  3. Evaluation of minor pathogen intramammary infection, susceptibility parameters, and somatic cell counts on the development of new intramammary infections with major mastitis pathogens.

    Major mastitis pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus uberis, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, and coliforms are usually considered more virulent and damaging to the udder than minor mastitis pathogens such as Corynebacterium spp. and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). The current literature comprises several studies (n=38) detailing analyses with conflicting results as to whether intramammary infections (IMI) with the minor pathogens decrease, increase, or have no effect on the risk of a quarter acquiring a new IMI (NIMI) with a major pathogen. The Canadian Bovine Mastitis Research Network has a large mastitis database derived from a 2-yr data collection on a national cohort of dairy farms, and data from this initiative were used to further investigate the effect of IMI with minor pathogens on the acquisition of new major pathogen infections (defined as a culture-positive quarter sample in a quarter that had been free of that major pathogen in previous samples in the sampling period). Longitudinal milk samplings of clinically normal udders taken over several 6-wk periods as well as samples from cows pre-dry-off and postcalving were used to this end (n=80,397 quarter milk samples). The effects of CNS and Corynebacterium spp. on the major mastitis pathogens Staph. aureus, Strep. uberis, Strep. dysgalactiae, and coliform bacteria (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp.) were investigated using risk ratio analyses and multilevel logistic regression models. Quarter-, cow- and herd-level susceptibility parameters were also evaluated and were able to account for the increased susceptibility that exists within herds, cows and quarters, removing it from estimates for the effects of the minor pathogens. Increased quarter-level susceptibility was associated with increased risk of major pathogen NIMI for all pathogens except the coliforms. Increased somatic cell count was consistently associated with elevated risk of new major pathogen infections, but this was assumed to be a result of low sensitivity of bacteriology to diagnose major pathogen NIMI expediently and accurately. The presence of CNS in the sample 2 samplings before the occurrence of a NIMI increased the odds of experiencing a Staph. aureus NIMI 2.0 times, making the presence of CNS a risk factor for acquiring a Staph. aureus NIMI. Even with this extensive data set, power was insufficient to make a definitive statement about the effect of minor pathogen IMI on the acquisition of major pathogen NIMI. Definitively answering questions of this nature are likely to require an extremely large data set dedicated particularly to minor pathogen presence and NIMI with major pathogens.   4. Efficacy of a high free iodine barrier teat disinfectant for the prevention of naturally occurring new intramammary infections and clinical mastitis in dairy cows.

    Using a natural exposure trial design, the goal of our study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of an iodine teat disinfectant with barrier properties and a high level of free iodine relative to a conventional iodine teat disinfectant with no barrier properties and low levels of free iodine. During the 18 wk of the trial, quarter milk samples were collected every 2 wk from 385 dairy cows from 2 herds. Cows on both farms were assigned in a balanced way according to milk yield, number of lactation, days in milk, somatic cell count (SCC) and microbiology culture pretrial into one of following groups: nonbarrier post milking teat disinfectant (NBAR; n = 195 cows; 747 quarters) or barrier postmilking teat disinfectant (BAR; n = 190 cows; 728 quarters). Afterward, at each scoring date every 2 wk, milk SCC was quantified in samples from all mammary quarters and microbiologic culture was only performed on milk samples with SCC >200,000 cells/mL for multiparous cows and SCC >100,000 cells/mL for primiparous cows. A new intramammary infection (NIMI) was defined when a quarter had milk SCC <200,000 cells/mL for multiparous cows and <100,000 cells/mL for primiparous without microorganism isolation, and in a subsequent sampling visit had milk SCC >200,000 cells/mL for multiparous cows and >100,000 cells/mL for primiparous cows, and positive microorganism isolation. A quarter could have several NIMI, but only 1 case per specific pathogen was considered. The most frequently isolated microorganism group on both farms was Streptococcus spp. (6.25% of total mammary quarters), followed by coagulase-negative staphylococci (3.6%) and Corynebacterium spp. (1.5%). In the present study, an interaction occurred between treatment and week of trial on the incidence risk of NIMI. Quarters disinfected with BAR had 54 and 37% lower odds of NIMI than quarters disinfected with NBAR at 8 and 16 wk of the trial, respectively; whereas at other weeks of the study both products had similar incidence risks of NIMI. Overall, teats disinfected with BAR had 46% lower odds of acquiring a clinical mastitis than those disinfected with NBAR. We concluded that the postmilking teat disinfectant with barrier properties and higher free iodine content reduced the risk of clinical mastitis, although differences in new infections were detected at only weekly time points.     Background: Estimating engagement levels from postural micromovements has been summarized by some researchers as: increased proximity to the screen is a marker for engagement, while increased postural movement is a signal for disengagement or negative affect. However, these findings are inconclusive: the movement hypothesis challenges other findings of dyadic interaction in humans, and experiments on the positional hypothesis diverge from it. Hypotheses: (1) Under controlled conditions, adding a relevant visual stimulus to an auditory stimulus will preferentially result in Non-Instrumental Movement Inhibition (NIMI) of the head. (2) When instrumental movements are eliminated and computer-interaction rate is held constant, for two identically-structured stimuli, cognitive engagement (i.e., interest) will result in measurable NIMI of the body generally. Methods: Twenty-seven healthy participants were seated in front of a computer monitor and speakers. Discrete 3-min stimuli were presented with interactions mediated via a handheld trackball without any keyboard, to minimize instrumental movements of the participant's body. Music videos and audio-only music were used to test hypothesis (1). Time-sensitive, highly interactive stimuli were used to test hypothesis (2). Subjective responses were assessed via visual analog scales. The computer users' movements were quantified using video motion tracking from the lateral aspect. Repeated measures ANOVAs with Tukey post hoc comparisons were performed. Results: For two equivalently-engaging music videos, eliminating the visual content elicited significantly increased non-instrumental movements of the head (while also decreasing subjective engagement); a highly engaging user-selected piece of favorite music led to further increased non-instrumental movement. For two comparable reading tasks, the more engaging reading significantly inhibited (42%) movement of the head and thigh; however, when a highly engaging video game was compared to the boring reading, even though the reading task and the game had similar levels of interaction (trackball clicks), only thigh movement was significantly inhibited, not head movement. Conclusions: NIMI can be elicited by adding a relevant visual accompaniment to an audio-only stimulus or by making a stimulus cognitively engaging. However, these results presume that all other factors are held constant, because total movement rates can be affected by cognitive engagement, instrumental movements, visual requirements, and the time-sensitivity of the stimulus.     The term Underused Urban Spaces (UUS) refers to spaces within urban areas that have become unused, or that are being used to a lesser degree than they could or should be such as former industrial zones, abandoned facilities or buildings and Expo or Olympic Games cities. The Islamic pilgrimage sites known as Hajj sites (HS) are considered form of the UUS concept as they are used lesser degree than they should be. However, the emergence of such spaces has therefore encouraged researchers, urban planner, social and local authorities to discuses about the appropriate decision regarding their future towards conversion or alternatively using those spaces in order to achieve positive social, economic and environmental benefits, according to Pagano and Bowman (2000), UUS can be a powerful tool for governments and investors to use during the urban growth (UG) of their cities. Since, remote sensing and GIS technologies are used recently to study and analyze the UG of cities; the main objective of this paper is to demonstrate the efficiency of those technologies in addressing the future decisions regarding the underused status of Hajj sites in relation to UG of the city of Mecca. Tow classified land cover maps of Mecca for two years (1998 and 2013), in addition to entropy index and multiple regression analyses were utilized in order to quantify the relationship between HS and Mecca UG. The results showed that the urban growth of Mecca has increased by approximately 56%, and almost 32% of that increased were around HS in on hand, and on the other hand the entropy and the regression analysis showed that there is 51% probability that the future growth to be also around HS. These findings will better addressing the future decisions regarding the underused status of HS, simultaneously revel that the use of RS and GIS was highly effective to be adopted within similar cases of UUS.

    Endometrial stromal tumors are rare uterine mesenchymal neoplasms that have intrigued pathologists for years, not only because they commonly pose diagnostic dilemmas, but also because the classification and pathogenesis of these tumors has been widely debated. The current World Health Organization recognizes 4 categories of endometrial stromal tumor: endometrial stromal nodule (ESN), low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LG-ESS), high-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (HG-ESS), and undifferentiated uterine sarcoma (UUS). uterine sarcoma. These categories are defined by the presence of distinct translocations as well as tumor morphology and prognosis. Specifically, the JAZF1-SUZ12 (formerly JAZF1-JJAZ1) fusion identifies a large proportion of ESN and LG-ESSs, whereas the YWHAE-FAM22 translocation identifies HG-ESSs. The latter tumors appear to have a prognosis intermediate between LG-ESS and UUS, which exhibits no specific translocation pattern. This review (1) presents the clinicopathologic features of endometrial stromal tumors; (2) discusses their immunophenotype; and (3) highlights the recent advances in molecular genetics which explain their pathogenesis and lend support for a new classification system.

