    Regional glucose metabolic rates were measured in patients with panic disorder during the performance of auditory discrimination. Those regions examined by Reiman and colleagues in their blood flow study of panic disorder were examined with a higher resolution positron emission tomography (PET) scanner and with the tracer (F-18)-2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG). In contrast to the blood flow findings of Reiman et al., we did not find global gray metabolic differences between patients with panic disorder and normal controls. Consistent with the findings of Reiman et al., we found hippocampal region asymmetry. We also found metabolic decreases in the left inferior parietal lobulemore » and in the anterior cingulate (trend), as well as an increase in the metabolic rate of the medial orbital frontal cortex (trend) of panic disorder patients. It is unclear whether the continuous performance task (CPT) enhanced or diminished findings that would have been noted in a study performed without task.« less

    The nature of plasma equilibrium in a magnetic field with stochastic field lines is examined, expanding upon the ideas first described by Reiman et al. The magnetic partial differential equation (PDE) that determines the equilibrium Pfirsch-Schlüter currents is treated as a passive stochastic PDE for μj/B. Renormalization leads to a stochastic Langevin equation for μ in which the resonances at the rational surfaces are broadened by the stochastic diffusion of the field lines; even weak radial diffusion can significantly affect the equilibrium, which need not be flattened in the stochastic region. Particular attention is paid to satisfying the periodicity constraints in toroidal configurations with sheared magnetic fields.     Plasma equilibria that include regions of stochastic magnetic fields are of interest in a variety of applications, including tokamaks with ergodic limiters and high-pressure stellarators. Such equilibria are examined theoretically, and a numerical algorithm for their construction is described.^2,3 % The balance between stochastic diffusion of magnetic lines and small effects^2 omitted from the simplest MHD description can support pressure and current profiles that need not be flattened in stochastic regions. The diffusion can be described analytically by renormalizing stochastic Langevin equations for pressure and parallel current j, with particular attention being paid to the satisfaction of the periodicity constraints in toroidal configurations with sheared magnetic fields.     For the (non-axisymmetric) stellarator class of plasma confinement devices to be feasible candidates for fusion power stations it is essential that, to a good approximation, the magnetic field lines lie on nested flux surfaces; however, the inherent lack of a continuous symmetry implies that magnetic islands responsible for breaking the smooth topology of the flux surfaces are guaranteed to exist. Thus, the suppression of magnetic islands is a critical issue for stellarator design, particularly for small aspect ratio devices. Pfirsch-Schlüter currents, diamagnetic currents and resonant coil fields contribute to the formation of magnetic islands, and the challenge is to design the plasma and coils such that these effects cancel. Magnetic islands in free-boundary high-pressure full-current stellarator magnetohydrodynamic equilibria are suppressed using a procedure based on the Princeton Iterative Equilibrium Solver (Reiman and Greenside 1986 Comput. Phys. Commun. 43 157) which iterates the equilibrium equations to obtain the plasma equilibrium. At each iteration, changes to a Fourier representation of the coil geometry are made to cancel resonant fields produced by the plasma.   20. Constructing Integrable High-pressure Full-current Free-boundary Stellarator Magnetohydrodynamic Equilibrium Solutions

    For the (non-axisymmetric) stellarator class of plasma confinement devices to be feasible candidates for fusion power stations it is essential that, to a good approximation, the magnetic field lines lie on nested flux surfaces; however, the inherent lack of a continuous symmetry implies that magnetic islands responsible for breaking the smooth topology of the flux surfaces are guaranteed to exist. Thus, the suppression of magnetic islands is a critical issue for stellarator design, particularly for small aspect ratio devices. Pfirsch-Schluter currents, diamagnetic currents, and resonant coil fields contribute to the formation of magnetic islands, and the challenge is to designmore » the plasma and coils such that these effects cancel. Magnetic islands in free-boundary high-pressure full-current stellarator magnetohydrodynamic equilibria are suppressed using a procedure based on the Princeton Iterative Equilibrium Solver [Reiman and Greenside, Comp. Phys. Comm. 43 (1986) 157] which iterate s the equilibrium equations to obtain the plasma equilibrium. At each iteration, changes to a Fourier representation of the coil geometry are made to cancel resonant fields produced by the plasma.   1. Use of high order, periodic orbits in the PIES code

