    In recent years, New Mexico has hosted television and motion picture film crews working on both famous and not-so-famous productions. Perhaps the most famous of these productions was the television hit Breaking Bad. Perhaps the least famous production, which almost certainly no one remembers, is the 1962-1963 television series Empire. Empire was an hour long western that chronicled the lives of 1960s ranchers in New Mexico. The series starred Richard Egan, Ryan O’Neal, Denver Pyle, and Charles Bronson. Guest stars included Robert Vaughn (The Man from Uncle), Inger Stevens (The Farmer’s Daughter), Robert Culp (I Spy), and Telly Savalas (Kojak).

    The small rhacophorid frog Philautus abditus is geographically restricted to central Vietnam and adjacent Cambodia. Our fieldwork in northern Laos resulted in the discovery of a Philautus species that very closely resembles P. abditus, but is at least 330 km from the nearest known locality of that species. The Laos population differs from P. abditus in mitochondrial DNA and coloration, and is described here as a new species. Philautus nianeae sp. nov. is distinguished from its congeners by having the combination of a hidden tympanum; no nuptial pads; smooth skin; large black spots on the hidden surfaces of the hind limbs; light venter with dark spotting; and a bronze iris. A second species of Philautus from northern Laos, P. petilus, is transferred on the basis of morphology to the genus Theloderma. 

  10. Kinetic theory of nonlinear diffusion in a weakly disordered nonlinear Schrödinger chain in the regime of homogeneous chaos.

    We study the discrete nonlinear Schröinger equation with weak disorder, focusing on the regime when the nonlinearity is, on the one hand, weak enough for the normal modes of the linear problem to remain well resolved but, on the other, strong enough for the dynamics of the normal mode amplitudes to be chaotic for almost all modes. We show that in this regime and in the limit of high temperature, the macroscopic density ρ satisfies the nonlinear diffusion equation with a density-dependent diffusion coefficient, D(ρ) = D(0)ρ(2). An explicit expression for D(0) is obtained in terms of the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the linear problem, which is then evaluated numerically. The role of the second conserved quantity (energy) in the transport is also quantitatively discussed.

    Mining of metals creates a potential source of heavy metal contamination in the environment. An open pit copper mine situated in the Northwest of Sabah, East Malaysia has been known to pollute its surroundings especially with discharges involving heavy metals. Although extensive investigations of heavy metal pollution has been carried out, none of the studies performed so far has included amphibians as indicator of heavy metal contamination in the area. As amphibians live both on land and in water, a study on the heavy metal content of these animals will thus enable a more extensive evaluation of the degree ofmore » contamination by heavy metals. Bufo juxtasper was chosen since it inhabits the rocky streams and rivers which exist in both a polluted and non-polluted condition in Sabah. Its' tadpoles are herbivorous feeding mainly on plant detritus, while adults feed principally on ants (which are polyphagous). Furthermore the large adult size of Bufo juxtasper, in which the size of the liver has an allometric relationship with body size, may allow for differentiation between larval and adult uptake through regression analysis. Thus concentration of pollutants acquired only during the larval phase should show a declining or negative slope as a function of body size in adults.« less