    Systematic theoretical and experimental investigations have been performed to understand the periodicity and electronic structures of trivalent-gold halides using gold tetrahalides [AuX4]⁻ anions (X = F, Cl, Br, I, At, Uus). The [AuX4]⁻ (X = Cl, Br, I) anions were produced in gas phase and their negative-ion photoelectron spectra were obtained, which exhibited rich and well-resolved spectral peaks. We calculated the adiabatic as well as vertical electron detachment energies using density functional methods with scalar and spin-orbit coupling relativistic effects. The simulated photoelectron spectra based on these calculations are in good agreement with the experimental spectra. Our results show thatmore » the trivalent Au(III) oxidation state becomes progressively less stable while Au(I) is preferred when the halides become heavier along the Period Table.   13. Metronidazole Resistance in Prevotella spp. and Description of a New nim Gene in Prevotella baroniae▿

    Nonduplicate clinical isolates of Prevotella spp. recovered from patients hospitalized between 2003 and 2006 in two French tertiary-care teaching hospitals were investigated for their susceptibility to metronidazole and the presence of nim genes. Of the 188 strains tested, 3 isolates displayed reduced susceptibility to metronidazole after 48 h of incubation, while 27 additional isolates exhibited heterogeneous resistance after prolonged incubation; all 30 of the isolates were nim negative. Among the remaining 158 isolates, 7 nim-positive isolates were detected. All of these strains were identified as Prevotella baroniae by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and contained a new nim gene, named nimI, as determined by DNA sequence analysis. Chromosomal localization of this single-copy gene was demonstrated in all clinical isolates as well as in type strain P. baroniae DSM 16972 by using Southern hybridization. No known associated insertion sequence elements were detected upstream of the nimI gene in any of the nim-positive strains by PCR mapping. After prolonged exposure to metronidazole, stable resistant subpopulations could be selected in nimI-positive Prevotella isolates (n = 6) as well as in nim-negative Prevotella isolates (n = 6), irrespective of their initial susceptibility to this antibiotic. This study is the first description of a new nitroimidazole resistance gene in P. baroniae which seems to be silent and which might be intrinsic in this species. Moreover, our findings highlight the fact that high-level resistance to metronidazole may be easily induced in both nim-positive and nim-negative Prevotella sp. strains. PMID:19805556

    Ayurveda the science of life, since its origin is serving the mankind throughout in health & disease state of life. Shalakyatantra, one of its specialized branch deals with the science of Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Orodental surgery & Head; was contributed and developed by Rajrishi Nimi, the King of Videha, who was a colleague of Atreya, Punarvasu, Dhanwantri, Bharadwaja, Kashyapa etc. The available literature related to this speciality is reproduced from original text of Nimitantra in Uttartantra of Sushruta samhita. So Rajrishi Nimi deserves all the credit and regards for Shalakyatantra and for being the first eye surgeon on this earth. The fact regarding the technique of cataract surgery adopted by ancient surgeons is still a matter of debate. Most of the medical fraternity accepts cataract surgery of ancient surgeons as couching procedure but after going through forth coming pages, the prevailing concept will prove to be a myth. It started with extra capsular extraction through small incision during the period of Sushruta Samhita but later shifted to couching like technique by Acharya Vagbhatta. Secondly, the objective of this literary research paper is to find proper co-relation of the disease cataract to those mentioned in Ancient Ayurvedic classic. Linganasha has been inadvertently taken as cataract but this is neither logical nor in accordance with classics. We find detailed description of cataract's differential diagnosis, indications, contra- indications, pre/intra/post operative procedures and complication in ancient texts of Ayurveda. Not only this, vivid description of treatment of various complications of cataract surgery are also given. Needless to say, no other surgically treatable diseases & its complications except Kaphaja Linganasha are given this much attention.

  18. Examining the effect of intramammary infections with minor mastitis pathogens on the acquisition of new intramammary infections with major mastitis pathogens--a systematic review and meta-analysis.

    Major mastitis pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus uberis, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, and the coliforms are usually considered more virulent and damaging to the udder than minor mastitis pathogens such as Corynebacterium bovis and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). The current literature contains several studies detailing analyses with conflicting results as to whether intramammary infection (IMI) with the minor pathogens decreases, increases, or has no effect on the risk of a quarter acquiring a new intramammary infection (NIMI) with a major pathogen. To investigate the available scientific evidence regarding the effect of IMI with minor pathogens on the acquisition of NIMI with major pathogens, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. The total extant English- and French-language literature in electronic databases was searched and all publications cited by relevant papers were investigated. Results from 68 studies were extracted from 38 relevant papers. Random-effects models were used to investigate the effects of CNS and C. bovis on acquisition of new IMI with any of the major pathogens, as well as individually for the minor pathogens and Staph. aureus. Significant heterogeneity among studies exists, some of which could be accounted for by using meta-regression. Overall, observational studies showed no effect, whereas challenge studies showed strong and significant protective effects, specifically when major pathogens were introduced into the mammary gland via methods bypassing the teat end. Underlying risk can account for several unmeasured factors, and studies with higher underlying risk found more protective effects of minor pathogens. Larger doses of challenge organisms reduced the protective effect of minor pathogens, and studies with more stringent diagnostic criteria for pathogen IMI identified less protection. Smaller studies (those utilizing fewer than 40 cows) also showed a greater protective effect than larger studies. Copyright © 2012 American Dairy Science Association. Published by Elsevier Inc.     The internal exchange of Jd-Di components on clinopyroxene allow to calibrate the universal clinopyroxene thermobarometer (Ashchepkov, 2001; 2002; 2003) based on experimental data for different systems including peridotitic, eclogitic and igneous which are represented by the augite cumulates as well as salites from the basic granulates from low crust. The equation to the peridotitic system was calibrated on the results of the othopyroxene thermobarometry (Brey. Kohler,1990- McGregor,1974). Modifications allow receiving the better agreement with the orthopyroxene estimates and results of polymineral thermobarometry (Brey, Kohler, 1990) as well as the clinopyroxene thermobarometry (Nimis, Taylor, 2000). The following equation allows working with the peridotite of the mantle lithosphere beneath cratons (30-80) kbar. P(Ash2009)=0.32 (1-0.2*Na/Al+0.012*Fe/Na)*Kd^(3/4)*ToK/(1+Fe)-35*ln(1273/ToK)*(Al+Ti+2.5Na+1.5Fe3+)+(0.9-CaO)*10+Na20/Al2O3*ToK /200 with the second iteration P=(0.0000002* P4 +0.000002+P^3-0.0027*P^2+1.2241*P) Checking of the HP experiments (Brey et al 2008, Walter, 1998; Falloon, Green, 1989; Dasgupta et al., 2007 etc.) it show the precision close to those of the best barometers (McGregor, 1974) ~5-7 but much more wider compositional range including metasomatic associations and The equation for the Al - rich assemblages allow to obtain the pressure estimates fro the megacrystalls and Al - rich peridotitic clinopyroxenes from the mantle xenoliths carried by alkaline basalts: P(Ash2009)=0.035*Kd*ToK(1+2.44Fe)-50.2 ln(1273/ToK) (Al+Ti+Na) Together with the clinopyroxene thermometer (Nimis, Taylor, 2000) it produces the TP estimates very close to those obtained with (Brey, Kohler, 1990) and values of experiments for the melting of basalts. The meagacrystalls show the polybaric origin and their range of estimated pressure corresponds well to determined for mantle peridotites and pyroxenites. The clinopyroxene geotherms for S. Africa (Boyd, Nixon, 1974), Siberia (Boyd et al., 1997) and North America (Kopylova et al., 1998) are reproducing the TP estimates b set the values for all mantle associations simultaneously. Such geotherms show the complex nature and wide ranges for TP gradients and variations of temperatures at the same level for the large pipes. This I results of the joining subduction, conductive and advective TP of several melts portions passed through the mantle columns. The vast heating and metasomatic modifications were manly produced by the The eclogite geotherms for the kimberlites reveal two branches - LT close to subduction and HT close to the TP path pf protokimberlites determined by megacrystalline assemblages. The TP values for the typical subduction eclogites (Dora Maira, East China, Tibet) reveal the range of pressures from 11 to 45 kbars and varying gradients mostly close to LT subduction type.     To investigate the impact of morcellation on survival outcomes of patients affected by undiagnosed uterine sarcoma. This is a retrospective study performed in 8 referral centers of MITO group. Data of women undergoing morcellation for apparent benign uterine myomas who were ultimately diagnosed with stage I uterine sarcoma on final pathology were compared with data of women who did not undergo morcellation. Uterine sarcoma included: leiomyosarcomas (LMS), smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP), low-grade endometrial stromal sarcomas (LG-ESS) and undifferentiated uterine sarcomas (UUS). Two-year survival outcomes were evaluated using Kaplan-Meir and Cox models. Overall 125 patients were identified: 31(24.8%), 21(16.8%) and 73(58.4%) patients had power morcellation during laparoscopy, non power morcellation during open surgery and non morcellation during open procedures, respectively. Considering patients affected by LMS, morcellation did not correlated with disease-free survival. However, patients undergoing either morcellation or power morcellation experienced a 3-fold increase risk of death in comparison to patients who had not morcellation (p=0.02). A trend towards an increase of recurrence was observed for patients undergoing morcellation for STUMP (HR 7.7, p=0.09); while no differences in survival outcomes were observed for patients with LG-ESS and UUS. Our data suggest that morcellation increase the risk of death in patients affected by undiagnosed LMS. Further prospective studies are warranted in order to assess the risk to benefit ratio of power morcellator utilization in patients with apparent benign uterine myomas. Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc.     Two multidrug-resistant Bacteroides fragilis clinical isolates contain and express a novel nim gene, nimJ, that is not recognized by the “universal” nim primers and can confer increased resistance to metronidazole when introduced into a susceptible strain on a multicopy plasmid. HMW615, an appendiceal isolate, contains at least two copies of nimJ on its genome, while HMW616, an isolate from a patient with sepsis, contains one genomic copy of nimJ. B. fragilis NimJ is phylogenetically closer to Prevotella baroniae NimI and Clostridium botulinum NimA than to the other known Bacteroides Nim proteins. The predicted protein structure of NimJ, based on fold recognition analysis, is consistent with the crystal structures derived for known Nim proteins, and specific amino acid residues important for substrate binding in the active site are conserved. This study demonstrates that the “universal” nim primers will not detect all nim genes with the ability to confer metronidazole resistance, but nimJ alone cannot account for the very high metronidazole MICs of these resistant clinical isolates.   5. The P-T conditions of garnet inclusion formation in diamond: thermal expansion of synthetic end-member pyrope

