  1. Shoichi Sakata: His Life and Physics ---Collections of Materials in Sakata Memorial Archival Library---

    Shoichi Sakata and his Nagoya School made a lot of important achievements at the predawn of the particle physics revolution. The ``two-meson'' theory (introduction of the second generation leptons), the ``C-meson theory'' (a theory which inspired Tomonaga's renormalization theory), the ``Sakata model'' (a precursor to the quark model), and the ``Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata'' theory on the neutrino mixings are among them. These outputs are now regarded as essential ingredients in modern particle physics. Sakata also took his leadership in setting up democratic administration system in his theoretical particle physics group (E-ken). It was this democratic atmosphere in which many excellent physicists were brought up as Sakata's diciples. In this talk, I introduce Sakata and his achievements in physics, showing various materials archived in the Sakata Memorial Archival Library (SMAL), an archival repository of primary material showing Sakata's activities. These SMAL documents vividly show Sakata's way of thinking in his approach to the new physics.

  2. H I-to-H2 Transition Layers in the Star-forming Region W43

    The process of atomic-to-molecular (H I-to-H2) gas conversion is fundamental for molecular-cloud formation and star formation. 21 cm observations of the star-forming region W43 revealed extremely high H I column densities, of 120-180 {M}⊙ {{pc}}-2, a factor of 10-20 larger than predicted by H I-to-H2 transition theories. We analyze the observed H I with a theoretical model of the H I-to-H2 transition, and show that the discrepancy between theory and observation cannot be explained by the intense radiation in W43, nor be explained by variations of the assumed volume density or H2 formation rate coefficient. We show that the large observed H I columns are naturally explained by several (9-22) H I-to-H2 transition layers, superimposed along the sightlines of W43. We discuss other possible interpretations such as a non-steady-state scenario and inefficient dust absorption. The case of W43 suggests that H I thresholds reported in extragalactic observations are probably not associated with a single H I-to-H2 transition, but are rather a result of several transition layers (clouds) along the sightlines, beam-diluted with diffuse intercloud gas.

  3. Weight control in schizophrenic patients through Sakata's Charting of Daily Weight Pattern and its associations with temperament and character.

    This study examined whether daily self-monitoring of weight and monthly interviews with a doctor improved eating habits and led to weight loss, and whether temperament and character traits affect weight change in persons with schizophrenia. Participants used Sakata's Charting of Daily Weight Pattern to monitor their weight daily. In addition, Sakata's Eating Behavior Questionnaire was administered to evaluate eating-behavior awareness. The Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) was used to assess participants' temperament and character. Fifty patients were divided into two groups: the intervention group (n = 25) filled in Sakata's Charting of Daily Weight Pattern every day; was interviewed monthly by a doctor about weight management; was weighed monthly. The non-intervention group (n = 25) was only weighed monthly. The body mass index (mean ± standard error: 0.59 ± 0.10 kg/m(2), p < 0.001) of the intervention group decreased significantly while their scores on Sakata's Eating Behavior Questionnaire significantly improved albeit marginally. Conversely, body mass index increased significantly (0.66 ± 0.18 kg/m(2), p < 0.001) in the non-intervention group, whose scores on Sakata's Eating Behavior Questionnaire did not change significantly. Weight change and TCI scores were not correlated for the intervention group, but scores for "self-directedness" and weight gain in the non-intervention group had a marginally significant negative correlation (r = -0.33, p < 0.10). Our results suggest that monitoring one's weight daily on Sakata's Charting of Daily Weight Pattern led to improvements in eating behavior and a decrease in BMI of patients with schizophrenia.   4. Analytic H I-to-H2 Photodissociation Transition Profiles

    We present a simple analytic procedure for generating atomic (H I) to molecular ({{{H}}}2) density profiles for optically thick hydrogen gas clouds illuminated by far-ultraviolet radiation fields. Our procedure is based on the analytic theory for the structure of one-dimensional H I/{{{H}}}2 photon-dominated regions, presented by Sternberg et al. Depth-dependent atomic and molecular density fractions may be computed for arbitrary gas density, far-ultraviolet field intensity, and the metallicity-dependent H2 formation rate coefficient, and dust absorption cross section in the Lyman-Werner photodissociation band. We use our procedure to generate a set of {{H}} {{I}}{-}{to}{-}{{{H}}}2 transition profiles for a wide range of conditions, from the weak- to strong-field limits, and from super-solar down to low metallicities. We show that if presented as functions of dust optical depth, the {{H}} {{I}} and {{{H}}}2 density profiles depend primarily on the Sternberg “α G parameter” (dimensionless) that determines the dust optical depth associated with the total photodissociated {{H}} {{I}} column. We derive a universal analytic formula for the {{H}} {{I}}{-}{to}{-}{{{H}}}2 transition points as a function of just α G. Our formula will be useful for interpreting emission-line observations of H I/{{{H}}}2 interfaces, for estimating star formation thresholds, and for sub-grid components in hydrodynamics simulations.

  5. Dependence of the quark-lepton complementarity on parametrizations of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa and Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrices

    The quark-lepton complementarity (QLC) is very suggestive in understanding possible relations between quark and lepton mixing matrices. We explore the QLC relations in all the possible angle-phase parametrizations and point out that they can approximately hold in five parametrizations. Furthermore, the vanishing of the smallest mixing angles in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa and Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrices can make sure that the QLC relations exactly hold in those five parametrizations. Finally, the sensitivity of the QLC relations to radiative corrections is also discussed.

  6. Sakata-Taketani spin-0 theory with external field interactions - Lagrangian formalism and causal properties

    To illustrate that a relativistic field theory need not be manifestly covariant, Lorentz-invariant Lagrangian densities are constructed that yield the equation satisfied by an interacting (two-component) Sakata-Taketani spin-0 field. Six types of external field couplings are considered, two scalars, two vectors, an antisymmetric second-rank tensor, and a symmetric second-rank tensor, with the results specialized to electromagnetic interactions. For either of the two second-rank couplings, the equation is found to describe noncausal wave propagation, a property that is apparent from the dependence of the coefficients of the space derivatives on the external field; in contrast, the noncausality of the corresponding manifestly covariant Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau spin-0 equation is not so obvious. The possibilities for generalizing the results to higher spin theories involving only the essential 2(2J + 1) components for a particle with a definite spin J and mass m are discussed in considerable detail.

  7. HI-to-H2 Transitions in the Perseus Molecular Cloud

    We use the Sternberg et al. theory for interstellar atomic to molecular hydrogen (H i-to-H2) conversion to analyze H i-to-H2 transitions in five (low-mass) star-forming and dark regions in the Perseus molecular cloud, B1, B1E, B5, IC348, and NGC1333. The observed H i mass surface densities of 6.3-9.2 {M}⊙ {{pc}}-2 are consistent with H i-to-H2 transitions dominated by H i-dust shielding in predominantly atomic envelopes. For each source, we constrain the dimensionless parameter α G, and the ratio {I}{UV}/n, of the FUV intensity to hydrogen gas density. We find α G values from 5.0 to 26.1, implying characteristic atomic hydrogen densities 11.8-1.8 cm-3, for {I}{UV}≈ 1 appropriate for Perseus. Our analysis implies that the dusty H i shielding layers are probably multiphased, with thermally unstable UNM gas in addition to cold CNM within the 21 cm kinematic radius.

    We present stellar evolutionary calculations for models with stellar masses ranging from 1.2 to 20 Msolar. We follow the calculations from the Main Sequence up to the phase of thermal pulses. The emphasis is placed mainly on the analysis of the behaviour of a 5 Msolar model. The evolutionary code is based on the Kippenhahn, Weigert, & Hofmeister (1967) method to compute stellar evolution. The structure and stellar evolution equations for the stellar interior are integrated using the standard Henyey method. The degree of superadiabaticity is computed from the mixing length theory of convection (Böhm - Vitense 1958). The equation of state we employed takes into account partial ionization, radiation pressure and relativistic degeneracy for electrons at finite temperature. Radiative opacities with metallicity Z=0.02 are taken from Rogers & Iglesias (1996). Conductive opacities for the low - density regime are from the fits of Iben (1975) to the calculations of Hubbard & Lampe (1969). For higher densities we use the results of Itoh et. al (1983). The molecular opacities are those of Alexander & Ferguson (1994). The different mechanisms of neutrino emission are also taken account. In particular, photo and pair neutrinos are from Itoh et al. (1989); plasma neutrinos from Itoh et al. (1989) and Bremsstrahlung from Itoh et al. (1992). Because the aim in this work has been to calculate the stages corresponding to the thermal pulses, particular attention has been devoted to the treatment of the numerical difficulties appearing in this kind of calculation. To this end, we solve the equations describing the structure and evolution of a star in terms of differences with respect to time, instead of iterating the value of the physical variables directly. This change has allowed us to calculate advanced evolutionary stages such as the thermal pulses. In this regard, we find that our models experiencies up to 10 thermal flashes.