    The species of Salix genus constitute potential sources of germplasm in the prevention of the environment degradation, and offer remedy for about two third from the all degradation types. The majority of the willow species, present a good adaptation to hypoxic conditions, feature which suggest that they manifest a preference for mineral nutrition in comparison with organic one. Thus, many of willow species can be developed on soils with a big amount of minerals and/or radionuclides, being both phytoremediatory species, as well as pioneer ones, contributing to the restoration of soil. Thus, the willow species, posses the capacity for development in degraded areas, natural or anthropic, as swamps, abandoning crops areas, sandy dune, riparian sandy areas, gravels, a.o. In this paper are present some laboratory comparative tests of heavy metals tolerance on four Salix sp. genotypes: clone 202 (Salix alba), hybrid 892 (Salix alba), Inger (Salix viminalis) and Gudrun (Salix viminalis). The genotypes of Salix alba are native from Romania, produced in the Forest Research and Management Institute Bucharest, while the genotypes of Salix viminalis are native from Sweden, but the plant material was produced under license in Romania by REBINA Agrar SRL. As plant material were used one-year-old cuttings (5-10 cm long), with 2-6 buds each. Per genotype, per heavy metal and each of three concentration five replication were used. There were ten experimental variants for each genotype: three concentrations for each of the heavy metals; concentrations selected, in the accordance SR ISO 11269-2/March 1999 and Control (tap water). The cuttings were maintained in metalic solutions for 15 days. In the days 7th and 15th, were performed biometrical observations on: the roots number and length, the shoots number and length, the leaves number/shoot, viability of the shoots.     The genus Quasipaa (Family Dicroglossidae) is currently composed of 11 species distributed in China and Southeast Asia: Quasipaa acanthophora (Dubois & Ohler 2009), Q. boulengeri (Günther 1889), Q. courtoisi (Angel 1922), Q. delacouri (Angel 1928), Q. exilispinosa (Liu & Hu, 1975), Q. fasciculispina (Inger 1970), Q. jiulongensis (Huang & Liu, 1985), Q. shini (Ahl 1930), Q. spinosa (David 1875), Q. verrucospinosa (Bourret 1937), Q. yei (Chen, Qu & Jiang 2002) (Frost 2016). These species are morphologically similar, and their taxonomy is subject to controversy (Che et al. 2009). Analyses of nuclear and mitochondrial genes suggest the genus likely encompass additional cryptic species (Ye et al. 2013). Bioacoustics has contributed to studies on the taxonomy of the genus (Ye et al. 2013; Shen et al. 2015), however, to date, only the advertisement calls of Q. spinosa are known (Yu & Zheng 2009; Chen et al. 2012; Shen et al. 2015). Here, we describe the advertisement calls of Q. shini, which inhabits streams in the southern part of central China(Guizhou, Hunan, Guangxi and Jiangxi) and is characterized by the presence of keratinized skin spines on the lateral surfaces of the body.

  14. The History of Winter Thermochron Mission: Utilizing An Innovative Technology to Promote Science Research in the Classroom.

Professor Svein Mathiesen of EALÁT (Reindeer Herders Vulnerability Network Study), and reindeer herder and Ph.D. student, Inger Marie G. Eira, are incorporating the HOW and GSN thermochrons, snow pit observations, and snowflake identification protocols into Inger Marie's work for her Ph.D. dissertation on snow changes and reindeer pastures in Northern Norway. The HOW program introduced the Global Snowflake Network and Thermochrons to them as a part of the Indigenous Peoples" Opening Ceremonies for the International Polar Year. Now launching is a new opportunity for teachers to engage in the Thermochron Mission, an online collaborative environment to develop and refine solid science research projects based on temperature studies prior to launching them in the classroom. The goal is to enhance the quality of science research projects for the secondary school classroom and to increase the comfort level of teachers in facilitating research opportunities for students. Interested teachers are invited to participate by submitting a proposal for a research project employing Thermochrons. Select entrants will receive a set of Thermochrons and participate in a peer-coached and scientifically reviewed online forum to guide the implementation of the research project and its refinement prior to classroom use. All projects will then be made available through the History of Winter web site.

