  1. Do the Powerful Discount the Future Less? The Effects of Power on Temporal Discounting.

    Individuals have the tendency to discount rewards in the future, known as temporal discounting, and we find that sense of power (the felt capacity to influence the thinking and behavior of others) reduces such tendency. In Studies 1 and 2, we used both an experiment and a survey with organizational employees to demonstrate that power reduced temporal discounting. In Study 3, we replicated study 1 while exploring a unique cultural trait of Danbo , or indifference to fame and wealth, across two ethnic groups (Han and Tibetan groups) in China. While power reduces temporal discounting, the relationship between the two may be leveraged by individual differences of optimism, frustration, and Danbo . The results imply a more nuanced interpretation of how individual and situational factors can affect intertemporal choice.

    Microbial successions on the surface and in the interior of surface ripened semi-hard Danish Danbo cheeses were investigated by culture-dependent and -independent techniques. Culture-independent detection of microorganisms was obtained by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and pyrosequencing, using amplicons of 16S and 26S rRNA genes for prokaryotes and eukaryotes, respectively. With minor exceptions, the results from the culture-independent analyses correlated to the culture-dependent plating results. Even though the predominant microorganisms detected with the two culture-independent techniques correlated, a higher number of genera were detected by pyrosequencing compared to DGGE. Additionally, minor parts of the microbiota, i.e. comprising <10.0% of the operational taxonomic units (OTUs), were detected by pyrosequencing, resulting in more detailed information on the microbial succession. As expected, microbial profiles of the surface and the interior of the cheeses diverged. During cheese production pyrosequencing determined Lactococcus as the dominating genus on cheese surfaces, representing on average 94.7%±2.1% of the OTUs. At day 6 Lactococcus spp. declined to 10.0% of the OTUs, whereas Staphylococcus spp. went from 0.0% during cheese production to 75.5% of the OTUs at smearing. During ripening, i.e. from 4 to 18 weeks, Corynebacterium was the dominant genus on the cheese surface (55.1%±9.8% of the OTUs), with Staphylococcus (17.9%±11.2% of the OTUs) and Brevibacterium (10.4%±8.3% of the OTUs) being the second and third most abundant genera. Other detected bacterial genera included Clostridiisalibacter (5.0%±4.0% of the OTUs), as well as Pseudoclavibacter, Alkalibacterium and Marinilactibacillus, which represented <2% of the OTUs. At smearing, yeast counts were low with Debaryomyces being the dominant genus accounting for 46.5% of the OTUs.   4. β-FeSi II as a Kankyo (environmentally friendly) semiconductor for solar cells in the space application

    β-FeSi II defined as a Kankyo (Environmentally Friendly) semiconductor is regarded as one of the 3-rd generation semiconductors after Si and GaAs. Versatile features about β-FeSi II are, i) high optical absorption coefficient (>10 5cm -1), ii) chemical stability at temperatures as high as 937°C, iii) high thermoelectric power (Seebeck coefficient of k ~ 10 -4/K), iv) a direct energy band-gap of 0.85 eV, corresponding to 1.5μm of quartz optical fiber communication, v) lattice constant nearly well-matched to Si substrate, vi) high resistance against the humidity, chemical attacks and oxidization. Using β-FeSi II films, one can fabricate various devices such as Si photosensors, solar cells and thermoelectric generators that can be integrated basically on Si-LSI circuits. β-FeSi II has high resistance against the exposition of cosmic rays and radioactive rays owing to the large electron-empty space existing in the electron cloud pertinent to β-FeSi II. Further, the specific gravity of β-FeSi II (4.93) is placed between Si (2.33) and GaAs ((5.33). These features together with the aforementioned high optical absorption coefficient are ideal for the fabrication of solar cells to be used in the space. To demonstrate fascinating capabilities of β-FeSi II, one has to prepare high quality β-FeSi II films. We in this report summarize the current status of β-FeSi II film preparation technologies. Modified MBE and facing-target sputtering (FTS) methods are principally discussed. High quality β-FeSi II films have been formed on Si substrates by these methods. Preliminary structures of n-β-FeSi II /p-Si and p-β-FeSi II /n-Si solar cells indicated an energy conversion efficiency of 3.7%, implying that β-FeSi II is practically a promising semiconductor for a photovoltaic device.

  5. Active packaging of cheese with allyl isothiocyanate, an alternative to modified atmosphere packaging.

    The natural antimicrobial compound allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), found in mustard oil, is effective against cheese-related fungi both on laboratory media and cheese. Penicillium commune, Penicillium roqueforti, and Aspergillus flavus were more sensitive to AITC when it was added just after the spores had completed 100% germination and branching had started on Czapek yeast extract agar than were spores in the dormant phase. The use of 1 AITC label (Wasaouro interior labels, LD30D, 20 by 20 mm) in combination with atmospheric air in the packaging extended the shelf life of Danish Danbo cheese from 4 1/2 to 13 weeks. Two AITC labels extended the shelf life from 4 1/2 to 28 weeks. Both 1 and 2 labels in combination with modified atmosphere packaging extended the shelf life of the cheese from 18 to 28 weeks. This study showed that AITC was absorbed in the cheese, but it was not possible to detect any volatile breakdown products from AITC in the cheese. Cheese stored for up to 12 weeks with an AITC label had an unacceptable mustard flavor. The mustard flavor decreased to an acceptable level between weeks 12 and 28. Cheese stored in atmospheric air had a fresher taste without a CO2 off-flavor than did cheese stored in modified atmosphere packaging. AITC may be a good alternative to modified atmosphere packaging for cheese. The extended shelf life of cheese in the package is very desirable: the cheese can be transported longer distances, and the packaging can be used for the final maturing of the cheese. Furthermore, AITC can address problems such as pinholes and leaking seals in cheese packaging.
