  2. Grading patterns of river flood deposits in a subaqueous delta environment varies with distance from the mouth: example from Lake Shinji, Japan, as a natural laboratory

    Hyperpycnal flows have been recognized as an important sediment delivery process in marine environment. In order to clarify whether the momentum of river flows during floods propagates uniformly to offshore or not, we acquired three geo-slicer cores along a longitudinal profile on the subaqueous portion of the Hii River delta built since the 1630s in Lake Shinji, western Japan. Because the hydrologic energy of the lake is significantly low, deposits derived from the Hii River floods were well preserved on its delta front slope region capped by mud. Grading patterns of 26 individual sand beds in the cores vary with water depth. Triple stacks of inverse-to-normal grading is seen in beds of shallower horizons than 5 m below the water surface. Single inverse-to-normal grading mainly appears between 4 and 5 m depth, and normal grading dominates between 5 and 6 m depth. Assuming that flood hydrographs for the Hii River have not changed since the 17th century, this variation suggests the non-uniform propagation of the momentum of the river flow to its outflow. Inverse and normal grading is interpreted to reflect the waxing and waning of the parent flow, respectively. Thus, the hydrograph of the flood outflow is suggested to become simple with distance from the mouth. Triple stacks of inverse-to-normal grading in shallower horizons can be interpreted as consequences of movement of the plunge point of flood plumes during the course of flood events. Spatially decelerating sediment-laden river plumes steeply increase their velocity after they plunge beneath the water surface (Lamb et al., 2010). In depth-limited proximal areas of a subaqueous delta, back-and-forth translation of the plunge point over a fixed point due to the waxing and waning of river discharge leads to three cycles of waxing and waning of flow velocity.     A new and simple method for the determination of hydroxylamine in environmental water, such as fresh rivers and lakes using hypochlorite, followed by its gas choromatographic detection, has been developed. A glass vial filled with sample water was sealed by a butyl-rubber stopper and aluminum cap without head-space, and then sodium hypochlorite solution was injected into the vial through a syringe to convert hydroxylamine to nitrous oxide. The head-space in the glass vial was prepared with 99.9% grade N2 using a gas-tight syringe. After the glass vial was shaken for a few minutes, nitrous oxide in the gas-phase was measured by a gas chromatograph with an electron-capture detector. The dissolved nitrous oxide in the liquid-phase was calculated according to the solubility formula. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of fresh-water samples taken from Iu river and Hii river, flowing into brackish Lakes Nakaumi and Shinji, respectively.

    Aphids and related insects feed from a single cell type in plants: the phloem sieve element. Genetic resistance to Acyrthosiphon kondoi Shinji (bluegreen aphid or blue alfalfa aphid) has been identified in Medicago truncatula Gaert. (barrel medic) and backcrossed into susceptible cultivars. The status of M. truncatula as a model legume allows an in-depth study of defense against this aphid at physiological, biochemical, and molecular levels. In this study, two closely related resistant and susceptible genotypes were used to characterize the aphid-resistance phenotype. Resistance conditions antixenosis since migratory aphids were deterred from settling on resistant plants within 6 h of release, preferring to settle on susceptible plants. Analysis of feeding behavior revealed the trait affects A. kondoi at the level of the phloem sieve element. Aphid reproduction on excised shoots demonstrated that resistance requires an intact plant. Antibiosis against A. kondoi is enhanced by prior infestation, indicating induction of this phloem-specific defense. Resistance segregates as a single dominant gene, AKR (Acyrthosiphon kondoi resistance), in two mapping populations, which have been used to map the locus to a region flanked by resistance gene analogs predicted to encode the CC-NBS-LRR subfamily of resistance proteins. This work provides the basis for future molecular analysis of defense against phloem parasitism in a plant model system. PMID:15778464