    Pyrope, Mg3Al2Si3O12, due to the abundance of garnet in Earths's upper mantle, has been studied many times. A number of different investigations have measured its physical and thermodynamic properties at high temperature or pressure and, even more recently, under simultaneous high P-T conditions (e.g. Zou et al., 2012). This abstract reports thermal expansion results on pyrope, as part of a much wider project on the determination of the physical properties of garnet, in order to obtain geobarometric information on the formation conditions of its inclusion in diamond. Our experimental approach is based on the elastic method (e.g. Izraeli et al., 1999; Howell et al., 2010; Nestola et al., 2011; Howell et al., 2012), which takes into account the thermoelastic properties of both diamond and any tiny solid phase inclusion within it. The method requires accurate and precise knowledge of thermal expansion and compressibility behavior in order to calculate precisely the pressure and temperature formation conditions of the diamond-inclusion pair. Thus, in order to do this, we measured the thermal expansion of an end-member synthetic single crystal of pyrope up to 1100 K at 52 different temperatures. This was done by measuring the ao unit-cell edge with high precision and accuracy under heating and cooling conditions. This allows excellent experimental reproducibility, which is also checked by monitoring any diffraction peak broadening over the entire range of temperatures. Fitting the temperature-volume data to the thermal expansion equation of Berman (1988), we obtained a room temperature volume-thermal expansion coefficient equal to 2.72(2)×10-5K-1. Using the same pyrope crystal, in situ high-pressure measurements are now in progress in order to determine its isothermal bulk modulus. The use of our results, along with the dK/dT data of Zou et al ( 2012), we plan to calculate the pressure of formation of diamonds containing pyrope-rich garnet inclusions. References Berman, R.G.   6. Elastic geobarometry and the role of brittle failure on pressure release

    Mineral inclusions trapped in their hosts can provide fundamental information about geological processes. Recent developments in elastic geobarometry, for example, allow the retrieval of encapsulation pressures for host-inclusion pairs. In principle this method can be applied to any mineral-mineral pair so long as both the residual pressure on an inclusion (Pinc), and the equations of state for both host and inclusion are either known or determined (Angel et al., 2015). However, Angel et al. (2014) outlined some boundary conditions, one of which was that deformation in the host-inclusion pair has to be purely elastic. Thus this caveat would exclude from analysis all the inclusions that are surrounded by cracks, indicative of brittle deformation, which may result in partial or complete release of the Pinc. If however the effects of cracks surrounding trapped mineral inclusions could be quantitatively modelled, then the applicability of "elastic" geobarometry might be extended to a much larger number of inclusion-host pairs. We report the results of a pilot experiment in which the stress states (i.e. the residual pressure) have been determined for 10 olivine inclusions still entrapped in 5 diamonds. Inclusion pressures were determined from the unit-cell volumes of the olivines measured in-situ in the diamonds by X-ray diffraction. The olivine equations of state were determined from the olivine compositions by in-situ X-ray structure refinement. Values of Pinc range from 0.19 to 0.53 GPa. In order to quantify the degree of brittle failure surrounding the inclusions, the same set of samples were also investigated by synchrotron X-ray micro-tomography (SRXTM at TOMCAT, Swiss LightSource). Preliminary results showed that at the spatial resolution of our experiments (pixel size of 0.34μm), 90% of the inclusions trapped in our set of diamonds were surrounded by cracks. The volume of the cracks has been determined from 3D reconstruction with an accuracy of about 4%. Our results show that crack intensity increases with increase in inclusion size. In addition, the residual pressure decreases with increasing inclusion volume (i.e. with increasing brittle deformation). However, the actual release in pressure can only be estimated knowing the composition and thus the exact equation of state of the infillings of the cracks.   7. Single inclusion piezobarometry confirms high-temperature decompression path for Variscan granulites

    The identification and chemistry of inclusions trapped in host minerals during growth of the host phase have long been used to infer P-T points on metamorphic paths. The determination of the remnant pressure on the inclusion, e.g., using data from X-ray diffractometry, birefringence analysis or Raman spectroscopy, provides an alternative method of barometry using elasticity theory. A remnant pressure in an inclusion is developed because the inclusion and the host have different thermal expansion and compressibilities, and the inclusion does not expand in response to P and T as would a free crystal. Instead it is restricted to expand only as much as the host mineral, and this constriction in volume can result in inclusions exhibiting over-pressures when the host is studied at room conditions. This concept has been known for a long time, but satisfactory quantitative modelling of inclusion-host systems based on non-linear elasticity theory and precise thermal-pressure euqations of state has only recently come available (Angel et al., 2014, 2015), even though it is still restricted to elastically isotropic minerals. No mineral is elastically isotropic, but garnets and diamond are almost so. Calculations show that diamonds trapped as inclusions in host silicates at P and T within the stability field of diamond should exhibit zero pressure when the samples are recovered to room conditions. However, some diamond inclusions in garnets in granulites are reported to exhibit significant residual overpressures (e.g., Kotková et al., 2011). This indicates that the inclusion was elastically re-equilibrated (e.g., by plastic flow in the garnet host) at high temperatures and lower pressures in the stability field of graphite, consistent also with the observed partial inversion of diamond to graphite. In this case, the elastic analysis of the diamond-in-garnet inclusions provides qualitative independent evidence that the Variscan granulites underwent pressure reduction at high temperatures. The extension of single inclusion piezobarometry to elastically anisotropic minerals will allow quantitative analysis of diamonds trapped in other minerals such as kyanite.   8. EosFit-Pinc: a GUI program to calculate pressures in host-inclusion systems

The remnant pressure of the inclusion, measured by X-ray diffractometry, birefringence analysis or Raman spectroscopy, can then be used with the equations of state (EoS) of the host and inclusion to constrain the P and T at entrapment. This concept has been known for a long time, but satisfactory quantitative modelling of inclusion-host systems based on non-linear elasticity theory and precise EoS has only recently come available (Angel et al., 2014, 2015), even though calculations still assume isotropic elastic properties. The elasticity calculations to determine entrapment conditions involving the EoSs for both the host and the inclusion are complex if thermodynamically-realistic EoS are employed. We have therefore developed a simple GUI program, EosFit-Pinc that performs all of the necessary calculations under the assumptions of isotropic elasticity. Equations of state of the host and the inclusion can be loaded as files created by other software in the EosFit7 program suite, or imported directly from thermodynamic databases such as Thermocalc. The complete range of EoS types supported by EosFit-7 are available in EosFit-Pinc. Fluid EoS can be provided in the form of PVT tables, which allows fluid inclusions to be modelled. Once loaded, the EoS of the host and inclusion can be used to calculate the entrapment isomeke from the measured remnant pressure of the inclusion. Or the final pressure can be calculated if the entrapment conditions are known or estimated. Calculations of the isochors of both the host and inclusion phases, and their mutual isomekes, can be performed, and output is provided in a format suitable for external plotting programs.   9. Development of a Precipitation-Runoff Model to Simulate Unregulated Streamflow in the Salmon Creek Basin, Okanogan County, Washington

