  1. Exact results of 1D traffic cellular automata: The low-density behavior of the Fukui-Ishibashi model

    The maximum entropy states of the cellular automata models for traffic flow in a single-lane with no anticipation are presented and discussed. The exact analytical solutions for the low-density behavior of the stochastic Fukui-Ishibashi traffic model were obtained and compared with computer simulations of the model. An excellent agreement was found.

  2. [Civil engineering education at the Imperial College of Engineering in Tokyo: an analysis based on Ayahiko Ishibashi's memoirs].

    The Imperial College of Engineering (ICE or Kobu-Daigakko) in Tokyo, founded in 1873 under the auspices of the Ministry of Public Works, was one of the most prominent modern institutions of engineering education in early Meiji Japan. Previous studies have revealed that the ICE offered large scale practical training programs at enterprises of the Ministry, which sometimes lasted several months, and praised their ideal combination of theory and practice. In reality, it has been difficult to evaluate the quality of education at the ICE mainly because of scarcity of sources. ICE students published a collection of memoirs for alumni members, commemorating the fiftieth-year of the history of the Tokyo Imperial University. Drawing on the previously neglected collection of students' memoires, this paper appraises the education of civil engineering offered by the ICE. The paper also compares this collection with other official records of the college, and confirms it as a reliable source, even though it contains some minor errors. The author particularly uses the memoirs by Ayahiko Ishibashi, one of the first graduates from its civil engineering course, who left sufficient reminiscences on education that he received. This paper, as a result, illustrates that the main practical training for the students of civil engineering was limited to designing process, including surveying. Furthermore, practical training that Ishibashi received at those enterprises often lacked a plan, and its effectiveness was questionable.

  4. Tsunami Numerical Simulation for Hypothetical Giant or Great Earthquakes along the Izu-Bonin Trench

    We performed tsunami numerical simulations from various giant/great fault models along the Izu-Bonin trench in order to see the behavior of tsunamis originated in this region and to examine the recurrence pattern of great interplate earthquakes along the Nankai trough off southwest Japan. As a result, large tsunami heights are expected in the Ryukyu Islands and on the Pacific coasts of Kyushu, Shikoku and western Honshu. The computed large tsunami heights support the hypothesis that the 1605 Keicho Nankai earthquake was not a tsunami earthquake along the Nankai trough but a giant or great earthquake along the Izu-Bonin trench (Ishibashi and Harada, 2013, SSJ Fall Meeting abstract). The Izu-Bonin subduction zone has been regarded as so-called 'Mariana-type subduction zone' where M>7 interplate earthquakes do not occur inherently. However, since several M>7 outer-rise earthquakes have occurred in this region and the largest slip of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake (M9.0) took place on the shallow plate interface where the strain accumulation had considered to be a little, a possibility of M>8.5 earthquakes in this region may not be negligible. The latest M 7.4 outer-rise earthquake off the Bonin Islands on Dec. 22, 2010 produced small tsunamis on the Pacific coast of Japan except for the Tohoku and Hokkaido districts and a zone of abnormal seismic intensity in the Kanto and Tohoku districts. Ishibashi and Harada (2013) proposed a working hypothesis that the 1605 Keicho earthquake which is considered a great tsunami earthquake along the Nankai trough was a giant/great earthquake along the Izu-Bonin trench based on the similarity of the distributions of ground shaking and tsunami of this event and the 2010 Bonin earthquake. In this study, in order to examine the behavior of tsunamis from giant/great earthquakes along the Izu-Bonin trench and check the Ishibashi and Harada's hypothesis, we performed tsunami numerical simulations from fault models along the Izu-Bonin trench

  5. A New Interpretation of Effects of the Probabilistic Delayed Start on the One-Dimensional Traffic Flow

    The effect of the probabilistic delayed start on the one-dimensional traffic flow is investigated on the basis of several models. Analogy with the degeneracy of the states and its resolution, as well as that with the mathematical procedures adopted for them, is utilized. The perturbation is assumed to be proportional to the probability of the delayed start, and the perturbation function is determined so that imposed conditions are fulfilled. The obtained formulas coincide with those previously derived on the basis of the mean-field analyses of the Nagel-Schreckenberg and Fukui-Ishibashi models, and reproduce the cellular automaton simulation results.

  6. Head-on collisions of unequal mass black holes in D=5 dimensions

    We study head-on collisions of unequal mass black hole binaries in D=5 spacetime dimensions, with mass ratios between 1:1 and 1:4. Information about gravitational radiation is extracted by using the Kodama-Ishibashi gauge-invariant formalism and details of the apparent horizon of the final black hole. We present waveforms, total integrated energy and momentum for this process. Our results show surprisingly good agreement, within 5% or less, with those extrapolated from linearized, point-particle calculations. Our results also show that consistency with the area theorem bound requires that the same process in a large number of spacetime dimensions must display new features.