    We have implemented a version of the PIES code (Princeton Iterative Equilibrium SolverootnotetextA. Reiman et al 2007 Nucl. Fusion 47 572) that uses high order periodic orbits to select the surfaces on which straight magnetic field line coordinates will be calculated. The use of high order periodic orbits has increase the robustness and speed of the PIES code. We now have more uniform treatment of in-phase and out-of-phase islands. This new version has better convergence properties and works well with a full Newton scheme. We now have the ability to shrink islands using a bootstrap like current and this includes the m=1 island in tokamaks.

    A new formulation of the free boundary problem for general three-dimensional configurations has been formulated for the PIES( Reiman, A. H., Greenside, H. S., Compt. Phys. Commun. 43), (1986). code. The new formulation is more flexible and is faster that the original formulation described in Merkel et al(Merkel, P., Johnson, J. L., Monticello, D.A., et al., Proceedings of the Fourteenth International Conference on Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research paper IAEA-CN-60 | D-P-II-10) (1994) . These advantages will be described and first results of the application of this new algorithm to W7-X and NCSX (National Compact Stellarator Experiment) configurations will be presented.

    Flow and nonsymmetric effects can play a large role in plasma equilibria and energy confinement. A concept for such a 3D equilibrium code was developed and presented in 2011. The code is called the Kyoto ITerative Equilibrium Solver (KITES) [1], and the concept is based largely on the PIES code [2]. More recently, the work-in-progress KITES code was used to calculate force-free equilibria. Here, progress and results on the inclusion of pressure and flow in the code are presented.   4. NTS radiological assessment project: comparison of delta-surface interpolation with kriging for the Frenchman Lake region of area 5

    The primary objective of this report is to compare the results of delta surface interpolation with kriging on four large sets of radiological data sampled in the Frenchman Lake region at the Nevada Test Site. The results of kriging, described in Barnes, Giacomini, Reiman, and Elliott, are very similar to those using the delta surface interpolant. The other topic studied is in reducing the number of sample points and obtaining results similar to those using all of the data. The positive results here suggest that great savings of time and money can be made. Furthermore, the delta surface interpolant ismore » viewed as a contour map and as a three dimensional surface. These graphical representations help in the analysis of the large sets of radiological data.« less

  5. How prepared are transition-age deaf and hard of hearing students for adult living? Results of the transition competence battery.

    One result of the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act and related legislation is that most deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students attend local public schools. Although such placements may provide greater access to general education classrooms and curriculum, DHH students' specialized needs are less likely to be addressed. Using the Transition Competence Battery (TCB; Reiman, Bullis, & Davis, 1993), the researchers examined the transition strengths and needs of 53 middle and high school DHH students attending public schools. It was found that the students had substantial transition competence deficits and that none reached the recommended competence levels on more than 4 of the 6 subtests. The TCB is an important transition tool that fulfills requirements under the 2004 Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act Amendments to use age-appropriate and results-oriented transition assessments that document program and intervention outcomes.

    The existence of bootstrap currents in both tokamaks and stellarators was confirmed, experimentally, more than ten years ago. Such currents can have significant effects on the equilibrium and stability of these MHD devices. In addition, stellarators, with the notable exception of W7-X, are predicted to have such large bootstrap currents that reliable equilibrium calculations require the self-consistent evaluation of bootstrap currents. Modeling of discharges which contain islands requires an algorithm that does not assume good surfaces. Only one of the two 3-D equilibrium codes that exist, PIES( Reiman, A. H., Greenside, H. S., Compt. Phys. Commun. 43), (1986)., can easily be modified to handle bootstrap current.   9. PIES free boundary stellarator equilibria with improved initial conditions