    Surface water has been diverted from the Salmon Creek Basin for irrigation purposes since the early 1900s, when the Bureau of Reclamation built the Okanogan Project. Spring snowmelt runoff is stored in two reservoirs, Conconully Reservoir and Salmon Lake Reservoir, and gradually released during the growing season. As a result of the out-of-basin streamflow diversions, the lower 4.3 miles of Salmon Creek typically has been a dry creek bed for almost 100 years, except during the spring snowmelt season during years of high runoff. To continue meeting the water needs of irrigators but also leave water in lower Salmon Creek for fish passage and to help restore the natural ecosystem, changes are being considered in how the Okanogan Project is operated. This report documents development of a precipitation-runoff model for the Salmon Creek Basin that can be used to simulate daily unregulated streamflows. The precipitation-runoff model is a component of a Decision Support System (DSS) that includes a water-operations model the Bureau of Reclamation plans to develop to study the water resources of the Salmon Creek Basin. The DSS will be similar to the DSS that the Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Geological Survey developed previously for the Yakima River Basin in central southern Washington. The precipitation-runoff model was calibrated for water years 1950-89 and tested for water years 1990-96. The model was used to simulate daily streamflows that were aggregated on a monthly basis and calibrated against historical monthly streamflows for Salmon Creek at Conconully Dam. Additional calibration data were provided by the snowpack water-equivalent record for a SNOTEL station in the basin. Model input time series of daily precipitation and minimum and maximum air temperatures were based on data from climate stations in the study area. Historical records of unregulated streamflow for Salmon Creek at Conconully Dam do not exist for water years 1950-96. Instead, estimates of historical monthly mean unregulated streamflow based on reservoir outflows and storage changes were used as a surrogate for the missing data and to calibrate and test the model. The estimated unregulated streamflows were corrected for evaporative losses from Conconully Reservoir (about 1 ft3/s) and ground-water losses from the basin (about 2 ft3/s). The total of the corrections was about 9 percent of the mean uncorrected streamflow of 32.2 ft3/s (23,300 acre-ft/yr) for water years 1949-96. For the calibration period, the basinwide mean annual evapotranspiration was simulated to be 19.1 inches, or about 83 percent of the mean annual precipitation of 23.1 inches. Model calibration and testing indicated that the daily streamflows simulated using the precipitation-runoff model should be used only to analyze historical and forecasted annual mean and April-July mean streamflows for Salmon Creek at Conconully Dam. Because of the paucity of model input data and uncertainty in the estimated unregulated streamflows, the model is not adequately calibrated and tested to estimate monthly mean streamflows for individual months, such as during low-flow periods, or for shorter periods such as during peak flows. No data were available to test the accuracy of simulated streamflows for lower Salmon Creek. As a result, simulated streamflows for lower Salmon Creek should be used with caution. For the calibration period (water years 1950-89), both the simulated mean annual streamflow and the simulated mean April-July streamflow compared well with the estimated uncorrected unregulated streamflow (UUS) and corrected unregulated streamflow (CUS). The simulated mean annual streamflow exceeded UUS by 5.9 percent and was less than CUS by 2.7 percent. Similarly, the simulated mean April-July streamflow exceeded UUS by 1.8 percent and was less than CUS by 3.1 percent.     Endometrial stromal tumours (EST) are rare tumours of endometrial stromal origin that account for less than 2% of all uterine tumours. Recent cytogenetic and molecular advances in this area have improved our understanding of ESTs and helped refine their classification into more meaningful categories. Accordingly, the newly released 2014 WHO classification system recognises four categories: endometrial stromal nodule (ESN), low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LGESS), high-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (HGESS) and undifferentiated uterine sarcoma (UUS). At the molecular level, these tumours may demonstrate a relatively simple karyotype with a defining chromosomal rearrangement (as in the majority of ESNs, LGESSs and YWHAE-rearranged HGESS) or demonstrate complex cytogenetic aberrations lacking specific rearrangements (as in UUSs).     Tumour gene expression analysis is useful in predicting adjuvant chemotherapy benefit in early breast cancer patients. This study aims to examine the implications of routine Oncotype DX testing in the U.K. Women with oestrogen receptor positive (ER+), pNO or pN1mi breast cancer were assessed for adjuvant chemotherapy and subsequently offered Oncotype DX testing, with changes in chemotherapy decisions recorded. A subset of patients completed questionnaires about their uncertainties regarding chemotherapy decisions pre- and post-testing. All patients were asked to complete a diary of medical interactions over the next 6 months, from which economic data were extracted to model the cost-effectiveness of testing. Oncotype DX testing resulted in changes in chemotherapy decisions in 38 of 142 (26.8%) women, with 26 of 57 (45.6%) spared chemotherapy and 12 of 85 (14.1%) requiring chemotherapy when not initially recommended (9.9% reduction overall). Decision conflict analysis showed that Oncotype DX testing increased patients' confidence in treatment decision making. Economic analysis showed that routine Oncotype DX testing costs £6232 per quality-adjusted life year gained. Oncotype DX decreased chemotherapy use and increased confidence in treatment decision making in patients with ER+ early-stage breast cancer. Based on these findings, Oncotype DX is cost-effective in the UK setting.

All patients were asked to complete a diary of medical interactions over the next 6 months, from which economic data were extracted to model the cost-effectiveness of testing. Results: Oncotype DX testing resulted in changes in chemotherapy decisions in 38 of 142 (26.8%) women, with 26 of 57 (45.6%) spared chemotherapy and 12 of 85 (14.1%) requiring chemotherapy when not initially recommended (9.9% reduction overall). Decision conflict analysis showed that Oncotype DX testing increased patients' confidence in treatment decision making. Economic analysis showed that routine Oncotype DX testing costs £6232 per quality-adjusted life year gained. Conclusion: Oncotype DX decreased chemotherapy use and increased confidence in treatment decision making in patients with ER+ early-stage breast cancer. Based on these findings, Oncotype DX is cost-effective in the UK setting. PMID:23695023

  13. Spin-orbit coupling calculations with the two-component normalized elimination of the small component method

    A new algorithm for the two-component Normalized Elimination of the Small Component (2cNESC) method is presented and tested in the calculation of spin-orbit (SO) splittings for a series of heavy atoms and their molecules. The 2cNESC is a Dirac-exact method that employs the exact two-component one-electron Hamiltonian and thus leads to exact Dirac SO splittings for one-electron atoms. For many-electron atoms and molecules, the effect of the two-electron SO interaction is modeled by a screened nucleus potential using effective nuclear charges as proposed by Boettger [Phys. Rev. B 62, 7809 (2000), 10.1103/PhysRevB.62.7809]. The use of the screened nucleus potential for the two-electron SO interaction leads to accurate spinor energy splittings, for which the deviations from the accurate Dirac Fock-Coulomb values are on the average far below the deviations observed for other effective one-electron SO operators. For hydrogen halides HX (X = F, Cl, Br, I, At, and Uus) and mercury dihalides HgX2 (X = F, Cl, Br, I) trends in spinor energies and SO splittings as obtained with the 2cNESC method are analyzed and discussed on the basis of coupling schemes and the electronegativity of X.

  14. Comparison of expert and nonexpert swimmers' opinions about the value, potency, and activity of four standard swimming strokes and underwater undulatory swimming.

    Underwater undulatory swimming (UUS) is often perceived to be a nonessential aspect of aquatic propulsion. Given their solid theoretical and practical training in swimming, physical education students should be capable of judging the true value of the "fifth stroke," since it appears to be the most efficient technique in high level, competitive swimming. To compare opinions and connotations associated with the stroke and the four official strokes (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and crawl), 198 students (32 of whom were expert swimmers; M age = 20.6 yr., SD = 1.2), were surveyed using the semantic differential of Osgood, Suci, and Tannenbaum. Although answers of expert and nonexpert swimmers differed significantly (p < .01, except for the breaststroke), participants considered overall that undulatory stroke was less attractive, less powerful, and less rapid than the four surface strokes (d = 2.88 for the expert swimmers). Putting one arm in front of the other and repeating the sequence still remains the most solidly held representation of "the right way" to swim. However, the high observed standard deviations for the underwater undulatory stimulus (SD > or = 1.1 with SD max = 3 for the expert swimmers) attests to the view being less strongly held by swimming specialists.

    At the turn of the 19th and 20th century, on the areas of today northern and western Poland, the railway infrastructure was developing rapidly. In the late 80's of the previous century many of the railway lines, together with the whole infrastructure including bridges, were being closed down. The example of such practices can be the brick bridge located near Nojewo, Voivodeship wielkopolskie. This article presents the technical parameters of these bridges and their damages as well as ideas for the future development of the railway facilities. Na przełomie XIX i XX wieku na terenie dzisiejszej Polski zachodniej i północnej bardzo intensywnie rozwijana była infrastruktura kolejowa. W efekcie tych działań powstała sieć dróg żelaznych o dużym zagęszczeniu. Pod koniec lat 80-tych ubiegłego stulecia wiele z tych linii było stopniowo zamykanych. Na skutek tych przemian wiele linii oraz obiektów z nimi związanych, w tym obiekty mostowe, zostały pozostawione niekorzystnemu działaniu czasu. Przykładem takich wyłączonych z eksploatacji obiektów są mosty i wiadukty położone w okolicy miejscowości Nojewo. Wspomniane obiekty inżynierskie to ceglane konstrukcje sklepione znajdujące się w ciągu linii kolejowej nr 368 łączącej Szamotuły i Międzychód. W artykule zaprezentowano problem rewitalizacji nieużytkowanych mostów kolejowych na przykładzie obiektów w miejscowości Nojewo w województwie wielkopolskim. Opisano podstawowe parametry techniczne mostów oraz ich uszkodzenia. Przedstawiono propozycje zagospodarowania obiektów.