    We study the effect of density fluctuations induced by turbulence on the H I/H2 structure in photodissociation regions (PDRs) both analytically and numerically. We perform magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulations for both subsonic and supersonic turbulent gas and chemical H I/H2 balance calculations. We derive atomic-to-molecular density profiles and the H I column density probability density function (PDF) assuming chemical equilibrium. We find that, while the H I/H2 density profiles are strongly perturbed in turbulent gas, the mean H I column density is well approximated by the uniform-density analytic formula of Sternberg et al. The PDF width depends on (a) the radiation intensity-to-mean density ratio, (b) the sonic Mach number, and (c) the turbulence decorrelation scale, or driving scale. We derive an analytic model for the H I PDF and demonstrate how our model, combined with 21 cm observations, can be used to constrain the Mach number and driving scale of turbulent gas. As an example, we apply our model to observations of H I in the Perseus molecular cloud. We show that a narrow observed H I PDF may imply small-scale decorrelation, pointing to the potential importance of subcloud-scale turbulence driving.

    The estimation of angular time series data is a widespread issue relating to various situations involving rotational motion and moving objects. There are two kinds of problem settings: the estimation of wrapped angles, which are principal values in a circular coordinate system (e.g., the direction of an object), and the estimation of unwrapped angles in an unbounded coordinate system such as for the positioning and tracking of moving objects measured by the signal-wave phase. Wrapped angles have been estimated in previous studies by sequential Bayesian filtering; however, the hyperparameters that are to be solved and that control the properties of the estimation model were given a priori. The present study establishes a procedure of hyperparameter estimation from the observation data of angles only, using the framework of Bayesian inference completely as the maximum likelihood estimation. Moreover, the filter model is modified to estimate the unwrapped angles. It is proved that without noise our model reduces to the existing algorithm of Itoh's unwrapping transform. It is numerically confirmed that our model is an extension of unwrapping estimation from Itoh's unwrapping transform to the case with noise.

  19. Fundamental Scalings of Zonal Flows in a Basic Plasma Physics Experiment

    A basic physics experimental study of zonal flows (ZF) associated with ITG (ion temperature gradient) drift modes has been performed in the Columbia Linear Machine (CLM) and ZF has been definitively identified [1]. However, in contrast to most tokamak experiments, the stabilizing effect of ZF shear to ITG appears to be small in CLM. We now report on the study of important scaling behavior of ZF. First and most importantly, we report on the collisional damping scaling of ZF, which is considered to be its saturation mechanism [2]. By varying the sum of ion-ion and ion-neutral collision frequency over nearly half an order of magnitude, we find no change in the amplitude of ZF. Secondly, we study the scaling of ZF amplitude with ITG amplitude via increasing ITG drive though ηi, as well as feedback (stabilizing / destabilizing).     From the analysis of UV/Vis absorption spectra, emission and excitation emission spectra of solutions of all-trans-1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) in carbon disulfide (CS 2 ) within a wide range of temperatures, we can conclude that these spectra do not support the inversion of excited electronic states in DPH by an increased polarizability of the solvent as proposed by Kohler and Itoh. The proposal by Kohler and Itoh is widely accepted as an elegant demonstration of the inversion of the 1 1 Bu and 2 1 Ag states in the polyene DPH by a mere increase in the solvent polarizability. The evidence provided in this paper confirms, as has recently been proposed, that a ghost state as the first electronic state, 2 1 Ag, is not necessary to explain the photophysics of DPH. The photophysics of DPH is plausibly explicable with the 1 1 Bu state, which is directly excitable by photonic absorption from the fundamental electronic state of the compound. In this paper, we provide evidence that the UV/Vis spectra of DPH in CS 2 at 77 K are most likely generated from a molecular structure of DPH constrained by solid CS 2 , which is clearly distinct from that present in liquid CS 2 .

    We discuss aspects of the theory of non-invertible transformations of differential-difference equations and, in particular, the notion of Miura type transformation. We introduce the concept of non-Miura type linearizable transformation and we present techniques that allow one to construct simple linearizable transformations and might help one to solve classification problems. This theory is illustrated by the example of a new integrable differential-difference equation depending on five lattice points, interesting from the viewpoint of the non-invertible transformation, which relate it to an Itoh-Narita-Bogoyavlensky equation.

    The evolution of ribosomal proteins of about 70 bacterial strains belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae has been studied by use of previously reported data (S. Osawa, T. Itoh, and E. Otaka, J. Bacteriol. 107:168-178, 1971) and those obtained in this paper. The proximity of the bacteria was quantified by co-chromatographing the differentially labeled ribosomal proteins from two strains on a column of carboxymethyl cellulose in various combinations.     The 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake (Mw 8.0) is an interplate earthquake along the Kurile trench. Its co- and post-seismic deformation has been observed by onland GNSS [e.g., Miyazaki et al. 2004] and modeled with afterslip and/or viscoelastic relaxation [e.g., Itoh and Nishimura 2016]. In the offshore region, two ocean bottom pressure gauges (OBPs) are operated by JAMSTEC since July 1999 [Hirata et al. 2002] and they have continuously observed the pre-, co- and post-seismic pressure change of the 2003 event [Baba et al. 2006]. The observed pressure change can be interpreted as vertical displacement, and the resolution of slip beneath the seafloor far from the land was improved by incorporating these pressure data into onland GNSS data [Baba et al. 2006]. However, no previous studies used postseismic pressure data for several years to estimate an interplate slip. Because, in this region, an M8 class event similar to the 2003 event has occurred in 1952, it is important to clarify a healing process of an interplate coupling which may lead to a next M8 class event in terms of the earthquake cycle. Itoh and Nishimura [2017, JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting] estimated it but used only onland GNSS data. In this study, we use both onland GNSS and OBP data. For OBP data analysis, we first removed the tidal component using BAYTAP08 [Tamura et al. 1991; Tamura and Agnew 2008]. Next, we corrected the temporal fluctuation of data correlating with temperature [Baba et al. 2006]. We estimated the linear trend before the 2003 event using the corrected time series from 2002 Jan. 1 to 2003 Sep. 1 and remove the estimated trend from the data after the 2003 event. Here, we assumed a non-linear drift could be ignored. Finally, we down-sampled the remained time series with an interval of 1 month. For the onland GNSS data, we used the same data set of Itoh and Nishimura [2017, JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting].   1. Self-dual geometry of generalized Hermitian surfaces

    Several results on the geometry of conformally semiflat Hermitian surfaces of both classical and hyperbolic types (generalized Hermitian surfaces) are obtained. Some of these results are generalizations and clarifications of already known results in this direction due to Koda, Itoh, and other authors. They reveal some unexpected beautiful connections between such classical characteristics of conformally semiflat (generalized) Hermitian surfaces as the Einstein property, the constancy of the holomorphic sectional curvature, and so on. A complete classification of compact self-dual Hermitian RK-surfaces that are at the same time generalized Hopf manifolds is obtained. This provides a complete solution of the Chen problem in this class of Hermitian surfaces.

  2. The exponential parameterization of the neutrino mixing matrix as an SU(3) group element and an account for new experimental data

    The exponential form of the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata mixing matrix for neutrinos is considered in the context of the fundamental representation of the SU(3) group. The logarithm of the mixing matrix is obtained. Based on the most recent experimental data on neutrino mixing, the exact values of the entries of the exponential matrix are calculated. The exact values for its real and imaginary parts are determined, respectively, in charge of the mixing without CP violation and of the pure CP violation effect. The hypothesis of complementarity for quarks and neutrinos is confirmed. The factorization of the exponential mixing matrix, which allows the separation of the mixing and of the CP violation itself in the form of the product of rotations around the real and imaginary axes, is demonstrated.