    In a weakly coupled gravity theory in the anti-de Sitter space, local states in the bulk are linear superpositions of Ishibashi states for a crosscap in the dual conformal field theory. The superposition structure can be constrained either by the microscopic causality in the bulk gravity or the bootstrap condition in the boundary conformal field theory. We show, contrary to some expectation, that these two conditions are not compatible to each other in the weak gravity regime. As a result, we also present an evidence to show that bulk local states in three dimensions are not organized by the Virasoromore » symmetry.« less

  8. Multiferroic properties and frequency dependent coercive field in BiFeO3-LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 thin films

    The effect of LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 (LMCO) adding on structural, magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties of BiFeO3 is presented. X ray diffraction and Raman investigation allowed the identification of a structural transition and permitted to shed more light on the influence of LCMO addition. By varying LMCO concentration, highest remnant polarization (Pr) and coercive field (Ec) with a likely square hysteresis loop are obtained for 10 mol% addition. With increasing concentration to 20 mol%, a change of P-E shape, a decrease of both Pr and Ec, and a frequency dependence of Ec are observed. The results are approached with both Ishibashi-Orihara and Du-Chen models.

  9. Universal Features of Left-Right Entanglement Entropy.

    We show the presence of universal features in the entanglement entropy of regularized boundary states for (1+1)D conformal field theories on a circle when the reduced density matrix is obtained by tracing over right- or left-moving modes. We derive a general formula for the left-right entanglement entropy in terms of the central charge and the modular S matrix of the theory. When the state is chosen to be an Ishibashi state, this measure of entanglement is shown to precisely reproduce the spatial entanglement entropy of a (2+1)D topological quantum field theory. We explicitly evaluate the left-right entanglement entropies for the Ising model, the tricritical Ising model and the su[over ^](2)_{k} Wess-Zumino-Witten model as examples.

    Here, we formulate a minimum requirement for CFT operators to be localized in the dual AdS. In any spacetime dimensions, we show that a general solution to the requirement is a linear superposition of operators creating spherical boundaries in CFT, with the dilatation by the imaginary unit from their centers. This generalizes the recent proposal by Miyaji et al. for bulk local operators in the three dimensional AdS. We show that Ishibashi states for the global conformal symmetry in any dimensions and with the imaginary di-latation obey free field equations in AdS and that incorporating bulk interactions require their superpositions.more » We also comment on the recent proposals by Kabat et al., and by H.   11. Morphology-dependent photo-induced polarization recovery in ferroelectric thin films

    We investigate photo-induced ferroelectric domain switching in a series of Pb(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (PZT/LSMO) bilayer thin films with varying surface morphologies by piezoresponse force microscopy under light illumination. We demonstrate that reverse poled ferroelectric regions can be almost fully recovered under laser irradiation of the PZT layer and that the recovery process is dependent on the surface morphology on the nanometer scale. The recovery process is well described by the Kolmogorov-Avrami-Ishibashi model, and the evolution speed is controlled by light intensity, sample thickness, and initial write voltage. Our findings shed light on optical control of the domain structure in ferroelectric thin films with different surface morphologies.

  12. Quantum effects in amplitude death of coupled anharmonic self-oscillators

    Coupling two or more self-oscillating systems may stabilize their zero-amplitude rest state, therefore quenching their oscillation. This phenomenon is termed "amplitude death." Well known and studied in classical self-oscillators, amplitude death was only recently investigated in quantum self-oscillators [Ishibashi and Kanamoto, Phys. Rev. E 96, 052210 (2017), 10.1103/PhysRevE.96.052210]. Quantitative differences between the classical and quantum descriptions were found. Here, we demonstrate that for quantum self-oscillators with anharmonicity in their energy spectrum, multiple resonances in the mean phonon number can be observed. This is a result of the discrete energy spectrum of these oscillators, and is not present in the corresponding classical model. Experiments can be realized with current technology and would demonstrate these genuine quantum effects in the amplitude death phenomenon.