  15. Identifying the complex melting reaction from 20 Ma to 14 Ma in Tsona leucogranite in Southern Tibet: geochemistry, zircon U-Pb chronology and Hf isotopes evidence

    The Miocene leucogranites, the record of the evolution of the Himalayan-Tibetan Orogen, extensively intruded the Greater Himalayan Sequence (GHS), and distributed along the South Tibetan Detachment System (STDS) (Guo and Wilson, 2012). Here we present a study of geochemistry, zircon U-Pb chronology and Hf isotopes on the Yamarong leucogranites from Tsona area, Eastern Himalaya, to explore the petrogenesis of the rocks, including melting condition and mechanism, and source of fluid within the magmatism through time. Our new results include: (1) The age of the Yamarong leucogranites range from 14 Ma to 20 Ma (YM1510-1 = 19.7 ± 0.1 Ma, n = 13; YM1502-1 = 17.5 ± 0.1 Ma, n = 12; YM1412 =14.2 ± 0.1 Ma, n = 18), which suggest that the anataxis processes have lasted for more than 6 Ma. (2) The geochemical features are different between the rocks with changing ages, especially between 20 Ma and 17 Ma. The Rb/Sr value of 20 Ma leucogranites (4.1-6.84) is lower than that of 17 Ma samples (5.12-19.02). The 20 Ma leucogranites have higher Ba contents (188-337 ppm) than that of 17 Ma rocks (50-158ppm), which exhibit different trends in the Rb/Sr versus Ba plot, and reveal different melting reaction from 20 Ma to 17 Ma. (Inger and Harris, 1993) (3) The ɛHf(t) isotopes of 20 Ma leucogranites are lower (average ɛHf(t) = -12.5) than that of 17 Ma ones (average ɛHf(t) = -10), which implies differential dissolution of inherited zircon during two partial melting events possibly due to different fluid contribution (Gao et al., 2017); (4) The positive linear relationship of LREEs versus Th in the rocks, with relatively higher contents of Th and LREEs in the 20 Ma, and lower in the 17 Ma leucogranites, which suggests the relationship were mostly controlled by monazite. And this further indicates more monazite was dissolved from the source region in the early stage (˜20Ma) than the later (17Ma) (Gao et al., 2017).     To identify specific cultural and behavioural factors that might be influenced to increase colostrum feeding in a rural village in Northern Ethiopia to improve infant health. Background interviews were conducted with six community health workers and two traditional birth attendants. A semi-structured tape-recorded interview was conducted with twenty mothers, most with children under the age of 5 years. Variables were: parental age and education; mother's ethnicity; number of live births and children's age; breast-feeding from birth through to weaning; availability and use of formula; and descriptions of colostrum v. other stages of breast milk. Participant interviews were conducted in Amharic and translated into English. Kossoye, a rural Amhara village with high prevalence rates of stunting: inappropriate neonatal feeding is thought to be a factor. Women (20-60 years of age) reporting at least one live birth (range: 1-8, mean: ∼4). Colostrum (inger) and breast milk (yetut wotet) were seen as different substances. Colostrum was said to cause abdominal problems, but discarding a portion was sufficient to mitigate this effect. Almost all (nineteen of twenty) women breast-fed and twelve (63 %) reported ritual prelacteal feeding. A majority (fifteen of nineteen, 79 %) reported discarding colostrum and breast-feeding within 24 h of birth. Prelacteal feeding emerged as an additional factor to be targeted through educational intervention. To maximize neonatal health and growth, we recommend culturally tailored education delivered by community health advocates and traditional health practitioners that promotes immediate colostrum feeding and discourages prelacteal feeding.

  17. Hydrodynamic Limit of Multiple SLE

    Recently del Monaco and Schleißinger addressed an interesting problem whether one can take the limit of multiple Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) as the number of slits N goes to infinity. When the N slits grow from points on the real line R in a simultaneous way and go to infinity within the upper half plane H, an ordinary differential equation describing time evolution of the conformal map g_t(z) was derived in the N → ∞ limit, which is coupled with a complex Burgers equation in the inviscid limit. It is well known that the complex Burgers equation governs the hydrodynamic limit of the Dyson model defined on R studied in random matrix theory, and when all particles start from the origin, the solution of this Burgers equation is given by the Stieltjes transformation of the measure which follows a time-dependent version of Wigner's semicircle law. In the present paper, first we study the hydrodynamic limit of the multiple SLE in the case that all slits start from the origin. We show that the time-dependent version of Wigner's semicircle law determines the time evolution of the SLE hull, K_t \\subset H\\cup R, in this hydrodynamic limit. Next we consider the situation such that a half number of the slits start from a>0 and another half of slits start from -a < 0, and determine the multiple SLE in the hydrodynamic limit. After reporting these exact solutions, we will discuss the universal long-term behavior of the multiple SLE and its hull K_t in the hydrodynamic limit.

