  1. Jelena Krmpotić-Nemanić (1921-2008): contributions to human neuroanatomy.

    Jelena Krmpotić-Nemanić (1921-2008) was a world-famous anatomist, internationally distinguished otolaryngologist, a member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences & Arts and appreciated professor at the School of Medicine University of Zagreb. The founding influence in her scientific career came from her mentor Drago Perovid who was a student of Ferdinand Hochstetter, the leading authority in the field of human developmental neuroanatomy and embryology. Such an influence was obviously important in early shaping of the research agenda of Jelena Krmpotić-Nemanić, and it remains important in a long series of studies on developing human telencephalon initiated by Ivica Kostović and his collaborators - with an always present and active support of Jelena Krmpotić-Nemanić. The aim of this mini review is to briefly describe her numerous contributions to the anatomy of the human peripheral and central nervous system.

    Prof. dr Jelena Milogradov-Turin was born in Belgrade to a family of Russian immigrants on 28 January 1935. She completed her primary and secondary education in Belgrade and after that enrolled at the Faculty of Sciences and Mathematics - Physics Group, from which she graduated in 1959. She obtained her MSc degree in 1972 from the University of Manchester, England, with a thesis entitled "The Survey of the Region 6^{h} < α < 19^{h}, -25° ≤ δ ≤ 70° at 38 MHz ". Her supervisor was a fellow of the Royal Society, Sir Francis Graham-Smith, later on appointed the 13th Astronomer Royal. She defended her PhD thesis "The All Sky Survey at 38 MHz and the Galactic Spectral Index" in the field of astronomical/astrophysical sciences, at the University of Belgrade in 1982.

  6. [Unrealized project of the infectious disease Hospital of Rijeka from 1908 - 1912].

    Parallel with the design of the main city hospital of Rijeka, architect Francesco Mattiassi between 1908 and 1912 made the project for the Infectious disease hospital which had to replace existing hospital - subsidiary. After some years of disputes regarding the location, decision was reached to place the new hospital onto the terrain Sv. Jelena na Plasama (St. Helen at Plase, today Pehlin). The infection disease complex was conceived as a pavilion, which was, because of better isolation, usual concept for this type of hospitals. Buildings are placed to merge with the greenery, connected with road and pedestrian paths. Inside the complex there were clean and unclean watch-houses, administration, utility and service pavilion, laundry-room, observation pavilion, four patients pavilions and necroscopy pavilion with crematorium furnace. Functionality, simplicity and temperance are the main characteristics of this, for the time very modern architecture with secession style marks. Even today, after more than hundred years, this unrealized visionary project, because of its high technical, artistic and conceptual level, still effects very contemporary and usable.

  7. Application of atmospheric plasma sources in growth and differentiation of plant and mammalian stem cells

    The expansion of the plasma medicine and its demand for in-vivo treatments resulted in fast development of various plasma devices that operate at atmospheric pressure. These sources have to fulfill all demands for application on biological samples. One of the sources that meet all the requirements needed for treatment of biological material is plasma needle. Previously, we have used this device for sterilization of planctonic samples of bacteria, MRSA biofilm, for improved differentiation of human periodontal stem cells into osteogenic line and for treatment of plant meristematic cells. It is well known that plasma generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) that strongly affect metabolism of living cells. One of the open issues is to correlate external plasma products (electrons, ions, RNS, ROS, photons, strong fields etc.) with the immediate internal response which triggers or induces effects in the living cell. For that purpose we have studied the kinetics of enzymes which are typical indicators of the identity of reactive species from the plasma created environment that can trigger signal transduction in the cell and ensue cell activity.   8. [Dr. Jovan Andrejević Jols, the first Serbian anatomist life, work and achievement].

    Doctor Jovan Andrejević Joles was one of the most educated Serbs of the 19th century, a medical doctor, scientist, journalist and translator. He was born in 1883 in Novi Sad. Even as a student of medicine he was active in scientific work, which resulted in a paper entiteled "The fine structure of the liver," later published in one of the most eminent medical journals in Europe. He completed the study of medicine in Vienna. He did not accept the position at the Medical Faculty in Vienna, and returned to Novi Sad, where he quickly gained an excellent reputation as a physician. He participated in the founding of the Serbian National Theatre in 1861, he was also one of the most active contributors of Matica Srpska, wrote many articles, critics and reviews, and was also regarded as the founder of aesthetic romanticism in Serbs. With Laza Kostić, he was the first among the Serbs to translate Shakespeare. At that time, when he was only 30 years old, he wrote about a brand-new art - photography. He lived in a harmonious marriage with Jelena - Ilka Bajić, who after Joles' death remarried to a captain of the Serbian army, and after his murder, became famous for the assassination attempt of King Milan Obrenović (recorded in history textbooks as the "Rebellion of Ilka"). Dr. Jovan Andrejevć died prematurely of tuberculosis, at that time an incurable disease, in 1864 in Novi Sad.