  3. Crystal Structures of Copper-depleted and Copper-bound Fungal Pro-tyrosinase

    Tyrosinase, a dinuclear copper monooxygenase/oxidase, plays a crucial role in the melanin pigment biosynthesis. The structure and functions of tyrosinase have so far been studied extensively, but the post-translational maturation process from the pro-form to the active form has been less explored. In this study, we provide the crystal structures of Aspergillus oryzae full-length pro-tyrosinase in the holo- and the apo-forms at 1.39 and 2.05 Å resolution, respectively, revealing that Phe513 on the C-terminal domain is accommodated in the substrate-binding site as a substrate analog to protect the dicopper active site from substrate access (proteolytic cleavage of the C-terminal domain or deformation of the C-terminal domain by acid treatment transforms the pro-tyrosinase to the active enzyme (Fujieda, N., Murata, M., Yabuta, S., Ikeda, T., Shimokawa, C., Nakamura, Y., Hata, Y., and Itoh, S. (2012) ChemBioChem. 13, 193–201 and Fujieda, N., Murata, M., Yabuta, S., Ikeda, T., Shimokawa, C., Nakamura, Y., Hata, Yl, and Itoh, S. (2013) J. Biol. Inorg. Chem. 18, 19–26). Detailed crystallographic analysis and structure-based mutational studies have shown that the copper incorporation into the active site is governed by three cysteines as follows: Cys92, which is covalently bound to His94 via an unusual thioether linkage in the holo-form, and Cys522 and Cys525 of the CXXC motif located on the C-terminal domain. Molecular mechanisms of the maturation processes of fungal tyrosinase involving the accommodation of the dinuclear copper unit, the post-translational His-Cys thioether cross-linkage formation, and the proteolytic C-terminal cleavage to produce the active tyrosinase have been discussed on the basis of the detailed structural information.   4. From H I to Stars: H I Depletion in Starbursts and Star-forming Galaxies in the ALFALFA Hα Survey

    H i in galaxies traces the fuel for future star formation and reveals the effects of feedback on neutral gas. Using a statistically uniform, H i-selected sample of 565 galaxies from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) Hα survey, we explore H i properties as a function of star formation activity. ALFALFA Hα provides R-band and Hα imaging for a volume-limited subset of the 21 cm ALFALFA survey. We identify eight starbursts based on Hα equivalent width and six with enhanced star formation relative to the main sequence. Both starbursts and non-starbursts have similar H i-to-stellar mass ratios ({M}{{H} {{I}}}/{M}*), which suggests that feedback is not depleting the starbursts’ H i. Consequently, the starbursts do have shorter H i depletion times ({t}{dep}), implying more efficient H i-to-H2 conversion. While major mergers likely drive this enhanced efficiency in some starbursts, the lowest-mass starbursts may experience periodic bursts, consistent with enhanced scatter in {t}{dep} at low {M}*. Two starbursts appear to be pre-coalescence mergers; their elevated {M}{{H} {{I}}}/{M}* suggest that H i-to-H2 conversion is still ongoing at this stage. By comparing with the GASS sample, we find that {t}{dep} anticorrelates with stellar surface density for disks, while spheroids show no such trend. Among early-type galaxies, {t}{dep} does not correlate with bulge-to-disk ratio; instead, the gas distribution may determine the star formation efficiency. Finally, the weak connection between galaxies’ specific star formation rates and {M}{{H} {{I}}}/{M}* contrasts with the well-known correlation between {M}{{H} {{I}}}/{M}* and color. We show that dust extinction can explain the H i-color trend, which may arise from the relationship between {M}*, {M}{{H} {{I}}}, and metallicity.

  5. Theoretical transport modeling of Ohmic cold pulse experiments

    The response of several theory-based transport models in Ohmically heated tokamak discharges to rapid edge cooling due to trace impurity injection is studied. Results are presented for the Institute for Fusion Studies—Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (IFS/PPPL), gyro-Landau-fluid (GLF23), Multi-mode (MM), and the Itoh-Itoh-Fukuyama (IIF) transport models with an emphasis on results from the Texas Experimental Tokamak (TEXT) [K. W. Gentle, Nucl. Technol./Fusion 1, 479 (1981)]. It is found that critical gradient models containing a strong ion and electron temperature ratio dependence can exhibit behavior that is qualitatively consistent with experimental observation while depending solely on local parameters. The IFS/PPPL model yields the strongest response and demonstrates both rapid radial pulse propagation and a noticeable increase in the central electron temperature following a cold edge temperature pulse (amplitude reversal). Furthermore, the amplitude reversal effect is predicted to diminish with increasing electron density and auxiliary heating in agreement with experimental data. An Ohmic pulse heating effect due to rearrangement of the current profile is shown to contribute to the rise in the core electron temperature in TEXT, but not in the Joint European Tokamak (JET) [A. Tanga and the JET Team, in Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1986 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1987), Vol. 1, p. 65] and the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [R. J. Hawryluk, V. Arunsalam, M. G. Bell et al., in Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1986 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1987), Vol. 1, p. 51]. While this phenomenon is not necessarily a unique signature of a critical gradient, there is sufficient evidence suggesting that the apparent plasma response to edge cooling may not require any underlying nonlocal mechanism and may be explained within the context of the intrinsic properties of electrostatic drift

  7. Electron screening and its effects on big-bang nucleosynthesis

    We study the effects of electron screening on nuclear reaction rates occurring during the big-bang nucleosynthesis epoch. The sensitivity of the predicted elemental abundances on electron screening is studied in detail. It is shown that electron screening does not produce noticeable results in the abundances unless the traditional Debye-Hueckel model for the treatment of electron screening in stellar environments is enhanced by several orders of magnitude. This work rules out electron screening as a relevant ingredient to big-bang nucleosynthesis, confirming a previous study [see Itoh et al., Astrophys. J. 488, 507 (1997)] and ruling out exotic possibilities for the treatmentmore » of screening beyond the mean-field theoretical approach.« less

  8. Minimal modification of tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing and leptonic CP violation

    We confront possible forms of the minimal modification of the tri-bimaximal (TBM) neutrino mixing matrix proposed by Kang and Kim (Phys. Rev. D 90, 077301 (2014)) with the latest global fit to neutrino data. One form among them is singled out by the current experimental results at 1σ confidence level (C.L.) The minimal modification of the TBM mixing matrix makes possible the prediction of Dirac-type CP phase in the Pontecorbo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata neutrino mixing matrix in terms of two neutrino mixing angles. By carrying out a numerical analysis based on the latest experimental results for neutrino mixing angles, we are able to present new results on the prediction of the Dirac-type CP phase. We also compare our results on CP violation with those from the current global fit at 1 σ C.L.

    Under well-established culture conditions, Pseudomonas reptilivora produced several antibiotics that have been purified by solvent extraction, chromatography in Sephadex G-25, electrophoresis, and paper chromatography in different solvent systems. Activity has been monitored at the different steps of isolation and purification by measurement of the inhibition of the growth of Staphylococcus aureus by the cylinder-plate method, as well as by bioautography of chromatograms and electropherograms. Three antibiotics have been isolated and named A, B1, and B2. The B1 and B2 activities were studied in greater detail than A. The B1 substance was crystallized, and its chemical properties were found to coincide with those of YC 73 or fluopsin C described by Egawa et al. and Itoh et al., respectively. Images PMID:4790558

    metastable a-and b-BaTi2 O5 are constructed with non-centrosymmetric geometry TiO5 polyhedra, which provides higher potential for yielding high dielectric constants, pyroelectric and nonlinear op-tical properties than that of normal 4-or 6-coordinate Ti-O polyhedra. In addition, all lanthanide elements can be doped into the unusual glassy BaTi2 O5 structure to open up new possibilities for creating new bulk glasses, metastable phases and nano-crystalline ceramics with peculiar electronic and optical properties, such as giant permittivity and strong upconversion luminescence.     Here, we report results of a search for oscillations involving a light sterile neutrino over distances of 1.04 and 735 km in a ν μ-dominated beam with a peak energy of 3 GeV. The data, from an exposure of 10.56 × 10 20 protons on target, are analyzed using a phenomenological model with one sterile neutrino. We constrain the mixing parameters θ 24 and Δm 41 2 and set limits on parameters of the four-dimensional Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix, |U μ4| 2 and |U τ4| 2, under the assumption that mixing between νe and νs is negligible (|U e4| 2=0). No evidence for νmore » μ → ν s transitions is found and we set a world-leading limit on θ 24 for values of Δm 41 2 ≲ 1 eV 2.« less

  12. Neutrino and C P -even Higgs boson masses in a nonuniversal U (1 )' extension

    We propose a new anomaly-free and family nonuniversal U (1 )' extension of the standard model with the addition of two scalar singlets and a new scalar doublet. The quark sector is extended by adding three exotic quark singlets, while the lepton sector includes two exotic charged lepton singlets, three right-handed neutrinos, and three sterile Majorana leptons to obtain the fermionic mass spectrum of the standard model. The lepton sector also reproduces the elements of the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) matrix and the squared-mass differences data from neutrino oscillation experiments. Also, analytical relations of the PMNS matrix are derived via the inverse seesaw mechanism, and numerical predictions of the parameters in both normal and inverse order scheme for the mass of the phenomenological neutrinos are obtained. We employed a simple seesawlike method to obtain analytical mass eigenstates of the C P -even 3 ×3 mass matrix of the scalar sector.