  13. Elastic anomaly and order-disorder nature of multiferroic barium sodium niobate studied by broadband brillouin scattering

    The successive phase transitions of multiferroic barium sodium niobate, Ba2NaNb5O15 (BNN), were studied by Brillouin scattering. The LA, TA modes, and central peak were measured in a large temperature range from room temperature up to 750 °C. In the vicinity of a ferroelectric phase transition at about TC = 585 °C from the prototypic tetragonal 4/mmm to ferroelectric 4mm phases, elastic anomaly was observed for LA and TA modes. In addition, the order-disorder nature was observed by the temperature dependence of a central peak. For further cooling another elastic anomaly was also observed in the vicinity of a ferroelastic incommensurate phase transition at about TIC = 285 °C into orthorhombic 2mm phase with the appearance of incommensurate modulation. The large thermal hysteresis of elastic anomaly near TIC can be attributed the typical feature of the type III incommensurate phase transition predicted recently by Ishibashi and Iwata (2013 J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 82 044703).

  15. Nonspherically symmetric black string perturbations in the large dimension limit

    We consider nonspherically symmetric perturbations of the uncharged black string/flat black brane in the large dimension (D) limit of general relativity. We express the perturbations in a simplified form using variables introduced by Ishibashi and Kodama. We apply the large D limit to the equations and show that this leads to decoupling of the equations in the near-horizon and asymptotic regions. It also enables use of matched asymptotic expansions to obtain approximate analytical solutions and to analyze stability of the black string/brane. For a large class of nonspherically symmetric perturbations, we prove that there are no instabilities in the large D limit. For the rest, we provide additional matching arguments that indicate that the black string/brane is stable. In the static limit, we show that for all nonspherically symmetric perturbations, there is no instability. This is proof that the Gross-Perry-Yaffe mode for semiclassical black hole perturbations is the unique unstable mode even in the large D limit. This work is also a direct analytical indication that the only instability of the black string is the Gregory-Laflamme instability.

  16. Investigation of the ferroelectric switching behavior of P(VDF-TrFE)-PMMA blended films for synaptic device applications

    Synaptic plasticity can be mimicked by electronic synaptic devices. By using ferroelectric thin films as gate insulator for thin-film transistors (TFT), channel conductance can be defined as the synaptic plasticity, and gradually modulated by the variations in amounts of aligned ferroelectric dipoles. Poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)]-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blended films are chosen and their switching kinetics are investigated by using the Kolmogorov-Avrami-Ishibashi model. The switching time for ferroelectric polarization is sensitively influenced by the amplitude of applied electric field and volumetric ratio of ferroelectric beta-phases in the P(VDF-TrFE)-PMMA films. The switching time of the P(VDF-TrFE) increases with decreasing the pulse amplitude and/or the ratio of ferroelectric beta-phases by incorporation of PMMA. The activation electric field is also found to increase as the increase in blended amount of PMMA. Synapse TFTs are fabricated using the P(VDF-TrFE)-PMMA as gate insulator and In-Ga-Zn-O active channels. The drain currents of the synapse TFTs gradually increased when the voltage pulse signals with given duration are repeatedly applied. This suggests that the synaptic weights can be modulated by the number of external pulse signals, and that the proposed synapse TFT can be applied for mimicking the operations of bio-synapses.

    Congenital scoliosis is a condition characterized by spinal curvature beyond the physiological norm. The molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of congenital scoliosis are beginning to be clarified; however, the genes related to congenital scoliosis are still unknown. We herein report the results of a comprehensive analysis of gene expression in the spines from a rat model of congenital kyphoscoliosis obtained using DNA microarrays. The rats (Ishibashi rats, IS) showed decreased expression levels of genes associated with bone formation, such as those associated with retinol metabolism and type I collagen. Interestingly, the flexion sites of the IS rats showed low expression levels of tropomyosin receptor kinases (Trks: TrkA, TrkB, and TrkC), which belong to the neurotrophic receptor tyrosine kinase family. Moreover, this phenomenon was observed only in the flexion sites of the spine, and the expression levels of Trks in other parts of the spine in these rats were normal. The decreased expression levels of Trks were observed at both the mRNA and protein levels. We also observed that the number of Trk-immunopositive cells in the lumbar spine in the IS rats was lower than that in wild-type rats. These findings indicate that the Trks have an important function in regulating normal bone formation, and provide a molecular explanation for the pathogenesis of congenital kyphoscoliosis.

