  1. A comparison of hexachlorophene and Lactacyd on growth of skin flora in healthy term newborn infants

    Reports of toxicity from the routine bathing of newborn infants with hexachlorophene resulted in discontinuing its use in the newborn nurseries of the Ottawa Civic Hospital, only to be followed by an outbreak of skin infections. As a result, a controlled trial of bathing newborn babies with either Lactacyd or pHisoHex was begun. The efficacy of the soaps was evaluated by comparing the colonization of the nose and umbilical cords of 158 pHisoHex-washed babies and 156 Lactacyd-washed babies on the day of discharge from hospital. The gram-negative and gram-positive bacterial flora of nose and cord of infants washed with pHisoHex and Lactacyd were identical in frequency and distribution. PMID:4834430

  2. Catecholamine transport in isolated lung parenchyma of pig

    1 Lung parenchyma strips of the pig incubated at 37°C with [3H]-(-)-noradrenaline ([3H]-NA) or [3H]-(±)-isoprenaline ([3H]-Iso), accumulated radioactivity via saturable, high affinity uptake processes. Apparent saturation constants (Km) for [3H]-NA and [3H]-Iso were 1.34 × 10-6 M and 1.63 × 10-6 M respectively, while apparent transport maxima (Vmax) were 4.86 and 1.63 × 10-9 mol min-1 g-1 respectively. 2 Cellular accumulation of radioactivity from radiolabelled catecholamines was greatly reduced by lowering the temperature to 7°C, pretreatment with ouabain (100 μM), phentolamine (15 μM) or phenoxybenzamine (80 μM). However, accumulation of radioactivity derived from (3H]-NA was inhibited selectively by cocaine (10 μM) and desipramine (1 μM), while normetanephrine (80 μM) and 3-O-methylisoprenaline (50 μM) caused much greater reductions in cellular radioactivity from [3H]-Iso than from (3H]-NA. Taken together with information from kinetic studies, the results indicate that these amines are transported by separate uptake processes. 3 Cocaine (50 μM) which selectively reduced [3H]-NA transport, had no significant effect on the sensitivity (EC50) of isolated parenchyma lung strips of the pig to the contractile effects of cumulative concentrations of NA. The catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT) inhibitor, U-0521 (60 μM), also failed to alter the potency of NA, while normetanephrine (80 μM) caused a 2 fold decrease in potency. 4 Phentolamine (15 μM), which reduced the cellular accumulation of radioactivity derived from [3H]-Iso by 64%, caused a small potentiation of Iso-induced relaxations of porcine lung strips. Normetanephrine (80 μM) and 3-O-methylisoprenaline (50 μM), which also depressed the accumulation of cellular radioactivity from [3H]-Iso by > 50%, caused rightward shifts in Iso concentration-effect curves as a result of β-adrenoceptor blockade.     To determine intrasession and intersession reliability of strength measurements and hamstrings to quadriceps strength imbalance ratios (H/Q ratios) using the new isoforce dynamometer. Repeated measures. Exercise science laboratory. Thirty healthy subjects (15 females, 15 males, 27.8 years). Coefficient of variation (CV) and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated for (1) strength parameters, that is peak torque, mean work, and mean power for concentric and eccentric maximal voluntary contractions; isometric maximal voluntary torque (IMVT); rate of torque development (RTD), and (2) H/Q ratios, that is conventional concentric, eccentric, and isometric H/Q ratios (Hcon/Qcon at 60 deg/s, 120 deg/s, and 180 deg/s, Hecc/Qecc at -60 deg/s and Hiso/Qiso) and functional eccentric antagonist to concentric agonist H/Q ratios (Hecc/Qcon and Hcon/Qecc). High reliability: CV <10%, ICC >0.90; moderate reliability: CV between 10% and 20%, ICC between 0.80 and 0.90; low reliability: CV >20%, ICC <0.80. (1) Strength parameters: (a) high intrasession reliability for concentric, eccentric, and isometric measurements, (b) moderate-to-high intersession reliability for concentric and eccentric measurements and IMVT, and (c) moderate-to-high intrasession reliability but low intersession reliability for RTD. (2) H/Q ratios: (a) moderate-to-high intrasession reliability for conventional ratios, (b) high intrasession reliability for functional ratios, (c) higher intersession reliability for Hcon/Qcon and Hiso/Qiso (moderate to high) than Hecc/Qecc (low to moderate), and (d) higher intersession reliability for conventional H/Q ratios (low to high) than functional H/Q ratios (low to moderate). The results have confirmed the reliability of strength parameters and the most frequently used H/Q ratios.