  13. Miura-type transformations for lattice equations and Lie group actions associated with Darboux-Lax representations

    Miura-type transformations (MTs) are an essential tool in the theory of integrable nonlinear partial differential and difference equations. We present a geometric method to construct MTs for differential-difference (lattice) equations from Darboux-Lax representations (DLRs) of such equations. The method is applicable to parameter-dependent DLRs satisfying certain conditions. We construct MTs and modified lattice equations from invariants of some Lie group actions on manifolds associated with such DLRs. Using this construction, from a given suitable DLR one can obtain many MTs of different orders. The main idea behind this method is closely related to the results of Drinfeld and Sokolov on MTs for the partial differential KdV equation.   14. Leptonic CP phase determined by an equation involving PMNS matrix elements

    Several approximate equalities among the matrix elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) and Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) matrices imply that hidden symmetries may exist and be common for both quark and neutrino sectors. The charge parity (CP) phase of the CKM matrix ({δ }{CKM}) is involved in these equalities and can be investigated when these equalities turn into several equations. As we substitute those experimentally measured values of the three mixing angles into the equations for quarks, it is noted that one of the equations which holds exactly has a solution {δ }{CKM}=({68.95}-1.15+1.15)^\\circ . That value accords with ({69.1}-3.85+2.02)^\\circ determined from available data. Generalizing the scenario to the lepton sector, the same equality determines the leptonic CP phase {δ }{PMNS} to be ({275.20}-1.15+1.15)^\\circ . Thus we predict the value of {δ }{PMNS} from the equation. So far there is no direct measurement on {δ }{PMNS}, but a recent analysis based on the neutrino oscillation data prefers a phase close to 270°.

  16. Characteristics of earthquake-induced turbidites in Beppu Bay, southwest Japan

    Beppu Bay is located at the western end of the arc-bisecting dextral fault (Median Tectonic Line) associated with the northwestward subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate. According to Itoh et al. (1998) and Itoh et al. (2014), the process of formation of the bay was divided into two stages. The older stage (5 to 1.5 Ma) was dominated by a northward-inclined half-graben, while a pull-apart stress resulting from the right-stepping of the MTL developed during the younger stage (1.5 Ma to present in particular, 0.7 Ma to present), so seamless sediments were clearly preserved in the bay. Recently, Kuwae et al. (2012) revealed that the hemipelagic sediments accompanied with some event layers (18 major event layers (> 1 cm thick) and 55 minor event layers (< 1 cm thick)) were deposited. The core was well dated based on AMS 14C ages of 42 bivalves. In this study, we investigated the lithology of the event layers to understand how the layers were deposited. As a result, major event layers are classified into five types based on difference in the grain composition and facies: turbidites (type A-C), tephras (type D), and others (type E). Type A (4 layers) is thick event layers with a basal sand division, middle laminated silt division, and upper clay division. Relatively heavy particles, such as minerals, are concentrated in the basal division with clear erosion. Type B (7 layers) is similar to type A, but lack the basal division. Type C (5 layers) is almost the same as type B, but contains gypsum. Type D (2 layers) consists of a large amount of volcanic glass without bottom erosion. Type E (1 layer) is different from all other types and distinguishes by black color coarse particles and relatively high magnetic susceptibility. In particular, type A event layers are deposited in 334, 617, 1685, and 1893 cal. yrs BP using our age-depth model.   17. On Discontinuous Piecewise Linear Models for Memristor Oscillators

    In this paper, we provide for the first time rigorous mathematical results regarding the rich dynamics of piecewise linear memristor oscillators. In particular, for each nonlinear oscillator given in [Itoh & Chua, 2008], we show the existence of an infinite family of invariant manifolds and that the dynamics on such manifolds can be modeled without resorting to discontinuous models. Our approach provides topologically equivalent continuous models with one dimension less but with one extra parameter associated to the initial conditions. It is possible to justify the periodic behavior exhibited by three-dimensional memristor oscillators, by taking advantage of known results for planar continuous piecewise linear systems. The analysis developed not only confirms the numerical results contained in previous works [Messias et al., 2010; Scarabello & Messias, 2014] but also goes much further by showing the existence of closed surfaces in the state space which are foliated by periodic orbits. The important role of initial conditions that justify the infinite number of periodic orbits exhibited by these models, is stressed. The possibility of unsuspected bistable regimes under specific configurations of parameters is also emphasized.

  19. Manifestation of Nonuniversality of Lepton Interactions in Spontaneously Violated Mirror Symmetry

    Data from the LHCb experiments are indicative of a substantial distinction between the B → K (or K*) + e + e - and B → K (or K*) + μ + μ - branching ratios (April 2017). The branching ratio for the e+e- channel is substantially greater than that for the μ + μ - channel, whereas Standard Model (SM) calculations require that they be equal to each other. The above distinction may suggest the existence of a new interaction changing generations and discriminating between leptons that has couplings that are much greater than and are inverse in strength to the SM fermion couplings to the Higgs boson. Under conditions of spontaneously violated mirror symmetry, the coupling of SM particles to the second Higgs scalar that is inevitably present there and which is in principle heavy possesses precisely these properties. An inverse character of this coupling and its strength are not an additional hypothesis but a necessary condition for qualitatively reproducing, in addition, the observed charged-lepton mass hierarchy and the structure of weak lepton mixing—the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) matrix. Within the mirror model being considered, all properties of the new interaction, including its inverse character, are due to the hierarchical character of the quark and charged-lepton mass spectrum.

  20. Prediction on neutrino Dirac and Majorana phases and absolute mass scale from the CKM matrix

    In the type-I seesaw model, the lepton-flavor-mixing matrix (Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix) and the quark-flavor-mixing matrix [Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix] may be connected implicitly through a relation between the neutrino Dirac Yukawa coupling YD and the quark Yukawa couplings. In this paper, we study whether YD can satisfy—in the flavor basis where the charged lepton Yukawa and right-handed neutrino Majorana mass matrices are diagonal—the relation YD∝diag (yd,ys,yb)VCKMT or YD∝diag (yu,yc,yt)VCKM* without contradicting the current experimental data on quarks and neutrino oscillations. We search for sets of values of the neutrino Dirac C P phase δC P, Majorana phases α2 , α3 , and the lightest active neutrino mass that satisfy either of the above relations, with the normal or inverted hierarchy of neutrino masses. In performing the search, we consider renormalization group evolutions of the quark masses and CKM matrix and the propagation of their experimental errors along the evolutions. We find that only the former relation YD∝diag (yd,ys,yb)VCKMT with the normal neutrino mass hierarchy holds, based on which we make predictions for δC P, α2, α3, and the lightest active neutrino mass.

    The T2K experiment has observed electron neutrino appearance in a muon neutrino beam produced 295 km from the Super-Kamiokande detector with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV. A total of 28 electron neutrino events were detected with an energy distribution consistent with an appearance signal, corresponding to a significance of 7.3σ when compared to 4.92±0.55 expected background events. In the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata mixing model, the electron neutrino appearance signal depends on several parameters including three mixing angles θ12, θ23, θ13, a mass difference Δm322 and a CP violating phase δCP. In this neutrino oscillation scenario, assuming |Δm322|=2.4×10-3 eV2, sin2θ23=0.5, and Δm322>0 (Δm322<0), a best-fit value of sin22θ13=0.140-0.032+0.038 (0.170-0.037+0.045) is obtained at δCP=0. When combining the result with the current best knowledge of oscillation parameters including the world average value of θ13 from reactor experiments, some values of δCP are disfavored at the 90% C.L.

  2. Finding Mass Constraints Through Third Neutrino Mass Eigenstate Decay

    In this paper we aim to constrain the decay parameter for the third neutrino mass utilizing already accepted constraints on the other mixing parameters from the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix (PMNS). The main purpose of this project is to determine the parameters that will allow the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) to observe a decay parameter with some statistical significance. Another goal is to determine the parameters that JUNO could detect in the case that the third neutrino mass is lighter than the first two neutrino species. We also replicate the results that were found in the JUNO Conceptual Design Report (CDR). By utilizing Χ2-squared analysis constraints have been put on the mixing angles, mass squared differences, and the third neutrino decay parameter. These statistical tests take into account background noise and normalization corrections and thus the finalized bounds are a good approximation for the true bounds that JUNO can detect. If the decay parameter is not included in our models, the 99% confidence interval lies within The bounds 0s to 2.80x10-12s. However, if we account for a decay parameter of 3x10-5 ev2, then 99% confidence interval lies within 8.73x10-12s to 8.73x10-11s.