  8. Back-arc basin opening and closure along the southern margin of the Sea of Japan

    (PHS) moved northward towards the Nankai trough on the southeastern side of the SW-Japan arc. Due to the high thermal regime of the Shikoku basin, the resistance along the Nankai trough was so large that shortening deformation occurred along in the failed marginal rift zone that was developed previously along the southern margin of the Sea of Japan. This resulted in the Shinji fold belt. After the start of the subduction of the Shikoku basin along the Nankai trough, the rate of shortening in the Shinji fold belt was decreased and the folded strata were covered by sub-horizontal Pliocene sediments. Reverse faulting of the arc-parallel faults from Pliocene to early Pleistocene along the small number of faults suggests that the compression from the Nankai trough still has been continued in this stage. A change in the direction of the motion of PHS at 1 Ma produced major change in stress regime from NS compression to EW compression in the back-arc. Following the change of stress regime, the former reverse faults reactivated as strike-slip faults. The structural evolution and inherited structure presented here provide essential information for constructing the tsunami source-fault model along southern margin of the Sea of Japan.

    Biotic stress in plants frequently induces a hypersensitive response (HR). This distinctive reaction has been studied intensively in several pathosystems and has shed light on the biology of defence signalling. Compared with microbial pathogens, relatively little is known about the role of the HR in defence against insects. Reference genotype A17 of Medicago truncatula Gaertn., a model legume, responds to aphids of the genus Acyrthosiphon with necrotic lesions resembling a HR. In this study, the biochemical nature of this response, its mode of inheritance, and its relationship with defence against aphids were investigated. The necrotic lesion phenotype and resistance to the bluegreen aphid (BGA, Acyrthosiphon kondoi Shinji) and the pea aphid (PA, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris)) were analysed using reference genotypes A17 and A20, their F2 progeny and recombinant inbred lines. BGA-induced necrotic lesions co-localized with the production of H2O2, consistent with an oxidative burst widely associated with hypersensitivity. This HR correlated with stronger resistance to BGA in A17 than in A20; these phenotypes cosegregated as a semi-dominant gene, AIN (Acyrthosiphon-induced necrosis). In contrast to BGA, stronger resistance to PA in A17, compared with A20, did not cosegregate with a PA-induced HR. The AIN locus resides in a cluster of sequences predicted to encode the CC-NBS-LRR subfamily of resistance proteins. AIN-mediated resistance presents a novel opportunity to use a model plant and model aphid to study the role of the HR in defence responses to phloem-feeding insects. PMID:19690018

    The symposium was held with the Japanese Society of Laboratory Medicine and JACLaP to discuss the way to develop a beneficial relationship between hospitals and laboratory testing companies with co-chairing by Seiji Kawano, Kobe University and Toshisuke Morita, Toho University. Clinical testing is considered to be essential for medical diagnosis and treatment; however, it is difficult for a hospital to perform all clinical testing for various reasons, including cost-effectiveness. In this session, 4 guest speakers gave a talk from their viewpoints. Doctor Kawano talked about the results of a questionnaire filled out by 114 university hospitals on how to develop a beneficial relationship between hospitalsoand laboratory testing companies. Next, Mr. Shinji Ogawa, president and CEO of SRL, talked about favorable ways to utilize laboratory testing companies, sayingthat such companies, which have a variety of skills, are expected to offer new and advanced technologies to hospitals continuously, and abundant data which laboratory testing companies have should be used for the advancement of community medicine. Professor Koshiba, Hyogo Medical School, expressed his apprehension to develop a so-called branch lab. in university hospitals from his own experience, and concluded that a beneficial relationship with companies to perform tasks required by hospitals should be sought. The last speaker, Yuichi Setoyama, Mitsubishi Chemical Medience, talked about the new relationship between hospitals and laboratory testing companies, and emphasized that hospitals and such companies should know the strong and weak points of each other and build a mutually complementary system. After all presentations were over, a discussion with participants was held. Doctors of clinics said that the role of laboratory testing companies for large hospitals is different from that for small clinics, and such companies are indispensable for his everyday medical activities. All cognitive restructuring strategies were found to significantly decrease the distress level, with "What would be your advice to a friend who has a similar problem?" found more helpful than some other strategies. The CBT program offered via smartphone and connected to the remote server is not only effective in alleviating depression but also opens a new avenue in gathering information of what and how each participant may utilize the program. The activities and strategies found useful in this analysis will provide valuable information in brush-ups of the program itself and of mobile health (mHealth) in general.
