Visualizing Elections Using Saari Triangles

Using an auditory adaptation of the emotional and taboo Stroop tasks, the authors compared the effects of negative and taboo spoken words in mixed and blocked designs. Both types of words elicited carryover effects with mixed presentations and interference with blocked presentations, suggesting similar long-lasting attentional effects. Both were also relatively resilient to the long-lasting influence of the preceding emotional word. Hence, contrary to what has been assumed (Schmidt & Saari, 2007), negative and taboo words do not seem to differ in terms of the temporal dynamics of the interdimensional shifting, at least in the auditory modality. On the n-body problem on surfaces of revolution

We explore the n-body problem, n ≥ 3, on a surface of revolution with a general interaction depending on the pairwise geodesic distance. Using the geometric methods of classical mechanics we determine a large set of properties. In particular, we show that Saari's conjecture fails on surfaces of revolution admitting a geodesic circle. We define homographic motions and, using the discrete symmetries, prove that when the masses are equal, they form an invariant manifold. On this manifold the dynamics are reducible to a one-degree of freedom system. We also find that for attractive interactions, regular n-gon shaped relative equilibria with trajectories located on geodesic circles typically experience a pitchfork bifurcation. Some applications are included.

The importance of H2O on the lunar surface has long been identified as a high priority for the existence of a human colony for mining activities and, more recently, for space fuel. Using the Earth as an analog, volcanic activity would suggest the generation of water during lunar history. Evidence of volcanism is found not only in present lunar morphology, but in over 400 locations of lunar transient events cataloged by Middlehurst and Kuiper in the 1960's. These events consisted of sightings since early history of vapor emissions and bright spots or flares. Later infrared scanning by Saari and Shorthill showed 'hot spots', many of which coincided with transient event sites. Many of the locations of Middlehurst and Kuiper were the sites of repeat events, leading to the conclusion that these were possibly volcanic in nature. The detection and use of H2O from the lunar surface is discussed.

Larval fathead minnow swim bladder inflation following exposure to 2-mercaptobenzothiazole
In this study, a hypothesized adverse outcome pathway (AOP) linking inhibition of thyroid peroxidase (TPO) activity to impaired swim bladder inflation was investigated in experiments in which fathead minnows were exposed to the TPO inhibitor 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT). Results show that anterior, but not posterior, swim bladder inflation was impacted by exposure to MBT supporting the development of an AOP linking a specific thyroid-disrupting molecular initiating event to a significant phenotypic outcome. Results also suggest an alternative short-term in vivo test with larval fathead minnows that could be used to screen chemicals for thyroid disrupting activity and possibly distinguish thyroid disrupting modes of action. The accurate determination of the quality parameters of crops requires a spectral range from 400 nm to 2500 nm (Kawamura et al., 2010, Thenkabail et al., 2002). Presently the hyperspectral imaging systems that cover this wavelength range consist of several separate hyperspectral imagers and the system weight is from 5 to 15 kg. In addition the cost of the Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) cameras is high ( 50 k€). VTT has previously developed compact hyperspectral imagers for drones and Cubesats for Visible and Very near Infrared (VNIR) spectral ranges (Saari et al., 2013, Mannila et al., 2013, Näsilä et al., 2016). Recently VTT has started to develop a hyperspectral imaging system that will enable imaging simultaneously in the Visible, VNIR, and SWIR spectral bands. The system can be operated from a drone, on a camera stand, or attached to a tractor. The targeted main applications of the DroneKnowledge hyperspectral system are grass, peas, and cereals. In this paper the characteristics of the built system are shortly described. The system was used for spectral measurements of wheat, several grass species and pea plants fixed to the camera mount in the test fields in Southern Finland and in the green house. The wheat, grass and pea field measurements were also carried out using the system mounted on the tractor. The work is part of the Finnish nationally funded DroneKnowledge - Towards knowledge based export of small UAS remote sensing technology project.

an increasing trend over time but also greater fluctuations, especially during peak opening seasons. Outside these seasons, publications in the media coincide with Health Library article openings only occasionally. Lyme disease-related information-seeking behaviors between the general public and HCPs from Internet medical portals share similar temporal variations, which is consistent with the trend seen in epidemiological data. Therefore, the general public's article openings could be used as a supplementary source of information for disease surveillance. The fluctuations in article openings appeared stronger among the general public, thus, suggesting that different factors such as media coverage, affect the information-seeking behaviors of the public versus professionals. However, media coverage may also have an influence on HCPs. during the year 2016. A short period of data was also analysed with respect to the emissions of individual vehicles by using a recorded video of the traffic fleet. As an example of the vertical profiles, Figure 1 shows the LDSA concentration as a function of the altitude. The data measured with a time resolution of one second is seen along with the values averaged for different altitude intervals. The effect of wind conditions and changes in the traffic fleet on the concentration profiles could be analysed. In addition to the vertical profiles, we were able to analyse the LDSA concentrations on the ground level with respect to long-term averages and rapid changes caused by different individual vehicles. This work was conducted in two different research projects.