  16. Use of ethnic spices by adults in the United States: An exploratory study.

    Background: The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies has increased in the United States, but little is known about consumers' perceptions of use of such therapies. The purpose of this study was to assess knowledge, perceptions, and predictors of spice use for health promotion among adults in the Midwestern US. Methods: UUsing a cross-sectional study design, adults in the Midwestern US (n = 703) completed a valid and reliable survey which was pilot tested with a small convenience sample of adults (n = 38). The study variables included demographic profile, spice use behavior, perceptions about efficacy of spices, and willingness to use spices. Data were analyzed using SPSS to compute descriptive (e.g. percent and frequencies) and inferential statistics (i.e. logistic regression analyses). Results: Almost half of the participants were interested in learning about health benefits of spices (48%), indicated friends and family members as sources of information on spices (50%),and were willing to use spices as CAM therapies (51%). Most (>50%) of the participants were familiar with or had used eight out of the 10 listed spices. The majority of participants (54%)were currently using one or more spices on a daily basis and believed that ginger (64%), garlic(58%), and cinnamon (56%) could promote good health and wellness. In logistic regression analysis, age, gender (odds ratios [OR] = 1.44 and OR = 1.56), income (OR = 1.77), health status(OR = 2.01), and recommendations from healthcare providers (OR = 5.31 and OR = 3.96) were significant predictors of current spice use and willingness to use spices. Conclusion: Individuals in our study did not use many ethnic spices and were unaware of potential health benefits of spices. Greater awareness of ethnic spices for disease prevention and health promotion are needed in this population.

  17. Internet end-to-end performance monitoring for the High Energy Nuclear and Particle Physics community

    Modern High Energy Nuclear and Particle Physics (HENP) experiments at Laboratories around the world present a significant challenge to wide area networks. Petabytes (1015) or exabytes (1018) of data will be generated during the lifetime of the experiment. Much of this data will be distributed via the Internet to the experiment's collaborators at Universities and Institutes throughout the world for analysis. In order to assess the feasibility of the computing goals of these and future experiments, the HENP networking community is actively monitoring performance across a large part of the Internet used by its collaborators. Since 1995, the pingER projectmore » has been collecting data on ping packet loss and round trip times. In January 2000, there are 28 monitoring sites in 15 countries gathering data on over 2,000 end-to-end pairs. HENP labs such as SLAC, Fermi Lab and CERN are using Advanced Network's Surveyor project and monitoring performance from one-way delay of UDP packets. More recently several HENP sites have become involved with NLANR's active measurement program (AMP). In addition SLAC and CERN are part of the RIPE test-traffic project and SLAC is home for a NIMI machine. The large End-to-end performance monitoring infrastructure allows the HENP networking community to chart long term trends and closely examine short term glitches across a wide range of networks and connections. The different methodologies provide opportunities to compare results based on different protocols and statistical samples. Understanding agreement and discrepancies between results provides particular insight into the nature of the network. This paper will highlight the practical side of monitoring by reviewing the special needs of High Energy Nuclear and Particle Physics experiments and provide an overview of the experience of measuring performance across a large number of interconnected networks throughout the world with various methodologies. In particular, results from each project will be compared and disagreement will be analyzed. The goal is to address issues for improving understanding for gathering and analysis of accurate monitoring data, but the outlook for the computing goals of HENP will also be examined.« less

  18. Mantle Evolution Beneath The Colorado Palteau: Interpreta-tion of The Study of Mineral Concentrate From Kimberlite Pipe Kl-1 Colorado.

    Mineral grains and their intergrowth from the concentrate form the KL1- kimberlite pipe Colorado plateau was analyzed by EPMA and LAM ICP MS in Analytic Center of UIGGM. Garnets reveal nearly continuous trend of the compositions divided into 5 intervals. 1 cumulates from the crust and Sp facie mantle; 2. Gar-Sp lherzolites; 3- Gar- wehrlites, lherzolites and harzburgites; 4- Gar lherzolites and harzburgites; 4. Pyroxenites and Il peri-dotites . They reveal three trend of Ti decrease with the ris- ing Cr content. Those in the inter-growth with the pyroxenes are less in Tio2 as well as the pyroxenes. Discrete large Cpx grains are richer in Na, Al, Cr. TP conditions determined for the clinopyroxenes with Nimis- Taylor, 2001 thermobarometer and barometer Ashchepkov, 2001 reveal the heating from 35 to 40-42 mv/m2 in 30-50kbar interval. The spinels show two compositional intervals 64-50% Cr2O3 and 47-30%. The branch with the essential enrichment to 8% TiO2with the Cr decrease what also suppose the peridotite alteration due to rising of evolving Ti-rich melts. Two descend- ing crystallization lines for the ilmenites suggest the (polybaric) differentiation in two magmatic chambers. The Cr-rich ilmenites and most Cr-rich subcalcis garnets were found in the serpentinized ilmenite harzburgites that probably surround the most deep mag-matic chamber. The Ilm -Q (coesite) intergrowth suggests the deep differenti- ation. Several ilmenites contain up to 11%MnO. Trace elements determined for the clinopyroxenes suppose small decree melting possibly under influence of subducted- related melts having definite U peak and Ta-Nb minimums. Their reaction with peri- dotites with garnet dissolution according to AFC model decrease La/Ybn ration as well as the Pb* and U peak. Two stages of the Ti-rich melt percolations suggested to be accompanied the plum- re-lated melts influence on the peridotite of Wyoming craton keel which was followed with fur-ther followed by submelting of the subducted essentially eclogitic Na-Ti material.   19. PGE and Re-Os Isotope Behaviour in a Subduction-Modified Mantle Wedge: A Fresh Look into the Peridotites from the Ulten Zone, Eastern Alps

    Peridotites in the upper Austroalpine Ulten zone (Eastern Italy) sample the subduction-modified Variscan mantle wedge. Metasomatism of peridotites during four stages of mantle wedge evolution includes: (1) Intrusion of alkaline melts from an inner, subduction-modified wedge and cryptic enrichment of spinel lherzolites (SL); (2) Reaction with siliceous crustal melts after pressure increase, generating coarse-grained garnet amphibole peridotites (GAP); (3) Crystallisation of abundant amphibole (± apatite and dolomite) from residual hydrous fluids during and/or after peak metamorphism recorded by fine-grained GAP; [4] Subsequent influx of crustal fluids, causing retrograde formation of spinel chlorite amphibole peridotites (SAP) [1-5]. SL and coarse GAP are apparently more fertile, whereas fine GAP and SAP retain the most depleted major-element characteristics. Overall, samples fall on partial melting trends consistent with extraction of low degrees of melt (F≤0.15) at 2-1 GPa. SL and coarse GAP have ±flat PGE patterns normalised to Primitive Upper Mantle (PUM), or show small decreases or increases from compatible to incompatible PGE. This suggests retention of primary sulphide liquid at low degrees of melting, during which PGE concentrations are little fractionated [6]. Indeed, broad positive correlations between the PGE suggest a common host, likely sulphide, observed in the samples as assemblages of pn ± po and cpy. Most fine-GAP share these patterns, indicating robustness against massive hydrous fluid influx, while Os/Ir > PUM argue against strong Os scavenging by highly oxidising hydrous fluids. Nevertheless, elevated Ru/IrPUM in a subgroup of samples may indicate a role for spinel addition under oxidising conditions. Most samples have 187Os/188Os >PUM, despite sub-PUM Re/Os, which requires addition of, or isotopic equilibration with, 187Os-rich crustal components, most likely via the precipitation of metasomatic sulphide.   1. Development of utricular otoliths, but not saccular otoliths, is necessary for vestibular function and survival in zebrafish

    We have been studying the consequences of embryonic vestibular dysfunction caused by the monolith (mnl) mutation in zebrafish. mnl is a dominant mutation that specifically inhibits formation of utricular otoliths. However, briefly immobilizing mnl/mnl embryos in agarose with the otic vesicle orientated at certain angles selectively induces or prevents formation of utricular and/or saccular otoliths. With this noninvasive technique, we generated six phenotypic classes of mnl/mnl mutants, designated S-S, U-U, U-S, S-US, U-US, and US-US, depending on which otoliths are present on each side (U, utricular otolith; S, saccular otolith). All mnl/mnl larvae survived through day 10 of development. Thereafter, S-S larvae showed a rapid decline, probably because of starvation, and none survived to adulthood. Survival rates in all other classes of mnl/mnl larvae (those having at least one utricular otolith) were close to normal. The presence or absence of utricular otoliths also correlated with vestibular function during early larval development, as measured by three criteria: First, unlike wild-type larvae, S-S mutant larvae showed almost no detectable counter-rotation of the eyes when tilted tail up or tail down. Second, 95% of S-S mutant larvae never acquired the ability to maintain a balanced dorsal-up posture. Third, although most wild-type larvae responded to gentle prodding by swimming in a straight line, S-S larvae responded by swimming in rapid circles, showing sudden and frequent changes in direction ("zigzagging"), and/or rolling and spiraling. All other phenotypic classes of mnl/mnl larvae behaved normally in these assays. These data demonstrate that bilateral loss of utricular otoliths disrupts the ability to sense gravity, severely impairs balance and motor coordination, and is invariably lethal. The presence of a utricular otolith in at least one inner ear is necessary and sufficient for vestibular function and survival. In contrast, saccular otoliths are dispensable for these functions.   2. X-ray topographic study of diamonds: implications for the genetic nature of inclusions in diamond