  3. Activation mechanism of melB tyrosinase from Aspergillus oryzae by acidic treatment.

    The pro form of recombinant tyrosinase from Aspergillus oryzae (melB) shows no catalytic activity, but acid treatment (around pH 3.5) of protyrosinase activates it to induce tyrosinase activity. Circular dichroism spectra, gel filtration analysis, and colorimetric assay have indicated that acid treatment around pH 3.5 induced the disruption of the conformation of the C-terminal domain covering the enzyme active site. These structural changes induced by the acid treatment may open the entrance to the enzyme active site for substrate incorporation. To compare the mechanism of hydroxylation by the acid-treated tyrosinase with that by trypsin-treated tyrosinase, a detailed steady-state kinetic analysis of the phenolase activity was performed by monitoring the O(2)-consumption rate using a Clark-type oxygen electrode. The results clearly show that the phenolase activity (phenol hydroxylation) of the activated tyrosinase involves an electrophilic aromatic substitution mechanism as in the case of mushroom tyrosinase (Yamazaki and Itoh in J. Am. Chem. Soc. 125:13034-13035, 2003) and activated hemocyanin with urea (Morioka et al. in J. Am. Chem. Soc. 128:6788-6789, 2006).

    Approximate Equation of State for Overdriven and Reflected Detonation Products Zhi-Yue Liu and Shigeru Itoh Shock Wave and Condensed Matter Research Center, Kumamoto University, 2-39-1 Kurokami, Kumamoto, 860-8555, Japan ABSTRACT There are several types of equations of state (EOS) to describe the isentropic expansion behavior of the detonation products after the explosive is exploded. Of which, Jones-Wilkins-Lee (or JWL) equation and polytropic gas (or gamma-law) equation are most popularly employed owing to either the completely experimental calibration or simple form in expression. However, both equations fail to correctly describe the behavior of detonation products above the Chapman-Jouguet (C-J) state. For this reason, a new form of equation of state is proposed for overcoming this deficiency. The new equation of state is simply a linear combination of JWL and gamma-law equations. The coefficient appeared in the EOS can be obtained by fitting to the data from the overdriven detonation experiments. Results show that this form of EOS not only gives the satisfactory description to the variation of the detonation products in overdriven or reflected state also can simply be incorporated into the hydrodynamic computer codes.

    Par1b is an evolutionarily conserved kinase that plays crucial roles in cell polarity. Controlling intracellular localization of Par1b is important for its biological activity. We previously reported that Wnt stimulation or expression of Dvl promotes accumulation of Par1b in the membrane (T. Terabayashi, T.J. Itoh, H. Yamaguchi, Y. Yoshimura, Y. Funato, S. Ohno, H. Miki, Polarity-Regulating Kinase Partitioning-Defective 1/Microtubule Affinity-Regulating Kinase 2 Negatively Regulates Development of Dendrites on Hippocampal Neurons, J. Neurosci. 27 (2007) 13098-13107). However, its molecular mechanism remains unclear. Here we show the importance of Par1b phosphorylation in the regulation of membrane localization. We find that Thr-324 ismore » phosphorylated in a Dvl-dependent manner. Interestingly, the conversion of Thr-324 to Glu results in a significant accumulation of Par1b in the membrane, without any effects on the kinase activity. Moreover, the phospho-mimicking Par1b mutant does not antagonistically function against Dvl in microtubule stabilization and neurite extension, although wildtype Par1b does. These results suggest that membrane accumulation of Par1b induced by Dvl is regulated by its phosphorylation status, which is important for Par1b to regulate the microtubule dynamics.« less

  6. Testing constrained sequential dominance models of neutrinos

    Constrained sequential dominance (CSD) is a natural framework for implementing the see-saw mechanism of neutrino masses which allows the mixing angles and phases to be accurately predicted in terms of relatively few input parameters. We analyze a class of CSD(n) models where, in the flavour basis, two right-handed neutrinos are dominantly responsible for the ‘atmospheric’ and ‘solar’ neutrino masses with Yukawa couplings to ({ν }e,{ν }μ ,{ν }τ ) proportional to (0,1,1) and (1,n,n-2), respectively, where n is a positive integer. These coupling patterns may arise in indirect family symmetry models based on A 4. With two right-handed neutrinos, using a χ 2 test, we find a good agreement with data for CSD(3) and CSD(4) where the entire Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata mixing matrix is controlled by a single phase η, which takes simple values, leading to accurate predictions for mixing angles and the magnitude of the oscillation phase | {δ }{CP}| . We carefully study the perturbing effect of a third ‘decoupled’ right-handed neutrino, leading to a bound on the lightest physical neutrino mass {m}1{{≲ }}1 meV for the viable cases, corresponding to a normal neutrino mass hierarchy.     Since the discovery of neutrino oscillations, the experimental progress in the last two decades has been very fast, with the precision measurements of the neutrino squared-mass differences and of the mixing angles, including the last unknown mixing angle θ13. Today a very large set of oscillation results obtained with a variety of experimental configurations and techniques can be interpreted in the framework of three active massive neutrinos, whose mass and flavour eigenstates are related by a 3 × 3 unitary mixing matrix, the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) matrix, parametrized by three mixing angles θ12, θ23, θ13 and a CP-violating phase δCP. The additional parameters governing neutrino oscillations are the squared-mass differences Δ mji2 = mj2 - mi2, where mi is the mass of the ith neutrino mass eigenstate. This review covers the rise of the PMNS three-neutrino mixing paradigm and the current status of the experimental determination of its parameters. The next years will continue to see a rich program of experimental endeavour coming to fruition and addressing the three missing pieces of the puzzle, namely the determination of the octant and precise value of the mixing angle θ23, the unveiling of the neutrino mass ordering (whether m1

  8. A new possible picture of the hadron structure

    A new chiral-scale invariant version of the bag model (CSB) is developed and applied to calculations of masses and radii for single bag states. The mass formula of the CSB model contains no free parameters and connects masses and radii of the bags with fundamental QCD scales, namely with {lambda}{sub QCD}, , , and quark masses. For high angular momentum states the CSB model well describes hadron Regge trajectories and predicts thin flux tubes with R{sub tube}{approx_equal}0.25 fm close to the small tube radii introduced a posteriori in modern models. For low angular momentum states this model predicts smallmore » radii of the bags R{sub bag}{approx_equal}0.25 fm close to the radii associated with constituent quarks. Masses of the lowest angular momentum bags are obtained close to the data for well known hadron resonances ({pi}(1300), {omega}(1420), N(1440),{delta}(1600), etc.). These resonances are predicted to be almost single bag states. But ground states of SU(3) hadrons (N(940), {pi}(140), etc.) are treated as strongly bounded multi bag states--BagBag-mesons, and BagBagBag-baryons like in the old Fermi, Yang, and Sakata models. As well, this model predicts the low mass excitations of SU(3) hadrons newly observed for nucleons at the following masses 1004, 1044, and 1094 MeV.« less

  9. Solid perception mechanism by a shading pattern: spatial frequency components in a corrugated wave pattern.

    Illumination allows solid object perception to be obtained and depicted by a shading pattern produced by lighting. The shading cue, as one of solid perception cues (Gibson 1979), was investigated in regard to a white corrugated wave shape, using computer graphic device: Tospix-2. The reason the corrugated wave was chosen, is that an alternately bright and dark pattern, produced by shading, can be conveniently analyzed into contained spatial frequencies. This paper reports spatial frequency properties contained in the shading pattern. The shading patterns, input into the computer graphic device, are analyzed by Fourier Transformation by the same device. After the filtration by various spatial frequency low and high pass filters, Inverse Fourier Transformation is carried out for the residual components. The result of the analysis indicates that the third through higher harmonics components are important in regard to presenting a solid reality feeling in solid perception. Sakata (1983) also reported that an edged pattern, superimposed onto a lower sinusoidal pattern, was important in solid perception. The third through higher harmonics components express the changing position of luminance on the pattern, and a slanted plane relating to the light direction. Detection of a solid shape, constructed with flat planes, is assumed to be on the bottom of the perfect curved solid perception mechanism. Apparent evidence for this assumption, in difficult visual conditions, is that a flat paneled solid is seen before the curved solid. This mechanism is explained by two spatial frequency neural network systems, assumed as having correspondence with higher spatial frequency detection and lower spatial frequency detection.