    The MFBE procedure developed by Strumberger (1997 Nucl. Fusion 37 19) is used to provide an improved starting point for free boundary equilibrium computations in the case of W7-X (Nührenberg and Zille 1986 Phys. Lett. A 114 129) using the Princeton iterative equilibrium solver (PIES) code (Reiman and Greenside 1986 Comput. Phys. Commun. 43 157). Transferring the consistent field found by the variational moments equilibrium code (VMEC) (Hirshmann and Whitson 1983 Phys. Fluids 26 3553) to an extended coordinate system using the VMORPH code, a safe margin between plasma boundary and PIES domain is established. The new EXTENDER_P code implements a generalization of the virtual casing principle, which allows field extension both for VMEC and PIES equilibria. This facilitates analysis of the 5/5 islands of the W7-X standard case without including them in the original PIES computation.

    Fixed- and free-boundary equilibria for Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) [W. Lotz et al., Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1990 (Proc. 13th Int. Conf. Washington, DC, 1990), (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1991), Vol. 2, p. 603] configurations are calculated using the Princeton Iterative Equilibrium Solver (PIES) [A. H. Reiman et al., Comput. Phys. Commun., 43, 157 (1986)] to deal with magnetic islands and stochastic regions. Usually, these W7-X configurations require a large number of iterations for PIES convergence. Here, two methods have been successfully tested in an attempt to decrease the number of iterations needed for convergence. First, periodic sequences of different blending parameters are used. Second, the initial guess is vastly improved by using results of the Variational Moments Equilibrium Code (VMEC) [S. P. Hirshmann et al., Phys. Fluids 26, 3553 (1983)]. Use of these two methods have allowed verification of the Hamada condition and tendency of "self-healing" of islands has been observed.

  11. Coil Realizability Criteria for Stellarator Surface Currents

    The method of automatic optimization(P. Merkel, Nucl. Fusion 27 (1987) 867.) for the design of stellarator coils (NESCOIL code) typically yields a two-dimensional surface current potential φ from which current filaments can be extracted, using the relation Ks = n × nabla φ. Until now, the realizability of coils obtained in this way has been largely decoupled from the physics optimization process which originally provided the matching surface on which B_normal = 0 (thus determining φ). For quasi-axisymmetric stellarators (QAS)(A. Reiman, et al., to be published.) or quasi- omnigeneous stellarators(S. P. Hirshman, D. A. Spong, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 80 (1998) 528.) with finite parallel plasma currents, it is often found that the current potential becomes too complicated to be consistent with realizable coils. We have developed analytic measures of the complexity of the current potential. These measures can be incorporated into the physics optimizer and can limit the plasma boundaries to those which are likely to produce realizable coils.

  12. Calculation of the Neoclassical Radial Electric Field using a Gyrokinetic δ f Code

    The calculation of the radial electric field in stellarator devices is an important issue in neoclassical transport. The radial electric field, which is also related to the formation of transport barriers, can affect the anomalous transport. In stellarator configurations which depart only weakly from axi-symmetry, a direct Monte Carlo calculations of the radial electric is difficult due to the large statistical fluctuations. We present a novel method based on the evaluation of the perpendicular ( p_⊥ ) and parallel ( p_|| ) pressures. The variation of widehatp ≡ ( p_|| + p_⊥ ) /2 on the magnetic surface provides a low-noise calculation of the radial electric field. The low-noise method has been implemented in a three-dimensional gyro-kinetic particle code [1].   13. Calculating Pressure-Driven Current Near Magnetic Islands for 3D MHD Equilibria

    In general, 3D MHD equilibria in toroidal plasmas do not result in nested pressure surfaces. Instead, islands and chaotic regions appear in the equilibrium. Near small magnetic islands, the pressure varies within the flux surfaces, which has a significant effect on the pressure-driven current, introducing singularities. Previously, the MHD equilibrium current near a magnetic island was calculated, including the effect of ``stellarator symmetry,'' wherein the singular components of the pressure-driven current vanish [A. H. Reiman, Phys. Plasmas 23, 072502 (2016)]. Here we first solve for pressure in a cylindrical plasma from the heat diffusion equation, after adding a helical perturbation. We then numerically calculate the corresponding Pfirsch-Schluter current. At the small island limit, we compare the pressure-driven current with the previously calculated solution, and far from the island, we recover the solution for nested flux surfaces. Lastly, we compute the current for a toroidal plasma for symmetric and non-symmetric geometries.

