    USGS Publications Warehouse

Hutt, Charles R.; Evans, John R.; Yokoi, Isamu

    2008-01-01

The VSE-355G3 seismometer is a broadband seismometer (called a 'servo velocity meter' by Tokyo Sokushin) with a specified clip level of 2 m/s and a flat response to earth velocity from 0.008 Hertz (Hz) to 70 Hz. Mr. Yokoi and Mr. Kurahashi of Tokyo Sokushin shipped one instrument to the U. S. Geological Survey's Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory (ASL) for testing in early September 2007. They gave a presentation on this instrument and some of their other products to the authors and others on September 6, 2007. Testing of the VSE-355G3, Serial Number 70520, commenced on Friday, September 7, 2007.

    2010-01-01

This dissertation examines how the Japanese particles "nado", "toka", and "tari" which all may be translated as "such as", "etc.", or "like" behave differently in written and spoken discourse. According to traditional analyses (e.g. Martin, 1987), these particles are assumed to be Exemplifying Particles (EP) used to provide concrete examples to…

6. Particle collisions near a three-dimensional warped AdS black hole

In this paper we consider the warped AdS3 black hole solution of topologically massive gravity with a negative cosmological constant, and we study the possibility that it acts as a particle accelerator by analyzing the energy in the center of mass (CM) frame of two colliding particles in the vicinity of its horizon, which is known as the Bañnados, Silk and West (BSW) process. Mainly, we show that the critical angular momentum (L_c) of the particle decreases when the warping parameter(ν ) increases. Also, we show that despite the particle with L_c being able to exist for certain values of the conserved energy outside the horizon, it will never reach the event horizon; therefore, the black hole cannot act as a particle accelerator with arbitrarily high CM energy on the event horizon. However, such a particle could also exist inside the outer horizon, with the BSW process being possible on the inner horizon. On the other hand, for the extremal warped AdS3 black hole, the particle with L_c and energy E could exist outside the event horizon and, the CM energy blows up on the event horizon if its conserved energy fulfills the condition E2>(ν 2+3)l2/3(ν ^{2-1)}, with the BSW process being possible.

Since 1939, devastating earthquakes with magnitude greater than seven ruptured North Anatolian Fault (NAF) westward, starting from 1939 Erzincan (Ms=7.9) at the eastern Turkey and including the latest 1999 Izmit-Golcuk (Ms=7.4) and the Duzce (Ms=7.2) earthquakes in the eastern Marmara region, Turkey. On the other hand, the west of the Sea of Marmara an Mw7.4 earthquake ruptured the NAF' s Ganos segment in 1912. The only un-ruptured segments of the NAF in the last century are within the Sea of Marmara, and are identified as a "seismic gap" zone that its rupture may cause a devastating earthquake. In order to unravel the seismic risks of the Marmara region a comprehensive multidisciplinary research project The MarDiM project "Earthquake And Tsunami Disaster Mitigation in The Marmara Region and Disaster Education in Turkey", has already been started since 2003. The project is conducted in the framework of "Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS)" sponsored by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). One of the main research field of the project is "Seismic characterization and damage prediction" which aims to improve the prediction accuracy of the estimation of the damages induced by strong ground motions and tsunamis based on reliable source parameters, detailed deep and shallow velocity structure and building data. As for detailed deep and shallow velocity structure microtremor array measurement surveys were conducted in Zeytinburnu district of Istanbul and Tekirdag province at about 81 sites on October 2013 and September 2014. Also in September 2014, 11 accelerometer units were installed mainly in public buildings in both Zeytinburnu and Tekirdag area and are currently in operation. Each accelerometer unit compose of a Network Sensor (CV-374A2) by Tokyo Sokushin, post processing PC for data storage and power supply unit. The Network Sensor (CV-374A2) consist of three servo

  11. EHD Approach to Tornadic Thunderstorms and Methods of Their Destruction

    2005-05-01

In many cases, tornadoes are accompanied or involved by lightning discharges and are thought to be com- posed of uncharged and charged components different from each other in terms of velocity, vorticity, heli- city, and appearance (shape and luminosity). Their visible dark portion may correspond to uncharged tor- nadoes, while luminous or bright part may involve charged tornadoes with return strokes. Usually, un- charged tornadoes have been considered to be ascending hot streams of thermohydrodynamic origin. This is the conventional theory of tornadoes, based on hydrodynamics (HD) or thermohydrodynamics (THD) but does not consider electrical effects that are really significant in tornadic thunderstorms..It has been shown, however, that a new electrohydrodynamics (EHD) established and developed over the last more than a decade is applicable to tornadic thunderstorms with lightning. This paper summarizes such an EHD approach and proposes the methods of tornado destruction based on EHD. Space charge and electric field configurations in tornadic thunderstorms are considered to be quadrupole-like, taking into account the cloud-charge images onto the ground. Accordingly, dynamics of particles and EHD flows in an electric quadrupole forming an electric cusp and mirror can straightly apply to those circumstances. When the gas pressure is below the breakdown threshold, there occur helical motion of particles, not only charged but also even uncharged, and/or vortex generation. While for gases whose pressure is beyond the breakdown threshold, the following basic processes succeed one after another. When the grain is uncharged, a dis- charge channel is formed towards each pole as a result of X-type reconnection. For a negatively or posi- tively charged grain, I-type reconnection occurs between the grain and positive or negative poles, respect- ively. For uncharged two grains, O-type reconnection between both grains could be involved in addition to X-type between each pole