  18. Total Geomagnetic Survey on Suruga Bay, on the Pacific cost, Shizuoka, Japan, the second series report.

    In 2009 to 2014, total geomagnetic and geological surveys by School of Marine Science & Technology, Tokai University, were conducted on Suruga Bay, located on the Pacific coast of Honshu in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan, where a large thrust earthquake, often referred to as the Tokai earthquake, has been supposed to occur soon (Ishibashi, 1981). Suruga Bay area, where the Philippine Sea plate subducts beneath Japan, had some local magnetic anomalies on the overriding plate side. The past investigation of ship-borne survey conducted in Suruga Bay area is geomagnetic anomaly data of the Hydrographic Department of the Maritime Safety Agency in 1997. Detailed geomagnetic surveys carried out in the Suruga Bay area, is 50 km x 35km in S-N and W-E, respectively. Total geomagnetic anomaly values range from +100nT to +600nT. In this report, we carried out newly geomagnetic survey lines which costal region on Suruga Bay. The following results were found. (1) The costal region of Izu Peninsula in Northern part of Izu-Ogasawara arc is indicated high geomagnetic anomaly. This cause is regarded as something to come near to some volcanos. (2) And costal region of the Fujigawa fault system in the Sourath Fossa Magna region is indicated high geomagnetic anomaly. We present features of total geomagnetic anomalies on and around Suruga Bay with the results of inversion.

  19. Eta Carinae, the Integral Nebula and the Homunculus Observations

    In the past two years, observations of Eta Carina have revealed much new and very exciting information. Augusto Damineli noted a 5.5 year period in the visible and near infrared spectroscopy. Michael Corcoran and Bish Ishibashi noticed modulation of the x-ray fluxes with various periodicities around 90 days before and after the xray and radio minimum in December 1997. Observations, done in March 1998 under proposal 7302 {Davidson et al} from 1640A to 10400A using STIS in GXXXM mode and the 50x0.1 arcsecond slit, revealed much new information in the immediate regions of Eta Carina. The slit orientation was slightly off the major axis of the Homunculus, but passed through Weigelt components B and D. Bish Ishibashi and Ted Gull have reduced the data and provided it to various team members. Torgil Zethson has identified well over 90 percent of the emission lines in the March 1998 spectrum and finds most to be FeII emission lines. Based upon the past ground-based history of Eta Carina, we expected that FeIII and other high ionization states would return within the year. STIS GTO observations {Ted Gull, PI program 8036} characterized a bright internal emission nebula by turning the slit 90 degrees for visit 1 and studying the changes in spectrum as the FeIII lines appear by using visit 2 with the identical slit orientation from March 19, 1998. Data from the four visits of STIS to Eta Carinae between December 1997 and February 1999 demonstrate that the star has brightened by a factor of two during that interval and that the immediate nebulosity has tripled in surface brightness. Moreover a small circular nebular shell, seen in multiple [Fe II] lines has disappeared and the opacity in the 2000 to 3000A region obscuring the star has lifted considerable as the Fe II is converting to Fe III. Given the strong changes in the spectrum, we have chosen to use the six orbits in two visits. Visit 1 will be a precise repeat of the March 1998 and February 1999 observations, adjusted

  20. Statistical electric field and switching time distributions in PZT 1Nb2Sr ceramics: Crystal- and microstructure effects

    Dispersive polarization response of ferroelectric PZT ceramics is analyzed assuming the inhomogeneous field mechanism of polarization switching. In terms of this model, the local polarization switching proceeds according to the Kolmogorov-Avrami-Ishibashi scenario with the switching time determined by the local electric field. As a result, the total polarization reversal is dominated by the statistical distribution of the local field magnitudes. Microscopic parameters of this model (the high-field switching time and the activation field) as well as the statistical field and consequent switching time distributions due to disorder at a mesoscopic scale can be directly determined from a set of experiments measuring the time dependence of the total polarization switching, when applying electric fields of different magnitudes. PZT 1Nb2Sr ceramics with Zr/Ti ratios 51.5/48.5, 52.25/47.75, and 60/40 with four different grain sizes each were analyzed following this approach. Pronounced differences of field and switching time distributions were found depending on the Zr/Ti ratios. Varying grain size also affects polarization reversal parameters, but in another way. The field distributions remain almost constant with grain size whereas switching times and activation field tend to decrease with increasing grain size. The quantitative changes of the latter parameters with grain size are very different depending on composition. The origin of the effects on the field and switching time distributions are related to differences in structural and microstructural characteristics of the materials and are discussed with respect to the hysteresis loops observed under bipolar electrical cycling.