  14. Mentor and protege attitudes towards the science mentoring program

    The purpose of this study was to examine mentor and protege attitudes towards the science mentoring program. This study focused on the attitudes that proteges and mentors participating in the Puerto Rico Statewide Systemic Initiative (PRSSI) have towards the PRSSI mentoring program and the mentoring relationship. The data was gathered from a questionnaire for mentors and beginning teachers designed by Reiman and Edelfelt in 1990. It was used to measure the mentor and protege attitudes towards the science mentoring program by three variables: mentor-protege relationship, professional development, and supportive school climate. Data were collected from 56 science teachers (proteges) and 21 mentors from fourteen (14) junior high schools. Descriptive statistics were used to indicate both proteges and mentor attitudes towards the science mentoring program. T-tests were conducted to establish if there was a statistically significant difference between protege and mentor attitudes. In conclusion, the attitudes of mentors and proteges in regard to mentor-protege relationship, professional development, and supportive school climate were similar.

  15. Investigation of the High, Finite n Ballooning Mode Limit for Compact Quasi-Axially Symmetric Stellarators

    The standard ballooning-mode beta limit comes from an infinite-n, radially local, ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) calculation. Finite-n ballooning modes have been observed in tokamak plasmas [1]. Investigations of optimized quasiaxially symmetric stellarators with three dimensional, global, ideal MHD codes have recently shown good stability for the external kink, ``vertical" and infinite-n ballooning modes [2,3]. However, infinite-n ballooning stability may be too restrictive, due to its sensitivity to features in the local shear and curvature.   16. Quasi-Axially Symmetric Stellarators with 3 Field Periods

    Compact hybrid configurations with 2 field periods have been studied recently as candidates for a proof of principle experiment at PPPL, cf. A. Reiman et al., Physics design of a high beta quasi-axially symmetric stellarator, J. Plas. Fus. Res. SERIES 1, 429(1998). This enterprise has led us to the discovery of a family of quasi-axially symmetric stellarators with 3 field periods that seem to have significant advantages, although their aspect ratios are a little larger. They have reversed shear and perform better in a local analysis of ballooning modes. Nonlinear equilibrium and stability calculations predict that the average beta limit may be as high as 6% if the bootstrap current turns out to be as big as that expected in comparable tokamaks. The concept relies on a combination of helical fields and bootstrap current to achieve adequate rotational transform at low aspect ratio.   17. Stabilization of Tokamak Plasmas by the Addition of Nonaxisymmetric Coils

    It has been recognized since the early days of the fusion program that stellarator coils can be used to stabilize current carrying, toroidal, magnetically confined plasmas.[1] More recently, it has been shown that the vertical mode in a tokamak can be stabilized by a relatively simple set of parallelogram-shaped, localized, nonaxisymmetric coils.[2] We show that by superposing sets of these parallelogram-shaped, nonaxisymmetric coils at different locations, it is possible to reproduce the coil current patterns for conventional stellarator coils as well as those for Furth-Hartman coils[3]. This allows us to gain insight into the physics of stabilization produced by various sets of nonaxisymmetric coils by analysis of the effect on stability of localized coils at differing locations.   18. Global Search Methods for Stellarator Design