    Over the last 20 years the analysis of stable isotope ratios of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen and sulphur have gradually become a formidable tool for the animal ecologists (Hobson and Wassenaar, 1997; Marra et al., 1998; Inger and Bearhop, 2008). In particular many studies have been developed on tracking the movement and the diet of birds in time and space, fundamental to understanding their ecology, but also inherently difficult to determine. The aim of this study was to deepen the origin and behaviour of migratory bird species crossing the Trentino area, an Italian alpine region, during the post-nuptial migration period, and monitored by a long term study by ringing activities (Progetto Alpi, Pedrini et al. 2008). About 800 samples of feathers from 48 local bird species were collected during 2010 - 2012 years. Analysis of d13C, d15N, d18O and dD were performed on these samples using an Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS) interfaced with an Elemental Analyser or a pyrolyser after a pre-treatment of the feathers (cleaning with diethyl ether:methanol 2:1, equilibration to ambient humitity for 4 days and, for d18O and dD a final drying step wth P2O5 for another 4 days). A first survey of the obtained data is presented in this work. As expected, the first statistical elaboration/'look' of them confirmed that 13C can be used to trace the importance of different carbon pools to a consumer (e.g. C3, C4 or CAM plants, marine algae) whereas d15N vary as a function of a variety of biological, geochemical and anthropogenic processes and is a very effective tracer of trophic level. In particular, it was interesting to note that the specie Loxia curvirostra showed particularly high d13C and low d15N values probably due to the eating of conifer seeds and whereas the specie Motacilla flava, that bases its diet primarily on worms and insects, presented high d15N values.   2. A Legacy for IPY: The Global Snowflake Network (GSN) Together With Art and Ice, and Music and Ice; Unique new Features for Science Education.

    The Global Snowflake Network (GSN) is a program that is simultaneously a science program and an education program. When the validation of the procedures (collection and identification of the type of snowflakes and the associated satellite image archive, as a serial record of a storm), is achieved, then the program becomes a scientific resource. This latter is the ultimate goal. That's why NASA has launched the Global Snowflake Network, a massive project that aims to involve the general public to "collect and classify" falling snowflakes. The data will be compiled into a massive database, along with satellite images, that will help climatologists and others who study climate-related phenomena gain a better understanding of wintry meteorology as they track various snowstorms around the globe. A great deal of information about the atmosphere dynamics and cloud microphysics can be derived from the serial collection and identification of the types of snow crystals and the degree of riming of the snow crystals during the progress of a snow storm. Forecasting winter weather depends in part on cloud physics, which deals with precipitation type, and if it happens to be snow- the crystal type, size, and density of the snowflake population. The History of Winter website will host the evolving snow and ice features for the IPY. Type "Global Snowflake Network" into the search engine (such as GOOGLE) and you will receive a demonstration of the operation of the preliminary GSN by the Indigenous community. The expeditions FINNMARK2007 and the POLAR Husky GoNorth 2007 expedition took the complement of Thermochrons with multimedia instructions for the Global Snowflake Network. This approach demonstrates the continuous Thermochron monitoring of expedition temperature and provides otherwise inaccessible snowflake information to NASA and others interested in the Polar region snow. These 664 items were iteratively submitted to 3 rounds of cognitive interviewing with 50 community mental health center participants; the expert panel reviewed session summaries and agreed on a final set of 661 clear and concise self-report items representing the desired criteria in the DSM-5. The SAGE-SR constructed from this item pool took an average of 14 min to complete in a nonclinical sample versus 24 min in a clinical sample. Responses to individual items can be combined to generate DSM criteria endorsements and differential diagnoses, as well as provide indices of individual symptom severity. Preliminary measures of test-retest reliability in a small, nonclinical sample were promising, with good to excellent reliability for screener items in 11 of 13 diagnostic screening modules (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] or kappa coefficients ranging from .60 to .90), with mania achieving fair test-retest reliability (ICC=.50) and other substance use endorsed too infrequently for analysis.   4. A BRIGHT RING OF STAR BIRTH AROUND A GALAXY'S CORE