    In order to verify the direct plasma injection scheme (DPIS), an acceleration test was carried out in 2001 using a radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) heavy ion linear accelerator (linac) and a CO2-laser ion source (LIS) (Okamura et al., 2002) [1]. The accelerated carbon beam was observed successfully and the obtained current was 9.22 mA for C4+. To confirm the capability of the DPIS, we succeeded in accelerating 60 mA carbon ions with the DPIS in 2004 (Okamura et al., 2004; Kashiwagi and Hattori, 2004) [2,3]. We have studied a multi-beam type RFQ with an interdigital-H (IH) cavity that has a power-efficient structure in the low energy region. We designed and manufactured a two-beam type RFQ linac as a prototype for the multi-beam type linac; the beam acceleration test of carbon beams showed that it successfully accelerated from 5 keV/u up to 60 keV/u with an output current of 108 mA (2×54 mA/channel) (Ishibashi et al., 2011) [4]. We believe that the acceleration techniques of DPIS and the multi-beam type IH-RFQ linac are technical breakthroughs for heavy-ion inertial confinement fusion (HIF). The conceptual design of the RF linac with these techniques for HIF is studied. New accelerator-systems using these techniques for the HIF basic experiment are being designed to accelerate 400 mA carbon ions using four-beam type IH-RFQ linacs with DPIS. A model with a four-beam acceleration cavity was designed and manufactured to establish the proof of principle (PoP) of the accelerator.

    To minimize forest fires in tropical area is extremely important, because the fire has a large impact on global warming, biodiversity, and human society. In the previous study, Shimada and Ishibashi monitored the ground-water lever from the value of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) obtained in Kalimantan Island to predict where the forest fires will happen. We have developed a method to map the forest fire risk by calculating the value of Modified Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index 2 (MSAVI2). Moreover, we investigated the relation between the distance from a road as an artificial factor and the occurrence of the fire.First, calculating the MSAVI2 from Landsat 7 and 8 images of August, 2015 around Martapura in South Sumatra, Indonesia, we mapped the area where the plants were stressed. Next, we checked the degrees of matching between the area of low MSAVI2 and the forest fire points.As a result, half of the fires happened in the area having the MSAVI2 values of 0.20 to 0.35. When we focused on only the area which is over 5 kilometers far from a road, the degrees of matching became higher; it rose up to 62 percent.Those results indicate that the fire risks relate to the dry area calculated as low MSAVI2 in the case with less human activities. We need to consider an effect of artificial factors to estimate the whole risk of forest fire.In conclusion, the map of forest fire risk by calculating the value of MSAVI2 is applicable to an area with less artificial factor, while we have to take the effect of artificial fire factor into the consideration.

  3. Overview of Historical Earthquake Document Database in Japan and Future Development

    In Japan, damage and disasters from historical large earthquakes have been documented and preserved. Compilation of historical earthquake documents started in the early 20th century and 33 volumes of historical document source books (about 27,000 pages) have been published. However, these source books are not effectively utilized for researchers due to a contamination of low-reliability historical records and a difficulty for keyword searching by characters and dates. To overcome these problems and to promote historical earthquake studies in Japan, construction of text database started in the 21 century. As for historical earthquakes from the beginning of the 7th century to the early 17th century, "Online Database of Historical Documents in Japanese Earthquakes and Eruptions in the Ancient and Medieval Ages" (Ishibashi, 2009) has been already constructed. They investigated the source books or original texts of historical literature, emended the descriptions, and assigned the reliability of each historical document on the basis of written age. Another database compiled the historical documents for seven damaging earthquakes occurred along the Sea of Japan coast in Honshu, central Japan in the Edo period (from the beginning of the 17th century to the middle of the 19th century) and constructed text database and seismic intensity data base. These are now publicized on the web (written only in Japanese). However, only about 9 % of the earthquake source books have been digitized so far. Therefore, we plan to digitize all of the remaining historical documents by the research-program which started in 2014. The specification of the data base will be similar for previous ones. We also plan to combine this database with liquefaction traces database, which will be constructed by other research program, by adding the location information described in historical documents.   4. Rasagiline and selegiline suppress calcium efflux from mitochondria by PK11195-induced opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pore: a novel anti-apoptotic function for neuroprotection.

    Rasagiline and selegiline, inhibitors of type B monoamine oxidase (MAO-B), protect neurons from cell death in cellular and animal models. Suppression of mitochondrial membrane permeabilization and subsequent activation of apoptosis cascade, and induction of anti-apoptotic, pro-survival genes are proposed to contribute the anti-apoptotic function. Rasagiline suppresses neurotoxin- and oxidative stress-induced membrane permeabilization in isolated mitochondria, but the mechanism has been not fully clarified. In this paper, regulation of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore by rasagiline and selegiline was examined in apoptosis induced by PK11195, a ligand of the outer membrane translocator protein 18 kDa (TSPO) in SH-SY5Y cells. The pore opening was quantitatively measured using a simultaneous monitoring system for calcium (Ca(2+)) and superoxide (O2(-)) (Ishibashi et al. in Biochem Biophys Res Commun 344:571-580, 2006). The association of the pore opening with Ca(2+) efflux and ROS increase was proved by the inhibition of Bcl-2 overexpression and cyclosporine A treatment. Potency to release Ca(2+) was correlated with the cytotoxicity of TSPO antagonists, PK11195, FGIN-1-27 and protoporphyrin IX, whereas a TSPO agonist, 4-chloro-diazepamine, did not significantly increase Ca(2+) or cause cell death. Rasagiline and selegiline inhibited mitochondrial Ca(2+) efflux through the mitochondrial permeability transition pore dose dependently. Ca(2+) efflux was confirmed as the initial signal in mitochondrial apoptotic cascade, and the suppression of Ca(2+) efflux may account for the neuroprotective function of rasagiline and selegiline. The quantitative measurement of Ca(2+) efflux can be applied to determine anti-apoptotic activity of neuroprotective compounds. The role of mitochondrial Ca(2+) release in neuronal death and also in neuroprotection by MAO-B inhibitors is discussed.