    We have implemented a new variant Stellopt-DE of the stellarator optimizer Stellopt used by the NCSX team.(A. Reiman, G. Fu, S. Hirshman, D. Monticello, et al., EPS Meeting on Controlled Fusion and Plasma Physics Research, Maastricht, the Netherlands, June 14-18, 1999, (European Physical Society, Petit-Lancy, 1999).) It is based on the ``differential evolution'' (DE) algorithm,(R. Storn, K. Price, U.C. Berkeley Technical Report TR-95-012, ICSI (March, 1995).) a global search method which is far less prone than local algorithms such as the Levenberg-Marquardt method presently used in Stellopt to become trapped in local suboptimal minima of the cost function \\chi. Explorations of stellarator configuration space z to which the DE method has been applied will be presented. Additionally, an accompanying effort to understand the results of this more global exploration has found that a wide range of Quasi-Axisymmetric Stellarators (QAS) previously studied fall into a small number of classes, and we obtain maps of \\chi(z) from which one can see the relative positions of these QAS, and the reasons for the classes into which they fall.

  19. Improved Design of Stellarator Coils for Current Carrying Plasmas

Phys., Prague, in print. for the design of stellarator coils consists essentially of determining filaments such that the average relative field error int dS [ (B_coil + B_j) \\cdot n]^2/B^2_coil is minimized on the prescribed plasma boundary. Bj is the magnetic field produced by the plasma currents of the given finite β fixed boundary equilibrium. For equilibria of the W7-X type, Bj can be neglected, because of the reduced parallel plasma currents. This is not true for quasi-axisymmetric stellarator (QAS) configurations (A. Reiman, et al., to be published.) with large equilibrium and net plasma (bootstrap) currents. Although the coils for QAS exhibit low values of the field error, free boundary calculations indicate that the shape of the plasma is usually not accurately reproduced , particularly when saddle coils are used. We investigate if the surface reconstruction can be improved by introducing a modified measure of the field error based on a measure of the resonant components of the normal field.

  1. Optimization of Kink Stability in High-Beta Quasi-axisymmetric Stellarators

    A key issue for design of Quasi-axisymmetric stellarators( A. Reiman et al, this conference.) (QAS) is the stability of external kink modes driven by pressure-induced bootstrap current. In this work, the 3D MHD stability code TERPSICHORE(W.A. Cooper, Phys. Plasmas 3), 275(1996). is used to calculate the stability of low-n external kink modes in a high-beta QAS. The kink stability is optimized by adjusting plasma boundary shape (i.e., external coil configuration) as well as plasma pressure and current profiles. For this purpose, the TERPSICHORE code has been implemented successfully in an optimizer which maximizes kink stability as well as quasi-symmetry. A key factor for kink stability is rotational transform profile. It is found that the edge magnetic shear is strongly stabilizing. The amount of the shear needed for complete stabilization increases with edge transform. It is also found that the plasma boundary shape plays an important role in the kink stability besides transform profile. The physics mechanisms for the kink stability are being studied by examining the contributions of individual terms in δ W of the energy principle: the field line bending term, the current-driven term, the pressure-driven term, and the vacuum term.   2. Comparison of Two Wire Model With Low MN Map

    Among the perturbations that affect the width of the stochastic layer of a single-null divertor tokamak is naturally occurring perturbations with low toroidal and poloidal mode numbers. In present day tokamaks, the n= +/- 1, m=1 Fourier component of the field error is roughly estimated to be typically of the order 10-3 times the toroidal field /1/. In this work, we analyze the features of the stochastic layer and the footprint of field lines using the Low MN Map (LMN)/2,3/. We also perform similar analysis using Rieman Two Wire Model (TWM) /1/. We then compare the results of the two approaches when the parameters of the TWM and of LMN are both 10-3. We show that the footprints from the TWM and the LMN match quantitatively and qualitatively. We compare the safety factor, Liapunov exponents, semi-connection length, and strike angles as functions of starting position of field lines in stochastic layer from the TWM and the LMN.   3. Minimizing stellarator turbulent transport by geometric optimization