  10. Two tyrosyl radicals stabilize high oxidation states in cytochrome c oxidase for efficient energy conservation and proton translocation

    The reaction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) with oxidized bovine cytochrome c oxidase (bCcO) was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) to determine the properties of radical intermediates. Two distinct radicals with widths of 12 and 46 G are directly observed by X-band CW-EPR in the reaction of bCcO with H2O2 at pH 6 and pH 8. High-frequency EPR (D-band) provides assignments to tyrosine for both radicals based on well-resolved g-tensors. The 46 G wide radical has extensive hyperfine structure and can be fit with parameters consistent with Y129. However, the 12 G wide radical has minimal hyperfine structure and can be fit using parameters unique to the post-translationally modified Y244 in CcO. The results are supported by mixed quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics calculations. This study reports spectroscopic evidence of a radical formed on the modified tyrosine in CcO and resolves the much debated controversy of whether the wide radical seen at low pH in the bovine system is a tyrosine or tryptophan. A model is presented showing how radical formation and migration may play an essential role in proton translocation. This work was done in collaboration with Michelle A.   11. Item response theory-based validation of a short form of the Eating Behavior Scale for Japanese adults

    Abstract Obesity has become a serious social problem in industrialized countries in recent years. Clinically, although the evaluation of dietary behavior abnormalities is as important as any method of risk assessment for obesity, almost all the existing scales with many items may have numerous practical clinical difficulties. In this study, we aimed to prepare a short questionnaire to assess the dietary behavior abnormalities related to obesity. A total of 1032 individuals aged 20 to 59 years participated in the present study. Using item response theory (IRT), we selected the items for a short version from among 30 items of Sakata Eating Behavior Scale (EBS), which is widely used in Japan. As a result of the IRT-based analysis on the original 30-item version, 7 items were adopted as the short version. The correlation between the total score of the original EBS and the EBS short form was extremely high (r = 0.93, P = .001). In examining the criterion validity, for all participants (n = 1032), male (n = 516), and female (n = 516), the correlation coefficients between the total score of the EBS short form and body mass index (BMI) were r = 0.26, r = 0.28, and r = 0.28, respectively. The results of the receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed with obesity BMI > 25 kg/m2 as a dependent variable, the value of the area under the curve in the ROC was significantly higher in the 7-item version than in the total score of the original items (P = .0005). In conclusion, the 7-item EBS short form was created. Furthermore, it was found that the EBS short form is a reliable and valid measure that can be used as an indicator of obesity in both clinical and research settings. PMID:29049248

    Scincine lizards in Madagascar form an endemic clade of about 60 species exhibiting a variety of ecomorphological adaptations. Several subclades have adapted to burrowing and convergently regressed their limbs and eyes, resulting in a variety of partial and completely limbless morphologies among extant taxa. However, patterns of limb regression in these taxa have not been studied in detail. Here we fill this gap in knowledge by providing a phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences of three mitochondrial and four nuclear gene fragments in an extended sampling of Malagasy skinks, and microtomographic analyses of osteology of various burrowing taxa adapted to sand substrate. Based on our data we propose to (i) consider Sirenoscincus Sakata & Hikida, 2003, as junior synonym of Voeltzkowia Boettger, 1893; (ii) resurrect the genus name Grandidierina Mocquard, 1894, for four species previously included in Voeltzkowia; and (iii) consider Androngo Brygoo, 1982, as junior synonym of Pygomeles Grandidier, 1867. By supporting the clade consisting of the limbless Voeltzkowia mira and the forelimb-only taxa V. mobydick and V. yamagishii, our data indicate that full regression of limbs and eyes occurred in parallel twice in the genus Voeltzkowia (as hitherto defined) that we consider as a sand-swimming ecomorph: in the Voeltzkowia clade sensu stricto the regression first affected the hindlimbs and subsequently the forelimbs, whereas the Grandidierina clade first regressed the forelimbs and subsequently the hindlimbs following the pattern prevalent in squamates. Timetree reconstructions for the Malagasy Scincidae contain a substantial amount of uncertainty due to the absence of suitable primary fossil calibrations. However, our preliminary reconstructions suggest rapid limb regression in Malagasy scincids with an estimated maximal duration of 6 MYr for a complete regression in Paracontias, and 4 and 8 MYr respectively for complete regression of forelimbs in Grandidierina and

    Elastographpy is a newly developed noninvasive imaging technique that uses ultrasound (US) to evaluate tissue stiffness. The interpretation of the same elastographic images may be variable according to reviewers. Because breast lesions are usually reported according to American College of Radiology Breast Imaging and Data System (ACR BI-RADS) lexicons and final category, we tried to compare observer variability between lexicons and final categorization of US BI-RADS and the elasticity score of US elastography. From April 2009 to February 2010, 1356 breast lesions in 1330 patients underwent ultrasound-guided core biopsy. Among them, 63 breast lesions in 55 patients (mean age, 45.7 years; range, 21-79 years) underwent both conventional ultrasound and elastography and were included in this study. Two radiologists independently performed conventional ultrasound and elastography, and another three observers reviewed conventional ultrasound images and elastography videos. Observers independently recorded the elasticity score for a 5-point scoring system proposed by Itoh et al., BI-RADS lexicons and final category using ultrasound BI-RADS. The histopathologic results were obtained and used as the reference standard. Interobserver variability was evaluated. Of the 63 lesions, 42 (66.7 %) were benign, and 21 (33.3 %) were malignant. The highest value of concordance among all variables was achieved for the elasticity score (k = 0.59), followed by shape (k = 0.54), final category (k = 0.48), posterior acoustic features (k = 0.44), echogenecity and orientation (k = 0.43). The least concordances were margin (k = 0.26), lesion boundary (k = 0.29) and calcification (k = 0.3). Elasticity score showed a higher level of interobserver agreement for the diagnosis of breast lesions than BI-RADS lexicons and final category.

    Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the variability in the interpretation of parenchymal abnormalities and to assess the differences in interpretation of routine renal scintigraphic findings on posterior view of technetium-99m dimercaptosuccinic acid (pvDMSA) scans and parenchymal phase of technetium-99m mercaptoacetyltriglycine (ppMAG3) scans by using standard criterions to make standardization and semiquantitative evaluation and to have more accurately correlation. Materials and Methods: Two experienced nuclear medicine physicians independently interpreted pvDMSA scans of 204 and ppMAG3 scans of 102 pediatric patients, retrospectively. Comparisons were made by visual inspection of pvDMSA scans, and ppMAG3 scans by using a grading system modified from Itoh et al. According to this, anatomical damage of the renal parenchyma was classified into six types: Grade 0-V. In the calculation of the agreement rates, Kendall correlation (tau-b) analysis was used. Results: According to our findings, excellent agreement was found for DMSA grade readings (DMSA-GR) (tau-b = 0.827) and good agreement for MAG3 grade readings (MAG3-GR) (tau-b = 0.790) between two observers. Most of clear parenchymal lesions detected on pvDMSA scans and ppMAG3 scans identified by observers equally. Studies with negative or minimal lesions reduced correlation degrees for both DMSA-GR and MAG3-GR. Conclusion: Our grading system can be used for standardization of the reports. We conclude that standardization of criteria and terminology in the interpretations may result in higher interobserver consistency, also improve low interobserver reproducibility and objectivity of renal scintigraphy reports.   17. Sinusoidal modulation analysis for optical system MTF measurements.

    The modulation transfer function (MTF) is a commonly used metric for defining the spatial resolution characteristics of imaging systems. While the MTF is defined in terms of how an imaging system demodulates the amplitude of a sinusoidal input, this approach has not been in general use to measure MTFs in the medical imaging community because producing sinusoidal x-ray patterns is technically difficult. However, for optical systems such as charge coupled devices (CCD), which are rapidly becoming a part of many medical digital imaging systems, the direct measurement of modulation at discrete spatial frequencies using a sinusoidal test pattern is practical. A commercially available optical test pattern containing spatial frequencies ranging from 0.375 cycles/mm to 80 cycles/mm was sued to determine the MRF of a CCD-based optical system. These results were compared with the angulated slit method of Fujita [H. Fujita, D. Tsia, T. Itoh, K. Doi, J. Morishita, K. Ueda, and A. Ohtsuka, "A simple method for determining the modulation transfer function in digital radiography," IEEE Trans. Medical Imaging 11, 34-39 (1992)]. The use of a semiautomated profiled iterated reconstruction technique (PIRT) is introduced, where the shift factor between successive pixel rows (due to angulation) is optimized iteratively by least-squares error analysis rather than by hand measurement of the slit angle. PIRT was used to find the slit angle for the Fujita technique and to find the sine-pattern angle for the sine-pattern technique. Computer simulation of PIRT for the case of the slit image (a line spread function) demonstrated that it produced a more accurate angle determination than "hand" measurement, and there is a significant difference between the errors in the two techniques (Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, p < 0.001). The sine-pattern method and the Fujita slit method produced comparable MTF curves for the CCD camera evaluated.