    In recent years, several studies have focused on the growth conditions of the diamonds through the analysis of the mineral inclusions trapped in them (Howell, 2012 and references therein). Nevertheless, to obtain rigorous information about chemical and physical conditions of diamond formation, it is crucial to determine if the crystallization of the inclusions occurred before (protogenetic nature), during (syngenetic nature) or after (epigenetic nature) the growth of diamond (Wiggers de Vries et al., 2011). X-ray topography (XRDT) can be a helpful tool to verify the genetic nature of inclusions in diamond. This technique characterizes the extended defects and reconstructs the growth history of the samples (Agrosì et al., 2013 and references therein) and, consequently contributes to elucidation of the relationship between the inclusions and the host-diamond. With this aim a diamond from the Udachnaya kimberlite, Siberia, was investigated. The diamond crystal was the one previously studied by Nestola et al. (2011) who performed in-situ crystal structure refinement of the inclusions to obtain data about the formation pressure. The inclusions were iso-oriented olivines that did not show evident cracks and subsequently could not be considered epigenetic. Optical observations revealed an anomalous birefringence in the adjacent diamond and the inclusions had typical "diamond-imposed cubo-octahedral" shape for the largest olivine. The diffraction contrast study shows that the diamond exhibits significant deformation fields related to plastic post growth deformation. The crystallographic direction of strains was established applying the extinction criterion. Section topographs were taken to minimize the overlapping of the strain field associate with the different defects and revealed that no dislocations nucleated from the olivine inclusions. Generally, when a solid inclusion has been incorporated in the growing crystal, the associated volume distortion can be minimized by means the nucleation of dislocations and/or twinning (Agrosì et al., 2013). In our case, the specific and significant features - the olivine inclusions showing a "diamond imposed cubo-octahedral shape" and no dislocation nucleation - that characterize this sample will be discussed in detail.   3. High-pressure behaviour of Cr-Fe-Mg-Al spinels: applications to diamond geobarometry

    Spinels belonging to the chromite - magnesiochromite - hercynite (FeCr2O4-MgCr2O4-FeAl2O4) system are among the most common inclusions found in diamonds (Stachel and Harris 2008). In particular, although FeCr2O4 and MgCr2O4 components sum to between 85 and 88% of spinels found in diamonds, hercynite FeAl2O4 plays a not negligible role in determining their thermo-elastic properties with concentrations reaching 7-9 % (other minor end-members like MgAl2O4, MgFe2O4 and Fe2O3 rarely reach 2-3% in total, see Lenaz et al. 2009). Recent studies were focused on the determination of the diamond formation pressure by the so-called "elastic method" (see for example Nestola et al. 2011 and references therein). It was demonstrated that accurate and precise thermo-elastic parameters are fundamental to minimize the uncertainty of formation pressure. In this work we have determined the equations of state at room temperature of three synthetic spinel end-members chromite - magnesiochromite - hercynite and one natural spinel crystal extracted from a diamond (from Udachnaya mine, Siberia, Russia) by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in situ at high-pressure. A diamond-anvil cell was mounted on a STADI IV diffractometer equipped with a point detector and motorized by SINGLE software (Angel and Finger 2011). The natural crystal was investigated to test (and possibly validate) the "empirical prediction model", capable to provide bulk modulus and its first pressure derivative only knowing the composition of the spinels found in diamonds. Such prediction model could be used to obtain pressure of formation for the diamond-spinel pair through the elastic method. Details and results will be discussed.   4. Crystallisation condition of the Quaternary basanites of volcanic centre Black Rock, monogenetic field Lunar Crater

    The Lunar Crater volcanic field is located in a tension zone Basin and Range Province (USA). This tension is connected with dives oceanic plate under the continental plate [1]. Lunar Crater consists of flows basalt, basanite, trachybasalt has a different age [2]. In this work we investigate the youngest rock - basanite. The basanite is highly crystalline consisting of about megacrysts (3-10 cm) 30-60 wt% phenocrysts ( 800-1500 µm) and microphenocrysts (100-800 µm) and 40-60% microlites (<100 µm). This type of crystal allocated on the basis of size and different chemical composition. The basanite contains about 40 wt % of olivine phenocrysts and microphenocrysts; 35 % clinopyroxene phenocrysts and microphenocrysts. The other phenocrysts and microphenocrysts are feldspar and spinel. Phenocrysts of olivine plagioclase and clinopyroxene are the features of dissolution. The groundmass (<100 µm) consist of microlites olivine, clinopyroxene sanidine Ti-magnetite. Megacrysts are crystals range from I to l0 cm, are free of inclusions, and are unzoned. Basanite also bearing homeogenic enclaves and amphibole-feldspar-clinopyroxene cumulates. This size 4 mm-1.5 cm. Also in some cumulat indentified mineral renit. We determined pressure of the formation of clinopyroxene assemblage using the clinopyroxene barometer based on the relationship between pressure and the volumes of the unit cell and polyhedron M1 in the mineral structure [3]. The pressure is 18-20 kbar for megacrysts, for phenocrysts 15-18 kbar, for microphenocryst 6-8 kbar, for microlites 1,5-3 kbar. Moreover megacrysts are depleted of REE, compared with phenocrysts. Possibly, megacrysts are formed from the same basanite magma during earlier stage of crystallization [4]. Oxygen barometer data shows that the grains were formed in Redox conditions about FMQ+0.2.     The study of mineral inclusions in diamonds is providing invaluable insights into the geochemistry, geodynamics and geophysics of the Earth's mantle. Over the last two decades, the identification of different inclusion assemblages allowed to recognize diamonds deriving from the deep upper mantle, the transition zone and even the lower mantle. In such research field the in-situ investigation of inclusions using non-destructive techniques is often essential but still remains a challenging task. In particular, conventional 2D imaging techniques (e.g. SEM) are limited to the investigation of surfaces and the lack of access to the third dimension represents a major limitation when trying to extract quantitative information. Another critical aspect is related to sample preparation (cutting, polishing) which is typically very invasive. Nowadays, X-ray computed micro-tomography (X-μCT) allows to overcome such limitations, enabling the internal microstructure of totally undisturbed samples to be visualized in a three-dimensional (3D) manner at the sub-micrometric scale. The final output of a micro-tomography experiment is a greyvalue 3D map of the variations of the X-ray attenuation coefficient (µ) within the studied object. The high X-ray absorption contrast between diamond (almost transparent to X-rays) and the typical inclusion-forming minerals (olivines, garnets, pyroxenes, oxides and sulphides) makes X-μCT a straightforward method for the 3D visualization of inclusions and for the study of their spatial relationships with the diamond host. In this work we applied microfocus X-μCT to investigate silicate inclusions still trapped in diamonds, in order to obtain in-situ information on their exact position, crystal size, shape and X-ray absorption coefficient (which is related to their composition). We selected diamond samples from different deposits containing mainly olivine and garnet inclusions. The investigated samples derived from the Udachnaya pipe (Siberia, Russia), the Jericho Kimberlite (Slave Craton, Canada) and São Luiz-Juina (Brazil). The information obtained by tomographic experiments were combined with X-ray single-crystal diffraction data (see Nestola et al 2011) in order to identify the inclusion parageneses (peridotitic, eclogitic or websteritic) and to finally determine the origin of the studied diamonds. Our results showed that, by combining X-μCT with X-ray diffraction data, it is possible to exactly determine the 3D position of each inclusion together with their crystal size, even though they cannot be detected by using an optical microscope. In addition, such method could have strong crystallographic implications for inclusions still trapped in diamonds as it enables the application of a reliable numerical absorption correction to the 3D intensity data collections.     Kimberlites belong to rare rock type available only within the Earth's cratonic areas and have been a subject of detailed studies because of the great depth of their origin in the mantle. Kimberlitic diamonds often contain pristine inclusions derived from significant depths with different histories of their origins. Many of kimberlitic diamonds were formed in ultramafic (peridotitic) and mafic (eclogitic) environments of the upper mantle. Thus far only a handful of comprehensive in situ studies including single-crystal X-ray diffraction characterization of pristine diamond solid inclusions have been reported (e.g. Kunz et al. 2001, Nestola et al. 2011). In this study five single-crystal solid inclusions from diamonds found in the Quaternary alluvial deposit in NW of the Siberian craton have been investigated using a combination of in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, synchrotron X-ray microfluorescence and X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES). The grains were identified to be a suite of major upper mantle minerals including olivine, enstatite orthopyroxene (opx), C2/c omphacite clinopyroxene (cpx) and majoritic garnet (two grains), indicating eclogitic origin. All five inclusions are chemically homogeneous, do not show compositional zoning, and exhibit very similar major element chemistry, with significant amounts of Mn2+, Ni2+ and Cr3+ incorporated into the crystal structures, suggesting common geologic origin. All samples were studied in situ, while still embedded in the diamond crystals. High quality single-crystal X-ray diffraction data was collected at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory to reveal details of the crystal structures and provide crystal chemical information. Some of the structural characteristics of the solid inclusions were found to be fairly uncommon, e.g. the orthoenstatite exhibits an unusually high Ca2+ content (Carlson et al. 1988), and omphacite occurs as the less common C2/c polymorph (Banno, 1970), both of which are considered signatures of eclogitic high-temperature facies. Fe Ka-edge XANES was used to investigate the oxidation state of iron in the solid inclusions. All of the inclusions show predominantly Fe2+, indicating reducing conditions of formation. The combined results of our spectroscopic and diffraction experiments will be interpreted in the context of the conditions and mechanism of formation (syngenesis vs. protogenesis) and possible retrograde transformation the inclusions may have experienced when transported to the surface.   7. Mantle xenocrysts of Chompolo field of the alkaline volcanics, Aldan shield, South Yakutia.