    Up to now, a transport optimized stellarator has meant one optimized to minimize neoclassical transport,ootnotetextH.E. Mynick, Phys. Plasmas 13, 058102 (2006). while the task of also mitigating turbulent transport, usually the dominant transport channel in such designs, has not been addressed, due to the complexity of plasma turbulence in stellarators. However, with the advent of gyrokinetic codes valid for 3D geometries such as GENE,ootnotetextF. Jenko, W. Dorland, M. Kotschenreuther, B.N. Rogers, Phys. Plasmas 7, 1904 (2000). and stellarator optimization codes such as STELLOPT,ootnotetextA. Reiman, G. Fu, S. Hirshman, L. Ku, et al, Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 41 B273 (1999). designing stellarators to also reduce turbulent transport has become a realistic possibility. We have been using GENE to characterize the dependence of turbulent transport on stellarator geometry,ootnotetextH.E Mynick, P.A. Xanthopoulos, A.H. Boozer, Phys.Plasmas 16 110702 (2009). and to identify key geometric quantities which control the transport level. From the information obtained from these GENE studies, we are developing proxy functions which approximate the level of turbulent transport one may expect in a machine of a given geometry, and have extended STELLOPT to use these in its cost function, obtaining stellarator configurations with turbulent transport levels substantially lower than those in the original designs.

  4. Effects of RNA integrity on transcript quantification by total RNA sequencing of clinically collected human placental samples.

    RNA degradation is a ubiquitous process that occurs in living and dead cells, as well as during handling and storage of extracted RNA. Reduced RNA quality caused by degradation is an established source of uncertainty for all RNA-based gene expression quantification techniques. RNA sequencing is an increasingly preferred method for transcriptome analyses, and dependence of its results on input RNA integrity is of significant practical importance. This study aimed to characterize the effects of varying input RNA integrity [estimated as RNA integrity number (RIN)] on transcript level estimates and delineate the characteristic differences between transcripts that differ in degradation rate. The study used ribodepleted total RNA sequencing data from a real-life clinically collected set ( n = 32) of human solid tissue (placenta) samples. RIN-dependent alterations in gene expression profiles were quantified by using DESeq2 software. Our results indicate that small differences in RNA integrity affect gene expression quantification by introducing a moderate and pervasive bias in expression level estimates that significantly affected 8.1% of studied genes. The rapidly degrading transcript pool was enriched in pseudogenes, short noncoding RNAs, and transcripts with extended 3' untranslated regions. Typical slowly degrading transcripts (median length, 2389 nt) represented protein coding genes with 4-10 exons and high guanine-cytosine content.-Reiman, M., Laan, M., Rull, K., Sõber, S.   5. Finite Beta Boundary Magnetic Fields of NCSX

    The magnetic field between the plasma surface and wall of the National Compact Stellarator (NCSX), which uses quasi-symmetry to combine the best features of the tokamak and stellarator in a configuration of low aspect ratio is mapped via field line tracing in a range of finite beta in which part of the rotational transform is generated by the bootstrap current. We adopt the methodology developed for W7-X, in which an equilibrium solution is computed by an inverse equilibrium solver based on an energy minimizing variational moments code, VMEC2000[1], which solves directly for the shape of the flux surfaces given the external coils and their currents as well as a bootstrap current provided by a separate transport calculation. The VMEC solution and the Biot-Savart vacuum fields are coupled to the magnetic field solver for finite-beta equilibrium (MFBE2001)[2] code to determine the magnetic field on a 3D grid over a computational domain. It is found that the edge plasma is more stellarator-like, with a complex 3D structure, and less like the ordered 2D symmetric structure of a tokamak. The field lines make a transition from ergodically covering a surface to ergodically covering a volume, as the distance from the last closed magnetic surface is increased.   6. Stochastic layer scaling in the two-wire model for divertor tokamaks