    through the stars' gravitational attraction. The two spiral arms outside the ring are probably unrelated to the dust lanes, and seem to contain very little dust or gas. The stars in these spiral arms are bluer than most of the galaxy, indicating that many of them are relatively young, less than 200 million years old. However, they are older than those in the ring. This information suggests that the neighborhood of star formation is moving closer to the galaxy's core. Another interpretation has the arms formed through the gravitational interaction of the embedded bar and ring of stars, causing them to spray outward. This picture was created by combining images taken in ultraviolet, blue, visible, infrared, and H-alpha. The purple color represents hydrogen gas being excited by hot, young star clusters.   5. Dating the Duration and Termination of Sinistral Shear in the Western Tauern Window: Implications for Indentation and Exhumation in the Eastern Alps

    -12 Ma. We observe a systematic relationship between the ages of the postkinematic grains and the age spread of the syn-kinematic ones. The age of the post-kinematic grains always coincides with the youngest age determined within the syn-kinematic grains. We interpret this relationship as indicating that the growth of post-kinematic minerals followed almost instantaneously the termination of deformation. As a consequence, the age of phengites overprinting the mylonitic foliation yields a precise age for the termination of deformation. The spread in age variation of phengites goes together with a spread in Si content, consequently the postkinematic phengites have a higher Si content compared to the overprinted syn-kinematic ones. Therefore the metamorphic pressure conditions of the post-kinematic phengites were lower, indicating continuous deformation during exhumation within a time interval of approximately 12 Ma. We interpret these ages as formation ages during or after shearing, respectively. Muscovite blasts of the undeformed sample yield age values varying between 22 and 34 Ma. We interpret these ages as cooling ages, following the metamorphic peak temperatures. To conclude, sinistral shear in the western TW started at least 24 Ma ago and terminated at 12 Ma. Therefore, these shear zones do not predate dextral displacements or lateral extrusion within the eastern Tauern sub-dome, which are also Miocene (Inger & Cliff, 1994, Frisch et al., 1998, Glodny et al., 2008). This conclusion suggests that they formed as part of an orogen-scale conjugate system, accommodating Miocene shortening due to South-Alpine indentation. Since these shear zones are transpressive, showing a component of vertical displacement, their age may also constrain exhumation of the Tauern dome.

  6. PREFACE: New nuclear structure phenomena in the vicinity of closed shells

    first 100Sn nuclei were observed at GSI, Germany, and in a subsequent experiment at GANIL, France. Results from these experiments were reported during the symposium as were much of the recent data around "classical" shell model nuclei. Neutron deficient nuclei in the Sn region show a variety of phenomena, such as coexisting shapes, enhanced quadrupole transitions etc. The role of intruder states in this mass region as well as the excitation pattern is still a puzzle for experimentalists and theoreticians and was discussed during the meeting. More work is needed until a unified picture of the structure of these nuclei will emerge. The combination of powerful mean-field models, large scale shell model calculations as well as new algebraic approaches to nuclear structure shows the strong and lively development in the field of nuclear theory as was evident from the presentations. It is obvious that great effort is needed to match the rapid development in the field of experimental nuclear structure. The organizing committee expresses special thanks to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, through its Nobel Institute for Physics, for its generous support.
