugurated the Leprosy Day (Martyr's Day) that is celebrated on the last Sunday of January every year. Although the bacterium that causes leprosy was isolated by the Norwegian scientist Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen in 1873 and from 1982 this disease can be cured with a special pharmaceutical complex, still 219.826 new leprous are detected on Earth every year, according to the data published in August, 2010 by WHO-experts. Ancient Chinese and Hindu source-strings from 600 B. C. are referring to leprosy, however, the disease was imported by the army of Alexander the Great from India around 327-326 B. C. Even the Old and the New Testament from the Holy Bible are mentioning leprosy in several details. During the Middle Ages the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, established in the Holy Land in 72 A. D., did pioneer work in nursing leprous. In the process of time the medical attendance concerning leprous was organized in special hospitals called "leprosoriums" built on river-banks. Special office and even services were organized for the treatment and isolation of the people infected. Although medical science has prevailed against leprosy, and almost simultaneously even jurisprudence defended the patients' rights via legislation, still mankind can regrettably not get rid of this disease that stigmatizes seriously.

    The European Conference on Radiation and its Effects on Components and Systems (RADECS 2012) was held on September 24-28, 2012, in Biarritz, France. The latest advances in the field of radiation effects on electronic and photonic materials, devices, circuits, sensors, and systems, were presented and discussed. The conference featured a Technical Program, an Industrial Exhibit, and one day meeting on radiation ground effects held on September 24 (RADGROUND). The conference gathered 390 attendees, scientists and engineers from 26 countries, with a high participation of France (101), USA (80), Russia (50), Spain (28), Germany (28), and U.K. (25). Raoul Velazco, from TIMA Labs, was in charge of the Technical Program, assisted by a Technical Program Committee listed below and a pool ofmore than 150 reviewers which contributed maintain the high level of quality reached since many years by the RADECS conferences. The total number of contributions reached 201 and each paper received at least four reviews. There were 145 papers accepted and presented in the Oral Sessions (48), Poster Sessions (69), and Data Workshop (28). The scope of the conference encompassed technological processes and design techniques for producing radiation tolerant systems for space, aeronautical or terrestrial applications, as well as relevant methodologies for their characterization and qualification. The Conference Record, gathering all the papers compliant with IEEE quality standards and editorial rules, is available through the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. The paper candidates and selected for publication in the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON NUCLEAR SCIENCE will be published in this special issue.

  19. Structure and Deformation of the Hikurangi-Kermadec Subduction Zone - Transitions Revealed by Seismic Wide-angle Data

    The Hikurangi-Kermadec subduction zone northeast of New Zealand represents an ideal target to study lateral variations of subduction zone processes. The incoming Pacific plate changes from being a large igneous province, called the Hikurangi Plateau, in the south to normal oceanic plate north of the Rapuhia Scarp. The overriding Australian plate of continental character in the south, forming the North Island of New Zealand, and changes to an island arc in the north. Further lateral variability exists in changes in volcanic and hydro-thermal activity, transitions from accretion to subduction erosion, backarc spreading and rifting, and is accompanied by northward increasing seismicity. As part of the MANGO project (Marine Geoscientific Investigations on the Input and Output of the Kermadec Subduction Zone), four marine geophysical transects of largely seismic reflection and refraction data provide constraints on the upper lithospheric structures across the Hikurangi-Kermadec Trench between 29-38 deg S. On MANGO profile 1 in the south, the initially shallow subduction of the incoming plateau coincides with crustal underplating beneath the East Cape ridge. To the west lies the 100 km wide and over 10 km deep Raukumara Basin. Seismic velocities of the upper mantle of both plates are around 8 km/s and are considered normal. In contrast, on MANGO profile 4, about 1000 km to the north around the volcanically active Raoul Island, the incoming oceanic crust appears to bend considerably steeper and thus causes a 50 km narrower forearc with a smaller forearc basin. Furthermore, the upper mantle velocities in both plates are relatively low (7.4-7.7 km/s), likely indicating strong bending related deformation of the incoming plate and thermal activity within the arc possibly due to spreading. The central two transects MANGO 2 and 3, though without data coverage of the structure of the incoming plate, are more similar to MANGO 4. The arc regions appear to be strongly affected by

The regulatory roles of ethylene in plants include promotion of leaf and flower petal senescence, yellowing and abscission, as well as promotion of fruit abscission and ripening. This key hormone is also involved in regulation of a number of plant biotic and abiotic stress responses. A dramatic effect of ethylene on tropic response is the dual-and-opposing effect of ethylene on stem negative gravitropic response, in which short-term ethylene treatment (0.5 hour) appears to inhibit stem bending up following re-orientation of inflorescence of Arabidopsis. In contrast, a long-term treatment (12 hours) stimulates gravitropic response and promote stem curve up faster. This time-dependent and dose- independent dual-and-opposing effect of ethylene on stem gravitropism may involve multiple signaling pathways. Stable isotope metabolic labeling-based quantitative phosphoproteomics performed on ein2–5, ctr1–1 and rcn1–1 ethylene signaling mutants indeed confirmed the time-dependent protein phosphorylation changes and some of phosphorylation events are independent to ein2 loss-of- function gene in response to ethylene treatment. Functional studies on the phosphorylated transcription factor ERF110 isoform suggest that it is required for the control of flowering time via multiple ethylene signaling pathways.