    The question of magnetic field structure in the vicinity of the separatrix in divertor tokamaks is studied. The authors have investigated this problem earlier in a series of papers, using various mathematical techniques. In the present paper, the two-wire model (TWM) [Reiman, A. 1996 Phys. Plasmas 3, 906] is considered. It is noted that, in the TWM, it is useful to consider an extra equation expressing magnetic flux conservation. This equation does not add any more information to the TWM, since the equation is derived from the TWM. This equation is useful for controlling the step size in the numerical integration of the TWM equations. The TWM with the extra equation is called the flux-preserving TWM. Nevertheless, the technique is apparently still plagued by numerical inaccuracies when the perturbation level is low, resulting in an incorrect scaling of the stochastic layer width. The stochastic broadening of the separatrix in the flux-preserving TWM is compared with that in the low mn (poloidal mode number m and toroidal mode number n) map (LMN) [Ali, H., Punjabi, A., Boozer, A. and Evans, T. 2004 Phys. Plasmas 11, 1908]. The flux-preserving TWM and LMN both give Boozer-Rechester 0.5 power scaling of the stochastic layer width with the amplitude of magnetic perturbation when the perturbation is sufficiently large [Boozer, A. and Rechester, A. 1978, Phys. Fluids 21, 682]. The flux-preserving TWM gives a larger stochastic layer width when the perturbation is low, while the LMN gives correct scaling in the low perturbation region. Area-preserving maps such as the LMN respect the Hamiltonian structure of field line trajectories, and have the added advantage of computational efficiency. Also, for a $1\\frac12$ degree of freedom Hamiltonian system such as field lines, maps do not give Arnold diffusion.

  7. Constructing Integrable Full-pressure Full-current Free-boundary Stellarator Magnetohydrodynamic Equilibria

    For the (non-axisymmetric) stellarator class of plasma confinement devices to be feasible candidates for fusion power stations it is essential that, to a good approximation, the magnetic field lines lie on nested flux surfaces; however, the inherent lack of a continuous symmetry implies that magnetic islands are guaranteed to exist. Magnetic islands break the smooth topology of nested flux surfaces and chaotic field lines result when magnetic islands overlap. An analogous case occurs with 11/2-dimension Hamiltonian systems where resonant perturbations cause singularities in the transformation to action-angle coordinates and destroy integrability. The suppression of magnetic islands is a critical issue for stellarator design, particularly for small aspect ratio devices. Techniques for `healing' vacuum fields and fixed-boundary plasma equilibria have been developed, but what is ultimately required is a procedure for designing stellarators such that the self-consistent plasma equilibrium currents and the coil currents combine to produce an integrable magnetic field, and such a procedure is presented here for the first time. Magnetic islands in free-boundary full-pressure full-current stellarator magnetohydrodynamic equilibria are suppressed using a procedure based on the Princeton Iterative Equilibrium Solver [A.H.Reiman & H.S.Greenside, Comp. Phys. Comm., 43:157, 1986.] which iterates the equilibrium equations to obtain the plasma equilibrium. At each iteration, changes to a Fourier representation of the coil geometry are made to cancel resonant fields produced by the plasma. As the iterations continue, the coil geometry and the plasma simultaneously converge to an equilibrium in which the island content is negligible. The method is applied to a candidate plasma and coil design for the National Compact Stellarator eXperiment [G.H.Neilson et.al., Phys. Plas., 7:1911, 2000.].

Reiman, Physical Review Letters, 99, 135007 (2007)], it was shown that axisymmetric (or vertical) stability can be improved by placing a set of parallelogram coils above and below the plasma oriented at an angle to the constant toroidal planes. The physics of this stabilization can be understood as providing an effective additional positive stability index. The original work was based on a simplified model of a straight tokamak and is not straightforwardly applicable to a finite aspect ratio, strongly shaped plasma such as in DIII-D. Numerical calculations were performed to provide a proofmore » of principal that 3-D fields can, in fact raise the elongation limits as predicted, in a real DIII-D-like configuration. A four field period trapezoid-shaped coil set was developed in toroidal geometry and 3-D equilibria were computed using trapezium coil currents of ,10kA, 100kA, and 500kA. The ideal magnetohydrodynamics growth rates were computed as a function of the conformal wall position for the n=0 symmetry-preserving family. The results show an insignificant relative improvement in the stabilizing wall location for the two lower coil current cases, of the order of 10 -3 and less. In contrast, the marginal wall position is increased by 7% as the coil current is increased to 500kA, confirming the main prediction from the original study in a real geometry case. In DIII-D the shift in marginal wall position of 7% would correspond to being able to move the existing wall outward by 5 to 10 cm. While the predicted effect on the axisymmetric stability is real, it appears to require higher coil currents than could be provided in an upgrade to existing facilities. Lastly, additional optimization over the pitch of the coils, the number of field periods and the coil positions, as well as plasma parameters, such as the internal inductivity l iβ, and q 95 would mitigate this but seem unlikely to change the conclusion.« less