    New mineralogical and chemical constraints for 10 dikes, veins (360-800m) and pipes (60-110 m) of Chompolo field discovered in 1957-1958 are discussed. Feld is located within Central Aldan Archean and Paleoproterozoic granulite-orthogneiss superterrane of Aldan-Stanovoy Shield, with peak of metamorphism - 2.1-1.9 Ga (Smelov, Timofeev, 2007). Originally (Shilina and Zeitlin 1959) and later (Kostrovitsky and Garanin 1992, Ashchepkov, Vladykin et al. 2001) these rocks were classified as kimberlites by mineralogy including pyrope, Cr spinel, and Cr diopside. Panina and Vladykin (1994), Davies et al, (2006) identified them as lamprophyres and lamproites. The age of Chompolo rocks is pre-Jurassic (Vladimirov et. al., 1989) dated by 40Ar/39Ar as 164.7±1 Ma (233.7±2.2 next plato)(unpublished Ashchepkov). The Rb-Sr isochron for lamprophyre "intrusions 104" indicate later age of 131±4 Ma (Zaitsev, Smelov, 2010). Magmatic bodies (Aldanskaya, Sputnik, Gornaya, Ogonek, Perevalnaya, Kilier-E) were studied during 2012-2013 fieldworks. Most of igneous rocks occur as inequigranular volcanic breccias with micro- or crypto-crystalline groundmass of K feldspar (up to 16.3 wt.% K2O, up to 3.2 wt.% FeO), chlorite, opaque minerals, melanocratic xenocrysts and phenocrysts (garnet, pyroxene, amphibole, Cr spinel, apatite, zircon, mica), and abundant xenogenic fragments of wallrock and crystalline basement. Garnet chemistry records the presence of mantle and crustal material. Mantle garnets lack the common megacryst, wehrlite, and high-temperature lherzolite varieties. Mantle mineralization prevails in the Aldan dike and the Sputnik, Gornaya, and Ogonek pipes, while crustal and elcogitic material is in the Perevalnaya and Kilier-E pipes. The Cr spinel consists of (in wt%) 3.5 to 50.9 Al2O3, 18.6-63.5 wt% Cr2O3, 6.1 to 19.1 MgO, and 0 to 1.61 TiO2. Al and Cr in spinels are in inverse proportion. The Chompolo alkaline volcanic rocks are most similar to the Central Aldan lamproites in trace-element compositions. Anomalously low HFSE (Nb, Ta, Ti), low HREE, and high La/Nb ratios in multi-element spectra indicate high oxygen fugacity and possible crustal contamination (or influence of fluids). Cpx thermobarometry (Nimis et al., 2001) indicate a lithospheric thickness beneath Chompolo field > 130 km (4.1 GPa) supported by P38 monomineral garnet barometer (Grütter et al., 2006). We infer that the Chompolo alkali volcanic rocks are not kimberlites but rather low-Ti alkaline rocks similar to those in the Aldan province. Unlike the Aldan lamproite (Tobuk-Khatystyr field, etc.), the Chompolo rocks contain both crustal and mantle minerals. The compositions of pyrope and Cr spinel, as well as thermobarmetry estimates of lithospheric thickness at the time of magmatic activity, indicate that the Chompolo rocks are diamond-barren.   8. The Diamondiferous Lithospheric Mantle Underlying the Eastern Superior Craton: Evidence From Mantle Xenoliths From the Renard Kimberlites, Quebec

    The Renard kimberlite cluster consists of nine pipes located within a 2km2 area in the northern Otish Mountains of Quebec. The pipes are named Renards 1 to 10, with subsequent investigation revealing Renards 5 and 6 to join at depth (now Renard 65). The pipes are located within the eastern portion of the Superior craton, emplaced into Archean granitic and gneissic host rocks of the Opinica Subprovince (Percival, 2007). Amphibolite grade metamorphism, locally passing into the granulite facies (Percival et al., 1994) occurred in late Archean time (Moorhead et al., 2003). Radiometric dating of the hypabyssal Renard 1 kimberlite indicates Neoproterozoic emplacement, with a 206Pb/238U model age of 631.6±3.5 Ma (2σ) (Birkett et al., 2004). A later study on the main phases in Renard 2 and 3 gave a similar emplacement, with a 206Pb/238U model age of 640.5±2.8Ma (Fitzgerald et al., 2008). This makes this kimberlite district one of the oldest in Canada, similar in eruption age to the Wemindji kimberlites (629±29Ma: Letendre et al., 2003). These events are broadly coeval with the conversion from subduction magmatism to rifting in northern Laurentia (Birkett et al., 2004). The bodies are part of a late Neoproterozoic to Cambrian kimberlite field in eastern Canada (Girard, 2001; Moorhead et al, 2002; Letendre et al., 2003) and fit into the north-east of the Eocambrian/Cambrian Labrador Sea Province of Heaman et al. (2004). To better understand the diamondiferous lithospheric mantle beneath the Renard kimberlites, 116 microxenoliths and xenocrysts were analysed. The samples were dominantly peridotitic, composed primarily of purple garnet, emerald green clinopyroxene and olivine, with a few pink and red garnets. A minor eclogitic component comprises predominantly orange garnets and lesser amounts of clinopyroxene. A detailed study on the major, minor and trace element composition of xenolith minerals is currently underway. All but three of the clinopyroxenes analysed to date plot into the on-craton garnet peridotite field of Ramsay (1992), and follow the garnet peridotite trend of Grütter (2008). Using the single pyroxene geothermobarometer of Nimis and Taylor (2000), the clinopyroxene grains fall along a 38mW/m2 model geotherm. However, the majority fall on the low pressure side of the diamond graphite transition. Initial analysis on the garnet grains show that the majority plots in the on craton lherzolite field (G9A) of Grütter et al. (2006). A smaller eclogite population is also present, along with a minor harzburgitic (G10) population. Using the manganese in garnet thermometer of Creighton (2008) the majority of grains fall in the diamond window (T>950°C). This indicates a currently unexplained disconnect between clinopyroxene and garnet geothermobarometry. The newly developed technique of in situ Pb-Pb dating of clinopyroxene xenocrysts (Schmidberger et al. 2007) was applied to the microxenoliths. Initial results indicate an age of ˜2.7 Ga for the subcratonic lithospheric mantle beneath Renard. This date is significant, coinciding with the beginning of the break up of Vaalbara and a major phase of continental crust generation. Also at 2.7 Ga, Kenorland (including the Superior Province) was formed by accretion of granitoid-greenstone terranes at convergent margins (Barley et al., 2005).