    Cryptococcosis is an infectious disease caused by pathogenic fungi, such as Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii. The ceramide structure (methyl-d18:2/h18:0) of C. neoformans glucosylceramide (GlcCer) is characteristic and strongly related to its pathogenicity. We recently identified endoglycoceramidase-related protein 1 (EGCrP1) as a glucocerebrosidase in C. neoformans and showed that it was involved in the quality control of GlcCer by eliminating immature GlcCer during the synthesis of GlcCer (Ishibashi, Y., Ikeda, K., Sakaguchi, K., Okino, N., Taguchi, R., and Ito, M. (2012) Quality control of fungus-specific glucosylceramide in Cryptococcus neoformans by endoglycoceramidase-related protein 1 (EGCrP1). J. Biol. Chem. 287, 368-381). We herein identified and characterized EGCrP2, a homologue of EGCrP1, as the enzyme responsible for sterylglucoside catabolism in C. neoformans. In contrast to EGCrP1, which is specific to GlcCer, EGCrP2 hydrolyzed various β-glucosides, including GlcCer, cholesteryl-β-glucoside, ergosteryl-β-glucoside, sitosteryl-β-glucoside, and para-nitrophenyl-β-glucoside, but not α-glucosides or β-galactosides, under acidic conditions. Disruption of the EGCrP2 gene (egcrp2) resulted in the accumulation of a glycolipid, the structure of which was determined following purification to ergosteryl-3β-glucoside, a major sterylglucoside in fungi, by mass spectrometric and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance analyses. This glycolipid accumulated in vacuoles and EGCrP2 was detected in vacuole-enriched fraction. These results indicated that EGCrP2 was involved in the catabolism of ergosteryl-β-glucoside in the vacuoles of C. neoformans. Distinct growth arrest, a dysfunction in cell budding, and an abnormal vacuole morphology were detected in the egcrp2-disrupted mutants, suggesting that EGCrP2 may be a promising target for anti-cryptococcal drugs.   6. Bingham fluid behavior of plagioclase-bearing basaltic magma: Approach from laboratory viscosity measurements

    Datasets of one atmosphere high temperature rotational viscometry of the Fuji 1707 basalt (Ishibashi, 2009) were analyzed based on the Bingham fluid model, and both yield stress and Bingham viscosity were determined. Reproducibility of the dataset by the Bingham fluid model was slightly better than that by the power law fluid modes adopted in our previous study although both the fluid models well represent the dataset in practical perspective. The relation between Bingham viscosity and crystallinity was compared with the Krieger-Dougherty equation, and both the maximum packing fraction of crystals and intrinsic viscosity for Bingham viscosity were determined ca. 0.45 and ca. 5.25, respectively, revealing that the maximum packing fraction decreased and intrinsic viscosity increased concomitantly with the increase in shape-anisotropy of crystals. However, the obtained value of the product of the maximum packing fraction and intrinsic viscosity (= ca. 2.36) was similar to that of uniform, isotropic-shaped particles (= 2.5), indicating that the effect of crystal shape-anisotropy on Bingham viscosity might be predicted only by change of the maximum packing fraction. Finite yield stress was detected for crystallinity larger than 0.133; it increased with crystallinity which suggests that critical crystallinity for onset of yield stress is at least lower than 0.133. The upper limit value of the critical crystallinity resembles the value calculated numerically for randomly oriented uniform particles by Saar et al. (2001) (0.10-0.15 for width/length ratio of 0.1-0.2, which is similar to the ratios in the basalt) whereas crystals in the basalt were moderately parallel arranged and their sizes vary significantly. That fact might be explained as follows; effects of parallel arrangement and size variation of crystals on the critical crystallinity are offset by the effect of variation in crystal shape-anisotropy, which suggests that shape-anisotropy distribution of crystals must

  7. Development of a time-resolved fluorometric method for observing hybridization in living cells using fluorescence resonance energy transfer.