  10. Combinatorial Formulas for Characteristic Classes, and Localization of Secondary Topological Invariants.

    The problems solved in this thesis originated from combinatorial formulas for characteristic classes. This thesis deals with Chern-Simons classes, their generalizations and related algebraic and analytic problems. (1) In this thesis, I describe a new class of algebras whose elements contain Chern and generalized Chern -Simons classes. There is a Poisson bracket in these algebras, similar to the bracket in Kontsevich's noncommutative symplectic geometry (Kon). I prove that the Poisson bracket gives rise to a graded Lie algebra containing differential forms representing Chern and Chern-Simons classes. This is a new result. I describe algebraic analogs of the dilogarithm and higher polylogarithms in the algebra corresponding to Chern-Simons classes. (2) I study the properties of this bracket. It is possible to write the exterior differential and other operations in the algebra using this bracket. The bracket of any two Chern classes is zero and the bracket of a Chern class and a Chern-Simons class is d-closed. The construction developed here easily gives explicit formulas for known secondary classes and makes it possible to construct new ones. (3) I develop an algebraic model for the action of the gauge group and describe how elements of algebra corresponding to the secondary characteristic classes change under this action (see theorem 3 page xi). (4) It is possible give new explicit formulas for cocycles on a gauge group of a bundle and for the corresponding cocycles on the Lie algebra of the gauge group. I use formulas for secondary characteristic classes and an algebraic approach developed in chapter 1. I also use the work of Faddeev, Reiman and Semyonov-Tian-Shanskii (FRS) on cocycles as quantum anomalies. (5) I apply the methods of differential geometry of formal power series to construct universal characteristic and secondary characteristic classes.   13. MHD Stability in Compact Stellarators

    A key issue for current carrying compact stellarators(S.P. Hirshman et al., "Physics of compact stellarators", Phys. Plasmas 6, 1858 (1999).) is the stability of ideal MHD modes. We present recent stability results of external kink modes, ballooning mode, and vertical modes in Quasi-axisymmetric Stellarators (QAS)( A. Reiman et al, "Physics issue in the design of a high beta Quasi-Axisymmetric Stellarator" the 17th IAEA Fusion Energy conference, (Yokohama, Japan, October 1998), Paper ICP/06.) as well as Quasi-Omnigeneous Stellarators (QOS)^2. The 3D stability code Terpsichore(W. A. Cooper et al., Phys. Plasmas 3, 275 (1996)) is used in this study. The vertical stability in a current carrying stellarator is studied for the first time. The vertical mode is found to be stabilized by externally generated poloidal flux(G.Y. Fu et al., "Stability of vertical mode in a current carrying stellarator"., to be submitted). Physically, this is because the external poloidal flux enhances the field line bending energy relative to the current drive term in the MHD energy principle, δ W. A simple stability criteria is derived in the limit of large aspect ratio and constant current density. For wall at infinite distance from the plasma, the amount of external flux needed for stabilization is given by f=(κ^2-κ)/(κ^2+1) where κ is the axisymmetric elongation and f is the fraction of the external rotational transform at the plasma edge. A systematic parameter study shows that the external kink in QAS can be stabilized at high beta ( ~ 5%) without a conducting wall by combination of edge magnetic shear and 3D shaping(G. Y. Fu et al., "MHD stability calculations of high-beta Quasi-Axisymmetric Stellarators", the 17th IAEA Fusion Energy conference, (Yokohama, Japan, October 1998), paper THP1/07.).