  18. The α-Amylase Induction in Endosperm during Rice Seed Germination Is Caused by Gibberellin Synthesized in Epithelium1

    We recently isolated two genes (OsGA3ox1 and OsGA3ox2) from rice (Oryza sativa) encoding 3β-hydroxylase, which catalyzes the final step of active gibberellin (GA) biosynthesis (H. Itoh, M. Ueguchi-Tanaka, N. Sentoku, H. Kitano, M. Matsuoka, M. Kobayashi [2001] Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 98: 8909–8914). Using these cloned cDNAs, we analyzed the temporal and spatial expression patterns of the 3β-hydroxylase genes and also an α-amylase gene (RAmy1A) during rice seed germination to investigate the relationship between GA biosynthesis and α-amylase expression. Northern-blot analyses revealed that RAmy1A expression in the embryo occurs before the induction of 3β-hydroxylase expression, whereas in the endosperm, a high level of RAmy1A expression occurs 1 to 2 d after the peak of OsGA3ox2 expression and only in the absence of uniconazol. Based on the analysis of an OsGA3ox2 null mutant (d18-Akibare dwarf), we determined that 3β-hydroxylase produced by OsGA3ox2 is important for the induction of RAmy1A expression and that the OsGA3ox1 product is not essential for α-amylase induction. The expression of OsGA3ox2 was localized to the shoot region and epithelium of the embryo, strongly suggesting that active GA biosynthesis occurs in these two regions. The synthesis of active GA in the epithelium is important for α-amylase expression in the endosperm, because an embryonic mutant defective in shoot formation, but which developed epithelium cells, induced α-amylase expression in the endosperm, whereas a mutant defective in epithelium development did not.   19. Kiso Multi-Fiber Spectroscope Project (C)

    A Multi-FIBER Spectroscope at Kiso Observatory is under consideration as our next instrument. In this paper we report an overview of our instrument and a scientific target of our survey project. We are going to attach multi-fiber system at the prime focus of Kiso 105cm Schmidt telescope. This telescope has some advantages for our project. First, the efficiency in survey for the object, which number density is 0.1 to 10 degree2, is higher than other multi object system due to the wide field of view (6 degree x 6 degree). Second, an optics of telescope is well-matched to fiber numerical aperture (NA) at an input end of fiber. Moreover, taking a focal ratio degradation (FRD) and scrambling property into account, since the light from object dose not move at the entrance slit of spectroscope, we could get spectroscopic data stably with this system. We select a fiber with 100 micron meter core which is correspond to 6 arcsec on focal plane, that is matched with a typical seeing (about 3 arcsec) of Kiso Observatory and set 150 fibers to one field. For efficient observations, it is necessary to arrange fibers accurately within an accuracy of +/- 25 micron meter on the curved focal plane during a typical exposure time (1 hour). Therefore we examine a particular positioner specialized for curved surface. We also develop a spectroscope that is suited for a fast focal ratio and proceed with making its design. One of our main key projects with this system is a non-biased metallicity survey for solar neighbor stars. We are now establishing a new metallicity determination method that easily and reliably measures a metallicity from low-dispersion spectra. (see Itoh et al.). As we consider our main target as Galactic objects and low resolution (R is around 1000), we could observe a star with 17 mag at V-band (1 hour exposure).

  20. Application of the windowed-Fourier-transform-based fringe analysis technique for investigating temperature and concentration fields in fluids.

    The present work is concerned with the development and application of a novel fringe analysis technique based on the principles of the windowed-Fourier-transform (WFT) for the determination of temperature and concentration fields from interferometric images for a range of heat and mass transfer applications. Based on the extent of the noise level associated with the experimental data, the technique has been coupled with two different phase unwrapping methods: the Itoh algorithm and the quality guided phase unwrapping technique for phase extraction. In order to generate the experimental data, a range of experiments have been carried out which include cooling of a vertical flat plate in free convection conditions, combustion of mono-propellant flames, and growth of organic as well as inorganic crystals from their aqueous solutions. The flat plate and combustion experiments are modeled as heat transfer applications wherein the interest is to determine the whole-field temperature distribution. Aqueous-solution-based crystal growth experiments are performed to simulate the mass transfer phenomena and the interest is to determine the two-dimensional solute concentration field around the growing crystal. A Mach-Zehnder interferometer has been employed to record the path-integrated quantity of interest (temperature and/or concentration) in the form of interferometric images in the experiments. The potential of the WFT method has also been demonstrated on numerically simulated phase data for varying noise levels, and the accuracy in phase extraction have been quantified in terms of the root mean square errors. Three levels of noise, i.e., 0%, 10%, and 20% have been considered. Results of the present study show that the WFT technique allows an accurate extraction of phase values that can subsequently be converted into two-dimensional temperature and/or concentration distribution fields.   1. When Do Short-Wave Cones Signal Blue or Red? A Solution Introducing the Concept of Primary and Secondary Cone Outputs

    A recent paper by Oh and Sakata investigates the “incompletely solved mystery” of how the three cone responses map onto perceived hue, and particularly the S cone’s well-known problematic contribution to blueness and redness. Citing previous workers, they argue the twentieth century traditional multistage model does not satisfactorily account for color appearance. In their experiment, increasing S cone excitation with shortening wavelength from about 480–460 nm increased perceived blueness up to the unique Blue point at 470 nm, when (a) it began decreasing and (b) redness perception began increasing. The authors asked, What mechanism can be responsible for such functions? I demonstrate a solution. First, it is shown the problem does not lie in the traditional opponent color chromatic responses yellow-blue, red-green (y-b, r-g, which accurately predict the above functions), but in the traditional multistage model of mapping cone responses to chromatic response functions. Arguably, this is due to the S cone’s hypothetically signaling both blueness and redness by the same mechanism rather than by different, independent, mechanisms. Hence a new distinction or mechanism is proposed for a more accurate model, that introduces the new terms primary and secondary cone outputs. However, this distinction requires that the cones S, M, L each directly produce one of the three spectral chromatic responses b, g, y. Such a model was recently published, based on extremely high correlation of SML cone responsivities with the three spectral (bgy) chromatic responses. This model encodes the former directly onto the latter one-to-one as cone primary outputs, whilst S and L cones have a further or secondary function where each produces one of the two spectral lobes of r chromatic response.   3. New Insight into Nuclear Reactions in Solids

    Earlier work by the author disclosed evidence for nuclear transmutations in multi-layer thin-film Ni/Pd electrodes loaded to a high ratio of hydrogen/film metal using an electrolytic technique [1]. Non-natural isotopes abundances were found for select products. A distinctive characteristic of this and similar experiments by others is a product yield curve vs. mass with four high yield peaks distributed between low and high masses. Attempts to explain this observation have evolved around the original swimming electron layer (SEL) theory [2]. In addition, CR-39 track detector measurements have revealed low-level emission of 1.6 MeV protons and 16 MeV alpha particles from the front face of the thin film electrodes during runs [3]. Most recently Mitsubishi Corp. researchers have reported a real-time transmutation measurement using built-in XPS diagnostics where a surface layer of Sr-88 was transmuted into Mo-96 over a 200 hour run period during the diffusion of deuterium through a multi-layer thin-film Pd/CaO substrate [4]. Likewise in a companion experiment, Cs-133 was transmuted into Pr-141. These products exhibit a large deviation from natural isotopic abundance, and the characteristic signature is a mass change of 8 and charge change of 4. These various phenomena along with a preliminary theory involving SEL and orbital mixing will be presented.     Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion (PPCF) invites submissions on the topic of `Experimental studies of zonal flow and turbulence', for consideration for a special topical cluster of articles to be published early in 2006. The topical cluster will be published in an issue of PPCF, combined with regular articles. The Guest Editor for the special cluster will be S-I Itoh, Kyushu University, Japan. There has been remarkable progress in the area of structure formation by turbulence. One of the highlights has been the physics of zonal flow and drift wave turbulence in toroidal plasmas. Extensive theoretical as well as computational studies have revealed the various mechanisms in turbulence and zonal flows. At the same time, experimental research on the zonal flow, geodesic acoustic modes and generation of global electric field by turbulence has evolved rapidly. Fast growth in reports of experimental results has stimulated further efforts to develop increased knowledge and systematic understanding. Each paper considered for the special cluster should describe the present research status and new scientific knowledge/results from the authors on experimental studies of zonal flow, geodesic acoustic modes and generation of electric field by turbulence (including studies of Reynolds-Maxwell stresses, etc). However, only a few studies have investigated the geochemical characteristics of BIFs deposited in a shallow water environment during the Archean, which may have differed from those deposited in a deep water environment. Therefore, we investigated geological, petrographic and geochemical characteristics of ferruginous rocks deposited in a shallow water environment in the Moodies group, in the Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa. We obtained ferruginous rock samples in the Moodies group from both an outcrop and underground gold mine, and compared the characteristics of these samples. The 70 sedimentary rock samples were divided into groups based on the dominant Fe minerals they contain: Hematite-rich jaspilite (HM group), Magnetite-rich iron formation/shale/sandstone (MT group), and Siderite-rich sandstone (SD group). Samples in the HM group are predominantly composed of fine-grained quartz (< 20 μm) and hematite (< 5 μm), which are interpreted to be chemical precipitates. Samples in the MT group contain quartz, magnetite, siderite, ankerite, chlorite, biotite and chromite. The grain size of magnetite is much larger (20-150 μm) than that of hematite in the HM group.   9. A search for near-infrared molecular hydrogen emission in the CTTS LkHα 264 and the debris disk 49 Ceti