  9. Unshocked Equilibrated H Chondrites: A Common Low-Temperature Record from Fe-Mg Ordering in Orthopyroxene

    The study of the thermal metamorphism of ordinary chondrites through geothermometers can provide significant constraints on the parent body thermal models which remain controversial. We report here results from Fe-Mg ordering closure temperatures (Tc) of orthopyroxenes from eight unshocked equilibrated H-chondrites obtained by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction. The method is based on the fact that cation partitioning in orthopyroxene is sensitive to temperature [1], and makes use of the experimental calibration by Molin et al. [2]. The goal of the investigation is to check how petrographic types relate to cation ordering thermal records. Results: The orthopyroxenes show a very similar degree of Fe-Mg ordering (see Table 1.). The Tc's cluster within the 384+/-48 to 480+/-28 degrees C interval, and show no correlation with petrographic type. The lack of a correlation does not mean that the distribution is random, rather, it appears to be controlled in individual samples by the degree of equilibration. In fact, the higher the petrographic type, the more coherent the results of the grains from individual chondrites. The spread of Tc's in the least equilibrated chondrites could be either a memory of heterogeneous pre-metamorphic records related to individual chondrule histories, or an artefact due to crystal defects. Therefore (1) the thermal records, inferred from the Fe-Mg ordering, are nearly the same for all the equilibrated H-chondrites; (2) the most equilibrated chondrites record distinct Tc values within the larger common Tc range; (3) the spread of Tc in H4's maybe indicative of disequilibrium and merits further study. The closure temperature conveys information on the cooling rate close to its value, regardless of the temperature regimes when the ordering process started. Extrapolation to high temperatures can be made only if the cooling path is constrained. Since we have no data to establish the temperature when ordering began and to decide whether the cooling was linear, we have not attempted quantitative estimates of cooling rates. However we can say that as equilibrated H-chondrites carry similar Tc records, they cooled at similar rates through 380-480 degrees C. However, the k(sub)D's (i.e., the intracrystalline Fe-Mg distribution coefficient) range 0.029 to 0.054, suggesting that H-chondrites cooled in petrogenetic environments intermediate between those of volcanic [3] and granulitic rocks [3,4]. Conclusion: Our results provide the following constraints: (1) Equilibrated H-chondrites, regardless the petrographic type, were located in petrogenetic environments characterized by similar temperature-time conditions when cooling through 380-480 degrees C, and, in terms of terrestrial environments, intermediate between those of volcanic and granulitic facies. (2) Different petrographic types reflect distinct metamorphic thermal regimes. Thus, to account for constraint (1), petrographic type was determined at temperatures above the 380-480 degrees C interval. This implies that equilibrated H-chondrites were placed in different geological environments characterized by distinct temperature-time regimes when still above this temperature range. In the case of the least equilibrated chondrites, for which the two events could coincide.   10. The Universal Cpx Jd-Di barometer for mantle peridotite eclogite and pyroxenites and it using for the mantle petrology

    The Jd-Di exchange in clinopyroxenes used for the calibration of pyroxene barometer (Ashchepkov, 2000;2002; Ashchepkov et al 2010;2011;2012) was transformed to make one universal equation for mantle peridotite eclogites and pyroxenites. The original barometer (Ashchepkov, 2002) calibrated on pressures produced by Opx barometry (McGregor , 1974) was transformed (Ashchepkov et al ., 2004; 2010; 2011) to satisfy the increasing data bases for the mantle xenoliths and experimental values 530 in peridotitic and 650 in elcogitic systems . The obtained difference Pd =Pcpx- Pexp were studied for the dependence on each component and their combination . Instead of the common activities we used the temperature-dependent empirical equations. The three separate equations for the common peridotites, pyroxenites and eclogites (Ashchepkov et al., 2010) were checked and complex To and Al-Na-Fe dependent universal coefficients were received. The KD is determined as follows: KD=Na/AlCr*Mg/Ca The logarithmic dependence between P and KD was transformed to a linear one. Final pressure equations are: AlCr=(Al-0.01) *((T-600)/700)**0.75+Cr*(ToK-100)/1000+(4*Ti-0.0125)/ (T0-801)*650 +0.55*((Fe-0.23) *(T0-900)/10000-K) P=0.26*(5+12*(Al+0.30*Na)KD* ToK**0.75 /(1+Fe+ Fe*(ToK-600)/1000)-ln(1273/ ToK))*40*(7*Na-Al-15*Ti+10*Cr+Mg/4)+7.5*Si-20*( Al*Na*Mg/Ca/(Al-2*Ti+Na-2*Fe/(Fe+Mg))+50*(Na+0.1*Al-2*Ti+0.05*Mg-0.22*Ca-0.7*Na)/Ca). Obtained equation in combination with the (Nimis,Taylor, 2000) thermometer allow to reconstruct position of the magma feeder systems of the alkali basaltic magma withing the mantle diapirs in modern platforms like in Vitim plateau (Ashchepkov et al., 2011) and now was applicated to reconstruct the deep seated magma conduits beneath the mountain collision systems, island arcs ocean plateaus etc. This equation allows to receive the positions of the major groups of eclogites mantle sections and to find out the regularities of their behavior. The Fe rich eclogites commonly trace he boundary between the lower upper part of subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) at 3 -4 GPa marking pyroxenite eclogites layer. Ca- rich eclogites and especially grospydites in SCLM beneath Precambrian kimberlites occurs near pyroxenite layer but in younger mantle sections they became common in the lower parts marking presence of the subducted sediments. The Mg Cr- less group eclogites commonly diamondiferous and referring to the ancient island arc complexes are also common in the middle part of mantle sections and near 5-6 GPa. The group is often dominated in the young kimberlites and sometimes is highly diamondiferous. Commonly P-Fe# for eclogites in the lower SCLM part show rising Fe# with decreasing pressures which very of then reflect the differentiation of the magmatic systems commonly rather significant. Commonly the Fe#-values for the eclogites show that they can't be simple subucted oceanic basalts but material remelted not only during the low angle "hot"subduction but also under the influence of the kimberlite melts including protokimberlite magmas. The Mg - rich and Fe rich pyroxenites also show the extending in pressures trends which suggest the anatexic melting under the influence of volatiles or under the plum magma hybridization.   11. New calibration of Ji - Di clinopyroxene barometer for Eclogites, pyroxenites and peridotites and eclogite - pyroxenite mantle geotherms.

    Checking the universe clinopyroxene JD-Di barometer on the experimental system showed that it better to use the separate schemes for the eclogite and peridotite systems. The clinopyroxene barometer based on the internal exchange of Jd-Di components for the Al. It allow using the temperature calculated with the (Krogh, 1988) method for the The barometer was calibrated on the 200 experimental runs for the eclogitic system (Yaxley,Brey,2004; Spandler ea, 2008; Konzett ea, 2008; Hanrahan ea, 2009 and references there in). It reproduces the pressure range to 120 kbar with the r= 0.91 (S=8) for 180 experimental runs. P(Ash2010 Ecl)=0.32 (1-0.215*Na/Al+0.012*Fe/Na)*Kd^3/4*ToK/(1+Fe)*(1+5*Fe)- 35*ln(1273/ToK)*(Al+Ti+2.5Na+1.5Fe3+)+(0.9-xx(2,8))*10+xx(2,9)/xx(2,3)* ToK /200-1.5 P1=(0.00004*P^3-0.0091*P^2+1.3936*P)*1.05 Where KD = Na*Mg/xAlCr*/Ca; XAlCr= Al+Cr+4*Ti-K-(Fe-0.21)*0.75 The tests on the natural associations form the eclogitic xenoliths with and without the diamonds and omphacite diamond inclusions (Taylor ea, 2006; Shatsky ea, 2008; Jacob ea, 2009) have shown very good agreement with the position of the Graphite -Diamond (Kennedy, Kennedy, 1977) boundary and to the conductive geotherms which are close to 34-36mvm-2 geotherms while for the South Africa they are more close to 40mvm-2 geotherms. For the zonal omphacites it produces the range of the nearly equal pressures or more rarely advective paths. The levels of the maximum enrichments in eclogites which are close to 50-60 kabr beneath 360ma Siberian kimberlites coincides with the levels of heating according to the monomineral and polymineral thermobarometry. South Africa eclogite geotherms often split into 2-3 branches: subductional (35) conductive (40) for Paleozoic-Mesozoic mantle lithosphere and the hottest advective close o 45 mv/m-2. They allow to work with the wide range of the pyroxenite compositions giving the practically coinciding PT parameters with the pressures determined for ilmenites and chromites as well as the (Brey, Kohler, 1900) pressure estimates. The PT parameters reconstructed for the mantle lithosphere beneath > 120 pipes from Yakutia , Baltica, Africa , North America and other world wide kimberlites have shown very good coincidence with the estimates from the other methods of monomineral (Nimis, Taylor, 2000; McGregor, 1974; Ashchepkov ea. 2009 ) and Gar-Opx barometers (Brey, Kohler, 1900; Nickel, Green, 1975). For the garnet and spinel xenoliths of the alkali basalts representing fertile or regenerated peridotites with high Al content of the clinopyroxenes the modified equation allows to determine the pressures together for megacrysts, pyroxeniets and peridotites using the following equation P=0.035*Kd*ToK)/(1+3.5*Fe)- 50*ln(1273/(ToK-100)*(Al+5*Na-Ti+2*Cr) -(Na-0.050)*(ToK-1200)*(Ca-0.85)/7000+5 Where KD = Na*Mg/xAlCr*/Ca; xAlCr= (Al+Si-2)*((ToK-700)/900)^0.35+Cr+Fe3-K +(4*Ti-0.0125)/(ToK-600)*700 +(Fe-0.21)*(ToK-400)/17000 This equations also very good reproduce the experimental runs in the pressure interval from 10 to 80 kbar but better to 50 kbars (R=0.92) (S=5) for 170 experimental runs (Putirka ea, 1996; Fallon ea, 1999; Taylor ea, 1998; Drapper Green, 1997; Lambart ea 2009) in this pressure range.