    A method for determining the hydrogen index of the surfaces isoelectric state (pHiso) at various gases pressures -possible components of the surrounding and technological media has been developed. With its use, changes in pH of binary and more complex semiconductors-components of the new system-ZnSe-CdS under the influence of nitrogen dioxide-have been found. The limiting sensitivity of surfaces - minimum PNO2, causing a change in pH has been estimated. The most active components of ZnSe-CdS system, recommended as materials for measuring cells of NO2, have been revealed. The relationship between the changing patterns with the composition of surface (acid-base) and bulk (in particular, theoretical calculated crystal density) properties has been established, allowing to find the most effective materials for sensor technology and for semiconductor analysis.

    The acid-base properties of solid solutions and binary components of the InSb-CdTe system were studied by IR spectroscopy, pH isoelectric point measurements, and conductometric titration; adsorption properties with respect to CO, O2, NO2, NH3, CO + O2, and NO2 + NH3, by piezoquartz microweighing; and catalytic properties in the oxidation of carbon(II) oxide and reduction of nitrogen(IV) oxide with ammonia, by the pulsed and circulation flow methods. The nature, strength, and concentration of acid centers were determined. Changes in the concentration of acid centers under the action of gases (NO2 and NH3), gamma irradiation, and composition variations were estimated. The experimental dependences, thermodynamic and kinetic adsorption characteristics, the electrophysical, acid-base, and other physicochemical characteristics of the adsorbents, and adsorption characteristic-composition phase diagrams were analyzed taking into account the electronic nature of adsorbate molecules to determine the mechanism and characteristics of adsorption processes depending on the conditions of adsorption and the composition of the system. The results of adsorption studies were used to preliminarily determine the temperature regions of the occurrence and the mechanism of the reactions studied. A shock mechanism was suggested. Separate components (predominantly, solid solutions) of the InSb-CdTe system showed high catalytic activity at comparatively low temperatures. Along with behavior common to the system and its binary compounds (InSb and CdTe), solid solutions exhibited features characteristic of multi-component systems. These were the presence of extrema in the pHiso-composition, adsorption characteristic-composition, and catalytic activity-composition diagrams.   7. Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study on Decolonization Procedures for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) among HIV-Infected Adults

    Background HIV-infected persons have increased risk of MRSA colonization and skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTI). However, no large clinical trial has examined the utility of decolonization procedures in reducing MRSA colonization or infection among community-dwelling HIV-infected persons. Methods 550 HIV-infected adults at four geographically diverse US military HIV clinics were prospectively screened for MRSA colonization at five body locations every 6 months during a 2-year period. Those colonized were randomized in a double-blind fashion to nasal mupirocin (Bactroban) twice daily and hexachlorophene (pHisoHex) soaps daily for 7 days compared to placeboes similar in appearance but without specific antibacterial activity. The primary endpoint was MRSA colonization at 6-months post-randomization; secondary endpoints were time to MRSA clearance, subsequent MRSA infections/SSTI, and predictors for MRSA clearance at the 6-month time point. Results Forty-nine (9%) HIV-infected persons were MRSA colonized and randomized. Among those with 6-month colonization data (80% of those randomized), 67% were negative for MRSA colonization in both groups (p = 1.0). Analyses accounting for missing 6-month data showed no significant differences could have been achieved. In the multivariate adjusted models, randomization group was not associated with 6-month MRSA clearance. The median time to MRSA clearance was similar in the treatment vs. placebo groups (1.4 vs. 1.8 months, p = 0.35). There was no difference on subsequent development of MRSA infections/SSTI (p = 0.89). In a multivariable model, treatment group, demographics, and HIV-specific factors were not predictive of MRSA clearance at the 6-month time point. Conclusion A one-week decolonization procedure had no effect on MRSA colonization at the 6-month time point or subsequent infection rates among community-dwelling HIV-infected persons. More aggressive or novel interventions may be needed to reduce the burden of MRSA in