    We report on the first results of a search for molecular hydrogen emission from protoplanetary disks using CRIRES, ESO's new VLT Adaptive Optics high resolution near-infrared spectrograph. We observed the classical T Tauri star LkHα 264 and the debris disk 49 Cet, and searched for υ= 1-0 S(1) H2 emission at 2.1218 μm, υ = 1-0 S(0) H2 emission at 2.2233 μm and υ = 2-1 S(1) H2 emission at 2.2477 μm. The H2 line at 2.1218 μm is detected in LkHα 264 confirming the previous observations by Itoh et al. (2003). In addition, our CRIRES spectra reveal the previously observed but not detected H2 line at 2.2233 μm in LkHα 264. An upper limit of 5.3 × 10-16 erg s-1 cm-2 on the υ = 2-1 S(1) H2 line flux in LkHα 264 is derived. The detected lines coincide with the rest velocity of LkHα 264. They have a FWHM of ~20 km s-1. This is strongly suggestive of a disk origin for the lines. These observations are the first simultaneous detection of υ = 1-0 S(1) and υ = 1-0 S(0) H2 emission from a protoplanetary disk. 49 Cet does not exhibit H2 emission in any of the three observed lines. We derive the mass of optically thin H2 at T˜1500 K in the inner disk of LkHα 264 and derive stringent limits in the case of 49 Cet at the same temperature. There are a few lunar masses of optically thin hot H2 in the inner disk (~0.1 AU) of LkHα 264, and less than a tenth of a lunar mass of hot H2 in the inner disk of 49 Cet. The measured 1-0 S(0)/1-0 S(1) and 2-1 S(1)/1-0 S(1) line ratios in LkHα 264 indicate that the H2 emitting gas is at a temperature lower than 1500 K and that the H2 is most likely thermally excited by UV photons. The υ = 1-0 S(1) H2 line in LkHα 264 is single peaked and spatially unresolved. Modeling of the shape of the line suggests that the disk should be seen close to face-on (i<35°) and that the line is emitted within a few AU of the LkHα 264 disk.     proteins. Unlike the N-terminal ATP binding site, there is no reported co-crystal structure of Hsp90 C-terminus bound to any inhibitor. The Hsp90 C-terminal domain, however, is known to contain a conserved pentapeptide sequence (MEEVD) which is recognized by co-chaperones. Cisplatin is a platinum-containing chemotherapeutic used to treat various types of cancers, including testicular, ovarian, bladder, and small cell lung cancer. Most notably, cisplatin coordinates to DNA bases, resulting in cross-linked DNA, which prohibits rapidly dividing cells from duplicating DNA for mitosis. Itoh and co-workers reported that cisplatin decreases the chaperone activity of Hsp90. This group applied bovine brain cytosol to a cisplatin affinity column, eluted with cisplatin and detected Hsp90 in the eluent. Subsequent experiments indicated that cisplatin exhibits high affinity for Hsp90. Moreover Csermely and co-workers determined that the cisplatin binding site is located proximal to the C-terminal ATP binding site. EGCG is one of the active ingredients found in green tea. EGCG is known to inhibit the activity of many Hsp90-dependent client proteins, including telomerase, several kinases, and the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). Recently Gasiewicz and co-workers reported that EGCG manifests its antagonistic activity against AhR through binding Hsp90. Similar to novobiocin, EGCG was shown to bind the C-terminus of Hsp90. Unlike previously identified N-terminal Hsp90 inhibitors, EGCG does not appear to prevent Hsp90 from forming multiprotein complexes. Studies are currently underway to determine whether EGCG competes with novobiocin or cisplatin binding. Taxol, a well-known drug for the treatment of cancer, is responsible for the stabilization of microtubules and the inhibition of mitosis. Previous studies have shown that taxol induces the activation of kinases and transcription factors, and mimics the effect of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an attribute unrelated to its tubulin

  15. Novobiocin and Additional Inhibitors of the Hsp90 C-Terminal Nucleotide-binding Pocket

    N-terminal ATP binding site, there is no reported co-crystal structure of Hsp90 C-terminus bound to any inhibitor. The Hsp90 C-terminal domain, however, is known to contain a conserved pentapeptide sequence (MEEVD) which is recognized by co-chaperones. Cisplatin is a platinum-containing chemotherapeutic used to treat various types of cancers, including testicular, ovarian, bladder, and small cell lung cancer. Most notably, cisplatin coordinates to DNA bases, resulting in cross-linked DNA, which prohibits rapidly dividing cells from duplicating DNA for mitosis. Itoh and co-workers reported that cisplatin decreases the chaperone activity of Hsp90. This group applied bovine brain cytosol to a cisplatin affinity column, eluted with cisplatin and detected Hsp90 in the eluent. Subsequent experiments indicated that cisplatin exhibits high affinity for Hsp90. Moreover Csermely and co-workers determined that the cisplatin binding site is located proximal to the C-terminal ATP binding site. EGCG is one of the active ingredients found in green tea EGCG is known to inhibit the activity of many Hsp90-dependent client proteins, including telomerase, several kinases, and the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). Recently Gasiewicz and co-workers reported that EGCG manifests its antagonistic activity against AhR through binding Hsp90. Similar to novobiocin, EGCG was shown to bind the C-terminus of Hsp90. Unlike previously identified N-terminal Hsp90 inhibitors, EGCG does not appear to prevent Hsp90 from forming multiprotein complexes. Studies are currently underway to determine whether EGCG competes with novobiocin or cisplatin binding. Taxol, a well-known drug for the treatment of cancer, is responsible for the stabilization of microtubules and the inhibition of mitosis. Previous studies have shown that taxol induces the activation of kinases and transcription factors, and mimies the effect of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an attribute unrelated to its tubulin-binding properties

  17. [Lessons learned from tuberculosis outbreak cases].

    Teishin Hospital), Toru MORI (Research Institute of Tuberculosis, Japan Anti-Tuberculosis Association) The index case was a patient who was admitted to a general hospital where she was treated with pulsed corticosteroid therapy and then put on a respirator. Soon after, she developed tuberculosis (TB) and died. Immediately after her death, the healthcare workers who had close contact with the index case were given the QuantiFERON TB Gold (QFT) test, which indicated that all staff except one were negative. However, a QFT test administered eight weeks later had a positive rate of 18.6%. Subsequently, a total of five workers, including a doctor, nurses, and radiology technicians, developed TB. The bacterial isolates from five of them exhibited an RFLP pattern identical to that of the index case. These secondary cases of TB included a case who had contact of less than 5 minutes, a case whose QFT was negative ("doubtful" in the Japanese criterion of the QFT), and a case who was QFT-positive but declined to be treated for latent TB infection (LTBI). No other workers nor hospitalized patients developed TB. The healthcare worker contacts were further examined with the QFT 6, 9 and 12 months after the contact. The QFT results revealed four additional positive reactors and four "doubtful" reactors who were indicated for LTBI treatment. Among them were seven subjects who turned positive six months after the contact. TB prevention in hospital settings and contact investigations were discussed with the hospital staff, with special reference to the application of QFT. 3. Summary and issues of concern relating to a tuberculosis outbreak in a prison: Mitsunobu HOMMA, Takefumi ITOH (Department of Respiratory Medicine, Akita City Hospital) We report a tuberculosis outbreak that occurred in a prison in the spring of 2011, resulting in 11 cases of active disease and 40 cases of infection.
