  1. Parent-adolescent conflict interactions and adolescent alcohol use.

    One important factor in adolescents' development of problem alcohol use is their family environment. Yet, the mechanisms that relate parenting to youth alcohol use are not well characterized. This study employed a naturalistic laboratory-based approach to observe parenting behaviors (support, structure, criticism) and adolescents' physiological and emotional responses to parent-adolescent interactions to examine associations with adolescent alcohol use. Fifty eight 10-16year olds and their parents completed a 10minute Parent Adolescent Interaction Task (PAIT) in which they discussed a mutually highly-rated conflict topic. Parental support, structure, and criticism were coded from the interaction. Adolescents' heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), reported emotions, and salivary cortisol were assessed before, during, and after the interaction. Findings indicated that lower parental structure and support were associated with youth's greater diastolic BP and anger arousal in response to the PAIT. Furthermore, higher HR, systolic BP, and cortisol responses to the interaction were associated with youth's alcohol use. Findings suggest that heightened emotional and physiological responses to parent-adolescent conflict interactions in youth may be one pathway by which parenting is associated with adolescent alcohol use and risk for abuse.     At large enough electron phonon coupling, the existence of bipolaronic, polaronic and mixed states is rigorously proven for the adiabatic Holstein model at any dimension and any band filling. The ground-state is one of them which then prove the existence of insulating Bipolaronic Charge Density Waves. The role of the quantum lattice fluctuations is analysed and found to be neglegible in that regime but to become essential in case of phonon softening then favoring the occurence of superconductivity. When a strong Hubbard term is also present, the bipolarons break into polorons and the ground state is expected to be amore » polaronic spin density wave. If the repulsive Hubbard term is comparable to the electron-phonon coupling, the energy for breaking a bipoloron into two polarons can become small and we get instead of these two degenerate structures, a pait of polarons bounded by a spin resonance which we call spin resonant bipolaron''. This resonant bipolaron is still strongly bound, but the role of the quantum lattice fluctuations becomes now very important and yields a sharp broadening of the bandwidth of this resonant bipolarona. Thus, the strong quantum character of these resonant bipolarons could prevent their localization into real space structures which could be insulating bipolaronic CDWs or polaronic SDWS, then favoring the formation of a superconducting coherent state with a possible high {Tc}.« less

    manipur, one of the northeastern states of India, lies on the ancient silk route and serves as a meeting point between the Southeast Asia and South Asia. this study was conducted to understand and estimate the genomic diversity among various population groups of Manipur, with a major goal of getting an insight into the peopling of India. seven human-specific Alu insertion/deletion polymorphisms were screened on 366 individuals belonging to eight ethnic groups of Manipur, including both tribal (Aimol, Kabui, Kom, Paite, and Thadou) and nontribal populations (Bamon, Muslims, and Meitei). all the biallelic loci are polymorphic except CD4, which is monomorphic in six out of the eight studied populations. The average heterozygosity values are low (0.309-0.395), with relatively higher average heterozygosity values among Bamons and Muslims than other studied populations, suggesting admixture in these two populations. Lower heterozygosity values of the tribal populations place them closer to the Chinese and Southeast Asian populations, indicating their late arrival in India coupled with geographical isolation. this study provides evidence for the genetic heterogeneity of the Manipur populations. It also supports the hypothesis, based on the archeological and linguistic findings, that the northeastern populations of India have a close genetic affinity with the southeastern and East Asian populations. The genetic discontinuity observed between the studied populations and the other non-Northeast Indian populations suggests the role of northeast border as a "barrier" rather than a corridor.

  9. Customary Marriages in Rural Pakistan.

    Although the incidents of customary marriages are frequently reported in Pakistani press, yet no large scale community-based study has ever been conducted to gauge the magnitude of such marriages. The present study is the first-ever community based study on this topic. 4,385 ever-married women, aged 18-83 years, from six rural districts, were interviewed to enquire about the types of their marriages. The data was collected through interviews conducted by trained female interviewers and analysed through SPSS-20. Twelve percent marriages were the result of Vanni, Swara, Sang Chatti, Badal , Bazo i.e. to settle blood feuds; 58.7% were Watta-Satta / Pait Likhai i.e. exchange marriages and pledging a fetus; in 7.9% case bride was bought; 1.0% marriages were Badle-Sullah i.e to settle dispute other than murder and 0.1% women were married to Quran. The traditional marriages, where wishes of both families and consent of the couple to be married are also considered, constituted 20.3%. The prevalence of Vanni, Swara / Sang Chatti / Badal / Bazo was the highest in Balochistan (22-24%) followed by Sindh (5-17%) and the least in Punjab (0-4%). The other practices in Balochistan were selling the bride (10-17%), Badle-Sulah (3%) and marriage to Quran (1%). Watta Satta was most prevalent in Sindh (66-78%), where 3-13% brides were bought. In Punjab also Watta-Satta was common (44-47%), where 0.5-4% brides were bought and 0.3-3% marriages were Budle-Sullah. Since laws against these harmful customs exist but are not applied forcefully, there is a great need to create massive awareness against such customs.