    We previously showed that a specific kind of mRNA (c-fos) was detected in a living cell under a microscope by introducing two fluorescently labeled oligodeoxynucleotides, each labeled with donor or acceptor, into the cytoplasm, making them hybridize to adjacent locations on c-fos mRNA, and taking images of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) (A. Tsuji, H. Koshimoto, Y. Sato, M. Hirano. Y. Sei-Iida, S. Kondo, and K. Ishibashi, 2000, Biophys. J. 78:3260-3274). On the formed hybrid, the distance between donor and acceptor becomes close and FRET occurs. To observe small numbers of mRNA in living cells using this method, it is required that FRET fluorescence of hybrid must be distinguished from fluorescence of excess amounts of non-hybridizing probes and from cell autofluorescence. To meet these requirements, we developed a time-resolved method using acceptor fluorescence decays. When a combination of a donor having longer fluorescence lifetime and an acceptor having shorter lifetime is used, the measured fluorescence decays of acceptors under FRET becomes slower than the acceptor fluorescence decay with direct excitation. A combination of Bodipy493/503 and Cy5 was selected as donor and acceptor. When the formed hybrid had a configuration where the target RNA has no single-strand part between the two fluorophores, the acceptor fluorescence of hybrid had a sufficiently longer delay to detect fluorescence of hybrid in the presence of excess amounts of non-hybridizing probes. Spatial separation of 10-12 bases between two fluorophores on the hybrid is also required. The decay is also much slower than cell autofluorescence, and smaller numbers of hybrid were detected with less interference of cell autofluorescence in the cytoplasm of living cells under a time-resolved fluorescence microscope with a time-gated function equipped camera. The present method will be useful when observing induced expressions of mRNA in living cells. PMID:11423432

  8. Wing galaxies: A formation mechanism of the clumpy irregular galaxy Markarian 297

    In order to contribute to an understanding of collision-induced starburst activities, the authors present a detailed case study on the starburst galaxy Markarian 297 (= NGC 6052 = Arp 209; hereafter Mrk 297). This galaxy is classified as a clumpy irregular galaxy (CIG) according to its morphological properties (cf. Heidmann, 1987). Two major clumps and many small clumps are observed in the entire region of Mrk 297 (Hecquet, Coupinot, and Maucherat 1987). The overall morphology of Mrk 297 is highly chaotic and thus it seems difficult to determine possible orbits of galaxy-galaxy collision. However, the authors have serendipitously found a possible orbit during a course of numerical simulations for a radial-penetration collision between galaxies. The radial-penetration collision means that an intruder penetrates a target galaxy radially passing by its nucleus. This kind of collision is known to explain a formation mechanism of ripples around disk galaxies (Wallin and Struck-Marcell 1988). Here, the authors show that the radial-penetration collision between galaxies successfully explains both overall morphological and kinematical properties of Mrk 297. The authors made two kinds of numerical simulations for Mrk 297. One is N-body (1x10(exp 4) particles) simulations in which effects of self gravity of the stellar disk are taken into account. These simulations are used to study detailed morphological feature of Mrk 297. The response of gas clouds are also investigated in order to estimate star formation rates in such collisions. The other is test-particle simulations, which are utilized to obtain a rough picture of Mrk 297 and to analyze the velocity field of Mrk 297. The techniques of the numerical simulations are the same as those in Noguchi (1988) and Noguchi and Ishibashi (1986). In the present model, an intruding galaxy with the same mass of a target galaxy moves on a rectilinear orbit which passes the center of the target.

  9. Using CO2 and He Concentrations in Hydrothermal Fluids to Constrain Along-Axis Magma Chamber Dimensions at 9°N, EPR

    Magmatic degassing is a common occurrence in subaerial volcanoes and has been reported in shallow submarine volcanoes. It has been speculated that mid-ocean ridge magma chambers may exhibit degassing behavior but to date there has been no direct documentation of its occurrence. Based on very high CO2 and He concentrations, we believe that we now have evidence for a degassing magma chamber at 9°N, East Pacific Rise. M Vent, in the immediate vicinity of the 1991 eruption, exhibited high and relatively stable CO2 concentrations in excess of 150 mmol/kg for at least eight years post-eruption. Such high values are many times the value that can be extracted from basalt by hydrothermal fluid and have previously been seen only at Axial and Loihi Seamounts. Two vents about one km south (Bio 9 and P Vents) had CO2 concentrations around 50 mmol/kg in 1991 which increased to maxima near 200 mmol/kg in 1993. We believe this represents a southward movement of the magma body in this area. He concentrations were also elevated at all the vents but showed different temporal trends from CO2 and reached maximum values in 1994. 3He/heat ratios are significantly different between M and Bio 9 and P Vents implying that separate magma bodies with differing degrees of degassing underlie the two areas. We have seen similarly high concentrations of CO2 and He at 31.8°S on the East Pacific Rise (Lupton et al., 1999) and suggest that magmatic degassing into the hydrothermal convection cell is occurring there as well. This work indicates that the concentrations of magmatic gases in hydrothermal fluids may provide fine scale data bearing on the locations and along-axis dimensions of magma chambers.   11. Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE) for a future Doppler Wind Lidar satellite in Japan:

    A feasibility study of tropospheric wind measurements by a coherent Doppler lidar aboard a super-low-altitude satellite is being conducted in Japan. We consider a coherent lidar with a laser light source at 2.05 μm whose characteristics correspond to an existing ground-based instrument (power=3.75 W, PRF=30 Hz and pulse width=200 ns). An Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE) has been implemented based on the Sensitivity Observing System experiment (SOSE) developed at the Japanese Meteorological-Research-Institute using the Japan Meteorological Agency global Numerical Weather Prediction model. The measurement simulator uses wind, aerosol and cloud 3-d global fields from the OSSE speudo-truth and the aerosol model MASINGAR. In this presentation, we will first discuss the measurement performances. Considering measurement horizontal resolutions of 100 km along the orbit track, we found that below 3 km, the median horizontal wind error is between 0.8-1 m/s for a vertical resolution of 0.5 km, and that near 50% of the data are valid measurements. Decreasing the vertical resolution to 1 km allows us to maintain similar performances up to 8 km almost over most latitudes. Above, the performances significantly fall down but a relatively good percentage of valid measurements (20-40%) are still found near the tropics where cirrus clouds frequently occur. The potential of the instrument to improve weather prediction models will be discussed using the OSSE results obtained for both polar and low inclination orbit satellites.   14. Oxidation of shallow conduit magma: Insight from μ-XANES analysis on volcanic ash particle

    Redox state of magma is important to understand dynamics of volcanic eruptions because magma properties such as composition of degassed volatiles, stability field of minerals, and rheology of magma depend on redox state. To evaluate redox state of magma, Fe3+/ΣFe ratio [= Fe3+/( Fe3++ Fe2+)] of volcanic glass has been measured non-destructively by Fe-K edge μ-XANES (micro X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure) spectroscopy (e.g., Cottrell and Kelly, 2011). We performed textural, compositional, and Fe-K edge μ-XANES analyses on volcanic ash to infer oxidation process of magma at shallow conduit during eruption at Bromo Volcano, Indonesia. The volcanic ash particles were collected in 24th March 2011 by real-time sampling from ongoing activity. The activity was characterized by strombolian eruption showing magma head ascended to near the ground surface. The ash sample contains two type of volcanic glasses named as Brown and Black glasses (BrG and BlG), based on their color. Textual analysis shows microlite crystallinities are same in the two type of glasses, ranging from 0 to 3 vol.%. EPMA analyses show that all of the glasses have almost identical andesitic composition with SiO2 = 60 wt.%. In contrast, Fe-K edge μ-XANES spectra with the analytical method by Ishibashi et al. (in prep) demonstrate that BrG (Fe3+/ΣFe = 0.20-0.26) is more oxidized than BlG (Fe3+/ΣFe = 0.32-0.60). From combination of the glass composition, the measured Fe3+/ΣFe ratio and 1060 degree C of temperature (Kress and Carmichael, 1991), the oxygen fugacities are estimated to be NNO and NNO+4 for BrG and BlG, respectively. The volcanic glasses preserve syn-eruptive physicochemical conditions by rapid quenching due to their small size ranging from 125 to 250 μm. Our results demonstrate that BrG and BlG magmas are textually and chemically identical but their redox conditions are different at the eruption. In the presentation we show the results by simulation on the interaction of high energy neutrinos with Europa by JULIeT, which is the simulation software for neutrino propagation developed by Chiba University[5]. We assume homogeneous flux of high energy neutrino(10^19 eV) and calculate induced radiations. This year's conference was organized by Prof Stephen Goodnick, Arizona State University, and Prof Yoshinobu Aoyagi, Tokyo Institute of Technology. The conference benefited from 14 invited speakers, whose topics spanned the above list, and a total of 97 registered attendees. The largest contingent was from Japan, followed closely by the US. In total, there were 49 from Japan, 31 fiom the US, and 17 from Europe.
